Our River Pictures of the Day....... are from Joel.  He seen some strange looking boats on a trip to Minnesota and sent us some pictures..

Bill,

Hello, my name is Joel and these are pictures I took on my trip up to Iowa to look at a boat.

Happened to come across these and I thought you would like to see.

After talking to them they said they were from Minnesota and all were headed down to New Orleans.  There was a total of 4 boats but only saw 3.

Well here you go,  its a site to see and the last one is made out of a skate board half pipe.   I got a huge kick out of it along with the rest of my family that was with me.

Joel

RiverBill says...Thanks for the pictures Joel.

Lets watch for these boats as they pass through our area.

Update.... Premier 370 Business Park......... According to a news article in the Suburban Journal....the Federal Emergency Management Agency has sent the City of St. Peters a letter that puts a cloud over the future of Premier 370 Business Park.

The letter has halted work on the business park that is being developed in the Mississippi River flood plain off of Highway 370.

According to the news article,  the FEMA letter lists several matters related to the levee system that is designed to keep flood waters out of the business park.

  • The city still needs a letter of map revision from FEMA that moves the floodway boundary.

  • The city needs a signed letter of concurrence from Calhoun County, IL which is across the Mississippi River from the floodplain where the business park is located.  Calhoun County will reportedly not sign the letter because they had opposed the construction of the levee.

  • The city must also submit a new design for closing the gaps in an agricultural levee located below the railroad tracks.

According to a Cabela’s product manager, the company paid for replicas to be created by a taxidermist company in Duluth, Minnesota for Pruitt and other recipients, "but it would not pay to ship the replicas to their recipients."

Group Is Against National Heritage Area.....  A news article in Thursday's on-line St. Louis Post Dispatch described how a group residents from northeast St. Charles County is petitioning against the proposal of making a 200  square mile area around the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers into a National Heritage Area.     Some property owners are wary of the national designation and how it could affect "what they can do with their land".  Meanwhile proponents of the National Heritage Area proposal say the designation could draw national attention and federal money to the area.  It would also help promote the region's river heritage.

Missouri State Water Patrol ----- Blessing Of The Fleet

Patrolman Lou Amighetti, of the Missouri State Water Patrol, sent us the following information about the up-coming Blessing Of The Fleet Parade.  Please take a minute and read it.

To All Mississippi River Boaters,

It is Blessing of the Fleet time again. The Missouri State Water
Patrol wants to remind all spectators and participants of few common
violations to avoid.
1. Seating violations-Bow, gunwale, seatback and deck riding will not
be allowed.
2. Registration violations- Make sure that all documentations decals,
numbers and names are clearly visible. Registration that is not
visible is the same as not having any at all.
3. Littering- Make sure that decorations affixed to your vessel are
secure. Any decorations that fall into the water are considered litter.
4. Anchoring in a channel- Pick areas away from traffic. Think safety
when selecting a resting stop. It is illegal to obstruct or impede
the flow of traffic.
5. Alcohol consumption- Drink plenty of water to avoid becoming
dehydrated. Alcohol and boating can be a deadly combination. Be responsible
and designate a sober operator and also remind passengers to be
responsible with their alcohol consumption. As the operator/or owner of a
vessel you can be held responsible if something happens.

The Missouri State Water Patrol does monitor and responds to calls on
Ch 16 of the marine band. Please understand that we do not always hear
that channel because other channels are higher priority and our radios
are limited by distance. Sometimes officers will be near Alton when a
call from near Iowa Island comes out. The radios just do not receive
from that far of a distance. You can try to reach us on Ch16 but if we
do not respond, please contact Sector Upper and they will contact us.
Our phone number is 573-751-3333 or 911 for emergencies.

Ultimately, the Missouri State Water Patrol wants the Blessing of the
Fleet to be a continued success. Remember that safety should be your number one priority.

Pictures from the Stateamind Poker Run....... The RiverBill's Team  1st stop on last Saturday's poker run was   Cedar Hill Resort ....located on the Mighty Mississippi River, just "One Mile Below Winfield Dam".

