MarineMax Holds Unique Boating Class for Women

Women on Water® Class Helps Women Take Safely to the Sea

WHO:              Women of St. Louis Area

Maybe it’s the mermaids fault.  For centuries women were not welcome on most ships, in part because of seamen’s superstitions.  Today, more women are involved in boating than ever before, but many still leave the piloting of a boat to men.

WHAT:            Women on Water (W.O.W.) Class

MarineMax, the nation’s largest boating and yacht retailer, is doing its part to help women take safely to the sea.  The W.O.W. class is more than just a class – it’s a hands-on educational experience.  The small group seminar, for women only, is taught by St. Louis ’ own Captain JD Schmid.  It is designed to give women the knowledge and confidence necessary to pilot a boat and have a great time doing so.  In a classroom setting and then behind the wheel of a MarineMax Sea Ray, women will learn basic marine rules and how to dock a boat, tie marine knots and use a marine radio, among other things.

MarineMax W.O.W. classes have been a huge hit across the country, and the class is now free and open to the public in St. Charles .  Space is limited.  To reserve your spot in the class, please call 636.946.5586.

 WHEN:            Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

WHERE:          Polestar Marina ( MarineMax Port Arrowhead)

River Pictures And E-mail of The Day........  are from Captain Darryll Weil, who hails out of Woodland Marina in the boat "After You".  Darryll has a good story about boating with his dad in the swimming pool at Blue Springs Lodge many years ago..

Darryll wrote;

Growing up my dad always had a boat and we owned Blue Springs Pool in Fenton.  So, one day, probably over a few cold ones, my dad decided to put our boat in the pool.  With the help of my Uncle Buss and several of our regular customers, the motor was removed, fence taken down and the boat and motor carried into the pool where it was re-assembled!  If I recall correctly the boat was a 15' wood Delta with about a 40 horsepower Mercury.  This is the same boat I learned to drive in at Lake of the Ozarks.  Here's a couple of pics of the adventure.  In the starboard side pic I am the one standing in the pass through with my uncle driving.  In the port side pic my Dad is driving and I am the on the one in back with the paddle.

Enjoy, Darryll

Last Year On this Day the 1st Reports of a Giant Catfish Being Caught In The Mississippi River Started to Surface --------- the "paper edition" of the Alton Telegraph had an article about a man from Godfrey, named  Tim Pruitt, that caught a 124 pound blue catfish in the Mississippi River.  He hooked the fish near the confluence of the Mississippi and  Missouri using 30 pound test line.  Many reports had it as the largest blue catfish ever caught in Illinois and  "the world."

Drag Boat Races  ------Captain Darryll sent us the following e-mail about the drag boat races last weekend in Poplar Bluff, Mo..

Darryll wrote:

May 19th, 20th & 21st, 2006 we went to the 18th Annual Budweiser Drag Boat Nationals at Lake Wappapello-Poplar Bluff, Mo with Big Dick's Halfway Inn Motorsports Drag Boat Team and Little John's Marine Service.  We were running four boats altogether.  A Pro Mod called "Dick Tater", a Top Eliminator called "Kwitchabitchin", a Modified Eliminator called "One Xtreme Ride" and a waverunner called "Daddy's Little Girl".  Maureen and I went along to help with the T Shirt sales and took care of the cooking for the crew during the weekend.  Little John used my Explorer as tow vehicle for his boat "Kwitchabitchin" as we had to take his truck in to get some exhaust work done.

Friday we got all set up in the pits and did some tuning and testing.  Saturday during qualifying we cracked a head on "Kwitchabitchin" after turning in some pretty decent runs.  This left it up to "Dick Tater" and "One Xtreme Ride" to shoot for wins.  "Daddy's Little Girl" made some exhibition passes as there weren't enough waverunners to make up a class.  During Sunday's elimination runs "One Xtreme Ride" had a starter switch fail at the line and had to be towed in.  Had it just started and made it past the start line it would have won because the boat in the other lane redlighted.  "Dick Tater" won it's first round and then blew a blower belt in the finals after Brutus had hole shot the other boat and was well ahead at half course.  So Brutus and "Dick Tater" wound up with a 2nd Place trophy.  The T Shirt sales went well so all in all a pretty good weekend.  Check out the pictures at:

Last Year's River Picture On This Day  ------ What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?

The picture on this day last year was an aerial shot of the river taken  somewhere near Winfield Lock and Dam .   Steve Schulte could not pin point the exact location, but I think he took this picture looking down river,  near the area of the Cuivre Slough.   You can almost see the bluffs at  the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers in the far distance (right hand side of the picture).   I think that the channel of the Mississippi River is in the far distance and the Cuivre Slough is sort of in the center of the picture.  There looks to be a land locked slough in the right / bottom of the pic.  I am going to guess that the three large islands, from left to right,  are Peruque Island, Island No 508 and then Two Branch Island.   What do you think ?

Check out Steve's website by clicking  his link on the right hand side of this web page. He is always adding new photo's...... Thanks for this picture Steve !

Last Year's River Picture On This Day  ------ What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?

The picture on this day last year was of a 125 ft. Ovation  that was in the  Alton Pool then.    This grand looking vessel is being piloted by Captain Greg Sadowski and crew  from La Crosse, Wisconsin to Detroit, Michigan.  The first leg of this journey is down the Mississippi River from La Crosse to St. Louis and then up the Illinois River through Chicago and on to Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

The History of the Kingdom of Calhoun  ------ I was "trolling" around on the internet and happened to run on to a bit of history about Calhoun County, IL that was published by Infobahn Outfitters, Inc..

Calhoun County....you know where it's at......... home to Kinder's Restaurant, Cedar Hill Resort, the towns of Golden Eagle, Brussels, Hardin, etc.   It's a peninsula of land that is almost an island in the middle of two great rivers, the mighty Mississippi on the west, the Illinois River on the east with the confluence of the two at it's southern most point. ( map )     It originally was part of a military tract in Illinois that was set aside as "bounty lands" for the veterans of the war of 1812.

The county is named for John C. Calhoun (1782 - 1850).  He was a lawyer, a statesman and champion of southern rights.   Click here to read more about Calhoun County.
