Hello, my name is Joel and these are pictures I took on my trip up to Iowa to look at a boat.
Happened to come across these and
I thought you would like to see.
After talking to them they said they
were from Minnesota and all were headed down to New Orleans. There was a total of 4 boats but only saw 3.
Well here you go,
its a site to see and the last one is made out of a skate board half pipe.
I got a huge kick out of it along with the rest of my family that was with me. Joel |

Missouri & Illinois Sometimes Share The Same Shore Of The Mississippi River
Mark Twain commented how much the course of the Mississippi River has changed over the years. As a result of these changes, called avulsion, portions of Missouri and Illinois have ended up on the same side of the river. It would seem that a River would be a logical choice for a border, however, a state's boundaries are permanent, but the course of the River is subject to change. The best known avulsion is at Kaskaskia Island, where a big piece of Illinois is sitting on the Missouri side of the River........

Corps Says Missouri River Flooding Likely........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued a warning that the Missouri River will be flirting with flood stage around Omaha over the weekend. Heavy rains in northern Iowa and South Dakota could take the River levels to 28.5 feet. Flood Stage is at 29 feet.........

Critics Not Pleased With Floodplain Re-Definition........
A new bill that is intended to protect businesses and industry has raised the ire of critics. President of the American Bottoms Conservancy and chair of the Illinois Sierra Club Floodplain Committee, Kathy Andria, states that the recently signed Illinois Senate Bill 2556 was not very well thought out. Andria asserts that the bill proclaims the American Bottoms area does not contain a floodplain, even though the land is located behind levees that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deemed as structurally deficient due to sand boils and seepage issues........

Man Hospitalized After Boat Explodes........
After fueling his 2000 Baja 38 Special, Donald Black was severely burned when the vessel exploded. Several witnesses reported that after a loud noise, the vessel was completely engulfed in flames. Black was able to eventually jump into the water, but not before being badly burned. Black was flown to the hospital. Witnesses mentioned that Black had commented on a heavy fuel odor while he was filling up........

Ill. Governor Re-Defines 100 Year Flood Plain........
Thursday, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed Senate Bill 2556, defining the term, 100 year flood. The bill states that if an area has a federal levee, a flood protection district, is currently improving the levee to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers standards and has current Federal Emergency Management Agency Maps illustrating compliance to these guidelines, then the bottoms are not located in a 100 year floodplain........

NEW: Effective July 1, 2010 the Department will implement provisions of HB 683 which will allow any resident of Missouri who possesses a Boating Safety Education Card issued by the Missouri State Water Patrol to apply for a boater identification indicator. The indicator will be placed on the back of the driver or nondriver license. The issuance of a boater identification indicator on a driver license or nondriver license is optional.

In the weeks ahead, higher crude supplies should mean lower prices at the pumps, but for now, the wholesale prices have caused a hike in the prices at the pumps to the tune of a nickel per gallon. Over the weekend, boaters should see prices around $3.09 - $3.29. On land, the prices are hovering around $2.49 - $2.55........

Construction at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26 has caused the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to temporarily stop offering tours at the dam. New Lights Blinding Tow Pilots........
The spans over the Mississippi River linking Natchez, Mississippi and Vidalia, Louisiana recently received a $3 million makeover in the form of aesthetic lighting. An unfortunate effect of the lighting is that tow pilots are having trouble seeing the red and green navigation lights used to safely guide the tows past the bridge. Jim Eggleston, an engineer with the Mississippi Department of Transportation, stated that he would have thought the new lights would have made the bridge more visible to tow pilots. Eggleston added that he does not drive down the River........

The Natchez-Vidalia bridges carry US-65 and US-84 across the Mississippi River. The original span opened 1940, and the twin, second bridge opened in 1988........

3G Arrives At The Lake........
iPhone and smartphone owners rejoice, AT&T's 3G network has arrived at the Lake of the Ozarks. Recently, AT&T completed 3G upgrades to some 17 towers in and around the Lake. AT&T cited a 5000% increase in data traffic over the past three years as the reason for the improvements. AT&T intends to add 30 new cell sites and will upgrade 110 more throughout the state by the close of 2010........

