Tuesday afternoon my wife Joan and I were enjoying Enterprise Island when this yellow sea plane landed and pulled up to the beach. A very nice man got out and started cleaning off the pontoons and polishing up plane it was a pretty cool site.

On Sunday morning with my coffee cup in hand, I walked to the end of the dock. Looking down river I said to myself, go get the camera. I got back in time to get these shots. You can see the Grafton Ferry and the Lighthouse silhouetted against the sun and clouds. I love this time of year.

Hat Island

It appears that Hat Island is the topic of discussion once again as to what is private property and what is public property. The Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police Officers have taken action in the past arresting subjects for trespassing on this island. We are not doing this to pick on them. We have a complaint from all the landowners of the islands around Hat Island and Hat Island itself. The Calhoun County States Attorney has told us that the property is private land. As a result, we will continue to arrest subjects because the landowners have a complaint.

The internet is not the place to argue if this land is private or public. This needs to be done in a court of law. If you get arrested, then fight it. In the last several years, everyone has pled guilty.

The easiest way for everyone would be one of these two options. 1) You could file a civil suit yourself against the landowner or 2) get the Corp of Engineers to take up the fight with the landowner.

Until this problem is resolved in court, please stay off those islands. We could be working on several other things to protect the public and resources, but when the landowner complains, we must respond.

Meramec River Near Fenton, Missouri

   Fenton Finishing Up Flood Buyouts........

With the recent purchases of six houses in a flood-prone area along the Meramec River, the city of Fenton is closer to converting that land into a park.  Grants from the federal government allowed the buyout.  There are only two more privately held properties left along Larkin-Williams Road.   Over the years, Fenton has been occasionally buying up area properties since the floods of 1982.  City officials are waiting for the next round of grants before initiating negotiations for the last two properties........

   M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center Grand Opening October 2, 2010

The Grand Opening of the new M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center is set for October 2, 2010. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials and the Mark Twain Lake Visitor and Educational Resource Center Committee extend invitations to everyone to visit the new facility. The Visitor Center is located at the south end of the Clarence Cannon Dam, 12 miles south of Monroe City, Missouri, off of Route J.

Asian Carp Update

   Carp May Go Hungry In Lake Michigan........

Asian carp may have been beaten to the Lake Michigan dinner table by the tiny quagga mussel.  Gary Fahnenstiel, senior ecologist with NOAA's Great Lakes Environments Research Laboratory, stated that the quagga mussel has already depleted the plankton supply and made the Lake inhospitable to the carp.  Duane Chapman, a fisheries biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, is not so sure.  In fact, Chapman is working with researchers to determine what the carp might dine on in the Lake when the plankton supply runs short........

Missouri And Mississippi Rivers

   Missouri River Won't Help Restore Louisiana Coast........

Since the Missouri River is the longest tributary of the Mississippi River, and drains an enormous watershed in the western United States and Canada, it has been credited with contributing about half of the mud that created the Mississippi River delta.   Estimates on the amount of sediment deposited at the delta prior to 1900 are around 400 million metric tons per year.  Now, the Rivers carry less than half of that.  These days, sediment is being retained in the reservoirs behind six dams.........

Rock River Near Rock Falls, Illinois

    Low River Levels Shut Down Power Plant.........

Residents of Rock Falls, Illinois will be seeing higher power bills, as their hydroelectric power plant is not currently generating electricity.  The reason is that the levels of the Rock Rover are too low.  The low River levels were caused by a damaged gate in the Upper Dam........

    2010 Duck Season Promises Plentiful Ducks, Generous Limits, Spotty Habitat


JEFFERSON CITY–The 2010 waterfowl season promises a mixed bag for hunters, with more ducks but less habitat than usual. The winners will be those hunters who look for opportunities outside the usual hunting hot spots.

WATERFOWL POPULATIONS

Resource Scientist Andy Raedeke said annual surveys of waterfowl nesting grounds in the northern United States and Canada show continued strong numbers of most duck and goose species. Raedeke, the Missouri Department of Conservation’s waterfowl expert, said the total number of breeding ducks seen in mid-continent surveys was approximately 41 million. That is down three percent from 2009, but still 21 percent above the long-term average.

