Missouri River Flood Outlook
Flood Risk Looking Low For 2021........
As we head into the New Year, the risk of flooding along the
Missouri River System looks to be lower then normal, as the
ground remains dry across much of the region and the snowpack
levels are for the most part below average.
On Thursday, officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and
the National Weather Service warned that it is still early in
the year and conditions could change.
So far, it seems that 2021 will be somewhat drier and only
approximately 90 percent of the normal amount of water is
expected to flow along the Missouri River Basin........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri
Bi-State Development Focusing On
Infrastructure Improvements........
Mary Lamie, the executive vice president of multi modal
enterprises for Bi-State Development recently stated that this
year, the freightway organization will be focused on
infrastructure improvements.
According to the St. Louis Regional Freightway, the
reconstruction of the Merchant's Bridge in Madison County,
Illinois is the highest infrastructure priority for 2021.
The Merchant's Bridge is one of two rail bridges spanning the
Mississippi River in the St. Louis Region. It is the sixth
busiest rail bridge over the Mississippi River.
Other high-priority projects in the St. Louis region in the
I-270 North corridor, including the replacement of the I-270
Chain of Rocks Bridge. The span was opened in 1966 and is
nearing the end of it's planned life. Traffic on the span
has increased dramatically, going from around 19,000 vehicles
per day in 1975 to about 51,000 vehicles per day today.
Approximately 20 percent of that traffic is heavy trucks........

Duck Boat News
New Duck Boat Tours May Be Coming To
Table Rock Lake........
The owners of Branson Duck Tours, LLC. recently announced their
intention to bring duck boat tours back to Table Rock Lake near
Branson, Missouri late this spring. So far, Branson
officials have not received a business license application from
the new company.
The duck boat tours were a popular attraction in Branson until
17 people drowned when a duck boat sank during a storm back in
2018.
The new venture will not be using the same World War II era
surplus amphibious vehicles as the previous attraction had.
The new boat tours would use Hydra-Terra amphibious vessels that
feature foam-filled compartments for buoyancy. Reportedly,
the new vessels are "unsinkable"........

Fishing News From Carlyle Lake
Catfish Population Looking Good At
Carlyle Lake........
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources' fisheries
biologists are predicting that catfish anglers headed to Carlyle
Lake could have one of their best years yet.
The fisheries biologists say that the channel catfish population
remains good, and that the catfish catches during the fall
sampling were good and should provide good fishing.
Predicting that this year will be better than last year is a
bold statement, as last year catfish anglers enjoyed phenomenal
success. The fall sampling showed plenty of catfish in the
four-to-eight pound range, with some even reaching 10
pounds........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Cape Girardeau Officials:
Floodwall In Great Shape........
Looking back five years at the New Year Flood of 2016, Cape
Girardeau, Missouri saw the highest flood waters that even
surpassed the Great Flood of 1993.
Cape Girardeau Public Works crews were manning the pump stations
and keeping the flood protection system maintained. Casey
Brunke, Assistant Public Works Director says that other than
some work at one of the pump stations, not much has changed.
Brunke said that the flood wall was built several decades ago,
but it is safe. She adds that if they were to rebuild the
flood wall today, they would not be making many changes to the
design........

Louis Claims Up To 70 Lives........
On the evening of January 3, 1844, the steamboat
Shepherdess hit a snag,
which is a dead tree lurking underwater, three miles south of
the St. Louis landing near Cahokia Bend.
Within about two minutes, water reached the main deck as the
crippled vessel drifted along the icy Mississippi RIver.
The Shepherdess sank to it's top deck near Carondelet.
Up to 70 people died that night. The exact death toll is
unknown, as passenger lists weren't exactly accurate at that
time. A nearby steamboat rescued many of the
survivors........

