Pirate Retaliation !

The Picture of the Day ...... is from the most famous pirate of Pool 26 .... the Infamous Capt'n Tim.  Tim sent this picture and "Arrrgh-mail" in retaliation to Little John's pirate threatening e-mail this past weekend....

......and here's what I have to say to Little John:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARH Mateys,

No worries, this isn't our first plunder....be careful when you mess with the pirates of the Gypsy Rose. As for being attacked from above, why do you think we have a crows's nest? Captn Tim says BRING IT ON!!!!   After we pillage and plunder we will keelhole you and toss you in the belly of the ship.

Yoha, from your favorite wench

Martha.

FYI ....Yoha is goodbye in pirate - it's Ahoy backwards!!

Con Trios Pirate Party Update...

    Grafton Harbor

Posted the following on the Con Trios Yacht Club website, www.contriosyachtclub.org and on the webpage formatted for smart phones at http://www.contriosyachtclub.org/news.html

In reference to the Pirate Party coming up next Saturday the 24th at Grafton Harbor:

Notice to all members bringing your boats to Grafton Harbor.

Con Trios has not brought this many boats to an event since the Two Rivers days.
Please plan for a crowded harbor. Bring your own cords, electric adaptors, splitters and anything you can think of.
Remember we are guests so be patient and nice. Every slip and lay along will be used.
The town of Grafton rolls up its sidewalks around 9:00 PM so don’t forget to bring some late night food.
This is going to be a GREAT PARTY!!! Glad to see all the boats coming.

Scott Hickey
Fleet Captain, Con Trios Yacht Club

Mimi Hughes Wrap Up

Ohio River Swim Completed On Saturday........

Saturday afternoon, Mimi Hughes stroked her way from the green waters of the Ohio River into the muddy currents of the Mississippi River at Ft. Defiance, just south of Cairo, Illinois.  Cheers broke out after Hughes popped her head above the surface and asked onlookers how far it was to New Orleans.  Cairo leaders paraded Hughes around town atop a Cairo fire truck.  The truck brought Hughes to the fire house so she could get cleaned up.  Cairo Mayor, Judson Childs, presented Hughes with a key to the city, flowers, a plaque, and to top it all off, an a cappella rendition of "You Are So Beautiful"........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update.......

Day 226
07/19/2010

Daily Stats
Start: 7:30 AM - Marysville, MI
Finish 2:15 PM - Lakeport, MI (Lakeport State Park)
Time: 6:00 hours
Daily dist: 15 miles
Total dist: 4200+
Companions: None
Weather: Mostly cloudy with highs in the 70’s head wind out of the NE at 10+ mph.
Notes: Entered Lake Huron at about 10:00 AM too rough for pictures
For the last three days I’ve been working hard against the persistent flow of first the Detroit River then the St. Clair river with my speed dropping well below my usual average. Today I only had about six miles of upstream paddling remaining on the St. Clair before I would be able to enjoy the “non flowing” water of Lake Huron. Unfortunately easier paddling was just not to be....Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update.......

Day 225
07/18/2010

Day 224
Start: 6:15 AM - Russell Island - Pointe aux Chenes, MI
Finish 2:15 PM - Marysville, MI
Time: 8:00 hours
Daily dist: 17 miles
Total dist: 4200+
Companions: Randy and Joel Orchard
Weather: Partly cloudy with highs in the 980’s wind out of the SW at 10+ mph.
Notes: Less mileage than recent days but all upstream on the St. Clair River.
So far, 4000+ miles into this trip, one thing I’ve amazingly been able to avoid was mosquitoes. It was too cold for them in the famously buggy Everglades and apparently they just weren’t out (or I’ve been lucky) ever since. Lucky, that was, until this morning. It wouldn’t have taken a genius to guess that my camp site would hold a few bugs. After all, I had to push down waste high grass in order to create a flat spot in the only bit of land I could find that would be certain to be above the flood plane if it rained. For those that don’t know around here- tall grass and water = bugs.

US Coast Guard Pic

Isabel Knutsen.......

GALVESTON, Texas - Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Galveston and the Texas General Land Office are preparing to oversee the lightering and salvage of the chemical tanker Isabel Knutsen, a 523-foot ship that ran aground in the southeastern corner of the intersection of the intracoastal waterway (ICW) and the Houston Ship Channel (HSC) Tuesday. The tank ship is carrying approximately 15,183 metric tons of cyclohexane, a solvent often used in the production of nylon, and approximately 663 metric tons of fuel oil. The vessel is currently stable, structurally intact, and not discharging any oil or cargo. Vessel traffic continues as normal on both the HSC and the ICW. Two tugboats unsuccessfully attempted to free the ship this morning, which became stuck after reportedly losing steering just before 6 a.m.

