Yetseryear's River Picture of Day from 2008 ......  was from Valerie Aulabaugh, who hails out of Grafton Harboer in the boat .."Last Call".

Bill,

A little flood water doesn't keep the residents of Grafton and a few die-hard boaters down. It's a great opportunity for a party. I have sent a few pictures from Saturday and Sunday at Grafton Harbor. Obviously we are an island but a great one at that. The pictures are of a party on the porch on Saturday, the Loading Dock under water, Piasa Winery from the back and one of the rock wall from the back of our boat. It's no longer hard to see over it and the turkey buzzards sure like to sun themselves on the top. NOAA says we saw the crest and the water should be on the way down. Hopefully we will all be out on the river soon!!!

Missouri Department Of Conservation Tagging , And Studying Sturgeon...

According to a news report from kfvs.com..............  The Missouri Department of Conservation is catching and tagging shovelnose sturgeon near Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Conservation employees state that the shovelnose sturgeon is an indicator fish. This means that studying the shovelnose, gives a glimpse at the health of many other river species.

The general public can play a key role in this study.  When an angler lands one of the tagged fish, a call to the Department of Conservation to report where the fish was caught is all that is needed.  This information is critical in keeping the sturgeon thriving in local waters................

Mastercraft Avoiding Bankruptcy, Looking To Resume Production July 6

According to a news article from tradeonlytoday.com...............  Mastercraft has announced that it will not be filling for bankruptcy protection, and hopes to re-start production on July 6, 2009.

Mastercraft's plan to become viable again involves requesting that their creditors accept staged repayments, or discounted immediate payments.  The vendors agreeing to staged payments will receive 25% of the debt by July 30, and the balance in the next 4 quarters, beginning September 30.  Those venders that choose the immediate payment will agree to a 35% discount off of the top, with the remaining 65% due on July 15.

This restructuring is taking place out of court, allowing Mastercraft to avoid the stigma, and distractions of bankruptcy proceedings..............

Northwest Area Water Supply (NAWS) Project Lawsuit On Hold...........

According to a news report from kmov.com.......................  Missouri and Canada's lawsuit against North Dakota has been delayed, until possibly next year.  The lawsuits are challenging North Dakota's plan to divert water from the Missouri River to the state's northwest corner.

U.S. District Judge, Rosemary Collyer delayed the deadline for the state and federal governments' filing of legal briefs on the NAWS project.  The prior deadline was in mid-July.

The reason given for the delay was that a new Justice Department attorney assigned to the case needs more time to prepare.

The NAWS project met opposition from Canada as harmful organisms may be transferred to their waters.  Missouri's concern is that the River that forms it's western border may be depleted..............

River Reading

The Floating Boathouses On The Upper Mississippi:

  Their History, Their Stories.

According to a news story from madison.com..............  9 years ago, Marti Greene Phillips was hiking along the Mississippi River, and came upon a boathouse, with a lighted beer sign in the window. She struck up a conversation with the owner, and was invited in for a beer, and some stories.  Quite enthralled with the intimacy of the water and wildlife, Phillips purchased one of the boathouses.

While searching for information on the history of boathouses, newspaper articles, and local stories were all that was to be found.  At that point, Phillips made the decision to ferret out the history of boathouses from the dwindling generation of builders.

Published this spring, "The Floating Boathouses on the Mississippi: Their History, Their Stories"  focuses on the history of the 160 mile stretch of the Mississippi River, from Red wing, Minnesota, to Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin.  Since their emergence in the 19th century, boathouses have been disappearing into memory.  There are only about 600 left in that 160 mile portion of the Mississippi................

Hi Bill, it's Robert from the boat Slow Ride.
Sunday I was on the way back from a weekend at Lake Wapapello, and it had been 3 weeks since I had been on the river, so I decided to head out for a short trip on the river before I went home and to see my friends playing at the Loading Dock. This means, I had my boat in 2 lakes on the same day.

It's a pic of Terry Rodgers, Scott Nienhaus, and Karen Crawford waving from the stage at the loading dock (check out all those guitars).

The Telegraph had an article in last Wednesday's edition about the Alton Marina titled..... "Alton Marina lives up to dreams of supporters."

The Alton Marina opened in September 1996.... but it seems like just yesterday.

City, state and federal officials spent more than two decades of planning the marina. Talks started in the 1970s and the marina opened at the completion of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam 26

The city of Alton broke ground for the marina on Aug. 19, 1989 and spent more than $7 million to build the facility.

