Darryll wrote in his e-mail;

Bill,

   The Delmar Gardens Nursing Home in Fenton has a fireworks display the Wednesday before the Fourth every year.  My brother DJ and his wife Trish live about 400 feet from where they launch the fireworks.  We sat on their deck and they literally exploded right over us!  I put together a collage of some of the better pics I got.  Thought it would be a good prequel to the upcoming weekend.

Last Year's River Picture On This Day ------ What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?

  It was a picture sent in by Bert Yates.  "Here’s a sight not often seen on the Upper Miss.  The bright white cylinders laying on their side are two of the four steam generators being replaced at Callaway during last fall’s outage.  The trip started from Chalon, France on May 12th and they arrived at Callaway’s Missouri River docking facility on June 21st.   Each steam generator weighs in at a svelte 371.5 tons, not including the packing and shipping containers.  Not quite what Mike Tyson tipped the scales for his last fight, but definitely in the heavyweight class! "

  Thanks for the picture and the interesting narrative  Bert.

Our Picture and E-mail Of The Day -----  is from Captain Darryll Weil, who hails out of Woodland Marina in the boat "After You".  Darryll updated his website with some pictures from the Grafton Towboat Festival.

 Darryll wrote in his e-mail:

Went up to the river over the weekend.  George and Nancy came up on Saturday and we took a "2 Hour Cruise" because you know what happens if you take a "3 Hour Cruise"!  Then we took the Grafton Ferry over to the Towboat Festival held at The Loading Dock in Grafton, went to the Wild Goose Saloon for Awesome Cheeseburgers and then to the Aries Winery.  Got back to the marina and found Crusher and Penny helping Gary and Sue ready their slip for the new boat.  Sunday we headed up to Two Branch Island and anchored out with Gary and Kathleen on their houseboat, "River Dreams"  Weather was picture perfect all weekend and it's great to see the new boat next to us in the dock.  Click on the link below to see all the pics.  Scroll down on each picture to see slide show controls and read the comments.

Blessing of the Fleet Enters 49th Year

…With a Few Changes

 Boating enthusiasts anticipate the annual Blessing of the Fleet to be held this year on Sunday, July 16th.  This years Parade of Boats and Blessing of the Fleet honors tradition, but a few changes have been made to the route to accommodate ease in participation and encourage attendance.  The decorating theme for this year is “Vacation Fun Under the St. Louis Sun”, allowing participants to promote their favorite St. Louis Summertime event or activity, sport or recreation thru creatively decorating their vessels to this theme.  For example, the St. Louis Zoo, Forest Park, The Munie, Baseball Cardinals, or New Bush Stadium, some may choose places like Six Flags, The Arch or Missouri Wine Country to name a few.  Participating vessels may gather at the parade origin, Yacht Club of St. Louis, St. Charles, or may join the parade in progress at the end of the line as it passes each harbor along the route.  Parade Patrol boats will be stationed along the route and available for assistance where needed. Use your creative talent in decorating with your favorite theme include music and costume, join the fun to “WOW” the Judges and win a memorable prize while enjoying a festive and most enjoyable day on the water with family and friends.

 Launching at 1 PM on Sunday, July 16th from Yacht Club of St. Louis, the boats proceed downstream in main channel of the Mississippi River, single file, to mile 221.2 where it turns toward the Missouri shore, proceeding upstream, 50’ between each boat, to pass at approximately 2:15 PM the Shrine of Our Lady of the River where the priest Fr. Robert Banken, of St. Francis of Assisi, Portage de Sioux will bless each boat.  Immediately following the blessing, the parade continues upstream past the VIP Boat and Judges Boat for Review and disburses on  to Grafton Harbor for Announcement of Winners, Awards Presentation and Festivities immediately following the Blessing. Docking and Assistance is available to all Finalists at Grafton Harbor where refreshments are available and the Final Winners will be announced!  Look for Our New Flyers they are available at Your Harbors.

 The Shrine honors the memory of the 1951 flood that nearly swallowed the tiny town of Portage des Sioux.  Residents prayed to Mary, “The Lady of the Rivers”, and watched as the waters slowly receded.  Moved by the miracle, the residents and local businesses erected a shrine in 1957.  A several years ago, the famous traveler, Lowell Thomas, and the nations’ top newspaper editors, picked 43 places of interest, as suggested vacation destinations for Americans to visit.  The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rivers was included.  Veteran river people say there is no more beautiful sight, from Minneapolis to New Orleans, than this area of Portage des Sioux with the Shrine and palisades on the opposite side of the river.