Public Beach No.2 Closed For The Weekend........
Lake of The Ozarks' Public Beach No.2 is closed for swimming this weekend, as E. coli levels exceed standards set by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Mark Twain State Park Beach and Wakonda State Park Beach also tested higher than DNR standards. PB No.2 tested at 325.5 E. coli colonies/100ml. PB No.1 tested within standards, and will remain open........

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee Alternating, One Way Traffic Restored........
While clean-up efforts stemming from Monday's barge accident are continuing, Wednesday morning, traffic on the Mississippi River was opened for alternating, one way traffic. In spite of the alternating traffic flow and a lower speed limit, there is no traffic issues. There have been no estimates as to when the Mississippi River will re-open fully. Another barge is on the way to lighter remaining chemicals from the damaged barges........

An unfortunate effect of the lighting is that tow pilots are having trouble seeing the red and green navigation lights used to safely guide the tows past the bridge. Jim Eggleston, an engineer with the Mississippi Department of Transportation, stated that he would have thought the new lights would have made the bridge more visible to tow pilots. Eggleston added that he does not drive down the River........

What Once Was Lost, Now Is Found........
Wednesday, Canadian archaeologists announced that they have discovered a vessel that has been abandoned in Canada's western Arctic for over 150 years. The HMS Investigator was found standing upright and in good condition in about 36 feet of water. The Investigator was en-route on the final leg of the Northwest passage, when she ran into ice. The crew was forced to stay put over three winters prior to being rescued by the HMS Resolute. The vessel remained near where she was abandoned. Canadian officials have alerted the British government that one of their naval wrecks and the remains of three sailors has been discovered........

As the Mississippi River continues to rise, the residents and business owners of Clarksville, Missouri are keeping an eye on the River levels. The good news is that flooding forecasts have been lowered by the National Weather Service. The bad news is that portions of downtown Clarksville are submerged, as is the city's downtown drain. More rains could add flash flooding to the already swollen River........

FEMA Visits Flood
Victims, Assesses Damage........ The recent
torrential rains have turned storm sewers into wild malestroms that
caused damage to some 100 North St. Louis County homes. The Federal
Emergency Management Agency is going door to door to assess the
damages in order to determine whether federal assistance is
warranted. If the feds declare the area a disaster, FEMA will join
up with Missouri state disaster agency, SEMA, to organize disaster
and recovery centers. Unfortunately, help may still be weeks
off........

Experts Say Don't Eat The Crawdad Tartare........
While float trips on Missouri's freshwater streams are a great way to spend a lazy summer afternoon, Adam Brewer will be quick to mention that no matter how tasty a miniature lobster meal might sound, don't eat him raw. While on a float trip on the Jack's Fork River, Brewer ate a raw crawfish, and three months later, began suffering from fevers, coughing and shortness of breath. After 7 months of suffering and tests, a doctor with Washington University identified Brewer's malady as a rare parasitic worm infection called Paragonimiasis, that attacks the lungs. There has been only 7 recorded cases of this infection in North America, 3 of the victims are from St. Louis........

An Alligator Was Found In Jefferson County Creek........
Sunday, an alligator was spotted sunbathing on the bank of Joachim Creek. Alarmed residents called the authorities in to remove the three foot long reptile. It is believed that the gator was a former pet that may not have been well cared for prior to being abandoned. The gator is temporarily a resident at the World Bird Sanctuary, where he is being nursed back to health. Stanton, Missouri's Riverside Reptile Ranch will likely be the gator's new home........

New Madrid Quakes Of 1811 River's Fault?
A new study in the journal, Nature, is suggesting that the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 were in fact caused by ancient actions of the Mississippi River. Around 16,000 years ago, on the heels of the last ice age, the Mississippi River scoured away several tons of sediment from the center of the continent. During a period of 6,000 years, some 39 feet of sediment was eroded from the River basin. Due to the removal such large amounts of weight, the earth buckled, eventually failing, causing the earth-shattering violence of 1811........

