I found another photo of the GOLDEN EAGLE FERRY while
still operating. Here is it posing for the camera April
15, 1955
Judging from its landed position, I would guess it is
the Illinois side of the river.
No doubt the passengers in those cars on the ferry have
their windows rolled up for the duration of the
crossing, in difference to that livestock truck

Mississippi River Near Inver Grove Heights,
Minnesota
Low Water Levels Blamed On Rock Island Swing
Bridge........
Residents of Inver
Grove Heights, Minnesota and a local marina
believe that the Rock Island Swing Bridge
Project is causing lower levels along the
Mississippi River, as well as silting. The
thought is that contractors restoring the Rock
Island Swing Bridge have restricted the River's
flow, causing the buildup of silt in the Marina
and a backwater channel. The city of Inver
Grove Heights states that there is no proof the
project is the cause of the silting issues and
this is just an excuse to get the city to pay
for dredging........

Car Pulled From The Mississippi River........
Thanks to the
falling Mississippi River levels, an early 90's
Ford Escort recently became visible near the

attached chains to the vehicle and were able to
remove the car from the River with a tow truck.
It seems that the car has been the water for

“Mud to Community Gardens” Program Helps Create
Community Garden in East St. Louis
State Agencies Help Community Residents Convert River Sediment into
Produce Garden Plot at East Side Health District
EAST ST. LOUIS, IL – Officials with the Illinois Department of Natural
Resources (IDNR), Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA),
Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and Illinois Department of
Agriculture today joined local officials and citizens in a ceremony to
break ground on the state‟s first “Mud to Community Gardens” project at
the East Side Health District in East St. Louis.
“The „Mud to Community Gardens‟ program is Governor Quinn's answer to
making state government responsive to local needs by coordinating a
multi-agency effort to turn soil sediment into the base for a
sustainable, healthy and readily-available community food source. Over
the next few weeks, hundreds of tons of topsoil that had eroded into our
waterways will be put to good use for a community garden in East St.
Louis,” said IDNR Director Marc Miller.
The “Mud to Community Gardens” program relocates clean river-dredged
silt for use in the development of community gardens where adequate soil
may not exist or is unavailable for use.
“Soils that historically have left Illinois and other Mississippi River
basin states through erosion will now be returned to beneficial use,”
said IEPA Director Doug Scott. “Through this project, we are preserving
this vital resource by growing healthy food locally.”
The project, located at 656 N. 20th St., is a collaborative effort among
state agencies that will provide topsoil for an approximately half-acre
plot at the East Side Health District on which local residents will be
able to grow produce. The IDNR is providing 400 cubic yards of dredged
soil from Pere Marquette State Park which IDOT trucks began transporting
last week. The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) is providing a
variety of seeds to help get the garden started. The IEPA collected and
analyzed soil
samples to ensure that the dredged sediment is safe to use in the
garden.
“Community gardens increase access to nutritious, locally-grown fruits
and vegetables while also teaching people how to cultivate their very
own specialty crops in their backyards,” added IDOA Director Tom
Jennings.
“We are proud to be a partner in the Community Gardens program and are
pleased to provide the means to bring rich soil to the local community,”
added IDOT Secretary Gary Hannig. “We hope residents will embrace this
initiative wholeheartedly and take advantage of the many benefits this
program offers.”
The East Side Health District community garden will serve as an
educational tool for local families and an inspiration for other
Illinois communities interested in starting their own gardens. In
conjunction with the community garden, the health district will
implement a new initiative called “Teach Value in Community Garden
Projects,” which will work in tandem with existing programs that promote
healthy eating habits.
“This project offers a hands-on approach that will assist in teaching
organic gardening practices and offer enormous benefits that promote
public health, wellness and a healthier quality of life,” said East Side
Health District Administrator Elizabeth Patton-Whiteside.
The “Mud to Community Gardens” program is an extension of the state‟s
successful “Mud to Parks” program, championed by Governor Pat Quinn.
“Mud to Parks” is helping relocate river sediment for productive reuse
at a number of state and local park sites throughout the Illinois River
basin.