More River History

In 1673 ....Two Explorers Traveling The Mississippi River

Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet were traveling down the Mississippi River by canoe just below the mouth of the Illinois River when they spotted the a demon painted upon a bluff. (The Piasa Bird)

He recorded the following description of his discovery:

"While Skirting some rocks, which by Their height and length inspired awe, We saw upon one of them two painted monsters which at first made Us afraid, and upon Which the boldest savages dare not Long rest their eyes. They are as large As a calf; they have Horns on their heads Like those of a deer, a horrible look, red eyes, a beard Like a tiger's, a face somewhat like a man's, a body Covered with scales, and so Long A tail that it winds all around the Body, passing above the head and going back between the legs, ending in a Fish's tail. Green, red, and black are the three Colors composing the Picture. Moreover, these 2 monsters are so well painted that we cannot believe that any savage is their author; for good painters in France would find it difficult to reach that place Conveniently to paint them."

The painting remained visible on the river bluffs until the 1850's

when the cliff containing the painting was quarried for gravel.

Boating Under the Influence Enforcement Steps Up This Weekend
Operation Dry Water part of Nationwide Effort

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is alerting recreational boaters that Conservation Police Officers (CPOs) will be out in full force this weekend. CPOs will be on the look-out for boaters operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol as part of a national coordinated effort of stepped-up enforcement known as Operation Dry Water.

“We want people to have fun, but at the same time to be safe out on the water,” said IDNR Office of Law Enforcement Chief Rafael Gutierrez. “Alcohol use is one of the leading factors in fatal recreational boating accidents nationwide. We recommend that all boat operators have a designated skipper on board.”

Impaired boaters caught this weekend can expect severe penalties. In Illinois, operating under the influence (OUI) is a Class “A” misdemeanor for the first offense. It is punishable by a maximum of six months to one year in jail and/or up to $2,500 in fines.

“Our Conservation Police Officers work hard throughout the year to make sure boaters are safe on Illinois public waters,” said Chief Gutierrez. “We have zero tolerance for anyone found operating a boat under the influence at any time; however, boaters will see a stepped up effort as we approach the Fourth of July holiday.”

Operation Dry Water is a joint program of IDNR, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), and the U.S. Coast Guard. For more information you can log on to www.operationdrywater.org or www.dnr.state.il.us

Odd Boating News

Huck Finn And Becky Thatcher's Boat Impounded.................

According to a news story from wcco.com..............  After a young couple, Claire Boucher, and William Gratz, completed a home-made houseboat, packed up their sewing machine, potatoes, and chickens, they embarked on a journey down the Mississippi River, Huck Finn style.  Within moments of their launch, their motor failed.

So, the couple tied the vessel to a tree, a no-no in Minneapolis, and were warned by a police officer to vacate the premises.  A week later, the officer found the chickens grazing, and other signs of camping.  He cited the couple and sent them on their way.  Still no motor.

After making camp on an island, near the soon-to-be demolished Lowry Ave. bridge, they were rousted again.  The same officer found the couple, with their powerless boat on yet another island, where the city impounded the houseboat.

The pair picked up their belongings, minus the chickens, and have decided to complete the journey by .....bus..............

Behind Every Old Boat

There Is A Story

Antique boats moored in Lake Eustes at the Sunnyland Classic and Antique Boat Festival in Mount Dora Florida – March 2009

Photos and story submitted by Janet and Dale Roth

Grand Dames of the Water

In any waterway full of boats built for power and speed, you can almost sense her very presence before spotting the classic lady dancing gracefully atop the waves. These “Grand Dames of the Water” were created in a time when boat designers placed as much importance on beauty as on form and function and art was balanced equally with science to create a craft so perfect that it seemed better suited for a museum, than a lazy summer day on the river. Attention to every detail was a must in the design and building of these wooden works of art. Rich mahogany harvested from exotic locales was lovingly shaped, varnished, and polished to a mirror sheen. Piece by piece, the wood was formed, plugged, and caulked to create boats that gracefully transported boat owners and guests in style and comfort on waterways all over the world.

Today, these boats still command a place of honor as the Grand Dames of the Water. Restored to their original beauty they are appreciated for the simpler, classier times they represent and for the time and craftsmanship required to bring them back to life.

Take a step back in time at the Fourth Annual Antique and Classic Boat Festival this weekend (June 27 and 28) held at the Alton Marina. Sponsored by the Mississippi Valley Chapter of the ACBS (Antique and Classic Boat Society) the event will run from 11:00-5:00 on Saturday and 11:00-3:00 on Sunday. More than 75 boats will be on display (land and in-water) at the beautiful Alton Marina in Alton, IL. The event is free of charge and is a wonderful activity for the entire family. In addition to the boat show, the Alton Block Party is scheduled for Saturday evening and the Celebration of Broadway Village Antiques Festival is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday from 10:00-4:00.