July 29, 2008 in River History President Bush signed "The Clean Boating Act of 2008," while aboard Air Force One. The law permanently re-established a long-standing exemption for recreational boats from the "permitting requirements" of the Clean Water Act. It exempted effluent discharges incidental to the normal operation of vessels, including recreational boats. This includes deck runoff, bilge water, gray water and engine cooling water.
July 29, 2007 in River History Sharky's Floating Restaurant located at Woodland Marina, mile marker 222 on Dardenne Slough, closed it's doors.
July 29, 1993 in River History The 1993 flood water crested at Clarksville, Mo at 37.7 feet setting new record. Old record was 36.4 feet set in 1973

Illinois River Near Marseilles, Illinois Man Sucked Through Marseilles Dam........
Sunday, Stephen Koempel took the ride of his life. While riding his jet ski with a pal, Koempel's jet ski stalled. The friend tossed Koempel a rope, but the second jet ski was unable to tow the disabled boat against the heavy current. Koempel jumped ship and was promptly sucked through the dam. Luckily, he popped up some 45 yards downstream. Koempel's jet ski took a trip over the dam as well, and was recovered a mile downstream........

New Levee District Is Under Consideration........
Holt County, Missouri residents are looking for answers to flooding issues, as there are consistent levee breaches about every ten years. And they are tired of waiting for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to come up with solutions. Residents and farmers, Robert Drewes and Steve Cunningham have spoken to the Holt County commissioners about forming a levee district. The county commissioners have indicated that they support the idea of a levee district........

Lower Mississippi River Closed After Barge Collision........
On Monday evening, a barge collision occurred between a 26-barge tow being pushed by the 128 ft. Merrick Jones and the 87 ft. Dixie Express that was pushing 2 chemical barges. This caused the spill of the chemical, acrylonitrile. The leak has been halted, and another vessel was to arrive on scene Tuesday evening for lightering operations in order to remove the remaining acrylonitrile. Some 36 vessels were awaiting up and down stream for the re-opening of the River........

Florissant Teen Drowns In The Big Lake........
Early Monday morning, 17 year old Cole Schlogl of Florissant, Missouri, and another teen jumped off of a pontoon boat into the Big Lake for a last minute swim as the 'toon was returning to Woodlands Marina. Schlogl did not resurface. Authorities were alerted at 12:52 Monday morning. Responders recovered Schlogl at 4:07 am. Investigators are trying to determine if alcohol was a factor.........

Some of the fastest boats will be descending upon the Lake of the Ozarks August 23 - 29 for the 22nd Annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. It is rumored that two turbine-powered boats will be in attendance to push the Top Gun speed upwards of 210 MPH. The 2009 LOTO Shootout Top Gun ran 196 MPH. Captain Ron's Bar and Grill will be playing host to the event again this year........

While a new lock is being constructed at the Chickamauga Dam on the Tennessee River, the old lock is requiring a significant amount of repairs to stay operational. This year alone, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is spending $3.7 million on band-aids for the 70 year old lock. Currently, the lock is closed through August 16th, as crews are trying deal with a concrete growth issues. Since the lock began operations in 1940, the lock has grown 4 inches in height and about a foot in length........

New Oil Spill Created By Boat Collision........
Early Tuesday, a towboat or other workboat collided with an oil well in Bayou St. Dennis, Louisiana, lopping off the valve structure, allowing the release of natural gas and light oil. Cleanup crews have descended upon the scene and containment booms have been deployed. Federal officials have taken control of the scene, but do not know who owns the well, however, a contractor that takes care of wells gone wild is en route........

The
first record catch came in early July, when John West, of Republic, caught a
58-pound, 10.4-ounce striped bass at Bull Shoals Lake in Taney County. The
monster striper measured just a shade over 48 inches from nose to tail and
had a girth of 34.25 inches. The fish inhaled a 6-inch swim bait that West,
37, was casting from the bank with a spinning rod and reel. A swim bait is a
soft-bodied lure rigged with a weighted hook.
The
second record catch – a blue catfish – came in the early hours of July 20 on
the Missouri River near Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, just north of St.
Louis. Greg Bernal, of Florissant, and his friend, Janet Momphard, of St.
Charles, started fishing just after sunset. They fished one place until
12:30 a.m. Nothing much was happening, so they moved to another spot and
anchored about 100 feet from shore. Bernal, 47, noticed that the weather was
turning ugly.
July’s
third record fish was a 99-pound flathead catfish caught three days after
Bernal’s monster blue. Robert Neal Davidson, of Mokane, was with his father,
James L. Davidson, and his 9-year-old son, Drake Neal Davidson, when he
landed the fish. It was touch and go for a while, however.