John wrote in his e-mail:

Hi Bill,

My buddies and I fish the river every Thursday after work.  We are all Boeing employees or retirees.  Last Thursday, June 15, we were pulling into a fishing spot near a wing dam below Kinder's when this fish jumped into our boat creating quite a ruckus. .  We fish out of a deep-vee Starcraft boat so it took some muscle for the fish to propel itself  that far out of the water.  Dave Clapper is the guy holding the fish.  Ray Shank and Emmett Conroy are the other two who were with us that night.

We boat out of Two Branch.

I visit your site every day.   Keep up the good work

John Richmond

RiverBill says...Thanks for the picture and great fish story John !

   We have all heard jokes and stories about fish jumping into boats over the years......none of us really believed the stories....but it is happening right here on the river !   Wow !

Bill,

Here are some aerial shots of the horse shoe dykes.  It's obvious that some of the boaters can't see them on the water as well as we can see them from the air.  Watch out for them!

Sherri

RiverBill says...Thanks for the aerial pictures Sherri....Now we know exactly what this set of dikes look like from the air and their relation to river channel and the river banks.  This also shows how they are positioned to keep the main flow of water in the channel.

Hey Bill,

Our 2nd year went off with a bang.  The Beach Wear Competition saw triple the entries and the crowd was steady and fun all day, even with the threat of rain.  Your River Dogs were on a board posted right underneath the donation Dog House and got a ton of looks.  Tell everyone that this is something that we definitely want to continue next year, so keep sending us your River Dogs and if there are any River Dogs at next year’s event stop by and say “Hi”  I am the one running crazy trying to attend to a bunch of musicians needs.  Lol.  Great success again this year, thanks for all your help and look forward to bigger and better next year.

BTW there are pictures posted on the dog days web site.  www.dogdaysofsummer.org.  Thanks again.

You Might Be A River Boater If...........  Little John us an e-mail of un-known origin titled:

 Why You Think You Might Be A River Boater

  • You think $3/gal for gas is a great deal

  • You have $15k worth of electronic navigation gear but you never leave the Alton pool

  • You think "size" matters

  • You spend thousands of $$ on an activity you get to do a most weekends during a 6 month period each year

  • Your beer cooler might bigger than your gas tank

  • You can back a boat trailer but can't parallel park

  • You know what "SPF" stands for

  • You could, in a pinch, use your gold chain for an anchor (oops, that would be a "lake boater, sorry...)

  • You have used something called "bilge soap"

  • You use the terms "port" & "starboard" while driving your car

  • The first thing you look at in the paper each day is the river stage

  • And last but not least, you might be a boater if you ever had a fight with your spouse, stormed out of the house and spent the night on the boat!!

Note:  If you are the author of the above,  please e-mail me and I will post you name.

River Bill says.....I just had to add a few of my own to the list:

  • Your boat cost more than your first house did !

  • The stereo in your boat is better than the one in your home !

  • You only have one engine in your car, but need two in your boat !

  • You know what a river dike is !  (Oops..another lake boater jab)

Our River Pictures and e-mail of The Day...........  are from Mark Newlin, who can be seen kayaking around on the Mississippi River from time to time near the Isle of Two Branch.

  Mark wrote in his e-mail:

Bill,

   Kayaked around "Two Branch Island" Saturday and was pleasantly surprised how few boats were out on such a nice day. Guess the gas prices might have something to do with that.

Can't beat how cheap kayaking is.

Thanks,

Mark  (red kayak)

RiverBill says...Thanks for the picture Mark.........Looks to me like the pictures are from the area between the Illinois side of the river and the island....I am going to guess that the one with the kayak in it is looking up-river..

FIRST ANNUAL LOCK AND DAM 23 SANDBAR PARTY........  I received an e-mail from Jamie Caroll, of Two Rivers Marina,  about a sand bar party that is being put on by the Two Rivers Boat Club that we are all invited to attend.

