In spite of the U.S. Supreme Court refusing to order the Chicago shipping locks closed twice, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin has filed suit in the U.S. District Court in northern Illinois. Ohio River Swim Completed On Saturday........
Saturday afternoon, Mimi Hughes stroked her way from the green waters of the Ohio River into the muddy currents of the Mississippi River at Ft. Defiance, just south of Cairo, Illinois. Cheers broke out after Hughes popped her head above the surface and asked onlookers how far it was to New Orleans. Cairo leaders paraded Hughes around town atop a Cairo fire truck. The truck brought Hughes to the fire house so she could get cleaned up. Cairo Mayor, Judson Childs, presented Hughes with a key to the city, flowers, a plaque, and to top it all off, an a cappella rendition of "You Are So Beautiful"........

Yamaha Looking To Sell Century Boats........
Yamaha Motor Corp. USA announced that recent negotiations to sell the assets of Century Boats has not resulted in a sale, however, Yamaha is still looking to sell all or part of Century's assets. The manufacture of Century Boats halted in December 2009, as Yamaha was shifting their aim to core operations. Yamaha also owns Skeeter Boats and G3 Boats, and the sale of Century Boats would not affect either company........

SMITHVILLE Mo – The Missouri Department of
Conservation (MDC) is working with Clay County Parks & Recreation, the City
of Smithville and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to investigate
the recent discovery of zebra mussels in a cove of Smithville Lake and to
try to prevent the spread of the invasive species in the lake.

Four Rescued After Boat Capsizes........
Saturday night, rescue crews were called out around 9:30 pm, to respond to a vessel capsizing. The rescue crews recovered two boaters, a boat in close proximity picked up another and the fourth boater was able to swim to shore. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the boat to capsize, as well as finding out whether alcohol was a factor........

Six twenty-something actors from the Minneapolis/St. Paul area are floating down the Mississippi River on a raft they constructed from scavenged items, in order to stop in river towns from the Twin Cities to New Orleans in order to perform in parks, taverns and even on the streets. The performers are called the Unseen Ghost Brigade, as the six performers are playing the ghost of historical characters that lived on the Mississippi River, including Mark Twain........

Tubing Accident Injures 2, Boat Destroyed By Fire........
Jessica Hendricks and Bethan Smith were seriously injured after the tube they were riding on struck the shore. The women were flown to University Hospital in Columbia.... On Saturday, Leon Sanford was piloting his 1989 Formula when he noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment, following hearing popping noises. The engine fire destroyed the vessel. The Missouri State Water Patrol listed the vessel as a total loss........

Three Arrested For Pointing Laser At A Tow Boat........
Matthew Mauck, David Erminger and Todd Manz were arrested Saturday after shining blinding green lasers at tow vessels, a commercial airliner, police officers as well as a police helicopter. Manz was released after falsely claiming that he was not involved in pointing the lasers. Further investigation revealed that Manz actually pointed the laser at the tow vessels Manz is now wanted for false reporting........

Gavins Point Dam Releases To Increase........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that they will be increasing the amount of water flowing through the Gavins Point Dam, to release flood waters stored in the Missouri River reservoirs. The Corps had been restricting discharges from the dam, because of flooding downstream. Gradually, the flow will be increased from 34,000 cubic feet per minute to 40,000 cubic feet per minute........

Recently, David Lester and his son, Bo completed a 43 day, 2,311 mile journey down the Mississippi River in a Pirogue. The trip was hatched some 12 years ago around a campfire, with David, Bo and Buddy Lester, along with Ray and Joey Bergeron. The Bergerons died in a plane accident, and buddy was killed in a car wreck. David and Bo decided to push on in tribute of the others.......

Ohio River Swim Drawing To A Close........
It is anticipated that Mimi Hughes will complete her 981 mile swim down the Ohio River in Cairo, Illinois around 5 pm on Saturday. Hughes swam the Ohio River to raise awareness of education and economic opportunities for girls and women. Since beginning her journey on May 22, Hughes has been fighting an eye infection, sore shoulders and nausea. To top it all off, the Mississippi River is backing up into the Ohio River, possibly giving Hughes a negative current to deal with........

