The Picture of the Day ...... was sent to us
by Capt'n Brad Blanton who hails out of ALton Marina in the boat ... "Slow
Dancin."
Hey Bill,
Photo Guy (Captain Roger Goodwin aboard his boat Controlled Kaos) at the
Alton Marina sent me this photo of Saturday night’s sunset taken outside the
Alton Marina while The Alton Marina ROCKED the Alton Bridge with a huge
party with The Ralph Butler Band and a Great BBQ provided by Wee Willie the
Pig BBQ.
A great time was had by the several hundred people
that showed up to Party Under the Bridge at the Alton Marina.

US Coast Guard news Release....
Two Boaters Rescued After 17 Hours in Water
HOUSTON - The crew of a towing vessel rescued two boaters Monday morning
after their vessel capsized Sunday afternoon in Trinity Bay.
The crew of the T/V Diamond Back rescued the two people at approximately 8
a.m. Monday morning. The survivors left in a small pleasure craft Sunday
from Eagle Point in Galveston County, and were forced into the water after
their vessel capsized at approximately 3 p.m. They reported that they were
unable to make a distress call.
A Coast Guard 25-foot Response Boat - Small from Station Houston is en route
to transport the two back to shore. Their survival is attributed to wearing
their life jackets and staying with their vessel after it capsized.
"Due to the circumstances of their situation, they were unable to make a
distress call," said Bill Segelken, an operations unit controller at Sector
Houston-Galveston. "The fact that they were wearing their life jackets,
significantly increased their ability to remain afloat throughout the
night."
"Staying with their vessel after it capsized, contributed to them being
visible and able to be rescued," he said.
According to the National Safe Boating Council, 85-90% of people who drown
in boating accidents are not wearing life jackets.

Another Large Catfish Caught On The Mississippi River........
While fishing Sunday
night, Rick Hastings was anchored out along the Missouri side of the
Mississippi River, when all of a sudden, his vessel and it's occupants was

fish for at least a half an hour, and were dragged close to a mile from
where they were fishing. The fishermen plan to take the catfish to the

Making Headway - Weekly Column
By Captain Larry Walker
How often have you needed information on something and found it on the
Internet? For today's mariners, there are marine web sites covering a host
of topics. The web addresses all have the prefix "http://www." The following
are a few boating oriented web sites (add the http://www. Prefix to each):
TIDE PREDICTIONS are available at the "co-ops.nos.noaa.gov/station_retrieve.shtml?type=Tide+Data"
web site and can give you up-to-date information for your local area. There
are many links to other sites for related information. If you are interested
in the annual tide tables, you can purchase them on Compact Disk from the
National Ocean Service (NOS).
NATIONAL OCEAN SERVICE (NOS) PUBLICATIONS of many kinds are available at the
"co-ops.nos.noaa.gov/pub.html" web site. There is a Tide and Current
glossary online with every "tide" related term complete with definition and
use. There is also a document called "Our Restless Tides" that explains the
basic astronomical factors that produce tides and tidal currents.
Most of us have heard the term "lunar tide" and associate the tidal action
only with the moon. There are many forces at work to move that much water
around on the planet earth. The moon has the greatest force on our tides,
but the effect of the sun is equal to approximately 46% of the effect of the
moon. The vertical movement of tidal waters (tide) and the horizontal
movement of those waters (tidal current) is fairly complex in its origin.
LOCAL NOTICES TO MARINERS can be reviewed on the U.S. Coast Guard's
“navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=lnmMain” web site. These weekly notices can also
be e-mailed to mariners at no charge and include information on inoperative
lights, changes in buoy locations and other information critical to
mariners. The notices reference the chart numbers that are affected and
allow you to update your charts. To Order Local Notices to Mariners for your
area, go to “avcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=LNMlistRegistration.”
GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS are at "rockyweb.cr.usgs.gov/outreach/gps/gps_questions_and_answers.html"
courtesy of the U.S. Coast Guard. Information is available on the status and
characteristics of the GPS satellite system. There is much information
available.
LICENSING FORMS can be obtained for the 6-Pack (OUPV) and the Masters
licenses at the "wegivethetest.com/pdfs/Application-Instructions-4-30-2010.pdf"
web site. Some of the forms are the application, the physical examination
form and the sea service form, just to name a few. These forms can be
downloaded using Adobe Acrobat Reader and are in "pdf" format.
Boating accident statistics of all kinds can be obtained at the
“uscgboating.org/statistics/accident_statistics.aspx” web site. There is a
wide variety of information available. It is worth reviewing this web site
and its links.
INLAND AND INTERNATIONAL NAVIGATION RULES can be reviewed at the
“navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=navRulesMain” web site courtesy of the U.S. Coast
Guard. There is even a link for ordering a copy of the navigation rules from
the government printing office at their Washington , D.C. office. However,
it is easier to purchase those publications locally. Merchants sell those
publications for the same price as the government.
It looks like our computers are just one more piece of electronics for our
boats! There are countless websites of interest to mariners. All you have to
do is type in a few key words and “CLICK.” Once again, welcome to
Cyber-Space!
Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!
Captain Larry Walker is the president of World Wide Marine
Training, Inc., a U.S. Coast Guard Approved facility authorized to give
examinations for captain's licenses up to 200 Ton Master, Able Seaman up to
Unlimited, STCW-95, Radar, ARPA and other Endorsements (www.fromthehelm.com)

