The River Picture of Day ..... Is from Valerie Aulabaugh, who hails out of Grafton Harboer in the boat .."Last Call".

Bill,

A little flood water doesn't keep the residents of Grafton and a few die-hard boaters down. It's a great opportunity for a party. I have sent a few pictures from Saturday and Sunday at Grafton Harbor. Obviously we are an island but a great one at that. The pictures are of a party on the porch on Saturday, the Loading Dock under water, Piasa Winery from the back and one of the rock wall from the back of our boat. It's no longer hard to see over it and the turkey buzzards sure like to sun themselves on the top. NOAA says we saw the crest and the water should be on the way down. Hopefully we will all be out on the river soon!!!

Water Levels Are Finally Starting To Fall.....

The water levels are starting to fall finally. Alton was at 33 feet on Sunday and is expected to reach 33.2 feet on Monday. Grafton is finally peaking at 30.8 feet. The Illinois River at Hardin has already crested and is starting to fall. Workers have done a good job of stacking sandbags. They even built a wall around the Portage Des Sioux Water Plant.  The Missouri National Guard is still keeping an eye on the water though. They are especially watching low spots in West Alton. Hopefully this will be the end of it.

Sandbagging Efforts Have Stopped For Now........

For right now, the sandbagging has come to a halt in the St. Louis region for now. On Saturday,  the last 1,600 foot barrier in Lincoln County broke, which destroyed about 90 homes and did damage to about 70 homes. On Sunday the waters were supposed to crest in the St. Louis area. For now, they feel that the other levees will hold, so they have stopped sandbagging. If you would like information about future volunteers needed, call 1-800-426-4626.

Grafton Carries On..........

Grafton, Illinois is a great river town. They are used to the Mississippi River and they do what they can to keep their little town going. Most of their antique shops have remained open in spite of the flood waters. A few of the restaurants are still open also. The owner of the Loading Dock has decided to open up a temporary restaurant on the east side of the property. The Health Department allowed it because he will have portable toilets and hand washing stations. He is waiting about a week because he doesn’t want to cause too much extra traffic. He will be opening up though soon and he will sell barbecue and beer. To find out exactly when he will be opening, you can call 618-786-3494.

Old Monroe Missed The Worst Of The Flooding.....

According to STLtoday.com, areas such as Winfield, Foley and Clarksville were all hit hard with the flood this year. Old Monroe was lucky enough to miss the worst part of it.  Even though they did get high waters and several homes got water in them or in their basement, there are still many places that got very little damage. There were a couple of residents who totally ignored the warning to evacuate on Friday. These residents have lived there all their lives and feel that they don’t have anything to worry about. Even though their house is on higher ground, the roads around it are flooded. They have to take their Jon boat to go into town to get anything. They can get to their house only by boat. To read more about this town and a few of these residents who were born and raised in Old Monroe. They plan on holding out and they say that they’re not going anywhere.

What About The Barge Traffic?

The people in Hardin have been working hard, as many other river towns are to keep the water from getting to them. They have been sandbagging and working around the clock to save their homes and businesses. They are driving farther to work due to road closures and the ferries being down. Now they are questioning the barge traffic. They have wondering why there isn’t a speed limit for these barges that send wakes up to their sandbagged shoreline. They are also asking why they do not have to stay in the middle of the river. They feel that this would help the large wakes that come rushing in their town. On a better subject, the state of Illinois just received $3.5 million in funds to pay 200 workers to start cleaning up the flood areas. They need workers to clean up damaged facilities and others to deliver food, clothing and other items to the flood victims.

The Star Of A Reality Show Comes Back To Reality......

Matt Neustadt, the 29 year old farmer from Portage Des Sioux, who was starring in a reality show, “Farmer Wants a Wife,” was not able to join his friends to watch the finale of the show on Wednesday night. He had to take care of his farm. Since 800 of the 2,000 acres of his family land has got 6 to 15 feet of water in it, he is working to save as many crops that he can. He had to wait until after the show to express his true feelings for one of the single city women who were trying to impress this good old country boy. It really bothered Matt every week when he had eliminate one of the ladies. He was very impressed by 23 year old Brooke. In fact, he would love the chance to talk her into moving to the ‘Show Me Stat.’ Right now his thoughts are not on the reality show, they are on reality – the flood.

The River Picture of Day ...Sunday... Is from Capt'n Gary Hunt, who hails out of IVY Club, in Peoria IL, in the cruiser "Lien On Me"

Bill,

I saw someone else had posted a picture of the Spirit of Peoria when it was in Alton a few weeks back. I took this picture last Sunday just south of the Route 24 bridge (McCluggage Bridge).

