It's
All About "Dutch" Day
..... I snapped a
picture a cruiser heading down river on Sunday afternoon as it approached
the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. Well folks it
belongs to a year round boater, and friend of mine, named Dutch..... so I
decided to make it picture of the day today.
What a coincidence this is, because when I
updated the section named "Last Year's River Picture On This
Day" ..... I realized that the picture of the day on Jan 31,
2005 was also of Dutch's cruiser. And as I looked a bit closer I
realized that I made a mistake on Monday's version of "Last
Year's River Picture On This Day"... When I fixed it, low and behold, the
picture for Jan 30, 2005 was Dutch's cruiser also.
Today....It's
All About Dutch !
River
Bill says.......Keep on boating Dutch !

..... isn't a river picture,
but but I decide to post it anyway, just because I like it. A Key

the sail boats against the very bright setting sun...the reflection on the
water...and all of those colors that seem to almost blend together.

River
Toys ..... I
posted a picture a few days ago of some white pelicans that Mark Newlin
took from his kayak. I included another picture that he sent in of an airplane
and a SUV on a sandbar. I labeled it "A few of his other river
toys". Well, I assumed some things and I was wrong.
Marked e-mailed the correct information and I think it's pretty neat because a
person just never knows what you might see or do when you head out for a day
on the river !
Mark
wrote in his e-mail:
The
pilot's name is Tom, he took me for a ride after he landed by the sandbar just
up from Kinders. To start it he had to stand on the pontoon and spin prop by
hand. Plane's name is the "Tundra cub". it's a 42 pipercub.

Water
Quality -------- I received an e-mail from Robert Mir about an article
he seen in the St. Charles County Journal. Robert wrote ;
Bill,
in yesterdays (1/25/2006), St. Charles County Journal there is an article
about MSD asking the Environmental Protection Agency to exempt the
River Deres, Maline Creek and a portion of the Mississippi River from a
stricter EPA clean water standard. In this article, Jeff Theerman, the
executive director of MSD was quoted as saying "We
have really struggled with the idea that swimming in the Mississippi River
is a more pressing issue than sewage backing up into peoples basements".
Theerman also said that it would cost $60 - 70 million to disinfect
waste-water at its treatment plants.
Its a pretty interesting article. These aren't recently developed standards, MSD
has had years address these more stringent requirements.
The amazing thing is that the Missouri Department of Resources has already
approved this exemption. The Environmental Protection Agency hasn't decided on
the issue yet.
I couldn't find this article on line. I was hoping you could help get the word
out about this issue and help hold MSD, MDR and EPA accountable for our
health, our environment and our tax dollars.
Thanks
Robert
Mir
River
Bill says.......Thanks for the info Robert. I vote for clean
/ disinfected waste-water
discharge into the Mississippi River.
Lets spread the word and let the MSD, MRD and EPA know how we feel as
boaters on the Mississippi River !

Our

..... was taken by Mark
Newlin. He snapped a picture of these white
pelicans just above Two Branch. He wrote that he spends a
lot of time on the Mississippi in his kayak up around that
area. We got a picture of a few of his other river
toys also.
Mark
wrote in his e-mail:
My
wife's name is Karen, she didn't believe we had pelicans in Missouri, so I
took this shot just up from Two Branch. We spend a lot of time on the beaches,
be we're early birds so we miss the real wildness.
Thanks
a lot for the web-site, I've been trying to tell people that the Mississippi
is not that giant drainage ditch that you see downtown. So many people have no
idea how beautiful it is upriver.

Our
River Picture of the Day
..... is a great
panoramic river shot taken yesterday from the overlook at the Church at
Principia College by Robert Cope of the boat "Slow Ride". The larger
hot linked version is quite detailed so make sure you click
here and check it out. I think this picture was taken between the
UMR 213 and 214 mile marker. Looks like Portage Island directly
across the river and I think that is Hideaway Harbor Park on the other side of
the island.
Robert
wrote in his e-mail:
I took
my fellow boat builder and friend Paul from Colorado Springs on a sightseeing
tour around the Alton Pool today and got a good panorama shot of the river
from the overlook at the Church at Principia College. I attached it here,
but also have a few shots of the Melvin Price Locks, the Clark bridge &
the little park at the confluence of the MI & MO at the link below.
The wind was gusting at about 50 mph, and there were whitecaps everywhere.