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop
Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update.......
Day 247
08/09/2010
Happy Anniversary Mom
and Dad
Daily Stats
Start: 5:30 AM - Marinette, WI (Seagull Bar)
Finish 11:00 AM - Oconto, WI
Time: 5:30 hours
Daily dist: 21 miles
Total dist: 5000+
Companions: None
Weather: Partly cloudy, wind light and variable, 80’s
Notes: Considered running all the way to Green Bay but decided
not to.
Ahh… Today was a very good day for paddling, partly cloudy,
warm, and very little wind. With such nice conditions the miles
were flying by and before I knew it I was poised offshore from
the Oconto breakwater. Oconto was my destination for the day but
it was only 10:00 AM when I made it there. With only about 24
more miles to go, I seriously considered staying on the water
another seven hours to make it all the way to Green Bay today.
The hitch was that all the family that had planned on me
arriving tomorrow (many driving in from out of town) would be
completely unprepared for an early arrival....Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Two Rivers Marina
5th
Annual Boating For Life Labor Day Event.....
Hi Bill,
It is hard to believe but we are only 5 weeks from Labor Day. If you could
please let your readers know we will be having our 5th Annual Boating For
Life Labor Day Event at Two Rivers Marina. We will have a silent auction,
raffle off several baskets and sell event shirts all to benefit the Siteman
Cancer Center in St. Louis. Raffle tickets are $1 each and 5 for $6, Silent
Auction items will vary and t-shirts are $15 for children's medium through
adult X-large, adult XXL & XXXL are $17. We can ship any order for an extra
$3. Everyone can see the auction and raffle items at our Facebook Page as
they are available. There are some pretty great ones coming soon to join
those already listed.
I have enclosed a picture of this year's event shirt for viewing.
Maybe with the lack of river time this year you and your reader's might want
to take a ride north for Labor Day. I know Jamie and the Two Rivers Boat
Club have some great things planned.
Thanks as always for your support.
Happy, Healthy Boating to you all,