For those who don't know; the Spirit of Peoria is docked at downtown Peoria and gives daily rides a few miles upstream. They also go on longer excursions periodically. I believe they are at Starved Rock this week.

The River Picture of Day ...Saturday... Is from the Winfield RiverCam yesterday about 2:15 PM.  It's the lock chamber at Lock and Dan 25!  The water is over the top of the up-river lock gates and over the concrete walkways around the lock house.

The good news is the Mississippi River has almost crested at Winfield !

Correction:

On 01 Aug, 1993 ... the Mississippi River crested at Winfield, Mo during the record setting flood of 1993

Bill,

Thank you for all of the info you have given on the flooding. I check it daily.
I am now a Florida resident with family boating out of Two River's in Louisiana.
My co-workers and I would like to help from afar. I know that supplies and money are needed. (We've done the hurricane thing here.) Where is the best place, other than the Red Cross, to send things? If you or your readers know we would appreciate the info.

Thanks again. Keep up the great work.

was sent in by Bert Yates.

He wrote

"Here’s a sight not often seen on the Upper Miss.  Although the picture quality is poor, the bright white cylinders laying on their side are two of the four steam generators being replaced at Callaway during this fall’s outage.  The trip started from Chalon, France on May 12th and they arrived at Callaway’s Missouri River docking facility on June 21st.   Each steam generator weighs in at a svelte 371.5 tons, not including the packing and shipping containers.  Not quite what Mike Tyson tipped the scales for his last fight, but definitely in the heavyweight class! "

Important update on the EPA's Clean Water Proposal affecting recreational boats.

OK all you boaters waiting for the water to go down, here is something constructive you can do to pass the time. Go to the BoatBlue.org website and mail off letters to your Senators and Representatives in support of the Clean Boating Act of 2008. Click here to read about the EPA's proposal that would require all of us to get permits relating to any water discharge from our boats, including bilge water.

This is important to all of us. I sent my letters by regular mail and have received positive responses from Senators Bond and McCaskill. Get yours in the mail ASAP.

Thanks,

The midwest is the only place where you hand someone a sandbag and they say thank you !

River Bill,

I just received a note of concern from a friend in California who saw the national news about the flood and realized it was where we live and play (on the River). She relayed a quote from another friend who is floodstruck in Iowa, "The midwest is the only place where you hand someone a sandbag and they say thank you."

I confirmed that it is absolutely true.

Hi Bill,

Just wanted everyone to know that the Elks Lodge #791 in Louisiana, Mo. has been the temporary home to 80 National Guardsmen and National Guardswomen and some displaced families during the 2008 Flood and sandbagging.
The lodge has been feeding approximately 500 per day, due only in part by the hard work, donations, and food brought in by members and the community. Even the Jefferson City Elks Lodge brought in food, toiletries, and a check for $1100.00 to aide in the relief.
It doesn't get any better than this--unless it quits raining up north, of course!

Thanks for all of the great input in this stressful time.

Hi Bill,
I read the notice about the Water Patrol removing vessels that they find operating on the flooded river. I was just wondering if I could get them to throw on some bottom paint and give 'er a good waxin'.
BTW, we lived on the Meramec River for twenty years and never filled a sand bag. Build with good materials and let the river do its thing. Some lower levees may be necessary for agricultural use, but to protect man made strutures? Where will it end, a drain pipe from Minnisota to New Orleans?
Anyway, River Rats, don't despair. You know this happens every few years and just consider it THE BIG FLUSH. I can just hear those SUV engines revving up in St.Charles and headin' for Lake of the Idiots, where your hard earned dollar takes you only as far as Jefferson City.
See you soon on the Mighty Mississippi,
Swing Set

First Annual Casey Cruise

Hi again Bill

Our dear nephew, Casey Williams and his best friend Brandon Travis were tragically taken from us last Wednesday in a car accident.  They both worked at Lake Center Marina and were true "river rats".  Today the Williams family and some close friends went on our first annual " Casey Cruise", and here we are,  all giving Casey our "Williams wave".  He will truly be missed.

Thanks Bill

Crests Keep Rising And Some Counties Are Still Threatened By The Flood...

With rain still in the forecast, officials keep raising the crest levels. Levees are being watched, some places have been evacuated and people have been injured or killed. With Elm Point Levee breeching, Deerfield Mobile Home Park residents are advised to evacuate because the waters should reach them by Saturday. This park houses about 700 people. Floodwaters have also caused some roads to be closed. In fact, Hwy 370 was closed for awhile this week because deer were congregating on the highway.

