An overnight snow and ice storm hit the St. Louis area reaping havoc on the area marinas.

Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on this day in Florida, Missouri. Better known by his pen name Mark Twain.  One of Missouri's favorite native son's

MARK TWAIN

 ON

THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER

Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. When he was four years old, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri , a small town on the Mississippi River. As a little boy he always dreamed of someday being a steamboat pilot.

Clemens’ father died in 1847 and it was then that he took a job as an apprentice with Joseph Ament, who was the publisher at the Missouri Courier. Clemens submitted his first published sketches when he was only 16 years old. He worked as a printer for two at Western Union and moved around for awhile, working as a printer in several cities including Philadelphia and New York City.

In 1857, Clemens went back to the Mississippi River and became a cub steamboat pilot and after two years, he received his river pilot license. He worked as a steamboat pilot until river traffic was stopped due to the Civil War in 1861. At that point, Clemens volunteered with the Confederate Calvary. His life with the Calvary was short lived and in 1862, he moved out west to the Nevada territory to mine for silver.

He also began working as a reporter for the Virginia Territorial Enterprise in 1862 and soon after started using the pen name, “Mark Twain.” This name came from his days of working as a riverboat pilot. Mark Twain was the phrase used by the crew when they were traveling through low water. They used a sounding line to see how deep the water was. Once it reached two fathoms or 12 feet, it meant they were in deep waters and it was clear to move on, they yelled out to the Captain, “Mark Twain,” to let him know everything was good to go.

Clemens loved the Mississippi River, but he probably didn’t always enjoy the it the same way we do now, because he was usually working on the river. However, in some of his books, he describes the life of playing on the river as a child. Even though he never returned to the Mississippi River after his river pilot days, he did write about it and his experiences on the river.

Clemens lived in many places throughout his lifetime. He lived in St. Louis, San Francisco, New York City and many places in between including Germany and Europe.

. In 1870, Clemens married Ms. Olivia Langdon in Buffalo, New York and soon after moved to Connecticut where Clemens wrote some of his best stories. Clemens wrote many books in his lifetime. Most of them were about his life experiences.
Some of his most famous writings were about the river.... “Life on the Mississippi River,” “Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”

Clemens was known mainly as a humorist while he was alive: however; his vivid characters, his use of language and the wonderful description of setting transformed American literature. He has also given us a historical perception of the Mississippi River and what went on there in his time.

What a genius.

Asian Carp Update

Great Lakes Anglers Concerned About Carp Invasion.............

According to a news article from thetimesherald.com...............  As the news that the Asian carp may have breached that electric barriers installed in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, Great Lakes fishermen have begun to worry.

Vic Ruehle, president of the Blue Water Sportfishing Association, stated that it would wipe out Lake Huron, all of the native species would be lost.

The carp can grow as large as 7 feet long, and weigh over 100 lbs.  The carp are filter feeders, and consume plant and animal plankton.  They have no natural predators...........

Bill,

Here is a picture taken last Saturday the (July) 18th of Bill & Tammy Garness upon their return trip from Wabasha, MN. Bill & Tammy's boat is a 44' Gibson by the name of Off Duty. Their home port is Two Rivers Marina. They left Two Rivers on July the 4th and traveled upriver along with Bill's 2 brothers who had driven down from MN, on their return trip Bill's 2 sister accompanied them back to Two Rivers, where they arrived safe and sound on the 18th. We had a welcome home reception waiting for them. They had great stories of their adventures on the Mississippi River to share with us.

Thanks for the great job you do of keeping us all up to date about what's going on on the river.

Hey, Bill,

Thanks to procrastination, we had one more great day on the water. We've been putting off winterizing the Y2Katy for weeks now and seeing how old man winter took a few days off, Mary and I cruised down to the Grafton Harbor on Friday. We had an excellent lunch at the Grafton Harbor Bar and Grill, then we headed upriver to the Two Branch sluice and spent a couple of very relaxing hours on the boat and on the sandbar. But unfortunately, we did end up winterizing after we got back to Lake Center. I guess the fun's over until next spring.

Flood Insurance

Officials Fighting Mandatory Insurance Say Coverage Good Idea.............

According to a news report from stltoday.com............  While Metro East officials are embattled with the feds over forced flood insurance for the American Bottoms property owners, leaders are saying that purchasing coverage now may not be such a bad idea.

The thought is that if flood insurance is purchased now, and the property is reclassified as high risk, the lower insurance premiums would still remain.

Whatever the results are of the political pie fight regarding mandatory flood insurance, repairs to the deficient Metro East Mississippi River levees are still a ways off.............

Mississippi River Levees At New Orleans

Reconstructed Levees Need To Be Rebuilt, Due To Debris..........

According to a news article from nola.com...............  A previously reconstructed portion of a New Orleans, Louisiana hurricane protection levee, is now being rebuilt again, because it contains too much debris.  Boh Bros. Construction Company, contractor on that project, stated that  an internal review uncovered no debris issues.

The debris was discovered in the top two and a half feet of the levee, by another contractor, Southern Services and Equipment, Inc.,  who is raising and widening the levee.  The debris is primarily concrete, with some pieces of metal and wood.