BOAT RACE & WASHERS TOURNAMENT
TWO GREAT EVENTS - ONE GREAT LOCATION
We are pleased to announce the First Annual Washer for Public Safety
Tournament to benefit BackStoppers. The tournament will take place:
Saturday, September 11th, 2010
Liberty Harbor in Portage Des Sioux
Our tournament will also be held in conjunction with the Boat Race
for BackStoppers which is being sponsored by the St. Charles
Municipal League.
I am writing on behalf of Washers for Public Safety to request your
help with this years tournament. Because this is a day-long event,
we look towards local businesses to help out in donatins for our
participants and spectators. With both the Boat Race and the Washers
Tournament at the same locaiton, we are expecting up to 10,000
spectators throughout the day. Also available to spectators will be
a Kids Village, Food and Beverages as well as Fireworks at the end
of the evening. Live music will be on-stage all day to include St.
Louis's own Joe Dirt and the Dirty Boys, Pearl Heart (finalist on
NBC's hit-show "Nashville Star") and Jeffrey Steele (one of
Nashville's most prolific
songwriters, who has written over 80 top ten country hits) among
other artists and bands.
While we will be happy to accept any donation for our event, I am
asking local businesses to assist with the silent auction and a lane
sponsorship. A lane sponsorship only costs $100.00 and would give
you name/logo recognition at the
lane.
Please seriously consider this request and let your community know
that you continue to support such a worthy cause as BackStoppers. If
you would like more information on the various events or
organizations, please visit our websites at:

Weather: Mostly sunny turned cloudy, SW wind 5-10mph 80’s
Notes: Entered Wisconsin at 5:50 PM EST (4:50 local time)
My father served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. Along with
a few stories about marching through the jungle with the marines
as a corpsman, I remember my dad talking about how, after weeks
out at sea, you could smell cities long before you could see
them. While I’ve never exactly been out to sea, I do know
exactly what he means by being able to smell cities. On this
trip I’ve only been away from civilization at most a couple
days. But in that time my nose quickly became so accustomed to
fresh air that when I did near a town I could almost always pick
up the faint smell of civilization. Unless there is some sort of
industry producing a smell that overshadows it, they all smell
much the same… like cooking meat mixed with car exhaust… think

Juvenile Gator Found In The Chicago River.........
Thursday
morning, a small alligator was spotted in a Chicago-land park,
however, attempts to apprehend the reptile failed. Friday
morning, a humane trap was set out, the gator was caught, and it
will soon be on it's way to a new home in warmer climes. The 2
1/2 foot long gator was most likely a discarded pet. It is
illegal to own an alligator as a pet in Illinois........

Yesteryear's
Picture of the Day
2007...... was
sent in by Darryl Vaughan of Winfield, Mo.
What a catch it was !
Bill,
I caught this blue cat Thursday, August 2nd, 2007 near Alton on the
Mississippi River. She was photographed and released.
It wasn’t a freight train hit. Pole just started going down and KEPT GOING!
The battle was on. I am by myself. Oh Cr@P!
Fought for a while, finally got her to the boat, holy smokes! Tried twice to
get her in net, she didn’t like that. Decided to give up on the net and
chucked it to the floor of the boat. Fought fish a while longer to wear her
down because I was going to have to lip her.
Looked downstream and here came Robert and Bev, a brother and sister that I
didn’t know. They saw that I was in a predicament and were motoring over to
help, keeping their distance till they got my attention. I motioned them to
come on over. In the mean time the fish came to the side of the boat and I
was able to get one hand in her mouth. She didn’t blow up so I put my rod
down and got my other hand in her mouth. Placed both my feet on the gunwale
and PULLED. The fish and I both slid onto the floor of the boat in one fluid
motion.
I lay there for a few seconds, wore out, looked down at Robert and Bev. Then I
stuck my hands in the air, whooped and hollered and they did the same. They
were really happy for me.
They tied up to my boat and Robert came aboard, helped me weigh it and took
photos for me.
If Robert and Bev read this I just want to say thanks for your help!

Went fishing this morning (07/27/08) with Josh and RiverBill jr., out at

too. Included a few pics, from casting on Phil's submerged (again) patio, to
the catch 'o the day, who obliged by jumping in the boat! Too bad none of us
caught any fish the conventional way !