IT IS TIME TO GET SERIOUS

I am sick and tired of you pirates and bad guys scaring our children.
NOW, you are sneaking off with our wives and girlfriends

WE ARE GOING TO PUT A STOP TO THIS ONCE AND FOR GOOD

We are building a cannon that will bring down a ship with one shot.
Unfortunately, it is too big to mount on a boat, and has to be shot from landside.
They did do it that way in the olden days, so theoretically we can make this work.

YOU BAD GUYS HAVE HAD FAIR WARNING, NOW GET OUT

BYE THE WAY, For all you good guys out there.
Keep an eye open up in the air until I figure out how to aim and shoot this thing

   Riverside Harbor.......

Bill,

I just talked to Cathy from Riverside Harbor and she wanted me to let you know that they are open for ramping this weekend.

They have 1 ramp open, the gas dock still will not be open due to the connection still being under water.

The store is open with ice and the employees are waiting to help everyone out getting their boats into the water!

I know everyone is so anxious to be able to get out on the river. We have lost a good part of the boating season and a lot of the harbors are still under water and unable to let boaters ramp. She does ask though, that anyone that is in the back Dardiene Slough be watchful of their wakes as that area is still flooded. It’s time to start enjoying the “ole man River” and have our friends and river family back with us.

Hopefully the river is on the way back into the banks and we can start enjoying what is left of the season.

Let everyone know to come out an support their local harbors and restaurants. It’s been another tough year and we need to get back to

having fun again. Looking forward to seeing everyone out there enjoying our Paradise.

Thanks,

Riverrat Jen Knox

It is anticipated that Mimi Hughes will complete her 981 mile swim down the Ohio River in Cairo, Illinois around 5 pm on Saturday.  Hughes swam the Ohio River to raise awareness of education and economic opportunities for girls and women.  Since beginning her journey on May 22, Hughes has been fighting an eye infection, sore shoulders and nausea.  To top it all off, the Mississippi River is backing up into the Ohio River, possibly giving Hughes a negative current to deal with........

Bones Of A 32 Foot Vessel Found At Ground Zero........

Workers at World Trade Center unearthed a rib of a 32 foot vessel with a back hoe on Tuesday morning.  As the remains are fragile, workers are excavating the vessel by hand.  A 100 lb. anchor was uncovered nearby.  It is not certain if the anchor belongs to the ship.  Authorities believe that in the 18th century, the vessel was used as part of the fill used to extend lower Manhattan out into the Hudson River........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update.......

Day 222 and 223 (quick post)
07/16/2010

It's been a busy two days and it's already way past my bed time so I have to keep this short. Yesterday (Day 222) I had a short day as I paddled in to Stony Point near Monroe MI to stay with Kim Harper from the local paddling club. At dinner Kim and I met up with Ed Webber with whom I am staying tonight. By giving it to Ed to take home with him, I took advantage of the rare opportunity to pass my gear along to my next stop and enjoyed a lighter than normal boat to paddle today.

At about 10:00 this morning (Day 223) I pulled out of Lake Erie after entering it just 11 days ago on July 5th. Almost right away I was faced with the realities of paddling upstream on the Detroit river. Thank goodness I had the ligher boat because my speed was already cut almost in half from what it was on the open lake. It was still a nice paddle and I made it to Bell Isle where Ed was waiting for me at the only sand beach we could find in the Detroit area. While Ed was doing me the huge favor of picing me up, the Detroit Police department was giving him a ticket. The unsympathetic cop wouldn't skip the parking ticket and said he was already doing us a favor by not citing us for landing at that beach without a permit from the parks department. Isn't it great that we have the police force out there keeping us safe.

Tomorrow it's a couple more miles upstream on the Detroit river then across Lake St. Claire and a bit beyond if the weather and time allows. I'll try to fill out the rest of the story for the last two days when I have time.

Public Notices Open For Comment

Posted on the US Army Corps Of Engineers Website.....

P-2764_2765.  The applicant seeks authorization to modify P-2577, by continuing periodic maintenance, but by placing dredged material into the river just outside the harbor entrance at river mile 221.5.  P-2576 previously authorized the expansion of the harbor by digging out a new area 250 feet wide and 300 feet long.  After issuance of the permit, it was revealed that the proposed 250x300 feet would be inadequate to accomplish the project.  Since the applicant could not accomplish the goals of the project as authorized, the applicant never proceeded with the work.  Under P-2564 the applicant now wishes to proceed with the project by altering the original proposal to construct an area 250 feet wide and 480 feet long.  The area, which was authorized to be approximately 1.72 acres in size excavated out of non-jurisdictional areas, is now proposed to be 2.75 acres in size.  This material will still be hauled away to an approved non-wetland site.  The applicant proposes The public notice comment period opens on July 14, 2010 and closes August 04, 2010.