West Alton Levee Could Overtop This Week.....

People in West Alton thought they were ok, because the crest levels were better than expected; however, now with more rain on the way, that could all change. The levee is able to hold 33 to 34 feet of water. The levels are only expected to go to 33 feet, but the levee is very saturated. Many of the residents are leaving voluntarily. Officials have not forced an evacuation yet, but many of the people don’t want to take any chances.

Update...Little John's MotorSports

Hi Bill,

I try to check in as best that I can, but its not easy.
We were so very happy with all the people that came to see us at Creve Coeur Races.  We did promise to put on a good show, Hopefully it was, at least, what they would expect from our team.

I would like to share a few things behind the scenes, that a lot of people don't know, and thank some others.  Most know that Keith, Myself, and our families, are flooded out ,and living in our motor homes for a while. Most did not know that we moved in at Creve Couer early on Thurs, and did not move out until late Mon. because we really had nowhere to go with all of our equipment.

A special thanks goes out to

Dutch ,for the use of this lap top, and Internet access
St. Charles Boat And Motor, for the storage of the boat.
Lewis Boats, for a place to park our homes, at this time. WITH ELECTRIC
Our River Friends, who helped with our move out of our home and shop.
They also watch and handle problems, when I cant be there.

If it is not obvious yet, IT WILL BE SOON, I CAN NOT DRIVE IN TO MY HOUSE AND SHOP.

We are ready, and leaving on Fri. for another weekend of racing in Kentucky.
We will be racing in a faster class there (Ashly LOVES that)
Wish us luck, and I will get back when I can.

Jon Boat Stolen From Lake Center Marina by Father with Young Son by Side.....

A father and son stole a Jon boat from Lake Center Marina on Wednesday. When the Water Patrol caught up with them, they both jumped in the water. Within the hour, they caught up with the son down by Eagle’s Landing Marina. He told them that his father had drowned; however, the father was caught no long after that. The son had a life jacket on and was very tired. The father was charged with tampering with a motorboat and endangering the welfare of a child

Grafton Crest Changes Again......

Grafton was looking forward to Wednesday because the water was at 30.25 feet and that was supposed to be the crest level. However, now they have moved it to Saturday and changed it to 31 feet. Many of the businesses are temporarily closed and they are getting their sandbags ready. Some of the businesses that are still open are also preparing themselves with sandbags. Places that have water in it, cannot serve food. Some people have been without power temporarily. Even with all of the inconveniences, the telegraph.com says that the residents still love their river town and would not want to live anywhere else.

What FEMA Looks For In A Levee Inspection.......

Many of the people who work for FEMA are normally in the office working with clean water permits. However, when it is flooding, the team is walking up and down the rivers, inspecting the levees. They look for soft, spongy spots, sand boils, discolored patches of grass or a slick line down the grass. Finding these spots before they get out of hand, is very crucial. They try to repair these spots – even if they are very small – so they don’t turn into a big leak. These leaks can cause the levees to break. When this happens, it can create major flooding. Sometimes when a levee breaks, it can cause more problems than if there wasn’t a levee there at all. These levee inspections are very important and so crucial during high waters. The work can be boring and very tedious; however, the smallest hole or leak can cause people to lose their homes or their lives.

Click here To read more about these levee inspections and see this full story in STLtoday.com

22 More Missouri Counties Are Considered A Disaster Area......

Since northern Illinois has received eight inches of rain since Tuesday evening, that has put extra water in four rivers that contribute to the Mississippi River. Many places are under a levee watch due to the levees being so saturated. According to WTKR Channel 3 News stated that President Busch added 22 more Missouri counties to the federal disaster declaration list.

Shelters, Volunteers, Sandbagging and Other Flooding Information.....

In an article in KSDK online, they have listed information for people during the flood. They have listed shelters for people or pets that need a place to stay. They have asked for volunteers for sandbaggers in certain areas. They have also listed ways for people to donate money to help these people.

Bill,

Here is a pic of better days on the river. This was taken at Two Rivers Marina on Memorial Day weekend. As part of our tribute to our soilders we had a flag raising ceremony. The fellows performing the flag raising are, Steve Fuller(Army), Mike Driscoll(Navy), and Earl Ray(Airforce). We also collected items to send to our soilders serving overseas and were able to send out 7 boxes of goodies.

Lets hope we are all back on the river real soon.