Mississippi River Near St. Cloud,

Increased Rain Runoff Swells Mississippi River........
Compared to previous
years, the amount of runoff into the Mississippi River has doubled. The
reason is the increased rainfall amounts have saturated the ground, so that
it cannot hold any more water, leaving the remainder to run to the river.
The U.S. Geological Survey has stated that the amount of water reaching the
Mississippi River close to Royalton is running about 6,800 cubic feet per
second. The average amount of water flow for this time of year is closer to
3,210 cfs.........

Authorities are using
boats, divers and a helicopter to search for a man missing in Lake Michigan
since Friday. The man and three others went for a late night swim, jumping
off of a sailboat that then drifted off. 2 women were rescued, and the body
of a man has been recovered. The Illinois Conservation Police has also been
using sonar in an effort to locate the missing man. Saturday, the ICP had
to stop using sonar due to the number of boats on the water.......

Hudson River Between Albany And New

Home Made Vessel Completes Journey Down The Hudson........
Recently, Dallas Trombley
and Rob Babcock-Ellis completed a 135 mile trip down the Hudson River, in a
home made vessel, using no fossil fuels. This is a feat they had been
attempting for the past 5 years. In 2006, their first vessel sank only one
day into the trip. In 2007, their vessel was torched by vandals. 2008 saw
their vessel sink in a rainstorm. 2009's boat sank during a trial run, and
it's replacement broke up shortly into the voyage. The successful 2010
voyage was not without troubles however, as their 15 foot vessel was taking
on 60 gallons of water per hour, a battery powering the boat's electric
motor exploded and their rowing apparatus kept breaking.........

Lake Of The Ozarks
Boat Gas Prices Up Over The Weekend........
The wholesale price of
boat gas has swelled upward, even though the crude supply has grown over the
past month. Lake boaters should see marina pump prices between $3.09 -
$3.29/gallon this weekend. Some higher volume marinas have increased their
prices by 10 cents. It is anticipated that by the end of August, boat gas
prices may in fact drop thanks in part to economic recovery concerns and
unemployment numbers hovering around 9.5%

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop
Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update.......
Day 244
08/06/201
It took a late-night / early-morning effort, but I had to take
advantage of a decent connection to finally get the blog up to
date. Be sure to take a quick look at days 241 to 244 to see
what's been going on.
Daily Stats
Start: 8:00 AM - Fayette, MI (Fayette State Park)
Finish 1:30 PM - Park Place of the North Campground (Escanaba,
MI)
Time: 5:30 hours
Daily dist: 21 miles
Total dist: 4500+
Companions: None
Weather: Partly cloudy, north wind, 70’s
Notes: Ran an empty kayak again
After the forty mile grind the other day it was nice to put in a
simple twenty mile day today. The paddling wouldn’t have been
all that exceptional except for the fact that by crossing Big
Bay de Noc (10 miles) then Little Bay de Noc (6 miles) I put the
last two major crossings of the trip behind me. Crossings
(rather than coastal paddles) leave you a bit more exposed than
coastal tours and as a result require a bit more attention. It’s
nice to know that for the rest of the trip I can keep the
relative safety of land nearby....Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html
Follow the progress of Jake the Kayaker while on his trip around
the great loop.

Stingray Visits Mud Island........
Recently, Lyn Grimmig
headed to Mud Island to check out the boat races being held on the
Mississippi River. What she saw was something about the size of her truck
hood swimming along the surface of the River. She took a photo of the
object. Her photo was shown to a Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency
wildlife manager as well as the curator of fishes at the Tennessee Aquarium
in Chattanooga, who concurred that the object appeared to be a stingray.
Saltwater creatures have visited Memphis before; in 2006 a manatee was
observed in the River........