We were wakeboarding up on the Illinois River when it started to sprinkle on Saturday afternoon. As we headed back to Lake Center Marina, the sprinkling became a deluge. We encountered the worst of it as we cut through between the Illinois to the Mississippi, visibility was down to about 10 feet. It began to ease up when made it to the Dardene Slough - this is a picture of the squall line snapped by my son Michael.

Missouri Water Patrol to Participate in Major Safe Boating Effort - "Operation Dry Water" is a National Campaign

This month the Missouri State Water Patrol will be participating in a national safe boating campaign that spans virtually every U.S. state and territory. "Operation Dry Water" is spearheaded by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and aims to raise awareness and reduce the incidence of intoxicated operation of vessels. The campaign will be conducted the weekend of June 26 – 28. The Water Patrol will be conducting multiple sobriety check points on the waters throughout the state during that weekend. Nationally, alcohol is a contributing factor in more than one-fifth of all boating fatality accidents.

Boaters who come across a check point on the water can expect that they may be stopped. Officers will make brief contact with the operator and perform a basic safety check of the boat's equipment. If the officer suspects the operator to be under the influence of intoxicants they will be asked to submit to a field sobriety test. All efforts will be made to keep the process as brief as possible and to ensure that traffic does not back up. The Missouri State Water Patrol appreciates the public's cooperation.

The Missouri State Water Patrol reminds everyone to "boat smart." If alcohol will be included as part of your next excursion, be sure to designate a sober captain.

   Boat At RiverBend

According to a news article in the Telegraph.com..................... the vacant Boat at the Riverbend is still for sale and the aldermen agreeded that the city of Alton should allow it to remain moored at Riverfront Park, in downtown Alton, for one more year at no charge.

The next thing to happen is for the city officials to sign another lease with its owner, Waterfront Ventures Inc.  WVI purchased the three-level entertainment vessel in September of  2007 right after the previous owner closed it in  August of the same year.

1959 Coral Queen Skipper Dale Roth at age 2

A Lifelong Love of “Classic” Boats

From the pictures above, it is obvious that Dale Roth, classic boat owner and co-chair of the upcoming Antique and Classic Boat Festival, has had a life-long love affair with antique boats. To be fair though, in the pictures, the boats were brand new and now the boats and the owners have aged gracefully. The Roth family bought the Coral Queen new in 1957. Skipper Dale Roth was just two-years-old at the time. On a family outing, the Coral Queen was damaged beyond repair in a sudden summer storm and was replaced with the blue and white 1960 Alumicraft shown above. The 15’ alumicraft served the family well for more than a decade before it was sold in the early 70’s for a new fiberglass 19’ Formula. The Alumicraft was sold to a family friend who owned it for 15 years before selling it back to the then grown and married Dale Roth who used it as a dinghy behind the family houseboat. The first time Dale’s mom saw the boat with her two life-jacketed grandsons bouncing on the white seats in anticipation of a ride, she broke into tears. It was as if someone had magically turned back time and she was seeing her own two boys ready to go. The boat has stayed in the family and still provides fun for the Roth family on the river, area lakes, and of course on display at area boat shows.

To see the 15’ 1960 Alumicraft, please visit the Fourth Annual Antique and Classic Boat Festival this weekend at the Alton Marina. The show, sponsored by the Mississippi Valley Chapter of the ACBS (Antique and Classic Boat Society) will feature more than 75 wood, fiberglass, and steel runabouts and cruisers from the 1930’s to the early 1970’s. Show hours are Saturday, June 27th from 11:00 to 5:00 and Sunday, June 28 from 11:00 to 3:00. Admission is free. For more information on the show or on becoming a member of the Antique & Classic Boat Society, please contact Jack Hartwig at jackhartwig@charter.net.

River Shipping News
Waterways Council Not Pleased With Proposed 2010 Budget...............

According to a news report from joc.com................. President Obama's budget for 2010 has set aside $5.125 billion for Army Corps of Engineers civil works projects on the inland waterway system. This is over $275 million less than congress approved for 2009. The Corps budget mainly goes toward building, maintaining and improving the locks.

The smaller infrastructure budget, added to a proposed lockage fee, has river shipping interests upset.

Waterways Council Inc. a national organization including waterway advocacy groups, carriers, shippers, and ports, states that they are "surprised and disappointed" the Obama administration, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would back a tax that discourages shipping on energy efficient, and environmentally-sound barges.

New Financing Terms For Boat Dealers Called For By Lawmakers..................