P-2767, MVS-2010-488: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District proposes the completion of design deficiency corrections for the East St. Louis, IL Flood Protection Levee System, also known as the MESD and Chain of Rocks Levee systems. The activities are proposed in accordance with measures recommended by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who believe that the levee system has significant underseepage problems and possible other problems. As such, the Corps cannot certify that the levee system will protect against a 100-year flood. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District Project Management Branch announces the availability of the Design Deficiency Corrections East St. Louis, IL Flood Protection Project Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). The purpose of the EA and FONSI is to present a detailed proposal for the significant underseepage problems and possible other problems along the MESD and the Chain of Rocks levee systems. Seepage under a levee and through a levee can be controlled by a variety of measures. Seepage through the main aquifer under a levee can be controlled by landside relief wells, seepage berms (generally landside), slurry trench cutoff walls (generally near the riverside levee toe or at the levee centerline), and measures to increase the distance between the levee and the point where flood water is introduced to the aquifer. The tentative recommended plan for underseepage and through-seepage controls for a flood at 54 ft on the St. Louis gage (design flood at 52 feet on the St. Louis gage plus 2 feet of freeboard) consists of the lowest cost alternative for most decision segments and new alternatives for certain decision segments that were identified prior to and during a subsequent value-engineering study.

Project Background

  • The Alton to Gale Levee System began as numerous private small levees built during the depression years.

  • During the 1940's and 1950's the Government created the combined system by raising existing levees and building new levees within the newly established levee districts (17 levee districts make up the Alton to Gale Levee System within Illinois and Missouri).

  • All levees have heights ranging between 20 and 25 feet, a crown width of 20 feet and side slopes of 1 vertical on 3 horizontal.

  • Locally available materials were used for construction, which include highly plastic clays.

Metro East Flood Insurance Update

Bill Passed To Delay Mandatory Flood Insurance........

On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that prevents residents of the American Bottoms region from being required to purchase flood insurance for at least 5 years.  The bill halts the requirement for flood insurance purchase for 5 years, and phases in the flood insurance requirement over another 5 years.  The Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council has reason to believe that they can finish repairs to the levees within 5 years, which will negate the need for residents to purchase flood insurance........

Missouri Department of Conservation News

    Catfish Reward Tags

Catfish anglers can collect cash for reporting tagged fish
Few people fish for money, but Missouri catfish
anglers don’t have to turn pro to collect cash rewards.

JEFFERSON CITY–The only thing anglers like as much as fishing is telling fish stories. The Missouri Department of Conservation will pay up to $150 for your story if you catch the right catfish.

In its continuing effort to put catfish management on a firm scientific footing, the Missouri Department of Conservation has tagged thousands of blue and flathead catfish in lakes and streams throughout the state. In years past, those tags carried rewards ranging from $25 to $50 for anglers who reported catching tagged catfish. More recently, the agency upped the ante, offering as much as $150 for some tagged catfish.

Fisheries biologists have long used tagging studies to learn how long fish live, how fast they grow, where they move and other information that is useful in setting fishing seasons and creel limits. However, tagging accomplishes nothing unless anglers report catching tagged fish.

Each time an angler finds a tag and reports it by calling the phone number printed on the tag, fisheries managers get a clearer picture of fish population dynamics. The more data that is gathered, the clearer the picture becomes.

The percentage of tagged fish reported by anglers helps biologists estimate what percentage of the overall fish population is caught by anglers each year. Such estimates are helpful when establishing fishing regulations.

Tag returns from anglers can underestimate the actual harvest, however. Some anglers are glad to report tagged fish in return for information they receive about the fish they caught. For others, however, even a $25 reward is not enough to make a phone call. Determining non-returns is a key part of every fish tagging study. So is estimating the number of non-returns accurately.

To get a better handle on the number of non-returns, the Conservation Department offers a $150 reward for some tags. The assumption is that almost every angler will return a tag for that amount. Comparing the rate of return on $25 and $150 tags will give researchers a good idea what percentage of fish with $25 tags are not reported when anglers catch them.

Conservation Department workers have tagged more than 7,000 flathead and blue catfish that are 12 inches and larger in recent years. The “dangler” reward tags are small plastic ovals attached just under the dorsal fin on the tops of fishes’ backs.

