~~~A WEBSITE FOR THE ALTON POOL BOATING COMMUNITY ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER~~~
12-31-04
As the sun sets on 2004 we should count our "River Blessings" and look forward to a new beginning in 2005. This year has been real good for me. The weather and the river in the Spring allowed us to get an early start on the boating year. The flooding came but did not cause a lot of problems and we had a lot of good weekend weather during the summer. We boated real late into the fall of the year thanks to friends with cruisers. Most important I had no boat problems and I made a lot of new "River Friends" this year. I take my captain's hat off and raise it high to the year 2004. May next year be even better.
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of the Grafton Ferry heading across the Illinois River towards the cut-through on the lower end of the island in the background. Then it crossed the Mississippi River to the ferry landing in Missouri. The sun was just about ready to disappear for the day when this picture was taken creating an orange glow in the sky that sort of outlines the trees on the island.
12-29-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of the Brussels Ferry heading across the Illinois River towards the ferry landing in Calhoun County. The sun was staring to get low in sky the day this picture was taken creating a lot of reflection off the water and the wheelhouse of the ferry.
12-28-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of the Golden Eagle Ferry that was taken on a bright cold day a couple of weeks ago. The ferry is heading towards the Missouri side of the Mississippi River to unload some vehicles coming from Illinois.
12-27-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ was sent in by Brad and is of some of the bluffs along the Illinois side of the Mississippi River. I happened to see Brad the other night and he told me this pic was taken in late October on one of his October river outings. Thanks for the great pic Brad.
Oooh Oooh Oooh Lookin Out My Back Door ------ A few weeks ago Mike D was talking to us on the phone. He stops in the middle of a sentence and says "OH MY GOD ~~~~ I got to go !"    Later he called back and told us what happened. A towboat pulled right up in front of his house. He said it was very close to the house and parallel to his seawall. After that it backed out into the river channel turning until it was 90 degrees to the riverbank. Then it pulled up on the rock bank right outside of Mike's backdoor. Wow - What a picture !    It was between Mikes house and the pavilion at the entrance to the harbor at Two Branch Marina. A couple of guys got out and loaded boxes from a waiting pickup truck on to the towboat. Then the towboat backed out away from the bank and headed back up-river. All in a day of living next to the River.     Thanks Mike for the story and the "one of a kind" pictures.
Bitts & Bytes ------ Thought you might be interested in a free weekly e-mail newsletter named "Bitts & Bytes". It contains a lot of interesting information about the inland waterways of our great country and it is written by a guy named Jack Simpsom that is right here in St. Louis. It contains a lot of info about commercial navigation but as a pleasure boater I think it is very interesting. Take a look.
RiverBill's Archive ------ I have added an "Archive" in the upper left hand side of this webpage for storing older information. The info in this page goes back to Dec. 1. Look in the "Archive for the older stuff.
Heading South ------ This is a picture of southbound tow getting ready to lock through Winfield Dam on Thursday the 23rd of December. It has got to be cold and dangerous out there. Hurry home for Christmas guys! This picture is from the Winfield-Live Cam.
12-24-04
Merry Christmas to all my River Friends.
River is Froze ------ I got a "River Report" from Mike D again this morning. The the River is froze solid all the way across in front of Two Branch Island and is no longer moving. Thanks for the update Mike.
12-23-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of the Loading Dock in Grafton, IL. located at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers with the bluffs along the Great River Road in the background. This picture was taken earlier this week near the end of the day and you can see the reflection of the glowing winter sunset in the windows of the building. Looks like they are closed for the winter.
River is Icing-up ------ I got a "River Report" from Mike D that there are sheets of ice floating down the river this morning. He said the last tow that came through sounded like a freight train as it broke up the ice. Thanks for the info and pictures Mike.
SandBar Restaurant AD ------ Take a look at the revised "SandBar Restaurant" AD. Pick their hot-link in the upper right hand side of this webpage .
12-22-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is a great October River Sunset sent in by Brad. The next picture was taken a bit later as the sun dips below the tree line and the sky seems to come alive with hues of yellow and red . Thanks for the great pics Brad.