According to a news article from baxterbulletin.com............... A bi-partisan group of congressmen sent a letter to Ben Bernanke, chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board, and Tim Geithner, secretary of the U.S. Treasury, asking the two to name boats and RVs as an asset class in the Term Asset-Backed Securities Lending Facility (TALF).

This would reduce the "haircut level" or the portion of an asset that cannot be used as collateral, and thus improve boat dealer liquidity.

The letter was penned to voice concerns that TALF is moving at a slow pace, and not covering the needs of non-automotive floorplan asset classes, and request a re-examination of the TALF program's "haircut level" for non-automotive floorplan asset-backed securities..................

Little John's Motorsports Update !

Hi All

After the overwhelming results from last weekend, I am so proud that our team was a part of it.
Even though we lost in the points race, we still gave the Texas crowd a spanking.

I wish I could express how it felt, to not be able to get to our rig, through all of the people.
Not only Contrios, but all of our river friends.

I want to say THANK YOU, not only for coming and supporting our team. I think you
were all a part of a bigger thing.

The promoters of the race next weekend are paying our expenses to go to San Angelo, Texas.
They want to continue the grudge match between the little farm girl from Mo. and the BIG GUYS
from Texas.
Like All Star Wrestling, We are together every night, and are Dear Friends, but the crowd does
not know that.
Behind the scenes, a few were watching for trouble after the race, THAT WAS COOL.
We had dinner together that night, putting the plan together, and making arrangements.
THE LITTLE GIRL IS GOING TO FIGHT THEM ON THIER OWN TURF

We also have a business to run, and things to get done before leaving Thurs. night for a 15 hour ride.
I promise that our team will do the best we can to make you all proud.

I will get back when I can

Whoz Yer Daddy

1966 Chris Craft

Bill,

We are also members of the Mississippi Valley Chapter of ACBS and will be participating in the boat show at Alton Marina on June 27th & 28th. About 6 years ago, I was dating my soon to be wife Susan. We were riding the Grafton Ferry when she told me how she used to sit down by the river and watch the boats go by. She said her dream was to someday have a boat of her own and cruise up and down the river in it. I had owned boats in the past but did not have one at the time, so I set out to “take a look” at what was out there with the idea of surprising her. I found our boat for sale at a local marina from an ad in the paper. She is a 1966 Chris Craft Cavalier Cabin Cruiser. I loved it the minute I saw it and I knew right then I was going to buy her. What I didn’t know was how awe struck Susan would be when she saw her. I have never seen anyone so taken as she was. My original plan was to purchase the boat and have Susan help with expenses. She would have none of that and insisted on a 50/50 partnership right down the line. The partnership became more formal one night when I proposed to her while we were spending the weekend on the boat. Since then we have continued our “partnership” and have spent many happy hours with our family enjoying the river and our classic Chris. We recently repainted the entire boat and re-built the engines so she is as good as new! We named her “Whoz Yer Daddy”

Hope to see you at the show!

Con Trios Yacht Club Update...............

What a GREAT IDEA Past Commodore Tim Tighe had! Con Trios participated in the 30th Annual Creve Coeur Classic Drag Boat Races at Creve Coeur Lake. Besides an exciting weekend of racing for the over 100 people from Con Trios Yacht Club we shared our tent with Autism Speaks (the primary charity of the event) where they had games and such for the kids. Thanks to the St. Louis Drag Boat Association for putting us front and center on the water, the banner on the VIP Tent and the VIP tickets for the weekend for our members. Talking to our guests quite a few had never experienced Drag Boat Racing in our backyard. Safe to say most were quite impressed watching boats accelerate to 180 MPH in just a quarter of a mile. We all enjoyed cheering on our Past Commodore John Bicknese's boat "Kwitchabitchin" and his driver, 18 year old Ashly Ruf, daughter of Con Trios members Keith and Terrie Ruf. Ashly is the youngest female driver to be certified in a 180 MPH capsule boat! She did not win her class but she wooped a man in a grudge match after the regular racing, beating him by one hundredth of a second! Posted a few pictures on the "Photo Galleries" page. Will have some more pictures (from Lisa for sure) and more information, check back again.

Many thanks to all that helped set up and take down our tent and tables. Friday it was Past Commodores Gary Meinershagen, Mike Ramirez, Board Members Bill Brueggeman, Mike Baisch, Scott Hickey and myself. Monday Gary, Bill, Mike Baisch and myself were back along with Past Commodores Sonny Robbins and Tim Tighe, Mike's two boys and Con Trios Member Ernie Stolze.

Missouri River
Senator Kit Bond Calls Federal Restoration Efforts "Nuts"..............