Most of the tags have rewards of $25. The reward amount and the phone number for the angler to call are printed on the tags. Anglers also are asked to report when, where and how they caught each fish, along with its length and whether they kept or released the fish.

Tagged catfish are swimming in parts of the Fabius, Gasconade, Grand, Lamine, Marmaton, Platte, South Grand rivers, the upper Mississippi River near Hannibal and the Missouri River around the mouths of the Platte, Grand, Lamine and Gasconade rivers.

“Anglers don’t have to keep a fish to get the reward,” said Resource Scientist Zach Ford, who oversees the catfish harvest evaluation project. “If they catch a tagged flathead or blue catfish and choose to release it, all they have to do is clip off the tag, call the phone number printed on the tag and mail it in. They will get the reward amount marked on the tag, along with a letter describing when and where the fish was originally tagged. They get the tag back, too. Some people like to have them for keepsakes.”

Weather: Mostly Clear with highs in the low 80s wind out of the north at 5-mph
Notes: Went into nearby marina to meet up with family friends for lunch. Then made camp at 6:00 PM
Apparently a heavily laden kayak heading west toward the main land from Middle Bass Island in the pre-dawn darkness looks a little suspicious to the authorities. With my running light turned on and attached to the back of my PFD and my head lamp shining forward, I was rigged up completely safe and legal for paddling in the dark. Still, just minutes from the beach (much like a deer in the headlights) I found myself stuck in the glare of a patrol boat spotlight as it approached me from behind. At first I thought it was a fishing boat getting and early start but then flashing blue lights told me otherwise. The boat approached me cautiously with the spot light shining the length of my kayak very slowly from front to back then front again....Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Update

    It Appears New Cap Working........

On Thursday, BP announced that their new cap for the blown out oil well has effectively stopped the oil leak.  BP has made many attempts to stem the flow of oil, and has been successful while conducting tests where they closed valves and vents located on the containment cap.  The tests that can take up to 2 days, measures pressures inside the well to gauge it's condition.........

New docking system in Plaquemines Parish ...

VENICE, La. A Vessel of Opportunity airboat captain demonstrates the ease of drive-on docking for the division supervisor and other onlookers in Myrtle Grove July 13, 2010. The newly installed 250-foot-long floating docking system allows airboats to dock overnight and prevents environmental damage caused by airboats stored along the marshland. Additional docking systems are on order for other locations in the area.

Con Trios Yacht Club Update.......

Con Trios Yacht Club Charitable Donations

CTYC sponsors and administers the "Edwin W. Meyer" Safety Endowment Program, providing funds to local boating organizations to help promote safe boating. Previous grand recipients include the Missouri State Water Patrol, Alton Volunteer Emergency Corps, Orchard Farm Fire Department, and the St. Charles County Underwater Rescue and Recovery Force, Wings of Angels and others.

In addition donations have been made to other charitable foundations and organizations either directly related to boating or members of our Con Trios Family. In 2010 Con Trios was able to contribute to three different organizations

Donation requests for 2011 can be applied for by contacting Con Trios Yacht Club's Vice Commodore after January 1st, 2011.

Through Little Johns Motorsports and the St. Louis Drag Boat Association a contribution was made to help sponsor the Drag Boat Races at Creve Coeur Lake in June. The primary charity of this event is Autism Speaks. Con Trios Yacht Club set up our tent to help shade the children next to the Bounce House along with providing a place for our members to view the racing. Past Commodore John Bicknese brought this to the attention of the Board.

A contribution was made to the Blessing of the Fleet Inc. as in the past to help keep the long tradition running. A perfect marriage of one of the largest boating events in the area with one of the largest Yacht Clubs in the area. Many of our Board and Members also assist with the Blessing of the Fleet. Past Commodore Tim Tighe brought this to the attention of the Board.

And finally a contribution was made to the Karen Weidinger Foundation that assists patients with breast cancer. Karen (who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2004), her Father Howard and their extended family have all been longtime members of Con Trios Yacht Club. Past Commodore Sonny Robbins brought this to the attention of the Board.

Former President George H.W. Bush's Boat Runs Aground........

Former President George H.W. Bush can often be found running his 38 foot fishing boat, Fidelity IV, off the coast of Kennebunkport, Maine.  A fog rolled in mid-afternoon, making navigation next to impossible.  Bush's boat got caught up in swells that pushed the vessel onto the beach.  The vessel following the President's boat suffered the same fate.  Luckily, there were no injuries, and neither boat was seriously damaged.  After several hours, Fidelity IV was able to be floated off of the sand........