Asian
Carp Update
Could The
Carp Be A Plant?
Researchers recently
revealed findings that indicate that a three foot long Asian carp found in a
Chicago waterway may have been put there. Scientists performed tests on the
carp and found chemical markers that suggest the fish was not a new arrival,
and as such, did not evade the electric barriers. Jim Garvey, a fisheries
biologist with Southern Illinois University Carbondale stated that the
findings were not definite due to incomplete data and were based upon a few
assumptions........

From now through November or December, the Corps will be increasing the
amounts of water released from the upstream reservoirs in an effort to make
way for next year's water storage needs........

Lake Of The Ozarks
Looking Forward To Happier Times On Blue Bayou........
Roger Neigbors is
returning to the Lake of the Ozarks in "Blue Bayou", for the 2010 Lake of
the Ozarks Shootout. Blue Bayou is Neigbors' 42 foot Fountain Poker Run
boat that did not place during the 2009 Shootout, but did manage to reach 97
MPH with the legendary Bob Teague on the sticks. Neigbors states that the
race requires intense concentration for about 45 minutes, and that he
definitely doesn't think about work while he is out there........

World Circumnavigations
14 Year Old Will Weigh Anchor Soon.........
Laura Dekker, a 14 year
old Dutch sailor, intends to become the world's youngest solo
circumnavigator. This news comes after the June rescue of Abby Sunderland,
who at 16 years of age, was attempting the same feat. Dekker's trip had been
put on hold by Dutch authorities who raised concerns over the youth's safety
and psychological health. Dekker intends to put into ports along the way in
order to resupply, rest and meet up with family........

Fishy
Stories
Large Marlin Attacks Boat During Billfish Tourney........
After being
hooked during the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, a
giant blue marlin attacked the press boat. The fish slammed
into the side of the press boat, and seemed to be unfazed by the
collision. After 20 minutes of fighting, the angler reeled the
fish in close to the press boat, when the line went slack.
Apparently, the fight was too much for the tackle, as it was the
hook that broke........

Marine Assistance

Sea Tow Wins Trademark Color........
Recently, the U.S. Patent
and Trademark Office awarded a certificate of registration to Sea Tow
establishing the color yellow as meeting federal trademark and registration
requirements as well as confirming Sea Tow's exclusive right to use the
color in conjunction with it's marine assistance service. This hard-won
victory protects Sea Tow franchisees from imposters that paint their hulls
yellow in an effort to "affiliate" themselves with Sea Tow........

Picture of Kinders...looks like it is submerging...
Winfield dam doesn't need a lock to get thru...ha! Just drive over the
dam... I don't think they would like that.. In fact, one gate appears to be

Illinois
River's Alton Pool
Illinois River Restoration On Hold........
Efforts to restore the
ecology of the Illinois River Basin has been put on hold, as funding is an
issue. Back in 2007, the Illinois River Basin Comprehensive Plan pointed
out the need for a blanket assessment and restoration plan for island and
side channels throughout the Illinois River's Alton Pool. Over the years,
the Illinois River has lost a considerable amount of crucial spawning,
nursery and over-wintering areas for fish, as well as habitats for aquatic
species, plants and waterfowl........

Gulf
Of Mexico Oil Spill Update
Broken
Well Head Jammed With Drill Mud........
Wednesday, BP made a
significant step in arresting the Gulf of Mexico oil spill when they packed
the damaged well head with heavy drilling mud. Retired Coast Guard Admiral
Thad Allen stated that stopping the upward thrust of oil and gas is a major
step in the right direction, and that he has authorized pumping cement into
the well through the top. Allen further stated that the success of these
operations does not discount the fact the well will not be permanently
sealed until one of the two relief wells are completed........

Wednesday, a couple was
lucky to get off of their boat with the clothes on their back. After taking

Manufacturer
Sea Ray Lays Off Workers........
Tuesday, the
Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development
announced that Sea Ray Boats had laid off 18 workers at one of
their assembly plants at Forks of the River Industrial Park.
Over the past few years, Sea Ray parent company Brunswick, has
whittled down their Knoxville-area workforce and production as
part of their restructuring plan. In January 2009, Brunswick
mothballed the Sea Ray Riverview Plant in Forks of the River,
and in May, the plant was up for sale. Brunswick is still
operating another plant at Forks of the River........