We were a little early Saturday morning, so we sat down at the outside sundeck bar, ordered up a few cold beverages and visited with Kylee, the bar tender.  It was a fine morning...clear skies, a gentle breeze, good friends, a good view and we were on the river.  After a very short time the poker dealers  arrived and started setting up.

While they were setting up, the girls on our team discussed their card strategies and made a few personal bets on "the best hand in our boat".  You could feel the excitement  growing in anticipation of getting the first cards of the day.

There was a pretty good crowd there already and restaurant workers were busy serving up food and drinks for everyone.    The band soon arrived and set up on the stage in the old cruiser along side of the deck.....The music started flowing too.   What a fine day it was....Life was good !

We got our 1st cards, found out who had the high hand so far, debated possibilities of winning, posed for a picture with 3 of Cedar Hill's finest (above), snapped a few pictures of the other guests, hopped in the boat and were on our way to stop #2.

Thanks Kylee, Brittany and Liz for serving up the cold river drinks and taking care of us while we were there !

The Trolling Motor From Hell -----

Another great boating story from our good friend Rick Sievers..

The trolling motor from hell

Dave Albert and I are old friends and have had a great many adventures together. The trouble is it seems when we light out on one of these things there is some powerful deity somewhere that looks down on us and says to his companions "Hey, watch this" Such was the case when Dave called me and proudly proclaimed he had gotten a deal on a nice Bass boat and trailer, and enticed me to come down to Georgia for a delightful weekend of boating and fishing. Before long I was at his house and we wasted little time heading off to some unknown northern Georgia lake with the boat in tow. It was a sleek bass boat with an ample Mercury outboard and a formidable looking trolling motor attached to the transom. The day was beautiful with an abundance of sunshine and clean crisp air and a perfect temperature, the kind of day that makes a person euphoric to be off work and enjoying recreational activities. We arrived at the launching ramp and I have to say, the place was a verdant park. The grass was neatly manicured and deep green, and everything had a clean ordered look to it. It was the kind of place one could envision straw-hatted gentlemen of distinction strolling with elegant southern belles carrying parasols. In short order, we had the boat in the water and the big Merc had us skimming effortlessly across the clear blue lake towards the promise of stringers filled to capacity with fish. After a short while though, in an effort to find a likely looking place to ply the water with our assortment of tackle, we got back into a stump filled swamp area that looked good for fishing, but also had a foreboding appearance as well, none the less, we ventured in. The outboard was put to rest and the trolling motor was employed to take us back into this likely looking fish habitat. It was not too long before I found out that the trolling motor had an intermittent electrical problem in it that would cause it to quit once in a while. However, a right smart whump with a hand or foot seemed to effectively remedy the situation for a while, so we got further and further back into this area that started looking more and more like one of those Louisiana swamps you see in the movies where you can envision malevolent eyes opening in the underbrush, daring you to get too close to the shore. It's likely ol' Sasquatch himself would quake in his furry boots here. We weren't having any luck catching fish so far, but we were starting to get some bites... mosquito bites, and they didn't hesitate to call for their kinfolk to come for supper. Meanwhile, as we got further entrenched in this wilderness, the trolling motor decided to get more and more cantankerous, requiring more frequent and decidedly more authoritative whacks to get its innards whirling again. After what seemed like forever and a day in there, the mosquitoes and other assorted insects now had large patches of our exposed skin looking like some of the better winning targets at an American Legion turkey shoot, and our blood levels low enough to make a Red Cross nurse gasp and hit the "code blue" button. The combination of no fish, insect assaults and the obstinate trolling motor had taken its toll on our dispositions. Dave had slowly converted from giving the trolling motor a friendly smack, to actively searching for a nice solid cudgel with which to beat its shiny plastic skull in. In an effort to be positive, I remarked; "Gee this is fun, I'm glad I came all the way to Georgia for this" The rather acidic reply I got was something like; " Why don't you button your pie-eating hole and see if there's some fish off the front of the boat. I figured I better do it, Dave's twice my size and as strong as any three men in Georgia, but by now, I'm sure that any water breathing creatures in the area had surely had enough of our drumming and by now had escaped to another zip code. The day was waning and we decided we'd had enough of this good clean fun for the day and headed out of the swamp and back towards open water. We were a long way in, and with the trolling motor being incredibly recalcitrant, I started paddling while Dave clobbered the trolling motor. To someone on the shore it probably would have looked like a one-slave galley with Dave beating a cadence for me to row by. Once we finally got out of the stumps and such, we could once again use the big motor. We didn't have much to say as we headed back to the launching ramp, probably because our hemoglobin was so low we were too tired to talk. When we got back to the ramp, I got out to back the trailer down the ramp while Dave prepared the boat. A nice young couple and their small son were nearby enjoying the beauty of the park. They had that fresh scrubbed, Mr. and Mrs. Nice Next Door Neighbor look to them, and their young son looked as innocent as Mary's little lamb. They decided to watch us load up the boat and stood nearby. Unfortunately, as Dave leaned over the transom and started pulling the trolling motor up, it decided now would be a good time to take its vengeance and started working like the day it came out of the factory. The prop was aimed right at his nose and plastered him dead in the face with water, mud, sand, little bits of snail shells, etc... He dropped the motor and launched into a string of cuss verbiage generally reserved for salty sailors of the high seas with 30 years or more tenure. The now horrified parents quickly clasped their hands over the poor lad's ears and swiftly whisked him away in a huff, lest he be scarred for life, no doubt. There was nothing I could do but stand there with one leg up in the air to keep from peeing down my leg as my lungs tried in vain to suck in some air for laughter. I probably looked like some impossible flamingo with my red, insect riddled flesh as Dave searched for something with which to clear his encrusted eyes as the boat slowly turned a backwards circle near the ramp. Finally, we did get the boat loaded up and headed back home looking like a pair of derelicts, The day sure didn't end like it had started.
Later that summer while talking to Dave I learned someone made him an offer on the boat and he took it. I can't imagine why? but he didn't sound disappointed. I guess that supports the old saying that the two happiest days in the life of a boat owner are The day he buys it, and the day he sells it.

