FYI...

State Lines At The Confluence And At Iowa & Enterprise Islands ------

We showed a map in the weekend edition of the state boundary lines at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers.  According to MapQuest, they run through the first chute where the Illinois River flows into the Mississippi River.  That means the "Third Chute" or "Mason Chute" is located in Missouri !  See map above.

More FYI....

I got a lot of e-mails about the weekend map so I thought I would expanded it to show Iowa Island and Enterprise Island too. The state line runs on the eastern side of these islands putting them in Calhoun County and the great state of the state of Illinois !

River Pictures Of The Day

Our River Picture and e-mail of the Day .......  is from from my friend, "The Eagle Hater"  Larry Demko.  You remember him...he put a stop to all the eagle pictures we were posting on RiverBill's....Ha !

Bill:

We recently vacationed in Gulf Shores, AL and the surrounding area. Beautiful blue-green water, white sand...I could take only so much of those tropical -like surroundings so we had to come back to Pool 26!

While there, we took a ferry to Dauphine Island and I realized this is where you'll be banished if you start putting up all those bird pictures again! It's the world's "birdiest" coastal town. Surprisingly, they didn't know who you were...yet.

While having lunch on Dauphine Island, hereafter known as The-Future-Home-of RiverBill, I saw a sculpture on the wall of the restaurant and thought it might be just the thing for the bow of your Baja!

On the return ferry ride, I had a thought...and I don't get one very often. Perhaps, this winter, you should sponsor The RiverBill 1st Annual Eagle Watch.

It will be ONE DAY (and ONLY one day) of eagle watching and picture taking...maybe in Grafton. Then, the next day, you can fill the site with Eagle pics. You know, get it out of your system in one fell, swoop!

Whaddaya think?

Keep in mind: there's an island with your name on it!

Minutes From The Log Book of The PYC
Third Annual Pirate Day Meeting
15 September, 2007

They drifted towards the sailboat docks in groups small and large,
With black costumes and decorations for their ship or barge.

Black Flags, eye patches, and carrying swords,
And, although not obvious, plank walking boards
!

Sails were uncovered, and sheeted around winches.

Water balloons were filled, and stowed by lovely wenches.

Commodore Berry gave instructions and some questionable illusions

That stirred up enthusiasm, and a big dose of confusion,

Some dozen pirate ships disembarked from PYC,

And set sail for plunder upon the great Mississippi.

Hardly known for warfare, and usually serene,

The churning waters supported a more sinister scene!

Powder monkeys brought ammo by trash bag and by pail,

And soon the watery missiles began to assail.

Boarding parties that day did align the rails.

As skippers maneuvered to pluck nautical tails.

With boat hooks jousting, Gretchen and Lin bravely fought,

But buckets of cold water was all that was bought.

Ship after gyrating ship joined in the merry mêlée,

But in truth, some captains did scurry away.

The mayor called out Horning’s Boy Scout militia,

To restore order and subdue the piratical inertia.

But a nimble and quick Captain Black Beard Jerry,

Disabled the frigate Seagull and all she did carry!

The corsair Gander made off with two innocent lasses,

And plied them with rum and pleasurable mock lashes.

The governor’s Water Patrol monitored from a safe distance,

But was out gunned, and retreated for more formidable assistance.

With fair winds holding, the plundering continued on,

Around the Elsa Bar, and a little beyond.

The battles raged until the balloons were all shot.

Zigging and zagging, they were a fearful lot.

Making for a safe harbour, they docked for a rest,

And to display ribbons captured during the challenging test.

Though most shared a bounty of fish, rum, and meat,

Bonuses went to those who stood out from the fleet.

For their devotion to security and associated pirate threads,

Bloody Bruce and Donna were presented wine in hogs heads

For their deft seamanship, and gallant tail catchen’

Cheers went out to Calico Matt and first mate Gretchen.

And for their beautiful boat (and some culinary halos),

Debbie and Tyler won for their…um… ground potatoes

Senate Passed Water Resources Development Act....

According to a news article in the on-line Post Dispatch......The US Senate passed the Water Resources Development Act this week which provides the go-ahead for the locks projects on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. Even though President Bush has threatened to veto the bill, an override is possible and probable.

