MarineMax
Holds Unique Boating Class for Women
Women
on Water®
Class Helps Women Take Safely to the Sea
WHO:
Women
of
St. Louis
Area
Maybe
it’s the mermaids fault. For centuries women were not welcome on most
ships, in part because of seamen’s superstitions. Today, more women
are involved in boating than ever before, but many still leave the piloting of
a boat to men.
WHAT:
Women on Water (W.O.W.) Class
MarineMax,
the nation’s largest boating and yacht retailer, is doing its part to help
women take safely to the sea. The W.O.W. class is more than just a class
– it’s a hands-on educational experience. The small group seminar,
for women only, is taught by
St. Louis
’ own Captain JD Schmid. It is designed to give women the knowledge
and confidence necessary to pilot a boat and have a great time doing so.
In a classroom setting and then behind the wheel of a MarineMax Sea Ray, women
will learn basic marine rules and how to dock a boat, tie marine knots and use
a marine radio, among other things.
MarineMax W.O.W. classes have been a huge hit across the country, and the
class is now free and open to the public in
St. Charles
. Space is limited. To reserve your spot in the class, please call
636.946.5586.
WHEN:
Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:00
p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
WHERE:

Dave Kelly sent us this picture of a WW

Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI. The city of
Manitowoc and the museum are both located on the shores of Lake
Michigan. The connection they have to the Mississippi River is that
submarines were built in Manitowoc during WW II, loaded on
floating dry docks and transported down the Illinois River and then the
Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks for the picture and

Pictures And E-mail of The Day........
are from Captain Darryll Weil, who hails out of Woodland Marina in the boat
"After You". Darryll has a good story about boating with his
dad in the swimming pool at Blue Springs Lodge many years ago..
Darryll
wrote;
Growing
up my dad always had a boat and we owned Blue Springs Pool in Fenton.
So, one day, probably over a few cold ones, my dad decided to put our boat in
the pool. With the help of my Uncle Buss and several of our regular
customers, the motor was removed, fence taken down and the boat and motor
carried into the pool where it was re-assembled! If I recall correctly
the boat was a 15' wood Delta with about a 40 horsepower Mercury. This
is the same boat I learned to drive in at Lake of the Ozarks. Here's a
couple of pics of the adventure. In the starboard side pic I am the one
standing in the pass through with my uncle driving. In the port
side pic my Dad is driving and I am the on the one in back with the paddle.

Drag
Boat Races
------Captain Darryll sent us the following e-mail about the drag boat races
last weekend in Poplar Bluff, Mo..
Darryll
wrote:
May
19th, 20th & 21st, 2006 we went to the 18th
Annual Budweiser Drag Boat Nationals at Lake Wappapello-Poplar Bluff, Mo
with Big
Dick's Halfway Inn Motorsports Drag Boat Team and Little
John's Marine Service. We were running four boats altogether.
A Pro Mod called "Dick Tater", a Top Eliminator called "Kwitchabitchin",
a Modified Eliminator called "One Xtreme Ride" and a waverunner
called "Daddy's Little Girl". Maureen and I went along to help
with the T Shirt sales and took care of the cooking for the crew during the
weekend. Little John used my Explorer as tow vehicle for his boat "Kwitchabitchin"
as we had to take his truck in to get some exhaust work done.
Friday
we got all set up in the pits and did some tuning and testing. Saturday
during qualifying we cracked a head on "Kwitchabitchin" after
turning in some pretty decent runs. This left it up to "Dick
Tater" and "One Xtreme Ride" to shoot for wins.
"Daddy's Little Girl" made some exhibition passes as there weren't
enough waverunners to make up a class. During Sunday's elimination runs
"One Xtreme Ride" had a starter switch fail at the line and had to
be towed in. Had it just started and made it past the start line it
would have won because the boat in the other lane redlighted. "Dick
Tater" won it's first round and then blew a blower belt in the finals
after Brutus had hole shot the other boat and was well ahead at half course.
So Brutus and "Dick Tater" wound up with a 2nd Place trophy.
The T Shirt sales went well so all in all a pretty good weekend. Check
out the pictures at:

Boat Races, Poplar Bluff 2006

Year's River Picture On This Day ------ What the heck was the
picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?
The
picture on this day last year was an
aerial shot of the river taken somewhere
near Winfield Lock and Dam . Steve Schulte could not pin
point the exact location, but I think he took this picture looking down
river, near the area of the Cuivre Slough. You can almost
see the bluffs at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers
in the far distance (right hand side of the picture). I think that
the channel of the Mississippi River is in the far distance and the Cuivre
Slough is sort of in the center of the picture. There looks to be a land
locked slough in the right / bottom of the pic. I am going to guess that
the three large islands, from left to right, are Peruque Island, Island
No 508 and then Two Branch Island. What do you think ?
Check out Steve's website by
clicking his link on the right hand side of this web page. He is always
adding new photo's...... Thanks

The

The
History of the Kingdom of Calhoun ------
I was "trolling" around on the internet and happened to run on to a
bit of history about Calhoun County, IL that was published by Infobahn
Outfitters, Inc..
Calhoun
County....you know where it's at......... home to Kinder's Restaurant, Cedar
Hill Resort, the towns of Golden Eagle, Brussels, Hardin, etc.
It's a peninsula of land that is almost an island in the middle of two great
rivers, the mighty Mississippi on the west, the Illinois River on the east
with the confluence of the two at it's southern most point. ( map
) It originally was part of a military tract in
Illinois that was set aside as "bounty lands" for the veterans of
the war of 1812.
The county is named for John C. Calhoun (1782 - 1850). He was a lawyer,
a statesman and champion of southern rights. Click

