14 MM Branson,Mo The operator was docking the vessel as a passenger stepped in, causing the boat to tilt to its starboard side and begin to take on water causing it to capsize. Both passengers stayed with the boat as it drifted down to another dock where they were both retrieved from the water with no injuries and evaluated by EMS

Bend, both for passenger service and
commercial shipping, including orchard
products, sheep and other livestock. The
first Cape Girardeau sank near St. Genevieve
in 1910. A new boat was built at
Jeffersonville, Ind. It would be named
Spread Eagle and the existing boat of that
name would be re-christened Cape Girardeau
by the Eagle Packet Co. This scene shows the

We came across a news story listing the 7 man-made wonders of Missouri. At the top of the list was the 630 foot tall St. Louis Gateway Arch and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, Table Rock Lake came in second, which is named for Table Rock Mountain, the original site of the dam. That site was deemed unsuitable, and the construction site was re-located. The name stuck, however. Coming in at number six is the Lake of the Ozarks. The Lake was at one time the largest man-made lake in the world........

Two Tows Collide, Mississippi River Closed........
Around midnight Tuesday, The 184 foot towing vessel, the Hank Tulodzieski collided with the 81 foot towboat Tiny Sanderson near St. Joseph, Louisiana. THe accident cause the sinking of a barge laden with scrap steel, and a barge carrying Petroleum Coke was set adrift, and later recovered. There were no injuries reported and the U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the collision........

Midday Tuesday, the Mississippi River was re-opened after the Coast Guard determined that the sunken barge was not a hazard to navigation. The collision was at mile marker 406, and the River was closed from mile markers 407 and 397........

The River Is Up To The Flood Gates As Of Sunday........
The Mississippi River at St. Louis is up to the flood gates, and has forced the closure of the President Casino. At this point, the Mississippi is at 2 1/2 feet above flood stage. Tourists in town for the NCAA Sweet Sixteen playoffs came into town, and discovered water where Lenoir K. Sullivan Boulevard should be. Up in Alton, Illinois, the Mississippi River is over 5 feet above flood stage. The Corps is making an effort to stop leakage under the levee, by adding water to the land side of the levee. This would in effect "equalize" water pressure, minimizing the leakage........

April Rains Make Or Break Flood Chances........
It is entirely possible that St. Louis area rivers have reached their highest levels for the spring flooding season. However, that is entirely dependant of the amount of rain received during April. The National Weather Service's Mark Fuchs stated that places like Winfield and Grafton are seeing moderate flooding, meaning properties are surrounded by water, and some roads are covered. He further stated that the Rivers have crested, and no rain is in the forecast for the next several days........

Six Weeks Of Searching Net No Asian Carp........
Officials stated that six weeks of searching for Asian carp has turned up none of the maligned fish indicated that few, if any eluded the electric barriers intended to block their path. The Operation found over 1,000 common carp, over 1,000 gizzard shad amongst other species, but no silver of bighead carp. This means that if any had made it past the barrier, they are in very low numbers. The effectiveness of the barrier is the key to the debate of to close, or not to close the Chicago area locks........

Russia Uses Bombers To Break Up Ice Dams........
According to a news article from strategypage.com........ The Russian air force has been mobilized to Siberia, where they will battle a foe familiar to those living in the Mississippi River Valley. Ice dams.
Ice dams are formed when ice melts, and then breaks up, causing water to build up behind the ice. When rising temperatures arrive to melt the ice, dangerous floods are caused by the onrushing surge.
The northern portions of Russia are patrolled by air, in an effort to seek out forming ice dams. For the most part, helicopters deliver explosive charges to blast the dams. However, when the number of ice dams is great, or when helicopter-delivered explosives are ineffective, the Russian air force is called in to bomb the dams. Sometimes, nearby Russian artillery units will be called upon to shell the dams........

News Release N07100013 Capsizing - Stockton - 103/27/2010 Location:
North Cedar Ridge Ramp, Stockton, Mo A father and son from Springfield, MO are reported missing after their utility boat was found capsized on Stockton lake. According to reports the father and son were previously seen leaving a campground area by boat before the vessel was discovered. A search was conducted throughout the area by officers with no results. On the morning of 03/28 the Missouri State Highway Patrol was called in to assist with the air search, While Water Patrol officers continued to conduct a search of the area.