The number of mallards – the mainstay of mid-continent duck hunting – mirrored the overall trend, similar to last year but still 12 percent above the long-term average.

Eight out of 11 species tracked in the annual surveys were above long-term averages. ...Click here to continue reading this news article on the MDC website

   Battery Powered Yacht In The Works........

Recently, International Battery announced that they are teaming up with Electric Marine Propulsion to construct hybrid power units for large vessels.  On September 21, a 60 foot Tag Yachts catamaran, "Tang", was launched, and is powered by wind-generated electricity, that is stored lithium-ion batteries from International Battery.  When the wind is too light to produce power, twin 22 kilowatt generators kick in to charge the batteries as needed.  Currently, the vessel is undergoing testing off the coast of South Africa, and will be sailing to it's owner later in the year........

It is a beautiful morning at Grafton Harbor and the pelicans are back.
I hope that you have had the experience of seeing the pelicans traveling by river. They fly single file diving a soaring back up again over and over again.

    Lewis And Clark Tower To Get Upgrades........

Over the next few months, the recently dedicated Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower will be getting some upgrades.  In the works are plans for an amphitheater, picnic shelters, a prairie grass wetland, plantings, lighting and interpretive stations.  The upgrades should be finished by spring and will be funded by state and federal grants.  The three tiered observation tower has drawn more than 11,000 visitors since it's May opening........

Missouri River Projects

   Corps' Missouri River Plan Shouldn't Affect Dead Zone........

Tuesday, a study was released determining that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' plan to deposit tons of sediment into the Missouri River as a way to recreate habitat would not significantly affect the size of the Gulf of Mexico "dead zone".  The idea for the plan is to create shallow, slow moving habitats for fish and other wildlife.  Official raised concerns that the sediment may contain nitrogen and phosphorous that would contribute to the "dead zone".  The Corps had requested the study two years ago........

Mississippi River Near Lansing, Iowa

   High Waters Cause Houseboats To Break Loose........

Monday afternoon, the high level of the Mississippi River caused 12 houseboats to break loose from their moorings and float free.  Crews also searched for a reported gas leak, but did not find any leaks.  Officials have reported that all of the houseboats have been rounded up........

Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa

    Docks Wash Away From The Missouri River Boat Club........

High water levels on the Missouri River as well as large trees conspired to wash away 18 docks and 14 boats from the Missouri River Boat Club.  All the boats have been rounded up, but the majority of the docks are a total write-off.  The Dakota City Fire Department utilized their rescue boat to corral the vessels.  Club members will rebuild the docks over the winter, and expect to have repairs completed by spring........

Ethanol Update

    EPA's Ethanol Decision Coming Soon........

Within a few days, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to announce their decision on whether or not to allow an increase in the content of ethanol in gasoline by 50%.  Currently, the level of ethanol in gasoline is 10%, and the proposal is to bump that up to 15%.  BoatU.S. is urging recreational boaters to go to BoatUS.com/gov to voice your concerns on ethanol to the President, and request that the EPA be required to complete E15 testing........

Lund Boat Company is moving their Crestliner plant from Little Falls, Minnesota to New York Mills, Minnesota.  The move may create jobs in New York Falls, but at the cost of around 180 jobs in Little Falls.  Crestline production is winding down, and the Little Falls plant should close by the end of the year........

Here is a summary I sent to some friends:



Well, Randy did awesome!!

This was a national race so there were 27 boats in his class compared to a normal 10-12 every other race. All of the 27 boats ran on Friday and Saturday to fight for only 16 spots in the finals. Randy fought hard and qualified at #13 out of the 16. His qualifying run was a 7.05 which normally would be one of the top spots but EVERYONE had their boats tuned in great. In fact, two of the boats ran perfect 7.000 and there were two more at 7.001 and 7.002.