Brunswick Stock Rating Holds........
After Brunswick
released their results for the third quarter of
2010, Tim Conder, a Wells Fargo Securities
analyst stated that he was keeping the rating of
Brunswick Corp. stock at "outperform". Conder
added that the stock seems to be appealingly
priced and it's return should exceed the market
over the next year. Brunswick reported that
boat sales were up 77% in the third quarter,
however, the company is still making adjustments
for falling fiberglass sales, and trying to meet

Alabama fun
Week three at Joe Wheeler and we’re having a good time. The town is a hilly bike
ride and 5 miles away (our 75 lb. bikes and weight of the kids make it a bit
unfavorable to make the run in for groceries). However, there’s plenty for us to
keep busy at the state park.

The kids made us a delicious cherry pie.

We made it known how much the kids loved dogs and while fellow boaters were away
on day trips, we were entrusted with their care. Our friends Joan and Jay have
three nice labs. Morgan loved Marley, Ryann with Rosie and Jaxon with Molly. The
girls were quick to clean up messes without a question (almost to prove that
they were responsible enough for their own dog).

Mississippi Riverfront At St. Louis
Happy 45th Birthday, Gateway Arch!
On October 28, 1965,
the Gateway Arch was completed with the
placement of a 10 ton keystone. It was
necessary to pry the Arch's legs apart with a
hydraulic jack in order to fit the keystone into
place. KansasCity.com put together a photo
montage showing the Gateway Arch and the St.
Louis Riverfront over the years........

Mississippi River Near Red Wing,
Minnesota
Lake Pepin Disappearing, Can It Be Saved?
As the
boating season is winding down, boaters on Lake Pepin are
wondering how much longer Lake Pepin will be around.
Apparently, the Mississippi River is depositing so much sediment
that the Lake is quite literally filling itself in. Norman
Senjem of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency stated that it
is expected that within the next 90 years, the upper third of
Lake Pepin will fill up with sediment and in 340 years, the Lake
would be completely full. Possible fixes include changes in
farming practices, wetlands restoration, the alteration of
drainage ditches and conformity in field and stream buffer
zones........

Fall Colors Predictions......
Missouri Department of Conservation foresters
update "Fall Color" reports weekly from mid-September through early-November.
According to the MDC website.....The 2010 fall color season in
the St. Louis area is rapidly coming to a close. We have had high
winds in the area for the past few days.
Some hickories and sugar maples still have good colors, but most of the
other trees, including oaks, are either lost their leaves or are still green
because of the warm weather we have hd. A hard freeze will probably cause
those trees to lose their greenery.

Chef
Parola Says Asian Carp.... Is Good....
During Tuesday's
festivities surrounding the dedication ceremony
at the Jerry F. Costello National Great Rivers
Research and Education Canter Confluence Field
Station, French chef Phillippe Parola was
preparing Asian carp for attendees to sample.
Parola prepares the bright white filets by
breading and frying, pan frying in butter or
poaching. The flavor of the breaded filets are
comparable to crab cakes, with no fishy flavor.
Parola stated that taxpayers could save a
considerable sum of money eating the carp, as
opposed to studying them........

Boat Manufacturer
Marine Products Releases 3Q Results........
Recently,
Marine Products Corp. announced that during the third quarter of
2010, net sales increased by over $17 million. Marine Products
Corp. builds Chaparral and Robalo Boats. Net sales for 3Q '10
were $24.03 million, compared to $7.01 million during 3Q '09.
The net sales increase was credited to a large increase in the
number of boats sold, a decrease in retail incentive costs, as
compared to '09. This was partially offset by a 4.9% decrease
in the average sale price per boat........

who hails out of Alton Marina in the boat............ The Busted Flush
Hi Bill,
I took this photo on Saturday afternoon at the Alton Marina. There are about
6 college aged people living aboard this pontoon boat traveling from MN to
New Orleans . They are singing and acting their way down the Mississippi .
They have been stuck at Alton Marina with engine trouble for the last couple
of weeks but are expected to move on this week.

P-2775: Italgrani USA
seeks authorization to install a 54-foot-wide by 300-foot-long dock
barge alongside their existing river mooring structure. A new conveyor
would be installed on the proposed dock barge to transport grain
products to 35-foot-wide by 200-foot-long hopper barges that are
periodically delivered to the site for loading. The purpose of adding
the new dock barge is to allow year-round usage of the facility during
low river stages. The activity site is located at Italgrani USA’s
existing river terminal operation at 7900 Van Buren Street, in St.
Louis, Missouri, along the right descending bank of the Mississippi
River at approximate river mile 172.5. The public notice comment period
opens October 28, 2010 and closes November 18, 2010.