Little John

Need Flood Pictures / Info

Riverbill -

Love your site, we check it almost every day summer and winter. We have been "river folk" for years. We are thankful to everyone supplying the pictures and video's of the flooding. Our house is in Portage Des Sioux (safe from the floodwaters hopefully), but we have property in Winfield on the river across from Cedar Hill. We have lost one boat this year due to the earlier flooding and moved our houseboat out of harms way just in time. We are viewing any pictures or video's that may give us a glimpse and let us see what is left of our property and dock. If you know of anyone that may have pictures or if your friends at Con Trios have some better video's of the properties along the river in Winfield, I would love to get in contact with them. We almost saw it on the June 18th video by Floyd, but it was too far away to see what was left.

Thanks again and keep up the great site!

Hannibal Is Still Under Watch......

Even though things look pretty good in Hannibal, in spite of all the rain, they are still keeping an eye on things. They are watching the levee, monitoring the rainfall and the National Guard plans on guarding the levees and walls.

Farming Could Be Worse Than 1993 ........

Farmers are really suffering this year due to the high waters. They lost $15-$20 billion dollars in crops back in 1993. This year could be worse because it has happened earlier in the season. Plus, it is too late in the season to re-plant the crops. Not to mention, the high cost of fertilizer, due to the high cost of fuel. This whole issue may cause food prices to go up about 9 percent even before the flood costs are assessed. Eggs have already gone up 20 percent and could go up another 10 percent before the end of the year.

The River Picture and e-mail of Day ......  Are from Mark Cutler of the boat Cutty's Ark

Hi Bill,

Just wanted to send you a few pics from this weekend at Alton Marina. They have built a crushed stone ramp from their upper parking lot onto the main walkway into the marina. It is visible in a couple of the attached pics.

The pool was nice this weekend, and they have two new hot tubs this year.

We're looking forward to the block party this coming weekend!

River Surfing

Hi Bill,
I haven't submitted a picture in awhile so I thought your visitors might like to see an action shot of "river surfing." This is Dustin catching the closest thing he has to his childhood ocean waves. If you want to see a video of him in action, check out the Movies pages at www.NauticalThugz.com . It's a large video (for now) so give it a bit to load.

Thanks Bill!

Illinois Governor Is Requesting More Funds For Flooding From The President   ........

According to an article on KHQA online, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich has made a request to President Busch to raise the share of disaster assistance for the state of Illinois. Usually the government will pay about 75 percent of the funds needed for a disaster area. Blagojevich has requested 90 percent from the government. He feels that the extra funds will take the burden off of the communities who are already in need of help. Right now there are 24 counties in the state of Illinois that are considered a disaster area. This similar request was similar to the one requested during the 1993 flood.

Another Levee Breaks…

According to STLtoday.com another levee broke on Tuesday. This levee is in St. Charles County and is there to protect the Elm Point area. A mobile home park there is threatened but was already evacuated because of the rising waters. On Monday, volunteers were asked to come to Winfield and fill 50,000 sandbags at the Pin Oak levee. If that levee happens to breach, it could flood about 100 homes and several businesses in east Winfield. It would also leave 3,000 acres of farmland swamped. It took people about six hours on Monday to fix a hole that a muskrat had left for them. Hannibal is doing their best to keep the river out of their town. Canton, Iowa crested on Sunday, just a few inches short of the 1993 flood. The rivers are starting to crest; however, with all of the levees breaking, it will take longer for the rivers to get back into their banks.

News From Afar....

Several Catfish Saved After Being Trapped During The Flood

There were about 100 large flathead catfish saved just south of Des Moines in Lake Saylorville. They became trapped there during the flood and were losing oxygen. They would have died pretty quickly if they hadn’t been rescued. The U.S. Corps of Engineers have found thousands of fish stranded in a small pond in Iowa. According to KHQA online, they have rescued one thousand other fish trapped in a pool.

1903 in River History

In 1903 The Mississippi River flooded East St. Louis. AT that time the East Side Levee and Sanitary District was formed to provide flood protection through an extensive levee system.

The River Picture and e-mail of Day ......  are from Christine and Brett of the cruiser...Blonde Moment

Hey Bill,

Hope all is well! Since we're unable to boat in the Alton Pool, we headed down to KY Lake and Lake Barkley this weekend with my parents (own Latitudes out of DCYC). The water was clean and the weather was great! We had a blast, although cruising through their version of Party Cove in a rental ski boat was a little rough on our egos! I've attached a couple of pics to share.

Take care,
Christine and Brett