RiverBill's welcomes the SandBar Restaurant at Lake Center as a sponsor ! ------     Scott Wolf and Robbin Quinlisk will take over the operation of the bar and restaurant next year with the "Grand Opening" scheduled for April. The SandBar is located on Dardeene Slough at UMR 224.4. So, when motoring in that area next summer make sure you "stop-in" at the new hot spot on the river.     Stay tuned to RiverBill's for more pictures and regular updates as things take shape for opening day. Click on their AD in the upper right hand corner of this webpage for their logo and phone number.
12-21-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of River Santa riding outside the wheelhouse on the Brussels Ferry yesterday afternoon as they ferried cars and trucks across the Illinois River. It tis the season to see Santa everywhere.
12-20-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is lookng down-river through the Gazebo on the deck at Mike D's house at UMR 231.5 Thanks for the picture Mike.
12-19-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is a bright and sunny pic looking up river yesterday from the deck of Mike D's house. The upper end of Two Branch Island is on the right and you can see the cliffs in the distance where the Poppleton Navigation Light is located at UMR 233.5 . Thanks for the picture Mike !
Alton Pool Boating Community ------ I changed the website description again yesterday after Mark Sweetnam e-mailed me a few suggestions for improving what I had. I decided that his descriptions were much better than what I had so I used one of his.     Thanks Mark!     ( By the way Mark is in the band 2nd Nature that is going to start playing at the SandBar Restaurant at Lake Center this summer.)
12-18-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ of the Piasa Bird was taken by Tony Trice. The Piasa Bird is painted on a cliff along the Great River Road between Alton and Grafton, IL.     For an up-close view, pick on the link to greatriverroad.com website. Anyone have a picture of the Piasa Bird when it was painted on a different cliff down the road from this one and it was much larger ?     Thanks for the picture Tony.
The Towboat America ------ I received a report this morning that the towboat "America" is moored at Kampsville, on the Illinois River.
Melvin Price Lock Closure ------ According to an ITCS memo dated 12/16/04 the Melvin Price main lock chamber will be closed on the 21st of December for repairs. To view the ITCS memo pick this link .
Can't you see ? ------ Brian Schaffer sent me a link to a very interesting picture that he found on the web of a retractable wheelhouse towboat from the Alter Bargeline website pushing the President Casino on the River. Seems to me that they need to raise the wheelhouse a bit higher so they could see over the top of the President and that is probably not possible. I am sure they had a safe method worked out so they could see where they where going. This towboat sure looks like the same one that I had on RiverBill's on 12-12-04.     Thanks Brian !
Alton Pool Boating Community ------ I made a change to the webpage header. I think "Boating Community" is more descriptive of who we are. Most of us live in our own communities all around the St. Louis and Illinois area and some of us even live in boats on the River, but as boaters we are our own community. We are neighbors at the boat dock, neighbors at the sandbar, neighbors at the clubhouses, we attend social gatherings together and on and on. I get e-mail from all kinds of boaters, some with johnboats, big and small pleasure craft, some sail boaters and even people related to the towboat industry. When on Alton Pool we are a Community !
12-17-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is some of the River Crowd at Stevies Rays on Main Street in St. Charles last night. While we were there I got to chat with Jim of "Whats up on the river.com" for a while about all kinds of stuff. I think a good time was had by all. Thanks Annie for setting this all up. Look for the next get together in January of 2005.
12-16-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of boat heading home for the winter on a cold dreary day last week. The road and the house shown here are at the end of highway "C" on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River at about UMR 231.5.
12-15-04
Our River Picture of the Day ----- is of a towboat pushing a barge full of mulch. I took this picture back around the end of October because of the contents of the barge caught my eye. The picture got lost in my archives and I never thought much more about it. I was reading Kathy Flippo's latest edition of Tow Talkin today where she wrote about seeing pine bark being shipped by barge for use as mulch so I thought I would dig this picture out and post it as the pic of the day.
12-14-04
Our River Picture of the Day ----- is of a 2 story house with a red barn on the Illinois bank of the Mississippi River near UMR 234.
12-13-04
Our River Picture of the Day ----- is of the cliffs and Popleton navigational light at UMR 233.5 on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River on a cold dreary day last week. Since the leaves are off the trees this cliff and the reddish colored layer of rock at the top is more noticeable this time of the year.