Mississippi River Near Hannibal, Missouri
Flood Insurance Rates To Fall In Hannibal........
Recently,
Hannibal, Missouri was granted membership in the National
Flood Insurance Program's Community Rating System. This
should mean that Hannibal residents that carry flood
insurance will see lower rates. This classification was
based on the efforts of the city to control what is
constructed in the flood plain, in addition to monitoring
federal regulations concerning major improvements below base
flood elevation. The rate reductions could begin around May
of 2011........

Making Headway - Weekly Column
By Captain Larry Walker
Every time you turn around there is another "Aid to Navigation" (ATON) on
the water to help you find your way. We're all familiar with dayboards and
buoys. They are the most common ATONs and we find them everywhere. Let's
talk about a few that aren't so common.
You can receive signals from transmitters known as Radar Beacons. These aids
to navigation transmit signals on the marine radar band. The signals from
such transmitters produce a distinctive image on your radar screen. Thus,
not only does your radar exhibit the presence of a "target," it actually
identifies specific targets.
Radar Beacons are mounted in fixed locations and are triggered by the
presence of a radar signal from any nearby vessel. Once the Radar Beacon
senses that a vessel with radar capability is in the vicinity, its radar
transponder begins transmitting. The signal is unique to that specific aid
to navigation.
There are two kinds of Radar Beacons. The first type, called "RACONS," will
provide both range and bearing information. When a vessel receives a RACON
signal, it is usually displayed on your radar screen in Morse code. A series
of dots and dashes is used to represent a specific point on your navigation
chart.
The second type of Radar beacon is called a "RAMARK." These aids to
navigation provide only "bearing" information. They will appear on your
radar screen as a dashed line between the center of the screen and the
location of the transponder that is transmitting the signal. In this case,
you can determine the direction in which the RAMARK lies on your chart, but
not it's distance from your vessel.
In either case, the RACON or the RAMARK can be extremely helpful in fog or
other restricted visibility. You will usually find them in busy waterways
where there is a lot of commercial shipping traffic. You can find them on
your navigation chart by looking for RACON or RAMARK in the description of
an aid to navigation.
We are all familiar with the role of the lighthouse in helping mariners find
their way. A lighthouse can exhibit a light in any part of its 360-degree
arc of visibility. Some lighthouses are partially obscured (no light showing
for part of the 360-degrees possible) when showing a light in all directions
is not prudent. Another option regarding a lighthouse is what we call
"colored" sectors.
A colored sector of a lighthouse shows a color (other than white) in part of
its 360-degree area. In cases of danger, red is a common color. Where rocks,
shoals, or some other hazard to mariners is present, the light from a
lighthouse may show red in that area and white elsewhere. The "red sector,"
as it is called, is shown on your chart. Once you examine the chart, you can
see the hazard that the red sector is warning you about.
Colored sectors may be used to indicate things other than danger.
Examination of your navigation chart will reveal what a colored sector is
there for. The color of the sector, along with the bearing lines at its
limits, will be illustrated on your chart adjacent to the lighthouse.
Your navigation chart is a valuable tool. The closer you look, the more it
will tell you!
Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!
Captain Larry Walker is the president of World Wide Marine
Training, Inc., a U.S. Coast Guard Approved facility authorized to give
examinations for captain's licenses up to 200 Ton Master, Able Seaman up to
Unlimited, STCW-95, Radar, ARPA and other Endorsements (www.fromthehelm.com)

River
Conservation Programs Expand In Illinois........
Efforts by federal
and state authorities to conserve land and
reduce erosion will now include two major
Illinois river basins. The Illinois and
Kaskaskia River basins were recently added to

in the development of conservation practices on
erodible lands in the river basins. Program
incentives include payments as well as technical
assistance with environmentally sensitive

Party

The
Picture of this Day in
2009......... were
sent in by Capt'n Mark Cutler who hails out of Lake
Center marina in the cruiser....Cutty's Ark.
Hi Bill,
Just wanted to send you a few pics of last saturday at
Cedar Hill Resort. There were some costumes, pumpkin
decorating, and good times. In the pictures you can see
the youngest pumpkin decorator, Hayden Bicknese. He had
to use a sharpie, not a knife! Also you can see that
pumpkins weren't the only thing to get decorated. There
was a good mix of small and large boats and the harbor
there at Cedar Hill was almost full.
Just another beautiful day on the river!

