In
regard to today's (11-30-05) "Not your normal Patrol" .... Hats
off to all those emergency responders! Here's a photo of the Auxiliary Vessel "Liberty" that I snapped on that day.
River Bill says.......... A person has to wonder just what is going in the minds of these folks when this picture was snapped. They are heading out towards a large burning boat and all kinds of things could happen. Looks like the firefighters, a man and a woman, are from Orchard Farm (OFFPD). The Coast guard Auxiliary is transporting them to the fire. Both, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Firefighters did a fine job on that day...And they usually don't get enough credit for it.
As you said...... HATS
OFF TO ALL THE EMERGENCY RESPONDERS. ~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~~^~~~~~

According to a news report on yesterday's on-line KSDK NewsChannel 5 ....... Missouri Governor Matt Blunt and Attorney General Jay Nixon have both written letters to the US Army Corps of Engineers requesting them to forgo a spring rise on the Missouri River in 2008.
Approximately 40 levees on the river remain damaged from the flooding that
occurred in 2007.

Golconda Lock and Dam 51 Houses on Ohio River..... The St. Charles Journal had an interesting bit of travel information in their Nov. 20 edition about four houses that sit on a secluded spot of the riverbanks of the Ohio River just south of Golconda, IL. The houses were built in the 1920's for the families of employees who operated the lock and dam that once stood at that location and now provide overnight accommodations for travelers.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers abandoned the dwellings in 1980 and are now owned by the city of Golconda. The dwellings have been restored, decorated with period furniture and equipped with modern conveniences for today's traveler..

PUBLIC INFORMATION SECTION, P.O. Box 1368, Jefferson City, MO65102
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Alton Pool Water Patrol Issues Fall Safe Boating Tips Fall signals the beginning of the various hunting seasons for Missourians. The waterways that were once filled with recreational boaters are now being inhabited by hunters traveling to their favorite "hot spots". Each year more hunters will die from drowning and the effects of hypothermia than from gunshot wounds. Why is the seasonal hunter who uses a boat at such a risk? Many hunters do not regard themselves as "boaters" and as a consequence do not consider the special conditions and challenges of the marine environment. The avid hunter tends to focus more on firearm safety and the pursuit of game than on boating safety. To ensure a safe hunting trip, you should be familiar with your boat, its equipment, the weather, and the basics of responsible and safe boating. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before your next outing: · Personal Flotation Devices (PFD's) are essential to safe waterborne hunting. In Missouri, you must have a wearable PFD for each person aboard. Make sure the life jacket is in good, serviceable condition and easily accessible. When you are sizing your PFD to fit, take into consideration the extra clothing you may be wearing. The life jacket should fit snugly and comfortably. Accidents can happen suddenly on the water, so it is strongly suggested that everyone wear their PFD. An acceptable alternative would be special purpose Coast Guard approved PFD's that are lightweight and unobtrusive. · Be familiar with the characteristics of your boat. Most hunters use smaller, more easily transportable craft. Boats of smaller dimensions tend to be more unstable in the water and prone to swamping or capsizing. Most fall and winter drownings occur when a small watercraft becomes unbalanced, due to a sudden shift of passengers or load, and the boat turns over. Avoid standing up or moving around in the boat. Be cautious when leaning over the side of the boat to retrieve items (such as duck decoys) from the water. Never move about your boat with a loaded gun or rifle. · Don't overload your boat with passengers or equipment. Check your capacity plate and stay well within those guidelines. An overloaded boat can be swamped easily by even small wakes. · Dress properly to protect against hypothermia in case you become wet. Clothing made of polypropylene, wool and synthetic fleece is the best to wear while boating during the fall. Again, your best protection in the event of an accidental "dunking" is to already be wearing your PFD. · File a float plan with someone who can act responsibly should problems arise. Let them know where you plan to be and how long you plan on being out. If you have a cell phone and service is available, call the person you left the float plan with and give them a periodic "status check". · Know the day's weather forecast and stay alert to changing weather conditions. When water and air temperatures are lower, there is a greater frequency of rapidly developing storms. If the weather looks bad or if there is a forecast for upcoming storms, don't risk going out. If you get caught in a squall, head for shore diagonally to the waves. Move passengers and equipment to the center of the boat to improve stability. Avoid crossing large bodies of water during rough weather. · Be prepared for an emergency. Many boating, hunting and fishing accidents can be minimized if you are prepared for an emergency. This includes being able to provide assistance to fellow boaters should a problem occur. Not all accidents are avoidable, but with careful planning and preparation, nearly all are survivable.

