Hey, Bill!
We went downriver to check out the fall colors on the bluffs and stopped at Palisades for some refreshments (you know they have the best view of the bluffs on the river). That's Katy and friend Melanie on the boat, and me and my brother KC on the dock (pictures by Mary).
As we left we apparently came across the ACBS river
cruise just passing the shrine. We couldn't get decent
pics of all of them, but these were the better ones.
It's nice to see the old boats in such great shape and
still cruising. |

Genmar Shifting Focus From Reorganization To Sale...........
According to a news report from tradeonlytoday.com................ Genmar Holdings has announced a change in their strategy for exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They are now following a sales course, instead of a reorganization.
Genmar's chairman, Irwin Jacobs has stated that he attempted to reorganize, but was unable to gain the cooperation of all of the parties needed to make the reorganization work.
Jacobs, while unable to discuss specifics, confirmed that he is a bidder for the company's assets, and has the intentions of resuming business operations as they are..........

US Army Corps of Engineers
Area rivers to crest above flood stage, Corps of Engineers warns St. Louis, Mo. -- The rain that has pounded the region during October marks the month as the rainiest October on record in St. Louis. As a result, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water control managers and the National Weather Service are monitoring are streams and rivers, both for flash flooding and for longer term impacts on the main rivers of the region. While predicted river flows and elevations are no where near record highs, the Mississippi Missouri and Illinois Rivers are predicted to reach flood stages as early as Saturday. The Mississippi River at St. Louis is currently predicted to crest at 35.0 feet, Monday. Flood stage in St. Louis is 30.0 feet. For comparison, on July 1, 2008, the river in St. Louis crested at 38.67 feet. The Corps of Engineers in St. Louis is closely coordinating with Corps Districts north and south of St. Louis, as well as with the National Weather Service. According to District Commander, Col. Thomas O’Hara, “While local rain can cause localized flash flooding, main river floods are usually the cumulative results of rainfalls upstream as well as here. The local flood risk reduction systems are functioning well and we believe they will continue to do so. But it’s prudent to keep the public’s safety in uppermost in our mind and we are.” Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District Water Control Office operations chief Joan Stemler said, “Rain that has fallen in recent days has saturated the ground. As a result, almost everything that is falling now is running off almost immediately and rivers are rising area-wide. Our reservoir lakes are rising as well, although for now they are well able to hold inflows that we will release later when the rain stops and rivers come down.” The Corps of Engineers partners with local levee districts and area government organizations as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for flood fighting if necessary. The Corps also operates locks and dams on the Mississippi River. While these are not flood control structures and have only minimal impact on flooding, they are operated to minimize flooding while continuing to support navigation. In all instances, public safety is the Corps number one mission. The region last faced wide spread flooding in 2008, but just as last summer, localized flash flooding is always a threat. Corps of Engineers reservoir lakes also are experiencing high water from the rain. Boaters are being cautioned to be aware of floating debris that enters lakes from the rivers that form them and visitors are being warned to avoid flood prone areas. At Wappapello Lake in southeastern Missouri, some low lying camp grounds have been closed due to rising waters. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers safety experts and other authorities want to remind long time residents and inform newcomers of several measures they may take to best ensure their own safety.
You may track river and other weather data on at least two web sites. http://mvs-wc.mvs.usace.army.mil/dresriv.html

Boys In A Little Hot Water After Rescue.............
Bradley Edwards and his pal, Mike Melchior slipped off the the Meramec River to fish during their day off from school. Bradley wanted a closer look at a snake he noticed in the River, slipped on a rock and fell in the water.
After failing to retrieve his buddy, Mike called for help on his cell phone. The Rock Community Fire District responded quickly, snatching Bradley from the water, safe and sound.
While the boys' parents were happy to hear both boys were O.K., Bradley's mother thought the boys were fishing at a creek that runs through their neighborhood. Mom's parting words to Bradley when he left to go fishing were "Please stay away from the Meramec".............

For 3Q 2009, net revenues fell to $168.2 million from the $180.2 million reported for 3Q 2008.
West Marine credits the decrease to the fiscal calendar shift from 2008, leaving fewer peak season days in the third quarter, in addition to store closings over the past 5 quarters reducing net revenues by $8.9 million..............

New Water Standards Ordered By EPA............
According to a news report from fox2now.com............. New clean water standards have been ordered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the 28 1/2 miles of Mississippi River surrounding St. Louis. The EPA wants to see the water clean enough for swimming.
This stretch of the River is being polluted by billions of gallons of waste and sewage each year. This is due to overflow from the out dated sewer systems that combine raw sewage and street runoff. When the system is overwhelmed during heavy rains, excess flows into the River.
The EPA states that infrastructure improvements are the only way to remedy the situation. The Metropolitan Sewer District is currently spending $6 billion to fix the problem...............

