The Picture of the Day ....  was sent to us by Lisa Hickey

Hi Bill

We took a ride out to the river Sunday.
Things are getting pretty icy.
It has a whole different look and feel in the winter.
Just a couple more months and it will be back to normal.

YesterYear's River Picture of the Day in 2010 ----   was from Capt'n Jeff Osborne, who hails out of Piasa Harbor......

Bill,

This is a picture of our last day on the boat this year. It’s the view out of Paisa Harbor looking out into ski chute. It was in the morning as the sun was coming up over the Missouri Side. As you can see, the ice had tried to creep up on us in the night. Good thing I got up and chased it away!

Metro East Levee Update

    Date Set For Levee Trial........

This spring, the case of three southwestern Illinois counties that are suing the federal government over the metro east levees will be heard in a federal courtroom.  At issue is the changes that the Federal Emergency Management Agency made to the flood maps in the Metro East.  FEMA had deemed the 50-plus year old levees deficient to the point of not meeting the minimum certification level.  The trial date has been set for April 16th........

Eagle Watching

    Good Spots To Spot Eagles........

While the lock and dam and ferries around St. Louis tend to shock fish in the Mississippi River, offering an easy meal for the bald eagles that winter in the area, eagles come to the area every year for the warmer climate as well.  Conservation efforts have led to an increase in the eagle population to 20,000 birds in the lower 48 states.  Organized eagle watching opportunities will be held at Valley Park's World Bird Sanctuary, the National Great Rivers Museum, Pere Marquette State Park, and at the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower........

YesterYear's River Picture of the Day in 2009 ----   were from Capt'n Ernie Moretti, who hails out of Eagles Landing Marina.

Hi Bill:

Sue and me and our two sons just got back from visiting my brother Sal in
California. It was my first trip ever to the California Coast. We had a
great time even though it was about 10 degrees cooler than normal! We went
out on his sailboat on December 27 and 28. He keeps the boat at Channel
Islands Harbor, north of Los Angeles, near Ventura, California. The marinas
out there are very nice and have lots of restaurants and bars. You know,
the very staple of marine life!

Anyway, I thought I would share these pics with you! We can't wait for our
river season to start! Sailing was fun, but it doesn't beat cruising on our
River and hitting our recreational areas!

See you on the River (if not before)!

Thanks...

Ernie Moretti

Bill,

Hope your New Year is going well. I wondered down to the river today, trying to get a good look at some eagles, but instead got a couple of other nice shots. This is a combination of them, the nest and twigs are one and the sun and gull are the other. I thought they looked good together.

Proposed E15 Label Garners NMMA Comments........

Monday, the National Marine Manufacturers Association offered comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency about the proposed labels that are intended to keep consumers from mistakenly refueling with E15.  The E15 had been approved for use in 2007 model year and newer cars and trucks, but not older vehicles or marine engines.  The NMMA states that the labels do not provide adequate warning to consumers about the hazards inherent to potential misfueling........

Tickets Available – Masters of the Sky Eagle Shows

Alton, Il. –The Meeting of the Rivers Foundation announces the return of the “Masters of the Sky” bird shows, presented by the World Bird Sanctuary at the National Great Rivers Museum. Masters of the Sky shows will be held at 11:00, 1:00, and 3:00 on February 19, 20 and 21, 2011. Tickets are on sale at the National Great Rivers Museum for $5 per adult and $3 per child. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mtrf.org, in person at the National Great Rivers Museum, or over the phone with a credit card by calling 618.462.6979.

Seating for the “Masters of the Sky” program is limited to the first 200 ticket holders for each show. Due to the high demand for this program, shows will be conducted in an outside heated tent to accommodate a larger audience. Other activities include hands-on craft workshops, photos with “Eric the Eagle”, and a 14 minute film titled “Where Eagles Soar.” You will also be able to go on a tour of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam, use spotting scopes to locate eagles, and get a bite to eat at the Eagle Café.

Bald eagles use the Riverlands and Melvin Price Locks and Dam area as a migration thoroughfare this time of year. The educational shows proudly complement the winter migration by bringing live bald eagles, owls, falcons, vultures and hawks to the National Great Rivers Museum where everyone can get an up-close view. These rehabilitated birds serve as ambassadors for their species. Naturalists focus their presentations on teaching the importance of raptors in the food chain, challenges they face as they travel from their northern nesting grounds to find a food source along the Mississippi River, and interesting traits of the species. One of the highlights of the show is experiencing flyovers from specially trained birds that skim just above the audience.

Bring your binoculars and cameras, and dress for the winter weather – temperatures and wind chills are lower near the water. The key to successful eagle viewing is patience. Please respect private property and
restricted areas! Eagle watching guides can be picked up from the staff at the National Great Rivers Museum. Eagles can often be seen perched in trees along the Mississippi River and standing on the ice, a lot of times
with other migrating waterfowl. The annual concentration of bald eagles in the Alton area is a sign of the species’ remarkable recovery and inexhaustible need for food, which can be found in the open waters below
the Melvin Price Locks and Dam.