This bill authorizes the construction of five new 1,200-foot locks on the Mississippi River, from the lock at Dam 25 near Winfield, Mo to the lock at Dam 20 near Canton, Mo. Two locks on the Illinois River will also be replaced....one at Peoria and one at LaGrange.

The environmental restoration part of the bill includes such things as rebuilding islands and side channels on the river that have been destroyed over the years by navigation.

Hundreds of acres of land along the riverfront in East St. Louis will also be restored.

Con Trios Yacht Club Update...... We received the following e-mail from Capt'n Darryll...... webmaster for Con Trios Yacht Club.

Just a quick reminder of the next Con Trios Yacht Club social event. This is the Fall Color Cruise aboard the cruise ship "Spirit of LaSalle" (formerly known as the "Grampa Woo"). This will take place on Saturday, October 20th. We are planning on departing from and returning to the Yacht Club of St. Louis this year. Last year's event was a great time in spite of less than ideal weather. Similar to the Moonlight Cruise, which sold out quickly, capacity is limited, so when you receive your reservation forms in the mail, return them as soon as you can to guarantee your boarding passes on this fun cruise up and down the river enjoying the changing colors, a great meal and fun times with friends.

Reservation forms will be available on the website after they are mailed to members.

Check out www.contriosyachtclub.org for more information and pictures of last year's cruise.

Fall Colors Predictions......Missouri Department of Conservation foresters update "Fall Color" reports weekly from mid-September through early-November.

According to the MDC website this has been a tough year for trees and will likely be reflected in the fall colors we see.  A January ice storm, an April freeze and summer drought conditions will mean patchy color across the state.

Three Chevrons  Being Constructed Between the Chain of Rocks Canal and the Poplar Street Bridge. ...

According to a news article in this week's Waterways Journal the US Army Corps Of Engineers have started the construction of 3 arch shaped chevrons in the Mississippi River between the Chain of Rocks Canal and the Poplar Street Bridge. They should finish the northern most one next week.

The chevrons are said to decrease the cost of dredging, improve river navigation and give the fish a place to "hang out" during the winter months. The limestone used to construct the chevrons is shipped up-river on from St.Genevieve, Mo.

Hey,

The fish were flying Saturday & Sunday. We unfortunately had
one land in our pontoon on Saturday evening. I threw a towel on it and one of our quick thinking passengers wrestled it and got it off the boat quickly.
It was quite an excitement, with the screaming women and the guys laughing.

The River Picture and e-mail on the Day In 2005 ---Saturday--  was sent in by Captain Darryll Weil.  It's a picture of the 2nd tug for the Grafton Ferry, Bluewater, in dry dock.

Darryll wrote:

"Went up to the River to do some work on my boat.  While at Sharky's Cove ran into Pete Tully from Polestar Marina who told me he was having extensive work done on the second tug for the Grafton Ferry.  After lunch I went over to see how the work was progressing and took some pictures of it while it's in drydock.  Judging by the amount of work going on it is obvious Pete is making it as reliable as possible as he told me they carry about 9700 cars a month now.  As far as I know the Grafton Ferry is the only ferry that actually crosses two rivers, the Mississippi and the Illinois, on each trip. 370 Business Park Update.... According to a news article in the St. Charles County Journal........  St. Peters City Officials say they are still working with Federal Emergency Management Agency on working out the problems with the Premier 370 Business Park.  The business park is being built in the floodplain of Mississippi River just north of I-70 and Highway 370.

Construction on the business park has been halted because of unresolved issues between the city of St. Peters and  FEMA.  The issue is with the city's' request for a " letter of map revision" that moves the floodway boundary 1,550 feet closer to the Mississippi River.  The city says that  the original boundary was incorrect . The new floodway boundary would allow any future tenants of the business park eligible for federally subsidized flood insurance.

Judge Orders Work to Stop on New Madrid Floodway Project..... According to a news article in the on-line St. Louis Post Dispatch.......  A U.S. District Court Judge has ordered the  Army Corps of Engineers to stop construction on the New Madrid Floodway Project in the Missouri Bootheel and dismantle the work that is already completed.

The Judge ruled in favor of the environmental groups case against the project that would close a 1,500 foot gap in the Mississippi River levee and include a system of gates to control the flow of water between the floodplain and the Mississippi River.

