Mississippi Queen Update

   Mississippi Queen Is Being Dismantled.........

After decaying along a wharf since 2006, the once proud paddlewheeler, the Mississippi Queen, is being salvaged for her machinery.  The vessel's hull may be saved, as the steel is so thick.  The Queen was constructed during the early '70s for $27 million.  She had 5 decks, containing 207 cabins, and underwent a multi-million dollar make-over in 1989 that added some modern touches including a spa pool. One item that does not have a date with the scrap pile is the Queen's 700 lb bell.  The bell was donated to the Howard Steamboat Museum located in Jeffersonville, Indiana, where the Queen was constructed by Jeff Boat between 1973 and 1975........

Mississippi River At Burlington, Iowa

A Man Was Hit By Lightning At Steamboat Days.........

Around midnight on Friday, a man was hit by lightning in the Burlington Steamboat Days complex.  Ambulance crews and Burlington police responded, as did reinforcements from Danville, and the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.  The man's condition was not reported.  Following the lightning strike, rescue workers provided assistance to a woman who was hyperventilating.  While all of this was going on, a man fell into the Mississippi River, but was able to swim to shore.  He was seen fleeing the scene........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 195
06/18/2010

Daily stats
Start: 5:30 AM - Hudson River Island State Park - Near Colombiaville, NY
Finish: 3:00 PM - Entrance to the Erie Canal - Troy, NY
Time: 9:30 Hours
Daily dist: 30 miles
Total dist: 3600+ miles
Companions: Bill Quick, Alan, and John
Weather: Very calm, hot, and sunny
Notes: Locked through at the Troy Lock leaving “sea level” for the first time since locking into the Industrial Canal in New Orleans last January.
With 30 miles to cover during the day, much of it upstream against the last of any tidal current I will see on this trip, Bill and I got an early start on the water. We were rewarded for the early start by a couple hours of the end of the incoming tide and absolutely mirror smooth water shrouded in morning mist.

A Big Fish Story

A South Dakota Fish Takes A Trip....  To Kentucky....

Recently, the State Game, Fish and Parks Department fisheries biologists at Chamberlain, South Dakota received a call from a fisherman in Kentucky, stating that he caught a fish.  And that fish happened to have a South Dakota jaw tag.  A GF&P biologist, Jason Sorensen stated that the fish travel rather far distances, depending on the water conditions. The U.S. GS states that the paddlefish are one of the largest freshwater fishes that live in North America.  Sorensen stated that the GF&P tags the fish primarily to observe angler exploitation rates, but biologists use the information to track fish movements........

Blessing of the Fleet...

Amateur Videographers to record Blessing of the Fleet

Bill:

As you know, the Blessing of the Fleet is largely a work of love with many people donating their time.

I'm looking for few volunteers to videotape the Blessing of the Fleet from different vantage points.

Ideally , these folks would have newer, digital cameras that use digital tape. (as opposed to recording onto a DVD. They can record directly onto a hard drive but then would need to bring the camera to the computer for which we'd edit.. Tape is really preferred.)

They should also have a tripod, or have access to one) although if they are really steady (or drunk), it might do.

My plan is to have someone video tape from the shrine (tripod needed), from a boat , from Palisades Yacht Club upper deck, and, perhaps from a plane (no tripod needed there!) Don't know if I've secured a plane ride yet.

I'll "coach 'em up" about what to shoot and give them any tips they need.

They'll need to provide the tape and turn them over to me so I can edit them. I'll try to return the tapes but there are no guarantees as I don't personally do the editing.

If you could post this on your site, I'd appreciate it.

Lower Mississippi River

Experts Suggest Diverting The Mississippi River To Combat Oil Slick........

Experts are working on ways to prevent oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill from reaching the shores, and some are suggesting the use of the Mississippi River as a tool.  Upstream of the mouth of the Mississippi River lies a fork, at the Atchafalaya River, that through man made water flow diversions directs 30% of the Mississippi River's flow down the Atchafalaya River.  The experts believe that by shifting more of the Mississippi River's flow down the main channel, the extra fresh water could in fact keep the oil slick out of sensitive marshlands........

The Atchafalaya River

is a tributary of the Red and Mississippi Rivers, and is an important industrial shipping channel for Louisiana.  The Atchafalaya River empties into the Gulf of Mexico in Atchafalaya Bay, which thanks to the new delta forming in the bay, is the only portion of the Louisiana coastline that is growing........

Flash Floods

CSI: Arkansas.... Looking For Flash Flooding Clues....

Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey are using hydrologic forensics to re-construct the Arkansas flash flood on the Little Missouri River in order to formulate better predictive models.  By taking the predictive models, and comparing them to historical records, scientists are better able to predict just how often floods will occur.  With this knowledge, communities will better be able to determine whether to require higher elevations for construction, warning systems or other flood control works.   The USGS also collects data to assist with day to day decisions related to flood response, recreation, business operations and resource management.........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Boat Catches Fire After Test Drive........

Wednesday afternoon, a Sunrise Beach boat broker took some prospective buyers for a spin aboard a 34 foot 1991 Baja and following the test drive, tied the vessel up at Lighthouse Marina's dock.  After disembarking from the vessel, bystanders noticed black smoke billowing from the Baja's cabin.  The Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District responded with several trucks, and were able to extinguish the blaze.  It is believed that it was an electrical fire, started by the vessel's air conditioning unit........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 194
06/17/20101 Comment(s) Daily stats
Start: 6:00 AM - Esopus Meadows, NY
Finish: 5:15 PM - Hudson River Island State Park, Near Colombiaville, NY
Time: 11:15
Daily dist: 31 miles
Total dist: 3600+ miles
Companions: Bill for the first three hours then solo until he caught up at camp
Weather: Windy - NW 15-20+ temps in the low 70’s mostly cloudy
Notes: Parted ways with Bill on the water so we could paddle at our own pace.
The first and brightest highlight of the day came very early on when Bill grabbed a roll of toilet paper and a short shovel then headed down the trail on a long walk. Moments later he returned with a big smile on his face with the exciting news that he’d discovered a composting toilet (complete with toilet paper and hand sanitizer). I guess us kayak campers are easy to please

Grafton Towboat Festival Cancelled for this Weekend.....

Dredge Potter & MV Pathfinder At Alton This Weekend........

The Grafton Towboat Festival has been "Cancelled"  due to the high water and will not be re-scheduled for this year.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Dredge Potter and Motor Vessel Pathfinder will not dock along Grafton, Illinois seawall this weekend as scheduled either. The vessels are so large, they need at least 2 feet of seawall exposed to have enough room to properly anchor and secure the vessels and the high water levels have brought the Mississippi River to within inches of the top of the seawall at Grafton.

The Dredge Potter will be moored in Alton instead for an on-board open house on Saturday June 26, and Sunday, June 27 at the National Great Rivers Museum, located at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26.  Admission is free, and tours will run from 9 am through 5 pm........

Upper Mississippi River

Hand Soap Pollutant Found In Lake Pepin........

Researchers from the University of Minnesota have discovered dioxins in Mississippi River sediments in in Lake Pepin.  The dioxins are the result of the breakdown of a chemical, triclosan, which is used in the manufacture of antibacterial hand soap.  Triclosan breaks down in water and sunlight, forming pollutants that are accumulating in the environment, even as other forms of dioxins are declining.  Dioxins are one of the causes of fish consumption advisories in Minnesota........

Con Trios Yacht Club Updated

Updated the Con Trios Yacht Club website, www.contriosyachtclub.org as follows:

Added some more photos from the Champagne Brunch by Gary Dill and the Past Commodores Party by Gary Meinershagen. Check the "Photo Galleries" page to see all the pictures. Many Thanks to our members for their photo submissions.

Also updated the Blessing of the Fleet website, http://www.blessingofthefleetstl.com with the 2010 Poster created by Stolze Printing and some photos of the “Gypsy Rose” Pirate Ship. Blessing of the Fleet date is Saturday, July 17th.

Con Trios Yacht Club is again helping sponsor this year’s Blessing of the Fleet with donations of time and money. Several of our Board Members also sit on the Board of the Blessing of the Fleet Inc. This is a perfect marriage of one of the biggest events on the river and one of the larger Yacht Club’s. This year the theme will be “Pirates” and the “Gypsy Rose” Pirate Ship piloted by Captain Tim Woodson will be immediately behind the “Follow Me” boat in the downstream parade. Con Trios Yacht Club’s party at Grafton Harbor will immediately follow the Blessing of the Fleet, co-incidentally the Con Trios party will also feature a “Pirates” theme.

Missouri Public Beaches

Beaches In Six Missouri State Parks Closed For The Weekend........