Metro
East Levee Update
FEMA To
Be Sued Over Levees........
The leaders of the
Illinois counties of Madison, Monroe and St.
Clair are getting ready to file suit against
FEMA, citing that they failed to show proof that
the Metro East Levees are close to failure.
FEMA decided the levees are in need of repair,
and were getting ready to decertify them. This
will cause flood insurance rates to skyrocket.
Chairman of the Madison County Board, Alan
Dunstan, stated that a bi-partisan effort is
underway to bring the levees up to
standard........

St.
Charles County Flood Maps
Meeting Thursday To Discuss Revised Maps........
Thursday
evening, a meeting will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm to allow
the public to review revised federal flood risk maps. These
maps are used to determine where construction restrictions
and flood insurance coverage is required. Officials from
St. Charles city and county had objected to the preliminary
maps last year. Those maps would have affected more than
300 area property owners........

Boschert
Creek Near Charlestowne
Portions Of Charlestowne May Be In The
Floodplain........
Newly proposed FEMA
flood insurance rate maps are likely including
many Charlestowne lots and homes in Boschert
Creek's 100 year flood plain. The earliest
these maps could be enacted is December 2011.
At this point, the maps are preliminary, and
flood designations could in fact change. The
changes to the maps arise from the
decertification of the Boschert Creek levee, as
the levee is not properly constructed, nor has
it been maintained as a levee. In fact, there
are no records of the levee being certified in
the first place........

Illinois
Department of Natural Resources Press Release.....

For Immediate Release
October 25, 2010

FSA/IDNR Announce Expansion of Illinois Conservation
Reserve Enhancement Program
CREP will now include Illinois
and Kaskaskia River basins
SPRINGFIELD, IL – Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)
Director Marc Miller today joined United States Department of
Agriculture Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Director Scherrie
Giamanco to announce an expansion of the successful Illinois
Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) to include both the
Illinois River and Kaskaskia River basins in Illinois. CREP is a
voluntary, incentive-based federal, state, and local conservation
program that works with private landowners to establish conservation
practices on erodible lands that help reduce runoff and sedimentation of
waterways and enhance fish and wildlife habitat.
“Since 1998, the USDA, through the Illinois Farm Service Agency, has
partnered with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the
Illinois Department of Agriculture and many other federal, state, local
and non-governmental agencies and groups to promote water quality and
wildlife habitat enhancements in the Illinois River Watershed,” said
Giamanco.
“Most importantly, we have achieved great success in the Illinois CREP
by working at the county level one on one with agricultural producers in
this voluntary program. Through their efforts, the public as a whole has
seen great benefits,” Giamanco continued. “I am ecstatic to be the SED
at a time where we can expand this program to agricultural producers in
the Kaskaskia River Watershed. I look forward to continued success for
the Illinois CREP by working in the combined watersheds.”

Asian
Carp Update
Carp Is
The New Cash Crop........
After several years
of work, it would seem that the efforts to
develop a market for Asian carp are beginning to
pay off. Big River Fish Corporation of Pearl,
Illinois recently was given a federal grant of
$2 million after securing a contract to send 30
million pounds of Asian carp to China. The carp
will be sold in China as a high end product,
marketed as wild Mississippi River Fish, with so
much energy, that it dances on the water.......

Riverlands Migratory Bird
Sanctuary
Pelicans Are Dropping In On The Riverbend........
Cooler
temperatures mean that it is time for the American white
pelican to head south along the Mississippi Flyway, and some
are stopping in at West Alton's Riverland Migratory Bird
Sanctuary. The pelicans spend the winter along the Gulf
coast, Mexico and California. The American white pelican is
one of the larger North American birds and it is the only
white pelican. Some of the best places to check out these
birds are at the Sanctuary and along the Meeting of the
Great Rivers National Scenic Byway between Alton and Pere

Upper
Missouri River
Reservoir Drawdown
Should Finish In December........
The U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers recently announced that they expect
the drawdown of the reservoirs along the Upper
Missouri River will be completed by early
December. The drawdown is necessary to make
room for next years runoff, as the reservoirs
are holding more water this year thanks to
increased runoff. Below Yankton, South Dakota,
the Missouri River levels are expected to be 3-4
feet higher than normal through November........