Bones Of A 32 Foot Vessel Found At Ground Zero........
Workers at World Trade Center unearthed a rib of a 32 foot vessel with a back hoe on Tuesday morning. As the remains are fragile, workers are excavating the vessel by hand. A 100 lb. anchor was uncovered nearby. It is not certain if the anchor belongs to the ship. Authorities believe that in the 18th century, the vessel was used as part of the fill used to extend lower Manhattan out into the Hudson River........

It's been a busy
two days and it's already way past my bed time so I have to keep
this short. Yesterday (Day 222) I had a short day as I paddled
in to Stony Point near Monroe MI to stay with Kim Harper from
the local paddling club. At dinner Kim and I met up with Ed
Webber with whom I am staying tonight. By giving it to Ed to
take home with him, I took advantage of the rare opportunity to
pass my gear along to my next stop and enjoyed a lighter than
normal boat to paddle today.

P-2764_2765. The applicant seeks authorization to modify P-2577, by continuing periodic maintenance, but by placing dredged material into the river just outside the harbor entrance at river mile 221.5. P-2576 previously authorized the expansion of the harbor by digging out a new area 250 feet wide and 300 feet long. After issuance of the permit, it was revealed that the proposed 250x300 feet would be inadequate to accomplish the project. Since the applicant could not accomplish the goals of the project as authorized, the applicant never proceeded with the work. Under P-2564 the applicant now wishes to proceed with the project by altering the original proposal to construct an area 250 feet wide and 480 feet long. The area, which was authorized to be approximately 1.72 acres in size excavated out of non-jurisdictional areas, is now proposed to be 2.75 acres in size. This material will still be hauled away to an approved non-wetland site. The applicant proposes The public notice comment period opens on July 14, 2010 and closes August 04, 2010.
P-2767, MVS-2010-488: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District proposes the completion of design deficiency corrections for the East St. Louis, IL Flood Protection Levee System, also known as the MESD and Chain of Rocks Levee systems. The activities are proposed in accordance with measures recommended by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who believe that the levee system has significant underseepage problems and possible other problems. As such, the Corps cannot certify that the levee system will protect against a 100-year flood. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District Project Management Branch announces the availability of the Design Deficiency Corrections East St. Louis, IL Flood Protection Project Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). The purpose of the EA and FONSI is to present a detailed proposal for the significant underseepage problems and possible other problems along the MESD and the Chain of Rocks levee systems. Seepage under a levee and through a levee can be controlled by a variety of measures. Seepage through the main aquifer under a levee can be controlled by landside relief wells, seepage berms (generally landside), slurry trench cutoff walls (generally near the riverside levee toe or at the levee centerline), and measures to increase the distance between the levee and the point where flood water is introduced to the aquifer. The tentative recommended plan for underseepage and through-seepage controls for a flood at 54 ft on the St. Louis gage (design flood at 52 feet on the St. Louis gage plus 2 feet of freeboard) consists of the lowest cost alternative for most decision segments and new alternatives for certain decision segments that were identified prior to and during a subsequent value-engineering study.

Bill Passed To Delay Mandatory Flood Insurance........
On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that prevents residents of the American Bottoms region from being required to purchase flood insurance for at least 5 years. The bill halts the requirement for flood insurance purchase for 5 years, and phases in the flood insurance requirement over another 5 years. The Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council has reason to believe that they can finish repairs to the levees within 5 years, which will negate the need for residents to purchase flood insurance........

West Marine's Second Quarter Results In........
Thursday, West Marine released their second quarter results. They reported net revenues of $233.4 million, which is an increase of $18 million, or 8.4% over last years $215.4 million. Because of a 9.4% increase in comparable store sales, and $9.9 million from stores opened during 2009 and in early 2010, revenues increased $17.3 million.........

It Appears New Cap Working........
On Thursday, BP announced that their new cap for the blown out oil well has effectively stopped the oil leak. BP has made many attempts to stem the flow of oil, and has been successful while conducting tests where they closed valves and vents located on the containment cap. The tests that can take up to 2 days, measures pressures inside the well to gauge it's condition.........

Freighter Spills Oil Into The St. Lawrence Seaway........
Monday, a damaged freighter released around 75 tons of oil into the St. Lawrence seaway. Crews were working on the cleanup as early as Wednesday morning. It is expected that the cleanup would take around 24 hours, with navigation able to resume sometime Thursday morning. The freighter ran aground after experiencing engine failure. A hole in the vessel's hull must be repaired before it can be removed........