Our River Pictures of the Day------  are from the Stateamind Water Sports and Lake Center Marina's poker run this past weekend.

We decided to give it a shot and join in the fun of a poker run.  Our boat started out at Two Branch Marina with a crew of 6 and our first destination was Cedar Hill Resort.  We headed up-river a few miles, docked and went to the sundeck for a little socializing and our first card of the day.  Then we powered down the main channel to Kinder's Restaurant for our second card.  After that we headed further down river for the scenic ride along the Great River Road and the bluffs to Longshot Saloon in Portage Des Sioux for our 3rd.  Headed back up-river and the Dardenne Slough to  Capt'n Jack's Bar and Grill for our fourth card.

On the way out of Capt'n Jacks harbor and heading towards the finish line we stopped for water rescue.   Some fellow poker run boaters hit the dike just below Sharky's Floating Restaurant.    They managed to get off the dike themselves,  we threw them a rope and towed them into Capt'n Jack's harbor.  After tying up the boat and getting everything secured they decided to finish out the poker run with us....... That's the spirit !

So..... off to Lake Center Marina we went for some food, music, cold drinks, awards and a little river socializing with friends........  What a good river day !

Look for lots of pictures from the poker run in tomorrow's edition.

Bill

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service News Release

Silver and Largescale Silver Carp Importation and Transport Banned

The News Release, dated July 10, 2007, is as follows:

" Importation and interstate transport of live silver and largescale silver carp will be banned under a final rule published in today's Federal Register by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A petition to the Service signed by 25 Members of Congress outlined the impacts of silver carp to humans and native aquatic species in waters of the United States. The final rule--advanced under the injurious wildlife provisions of the Lacey Act--addresses these concerns and will become effective on August 9, 2007.

"Slowing the spread of these carp is necessary to protect our native aquatic species," said H. Dale Hall, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "Although silver carp are established in parts of the Mississippi watershed, we will work to keep their impacts minimized and prevent additional populations from taking hold....................."

According to the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Security website:

"The Coast Guard has a three-tiered system of Maritime Security (MARSEC) levels consistent with the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Advisory System (HSAS). MARSEC Levels are designed to provide a means to easily communicate pre-planned scalable responses to increased threat levels. The Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard sets MARSEC levels commensurate with the HSAS. Because of the unique nature of the maritime industry, the HSAS threat conditions and MARSEC levels will align closely, though they will not directly correlate."

