Hi Bill

Alton Marina crew hooked up on Weber Lake for Memorial Day fun

Ended up with 15 boats anchored out and having a great time!

Weber Lake is behind an island that sits just about half mile up river from Longshots, great place to anchor out.  Don't know if its an official name, that's what John Rucker (Who's Your Daddy) calls it.

Bystanders To The Rescue Of Boaters Overcome By Carbon Monoxide........

While over-nighting on Iowa Island, a boater awoke to discover his wife and two children unresponsive.  The family had fallen victim to carbon monoxide.  Luckily, a nearby boater was able to respond with his own oxygen canisters to assist with reviving the family.   Missouri State Water Patrol Officer Lou Amighetti stated that the fast response of bystanders most likely saved the family's lives.  Officer Amighetti further asserted that this incident should serve as a reminder that boaters should not only have life jackets on their boats, but smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as well........

Locking Through

Bill,
Now that the boating season is in full swing. Just a thought that boats using the locks should remember the PFD's mandatory when making the lock.

Also, they must catch lines when in the chamber.

This for your safety when in the locks.

Have a safe season on the water.

BP Scrambles To Implement Newest  Plan to Plug Leak........

In light of BP's latest failure to stem the flow of oil from the blown out Deepwater Horizon wellhead, they are scurrying to execute the latest attempt to control the leak.  The plan has shifted to containment, as BP will try putting a cap over the leak to capture most of the leak.  Officials are concerned that the leak may in fact increase temporarily when the cap is placed.  At this point, sealing the leak will only occur after two relief wells are completed in August........

Project Improves Upper Mississippi River Habitat........

Thanks to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, fish and turtles will be able to swim and bask under much nicer conditions this summer.  The Corps intends to remove small trees and shrubs along the Upper Mississippi River near Buffalo City, Wisconsin, in order to improve access to their nesting sites.  The Corps will also dredge backwaters, in order to improve the quality of "winter homes" for fish.  The project will begin in June, and continue through the fall........

Alton Water Ski and Wakeboard Club......

The Alton Water Ski and Wakeboard Club is having a carwash/fundraiser this Saturday 5-29-2010 at Clifton Terrace Park. We will have food available.

The dock will be in, the clubhouse will be open and we will have boats on the water so I guess we could call it an open house and put it on the community calendar. The club has a lot of new members and we plan to put the jump back in the river this year and do some ski shows. We want to increase our membership for both recreation and show skiing on the river and at area lakes.

The club has a lot to offer including two boats, a clubhouse, private beach and boat ramp. The cost for a single membership is only 75.00.

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 174
05/28/2010

 Daily stats
Start: 6:00 AM - Ocean City, NJ
Finish: 1:00 PM - near Beach Haven, NJ
Time: 7:00 hours
Daily dist: 23 miles
Total dist: 3500+ miles
Companions: None
Weather: Pleasant, partly cloudy - 70 deg. - east wind 5-10+
Notes: A shorter than normal day that almost became a longer than normal day.
Today was the first of five, shorter than average, days that are to come between Ocean City, NJ and New York. By the number and location of available places to camp or stay and the nature of the route I‘ve chosen, my normal eight hour thirty miles per day routine won’t work in this area. After grinding out several longer than normal days over the last week I can’t say I mind taking it easy a bit. When I got on the water this morning and bid the Bay Cats’ dock farewell I was happy to only have 22 miles and about six hours of paddling to do before I could sit back and relax a bit......       This picture is of a   WW II Submarine  that is on display at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI.    The city of  Manitowoc and the museum are both located on the shores of Lake Michigan.  The connection they have to the Mississippi River is that submarines were built in  Manitowoc during  WW II, loaded on floating dry docks and transported down the Illinois River and then the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks for the picture and interesting story Dave.

National Mississippi River Museum And Aquarium Update

Large-Format Cinema Screen To Screen 3-D Films Under Construction....

The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium is currently undergoing an expansion, and the latest project to be tackled is the 40 foot wide, 22 foot tall 3-D cinema.  Actually, the large format cinema will play films in 4-D, which means that effects such as vibrating seats, spritzing water and smells will be included.  Next week, projectors and wiring will be installed, and in mid-June, crews anticipate installing carpet and seating.  The construction is expected to be complete for the cinema opening on June 26.  The first films to be screened there are "Turtle Vision" and Sharks 3-D........

Alton Water Ski and Wakeboard Club

Large-Format Cinema Screen To Screen 3-D Films Under Construction....

Thanks a lot.

