Year's River Picture On This Day ------
What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?
It was
actually a series of 6 pictures
named,  "It doesn't look good !"     What is that guy doing wading in the water at the boat ramp ?     Again, we have a few clues -- OH NO !.   it's another vehicle in the water.   Keep pulling -- just a little further.    OK -   Just a little more ---Pull !  Now that we are checking things out --
are there any fish in there ?
Yes, everyone agrees
What a mess !
These pictures were taken by Lisa Beckman
a couple of summers ago at the
Long Shot Saloon in Portage Des Sioux.   She was quick to point out that it wasn't her truck, nor did it belong to any of her friends and that it took two different tow trucks to get it out.

Refinery

There was an article in yesterday's on-line Alton Telegraph with more

project and it contains some information about the company that wants to build
the refinery as well. Go to the On-Line

Went to Principia College again, but this time we
went hiking and found a way all the way out on the tip of the bluffs, It
was such a nice view, and a great sunset, my son and I just sat there for
about an hour and a half, even though we were both freezing. To top
it all off, a barge came along at just the right time to make it

What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?
It was
a picture of some of the work going on at the Calhoun Point Habitat Rehabilitation and Enhancement Project.     This picture was taken just a bit down stream from the Brussels Ferry on the Illinois River.   Some of the highlights of the project include berms to protect the 2,100 acre site from frequent sediment laden floods, provide a means to perch water on to the interior to increase waterfowl habitation and reverse some of the siltation that has occurred.   For more information go to the on-line ASE Research library.

Con Trios Yacht Club Spring Ice Breaker Pictures
------ Captain Darryll Weil, out of Woodland Harbor, sent us the
following e-mail with some links to pictures of the Con Trios Yacht Club's
Spring Ice Breaker party last weekend at Pere Marquette Lodge.
Darryll
wrote in his e-mail:
Con
Trios Yacht Club Annual
Ice Breaker
at
Pere
Marquette Lodge
March
24th & 25th, 2006
Every
year the Con
Trios Yacht Club has
an Ice Breaker Party. In years past it was an actual boat cruise down
the Mississippi to Hoppe's Marina near Festus and the party and dance were
held in the Holiday Inn in Festus. Due to the uncertainties of the
weather and ice on the river for the past several years the Ice Breaker has
bee held at Pere
Marquette Lodge north
of Grafton Illinois on the Illinois River.
This
year followed the usual plan. First we enjoyed the hospitality room with
beverages provided by the CTYC and food catered by Sharky's
Cove.
John from Sharky's then played music while everyone relaxed in the Lodge's hot
tub. Again, mysteriously, bubble bath found its way into the hot tub.
Saturday
began with some of the group taking a road trip to Grafton Illinois.
There we had to check out the Wild Goose Saloon, Senger's Tavern and Aries
Winery.
Saturday
evening began with a happy hour in the Lodge's lobby where Teri Ruf took
pictures of the members and printed them out during the evening. Denny
& Pat Galkowski set up a booth to sell Con Trios shirts and such so
Maureen didn't have to go out to the trailer to go shopping! Dinner was
served "Western" style to go with the "Western" theme of
the weekend featuring the Lodge's signature fried chicken and pork steaks.
After dinner new members were introduced and then the Shark's Band played
music. After dancing we again visited the hospitality room and hot tub.

platform.
Looks like a picture taken during the search effort. It's the Missouri
State Water Patrol doing their job....and what a cold, grim job it is

We did get a pretty good shot of one of their new
boats. Looks like quit the rig.

Attention all Boaters -----
The
Missouri State Water Patrol would like to remind boat operators that they can
begin preparing for this year's boating season early. With the
weather warming up, boating season is just around the corner. There will
not be very many opportunities left to attend a boater safety education
course in the St. Louis and St. Charles area. Boating traffic will continue
to grow and all officers will be busy patrolling the waterways. If
you have any questions regarding education or have a general boating question, please
visit www.MSWP.DPS.MO.GOV or
email us at BoatInfo@mswp.dps.mo.gov.
If
it is necessary for you to get certified, you have several options. You can
take the online course, order the home study course, or take one of our
classroom courses listed on our website. Call 1-800-830-2268 for ordering a
Missouri home study course. You may also get a certification card from any
other state's NASBLA approved course; however, you will be required to have
proof of successful completion of the course and a photo ID with you while you
are operating the boat
Just
a refresher of the law,
Missouri's mandatory Boater Safety Education law that went into effect on
January 1, 2005, required all Missouri boat operators born after January 1,
1984, to get a boater safety certification card before operating boats on the
lakes of this state. This date of birth requirement does not change for next
year. If you have a boat operator who was born after that date, they must have
successfully completed a boater safety certification course and have their
certification card with them before they can operate a vessel. It should be
noted a personal watercraft (PWC) is considered a vessel. Additionally,
beginning January 1, 2006, all non-resident boat operators born after January
1, 1984, will be required to have successfully completed a National
Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved course and
carry proof of completion with them when operating the boat.