Holiday lights ----- I got an e-mail from Dan Owens of the Boat Photo Museum yesterday with a link to a picture the towboat "City Of Louisville" all decked out in holiday lights. Thanks Dan !
12-12-04
Our River Picture of the Weekend (Sunday) ----- is a "set of two" of a southbound tow being pushed by a Retractable Wheelhouse Towboat. The first one is from the Winfield Live-Cam of the Tow locking through the Dam at 8:15 yesterday morning and the 2nd picture is of the same tow heading down-river past Mike D's place at UMR 231.5. Thanks for the picture Mike ! I also found a picture of retractable wheelhouse towboat (that is for sale) with the wheelhouse retracted all the way down. Really looks different !   Take a look.
12-11-04
Our River Picture of the Weekend (Saturday) ----- is of a great looking house on Cuivre Slough around UMR 234. This pic was taken last Wednesday on one of our last boat rides on the River for this year.
12-10-04
Our River Picture of the Weekend -----(Yes the weekend starts on Friday) is actually a "Set of Four Sunrise Pictures" taken about 5 minutes apart earlier this week by Mike D from his house on the banks of the Mississippi River.   Again, I think these pics might be suitable for framing.   So scroll down and take a look at how a "River Sunrise" looks this time of the year.   At first you can see the first few rays of light peeking through the clouds as a dim glow.   Then, little by little, the entire sky and River turn into this yellow and orange light show. Thanks for the great pictures Mike !
If anyone wants a copy of these pics, drop me an e-mail and I will send you a high quality file that you can get an 8 X 10 (or larger) print at your favorite photo processor.
Our River Picture of the Day is of towboat pushing a couple of barges up river around UMR 231.5. This pic was taken last night around sunset. Looks cold and dreary, but pictures can be deceiving. It was nice and warm inside looking out . This is a common site from a house with a great "River View". Thanks Mike D for letting us warm up after the boat ride last night.
12-08-04
Our River Picture of the Day is of ----- Winfield Dam with all of the gates open because of the high water. This pic was taken by Tony Trice in June of this year. Thanks Tony.
The towboat "America" ----- I got an e-mail from Dan Owens of the Boat Photo Museum about the towboat "America". Dan found out that Alter sold the towboat on Nov. 1st to a private individual from Whitehall, Ill. Dan said he is going to try to contact the individual to see what he intends to do with it. Maybe a restaurant or a bar ?
Sand Bar Restaurant at Lake Center ----- I got an e-mail from Scott Wolf yesterday. He wrote "The Sand Bar at Lake Center Marina, is going to be operated in the 2005 boating season by Robbin Quinlisk, who has tended bar there for several seasons,   and Scott Wolf who boats out of lake center." Scott also wrote that they booked the band 2nd Nature for Memorial Day and have some tentative plans to book them on the last Saturday of every month until the end of the season. Good luck with your new venture Scott. I know that I will be stopping in.
12-07-04
Our River Picture of the Day ----- is another from the lock at Winfield Dam. The southbound tow entering the lock is almost hidden from view because of the brightness of the spotlight. That is a harbor tug on the port side supplying some help to get it into the lock. This pic was taken Monday morning about 8:00 AM by the Winfield live-cam.
Rivers Research Center ----- There was an article in last Saturday's Alton Telegraph about U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello getting federal money for the Lewis and Clark Community College's National Great rivers Research Center that may be of interest you. Research done through the Center includes big river ecology, watersheds and river communities. For more information go to The Telegraph on-line newspaper.
Golden Eagle River Museum Shuts Down ----- The Museum located in South St. Louis County shut down in October according to the "Bitts & Bytes" newsletter written by Jack R. Simpson. For a link to the newsletter and more information click here.
Our River Picture of the Day ----- is of the Party Pavilion at South Shore Harbor on Dardeene Slough at about UMR 226.5.
Con Trios Yacht Club ----- Laura and got to attend the Con Trios Yacht Club Christmas Party Saturday night as guests. Thank you Carl and Mary, Gary and Judy for the invitation and the good time !     I seen a lot of familiar faces from the River and it was good to chat with everyone. Great food, good friends, an outstanding band and a good time by all.