His picture is of the Grafton Ferry going through the chute between the islands that separate the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers at the confluence of the two rivers. Robert captured the autumn colors on the tree nearest to us that seems to jump out in front of everything else in the picture, which really contrasts to the greenery on the island on the other side of the ferry. In the background are the bluffs along the Great River Road ....And Oh Yeah...That blue water on a bright and sunny Fall day. Looks like a good day to take a ride on the Ferry. ~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~~^~~~~~ |

When did the Corps' involvement in river and harbor improvements begin?...... The 1824 General Survey Act authorized the President to have the Corps survey, plan, and submit estimates for routes "of such roads and canals as he may deem of national importance, in a commercial or military point of view, or necessary for the transportation of public mail." It also appropriated $30,000 to establish a Board of Engineers for Internal Improvements to help carry out the surveys prior to the passage of this act. There is little question that the legislation was instrumental in establishing the important role of the Corps in planning ferderal civil works projects. However, it was not until a few weeks later that the Corps received specific responsibilities for undertaking river improvements. An act "to improve the navigation of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers," passed on 24 May 1824, authorized the President (using Army Engineers) to remove snags on the two rivers and to conduct experiments to find ways to eliminate sand bars. To carry out the act's provisions, Congress appropriated $75,000. ~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~ The above was reprinted from the US Army Corps of Engineers website. According to a news article in the on-line Alton Telegraph .......Hundreds of bottles of Jack Daniel's whiskey are slated to be poured down the drain in Tennessee ...and some of it is almost 100 years old. More than two thousand bottles of the whiskey were seized in warehouse raids last month in Nashville and Lynchburg. Authorities suspect it was being sold by someone without a license and state law requires that it be destroyed. It's estimated value ....$1 million.
One of the bottles seized in the raid dates to 1914, it's seal is not broken and could be worth $10,000 on the collectors market.

Habitat loss, water pollution, and competition from invasive species like zebra mussels, have all taken their toll. Ten of the sixty five species found in the state of Missouri are considered endangered ! This summer, a team scientists built a device to simulate natural water flow in a stream. This devise helps the mussels grow bigger in research ponds now. Some mussels grew to about 4 inches in diameter before they are released this year. Previously they would only get as big as a grain of rice. They
have also learned how to tag the mussel that are
released....using superglue.

File Photo By George Shindel 02 Sept, 2007 Goldenrod Showboat and the Tugboat America Moored on the Illinois River in September of 2007
The article is written about the historic Goldenrod Showboat that use to be moored at the downtown St. Louis Riverfront and then at the St. Charles Riverfront. The showboat is now moored on the Illinois River near Kampsville, IL. and it is tied up in a court battle over some unpaid mooring charges. It is probable that an agreement will be worked out to allow the owner, a St. Charles businessman, to move elsewhere and continue his quest to find a new use for the vessel.....But one option put forth by the owner of the mooring site is to recover their costs by selling the boat for scrap . Dismantle it, sell the furnishings, burn the wooden structure to retrieve the copper and sell the steel hull to a salvage company. According to the Steamboats.org website "The Goldenrod is the oldest riverboat in the nation and the last surviving original Mississippi River Basin showboat in existence." According to the news article....The Goldenrod was given a national historic landmark designation in 1968, but this will not prevent it's demolition.

The paper edition of this news article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch also gave us an update on the Towboat America. It's rusting hull used to be moored just below Winfield Dam on the Mississippi River until November of 2004, when it was moved to it's present mooring site on the Illinois River. The owners of the mooring site on the Illinois River live aboard the vessel and it is being converted into a bed and breakfast.

One year after World War I drew to a close, President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11, 1919 as Armistice Day--a national holiday to celebrate victory in "the war to end all wars." Yet the dream of world of peace was soon shattered as first World War II, then the Korean Conflict called America's troops back to the battlefield. In 1954, Armistice Day was re-named as Veterans Day, a fitting tribute to all the men and women who have defended the cause of freedom around the world.
