from the boat "Gin Bucket II" sent me some pictures of Tip's latest

town, we did sort of an impromptu "Get
Your Picture Taken With Tip" at Sharky's
Cove. Because some people questioned all the hoopla surrounding
Tip's visits from Florida, Doug and some friends had T-Shirts made saying
"It's All About Tip" and surprised Tipper with them while anchored
in Two Branch. Here's a couple of pictures of the occasion from Captain
Gin Bucket, I mean Doug. Enjoy, Darryll

The facility will have 300 slips and be protected by a floating breakwater. The docks will have concrete walkways and there will be docks available for transient boaters. Look for a pool, hot tub, bait shop, mechanical service, private luxury bathroom suites, convenience store, ship's store and more. As you know, Grafton has always been a difficult place for the boaters to visit because of the almost non-existent docking facilities. This new harbor will change that and it will open up the city of Grafton to the boaters of Alton Lake. There are all kinds of wineries, restaurants and shops within easy walking distance of the new harbor. Its going to be great ! For more information call ( 618) 786 - 7678 or go to www.graftonharbor.net
There was plenty of fried fish and beverages for everyone after the ceremonies were over. I got to talk to Joe DeSherlia for a bit about the new marina and I thanked him for opening up the City of Grafton to us boaters. I also got to meet Carl Seidler from Godfrey. IL. Carl is an avid boater, who grew up on the river near Winfield Dam, just below present day location of Cedar Hill Restaurant. You might spot Carl in the "family section" of Mason Chute or on Iowa Island. Stop and say hello.

Hi Bill,
"The Great River Road (Highway 100) crosses the Illinois River at Hardin. Linking Calhoun and Greene Counties is the vertical lift Joe Page Bridge. Its lift span, 308 feet 9 inches long, is the largest span of this type in the world. A vertical lift bridge uses a system of counterweights and cables to raise an inner section. This section remains horizontal as it is raised upward, allowing river traffic to pass beneath the bridge. The lift is operated by by two 50-horsepower motors and is equipped with a gasoline engine in case of emergency. Approximately five million pounds of steel and 9,000 cubic yards of concrete were used in its construction. At 1,728 feet in length it is the longest bridge in Illinois."

Bill,
Returning to Grafton Harbor from the 3rd chute Sunday with my friends Billy Moyer. Sharon Skaggs, Pete Zimmer, his side kick Sophie and my wife Patty we encountered this tank landing ship that was going up the Illinois River.
Larry sent us the following from the Wikipedia Encyclopedia
"The tank landing ship (LST, for "Landing Ship, Tank") was created during World War II to support amphibious operations by carrying significant quantities of vehicles, cargo, and landing troops directly onto an unimproved shore. More than a thousand of these ships were laid down in the United States during WWII. Eighty were built in the UK and Canada to a modified design and known as LST (3)."

2006 Jamaica Daze Party
The weather was good on Friday, when we were setting up...Thanks everyone ! Then the storm came through that evening. The wind, the rain and lighting....boats broke loose, decorations came down and some boats were damaged....it got real intense for a while, but we survived ! Saturday was a perfect day. Started out a little cloudy, but then the sun came out and the party goers started arriving. The cooks started cooking chicken and corn on the cob early and didn't stop until late in the afternoon. It was sea of boats...boats everywhere ! One of the big events was a Jamaica Daze wedding...Sue Schneider and Chuck Beach tied the knot ! Congrats Chuck and Sue. We had contests and gave away prizes from our sponsors all day long. As the daylight faded into evening....the band Rail started the playing rock and roll, followed up by the band named Stripper Named Phoebe.
A Big Mississippi River Thanks to everyone that made the 2006 party possible ! ~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~ |

Subject: Junk Boats Just wanted to let everyone know that the junk boats that Pat Riley was talking about a while back are located about one mile north of Two Rivers Marina at mile marker 285.5. The authorities up here are keeping a close eye on them and I will try to update when they lock through at Clarksville. They are headed south to New Orleans is the story so we will all have to keep each other updated on their where abouts. Just wanted to let everyone know. Pat and I worked together a couple of Friday's ago to find the exact location of the American Queen as she churned her way down the Mississippi River towards St. Louis. Not a real easy job ! After some internet checks and lots of phone calls Pat was on his way, camera in hand, to snap a shot of the Queen.
Here is his story.
Bill, Finally found one that we thought would be good, couple of people were camping and fishing there and asked if they had seen the Am Queen yet, they indicated no, so I set up camera and tripod and waited, by this time it was about 7:00 pm. The sun was starting to drop fast and it was muggy and hazy. Finally you could see the stacks in the distance, so we waited. These are the best we could do for the conditions. Decided to go to Winfield Dam and try to get some pics while American Queen was locking thru but was ran off because they locked gates about 8:30.
Hope you enjoy.
RiverBill says...Great pictures Pat.
Sounds like you had quite an adventure on this photoshoot. THANKS ! |

Pat sent us this picture of the American Queen heading down river towards Ol' St.Lou. He made it look Old Tyme ! Pat raced around last weekend from location to location in his land yacht tying to find the Queen on the river. We knew it was close, but didn't know the exact location. We talked to the folks at Two Rivers Marina and a lot of the lock masters trying to find her. Pat missed it once or twice and had to leave lock and dam 25 when they locked the grounds for the night. He got some good shots for us though !