The environmental groups contend that the project would cut-off the last major piece of connected floodplain habitat in Missouri from the Mississippi River. The floodplain provides habitat for migrating birds and fish reproduction.

More On America's Wetlands .....   According to a news article on the DesMoines Register we all have a stake in preserving and re-building the Louisiana wetlands. Everyone from farmers, to tradesman, to those who pay electricity bills or buy gas depends on the wetlands in Louisiana.

The America's WETLAND Foundation, Louisiana officials and Women of the Storm visited Dubuque, Iowa to brief  leaders on the efforts to save the wetlands and explain how loss of the Louisiana wetlands impacts the economy in Iowa and the world ecology.

Levees along the Mississippi River currently stop the flow of nutrients and sediments into the river that would be deposited in the delta area of Louisiana.   These nutrients and sediments would make up for the rapid coastal erosion that is taking place.   An ever growing " dead zone" has appeared in the Gulf of Mexico because of agricultural, chemical, and industrial runoff flowing down the river.  The levees also separate this toxic runoff from the wetlands along the Mississippi River that could diffuse it.

The state of Louisiana has worked with scientists and experts across the United States to develop a plan to restore the Mississippi River's natural sediment deposits to replenish America's wetlands.

Hydro Electricity At Dams in Quincy, Saberton, and Canton.... According to a news article on KHQA7on-line....The river-city of Quincy, IL reviewed preliminary plans this week for hydro-electric plants located at the dams at Quincy, Saberton, and Canton on the Mississippi River.   Each dam would have one turbine each and could be in place by 2016..

The power generated by the hydro-electric plants would be a "supplement" to existing sources.

The Women of the Storm....  According to an news article, dated 7 Sept, 2007,  on KWWK.com   ...... changes in the wetlands of the Mississippi River are the cause of many problems in the south. It is said that the water surge from Katrina could have been reduced if natural wetlands in the Mississippi River delta were still in place.

A group of conservationists, called "The Women of the Storm" are touring the country to raise awareness about the importance of river conservation.  They are hoping that national awareness of the Mississippi River will help prevent future damage like that of Hurricane Katrina.

People in Iowa can expect more speeches at the Mississippi River Museum research center in Dubuque, Iowa when it opens.  The center will do research on our wetlands to make sure that the entire Mississippi River stays healthy.  They also teach people about the impact that the river has on America.

The Women of the Storm and the America's Wetland campaign hope to make the wetlands a key issue in the upcoming presidential race.

The 1993 Flood and Our Snakes ....... Yesterday's on-line Post  Dispatch has a news article about the 1993 flood and the effect it had on snakes in its path.  According to the article....some snakes got washed away to higher ground and some got washed away to oblivion.

Professor Owen Sexton found that the 1993 flood killed or displaced about  70% of five species of snakes normally found at the Marais Temps Clair Nature Preserve in St. Charles County.  Oddly enough, the snakes that could swim were the hardest hit, while snakes that could survive in the trees had a better survival rate.

Update on 370 Business Park ......... The on-line St. Louis Post Dispatch had an news article in Friday's edition about the 370 Premier Business Park.

The park was built in the Mississippi River flood plain with much criticism by environmental groups and the Federal Emergency Management Agency is no longer considering the City of St Peter's request to revise the flood maps to show the Mississippi River floodway away from the earthen levee that protects the business park.  ( A floodway is the area covered with moving water during a flood.)

As a result, the city can not buy flood insurance at the park and there can be no construction unless the building site is raised above the "100 year flood level."

Saturday's Great Forest Park Balloon Race.... Capt'n Darryll Weil, who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis sent us an e-mail and great picture of Saturday's Great Forest Park Balloon Race.....Wow !

It's not the river, but it's such a good picture it got a spot in today's edition.