Insurance Update
Congressman Hare Pushing Flood Insurance Reform........
Recently, U.S.
Representative Phil Hare, D-Rock Island, stated that he expects the passage
of the Flood Insurance Reform Priorities Act. The legislation would allow
property owners five more years before they are required to purchase flood
insurance. The bill would also establish a homeowners advocate to work with
FEMA, grant credits to communities that make improvements to flood control
systems and allow for flood insurance payment plans........

Mobile, Alabama
Proclamation for US Coast Guards 220th year of Service
City of Mobile, Ala. formally recognizes Coast Guard's 220th year of
service
MOBILE, Ala. — The Mayor of Mobile, Samuel L. Jones, formerly
recognized the U.S. Coast Guard, Tuesday, as it celebrates 220 years
of service to America.
Issuing an official proclamation, Mayor Jones noted the Coast
Guard's roles in Mobile's maritime commerce, aids to navigation,
recreational boating safety, maritime environmental response, port
safety and security as well as its role in national defense.
“Coast Guardsmen are agile, adaptable and multi-missioned,” said
Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert J. Papp, Jr. “Born as revenue
cuttermen, lighthouse keepers, steamboat inspectors and surfmen, we
have expanded to meet the maritime needs of our nation. As Coast
Guard men and women, we share a bond of pride in our rich heritage
and a common purpose to uphold our honorable traditions.”
The Coast Guard began its service to America in 1790 within the
Treasury Department as the Revenue Marine, later renamed the Revenue
Cutter Service. The Revenue Cutter Service joined with the U.S.
Lifesaving Service in 1915 to create the Coast Guard. The U.S.
Lighthouse Service was added to the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939,
followed by the Steamboat Inspection Service in 1946. The Coast
Guard transferred from the Treasury Department to the Department of
Transportation in 1967 and to the Department of Homeland Security in
2003.
“We are still keepers of the lights, but we also now patrol far more
distant waters,” said Papp. “We readily go wherever there are
important, difficult and dangerous maritime duties to be performed.”
The Coast Guard will mark its 220th year of service Wednesday.

The

more details of the day when I have time....Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