     E. Coli.... Public Beach No. 1 Closed, No. 2 Open........

Although E. Coli levels at Public Beach No. 1 were below the maximum allowed, the beach will remain closed because the geometric mean, (a weighted average) of the past two weeks samples is above standards set by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.  Thankfully, Public Beach No. 2 has tested clean and will be open for the Memorial Day weekend.  The Truman State Park Day Use Beach and the Mark Twain State Park Public Beach will be closed over Memorial Day Weekend due to the high levels of E. Coli........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 173
05/27/2010

Daily stats
Start: 6:30 AM - Avalon, NJ
Finish: 11:30 AM - Ocean City, NJ
Time: 5:00
Daily dist: 16 miles
Total dist: 3500+ miles
Companions: None
Weather: Big head winds out of the NE, cloudy and chilly in the AM but nice later Notes: Got a lucky break and a great place to camp
My early starts lately (typ. 5:30 AM launch times) are designed to help me try to get as many miles in as I can before the wind builds. This morning at 4:00 AM I woke to the sound of my tent snapping in the wind. I’d already lost the race with the wind so I rolled back over and got another hour of sleep. My plan for the day was to put in about 32 miles to try to reach some spoil islands behind Atlantic City. The wind and tides had other plans for me..... Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Update

    Proposed Sand Berm Earns Approval........

A proposal to construct a six foot tall sand berm south of Scofield Island, and west of the mouth of the Mississippi River has been approved by Admiral Thad Allen.  This berm is one of six oil barriers proposed by Louisiana, but the only one approved.  Allen stated that the berm will be used as a feasibility study, in that if it is successful, Allen would consider approving construction of other barriers.  Louisiana Governor, Bobby Jindal commended the decision to construct the berm, but stated that it doesn't go far enough........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 172
05/26/2010

It was a great day that ran much longer than I expected. I'm already dozing off so I'm going to make this post quick then get to bed for some much needed rest. I'll fill in the gaps tomorrow.

The ferry that would eventually take Rick and Hank back across the bay. Mid crossing in stil mirror smooth water
I got a very early start and paddled down the beach a couple miles to catch up with Rick and Hank who drove down from the Baltimore area to do the crossing of the Delaware Bay with me. The weather was good as you could imagine and we made it nearly all the way across the bay on almost mirror smooth water. We arrived on the New Jersey side by about 10:00 then paddled another five miles up the East shore and came in the Cape May inlet. From there Rick and Hank paddled south down a canal to catch a ferry back across the bay. Meanwhile I turned and paddled north in search of high ground on which to camp and to put a few more miles in. The least I can say is that the search for high camp-able land was a bit of a challenge but came out good in the end. .... Click on Daily Blog  http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 25, 2010

 Chris McCloud 217-299-7128
   Ashley Spratt 612-247-2976

Fish Sampling Operation Complete on Little Calumet River
Safety zone rescinded; waterway reopened to commercial and recreational traffic

Chicago, IL- The Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (RCC) wrapped
up a successful sampling and data collection operation on the Little Calumet
River in South Chicago on Tuesday.

Fisheries biologists from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources
(IDNR), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and other supporting
agencies collected just over 100,000 pounds of fish during the week-long
operation. Over 40 species of fish were collected, though no Bighead or
Silver Asian carp were found.

“We will now look at the entire body of evidence collected thus far,
including eDNA sampling results and all of our conventional sampling with
nets and electrofishing gear to see if we can draw any further conclusions
about the risk of invasion and establishment of Asian carp in Lake Michigan
through the Chicago Area Waterway System,” said RCC co-chair John
Rogner.

"This operation could not have succeeded without the support, patience and
cooperation of the waterway operators, marina owners, recreational
boaters and other boating and transportation representatives that use this
waterway," said Charlie Wooley, Deputy Regional Director of the U.S Fish
and Wildlife Service Midwest Region. "I would like to thank all of these
industry members for working with us in our mission to protect the Great
Lakes."

The safety zone restrictions established on the Calumet River and Little
Calumet River between mile marker 321.5 and 326.5 have been lifted by the
U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port. All vessels in immediate queue above
and below the O'Brien Lock are requested to contact the Coast Guard COTP
representative on VHF Channel 16 or the Lockmaster at 773-646-2183 to
coordinate vessel transit. Once the vessel queue is cleared, the queue will
then be opened for routine vessel transit.
Environmental consulting company SET Inc., will remain in the area for the
next few days to remove any fish that surface.

While the public can now access the river for fishing and other recreational
purposes, dead fish should NOT be consumed in any circumstance.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) removed a number of
sport fish before this week’s Rotenone treatment and relocated them
outside the treatment zone. IDNR fisheries will restock the area with a
variety of sport fish species in the future.
Over 250 people from more than 20 local, state and federal agencies
contributed to the sampling and data collection efforts.

