Stop Building The Levees ........ The on-line Post Dispatch had a very good editorial in yesterday's edition written by Timothy Kusky  titled......

"Wake-up Call Is Sounding:  We Must Stop Building Levees".

   The editorial describes how the people around St. Louis barely escaped disaster this past May as flood waters rose to nearly "Great Flood proportions."

    We are fortunate that those levees up river failed, because it spread the high water out across the natural flood plains, as it has for thousands of years, thus lowering the water level in the river. It could have been 1993 again !
    "There is an important lesson here. If the failure of levees upstream prevents flooding downstream, then the opposite also must also be true: The construction of new levees raises water levels downstream from them, causing more severe flooding than if the levees had not been there in the first place. "......

LOST .......... Lost on Sunday ( 5/27/07)  somewhere in the slough by Grafton Harbor... .a very large white ( kinda dirty) fender tied to a plastic "j" fender hook that obviously doesn't work that good , hence it falling off while everybody was taking off during Sunday's 5:00PM rain.

   If anybody has found it, I would be glad to pick up.

Thanks so much.

We were anchored in Two Branch slough about mid afternoon last Saturday, when we heard a low flying aircraft nearby. Mary grabbed the camera and took a few shots of this Aviat Husky http://www.aviataircraft.com/ on floats, (pontoons for us water bound creatures), which made three "touch and go landings" in the slough. This flying "Eagle" is considered a bush (not Busch) plane, able to take off and land in very short distances on rough terrain (even water!).

Our River Pictures on This Day in 2005 ...Friday.. Are a couple of my favorites !

They were sent in by Captain Darryll Weil, who hails out of the yacht Club of St. Louis in the cruiser  "After You".  Darryll has a good story about boating with his dad in the swimming pool at Blue Springs Lodge many years ago..

Let's Go Boating in The Pool !

Darryll wrote;

Growing up my dad always had a boat and we owned Blue Springs Pool in Fenton.  So, one day, probably over a few cold ones, my dad decided to put our boat in the pool.  With the help of my Uncle Buss and several of our regular customers, the motor was removed, fence taken down and the boat and motor carried into the pool where it was re-assembled!  If I recall correctly the boat was a 15' wood Delta with about a 40 horsepower Mercury.  This is the same boat I learned to drive in at Lake of the Ozarks.  Here's a couple of pics of the adventure.  In the starboard side pic I am the one standing in the pass through with my uncle driving.  In the port side pic my Dad is driving and I am the on the one in back with the paddle.

Enjoy, Darryll

Boating Safety Is A Key Ingredient To Memorial Day Fun------  Memorial Day weekend is considered by many boaters as the unofficial beginning of the boating season and a great opportunity to plan that first family outing of the year. With the large number of boaters that will be on our waterways this holiday weekend, safety must be a priority for all boaters. ...........click here to continue reading rest of the Missouri State Water Patrol News Release N07070033

Deer Stand Stolen ......

River Bill,

   Was wondering if you could pass this along..

  We have some thieves up on the river.  We hunt on the islands (Dardenne) and a friend of mine had his deer stands stolen.  We have an idea who it is, and have contacted our Water Patrol and conservation friends to see if they could make a note of it.. because of the trouble with them in the past, the ones suspected, said they claimed that part of the island we hunt, and no one else is going to move in,...but ..if you could pass this along and let our other hunting friends up there know, it would be appreciated...   Nothing is safe up on the islands ..

   Thanks for a great web site and have a great Memorial Weekend.....

1929 on the Mississippi River

Greg wrote in his letter;

Hello Bill,
   These are the pictures I have told you about. They were taken in the Summer of 1929.  The one on the beach (top) was taken right across from what is now the Duck Club, facing down towards Grafton.  You can see the bluffs in the distant background.  The second guy from the right (sitting down) is my grandfather, Earl Gruenenfelder.  It was his boat.

  The second picture(bottom), with the boat running, has my grandfather sitting up with my great-great grandmother towards the front, my great grandfather, Edmond Gruenefelder is in the middle wearing a hat, and my great grandmother in the rear.  It was taken in the little slough below the Duck Club.  They had a club house below North Shore from the late 20's that was eventually destroyed in the flood of '93.    I still have the anchor of this boat in my living room.

Hope you enjoy these,

Greg Jost