Former President George H.W. Bush's Boat Runs Aground........
Former President George H.W. Bush can often be found running his 38 foot fishing boat, Fidelity IV, off the coast of Kennebunkport, Maine. A fog rolled in mid-afternoon, making navigation next to impossible. Bush's boat got caught up in swells that pushed the vessel onto the beach. The vessel following the President's boat suffered the same fate. Luckily, there were no injuries, and neither boat was seriously damaged. After several hours, Fidelity IV was able to be floated off of the sand........

Analyst Believes Steeper Decline Predicted By Brunswick........
Timothy Conder, an analyst with Wells FargoSecurities, has predicted that Brunswick will state they expect retail boat sales to be down by up to 20% this year, as opposed to the 10% predicted previously. Brunswick will be releasing their second quarter results on July 29th. Conder believes that Brunswick will reaffirm that they will return to profitability in 2011, but will do so with a considerable amount of caution........

Indiana Planning Carp Barrier Of Their Own........
Indiana is going on the offensive against the Asian carp invasion. They will be constructing a mesh fence across a 700 acre marsh in order to block a possible carp entry point into the Great Lakes. The barrier will serve to separate the Wabash and Maumee Rivers, which can co-mingle during certain flooding conditions. Asian carp have been in the Wabash River for around 15 years. The Maumee River drains into Lake Erie.........

Boater Picked Up For BWI After Splashing Kids
Monday afternoon, Bruce Calvetti was operating his vessel at high rates of speed and making turns in an unsafe manor, splashing children fishing on the shore. Fishermen called the police, who stopped Calvetti. Calvetti admitted to drinking, but refused sobriety tests and the breath test. He was charged with boating under the influence........

Public Meeting To Be Held About Levee Fortification Using Coal Ash........
A public hearing is slated for Thursday to debate the merits of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' plan to use coal ash to bolster the Mississippi River levees in Missouri and Illinois. Environmental groups are opposing the plan, as coal ash contains toxins and has been linked to cancer. However, the Corps released a study in May that determined the mixture of lime and coal ash they intend to inject into the levees is not only safe, but cost effective. The meeting will begin at 10 am, in the Robert Young Building at 1222 Spruce St., in St. Louis........

Deal Inked To Export Carp To China........
Tuesday, Illinois Governor, Pat Quinn, announced that an agreement has been reached by a Chinese meat processing company and Big River Fish of Pearl, Illinois for the exportation of Asian carp. The president of Big River Fish, Rick Smith, wants anglers to catch as many carp as they can, as the fish will never be completely fished out of the Mississippi or Illinois Rivers. Depending on the season and the market, the carp could bring in as much as 10 - 15 cents per pound. The bony carp may not be too popular in the States, they are quite popular in China........

Wastewater Spill Into Osage River........
Severe weather caused a power outage at a lift station in Lake Ozark, Missouri, resulting in about 2,500 gallons of wastewater being released into the Osage River. Lake Ozark officials notified the Missouri Department of Natural Resources that wastewater backed up, eventually flowing into a ditch that eventually flows into the Osage River. Lake Ozark crews cleaned and treated the land the wastewater flowed over........

SEMO Port Dredging Needs Federal Backing........
The Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority will be unable to afford to dredge their harbor unless the feds step in with funding to do so. In years past, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged the port's harbor, but will not continue as the tonnage of cargo moved through the port has fallen below 1 million tons annually. This year's flooding has helped keep traffic flowing smoothly through the harbor, however, flooding deposits more sand in the harbor. The dredging costs run around $250,000........

Mississippi River Rescue Earns 3 Men Citations........
On Monday, three men who partnered up to save an 87 year old man from his sinking car on May 8 were honored with the St. Paul Fire Department's highest honor, the Meritorious Service Award. Arnold Bellas was parked on a boat ramp watching the river go by, when Ken Pelton and Doug Nagle were getting ready bring their boat in. Bellas tried to back his car up, but put the car into drive, hurtling out into the River. Pelton and Nagle immediately piloted their vessel adjacent to the Buick and towed the car to more shallow water. Jeff Brewer manuvered his boat on the passenger side of the car, and was able to eventually free Bellas........