Sunday was the final race day for the 16 boats that qualified. Randy, being ranked #13, had to go against higher ranked boats each time. In the first round he beat the #5 guy and in the quarterfinals he knocked out the #1 guy who ran the perfect 7.000 the previous day. He then won the semi final heat and was into the finals. He red lighted in the finals (went too early) but the guy who beat him had been quick on the clock with 0.01 to 0.05 reaction times so the only way Randy could win was if he took a chance at the starting line. It didn’t work but he still took home the runner-up title and a nice check. By the time the ceremony was over and we got everything loaded, it was late and we didn’t pull into Little John’s until 5:00 am this morning.

And today is just another day at the office…whew

    River Expected To Crest At 19 Feet........

The city officials in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin are expecting to see the Mississippi River crest at 19 feet a little later this week.  Flood stage in Prairie du Chien is 16 feet.  Prairie du Chien city administrator, Aaron Kramer stated that the Mississippi River should pass 16 feet by Tuesday evening, and the crest should arrive Friday afternoon........

   High Nitrogen Not Farmer's Fault........

Farmers have been using the same amount of nitrogen as they were 30 years ago, but the agricultural practices that have been developed allow the nitrates to rapidly move from the field to the waterway.  The tile drainage system was a great breakthrough in the 19th and 20th centuries and allowed lands previously too wet to farm become very productive.  Recently, researchers from the University of Illinois and Cornell University found that fertilizer is but one cause of the high nitrogen content of the Mississippi River that contributes to the Gulf of Mexico dead zone........

Oh, the weather outside is frightful! Tropical weather would sure be delightful! However, that's one thing that Santa can't bring this year, unless it involves a plane ticket!

For those of you that are cruising south this year, it’s time to go! A late departure gives you one more thing to think about. That is, survival in cold water. While we don't anticipate doing any swimming outside as winter approaches, we all know someone who has involuntarily gone over the side.

If you find yourself in cold water, there are a few "do's and don'ts" to consider. Once immersed in frigid water, it is a little late to try to reason out what might be the appropriate course of action to ensure your survival. A common misconception is that physical activity will keep your body temperature up while in cold water. Not so!

Hypothermia, the most common cause of fatalities among victims of shipwrecks, is defined as the "lowering of the body's core temperature to a critical level." What actually happens is that below a certain body temperature, your basic bodily functions begin to shut down, which can ultimately lead to death. In cold water, physical activity is the last thing that you should engage in.

Imagine that you put two rocks in a campfire long enough for them to become red-hot. Then, take them both out. Put one of them in front of an electric fan. Put the other in a pot of cold water. The rock in front of the fan will be hot for quite a while. The rock in the cold water will be cool in a few seconds.

The ability of water to cool something down is infinitely greater than the ability of air. Once you are in the water, any heat generated by physical activity will be miniscule as compared to the effect of the cold water in lowering your body temperature. The idea is to remain as motionless as is possible.

There are some precautions that you can take in the event that you think you will end up in the cold water. First, wear as much clothing as possible, short of restricting “necessary movement.” Concentrate on your hands, feet, head and neck, where much of your body heat may easily be lost. Button, zip and otherwise close up every opening before entering the water. Of course, these precautions are not feasible for an accidental fall overboard.

Once in the water, any unnecessary movement will cause you to "pump" warmer water out of your clothing. That warmer water will be displaced by colder water. The more motion there is, the more warm water will be "pumped" out. Less motion is better, except for purposes like attracting the attention of potential rescuers, etc.

In the event that there are several persons in the water, it is helpful to get into a "huddle" which will shield about half of your body form the motion of the wave action. Every little bit helps. Most people will become unconscious in 33-degree water in about 15 minutes and will expire in between 15 and 45 minutes. In 40 to 50 degree water, most people will be unconscious in 1-2 hours and will expire in 1-6 hours.

Cold water is something to be reckoned with, so be careful!

   New Kansas City Span Opens........

Monday, the barricades to the new Christopher S. Bond bridge were removed to allow 1 northbound lane of I-29/35 to cross the Missouri River.  By the end of the year, all lanes are expected to be opened, which is six months ahead of schedule.  The new span is replacing the Paseo Bridge, that will be removed in portions in 2011........