Jamie Wrote:

Bill,

This is a party that the Two Rivers Marina Boat Club is sponsoring and I thought that you might be able to put it on the website so that everyone can come and have some fun. Since the corps has limited them in the marina they are taking it out on the sandbar .....it sounds like it should be a great time and thought other boaters might want to know about it. The following information is what the boat club sent to me about it so if you could post a little something or just spread the word we would sure appreciate it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FIRST ANNUAL LOCK AND DAM 23 SANDBAR PARTY:
Approximately Mile Marker 290, or the new north sandbar.  June 24th, all day events sponsored by TRBC.  This is the summer event you don’t want to miss.  Other boat clubs have been invited.   Among the activities planned by our Entertainment Committee (round of applause please):
  • Mississippi Riverbottom Queen Contest:  Men only.  (I don’t know the rules on this one but it sounds like it has possibilities).
  • Whiffleball Contest
  • Volleyball Tournament
  • Election Lock and Dam 23 Harbor Master
  • Many more activities as well….
TRBC will be serving food for a very reasonable cost.  The menu available should be something along the line of hamburgers, porkburgers and brats.  There is the possibility of purchasing a commemorative cup for the occasion for a reasonable fee.  Contents to fill the cup with will be donated by the Boat Club such as margaritas, daiquiris etc.  As this will be the first time we have celebrated Lock and Dam 23 with a sandbar party, there will be special t-shirts printed up and available for the event as well.
The band for the event, Hand over Fist, will begin playing about 8:00 p.m.  Donations will be accepted from the audience to help support cost of the band.
Note:  The Corps of Engineers in its infinite wisdom dispensed with plans for Lock and Dam 23, so it does not truly exist in the physical sense.  Dams 22 and 24 are in a fine state of existence.  This party is being held as close to the nonexistent location of the proposed Lock and Dam 23 as is possible, to celebrate the fact it was never built.
Captain Crash............
    Another great river story by
    Rick Sievers
Rick Siievers
    Long ago, we used to have a harbor neighbor that we affectionately called "Captain Crash". We so nicknamed him because quite frankly any docking or launching he and his crew could walk away from was a good one. We didn't really blame him, he was getting rather old and his boating days were getting fewer in number quickly, but he scared the hell out of us on a regular basis. The worst scare was as follows: Back then, my wife and I had an old 27' Bayliner with an aft cabin and no air-conditioning yet. On a particular 4th of July night, we were on the boat and it was late. The summer air was like paste and hung on our bodies like a cheap suit. We had been trying to sleep but couldn't so my wife went up on deck and sat in a chair for a bit while I stayed below. After a short time I heard my wife knock on the hatch; "Rick, Captain Crash is coming in" My reply; "That's nice dear" A few seconds later she tapped again. "He's on fire" Needless to say I was up on deck in half a tick. Sure enough, here he came looking like a coal fired locomotive from the 1880's right up the middle of the harbor. I thought; "surely he's not going to come in like that", but with his usual aplomb he pulled right into his slip next to us with a wham that would heel over the Queen Mary 10°. I grabbed a knife and informed my wife that it is entirely possible that I may have to cut the ropes and we'll have to continue our delightful sleepless night elsewhere while we watch our dock burn down!  Smoke quickly filled the area and was so dense we literally could not make out his boat. All we saw and heard was silhouettes illuminated by his cabin lights moving about quickly, and muffled voices in the smoke. It looked like an Indian war camp gone amok. Then, as quick as it started, the smoke cleared away revealing the vestige of his boat and crew. I suppose the shocked visage of my wife, and me standing there with a big knife in hand like Davy Crockett ready for a fight looked as startling to him as well. "Oh, hi -lotta smoke huh"? was all he could rasp out to me. Then, with a trail of smoke still hanging in the dense summer air like some kind of nebulous demon, he and his wife and crew got out, marched up the gang plank, hopped in the car and vanished into the night! All my wife and I could do is stand there with incredulous looks on our faces like two cartoon characters that just had a bank safe dropped on their heads from a second story balcony! Needless to say, there was to be no sleep that night. I stayed up the rest of the night watching for some conflagration to rekindle on his wooden boat until the sun was well up, and my eyes were the color of the Bloody Mary I was now thinking about, but never occurred, fortunately! As it turns out, the problem was that he had an ancient marine radio, the kind that took up half of the dash panel, and it shorted out, igniting the wiring and immediate area behind it. They simply beat out the fire with their hands and rolled up cloths. I was amazed at how much smoke had been generated by what had burned. Not long after that, as an epilogue, the old gent was selling his boat and was afraid someone would siphon his gas so he pulled off the hose from the gas filler port. Having then forgotten this, he was going to show the boat to a prospective customer and proceeded to pour 15 gallons of gas into his bilge! As you may suspect, his automatic bilge pump was in perfect working order and commenced to discharge all of it into the harbor! Then as fate would have it, here came another harbor resident down the gangplank with his obligatory cigarette hanging out of his mouth. An onrush of panicked boaters ushered him back up the plank and "de-cigaretted" him, much to his dismay. Every boat in the harbor contributed their supply of dishwashing soap to the cause and another calamity was avoided while we all enjoyed a harbor full of bubbles.