Missouri Department of Natural Resources
Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds
Initiative
Missouri is saving some ‘solid ground’ – and helping restore the health of
surface waters all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
In the summer of 2010, the department’s Soil and Water Conservation Program
coordinated development of Missouri project proposals for the Mississippi River
Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative, or MRBI. The proposals from Missouri soil
and water conservation districts resulted in 12 Missouri projects being awarded
$6 million in 2010 and $28.3 million in funding over the next four years.
The MRBI is a 12-state effort funded by the USDA to address nutrient loading in
the Mississippi River Basin from its source in Minnesota to its mouth in the
Gulf of Mexico. Agricultural runoff containing fertilizer and other nutrients
produces nuisance algal blooms in surface water that impair recreational uses,
cause fish kills, and require extra treatment of local drinking water supplies.
Ultimately, the runoff also contributes to a lack of oxygen downstream in the
so-called "dead zone" near where the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of
Mexico. This area is the second-largest dead zone in the world.
The federal funds from USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will be
used along with state, local, and private funds to provide cost-share payments
to help agricultural producers install conservation practices that reduce
nutrient and sediment runoff from agricultural land.
The Soil and Water Conservation Program helped the districts develop their MRBI
project proposals and provided $500,000 in state nonfederal match to leverage
the federal MRBI funds. For each district interested in applying, SWCP developed
a project proposal template populated with information such as water quality
data, impaired waters, TMDLs, historical cost-share payments made to producers
in each county, existing watershed groups, and watershed management plans. The
state’s funding will primarily help pay for a portion of the cost of
edge-of-field and in-stream monitoring to measure the effectiveness of each
project to reduce nutrient and sediment runoff.

Mississippi
River Near Cairo, Illinois
Bridge
Struck By Tow, Closed........
Saturday evening, a tow boat struck the Highway
60/62 bridge spanning the Mississippi River. This
caused the closure of of the bridge to traffic into
Sunday morning. The collision occurred around 11 pm
Saturday. The Illinois Department of Transportation
surveyed the damages to the span, and declared it
safe for traffic. The bridge re-opened at 2:30 am.
The closure of the bridge and the River is a normal
precaution, allowing structural engineers to look
for any damage........

The Pictures of the Day .... were sent to us by Jeri & George
Levesque of the boat........S/V Ex Libris
Hi River Bill,
Sunday, 10/10/10 was the perfect balmy, breezy day to spend sailing about
Don & Mary Ellen Morrison's 37' Endeavor, Ragtime. There were a number of
other happy sailors on the Alton Pool - long past when most boats have
tucked in for the season. John & Lynda Heald (s/v Suete Dern) were part of
Sunday's crew.
Attached is a photo of Little Cap, Skipper Key aboard Ragtime being alert
for sudden foliage changes on the bluffs. The blue boat is Harry & Gwen
Ragland's Tapacolo, you can see their toddler "Rosie" peaking over the
companion way (she's on Mommy's lap).
If we could slip in a "sailboat" for a "raft", I think Huck Finn best
captures our affinity for all things boats and the Mississippi River, "We
said there warn't no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so
cramped up and smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty free and easy and
comfortable on a raft."
A Columbus Day Greeting to all sailors.