    Storm and Hail Killed Fish and Canada Geese

According to a news report on the Missouri Department of Conservation website.... severe hail from thunderstorms in the Kansas City area killed fish and Canadian Geese at a Northland lake.

Suddenly chilled water temperatures caused the fish kill and falling hailstones probably killed the geese.

The hail fell when microburst thunderstorms rolled across the Kansas City area on Sept. 18 with hail stones more than five inches in diameter in some areas. The hail was so deep that snow plows had to clear streets.

It also caused a sudden water temperature change that killed catfish, bass, bluegill and carp in some lakes.

   Olympian Victorious In 2 Dam Days Marathon.........

Mike Herbert, an Olympic medalist from Rogers, Arkansas, took the top spot in the solo class of the first annual 91 mile 2 Dam Days marathon on the Lake of the Ozarks.  Herbert also completed the completed the race with the fastest time and pocketed a cool $2,400 in prize money.  The race was hosted by the Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance........

    9th Riverfront Cleanup Was Saturday........

Chad Pregracke and his Living Lands and Waters crew were in town Saturday to help volunteers clean up the Mississippi River at St. Louis.  Over 200 volunteers from Anheuser Busch turned out to participate in the one day cleanup.  It was anticipated that 10 tons were picked up, including a chest of drawers, refrigerators, and propane tanks among other things........

Mississippi River History

    Bloody Island, September 27, 1817

Thomas Hart Benton and Charles Lucas were both lawyers, and during an 1816 trial, a quarrel between the pair erupted.  On August 4, 1817 at a polling place, Lucas publicly challenged Benton's right to vote.  Benton fired back that he would not acknowledge accusations made by any puppy that crosses his path.  Lucas, furious, challenged Benton to a duel.  Nearly 2 weeks later, the pair met on Bloody Island for a duel at 30 paces.  Both were wounded, and ended up back on Bloody Island on September 27, 1817 for another duel.  This time, Benton was the victor........

Five Tips for "Green" Winterizing a Boat

How To Put a Boat Away for the Winter and Protect the Environment
 

ALEXANDRIA, Va., September 23, 2010 - Boat Owners Association of The United States has these five tips to help boaters be good stewards of the environment while they put their boats to bed for winter's long lay-up period:

Shrinkwrap recycling starts in the fall: While many boaters know that shrinkwrap is recycled in the spring, installing shrinkwrap in the fall also generates waste material. Ask your marina or club to set up a recycling program now to recycle the scrap leftover from covering boats. Shrinkwrap should also be separated from other trash. Putting it in a dumpster that is open to other refuse makes it unusable to recyclers. In addition, anytime shrinkwrap is recycled it must be "clean": ropes, tie-downs, zippers, or plastic vents should be removed or else the wrap won't be picked up by recyclers.

Know your antifreeze: Be sure to winterize the engine and freshwater system with safe, non-toxic "marine" or "RV" antifreeze that contains propylene glycol. This fluid is most often a pink color, but can also come in other colors (such as purple, orange or blue) that offer increased freeze protection. Never use automotive antifreeze (ethylene glycol), which is toxic to the environment and can cause serious illness if used in fresh water systems.

The fluid bonanza: Winterizing a boat's motor and outdrive creates quarts of waste oils. Collect and save these fluids for your marina's or local gas station's oil recycling program. It's okay to put all of these oils in the same container but be to sure ask where it should go - placing the container simply on the ground near the collection tank can put a marina at risk of fines (and can be easily spilled). Also don't forget to have a supply of absorbent materials to handle drips when winterizing the engine, outdrive or gear cases.

Go for the washpad: If you are going to pressure wash you own boat, ask your marina where the best place is. Many marinas have washpads designed to prevent contaminants from entering the water. If none is available or if you are at home, use a tarp under the boat to capture any debris. Also try to use an environmentally friendly boat soap when washing down the topsides before you put her away.

Try a clean marina: Looking for a new marina or boat yard to haul and store your boat this winter? Try selecting a certified "clean marina" that can help make green winterizing easier. Clean marinas follow established environmentally friendly practices and there are programs in over 20 states. Mississippi River At St. Paul, Minnesota

   St. Paul Expects To See Flood Stage Wednesday........