Analyst Believes Steeper Decline Predicted By Brunswick........

Timothy Conder, an analyst with Wells FargoSecurities, has predicted that Brunswick will state they expect retail boat sales to be down by up to 20% this year, as opposed to the 10% predicted previously.  Brunswick will be releasing their second quarter results on July 29th.  Conder believes that Brunswick will reaffirm that they will return to profitability in 2011, but will do so with a considerable amount of caution........

USACE Pess Release

Regional Team meets in St. Louis to continue flood damage reduction work

July 14, St. Louis - The Nation's first-ever Regional Flood Risk Management
Team (RFRMT) will meet in St. Louis July 15 to discuss the unseasonably high
water levels from consistently heavy rains throughout the Upper Mississippi
River watershed.

The RFRMT is historic both in purpose and composition. It is now fully
chartered with signatory members from five states, including senior flood
risk management officials from Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and
Wisconsin. Other members include senior leaders from the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Geological
Survey, National Resource Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Weather
Service.

The RFRMT is currently directed by a 3-member leadership committee that
includes Maj. Gen. Michael Walsh, Commander, USACE Mississippi Valley
Division (MVD), Mr. Gary Clark, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and
Bob Bissell, FEMA Region VII. The RFRMT's overall purpose is to assist
federal, tribal, state, and local governmental partners to coordinate,
communicate and collaborate on flood risk management initiatives within the
Upper Mississippi River basin.

The RFRMT is working on ideas to integrate pre-flood mitigation with a
long-term strategy to plan and implement pre-and post-flood emergency actions
to reduce regional flood risks this coming spring and in the future. The
RFRMT framework ensures that important disaster planning and dialog occurs
before a flood event. For example, the quarterly meetings allow member states
to discuss immediate and long range plans for flood risk reduction within
their jurisdictions.
The team's prime goal is to minimize risk to life, property, and agriculture,
while also protecting natural resources in a reasonable and cost-effective
manner. Additional RFRMT goals include implementing flood risk and watershed
management programs and activities that complement existing mitigation
activities. The team is striving to ensure that flood risk reduction
initiatives encompass federal, tribal, state, and local programs and
authorities in an inclusive or systemic approach.

The RFRMT's goals also include considering both potential Structural
Alternatives and Non-Structural Alternatives (NSAs) in all future planning to
reduce flood risks and potential losses region wide.

Asian Carp Update

Indiana Planning Carp Barrier Of Their Own........

Indiana is going on the offensive against the Asian carp invasion.  They will be constructing a mesh fence across a 700 acre marsh in order to block a possible carp entry point into the Great Lakes.  The barrier will serve to separate the Wabash and Maumee Rivers, which can co-mingle during certain flooding conditions.  Asian carp have been in the Wabash River for around 15 years.  The Maumee River drains into Lake Erie.........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update.......

Day 221
07/14/2010

Daily stats
Start: 4:15 AM - Middle Bass Island, OH
Finish 12:00 PM (noon) - Woodtick Peninsula, MI
Time: 7:45 hours
Daily dist: 29 miles
Total dist: 4200+
Companions: None

Boater Picked Up For BWI After Splashing Kids

Monday afternoon, Bruce Calvetti was operating his vessel at high rates of speed and making turns in an unsafe manor, splashing children fishing on the shore.  Fishermen called the police, who stopped Calvetti.  Calvetti admitted to drinking, but refused sobriety tests and the breath test.  He was charged with boating under the influence........

Missouri And Illinois Levees

Public Meeting To Be Held About Levee Fortification Using Coal Ash........

A public hearing is slated for Thursday to debate the merits of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' plan to use coal ash to bolster the Mississippi River levees in Missouri and Illinois.  Environmental groups are opposing the plan, as coal ash contains toxins and has been linked to cancer.  However, the Corps released a study in May that determined the mixture of lime and coal ash they intend to inject into the levees is not only safe, but cost effective.  The meeting will begin at 10 am, in the Robert Young Building at 1222 Spruce St., in St. Louis........

Asian Carp Update

Deal Inked To Export Carp To China........

Tuesday, Illinois Governor, Pat Quinn, announced that an agreement has been reached by a Chinese meat processing company and Big River Fish of Pearl, Illinois for the exportation of Asian carp.  The president of Big River Fish, Rick Smith, wants anglers to catch as many carp as they can, as the fish will never be completely fished out of the Mississippi or Illinois Rivers.  Depending on the season and the market, the carp could bring in as much as 10 - 15 cents per pound.  The bony carp may not be too popular in the States, they are quite popular in China........