Went
to the SLDBA Banquet at the Sheraton Four Points in Earth City this past

Dick's Halfway Inn Motorsports team back in a corner of the room.
Guess they know us pretty well :) Roger was the Master of Ceremonies as
usual and did an excellent job of keeping things moving. We got to visit
with several good friends that we just don't see enough of like John &
Terry Bowles from the SLDBA, Dave & Mary Ann Schmidt, their son,
daughter-in-law and five of their grandkids, all of whom help out with Little
Dave's boat "Just Another Quickie". Everyone we talked to is
looking forward to another great season of Drag Boat Racing. Hopefully
we will be able to make several of the races with Big Dick's Motorsports and Little
John's Marine Service. Check out some of the pictures from the
evening at:

touch the tow as it was going past. I would say this picture was

Grafton
Harbor Update ------
Charlie Wickenhauser of Grafton Harbor sent us the following update on Grafton
Harbor.
Hi
Bill,
Happy New Year. I am sending some additional pictures to update the
information about our progress.
-
The
first is the building platform which is complete and building construction
will start this week.
-
The
second is of the Containers being converted for our floating breakwater.
You can see the brackets which will hold the containers together and in place.
-
The
third is of the top of a container to show how the concrete decking will
be placed to provide the 8' by 1280' walkway on the top of the Breakwater.
-
The
fourth picture shows the progress on the Ripwrap.
We are still on schedule to float in the completed docks
mid February and start accepting boats as early as March 1st, 2006.
Our slips are filling fast and we expect a great first year. Reservations are
being accepted for our 2006 social events including the Towboat
Festival and July 4th Fireworks & Party.
Regards,
Charlie

- River Update
------
Kathy Flippo of Tow
Talkin fame at UMR 517
mile marker, in Iowa, sent us the following update from her part of the river.
Hi
Bill,
River froze over first of December, we had two weeks with snow every-other day
and a couple nights of below zero. Then came December 20th and we never saw
the sun until the 27th and then not until Jan 7. But the day temps were in
40's and the ice went out of the river and even the back sloughs. Ice
going out of pool 13 too...it's all honeycombed and lots of open water. The
eagles left, except for maybe a couple dozen, and went north to more ice. In
early December you could count well over a hundred without even having to turn
your head.

Our
River Picture(s) of the Day
........
is a series of eagle pictures taken by Captain Robert Cope, of the boat
"Slow Ride", a few weeks back. He snapped a picture of
this eagle in the trees as he was checking
out what the camera man was doing on the ground. Looks like the
eagle started to really pay attention and looked
right at Robert....Then he had enough....And....flew
off !
River
Bill says.........Robert submitted a whole series of good eagle
pictures. These are just a few of them. As always..... these
are great photos Robert....

Our
River Picture of the Day
........
is bright sunny picture of the upper
end of Dardenne Slough with the channel and Calhoun County, IL in the
distance. I thought the late afternoon sun created an interesting
affect by casting those long shadows in the foreground and everything else so
bright and sunny in the distance. Even got the shadow of my vehicle in
there...Oops !

take a look at this one. It is a very neat picture of the Grafton Ferry
in the icy water. I think the colors and reflections are great.

Our

........ Is

duck. This pic was taken by Dave Kelly, out of Woodland Marina, on one
of his many trips moving boats up and down our rivers.
River

Our
River Picture of the Day
........ Is
named The
Joy of Winterizing. It was sent in by Gramps, AKA Lloyd Dorn.
It is a picture of his son, Rick, winterizing his 24 ft. Sun Runner at the St.
Louis Yacht Club earlier this year. It takes a dedicated boater to get
into those tight quarters.

........ is
of a large bird on a point right below Sharky's Restaurant.... Looking