This program is made possible by the Meeting of the Rivers Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the education and preservation of rivers. The National Great Rivers Museum is located off River Heritage Parkway (IL Hwy 143) at #2 Lock & Dam Way, East Alton, IL 62024, adjacent to Melvin Price Locks & Dam. It is open daily from 9:00 to 5:00, with no charge for admission or the locks and dam tours. For more information, or to purchase tickets to a Masters of the Sky show, call 618.462.6979 or toll free 877.462.6979.

Rambling River to visit National Great Rivers Museum

Alton, Il. – The National Great Rivers Museum is pleased to host a travelling exhibit, the Rambling River Project fiber art display. The exhibition’s grand opening will be from 12:00 – 4:00 pm on Sunday, January 2, 2011, providing visitors a chance to meet the artists who handcrafted this beautiful collection of artistic quilts.

Fitting in with the National Great Rivers Museum’s message to “Discover your connection to the river!” this display is a series of 15 landscape scenes with a common river running through them. Each panel was designed and quilted by a different artist from throughout Missouri.

The Rambling River Fiber Artists, as they are known, each received limited instructions and worked individually to create their own unique images. The piece made its public debut at the Lee’s Summit Quilters Quilt Show in November. It amazed audiences with the how the river flows uninterrupted from scene to scene throughout the 22 foot compilation.

The display will remain open during the museum’s daily operating hours through Saturday, February 26, 2011.

For more information please call 618.462.6979 or toll free 877.462.6979.

Quilts Inspired By Rivers On Display........

The National Great Rivers Museum is exhibiting fifteen, 18 by 22 inch quilted panels that were inspired by the River.  The display, Rambling River Project, opened Sunday, and will run through Saturday, February 26th.  The rules for the quilters required the use of the same blue material to represent the River, and the River had to enter and exit each panel using specific widths.  The result is a continuous Rambling River, meandering through different scenes........

Record Turn Out For 2011 Polar Plunge........

Even though the waters of the Illinois River were freezing on New Year's Day, that did not seem to deter around 460 people from taking part in the ninth annual Polar Plunge to benefit the Dream Factory and the South Side Mission's Camp Kearney.  Apparently, that is the highest attendance the event has had thus far.  While some participants wore silly costumes, others chose to wear as little as possible, stating that they would not be as cold........

Battle Over Land Use Along The Mississippi River........

Property owners, businesses, local governments and conservationists have been squabbling over land use regulations in the 72 mile stretch of the Mississippi River in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.  At issue is that some believe the current laws governing the land adjacent to the River is not strict enough, and some believe that there is no need for changes.  The St. Paul-based group, Friends of the Mississippi River is arguing for common-sense laws that balances economic development with the health and scenic values of the River........

Happy New Year!

Grandma Debbie and Grandpa Rich (Craig's mom and stepfather) came for a visit this week. It was great to see them. They took the kids bowling one afternoon, out to dinner and for a sleepover at their hotel. They had a blast and went in the hot tub after breakfast that next morning. (Craig came down with a cold so our plans changed a little).

Marine Theft Prevention

While the boat is tucked away for the winter, it is a perfect opportunity to review ways to make your beloved vessel less likely to be victimized by thieves.  Topping the list is removing all valuable items from the boat.  Make sure to photograph or even videotape your equipment in place aboard the boat.  Making your mark on the equipment is a good idea, as is making up a complete inventory of all of the gear aboard the boat........

The man than thought he heard something and alerted authorities.  When it was determined that the man had viewed a buoy in the water, he quickly left the Riverfront.  It is fortunate that all that was in the water was a buoy, as responders would have had problems launching a rescue vessel on account of ice........

The Mississippi River Is Sweeter After Corn Syrup Spill........

Friday, around 6,000 gallons of corn syrup spilled into the Mississippi River near Keokuk, Iowa.  Apparently, maintenance was being performed at the Roquette America corn processing plant on Thursday, and a worker forgot to close a drain valve after cleaning a tank.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources stated that the syrup is toxic to fish, but the dilution factor of the Mississippi River means the incident is not likely to cause a major impact to the environment........

Thursday, Lori Swanson, Minnesota's Attorney General, filed suit against the 3M Co. demanding payment for cleanup costs for pollution caused by chemicals leaching into the Mississippi River.  Bill Nelson, a spokesman for 3M, stated that the chemicals in question are perflurochemicals, and they are not hazardous materials, as defined by state and federal law.  Back in 2007, an agreement between 3M and Minnesota was forged to resolve issues that arose because of high PFC concentrations in the drinking water........