According to a news report from kmov.com................. Missouri senator, Kit Bond R, states that the federal government's plans for restoring conditions for the pallid sturgeon are "nuts" and environmentally unsound.

Bond asserts that the construction of side channels will entail the dumping of millions of tons of farmland soil containing hypoxia-causing phosphorous into the Missouri River, Senator Bond also says that he will do what he can to block the $70 million funds request from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Corps, however, claims that they will be reintroducing sediment, rather that using farmland soil, and that the nutrients are only a small portion of the hypoxia equation. At this time the National Academy of Sciences is examining the sediment problem.................

Illinois Teenager Catches Rare Lake Sturgeon

A 17 year old teenager caught what Illinois officials say is only the sixth lake sturgeon reported caught in Illinois in more than 70 years. The fish was 45 inches long and weighed in at 21 pounds.

Lake sturgeon can grow to 5 feet in length and date back in time 130 million years.  A time when dinosaurs still roamed the earth.

Lake sturgeon are listed as endangered species in 19 or 20 states, including Illinois. The population is way down because of overfishing and dam construction. A female sturgeon can't reproduce until 14 years of age and many fish don’t reach sexual maturity until they have reached their mid-20s. Lake sturgeon only spawn only once every 4 to 9 years.

Chad Enright’s fish was measured, photographed and then released.

Rock River

    Huge Fish Kill......

According to a news story on suakvalley.com........ A huge fish kill has been reported on the Rock River between Grand Detour, north of Dixon in Ogle County, and the lower dam in Sterling, Illinois.  The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has issued an advisory warning the public not to eat fish from that area of the river.  The dead fish are mostly bottom feeders.

There is reported speculation that ethanol runoff from the train derailment in Rockford, Illinois could be the cause.

The IDNR, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency are working together to investigate the fish kill.

Missouri Department of Conservation News

Frog Season Opens At Sunset June 30th

RiverBill's received the following e-mail news release from Jim Low of the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Ready, set, frog!
Lay the groundwork now for a successful hunt.

JEFFERSON CITY–Deer hunters do it. So do turkey hunters. Even trout anglers spend time scouting the locations of their quarry. So why not frog hunters?

Missouri’s frogging season opens at sunset June 30, but waiting until then to take flashlight and gig in hand surrenders an important advantage to the slippery amphibians. Frogs are intimately familiar with the approaches and escape routes to their favorite perches. Smart froggers level the playing field by checking the lay of the land– or swamp – beforehand.

Scouting can be as simple as sitting in a lawn chair at your favorite frogging spot, taking note of where big male frogs are calling. Obsessive froggers have been known to skulk through a 40-acre marsh mapping individual frogs’ precise locations with GPS waypoints. Either way, scouting helps avoid wasted time and effort locating frogs and the best ways to reach them in the dark.

Getting your feet wet before the season opens offers distinct advantages. You can bring along pruning shears and remove low-hanging branches that block access to remote spots. You also can discover how close certain frogs will let you approach and which direction they habitually jump.

Beyond the obvious advantage of improving your chances of success, scouting out frogging spots a few days before the season is a pleasant excuse to spend time outdoors on early summer evenings. And your presence might keep the criminal element at bay.

Conservation agents know that a small number of poachers like to beat legitimate froggers to the punch by jumping the gun on the season, and more than one frogger has arrived at his or her chosen spot on opening night only to find it nearly empty of keeping-sized frogs. If you observe illegal frogging, you can report it using the toll-free Operation Game Thief Hotline, 800-392-1111. Reports can be made anonymously, or you can leave contact information to qualify for a cash reward if your report leads to a conviction.

The limit for frog hunters is eight bullfrogs or green frogs in the aggregate daily, and 16 in possession. The period for counting limits ends at midnight each day. Consequently, froggers can legally take a limit of frogs between sunset and midnight June 30 and then catch another limit after midnight on July 1. To do this legally, you must keep the first eight frogs separate from those taken after midnight. Also, remember that individual hunters must keep their frogs separate and identifiable from those of other froggers.

The Wildlife Code of Missouri permits taking frogs on either a hunting or a fishing permit. With a hunting permit, you can take frogs with a pellet gun, longbow, crossbow, hand net or with bare hands. With a fishing permit, froggers may use hands or a hand net, a gig, a longbow or hook and line. Frog hunting is legal – and most effective – at night with an artificial light.

The bullfrog is North America’s biggest frog, measuring up to 8 inches all scrunched up and ready to jump. A good-sized bullfrog can weigh well over a pound, much of which is legs. Green frogs are more modest-sized, topping out at about 4 inches long when sitting. Though not as large, their legs taste just like those of bullfrogs.