Bill,

Updated my website, www.captainweil.com with a bunch of pictures from Saturday's Great Forest Park Balloon Race (http://www.greatforestparkballoonrace.com). Our friends, George and Nancy, went with us this year. This was probably the best one yet in the 35 years of the race. Weather could not have been more perfect. With temps near 70, light and variable winds, the balloons stayed in the immediate area of the launch field as each flight took off. When the last balloon lifted off the "Hare" balloon, the Energizer Bunny, was still in sight. In fact it only made it 2 miles before setting down. Had several neat connections at this year's race. My old schoolmate, Roy Caton, was piloting the United Van Lines truck balloon and Nancy works for Uni Group that runs United Van Lines! Roy's brother and sort of my ex brother-in-law, Tom Caton, was piloting the Daniel and Henry balloon which is where Maureen's sister works as an underwriter. I have both flown with Tom and crewed at the race. The pilot in the Mayflower balloon, the eventual winner and also owned by Uni Group, was from North Carolina where my daughter and her family live. Here is a link to the article in the Post Dispatch about the race: Click here

You can go to my website and click on the "Newest Stuff" or "Other Stuff" links or use the link below to go directly to the pictures.

Delta Queen Riverboat to Retire in 2008....... According to a news article in Frommer's dated 8 August 2007........  the riverboat Delta Queen, built in 1927, has operated since 1966 under a special Congressional exclusion from Coast Guard fire-safety standards.

The problem is her wooden superstructure is banned by the powers that be, who fear fire on the high seas.  The Delta Queen does not sail on the high seas, but instead stays very close land at all times while cruising America's rivers.  Lawmakers have granted her six previous extensions, but this time the U.S. Congress decided not to extend Delta Queen's exemption before it broke for its recess in August 2007.

2008 will be the Delta Queen's final year as an overnight vessel.

Our River Pictures and e-mail of the Day .....Saturday....  from Labor Day Weekend were sent in by Andy Schmitz....

Dear Bill,

We haven't spoke in a while. Thanks again for your assistance in selling my 1996 Bayliner. The new owner is enjoying it thoroughly and I now have a new boat - A 2003 Sea Fox (looks like a MO State Water Patrol boat) You wouldn't believe the dirty looks I get.

I though you might find these pictures interesting. We took these pictures a few weeks ago during the short flood over Labor Day weekend. It seemed like the river was ours. We sure had fun...

The first picture 009 was taken off the sandbar at Enterprise Island on Sept 3, 2009 (as were all the attached pictures) You can see the water was a bit murky, but that didn't hinder the fun. The boys are pictured front to rear: Joe Carley, Drew Schmitz, Spencer Pellant and David Carley. These guys are the epitome of boy. They spent at least 2 hours riding logs down the river. I can say for sure they had a great time, but only they would understand. Of course, they were wearing PFDs at all times.

Picture 025 was taken off our dock, just down-river from Kinder's. Spencer and I were perfecting our back flips. Spenser moved on with life. I still haven't recovered.

Picture 038 is my son Drew Schmitz jumping off the side of our new Sea Fox. Drew has been on the river since he was 3 days old; A true RiverRat.

Finally, 049 was taken from our dock looking up towards Kinder's. It doesn't get any better!

Again, thank you for the great web site. Take care!

Andy Schmitz

Our River Pictures and e-mail of the Day .....Friday....  were sent in by Tauni Shuck

Bill,

I had to send these photos, they are from my cell phone.

Thursday evening I was coming thru the U dykes behind Iowa island and I see Carl Tiemann helping this couple who evidently drifted into the dykes an were stuck.  Carl anchors his boat in front of the dyke as close as he can get and disrobes to his superman outfit an actually walks down the dyke and
moves their boat off the dyke so they can be free.

What a guy!!!!!    Notice Carl did NOT put on a life jacket when walking down the dyke!!!

River friends are the best of friends!!

Tauni

After turning in for the night we were awakened by someone pounding on our boat.  Come to find out a group led by Mark Miles had decided to go on a walk about in Alton.  Well, we got up and joined them of course.  First stop was "The Boat at the River Bend" where we enjoyed the piano bar for a while and Maureen and Terry ran into Karen Foss from Channel 5, then on to a place called Tacos (I think) and the last stop we made was "Bubby and Sissys", an "Open minded kind of place" according to their website.  Well, we did go upstairs there to "JP's Show Lounge" for the drag show!  Thanks to Mark for helping Maureen get me back to the Alton Belle Casino so we could catch the shuttle back to the Marina.

"The pic was taken down river from Iowa Island .  That is lower Iowa with the partial sand bar sticking out next to the Ski Chute that snakes between Iowa and Enterprise.  You can see Anchor Yankers in the distance where the barge is at.  The pic was taken directly above Royal Landing"

The River Picture and e-mail on the Day In 2005 ---Friday--  was from Capt'n Robert Cope of the boat  "Slow Ride."  He sent us a picture of the dredging going on right below the power lines.