River Pictures
and E-mail of The Day.........are
of River Dawg
"Cato" and Cameron
and Amy Imming's new boat.
Cameron
and Amy wrote in their e-mail;
Bill,
I
just wanted to say I look forward to checking the site everyday for my lunch
break.
Thanks for the daily dose of aquatic life to keep satisfied until I can
launch again. This April my wife and I decided to celebrate our one-year
Anniversary by trading in the old
boat
for something
more accommodating (photo) when bringing out friends as well as
children someday. We
only had a two-day window to go pick it up (located in MI) or we would have
had to wait until after Memorial Day. We left Saint Louis at 9PM
Wednesday and drove straight through to pick up the new girl. We were
back home and on the water by noon Friday. Our inaugural river cruise
proved to us we made the right decision and look forward to many years on the
Alton Pool.
I allowed the wife to name the boat and she appropriately picked "Storm
Point."
It has many meanings. First, I proposed to my wife in Yellowstone
(on Memorial Day weekend) on a rock ledge named Storm Point (photo),
overlooking Yellowstone Lake.
Secondly, we have been known to have a tiff or two on who gets to drive
or who is pulling who bad on the wakeboards. And
lastly, I tend to get very hot headed when told I have to attend weddings or
any other family function between Memorial Day and Labor Day, unless of course
its at the river, a lake, or pool big enough for a boat. Or I
guess if it’s raining or a freak summer freezes.
There's just too little time to not be boating.
Lastly, our river dog "Cato" (photo) really digs the new ride
and loves his new view.
I also wanted to send along a picture of two great friends and their
dogs. Todd & Colleen with their dogs Lucky and Nitro just joined the
nautical club this year with a new
boat purchase as well.
Thanks for the great site Bill!
Cameron
& Amy Imming

Says........Good luck with your new purchase, make sure to take care of
that river dawg and hope to see ya on the river.

is from Kelly Ross, who hails out of Grafton Harbor in the
boat Pretty
Woman. They took a cruise up the Illinois River to Hardin on Saturday
the 29th of April and snapped this picture of the bridge that crosses the
river there..
This is the bridge that raises straight up and down for tows and other large
vessels traveling the Illinois River. The pulleys and counter weights
are clearly visible in the towers that are located on each side of the span
that raises and lowers.

We had a safe, but long trip to Waco Texas. The weekend was kind of a
mouse hunt to get all the bugs out of four boats. We did end up with a

Pro Mod boat took 3rd place
The
KWITCHABITCHEN
Top Eliminator boat, put on a respectable show for the first time out
on a new boat, and new motor.
The

Was number one qualifier in its class
DADDYS
LITTLE GIRL
Our wave runner Piloted by Ashly Ruf took about 4th, or 5th in its class. It
was Ashley’s first trip on a racetrack. Although she was not in the
top of her class, she made some racers with ten years experience very nervous.
At least two of our boats, and Keith Ruf’s new hauler, will be on
display at St. Charles Boat And Motor for their open house this weekend,
May 6th and 7th.

Missouri's
Blue Catfish .........
I heard a "sandbar rumor" about a 60 lb blue catfish that was
supposedly caught at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers
recently. When I was searching the internet for information, I ran
across an article in The
Memphis Edge that the fisherman among us might be interested
in. It's an article about how Missouri is protecting it's blue
catfish by reducing the daily limit to 5...... (It was 10).
The Missouri Department Of Conservation has that information about the change
in the law on their website. Go to MDC.online
for complete info.

Boat
People .........
There was an article in Sunday's St. Louis Post Dispatch titled
"Boat People". It's an article about Dan Owens and his
Boat Photo Museum that is located in Maryville, Mo. It consists of about
40,000 photos of inland waterway boats.....mostly
towboats. Dan's website is http://boatphotos.home.mindspring.com/welcome.html
Go to
STLtoday.com
for the complete story.
RiverBill
says.......Dan has requested a few pictures that I took for his
collection. He seen them on RiverBills and emailed me, asking for
a copy .......So...If you have some good pictures of towboats, contact Dan, he
may want a copy.
Another good place to look at pictures of towboats is The
Boat Photo Center page in LittleRiverBooks.com. Look up the towboat named
"Captain Bill"....
I took the picture because of the "name" and "styling" of
the old towboat ...After posting it on RiverBills.com, they e-mailed me and
ask for a copy.

the CJ's tiki bar roof remained intact !

Last
Year's River Picture On This Day ------
What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?
The
picture on this day last year was of
the Cajun
Cabin   that is owned by Gary
and Judy Meinershagen. Gary and Judy hail out of The Yacht Club of St. Louis in
the boat named "Beads Beads
Beads". You have to agree that because of the color, this
place really stands out. The cabin is located on
Lehmond Island and was built in 1959 by Gary's father and uncle. A
person can spot the cabin from the upper end of Dardenne Slough at around the UMR 227.5
mile marker. It sets 2 or 3 houses in from the slough.
Lehmond Island has almost become part of the mainland these days at normal water
levels, but when the water comes up a bit, it is an island. When the
water gets to high Gary and Judy have to go in by small boat, just like they do in
the Louisiana Bayou Cajun Country ~ ~ hence~ ~ "The Cajun
Cabin".
The Cajun colors were artfully chosen by Judy
Good Job
Judy