What is Con Trios Yacht Club ?   Their "Purpose" as stated on their website is as follows: "To promote safe boating and fellowship between boaters".       I think that pretty much sums it up.
I added a link to their website on the toolbar on the left hand side of this webpage. Take a look!
12-05-04
Our River Picture of the Weekend ----- is of a tow leaving the lock at Winfield Dam heading up-river yesterday (Saturday) at 2:05 PM. This picture is from the Winfield live-cam, "Real-time Images from Lock and Dam 25".
Tows ----- We share the River with all kinds of boats. Johnboats, sail boats, large and small pleasure boats and then these big guys, the Tows. Kathy Flippo of Tow Talkin sent me a river update that I think is very interesting .
Kathy Flippo says ----- "This in from my spy in Minneapolis/St. Paul...........
Mississippi shipping ends.
The 2004 shipping season on the Mississippi ended Monday as the last towboat headed down the river, pushing four barges of petroleum products. The shipment of most commodities remained about the same as last year, but grain shipments dropped by nearly half, according to Dick Lambert, director of the Minnesota Department of Transportation's Ports and Waterways Section. Many shippers to Asian markets used rail transportation to Pacific Northwest seaports rather than barge shipments to the Port of New Orleans, Lambert said.
Meanwhile, the St. Paul District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin repairs on two Minnesota locks and dams. Lock and Dam 2 in Hastings and Lock and Dam 5 in Minnesota City need repairs on their 70-year-old bulkheads that cannot be completed while they are in use.
The repairs cost about $2 million for each site and will be completed in time for the river to reopen in March. The corps fixed the bulkhead at Lock and Dam 3 in Red Wing last year and plans to repair two bulkheads each year until it finishes repairs on all 13 locks and dams in the St. Paul district, Shannon Bauer, a corps official, said."
Our River Picture of the Weekend ----- was sent in by Greg Moore. It is a picture of the Clark Bridge that goes from Alton, IL. to Missouri. Greg has captured a strange red glow in the sky that extends all the way down onto the rock dike . Thanks Greg !
12-03-04
Our River Picture of the Day ----- was taken by Tony Trice in June of this year. It is the very, very colorful -- Alton Belle Riverboat moored at the casino in Alton, IL.     A very modern looking vessel   with "old time" Riverboat smoke stacks   painted up in such bright colors !
Anyone got a picture of this Riverboat when it was white, or a picture of the one before this that actually looked like an old-time Riverboat ?
10:30 AM update --- Got an e-mail from Carl this morning. He said the smoke stacks are on the boat behind the Alton Bell. Yes !   He is absolutely right !   I fixed it up - I struck through the text above that was incorrect. Thanks Carl !
12-02-04
Our River Picture of the Day ----- is of another type of vessel we share the River with-- Sail Boats. These are some smaller sized ones sailing out in front of the bluffs on an overcast day last summer.
12-01-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is another of the rusty towboat America as it sat moored on the Illinois side of the Mississippi just below Winfield Dam in the Fall of 2003. The next pic a ghostly looking up-close shot of the vessel. Notice that someone left a window open. Of course we have a rear view. These pictures were taken by Tony Trice. Thanks Tony !
11-30-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of the Bluffs on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River just down from Winfield Lock and Dam. The towboat America can be seen near the left side of the pic in its old mooring spot by the ferry landing. This pic was taken in mid-September of this year.
11-29-04
11-28-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine on the Mississippi RIver at Portage Des Sioux, Mo on a cold November evening.
All Weather Boating ------ Four groups of " All Weather Boaters" did the River Bar Crawl on Saturday. From Two Branch Marina to North Shore Restaurant and then on to the clubhouse at Palisades for lunch. I got some of the group to pose for a group picture at North shore before leaving and going downriver to Palisades where Don and Dave took care of us. It was a long trip home in the dark, but I think a good time was had by all.
11-27-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is another great picture sent in by Mike D. It is of the Fantastic Sunrise yesterday morning as seen from Mike D's house on the Mississippi River around UMR 231.5. The second picture he sent in was taken a bit later as the sun got a little higher sky. I think this Sunrise is suitable for framing. Thanks again Mike.