 Bill,

"Last week or so, I've noticed that the USACE is doing some dredging just north of the current Iowa Beach.   From what I've seen so far, it looks like next summers Iowa beach will be about 1/2 mile longer next year. They usually pile up the sand real steep and let us kick it down into a nice steady grade."

The River Pictures and e-mail on the Day In 2006 ----  was from Timothy Miller.......It's shot of the Delta Queen passing through Pool 26.

 Bill,

I heard the calliope and knew the riverboat was coming!

Saturday's view was through the trees but Sunday was wide open from my dock.

Location, Harbor Point Yacht Club, Sunday

Timothy Miller

RiverBill says....Good picture Tim !   ....I think that the flags and the rock jetty in the foreground and the house on the bluffs in the distance really adds depth and character to it.

River Of Ugly Fishes....... According to the on-line Wikipedia Encyclopedia, the name Meramac River...means 'river of ugly fishes' or 'ugly water' in Algonquian.

 A few river facts:

The first European explorer to travel the river was French Jesuit priest Jacques Gravier in 1699 - 1700.

"Early variant spellings of the name were Mearamigoua, Maramig, Mirameg, Meramecsipy, Merramec, Merrimac, Mearmeig, and Maramecquisipi."

Shallow-draft steamboats and flatboats were used in the olden days used to carry lead, iron, and timber down stream on the river.

Proteus... A Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel.....

New York welcomed the Proteus, a 100' long X 50' wide Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel earlier this month.  It looks sort of like a water spider and is designed for everything including military use, ocean exploration, sea rescue and biological studies.

The strange looking craft has a crew cabin suspended on a four-legged superstructure and rides the waters on pontoons made of metal and fabric that flex with the wave motion. It can cruise at a maximum speed of 30 knots.

Our River Pictures and e-mail of the Day .........  were sent in by Dave Diederich.

Hello Bill:

Here are a few photos of LST 325 (landing ship, tank) at Alton's riverfront. I took the self guided tour and it was very interesting. The current captain indicated that she is a breeze to pilot on the river as compared to open sea. The vessel is flat bottomed so it bounces like a cork in blue water. She drafts 4 feet at the bow and 9 feet at the stern to allow it to be beached.

A 9-11 Poem By Sherri Stanczak.......

Written the day after the 9-11 attack on America.

AMERICA: THE LAND THAT WE LOVE
by: Sherri A. Stanczak

Building crumbled to the ground, hearts broken in two
Cities scrambling all around not knowing what to do.

Planes exploding into a mass of fire, people trying to flee
Skies filled with clouds of smoke and grounds flooded with debris.

Tears flowing like the river, sirens screaming about
Reporters pushing their way through, seeing what they can find out.

Firefighters and policemen rushing in risking their lives
Instant orphaned children and widowed husbands and wives.

Airplanes are all grounded, amusement parks and sports shut down
America at a standstill with an emptiness all around.

Panic sweeping the nation along with fear and shock
Americans trying to pull together, rescue missions working around the clock.

Thousands of people giving their blood, sitting in lines for hours
Showing their support nationwide and reminding us of our power.

Volunteers giving their time churches gathering for prayer
Medical assistance and other aids are out there showing they care.

Wave your flags America and let’s all pray together
We will rebuild our nation and we’ll be stronger than ever.

“God bless America, this Land of the Free
And God please bless these victims and all their families.

God bless our children, too young to understand
And God bless our government to approach this with the right plan.

God bless our emotions that we react in the right way
God bless us all to learn to face today.

God bless our volunteers and all the time they give
God bless the injured to keep the desire to live.

God bless our enemy and the anger America has gained
And God whatever you do, please take away this pain!

God, as you’re looking down on us from Heaven above
Please bless America - this land we dearly love.”

Amen

 Sherri Stanczak

This month's issue has a good article on the Alligator Gar.   According to the article they are among the largest freshwater fish in North America, can weigh between 100 - 300 pounds and can reach a length of 10 feet.

"They hunt by ambush.   They float along, still as a log, until a tasty morsel gets close. They then sling their head to one side and slam their jaws down on the prey."