The National Weather Service has predicted that the Mississippi River will rise above it's 14 foot flood stage late Wednesday morning.  By Friday evening, the River is expected to reach 17.9 feet.  When the waters reach 17 feet, secondary flood walls are installed at the St. Paul airport.  Back on March 24th, the Mississippi River crested at 18.4 feet........

    Levee Breach Occurs Along The Wisconsin River........

Sunday, a levee failed on the Wisconsin River, inundating an access road to Blackhawk Park.  It was not known how many of the 300 odd residents did not heed the evacuation order and remained in the area when the road was closed.  Although high water is nothing new to the local residents, this amount of water is not typical.........

    August Sees Boat Sales Fall........

The bad news is that fiberglass boat sales fell yet again during August, dropping more than 21% from last year's numbers.  In the 14 to 30 foot segment, sales of fiberglass vessels fell be 22.6%, and personal watercraft sales fell by 20%.  The good news, is that these numbers are an improvement over July.  Also, the sales of aluminum vessels actually rose a bit for the month of August, with pontoon boats leading the way........

Last weekend (Sept. 18,19, 2010) my wife and I attended the ACBS Annual Nationals in Petosky, MI. We had a great time exploring the lakes and rivers of Northern Michigan and got to ride in some really fantastic classic boats belonging to the Water Wonderland chapter of ACBS.


Here are a few pics from our trip, including what is locally called the "Million Dollar Sunset" over lake Michigan (I'm sure the Petosky Chamber of Commerce had a hand in that discription!)

Mississippi River Near Valmeyer, Illinois

   Mississippi River Limestone Caves Become Archives........

With very little fanfare, the federal government has been slipping records away into the limestone caves along the Mississippi River near Valmeyer, IL.  The low humidity levels and constant 58 degree temperatures make the caves ideal for storing records.  The facility was originally a quarry, and has been retrofitted into a storage facility.  Recently, federal stimulus funds allowed a 75,000 square foot expansion of the facility........

Missouri River Dredging

    Dredgers Would Like To Take Sediment From The Missouri River........

Dredgers are looking to remove almost 12 million tons of sediment per year from the Missouri River.  However, the Environmental Protection Agency has decided that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Draft Environmental Impact Statement does not provide sufficient scientific information to allow dredging permits to be granted.  In fact, the proposal may cause riverbed loss leading to damage to levees, bridges and the environment.

Dredging usually take place in areas of the river that are close locations where construction need is greatest.  These include cities along the Missouri River including St. Charles,  Jefferson City, Kansas City and St. Joseph.

Flood Insurance

    Flood Insurance Program For A Limited Time........

Even though the local Rivers are below flood stage, flood insurance is a good thing to have.  In fact, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has estimated that up to a third of all claims come from home owners that don't live in high risk areas.  During the summer, President Obama signed a bill that reauthorized the National Flood Insurance Program through September 30th. Under the program, policies take effect 30 days after the premium is paid, and remain in effect for a year........

    Flooding Upstream Heading This Way........

Flood warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service for portions of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa, thanks to heavy rains that caused waterways to burst their banks and inundate several towns.  The National Weather Service has warned that this can cause the major Rivers, Including the Mississippi River, to rise over the weekend.  Many people have been evacuated; luckily, no injuries or deaths have been reported........

Waterways Near Kansas City, Missouri

    Severe Hail Kills Wildlife Near Kansas City.........

Missouri conservation biologists announced that Fish and Canadian geese were killed by the severe hail over the past weekend.  Geese were killed after being struck by hail as large as 5 inches in diameter, while fish were killed by the sudden drop in water temperature caused by the icy hail.........

   Ingram Barge And MRCT Finish Emissions Reduction Program........

Recently, Ingram Barge Company and the Mississippi River Corridor - Tennessee unveiled the results of a program intended to reduce emissions on towboats that ply the Mississippi River.  Six Ingram towboats were retrofitted with diesel oxidation catalysts, in addition with closed crankcase emissions control systems.  The results of the program are hopeful, as significant reductions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulates were recorded........