11-26-04
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of the rusty towboat named the America -- being pushed down-river to destination unknown. This pic was sent in by Mike D. He took it last Monday afternoon about 3:00 PM from his house on the Mississippi River. This is the towboat that has been moored by the Ferry landing right below Winfied Dam for many, many years. Mike was not certain of the name of the towboat, but thought it was something like the American or The Americas. I was able to contact 2 very helpful people that knew all about the vessel. Kathy Flippo of Tow Talkin and Dan Owen of the "Boat Photo Museum". They both knew the name of the boat when I described it and gave its location. It's the retired towboat "America". Dan sent me a photo of the America that was taken March 8, 1972 near Donaldsonville, La. Kathy has a picture of it in on page 31 of her book "Between the Saints: Louis and Paul." Together they provided us with the following information on the towboat. It had a sister boat named UNITED STATES. These were two of the first "Super Towboats" used on the lower Mississippi River. They both had four engines and regularly pushed 40 barges up and down the river. She is huge! 184' by 58'. She had Cooper-Bessemer diesels, which provided 9,000 horsepower, and a quadruple screw. St. Louis ship built her in 1960 for Federal Barge Line, which sold her to Logan Towing in 1980. In the 1985 Inland River Record it says, 'taken back June 1984 by Hibernia National Bank, New Orleans; sold at public auction April 1985. After removed from service, the interior was stripped and made into a floating restaurant/showboat for use at St. Paul. This did not fully materialize and the boat was later sold to the Goldstein interests of Davenport, Iowa, to be made into a landing boat for one of their casinos in the area. This again did not prove fruitful. The boat was moved to Wood River, Ill., at Economy Boat Store for a year or so, then back up to Batchtown. Thanks Mike, Kathy and Dan for all the pics and info !
11-19-04
Our River Picture for the day ------ is of the towboat Captain Bill pushing a load of barges south on the Mississippi River around UMR 234. The Name the rounded lines and the styling of the vessel caught our attention, it looks like it has a fresh coat of paint and everything was all bright and shiny. It even has a large picture window, with drapes, on the 2nd deck that goes all the way across the front of the towboat. I did an internet search and found out that this vessel was built in 1956 and originally was named the "Huntington". To search for pictures and info on a particular towboat take a look at the Photo Center at the LittleRiverBooks.com.
Gates Damaged on Aux Lock at Alton Dam ---There was an article in the Wednesday Post Dispatch that you may be interested in about damage to the gates of the auxiliary lock at Melvin Price Lock and Dam. For more information go to STLtoday.com.
The link covers the Mississippi River from Crystal City, Mo to Quincy, Ill. Map 89 through 94 cover Alton Pool. They were last updated in 2001.
Dinner Buckets ------ I got an e-mail from Kathy Flippo of "Tow Talkin" - I convinced her to look at my website. She seen the description about the work-tug pushing the front of the southbound barge into Winfield lock that I posted on 11-08-04. Anyway she was good enough to supply the correct lingo used to describe these vessels. They are called "harbor tugs" or "dinner buckets" or just "tugs". So next time you see one on the River we will all know the correct River lingo to describe them. Thanks Kathy !
11-12-04
Our River Picture for the day ------ is of the bluffs turning shades of brown as boating season goes further into fall.
More info on Grafton Harbor ------ I posted some info about the new Grafton Harbor on 10-2-04 and last night I ran across their website. It looks like the new harbor will be really nice and should compare to Alton Marina. It will be located in the center of the town and is advertised as "easy walking distance" to restaurants, wineries, etc. The new harbor will have 100 transient slips, a laundromat, internet access, showers, deli, convenience store and more ! For more info check out their website http://www.graftonharbor.net/ .
This next pic shows the work-tug pushing the front of the southbound barge towards the Missouri bank of the river. Finally the barges are in the lock . These pics are from the webcam at Winfield.
11-7-04
Our River Picture for the day ------ is of some White Pelicans that are passing through our area on their way south for the winter. We spotted these magnificent birds on a sandbar where the Mississippi River and Illinois River converge. The Loading Dock in Grafton, IL is in the background. As we tried to get a bit closer they all took to flight , flew overhead and circled around by the bluffs and landed in the open water .
11-6-04