In addition to Mark Twain State Park Beach, five more Missouri state park beaches will be closed over the weekend, due to high E. coli levels. The closed beaches are Crowder, Cuivre River, St. Joe, Thousand Hills and Wakonda.  Mark Twain was also closed due to high water.  In an effort to provide safe beach experiences, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources closes state park beaches that have a single sample over 235 E.coli colonies per 100 mililiers of water.  These are the same guidelines that the U.S. EPA uses for swimming beaches........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 193
06/16/2010

Daily stats
Start: 7:15 AM - Newburgh, NY
Finish: 3:45 PM - Esopus Meadows, NY
Time: 8:30
Daily dist: 23 miles
Total dist: 3600+ miles
Companions: Bill Quick
Weather: Overcast with one spell of rain for about a half hour temps in the low 70s
Notes: Into fresh water for the rest of the trip.
Knowing that the tide would be working against us for the first six hours of the day, we figured sacrificing one mile per hour of progress was preferable to sitting around in camp until noon waiting for the tide to change. Thus we set out at just after seven this morning and made but steady progress past small river towns with a sprinkling of industry as headed upstream on the outgoing tide.....Click on Daily Blog

Wisconsin Yacht Builders Recall 350 Employees........

As the yacht building business has improved, there has been a need for two Wisconsin based yacht manufacturers to recall some 350 employees.  Carver Yacht Group, which builds Carver and Marquis yacht brands recalled 250 employees, and KCS International, manufacturer of Cruisers and Rampage yachts, has brought back 100 employees.  Together, both companies employ around 500 people, several hundred jobs down from just a few years ago, but a huge improvement over 2009........

Another Manufacturer Warns Of Operating In Gulf Oil Spill........

Steyr Motors is advising that owners of their marine diesel engines should use extra caution when operating in the oil contaminated waters in the Gulf of Mexico.  Steyr does acknowledge that operating in the contaminated waters may not be avoidable, but advises that all Steyr marine diesels be equipped with the new Steyrflush system.  Steyr also suggests inspection or replacement of raw water pump impellers, rubber raw water hoses and seal rings every 50 operating hours........

Temporary "Boats Keeps Out" area to be established on Stockton Lake during power line construction

The Missouri State Water Patrol announces that a temporary “Boats Keep Out” area will be established on Stockton Lake while power lines are being installed across the lake. The restricted boating zone will be in effect June 21-25, 2010 and will include the area between the MO 245 Highway bridge and the power line located near the L-5 mile marker location. During this time, the Capital Electric Company will be installing five power lines across the Little Sac Arm of the lake. While work is underway, boats will not be permitted into the temporary boats keep out area to ensure safety from overhead or floating obstacles. The restricted area will be designated with exclusion buoys and floating “Boats Keep Out” signs.

Boat ramps that could potentially be affected by the restricted area are the Cedar Ridge and High Point boat ramps. Anyone using these ramps during power line work period should take this into consideration when planning a trip.

Canoe Race May Be Called On Account Of Flooding........

The Missouri River is expected to make it to 29.7 feet in the wee hours of Saturday morning.  This may force the cancellation of Saturday's Canoe for Clean Water Race.  An official decision to have the race will be made at noon on Thursday.  The executive director of the Missouri River Communities Network, Steve Johnson, has been in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard who advises that the race be cancelled.  The Coast Guard viewed mile-long collections of debris.  MRCN, who hosts the Canoe for Clean Water Race, stated that they were most likely going to cancel the race........

Upper Mississippi River Conservation

Efforts To Curtail Runoff Have Made Significant Progress........

A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture has found that farmers in the upper Mississippi River basin have made considerable progress in reducing the amount of fertilizer, pesticide and sediment runoff.  The USDA does point out that there is still more more work to be done to drop pollution to acceptable levels.  Close to 51% of the area's crop acres need better controls over nitrogen loss, and about 62% of the overall cropland needs better management to keep the leaching of nitrogen and phosphorous in check.  The good news is that only about 15% of the cultivated areas have excessive sediment losses........

Metro East Levee Update

Price For Levee Repairs Now $170 Million, From $450 Million........

After four months of inspecting levees, the Southwestern Illinois Flood Protection District Council has come up with an estimated cost for repairing 64 miles worth of Metro East Levees.  Between $160 - 170 million.  These figures are quite a bit lower than the $450 million that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had estimated earlier in the year.  Metro East officials believe that they can fund the project, and get the levees accredited by using bonds guaranteed by local sales tax dollars.  Although FEMA was to make a decision on the delaying the implementation of the new flood hazard maps by June 1, they have stated that they need more time........

Gavins Dam At Record Levels, Corps Boosts Flow........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that they have increased the flows from the Gavins Point Dam from 30,000 to 33,000 cubic feet per second, in an effort to prevent water from flowing over the emergency spillway gates.  The Corps' decision leveled out the reservoir's elevation at a record 1,209.7 feet.  This is level is mere inches from the top of the spillway gates.  T