Received the following e-mail from Gayle LaMarr Hi Bill,
RiverBill's sent it on to Mike Halley, who was at the scene and helped in the rescue......Mike replied with the following e-mail
Bill,
They were running their own generator. Their gen set discharged out toward the houseboat. The houseboat's generator discharged out the other side where no one was tied up and the discharge for the houseboat is set up to go through a pipe going to the top of the houseboat. No matter which side of the houseboat someone would tie up, there's no way the houseboat would be emitting fumes toward anyone. The houseboat was not responsible in any way.
Hope this helps. Mike |

Bill,
Please post the following link on your web site: It is a great source of information regarding carbon monoxide and boating. For the protection of all of our families and friends in the boating community, it is time for every boater out there to step up and get educated on the risks of carbon monoxide while boating and how carbon monoxide exposure incidents can be prevented. Due to the significant differences in emissions control systems, the reality is that a person can be exposed to higher concentrations of carbon monoxide while standing on the swim platform of a single engine ski boat than sticking their face directly in the exhaust pipe of just about any 2005 or newer passenger vehicle. Add up the engines and generators of boats moored in a tight group and you can have a real problem.
~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~ RiverBill wrote Randy the following e-mail: Randy,
Bill,
I work as a forensic engineer and I typically investigate vehicular and boating accidents, fires, and explosions in an attempt to determine the cause(s) and contributing factors. Unfortunately, I also investigate a number of carbon monoxide exposure cases involving recreational boats and homes with gas-fired furnaces. I have studied the various sources of carbon monoxide in boats, how carbon monoxide migrates within boats, and from boat-to-boat. I am also familiar with most of the carbon monoxide detection and control devices available on the market today, including sensors that will shut down the generator or engine if carbon monoxide is detected. |
More info. The houseboat tied to the victims was RV & Jean Vogler and some friends of theirs along with their dog
"Winston" who also alerted help by barking. Their boat was "We Did It Again". You just ran a story about them & their dog Winston. The victims of the C.O. gas were Richard & Lynn Reichert in the boat "Mary Lynn". The carbon monoxide detectors were not active. Please make sure to mention "Murphy" who also was a great help in the rescue. Mike
The 36th annual Bud Light Gran Prix Boat Races were held at Creve Coeur Lake this past weekend. Maureen and I again worked the VIP tents area delivering food and beverage for the Concord Village Lions Club. It was definitely a hot weekend, typical August in St. Louis. This year the course again had a right hand turn making the racing that much more exciting, these boats are like NASCAR racers, normally they only turn left and are set up accordingly. Of the few accidents this year one involved hometown favorite Mike Seebold who barrel rolled and destroyed his boat in the final and one boat that barrel rolled almost onto shore in front of our VIP tents. We were dropping off an order when I heard the impact and saw the boat coming towards the tents. Old habits die hard, haven't worked rescue on the water in several years, but I immediately dropped the order and ran to the scene. Got there and saw the boat was upright and the driver was moving in the cockpit, no debris hit any of our customers. Rescue boats arrived and everybody was OK. Take a look at the pictures of the operation to get the boat out of the water through one of our tents! While I was gone one of the workers told Maureen, "They just can't get it out of their blood, can they?" Tim Seebold won the final amid controversy when the 1st and 2nd place boats were penalized a lap each. Read the Post-Dispatch article here for more information.
Bill,
Here are several pictures that Karen took today, Sunday, at 2 Branch on the upper sandbar of a rescue we were part of today. We spent the day Saturday with friends, and stayed the night. A few other boats were also at that end of the chute. Since it rained pretty hard late Saturday afternoon,everyone feared more rain over night and left eisenglass zipped tight. Sunday morning there were screams coming from the boat "Mary Lynn" that hails out of Woodland Marina. Lynn had somehow made her way out of the cabin & up to the cockpit to get help. Lynn couldn't walk due to muscle cramps at the time. The "Mary Lynn" had filled with deadly carbon monoxide due to the generator discharge pointing to the houseboat they were tied up to. Right away the guy in the houseboat called on the radio for the Coast Guard and we headed over to see if we could help. We had a nurse along with us, Lisa
Dattilow, and her assistance was a big factor in the rescue. I helped my friend "Rick
Pelton" bring Richard from the "Mary Lynn" up out of the cabin of their Sea Ray. Richard was completely overcome from the carbon monoxide and didn't look like he'd make it. We put both Richard and his wife Lynn on the seats in back of the boat, pulled off all the
eisenglass, iced down both victims, got fans going and kept them awake and kept talking to them. Richard was barely showing signs of staying with us but held on as we spoke to comfort him and his wife. We stayed in contact with the Coast Guard by radio and cell phone until rescue units arrived. 3 paramedics came over on a civilian boat they commandered out of 2 Branch Marina, "Short & Sweet". The owner was more than happy to bring them out. The paramedics administered oxygen right away, called for "Arch" helicopter service and got 2 choppers to land on the island where we carried the 2 victims and placed them in the choppers. Several more paramedics arrived with the St. Charles Fire Department in their boat and Lou Amighetti also came by to assist. The paramedics said if we all hadn't been there to help the two most likely would not have survived. We heard from Jean later today (the houseboat) that both victims were okay after having come out of the decompression chamber at the hospital. That was great news. Sorry, with all the excitement I didn't get all the names of the occupants in the boats or all the boat names. Maybe you can check it out. When I see Richard and Lynn out on the water I'll definitely stop by to see how they are so they can meet me in a much different setting. Mike Halley |