"Rollin' On The River" Is New Sculpture At LCCC........
According to a news report from thetelegraph.com........ The Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey recently installed a sculpture they had commissioned from New York artist, Joel Perlman. It is named "Rollin' On The River", and honors the region.
Perlman stated that while visiting the LCCC campus, he was overwhelmed by the majesty and power of the River. He also acknowledged that the Mississippi River was the starting point for Lewis and Clark, and Tina Turner was also an inspiration for the title of the piece.
The sculpture was funded by private donations in addition to the LCCC Foundation. Olin Brass contributed the bronze for the two-plus ton sculpture, while Scott and Laurie Adams chipped in the 23,000 pound limestone base........

High Water Closes The Casino........
The President Casino, located aboard the Riverboat Admiral, is temporarily closed due to the rising Mississippi River. Management states that the Casino will re-open after the River levels fall, and crews are able to clean up the debris. The President will be closing for good this summer, as parent company, Pinnacle Entertainment has agreed to give up the gaming license no later than July 1, 2010........

Possible Floods Prompt Meeting In New Madrid........
Even though concerns of a flooding Mississippi River have calmed down a little bit, a meeting slated for Tuesday will commence. The meeting will bring together representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the State Emergency Management Agency, the Red Cross and local county commissioners and emergency management directors. U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson called the meeting to address flooding fears brought on by large amounts of melting snow, in addition to the Corps spring pulses into the Missouri River........

On March 29, 1969, a tug pushed an odd vessel along side the Admiral Riverboat, a replica of the Santa Maria. Former St. Louis Mayor, Alfonso J. Cervantes acquired the vessel in a bidding war with the Rockefellers, in an effort to recall the Spanish history of St. Louis. The Santa Maria did not fit in well with the rest of the Riverfront, and quickly became the punch-line of many jokes. On July 28, 1969, a storm broke loose the Santa Maria and the Becky Thatcher from their moorings sending them drifting downstream and into an Illinois dock. The Santa Maria was damaged on her starboard side, and subsequently sank. The Becky's 100 passengers were saved. The Santa Maria was raised and repaired. She found a new home in Titusville, Florida during March of 1973, however she was gutted by a fire in 1974........

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers taking measures against high water at Wood
River Levee adjacent to Melvin Price Locks and Dam
St. Louis – Saturday, March 27 – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis
District announced today, interim steps to counter high Mississippi River
impacts on the Wood River Levee in the immediate vicinity of the Melvin
Price Locks and Dam, south of Alton, IL. The steps are deemed necessary to
reduce risks to public safety for the area protected by the levee.
That meeting included St. Louis District, Mississippi Valley Division and
Corps of Engineers Headquarters representatives. At the meeting, the
engineers reported uncontrolled water underseepage in the ponding area east
of Highway 143, adjacent to the Melvin Price Locks and Dam. They told the
assembled experts that they had observed unexpected small sand boils, which
were not predicted to occur at the normal 419 foot Mississippi River
elevation in the pool above the Mel Price Locks and Dam. –30 –

Scheduled Maintenance Pushes Back Start Of Shipping On Upper Mississippi
Although the ice has nearly vanished from Lake Pepin, Minnesota, the shipping season will be on hold for the Upper Mississippi River due to scheduled maintenance being performed at Lock and Dam No.25, located at Winfield, Missouri. The lock is expected to re-open on April 4, 2010.
March 17 was the average date that that the season's first tow reached Lock and Dam No.4 at Alma, Wisconsin.
The earliest a tow made it to Lock and Dam No.4 was March 3, 1983
The latest was May 9, 2001. The delay was caused by severe flooding........

Lock and Dam No.25 at Winfield, Missouri is located close to mile marker 241.4, and consists of three roller gated, and 14 tainter gates. The main lock is 110 feet by 600 feet. The Lock and Dam was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004........