The RCC would like to thank the Forrest Preserve District of Cook County,
Sunset Bay Marina and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for allowing access
to their respective properties during the operation.

Photographs and b-roll footage from the operation are available to the
media and public at the U.S. Coast Guard’s Visual Information Gallery at
http://cgvi.uscg.mil/media/main.php.

Further information on the Asian Carp RCC and Asian carp control efforts

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Update

"Top Kill" Plug.... So Far, So Good....

BP began pumping heavy mud into the leaking well on Wednesday, in an effort to halt the flow of oil from the blown out well head.  [BP] chief executive Tony Hayward stated that at this time, it would take at least 24 hours to know if the "top kill" effort is successful.  This method of shutting down a blown out well head has been successful on the surface, however, it has never been attempted 5,000 feet below the sea.  BP officials are giving the "top kill" effort a 60-70% chance of actually working........

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Impact

Cleaning Station Station Used For First Time For Tanker........

Tuesday, a tanker bound for the Lower Mississippi River utilized a "decontamination" station after encountering the oil spill while underway.  The cleaning station is really 2 workboats equipped with fire hoses.  Although cleaning stations have been set up for a few weeks now, the first one used was about 4 miles from the Southwest Pass entrance to the Mississippi River.  New Orleans port officials state that shipping traffic on the Mississippi River remains normal........

    Boaters Encouraged To Be Careful........

With higher water levels, stronger currents and submerged objects, boaters are urged to use caution when hitting waterways this upcoming Memorial Day weekend.  Rivers are expected to fall below flood stage by the weekend, but likely be above normal.  Cpl.      Hungry?  Don't Eat Raw Crayfish........

When you are spending some time on the River, and find yourself in need of a snack, make sure you do not eat raw crayfish.  Apparently, the crayfish can carry a rare parasitic worm, that when ingested, can migrate into the lungs and even the brain.  So far, Missouri has had 6 cases of people infected with the worm, bringing the North American total to 13.  One of the six victims was a teen from Florissant, Missouri.  For several months, doctors were unable to figure out what was wrong with him........

Missouri River Barge Traffic May Not Improve After Drought........

Historic trends indicate that with the end of the drought that plagued the Missouri River Valley for the better part of a decade, that barge shipping will not rebound as many expect.  With each consecutive drought, the barge traffic has increasingly dropped off, never to recover to previous levels.  Earlier this year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that the Missouri River would have a full shipping season, running from April through November.  Although history suggests otherwise, the barge shipping industry believes that the higher water levels, and longer season may breathe new life into barge shipping along the Missouri........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 171 (Happy First Birthday Jonas!)
05/25/2010

Daily stats
Start: 5:30 AM- Ocean City, MD
Finish: 3:00 PM - Lewes, DE
Time: 9:30 Hours
Daily dist: 32 miles
Total dist: 3000+ miles
Companions: None
Weather: NE wind 10 mph high in mid 70’s mostly clear (nice)
Notes: Made much better time on the inside today than I did on the outside yesterday. Nice to be able to hide from the wind.
Today I got smart and ran up the sheltered inside bays and canals rather than spend another long day beating against the wind and waves. Consequently my mileage went way up over yesterday and I had a great time putting in the miles. One very important link in my route today was the Assawoman canal just north of Ocean City. On my charts it shows that it was only a foot and a half deep in 1977 (old charts I guess). Being that shallow I wasn’t sure the canal would be passable. Thankfully I was able to call my brother Luke the other day and he checked into it for me and learned that it is presently being dredged. He also read some blog posts from people that said they’d run the four mile canal on jet skis and in shallow draft pontoon boats. With that info I was feeling good about giving it a try. When I got to the jet ski rental place yesterday I asked them about the canal and they said it was indeed passable for something like a kayak.

     Bagnell Dam Floodgates Opened........

Dam operators at Bagnell Dam have opened up the floodgates in order to accommodate the increased water flow being released upstream by the Truman Dam.  As a result, landowners along the Osage River should be expecting a considerable swell over the next several days.  Over the past 3 weeks, the water elevation at Truman Lake had risen from 710 to 722 feet.  The Lake of the Ozarks had peaked close to full pool at 659.17 feet on May 17, 2010.  AmrenU.E. wants to maintain the elevation throughout the Memorial Day weekend........

The Osage River is a tributary of the Missouri River, and was transformed into a chain of two reservoirs with the construction of the Bagnell Dam, creating Lake of the Ozarks, and then later the Truman dam was added upstream, creating the Harry S Truman Reservoir........