Osage River Near Lake Ozark, Missouri

    Wastewater Spill Into Osage River........

Severe weather caused a power outage at a lift station in Lake Ozark, Missouri, resulting in about 2,500 gallons of wastewater being released into the Osage River.  Lake Ozark officials notified the Missouri Department of Natural Resources that wastewater backed up, eventually flowing into a ditch that eventually flows into the Osage River.  Lake Ozark crews cleaned and treated the land the wastewater flowed over........

SEMO Port Dredging Needs Federal Backing........

The Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority will be unable to afford to dredge their harbor unless the feds step in with funding to do so.  In years past, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged the port's harbor, but will not continue as the tonnage of cargo moved through the port has fallen below 1 million tons annually.  This year's flooding has helped keep traffic flowing smoothly through the harbor, however, flooding deposits more sand in the harbor.  The dredging costs run around $250,000........

Mississippi River Rescue Earns 3 Men Citations........

On Monday, three men who partnered up to save an 87 year old man from his sinking car on May 8 were honored with the St. Paul Fire Department's highest honor, the Meritorious Service Award. Arnold Bellas was parked on a boat ramp watching the river go by, when Ken Pelton and Doug Nagle were getting ready bring their boat in.  Bellas tried to back his car up, but put the car into drive, hurtling out into the River.  Pelton and Nagle immediately piloted their vessel adjacent to the Buick and towed the car to more shallow water.  Jeff Brewer manuvered his boat on the passenger side of the car, and was able to eventually free Bellas........

The Picture of the Day ...... was sent to us Kevin Knobbe who hails out of Eagle's Landing Marina in the boat.... " Caught Ya Lookin "

RiverBill,

Desperate times call for desperate measures. These photo's were taken Sunday and are of my boat trailer being "floated " down the river from Eagle's Landing to North Shore in order to get it out of the flood waters so we can spend the weekend at Mark Twain Lake. With the help of Bob Bender and Steve of Eagle's Landing, we strapped a 55 gallon barrel and styrofoam to my trailer and away we went down the river. It worked great for " Redneck " enginering !

HISTORY OF THE

“BLESSING OF THE FLEET”

“Blessing of the Fleet” ceremonies started hundreds of years ago in Mediterranean fishing communities. The blessing ceremonies were held to ensure a safe and prosperous year for the fishermen.

There are many legends and stories about the first blessing of fishing boats. It is said that it started when some fishermen in Sicily lost their way in the storm. The fishermen saw a light, headed toward it and were led to safety. The light was actually from a medallion on Madonna del Lume (Mother of Light) which sat high in grotto on a cliff along the sea. Soon after, the Priest started blessing the fishermen's boats.

The ceremonies were usually a Catholic celebration and the priest blessed the boats; however, there are also many blessings held by an Episcopalian Minister as well. They are celebrated all over the world and held in many different fashions. Some consist of festivities, mass, parades, pageantry dancing, feasts and contests.

Some of the biggest blessings held in the United States are in Biloxi, Mississippi; Bayou la Batre, Alabama; and Tarpon Springs, Florida.

Biloxi started their Blessing of the Fleet ceremony in 1929. The boats are blessed by the Pastor of St. Michael Catholic Church and the Biloxi Diocese. This celebration marks the beginning of the shrimping season. A Queen and a Shrimp King reign over the Blessing and the Festival.

The Blessing of the Fleet in Bayou La Batre, Alabama just celebrated their 61st annual event on May 2nd of this year.  They nominate a Queen from one of the local elementary schools, hold quilt raffles, a gumbo cook-off and make awards to three different categories of boats: large working boats, small working boats and pleasure boats.

The Tarpon Springs, Florida Blessing is held every year on January 6th and is the largest Greek Orthodox celebration in the Western Hemisphere. Tarpon Springs, located about 30 miles NW of St. Petersburg, is known as the “Sponge capital of the world.” In fact, Greek sponge divers immigrated there at the turn of the 20th century and today the Greek men dive for a cross that is blessed by the Priest and thrown into the water during the ceremony. Their event is held by St. Nicholas Church.

The Jacksonville, Florida Blessing of the Fleet is held on Palm Sunday every year since 1985.

Darien, Georgia started their blessing in 1970. It's held on a Sunday in the spring depending on the tides. It's held during a falling tide, because a rising tide will push the boats into the bridge. A week long celebration, which includes a fisherman’s fry, evening prayer service and a street parade. After the boats are blessed, they parade from the Altamaha River and then back to the Atlantic Ocean. Local clerics from several denominations are lined up on the bridge to bless the boats as they go by. This begins Spring shrimping season for the town.