A Note From Little John and Family
Hi All its Little John
It has been a very tuff five days.
I have learned a lot about my family and friends.
I have lived in my house in Woodland for over twenty
years.
Every one here knows who I am and what I stand for, but
know nothing about my past.
I have learned that it was a huge mistake on my part for
not sharing it.
Maybe I was embarrassed , or took it lightly, I am not
sure.
Maybe this will help one of my friends out there.
I got the call on Sat. Morning at 3.20 AM that my mom
had passed away.
We were in Ky. Ready to start racing that morning.
A tuff decision whether to stay and race or to pack and
leave, was solved by my little brother.
We did our best at the races, but the heart just was not
there.
It was not over thirty hours from the time I got the
call in Kentucky that we were with my family in Iowa.
When we pulled into the house to unhook the trailer and
get fresh cloths, there were a few friends here to help
with what ever we needed.
That is when I made one of the BIGGEST mistakes of my
life.
One of my friends, and She knows who she is, wanted to
know the arrangements so they could send flowers.
I was tired and crabby, and replied in a very rude way.
She was a simple person, in a town from nowhere, DON’T
WORRY ABOUT IT.
I soo want to take that back, and I do sincerely
apologize
Does not matter, She figured it out, and several people
went together and sent flowers.
Who ever went in on this, needs to know, that it was a
full Catholic funeral in a little town from nowhere.
Their flower arrangement was, and will stay, on the
Alter as long as they last.
They were at the head of my moms casket.
HOW can I say thank you for that???
If I may please go on, I would like to share a few
things about my life, and family, that after over fifty
years, I have finally figured out.
My mom not only graduated from high school, but
graduated from business college in 1940. She gave all
that up to marry my dad and go farming.
My parents raised eight of us on a 100 acre farm in
Iowa.
When the depression hit, things went really bad.
EVERY ONE did what they had to do to survive.
My dad was great with show horses and Clydesdales, and
took a job in Chicago.
He actually drove one of the original Budweiser Team for
a short while ( I had pictures before the 93 flood)
My mom stayed and handled the farm.
She and my two sisters milked between 12 and 15 cows
twice a day.
We did raise some hogs for our own food, but not a lot.
But the big deal was chickens, We had a lot.
My job at five or six years old, was to wash and crate
eggs.
What no one knew is that my dads job was basically a
cover, he was selling eggs in the black market. With
proabission, and the depression, they were more valuable
than alcohol.
They did get through this, and our family went on.
A little more about my family
The first time that I saw carpet in a house, was my
first rented house when I got married. We had linoleum
and wood.
We all looked forward to Saturday night, We each got
twenty five cents.
That got into the movie, got pop corn, and a soda.,
maybe a snack to take home.
WE ALL thought our life was good, We knew no different
life.
There were no child labor laws, There was no welfare or
unemployment.
If you did not work, you did not eat.
When you talk about child abuse.
If my mom did not tan my little brother or me at least
weekly, we thought she was either sick or did not love
us any more. We had it coming at least ten more times
than we got it.
I need to get off of this, We sound way to muck like the
Waltons.
With all of us kids and our problems, I guess my mom
needed a little time to herself.
She became active in a few organizations in the next
forty years.
Sacred Heart Church Board, South Wapsi Workers, PTO,
PTA, American Legion Auxillary, Four H , and Farm Bureaw
Womens League.
I think one of the highlights in her life in 1996, was
becoming the Farm Bureau QWEEN.
She wore the same dress that either her mother, or
grandmother wore (I am not sure)
On that date,100 years before. (She was a pack rat)
Along with this honor, was a paid trip to Washington DC
to meet with higher powers.
I am not sure who.
I do know that it was one of the few times that she left
the state of Iowa.
In closing
I wish the family that I have grown to be a part of here
in the last twenty years could know my real family.
PEOPLE whether you are a parent or a child, and if you
have taken the time to read this far, PLEASE make a
call, write a note, or send an E mail (my mom never
figured that out or God help us all)
YOU ALL HAVE SOMETHIG THAT I CAN NOT RECOVER

Bill,
I was out Sunday afternoon and they were working on
removing the "last remains" of Shakey's. Just about all
has been removed that was above water. Quite a contrast
to the pix's I took a week ago. The barges in the
picture bound the area where Sharkeys was.
There was several former customers watching the
operation and commented how sad it was too.. They had
been coming to Sharky's for the last ten years and
enjoyed it...it will be missed