Dredging at Pere Marquette
Yesterday's E-mail question about Dredging Bill,
What is up with the dredge material being pumped into bags at Pere Marquette?? Sorry - did not have a camera. The dredge is pumping the material into large black plastic bag type structures as big as greenhouses. At the moment it already looks like enough to cover a football field and there are still plenty more bags to unroll.
Wondering how they will move it and why they are doing it that way.

Study Reviews Dam Purposes............
In a news article from kmov.com.............. According to officials from states along the Missouri River, a study that congress ordered will assist in the determination of whether changes are necessary to the legally authorized purposes of 6 reservoirs constructed on the Missouri River.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is to re-evaluate the original uses lined out by the 1944 Flood Control Act. The Flood Control Act authorized the construction of dams in Montana, North and South Dakota.
The upstream states want to keep water, to support recreation such as fishing and boating, whereas the downstream states need water for barge traffic..........

Flow Analysis Demonstrates Need To Raise Levees....................
According to a news story from djc-gp.com................... After the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers performed a more sophisticated technical analysis of the flow of the Mississippi River, they concluded that some levee sections will need to be raised.
The reason is that researchers discovered that the levels of the Mississippi River were in fact lower than normal for hurricane season during Katrina.
Apparently, several miles of levees need to be raised from a half a foot, to 3 1/2 feet at mile marker 70.............

Dredging at Pere Marquette
Bill,
What is up with the dredge material being pumped into bags at Pere Marquette?? Sorry - did not have a camera. The dredge is pumping the material into large black plastic bag type structures as big as greenhouses. At the moment it already looks like enough to cover a football field and there are still plenty more bags to unroll.
Wondering how they will move it and why they are doing it that way.

Governor Nixon Opposes Missouri River Diversion.............
According to a news report from missouriruralist.com................ Missouri Governor, Jay Nixon, is pressing the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar to reject the proposal to divert water from the Missouri River basin, and pump it to the Red River Valley.
The diversion was proposed to provide more water resources for eastern North Dakota, as well as portions of Minnesota.
Governor Nixon sent a letter to Salazar, in which he requested the consideration of an "in basin" option that would utilize resources in the Red River Valley. This option would not only cost less, have less impact on the environment, and could be quickly implemented, and scaled to meet actual water needs............

Third Quarter Results In For Marine Products Corp............
According to a news report from tradeonlytoday.com.............. The manufacturer of Chaparral and Robolo boats, Marine Products Corp., has announced a 72.3% decrease in net sales, and a 75.7% decrease in the number of boats sold during the third quarter of 2009.
Marine Products produced net sales of $8.73 million for 3Q 2009, versus $31.58 million for 3Q 2008. The drop in net sales was attributed to the decrease in boats sold.
Marine Products CEO, Richard A. Hubbell states that even though financial results were negatively impacted by low sales to dealers, and the financial backing of dealer inventory reduction efforts, it was an investment to prepare for better times in the future.............

Outdated Sewer Systems Dumping Raw Sewage Into Rivers.............
According to a news report from fox2now.com.................. Annually, the outdated sewer system in St. Louis, Missouri allow some 13 million gallons of raw sewage to flow into the Mississippi River, and the River Des Peres. That equates to about 600 tank cars.

One of the seven wonders happens to be the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway. Known locally as the Great River Road, the 33 mile stretch of highway runs along the convergence of the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois Rivers.

Corps Can't Protect New Orleans From Flooding..............
According to a news report from theage.com.au............. The chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, General Robert van Antwerp, has announced that the Corps cannot protect the city of New Orleans from flooding. General Antwerp further stated that his team was in "personal conflict" with the Mississippi River.
Efforts to reduce the risk of flooding include improved early warning systems, improved evacuation strategies, and improved levee systems to hold back most of the water.
The newly formed Office of Coastal Protection has been tasked with the reconstruction of some of the barrier islands lining the gulf coast, in an effort to protect wetlands from wave action. Behind the barrier islands are the remains of marshlands, now dotted oil rigs..............

New Mississippi River Bridge Opens Thursday.............
According to a news article from kare11.com............. Thursday marks the opening of the new Granite City Crossing Bridge over the Mississippi River at St. Cloud. People attending the dedication ceremony were allowed to walk across the nearly completed span.
The Granite City Crossing Bridge replaced the De Soto Bridge, that was torn down after inspectors found distorted gusset plates.
The new bridge was completed in only 18 months. Since the contractor finished ahead of schedule, they will be given a bonus................
Click here to read this news article.
The De Soto Bridge Constructed in 1958, the De Soto Bridge carried 4 lanes of Minnesota Highway 23 over the Mississippi River. As the banks of the Mississippi River are so steep on either bank, the Bridge featured deep trusses, and was painted black, which was atypical of highway bridges.
Following the 2007 collapse of the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis, this De Soto Bridge was inspected and deemed safe. However, during a follow-up inspection in 2008, 4 bent gusset plates were discovered, and the bridge was ordered closed..............