Missouri
Department of Conservation All Outdoor News.................
Shortnose gar might earn St. Joseph angler a world record
St. Joseph—Patience with a fish most anglers ignore put George
Pittman Sr. on track to be considered a world record holder by the
International Game Fish Association.
As is, the 8-pound, 3-ounce shortnose gar that Pittman caught on Oct. 12 at
Lake Contrary in St. Joseph is already confirmed by the Missouri Department
of Conservation as a state record rod-and-reel catch. The 36.2-inch fish
tops the previous state record shortnose gar, a 4-pound, 11-ounce fish
caught from Lower Big Lake in 1995.
Pittman, 52, spent many summer nights trying to catch catfish from the oxbow
lake, an old channel of the nearby Missouri River. He caught only a few
catfish but he regularly landed and released gar, most “about 20- to
24-inches long and as big around as an egg. I’ve caught about 250 gar this
year.
One
shortnose that he landed was bigger than usual so he weighed it, and it was
6-pounds, 3-ounces, big enough to be a state record. But he didn’t know
about the record and he gave that shortnose to a friend who likes to eat
gar.
Later a tackle shop employee told Pittman that he might have given away a
record fish. So when he caught another big gar, he waited until daybreak and
then called the Missouri Conservation Department.
“When I got to the lake I knew it had beaten the old state record fish,”
said fisheries biologist Eric Dennis.
Dennis weighed the fish on a certified scale. The catch is under review by
the International Game Fish Association in Dania Beach, Fla., as a pending
world record. It tops the current record 7-pound, 1-ounce shortnose gar that
was caught in Texas.
Pittman thought he had a big catfish when he first hooked the gar about 2
a.m. He watched a long time as something kept moving his line slightly, as
if a fish was nibbling on his bait.
“Finally, I set the hook and the fight was on,” he said. “I thought it was a
catfish because it fought just like a catfish. Usually gar come in fairly
easy.”
Pittman was using 20-pound test line. The gar’s teeth weakened the line and
it broke shortly after he netted the fish. He used a dead, seven-inch
bighead carp for bait.
It is illegal in Missouri to use live bighead or silver carp as bait, as
they are a harmful invasive species that can spread to other waters via bait
buckets. But they are legal to use as bait if they are dead.
Pittman lives near the lake and he is disabled, so he has time to fish
often. He would like to catch another record gar.
The Missouri all-methods record for shortnose gar is a 13-pounder taken by
an archer bowfishing at Mark Twain Lake in 2006.
“I’m hoping to get one that big with rod and reel,” Pittman said. “I don’t
mind catching gar, especially when I’ve got friends who like to eat them.”
-Bill Graham-

The
Picture of this Day in
2009.........
was from Capt'n Dave Zaloz, who hails out of Bluff View
Marina, Clearwater Lake
Hey River Bill:
Saw your website and wanted to post a cool pic we took
this past month. We are in the process of building a new
marina store and have had it anchored along the
shoreline for initial construction. The store was
recently moved to its permanent location in order to
beat the fall winds and rain. This picture shows the
store being moved in the early morning as the sun was
rising and burning off the morning fog from the lake.
We like to call it the phoenix rising from the ashes due
to all the damage that was sustained on Clearwater Lake
from the 2008 floods, 5”’ ice storm in Jan 2009, and the
inland hurricane during May 2009.
Here’s to a prosperous and fruitful future.

News Release From BoatUS
BoatUS
Reports Top Three Items Stolen from Boats Over the Winter
And How to Prevent an Unwanted "Visit" or Boat Theft
ALEXANDRIA, Va. October 21,
2010 - Boats stored over the winter can be easy targets for
thieves. Many boat owners don't find out they have been a victim
of theft until long after, often when spring preparations are
being made. To help boaters, anglers and sailors deal with this
consistent problem, the folks at BoatUS Marine Insurance have
these tips for storing your boat this winter.
The top three most common items stolen from boats over the
winter are:
-
Electronics: To avoid a
theft, it is worth your time and energy to remove
electronics and store them at home. If they are permanently
installed, record ownership information including model and
serial numbers. Photos may also assist with a potential
recovery or insurance claim.
-
Outboards: Small
outboards should always be removed and stored in a secure
location, such as your locked garage or basement. Larger
outboards should have a lock installed.
-
Outdrives: Again, the
best way to avoid this type of theft is to remove the unit
and store in a safe location and ensure the serial number is
recorded. If it will not be removed, install an outdrive
lock.
The name of the game in
preventing theft is deterrence - anything to make your boat or
equipment less attractive to thieves is the goal. Here are some
general tips:
-
If you are storing your
boat away from home, ensure the yard or marina is secure
with fencing and cameras.
-
If you are storing your
trailerable boat at home, if possible don't leave the
trailer tongue facing the street. Block the trailer and
remove the tires, storing them inside, or add wheel locks.
Put a lock on the hitch receiver.
-
Adding personalized
markings to equipment can help identify and recover stolen
items. By making them obvious, it also makes the items less
"marketable."
-
Don't leave your dinghy on your club's or marina's rack
unlocked or for long periods of time.
-
Make periodic visits to
your boat over the winter. If you can't get to it, get a
friend or yard worker to make a monthly visit.
-
Don't leave liquor out
in the open where it can be seen.
-
Leaving a "for sale"
sign posted all winter attracts the wrong kind of attention
and gives someone an excuse to get aboard and look around.
-
BoatUS members can
benefit from the BoatUS Theft Protection Program.
-
What's the most common
type of boat stolen each year? Personal watercraft.
-
Don't forget that
four-legged "bandits," such as raccoons and other critters,
will enjoy your boat as much as spring breakers hitting the
beach, so ensure winter covers are tight and remain securely
attached. Don't store your boat in a place that makes it
easier for animals to get aboard, such as near trees or
building overhangs. Cover large exhaust ports. Don't leave a
ladder affixed to the boat.
For more information on
preventing a boat theft, review the BoatUS blog: "Love Your
Boat? So Does Someone Else!" . For more information on boat
insurance, call the BoatUS Marine Insurance Department at