HISTORY OF THE “BLESSING OF THE FLEET”
There are many legends and stories about the first blessing of fishing boats. It is said that it started when some fishermen in Sicily lost their way in the storm. The fishermen saw a light, headed toward it and were led to safety. The light was actually from a medallion on Madonna del Lume (Mother of Light) which sat high in grotto on a cliff along the sea. Soon after, the Priest started blessing the fishermen's boats.
Biloxi started their Blessing of the Fleet ceremony in 1929. The boats are blessed by the Pastor of St. Michael Catholic Church and the Biloxi Diocese. This celebration marks the beginning of the shrimping season. A Queen and a Shrimp King reign over the Blessing and the Festival.
Darien, Georgia started their blessing in 1970. It's held on a Sunday in the spring depending on the tides. It's held during a falling tide, because a rising tide will push the boats into the bridge. A week long celebration, which includes a fisherman’s fry, evening prayer service and a street parade. After the boats are blessed, they parade from the Altamaha River and then back to the Atlantic Ocean. Local clerics from several denominations are lined up on the bridge to bless the boats as they go by. This begins Spring shrimping season for the town.

The Big Muddy Is A Bit Clearer These Days........
Recently, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that the Mississippi River is around 50% clearer than in the past five years. The DNR credits more plants filtering the water, as well as an increased zebra mussel population. Flooding during the past few years has helped out the clarity. The DNR does point out that heavy rains or increased River flow could muddy the waters........

Mate Piloting Tow Takes The Fifth
Over the weekend, the mate at the helm of the towboat that pushed the barge that slammed into a "Duck" tourist vessel and sinking it, exercised his fifth amendment rights and refused to meet with investigators. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that the mate was on duty and the captain was off when the accident occurred. The Duck boat crew has told the NTSB that they received no response to their radio calls, although nearby vessels heard the transmissions.........

Recently, Cummins announced that they are expanding their High Horsepower Technical Center as well as the high horsepower engine product line at the company's Seymour, Indiana facility. This move will add 200 engineering and manufacturing jobs over the next 5 years. Cummins will be investing some $100 million on the expansion of the Seymour facility, which now employs almost 450 people........

Two Men Nearly Sink On Homemade Boat........
Nicholas Mella and Kasey Stringer put together a homemade pontoon boat with the intention of taking a three week cruise to New Orleans. The pair shoved off with two dogs Sunday afternoon, but by 6 am Monday morning, heavy rains and strong currents started to take their toll on the boat. Luckily, the U.S. Coast Guard was able to respond quickly, and rescue the men and canines. The Coast Guard called of the men's cruise, as the boat was damaged, and was not certified to be on the River........

New Cap Installed, Flow Stemmed For Now........
Monday, BP announced that they have installed a new 40 ton containment device atop the blown out oil well a mile beneath the surface of the ocean. The company did state that success was not for certain, as the containment system had never been deployed at this depth or in these conditions before. However, if the cap works as intended, it would either contain the oil, or allow it to be safely siphoned to ships waiting on the surface........

Carp Found In Lagoon Near Chicago........
Early last week, a large fish kill occurred in Garfield Park lagoon, west of Chicago. A fisherman found what appears to be an Asian carp on Thursday. The man took the fish to a bait store and it weighed in at 70 lbs. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will take possession of the fish to determine if it really is an Asian carp. The lagoon is isolated, and it is suspected that some young Asian carp were introduced when the IDNR stocked the pond with catfish........

Zebra Mussels Heading For Canada........
Recently, larval zebra mussels were discovered in the Red River in North Dakota. The discovery has Manitoba officials worried, as the zebra mussels have not been found west of Ontario until now. Nathan Olsen of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources stated that Manitoba should prepare for the inevitable, as there is no way to control the mussels, shy of filtering the entire River.......

Hastings, Minnesota Artist Painting Bridge Mural........
David Youngren, artist and member of the Sons of the American Legion, has been donating time from his weekend to paint a mural of the Hastings High Bridge inside the American Legion Post 47. The truss bridge spanning the Mississippi River is visible from the the Post. The bridge is scheduled to be dismantled in 2013 in order to make way for a $120 million, four lane bridge. The mural will not only feature a depiction of the first steel truss bridge in Minnesota, but also a bad eagle and a red, white and blue theme complete with stars, framing the bridge........

our country, they are all beautiful events. They promote boating
safety, some reassurance to recreational boaters and prosperity to the
working boaters.