Stone Ridge Dairy Under Scrutiny in Lone Tree Fish Kill

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is putting Stone Ridge Dairy under scrutiny for a fish kill that destroyed 40,000 fish and other aquatic life in early September along 9 miles of Lone Tree Creek and 1 mile of the Sangamon River with brown-stained water.

Stone Ridge is the largest dairy in the state of Illinois and was built in 2002 near Champaign in central Illinois.  The dairy has about 3,100 cows and covers 1,500 acres.

Recycled Fish 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon Results in Funds Raised, Cleaner Waters and Better Educated Anglers

Over 1,000 fish caught and released, $8500 raised for fisheries, and 10,000 pieces of trash removed from lakes and streams.



NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. - September 24, 2010 - Anglers from eight states and Canada completed their 24 hour fishing mission on September 10 & 11 in the Recycled Fish 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon presented by BoatUS Angler.

In addition to raising awareness for the problems facing our waters and raising money to help solve those problems through angler education, teams were competing for prizes. "Team Longboat" including Aaron Scott, of Arkansas; Brian Wise and Kyle Kosovich of Missouri; were the fundraising leaders, raising $1253. They won a "trip of a lifetime" expenses-paid trip to Spring Bay Resort on Lake Vermillion, Minnesota courtesy of BoatUS Angler.

The team who had the greatest success fishing was "Team KayakJak" including Marty, Christian and CJ Hughes of Nebraska. They fished Rock Creek Lake in Southwest Nebraska, and achieved a score of 19,799 points with about 200 fish caught and released. Points are awarded using the Angling Masters International fish calculator. Their team won a "trip of a lifetime" expenses-paid trip with a PAA (Professional Anglers Association) Tour-Level Professional Angler courtesy of BoatUS Angler.

"CJ is still jumping up and down," said CJ's father, Marty Hughes. "He has spent the last couple hours since finding out that he won "organizing" his tackle. He said it might take him a year to get ready for the trip with the PAA Pro."

The prize for the greatest amount of trash cleaned up went to "Team Fish Feeders" including Ben Leal and Brandon Cook of Iowa. They organized a lake cleanup with Central Iowa Anglers during their 24 hours on the water. Their volunteer crew removed two truckloads of trash from Big Creek Lake. Their team won a custom built fishing rod from Dragon's Custom Rods.

The largest fish of the tournament was caught by Rob Greer of Nebraska on "Team NEFGA 2" who caught a 31.5" Channel Cat from Summit Lake in Nebraska. Greer won a catfish print by wildlife artist Curt Redden.

Other prizes including tackle from Dick's Sporting Goods and Berkley were awarded for largest fish by species, photos taken, and runners-up in fishing and fundraising.

"The 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon created a grassroots network of anglers from across North America talking about the issues facing their home waters," said Teeg Stouffer, Recycled Fish Executive Director. "Anglers, our partners, and hundreds of donors showed how important clean, healthy water is to all of us through this event."

Funds raised will be used to support angler education initiatives through Recycled Fish such as the Sportsman's Stewardship Pledge program, Recycled Fish "On Ice" Tour, SAFE Angling and Drop in the Bucket youth education initiative. Some funds are also targeted for tangible pollution reduction projects like line recycling bins in Nebraska.

Sailboaters will be filling their sails and riding the water this weekend on the Gravois Arm of the Lake of the Ozarks.  The first portion of the race will take the sailors from Ressel Point to Coconuts for lunch and cocktails.  The second part of the race will be the return trip from Coconuts back to Ressel Point.  Weather forecasts for the start of the race are 7 mph winds from the east, southeast, and temps around 63F........

The Picture of this Day in 2008 ......was a  picture of a Harley Colored Houseboat moored in the upper harbor at Capt'n Jack's Marina.  The vessel is owned by Kent and Judy Houdek from Stillwater, MI.  They told me that they have been on the river for 1 1/2 years since they departed from Lock and Dam #1... and...... "there is"  a Harley on the front deck.  

    Kent told me "This is the coolest spot they have visited so far.
