Boat Sunk In Bolters Chute   ----- Captain Darryll Weil sent us some info and pictures on the boat that is sunk in Bolters Chute.  The pictures were taken by Maureen.   Darryll writes:

A few days before Memorial Day Weekend 2005 a 32' Cruiser apparently hit the wing dam on the Illinois side of Bolters Chute.  The story I heard was that the boat made it about 200 yards upstream and to the bank where they tied a line to a tree before it sank completely.  When Crusher and I went by there the Thursday before Memorial Day all we saw was a black fender with a line tied to it marking the sunken boat.  Well, this weekend apparently work is progressing on raising the boat with air bags.   Having come close to a similar fate I feel real bad for the Captain of this boat.  Last year boating season almost started this way for me.  For more pics go to http://www.captainweil.com/boat_sunk_bolters/boatsunk1.html........Thanks Darryll

Our River Picture of the Day ------    is actually a "Historical Graph" of the   Water Temperature of Alton Pool from Jan 2004 until May 2005.    We had some questions on the Message Board a week or so ago about the river water temperature.  The person wrote "Wondering what the average temperature of the river was last summer"  and "When will it get warmer ?"

I wrote an evasive answer to the reply because I didn't have any data on actual river water temperatures.   Well, the head of RiverBill's Research Department seen the reply and got his anchor rope all in a knot.    He insisted that we could do better and off he went on another research project. Oh Buoy!  He contacted the Corps of Engineers and requested some historical water temperature data.  You know what ~ he go it!  All the way back to 2004 for both Winfield and Alton Dams.

He plotted the data and began studying it when he noticed that there was a difference in water temperature at the two dams.  4 degrees on average.  So we can say that the water warms about one degree for every 10 miles it flows in Alton Pool !  ( Now why is that ? )

So when will the water get warmer ?  It is getting warmer each week until a peak temperature is reached sometime in mid - July.  It should get to be about 80 degrees if this year is anything like 2004..

What was the average temperature last summer ?   The average at Winfield was 77.2 degrees and at Alton it was 80.4 degrees for the months of June, July and August.

Note:  RiverBill's reading on the chart at the top of the web page is taken at Winfield Dam, so please add about 1 degree for each 10 miles you are down stream.

Please send all inquiries to:

Information on the Great Rivers Habitat Alliance  ------   Boaters in the Alton Lake area should be aware that there are serious issues facing the area they so love.  More and more land in the confluence flood plain of northern St. Charles County is getting gobbled up for development….a move which  makes access to the river more difficult in times of high water.

Great Rivers Habitat Alliance (GRHA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the 100-year Confluence Flood Plain in St. Charles County. It was founded in 2000 by a group of flood plain land owners concerned about the fast spreading development that threatens to destroy our area’s most valuable natural resource; the Confluence Flood Plain and wetlands.  Local board members include Jim Leonhard, Judy Bateman and Sue Schneider who are all committed to preserving this area.

Most of us remember the flood of 1993 which cost American taxpayers $14 billion. No state was more impacted than Missouri. Unfortunately, floodplain development in the years since has been rampant and unchecked. In fact, according to Dr. Nicholas Pinter of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, no other region in the entire world is developing flood plains at the rate of St. Louis and St. Charles County, Missouri.

Great Rivers Habitat Alliance is working to educate land owners, farmers, government officials and others who love the river about the importance of preserving this land for the sake of the environment and the wildlife habitat it provides.

Let the land in northern St. Charles County be what it always has been….rich farmland and home for the wildlife so that everyone can enjoy it as is.

For more information about our organization, visit us at www.grha.net or call (314) 241-2122.

Drag Boat Races ------   I received the following e-mail from Captain Darryll Weil about some of our fellow boaters doing some drag racing at Lake Wappapelo.    Darryll wrote:

We went to the St. Louis Drag Boat Association races on Lake Wappapelo near Poplar Bluff to cook and help Big Dick's Halfway Inn Motorsports and Little John's Marine Service.  They had two boats to enter, a Pro Mod called "Dick Tator" and a Top Eliminator called "What A Ride".  Brutus driving "Dick Tator" made it to the final round and ran a better time than his opponent only to lose by red lighting at the line.  Mike in "What A Ride" had a valve seat come loose and drop in the motor during his first round, which he won because of his faster reaction time at the line.  After tearing down the motor we could not repair it to make the next round.  Weather threatened Sunday morning with rain but cleared up nicely by race time.  Maureen and I took a bunch of food to cook for the crew and she and Teri manned Big Dick's T-Shirt stand.