Corps levee guidelines allow up to 1% "unsuitable material" in levee construction material.  Southern Services has removed several thousand cubic yards of unsuitable levee material, and has begun reconstruction with freshly excavated clay.............

Red River In North Dakota

Unique Solution To Flooding - Dig Another River............

According to a news story from startribune.com..............  On the heels of historic flood levels, and the consequent sandbagging and dike construction efforts to protect Fargo, North Dakota, and Moorhead, Minnesota from the Red River, comes a plan to alleviate flooding in the future.  Construct an alternate channel.

The basic plan would excavate a channel, that would be a third of a mile wide, 30 feet deep, and flow 25 miles around Moorhead.  This undertaking comes with a price tag of $962 million, and is estimated to flow more than twice the amount of water that the Mississippi River flows through downtown Minneapolis.

Alternative plans would have water flowing around Fargo, with a cost estimate up to $1.3 billion.  The cost - benefit ratio on the alternative plan is not as high as the basic plan, however............

Asian Carp Update

Bad News - Good News About Carp In The Lakes...........

According to a news story from freep.com...........  Scientists at the Department of Natural Resources Lake Huron are asking important questions, now that the Asian carp is knocking on the Great Lakes' door.  Will the carp consume algae that covers thousands of miles of the lakes, and can they reproduce in the still waters of the Great Lakes?

Ph.D. researcher, Je He, who earned his master's degree studying Asian carp in China, had some answers.  First, bighead and silver carp will eat the prolific green (cladophora) algae, and the silver carp will eat and possibly make worse, the toxic blue-green algae that has taken over where the zebra mussels have consumed the green algae.

The good news is that specific conditions are needed for the carp to spawn, namely, current speed that allows the eggs to float free for 5 days, prior to landing on a oxygenated, rocky nursery area. If the eggs land too soon, they will die.  Proper water temperatures are also critical..............

Arch Grounds Design Competition Starts In Spring...........

According to a news report from stltoday.com............  The design competition for the Arch Grounds is set to begin in the spring, with the announcement of details pertaining to the competition, with design submissions being accepted in the summer. A design may be chosen as early as next fall.

Back in October, the Park Service had announced their plans for the park, from enhancing pedestrian access between the park and downtown, proposing that more activities be held at the north and south ends of the park, to the expansion of the park across the Mississippi River.

Park staff will be writing manuals for the competition over the winter, that will encourage designers to suggest new ways to use portions of the park.  The ultimate goal is to have all work completed by October 28, 2015, in time for the 50th anniversary of the installation of the final stainless steel piece............

Mississippi Scenic Highway

MoDOT Contemplates Reroute Of Scenic Highway..........

According to a news article from fox2now.com............  The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is considering the re-routing of a portion of Route 79, following a second closure of the highway.

A large pavement crack had appeared, prompting the closure, from Route TT at Ashburn to Route B east of Frankford, on Sunday.  This area is close to the site of an April, 2008 landslide that damaged the roadway, and forced a closure of two months.

According to MoDOT officials, relocation of the route is one of many options under consideration as a long term solution to landslides..............

Upper Mississippi River

Shipping Season Expected To Be Longer This Year...............

According to a news report from wsaw.com...........  Due to the soggy fall harvest season, grain shipments have fallen behind schedule along the upper Mississippi River.  Grain shipments are said to be off by around 50% through mid October.

Kent Pehler of Brennan Marine, service provider for barge lines at the port of La Crosse, Wisconsin, stated that while the first half November has been strong, the lost volume has yet to be made up.

Ron Johnson, of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority states that this year, the port Superior has seen an increase in grain shipments around 28% over last year.

Johnson says that the seaway locks will be closing December 29, 2009, and Pehler is expecting some limited grain loading through December 7, when the river locks are slated to close for maintenance.........

River Research

NGRREC's Director Driven By Love Of Rivers.............

In a news story from thetelegraph.com............  Richard "Rip" Sparks, the director of research at the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, has been fascinated with streams, ponds and rivers, and everything he could learn about them, since he was a child.  And that fascination has been turned into a career.

In the '70s, Sparks accepted a position at the Havana, Illinois field station along the Illinois River.  Now as director of research for the NGRREC, his research projects are conducted so as to gain an understanding of how large rivers work.

Sparks is also responsible for putting together research proposals to such agencies as the U.S. EPA, and the National Science Foundation.  He also administrates the the competitive seed grant program, in hopes that small proposals will blossom into larger research projects..............

 Hi Bill,

I wanted to send you a few pics that were taken yesterday, Nov. 24, 2007. The skiing pics were taken in Snake Chute, and the boat pic was taken down at the Grafton marina. Pictured are my son Zac and our friend Caroline. They braved the 44 degree water yesterday for a ski run or two. Susie skiied a quick run as well, but no pictures of her!

Went to Grafton for some hot chocolate afterwards.

Another day on the river!

According to a news report from fox2now.com.............  The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced that they intend to prevent agricultural runoff originating in 41 watersheds, spanning twelve states, from entering the Mississippi River.

The runoff causes high nutrient and sediment levels in the river, causing areas of low oxygen in the Gulf of Mexico, referred to as "the dead zone".