July 13, 1832 in River History.
The source of Mississippi River was discovered by Henry R. Schoolcraft, an American geographer, geologist, and ethnologist also noted for his early studies of Native American cultures.

Between Nov 1818 and Feb 1819, Schoolcraft and  Levi Pettibone made an expedition from Potosi, Mo to what is now Springfield, Mo, then into Arkansas surveying the geography, geology, and mineralogy of the area.   He later published a book identifying the potential of lead deposits in the area.

Schoolcraft' explorations and publications got the attention of the Secretary of War, John C. Calhoun*, who recommended him for an expedition headed by Michigan Territorial Governor, Lewis Cass, to explore the wilderness of Lake Superior and the lands west to the Mississippi River.

In 1820, the Cass expedition started from Detroit and traveled  along Lake Huron and Lake Superior, west to the Mississippi River, then down the river to what is now Iowa.  They "incorrectly" concluded that the Mississippi River's  headwaters were in Cass Lake.

On another journey in 1832 Schoolcraft discovered the true headwaters of the Mississippi River........ Lake Itasca

*Note: Calhoun County, Illinois, the home of Kinder's Restaurant and Cedar Hill Resort, was named after John C. Calhoun.

Raising River Water Levels on Missouri River is Killing Protected Birds ......  According to a news article in yesterday's on-line St. Louis Post Dispatch the Army Corps of Engineers is raising the water levels on Missouri River to allow a single towboat to go up river.  During the process hundreds of chicks and eggs of the piping plovers and least terns could perish from the rising water. Least terns are classified by the federal government as "endangered".  The piping plovers are classified as "threatened."

The towboat is going up river to retrieve four barge loads of alfalfa pellets in Blair, Neb.

Heartland Boating Magazine........The July of Heartland Boating is out....... Lots of stuff about St. Louis.  Ma Belle and Grafton Harbor.

Just so happens that we featured Grafton Harbor one year ago today on RiverBills as pic of the day......and  we have lots about Ma Belle too.

~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~

Check out page 8...It has a story on it named

 "Save The Ma Belle"

featuring a picture from RiverBills.com that was created by Pat Reid of Crystal Photography.

Our very own Tom Lenkman, who has a place on Dardenne Slough and cruises around in a restored 1953  42' Chris-Craft named "WILLPOWER", contacted the folks at Heartland Magazine at this year's St. Louis Boat Show and managed to get their interest to write the article.

Congrats Tom !

It's an interesting story.  Tells about Joe Stark, the original owner, how he modeled the Ma Bell after the Admiral and that it has a hull made of a nickel-copper alloy called monel.

Morris Crout even got an honorable mention.  He is the guy that owned Ma Bell for a while and had it at South Shore Harbor.  Rick Sievers wrote the great story about him and leaving the harbor on day.

Pick up the magazine and check it out !

If you want to read more about Ma Belle...go to RiverBill's Ma Belle page.

Grafton Harbor

The July issue of Heartland Boating also has an article about our very own Grafton Harbor, featuring a picture of the floating Harbor Office building and a shot of Jan and Joe DeSherlia standing on the breakwater.

It's a good article and description of the harbor....check it out.

Fourth of July on the River

Went up to the river on Wednesday and took the boat down to Grafton Harbor in Grafton Illinois where we had reserved a slip for the night to watch the fireworks. Spent the afternoon walking around Grafton and then had a fireworks / dock party at Grafton until about 2 AM! Thursday we returned to our marina and just chilled out. Friday Maureen wanted to get in some wheel time so we took the boat out all day and just enjoyed the great weather while stopping off at several places along the way. Headed home on Saturday to rest up for the ball game on Sunday. Check out the pics on my website by clicking on the "Newest Stuff" or "Boating" links.

Docks Are A Valuable Commodity  ------

Bill:

In the Wall Street Journal, I ran across an article about how, in certain parts of the country, docks are a very valuable commodity.

People actually buy homes (and lots) just to have the dock or dock
permit. And the value of those properties is enhanced considerably by a  dock. Who knew?