A lot of water has flowed pass the confluence of the two rivers since this
picture was taken and a few good things have come to be that make
this picture special. The Grafton Ferry is now a sponsor of
RiverBills.com, we now have a monthly Grafton Ferry Picture Contest and I have

Year's River Picture On This Day ------
What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?
It was a picture of
the Lewis and Clark keelboat replica and tow vehicle sent in by Darryll Weil.   Darryll wrote in his e-mail that he and his friend, Ron, were returning from Woodland Marina a few weeks ago on Highway 94 heading towards St. Charles.   As they passed Highway B they came upon the restored 1954 Chevrolet truck that was hauling the Lewis and Clark keelboat replica broke down on the side of the road. They stopped to see if they could help.   They found out they were only out of gas and that the escort vehicle had already left to get some.   The driver gave them an impromptu tour of the boat and then Darryll took some pictures of the keel boat,   the Discovery Expedition logo on the door of the truck, of his friend Ron Hering posing with the driver and finally Darryll got his picture taken with the driver.

More
Info on The Other River Bill .... I
received an e-mail from Steve Pogulis. He remembers the
other River Bill floating past his place across from Two Branch island.
Steve
wrote in his e-mail:
I
can only backup the story of the guy in the picture and 'the lost motor'.. We
saw him pass by our place across from Two-Branch Island a bit earlier in 2004.
He was asking if anyone had a motor for sale.. Had a hundred-fifty bucks to
spend on it… when he said he had come down from MN… I thought one of us
was drunk for sure! At that time it seemed weird and a story that did not
totally add-up. Still felt sorry for the guy as he passed on, but he did not
ask for anything else… Glad to hear he was enjoying his journey/was by plan!
Have not seen him since, but will keep and eye out for him and get more info
if he should pass by again. Some people that seem to not have anything… have
it all in other ways!
He
should write & publish a book on his journey and he could be floating by
next time on a boat like the Miami Magic.
Have
a great day!
Steve
Pogulis RiverBill
says....Thanks for the info Steve.... I didn't really expect to
get any e-mails about
this guy when I put the note on yesterday's edition.. Just goes to show that you never know ! You never know
until you ask ! Did
anyone else spot this guy going through our area ?

Our
River Picture and Story of the Day
.... was sent in by Captain Greg
Sadowski, out of Woodland Marina. It is a good story about another River
Bill.
Greg
wrote in his e-mail:
CAN
YOU FIND THE RIVER DAWG IN THIS PICTURE ?
I took this picture in September of 2004, That's Before I met River Bill !!
Taken by the gas dock
at Mud Island Marina - Memphis, Tennessee. Mark Krull, Dolph Kraus,
and I were on our way to Miami on the "Miami
Magic".
This boater was on his way to Key West from Minnesota, and this
was not his first time making the trip. (Different Boats). He told
us that he went by the name "River
Bill".
Bill had lost an outboard motor in the Alton pool, hitting a large
submerged log.
Grafton is where he replaced it with the one you see in the
picture.
He rescued this puppy
on its way to the dog pound, to become a river dog. This was just a few days
earlier in the town of Caruthersville, MO.
I asked, What's the dog's name. He didn't have one yet. I suggested
"Skipper". He
liked it and said That'll be his name.
True
Story,
Greg
Sadowski
Anyone
out there have more info on this other River Bill? I'd like to hear about it.
RiverBill
says....Good picture and great story Greg....Thanks
!
I did an internet search and only found a few other River Bill's out there ??? Maybe one of our readers

with a personnel carrier attached. It's a splendid way to go from Camp
Carl at Heartland, through the river bottoms to Woodland Marina and then on to
Captain Jacks. Just add a few brave River
Rats and your ready to go.
Well nothing is that easy ! There is always a few obstacles and on this
day, last weekend, the obstacle was mud
and more
mud .
Finally made it Woodland Marina for a bite to eat
at Sharkys and then off
through more river bottoms and on to Captain
Jack's . After a visit with Jack and Denise we
pointed the River Chair-Ee'-it back towards home.
Of course on the trip back we found more
mud. A few places the going really got
rough.

Our
River Picture of the Day
.....is of River Dawg
named....Wade...checking out his new owner's boat. I think that he looks
right at home. Hope he has passed the Safe Boating Class !
Wade is a new member of Mark and Kathy Sweetman's household. Mark is a
member of the 2005 Jamaica Daze band, 2nd
Nature. He wrote in his e-mail:
All's
well here. The band took February off to learn a bunch of new material
and do some recording. We'll be back on stage next week, and we've got good
gigs booked through the Spring with a lot of interest from some big new
venues, though they're mostly "down here in the South".
The sad news is that our dog, Ladd, died a few weeks ago. It was really hard
on us, especially Kathy. Throughout her life, Kathy has never been without a
dog for very long, so we stopped by a local pet store where Stray Rescue was
showing off some of their dogs hoping for families to adopt them.
If you don't know anything about Stray Rescue of St. Louis, check them out!
They are a terrific organization.
We found a GREAT dog. His name is Wade. He's an 85-pound lab/chow mix, and
they say he's two years old. I think he's younger than that, but there's no
doubt in our minds that he'll instantly take to river life.
Today was a beautiful day, so Wade and I went out to take the cover off the
jet boat to see how it survived the winter. With a little coaxing, Wade
climbed up on the boat from the back where the yard rises at the end of the
driveway to give a little "step up". Once up, Wade was at home and
sat right down in the driver's seat as if to say, "Hop in! I'll
drive."
See ya soon,
-m