Waterfowl........
The Illinois River is part of the aerial superhighway for
migrating birds known as the Mississippi Flyway. The

Illinois, is an excellent place to see the annual migration.
According to Jason Beverlin, the deputy director of river

waterfowl passing through the region.
Recently, there have been large flocks of snow geese, American

Mississippi River At West Alton, Missouri
Annual Eagle Festival Held Virtually At
Riverlands........
On Saturday, January 2, 2021, the annual Eagle Festival began at
the Audubon Center at Riverlands in West Alton, Missouri.
The Eagle Festival is a celebration of the winter migration of
the American Bald Eagle.
Experts anticipate that every year, some 1,000 American bald
eagles will migrate to the area along the meeting of the Great
Rivers National Scenic Byway located just outside of St. Louis
in Illinois.
This year, the COVID-19 pandemic changed how the Eagle Festival
was held. The event was held virtually and participants
were able to livestream the event and learn about bald eagles
with Jennifer Jones, a volunteer with the World Bird Sanctuary
and Liberty, a 30 year old American Bald Eagle........

Ohio River At Paducah, Kentucky
Dredging Permit Denied....
Paducah To Reapply....
The City of Paducah, Kentucky is expecting to put up thousands
of dollars to reapply for a permit for strategic dredging of a
sediment deposit that affects a business' off-loading of liquid
asphalt and threatening the transient boat dock.
The dredging project will not remove the whole mud and grass
island at Ohio River Mile Marker 935.2, near the confluence of
the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers, and immediately downstream of the
city's boat dock, as that would be too costly.
City Engineer Rick Murphy says that crews would remove the
section of the deposit that was interfering and possibly extend
the pier of the affected business, Midwest Terminal........

Missouri River Management
More Landowners Join Suit Against The
Corps........
Last Wednesday, the law firm that had successfully sued the
federal government over flooding caused by endangered species
projects filed a second lawsuit which will allow more landowners
to claim damages.
Around 400 landowners were part of the original lawsuit, the
mass action Ideker case that has been going on for approximately
eight years. Dan Boulware, an attorney for the Polsinelli
law firm says that the new case is a class action suit intended
to allow those that didn't join the first suit to get
compensated.
Boulware says that the number of landowners potentially eligible
under a class action is unknown. In mid-December, U.S.
Court of Federal Claims Senior Judge Nancy Firestone ruled that
any other landowners had until December 31 to lodge a claim.
In the weeks since then, the firm signed up over 60 property
owners........

Mississippi River At Minneapolis, Minnesota
Corps Giving Riverfront Land To
Minneapolis........
This week, officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
decided to give the city of Minneapolis much of the land
surrounding the closed Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam.
The city of Minneapolis needs a plan for what to do with the
site, which will be a part of the growing effort to re-purpose
the industrial downtown riverfront into a destination for
residents tourists and visitors.
The Corps of Engineers will remain on-site in order to keep
operating and maintaining the dam for flood control. The
remainder of the land, which includes a few acres of shoreline,
a parking lot and at least part of the decommissioned lock, will
be given to the city to be transformed into a public
space........

Mississippi, Missouri And Meramec Rivers
A Look Back At The NYE Flood Of 2015........
The heavy rainfall that occurred during the final week of 2015
came on fast, dumping nearly 10 inches of water is some parts of
the St. Louis Metro Region. Once the rain stopped falling,
the St. Louis annual rainfall record had been broken.
The Missouri and Mississippi Rivers rose considerably, posing a
threat to levees, especially in the Portage des Sioux area and
inundating parts of St. Charles County. Hundreds of
volunteers turned out to help sand bagging efforts along the
River Des Peres.
The Meramec River Basin was hard-hit, especially in Union,
Pacific, Eureka and Arnold. The Meramec River crested
higher than ever along the St. Louis County border. Over
2,000 businesses and homes were flooded, causing hundreds of
millions of dollars in damage........

Historic East Coast Shipwrecks
A Mysterious Shipwreck Appears On Outer
Banks Island........
A few days ago, a shipwreck appeared on the Outer Banks island
of Ocracoke, North Carolina. The wreck is thought to be
that of the Steamship Home,
which claimed the lives of 90 people in 1837.
Local tour guide Ray Stallings spotted the wreck on December 30.
Some of the wreck's planks were clearly visible in the sand,
while others were only able to be detected by rows of metal
spikes poking from the dune.
The wreck is located on a section of beach known to be home to
the wreck of the Home as
well as the Nomis from
1935. Stallings says that this wreck comes and goes, and
many believe it is the wreck of the
Nomis. He says he
prefers to believe the wreck is the