Lock and Dam No.4 at Alma, Wisconsin is located close to mile marker 752.8. It has six roller gates, and 22 tainter gates. Its lock chamber measures 110 feet by 600 feet. Missouri is anticipating close to $ 21 million this fiscal year garnered from a federal excise tax on firearms, ammunition, archery equipment, fishing gear and marine engine fuels. Missouri has used the federal funds to fund fish and wildlife conservation efforts including the restoration of game animals and the purchase of land for outdoor recreation. Sea Hunt Boosting Production........
Sea Hunt has announced that they are having to ramp up production and add employees to meet dealer demands. The production increase went from 20 boats per week to 25 per week. The Sea Hunt Boat Company was founded in 1995 with a father and son building center console fishing boats in a one room shop. The company had expanded into a small production plant in 2004, and by 2006, Sea Hunts were being constructed in a 170,000 square foot factory........

I -70 stretch In St. Louis To Be Re-Named For Mark Twain........
Friday, the Missouri state Senate voted unanimously to change the name of the portion of I-70 named for Mark McGwire to Mark Twain. The highway was named to honor McGwire's 70 home run season in 1998. Lawmakers have been pressured to change the name of the highway since McGwire's steroid scandal. The bill is headed to the Missouri House will rename the highway to honor Hannibal, Missouri native, author Mark Twain........

The pumps will be located near the Diversion Channel........

The reconstruction of the Taum Sauk reservoir is on schedule according to the owner of the property, AmrenU.E. This reservoir was breached in January of 2005, releasing over 1 billion gallons of water through Johnson's Shut-ins and into the Black River. Amren had settled with the state for $180 million. At this ime, Amren has begun to pump water back into the new dam on February 14, 2005. Amren is seeking approval from the government in order to obtain approval to restore the power generation plant to service........

Missouri River Near Brunswick, Missouri First Shipment of Ag Supplies Make It To Brunswick........
The Missouri River shipping season's first journey was completed with the off-loading the fertilizer. After the fertilizer is removed, the barges are re-loaded with a shipment of grain. The grain will make it to the Gulf of Mexico, via St. Louis. The high waters had delayed the barge's arrival tome. Instead of making the normal 40-50 miles per day, the barges were only able to eek out 10 miles per day........

The Mississippi River Seems To Be Receding........
The level of the Mississippi River has been falling from the riverfronts of Hannibal, Louisiana, and Saverton, Missouri. As of 1 pm Thursday, the River level at Hannibal was 20.03 feet, a 0.05 foot decrease. In Louisiana, MO., the level dipped only 0.01 feet to 19.14 feet and at Saverton, the Mississippi fell 0.04 feet to 19.34 feet. Clarksville, MO. is a different story, as the river is rising to 29.44 feet, an increase of 0.02 feet over the past 24 hours. Hannibal's forecast is that the River levels will remain fairly static through Saturday prior to falling steadily throughout the next week........

Web-Based Flood Control Protest Underway........
According to a news article from hannibal.net........ A new website, www.lowerlands.com. has been set up to request signatures opposed to the levee raising proposal, Plan H. The layout of Plan H is that the majority of 140 Mississippi River levees get raised to 500-year flood standards.
Of the nearly 20 levees that will not be raised under Plan H, the majority of them are in Pike and Lincoln counties in Missouri. Opponents fear that the raising of levees upstream, while not addressing those downstream will bring about a greater flooding risk to the downstream regions.
Mike Klinger supports Plan H and is a Quincy engineer as well as a member of the Upper Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri Rivers Association. He stated that the purpose of Plan H is to leave no area in worse shape than it is now, and to grant levee districts room to improve........

The 2010 IceBreaker at the Embassy Suites was a great
time! Congrats to Fleet Captain Scotty and First Mate
Lisa on putting together a great Pub Crawl on Friday
night and then a terrific party on Saturday night. Good
food, drink, fun and friends enjoyed the music of the
Rail Band and then the party continued in the
Hospitality Room until the wee hours of the morning.

While Trolling the Internet........
We dredged up a photo of a southbound tow tied off to the shore adjacent to the Great River Road near Godfrey, Illinois. Apparently, when the River gets close to the 30 foot flood stage at St. Louis, Missouri, barge traffic gets shut down at night, and will resume in the daylight hours........