Making Headway - Weekly Column
By Captain Larry Walker
I once accompanied some friends on boat trip across the Pamlico Sound to the
Outer Banks of North Carolina. They were new to boating and were on their
first overnight adventure. That weekend I was reminded of a few things that
new boaters don't always think about.
During the trip, our captain had removed his eyeglasses to clean off the
residue from the salt spray. I observed that he couldn't see much past our
bow pulpit without his glasses. It was not extraordinarily rough, but not
calm either. He commented "I better be careful not to drop my glasses over
the side." I asked if he had a spare pair of glasses, to which he replied
"yes, but I never thought to bring them."
My friend suggested that a list of things for the "novice" boater to
remember to bring on a cruise might be in order. If you are new to boating,
there are several things that you may not think about until it is too late.
The following are a few ideas:
EYEGLASSES - If you are the only qualified boat operator on the trip and if
you are "blind as a bat" without your glasses, keep an extra pair onboard.
Should you lose them over the side of the boat or off the dock, retrieval is
usually next to impossible.
DOCK LINES - Most of us don't give much thought to the dock lines at our
homeport. Many boaters have left all of their dock lines back at their
marina and pulled into a "transient" slip only to remember that they have
none, or very few, dock lines onboard. Keep an ample supply on hand. You
never know what the configuration of the transient slip will be and how many
lines you'll need.
FENDERS - Your home dock is probably well set-up and fitted with fenders,
rubber bumpers or other arrangements to protect your boat from rough edges.
Don't make that assumption about a transient dock. The piles may be spaced
far apart, they may have "unfriendly surfaces" or otherwise be unsuitable
without fenders. Stow your fenders onboard so that you will always have them
when you need them.
GARDEN HOSE AND NOZZLE - You will need one when you are in transit to
replenish your fresh water supply and to wash your boat down.
ANCHOR AT THE READY - Your anchor should be more than just "onboard," but
ready to use at a moment's notice. You can't predict when your engine may
quit, your prop may become fouled or what the current may be when those
things happen. You should always be ready to "drop the hook" in a heartbeat
to avoid running aground, going on the rocks or being carried "who knows
where" by the current.
A SMALL TOOL BOX - Include a sampling of screw drivers, wrenches, pliers,
etc.
SPARE PARTS - Fuses, light bulbs, fan belts and other replacement parts
should be on hand, depending on the age of your boat.
CASH - You may need the services of a mechanic or towboat who will not
accept a check or credit card.
There's nothing on this "short" list that you shouldn't have on hand
someplace. If you keep these things onboard, you'll be glad that you did!
Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

Training, Inc., a U.S. Coast Guard Approved facility authorized to give
examinations for captain's licenses up to 200 Ton Master, Able Seaman up to

Great River Rumble Heading Down The Mississippi.........
Sunday morning, kayakers
and paddlers shoved off for a week long journey down the Mississippi River,
called the Greart River Rumble. Concerns were high that the Rumble
would be cancelled due to the high River levels. However, permits were
granted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Natural
Resources, as well as homeland security officials, who felt that the
relative safety of the boats, in addition to the number of safety vessels
present warranted permission to undertake the journey........

Missouri River
Higher River Levels Ease River Use Conflicts........
The squabbling over water
usage on the Missouri River has cooled off, thanks to rains and massive snow
melts. Downstream, barges are able to move cargo without fear of
grounding, and upstream, boaters and fishermen have plenty of water to
enjoy. However, all is not well. The six Missouri River
reservoirs are storing about 66 million acre feet of water, which is about 9
million acre feet more than the Corps would like to see. The U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers is attempting to get rid of excessive waters in the Missouri
River reservoirs, without causing flooding downstream..........

Sad News......
Sandi Hampel passed away Friday
Bill,
Sandi Hampel passed away Friday. She was a dear friend of mine and
her and her husband has been on the river forever. I don’t know
about the arrangements and I know the family is very private about
such matter however, I must let everyone know what she meant to me.
All the painting on the wall at Cedar Hill was done by Sandi Hampel.
Dear Sandi,
You will never know how if feel about you. You always made us feel
great, the first time I was at Lake Center at the big Labor Day
party you came up when we knew no one and made us feel welcome. You
for the first women that spoke to me when we all anchor out in mason
shut. You are the first to show my son boobs. He is 28 today and
still talks about how good they are and you gave him peso in Mexico.
We anchored out and laughed and laughed. We have road tripped and
laughed and laughed. You taught me how to dit’s on a boat. You just
move stuff around. You gave me a great dance partner at the lake
that everyone talked about the next day, then we won Sloppy Joe’s.
Image that. You taught me how to dress the way I feel. Always good
and gaudy. But you always pulled it off so much better than me. I
can never tell you how much I loved you, how much I respected you.
How much I wanted to be like you. How good a friend you were. God
broke the mold when he made you. There will never be a more kind and
loving person on this earth. May you Rest in peace. You will be
missed every day.