Brunswick, Georgia’s Blessing of the Fleet was started by the Portuguese immigrants around the time of WWII.  It takes place on Mother’s Day in honor of Our Lady of Fatima, the patron of Portugal and the mothers in the parish. They start with morning mass and then crown the statue of Our Lady of Fatima. The parishioners parade down Hanover Square, led by a Knights of Columbus honor guard and 8 men carrying the statue decorated with ferns and fresh flowers – red (for living mothers) and white (for deceased mothers). The ceremony then moves to the waterfront where the decorated shrimp trawlers parade by. The working boats are matched with recreational boats and the Priest from St. Francis and the Knights of Columbus honor guard board one of the them and the priest sprinkles holy water on each boat and blesses it. The boats are also judged on decoration and awarded prizes. The boats eventually move up the East River to St. Simon Sound where the flower anchor from the statue is laid on the water in memory of local fishermen who have lost their life at sea.

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina has celebrated their Blessing of the Fleet since 1987. They mainly support the local shrimping industry. Their ceremony consists of an elaborate shrimp boat parade and blessing of the shrimp fleet.

Even though Blessing of the Fleet ceremonies are celebrated differently across our country, they are all beautiful events.  They promote boating safety, some reassurance to recreational boaters and prosperity to the working boaters.

It is a great boating tradition – no matter where you boat and live..

Upper Mississippi River

The Big Muddy Is A Bit Clearer These Days........

Recently, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that the Mississippi River is around 50% clearer than in the past five years.  The DNR credits more plants filtering the water, as well as an increased zebra mussel population.  Flooding during the past few years has helped out the clarity.  The DNR does point out that heavy rains or increased River flow could muddy the waters........

Making Headway - Weekly Column
    By Captain Larry Walker

Anyone that knows me knows that I am not in favor of "over regulation." However, I am a strong proponent of the Navigation Rules. But the observance of the Rules can change over time. One thing that has changed noticeably in the past twenty years or so is the practice of using maneuvering and warning signals in inland waters.

Sound signals are prescribed under both Inland and International Nav Rules. Our focus today will be signals under the U.S. Inland Rules. Before discussing the sound signals, it is important to note that under the Inland Rules, a conversation on your marine VHF radio can substitute for maneuvering signals.

In cases where a mariner's VHF radio is not turned on or is not audible, communication with that mariner is limited to a few options. Note that throwing a rock at him to get his attention would not be an exercise in good seamanship. We are left with the "whistle signals" prescribed in the Nav Rules.

The Rules refer to a "whistle" as a device used to make a sound signal. Your vessel may have an electric device that is labeled "horn." It amounts to the same thing as long as the sound produced equates to the sound produced by a comparable "air" or "steam" operated whistle. The sound of the whistle/horn varies with the size of the vessel.

Just as Morse code uses one or more dots and dashes to represent a letter, the maneuvering Rules use one or more blasts of the whistle to state your intention. Blasts on the whistle can be "short" (1 second) or "prolonged" (4-6 seconds). One or more blasts make up a maneuvering signal.

Whistle signals can be used for many things. Let’s talk about “overtaking” (approaching from astern and moving ahead of the other vessel) and “passing” (where two vessels pass each other in opposite directions). Accordingly passing is when both vessels are heading in opposite directions and overtaking is when both vessels are heading in the same direction.

Let’s put the above information into a practical scenario. If you are in the Intracoastal Waterway or a river and seek to overtake a vessel that is ahead of you in the channel, you might hail that vessel on VHF channel 16. After switching to a "working channel," you can discuss the maneuver, provided that the other vessel operator is listening to the radio. If not, your whistle will get their attention.

There are two Inland Rules maneuvering signals that come into play when overtaking another vessel. One "short" blast communicates that you intend to overtake them on their starboard side. Two "short" blasts communicates that you intend to overtake them on their port side. Did you notice that I said you "intend" to overtake? That's because the maneuver is not authorized unless the other vessel operator agrees that it is safe to execute.

For the other vessel operator to reply in the affirmative, they return the same whistle signal. To reply in disagreement, they signal with five or more short and rapid blasts on the whistle. Vessels within a 1/2 mile of each other are required to either signal or use VHF radio communication.

Often, commercial mariners will refer to a “one whistle” or a “two whistle” maneuver. “One whistle” means that the other vessel will remain on your port side when overtaking or passing them. “Two whistles” means that the other vessel will remain on your starboard side when overtaking or passing them.

While the above signals are still on the books, they are practiced infrequently by recreational boaters. If you use them you might just start a trend!

Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

Two Men Nearly Sink On Homemade Boat........