And that is why boats and docks need fire extinguishers, and boaters need another drink
Rick Sievers
Last Year's River Picture On This Day ------ What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?
  It was a picture of some  River Goats   on Goat Island !    I don't think that is the real name of the island, but that is what I  have heard it affectionately called by a few boaters. It is  pretty neat  ~ goats living on an island in Alton Pool.  No location on this one because I am not sure the owners (nor the goats)  want a lot of boaters hanging around.
  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Alton Pool
Memorial Holiday Weekend
The officers on the Alton Pool were busy this holiday weekend. MSWP officers focused their attention around the congested areas such as Iowa Island, Dardenne Slough and near Grafton. One main concern for the MSWP was the barge traffic. Boaters must be aware that barges have terrible blind spots and can take up to a mile to stop. Regardless if you (a boater) know where you are going, the barge operator may not. You can be cited for impeding/blocking flow of traffic in the navigational channel. One boater was arrested for this offense as well as boating while intoxicated. This weekend, MSWP officers on the Alton Pool, arrested only a half of dozen intoxicated operators(BWI), one driving while intoxicated(DWI) one boating accident(several boats did hit wing dikes but reports were not taken), and other arrests were made for non-boating violations.
State wide, the Water Patrol reported 24 boating accidents with 5 serious injuries and 1 death, 61 boating while intoxicated (BWI) arrests, 127 drug arrests, 2 driving while intoxicated (DWI), and 2 drownings. These numbers are less than last year, and may be attributed to the mandatory boater education requirement and increased patrols. Unfortunately, we have a decrease in boating accidents and fatalities but one accident or death is too many. Remember it is the responsibility of everyone that boats and enjoys the water to keep it safe. Just remember, the goal of every water bound vacation is to return home safely.
Our River Dawg Picture and E-mail of The Day  ......  was sent in by Captain Dave Vance.....It's a shot of River Dawg " Cody"  looking cool, with sun glasses and all,  riding the jetski with owner Shelly Daugherty...
Dave wrote in his e-mail
Bill,
  Thanks for the great website.   But I noticed that some of the recent "River Dawgs" look more like a Paris Hilton pet than the authentic hounds found on and in the muddy Mississippi.   This is our lab  "Cody" who can usually be found retrieving logs or jetski riding in the Two Branch area.
Capt. Dave
River Bill says........Good shot Dave of a real cool River Dawg !
Last Year's River Picture On This Day ------ What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?
  It was actually a "Historical Graph" of the   Water Temperature of Alton Pool from Jan 2004 until May 2005.    We had some questions on the Message Board about the river water temperature.  The person wrote "Wondering what the average temperature of the river was last summer"  and "When will it get warmer ?"
  I wrote an evasive answer to the reply because I didn't have any data on actual river water temperatures.   Well, the head of RiverBill's Research Department seen the reply and got his anchor rope all in a knot.    He insisted that we could do better and off he went on another research project. Oh Buoy!  He contacted the Corps of Engineers and requested some historical water temperature data.  You know what ~ he go it!  All the way back to 2004 for both Winfield and Alton Dams.
  He plotted the data and began studying it when he noticed that there was a difference in water temperature at the two dams.  4 degrees on average.  So we can say that the water warms about one degree for every 10 miles it flows in Alton Pool !
    So when will the water get warmer ?  It is getting warmer each week until a peak temperature is reached sometime in mid - July.  It should get to be about 80 degrees if this year is anything like 2004..
   What was the average temperature last summer ?   The average at Winfield was 77.2 degrees and at Alton it was 80.4 degrees for the months of June, July and August.
    RiverBill says.....  We lost our access to the river temperature sensors earlier this year....I have found another location to acquire water temperature, but it is only updated weekly instead of hourly.
   FYI....the river water temperature as been stuck at 68 degrees the last few weeks.
Don't Leave Life Jackets Behind, Safety Expert Warns....... There was an article in the on-line Alton Telegraph on Monday about boating safety with lots and lots of statistics about boats and boating accidents.  The article states the number one cause of death in recreational boating is drowning !
Click here to go to the on-line Alton Telegraph and read the article.
Added A Mark Twain Heading and Link....... Every river website needs some Mark Twain...So I added a new "Mark Twain " section in the left hand column.  The 1st link is to the "Ultimate Mark Twain Guide" in Hannibal.net .....Check It out !