Canal
Study Shows Anti-Carp Dam The Way To Go........
A $100,000,
eight month study funded by the Natural Resources Defense
Council claims that the carp problem could be solved in a fairly
uncomplicated way. Dam the canal, and pump the water over the
dam into the Mississippi River basin. This solution will stop
the carp and will stop barge traffic as well. The proposal has
met with opposition from the barge industry, as it does not
offer solutions for the accommodation of the barges........

Roadtrip in AL, TN and MS
It’s been another fun week in Alabama. The people down here are so nice,
beautiful weather, great scenery and we couldn’t ask for anything more. We
rented a car for a few days and ended up driving over 1,200 miles. We took in
many sites each day and tried the local cuisine including alligator, catfish and
BBQ. The kids tried it all and Jaxon ate more alligator than anyone (he didn’t
understand the mental part of what it really was - ha ha).
Morgan and Ryann went tubing together and when Morgan fell off Ryann was
laughing so hard I thought she might fall off.

FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE:
St. Charles, MO
Water Patrol and Pujols Family Foundation combine fun and
water safety for children
On Sept. 25, the Missouri State Water Patrol and the Pujols Family
Foundation teamed up for a fun-filled outing on the Mississippi River
that also had an important water safety message. Almost 50 children took
part in the event at the Lake Center Marina in St. Charles.
The children were also able to explore fire trucks from the Orchard Farm and
Rivers Pointe Fire Protection districts. Water Patrol officers offered
interactive activities about water safety. After talking with the children
about the importance of life jackets, officers took participants for rides
in Water Patrol boats on the Mississippi River.
"It's great to have the opportunity to interact with these kids in such a
positive way," said Lt. Col. Mike Smith, acting commissioner of the Water
Patrol. "The looks on their faces and the way they responded to the
officers left no doubt that this will be a memorable experience and that
they won't forget the important safety messages our officers shared with
them. I also know that all our officers enjoyed this special day."
Albert and Deidre Pujols established the Pujols Family Foundation as a means
of sharing their commitment to faith, family and others. The foundation's
mission is to: promote awareness, provide hope and meet tangible needs for
families and children with Down syndrome; provide extraordinary experiences
for children with disabilities and life threatening illnesses; and to
improve the standard of living and quality of life for impoverished children
and orphans in the Dominican Republic. The Water Patrol and Pujols Family
Foundation held their first fun day on the water last year at Hide Away
Harbor Park.

StreetBeat Band.......
We’ve got some new tunes again!
This Saturday October 23rd from 8-12 we are playing
again at The Spirits Lounge in Alton. Always our favorite. No cover and a
fun time. Stop by and say hi if you can make it. Bring your dancin’ shoes.
Just a heads up for you about next week Saturday October 30th. We will be
playing our first gig at the Alton Sports Tap. This is a costume party and
should be a great time for all attending. I will let you know the
particulars next week such as if there is a contest, door prize or cover
charge.
And just to see if you are still paying attention,
I will buy a beer for anyone who
stands on their head in front of the band. Turns out one did last
week so I’ve lost my perfect record.

Lake Of The Ozarks
Shootout Brought In $70,000 For Charities........
This summer's
2010 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout and peripheral events brought
in $71 less than $70,000 for local charities. A volunteer
coughed up the $71 to make it an even $70,000. Many charities
benefitted from the shootout, including the Lake Ozark Shriner's
Club, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 30-05, Share the
Harvest and several area fire protection districts. The
Shootout also helped the Lake area businesses boost their