Nicholas Mella and Kasey Stringer put together a homemade pontoon boat with the intention of taking a three week cruise to New Orleans.  The pair shoved off with two dogs Sunday afternoon, but by 6 am Monday morning, heavy rains and strong currents started to take their toll on the boat.  Luckily, the U.S. Coast Guard was able to respond quickly, and rescue the men and canines.  The Coast Guard called of the men's cruise, as the boat was damaged, and was not certified to be on the River........

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Update

New Cap Installed, Flow Stemmed For Now........

Monday, BP announced that they have installed a new 40 ton containment device atop the blown out oil well a mile beneath the surface of the ocean.  The company did state that success was not for certain, as the containment system had never been deployed at this depth or in these conditions before.  However, if the cap works as intended, it would either contain the oil, or allow it to be safely siphoned to ships waiting on the surface........

Coast Guard rescues fisherman near Rollover Pass
Click the picture to watch the video

HOUSTON - The Coast Guard rescued a man who was stranded and clinging to a piling after he waded too far from shore while fishing near Rollover Pass, Texas, Monday.

A watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston received the initial report from the Galveston County Sheriff Department. The dispatcher said the man's head would occasionally dip below the water as he tried to hang on.

Search and rescue coordinators at the Sector dispatched a Coast Guard MH65-C Dolphin rescue helicopter, which arrived at the scene just after 2 p.m.

A rescue swimmer was lowered into the water to try and free the fisherman, who had become tangled in fishing line while he clung to the piling.

He was hoisted into the helicopter and transported to University of Texas Medical Branch.

"This is what we go to swimmer school to do, so it's always fun to be able to get in the water for a rescue," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Brad Pigage, the rescue swimmer who aided the fisherman.

The man was not treated for any injuries.

The video was shot by Galveston County Pct. 7 Constable William Comeaux.

Asian Carp Update

Carp Found In Lagoon Near Chicago........

Early last week, a large fish kill occurred in Garfield Park lagoon, west of Chicago.  A fisherman found what appears to be an Asian carp on Thursday.  The man took the fish to a bait store and it weighed in at 70 lbs.  The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will take possession of the fish to determine if it really is an Asian carp.  The lagoon is isolated, and it is suspected that some young Asian carp were introduced when the IDNR stocked the pond with catfish........

David Youngren, artist and member of the Sons of the American Legion, has been donating time from his weekend to paint a mural of the Hastings High Bridge inside the American Legion Post 47.  The truss bridge spanning the Mississippi River is visible from the the Post.  The bridge is scheduled to be dismantled in 2013 in order to make way for a $120 million, four lane bridge.  The mural will not only feature a depiction of the first steel truss bridge in Minnesota, but also a bad eagle and a red, white and blue theme complete with stars, framing the bridge........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Chartered Cruises Available At The Lake........

To get out on the water, many people bring their own boats to the Lake, and some others rent a boat.  Another way to get out on the water is to charter a boat and let someone else do the piloting.  There are many options for charters, including narrated sight-seeing cruises, dinner, supper or cocktail cruises, and even excursions for viewing fireworks on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day........

Break: 12:30 AM - 3:30 PM Huntington Beach, OH
Finish 6:30 PM - , OH
Time: 7:00
Daily dist: 25 miles
Total dist: 4200+
Companions: Mark and Wendy then local paddling club
Weather: Mostly clear w/ variable winds high in 80’s
Notes: A nice day on the water with Mark and Wendy then later with a local kayak club.
Throughout this trip I have benefited immeasurably from the kindness and generosity of people who barely know me. Today was once again one of those days.

The day started out from the rowing club dock in downtown Cleveland where I was joined by Mark who hosted me the last two days. His plan was to paddle north with me for about ten miles, then catch up with another paddler near our destination that could shuttle him back to his truck. The plan went off like clockwork and about an hour from Huntington Beach we were joined by Wendy who had put in not too far away. We all paddled in to the beach together, then after a snack break at the “Honey Hut” snack shop, Mark and Wendy launched and headed back toward town to the next beach over where Wendy’s car was waiting.....Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Vessel Scrimshaw Aground ......

ANCHORAGE, Alaska Đ The owner of the 47-foot pleasure craft Scrimshaw and a crewman from Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Ketchikan (ashore) survey the damage sustained by the vessel after it was left aground by low tide in Annette Bay off of Annette Island south of Ketchikan Sunday. The Scrimshaw with two people aboard was left the vessel aground by the retreating tide, Coast Guard personnel and commercial salvage are working to stop the leakage and prepare the boat for refloating upon the high tide.