The USDA is focusing on 12 states, including Missouri and Illinois, and has $320 million in funding for farmers that wish to slow down runoff............

Fountain Powerboats Update

    Reggie Reveals Reorganization Plan...........

According to a news report from tradeonlytoday.com............. The reorganization plan for Fountain Powerboat Industries will divide claims against the company into nine classes, and stipulates that the "allowed unsecured claims" will receive a portion of $1 million in full satisfaction of those claims.

Fountain stated that even though the plan offers the unsecured creditors less than full payment, the debtors believe that this distribution is considerably better than what could be gained through an orderly, or forced liquidation of Fountain Powerboat Industries.

After reorganization, Fountain Powerboat Industries will continue to operate as a boatbuilder, with a number of measures in place to improve profitability, while preventing another financial crisis.  Under this plan, Reggie Fountain will remain as president of the company.............

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Update ......Corps Monitoring Seepage Along Metro East Levees

According to a news article from thetelegraph.com...............  Geotechnical engineers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers returned to the wetlands along the River Heritage Parkway, to glean more data on the pressure creating under seepage at the Wood River Levee.

The engineers are gathering readings from eight piezometers, that measure water pressure.  The piezometers take a reading every four hours, and are connected to a hand-held logger.

During normal water level conditions, engineers will visit the wetlands weekly, but when the water levels rise, they will check the meters daily, as well as make visual inspections of boils and seepage areas............

Suit Filed To Halt Grazing Along Upper Missouri River...............

In a news report from greatfallstribune.com.............  An Idaho based environmental group, and two canoe guides have filed suit to ban 10,000 cattle from grazing along a 150 mile stretch of the Missouri River.  The land is located in the 586 square mile Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument.

The suit claims that the cattle are damaging the monument's recreational opportunities.

The cattle producers responded that they are using the land responsibly, with the proper permits from federal Bureau of Land Management, and that this litigation may force them to go out of business............

Rehab Projects Moving Forward At Riverlands Sanctuary..................

According to a news report from thetelegraph.com..............  With the help of $4,377,613 in federal stimulus money, the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary is getting several improvement projects under way.  The Sanctuary flanks both sides of the Clark Bridge, on the Missouri bank of the Mississippi River.

The work is to be completed in two stages, starting with improvements at the Lincoln Shields Recreation Area on the west side of the bridge.  Crews cleaned out trails to better allow access to the River for shore fishing, and demolished the deteriorated restroom facilities, in anticipation of installing new facilities.

Other projects will include revamped railings, and hopefully some repair work on the confederate prisoner obelisk.  The monument was dedicated in 2002, in memory of those prisoners that died of smallpox.

Stage two will focus on the construction of the Riverlands Sanctuary Orientation Center, next to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Riverlands Demonstration Area  It is expected that some minor, general construction work beginning in December, with footing to be installed at a later time.............

According to a news article from wwwltv.com............  State Officials from Louisiana are pressuring the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to stop dumping sediment they dredge from the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico, and instead use it to reconstruct Louisiana's eroded wetlands.

State officials assert that the Corps is wasting up to 20 million cubic yards of dredged material annually, and that up to 10 square miles of wetlands could be built with that sediment

The Corps responded that over the past twenty years, they have created 25,000 acres of wetlands with dredged sediment............

New York's Life Jacket Law 1

NEW YORK--Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Mike Canamella, from Coast Guard Station Kings Point, N.Y., fills out a form during a safety boarding on a recreational boat in Long Island Sound, N.Y., Nov. 21, 2009. Boarding teams from the Coast Guard and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation conducted educational outreach to recreational boaters with boats 21-feet and under in length regarding a new, New York State law, which says that each boater on board must be wearing a life jacket while underway during the winter months. The change in the state boating law was enacted in November of 2009 after a rash of incidents resulting in fatalities with boaters who were not actually wearing their life jacket. Just having a personal flotation device accessible while underway is not enough; life jackets must be worn.

The Picture of the Day ..... was sent to us by Capt'n Chuck Britton, who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis.  Chuck sent us this pic back in July and it never got posted.... so here it is !

River Bill,

Here is a picture of our trip down to the Arch on Monday July 13th. We left the Yacht Club of St. Louis at approximately 9am and ventured down river with our close friends whom were visiting from Terre Haute, IN. During the trip we passed through 2 locks and had great water conditions which made for a fantastic boat ride. We dropped anchor under the Arch, had lunch and enjoyed the scenery as downtown was busy with All Star game activities. All in all it was a great day minus long delays at the Mel Prices lock due to barge traffic.

Alton, IL

Mayor is Concerned About Levee Safety......

According to a news report from AltonDailyNews.com............  Alton's mayor isn't planning to "wait and see" if Alton's damaged levee will hold back the next flood. He is actively seeking support to get the levee repaired.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that they were watching a significant sand boil near the Mel Price Lock and Dam last week.  The sand boil is located just up-river from the dam. This levee holds the river back for about $ 350,000,000  worth of commercial and residential property.

This "emergency" fix would be paid for by federal funds and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will have to request money from the US Congress......
