It’s the view out of Paisa Harbor looking out into ski
chute. It was in the morning as the sun was coming up over
the Missouri Side. As you can see, the ice had tried to
creep up on us in the night. Good thing I got up and chased

Reservoirs On The Missouri To See Normal Levels........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are anticipating that their goal of having 56.8 million acre feet of water stored in the reservoirs of the Missouri River by March 1, 2011. The reservoirs at Fort Peck and Garrison will begin the year just over normal levels, but the Oahe Reservoir will be a bit below normal. According to the Corps, 2010 had the third highest runoff levels in the past 110 years........

Hydroelectric Plants Paying Off Cities........
Hastings, Minnesota is one of seven cities and two counties in Minnesota that own hydroelectric power plants. Once the Hastings facility was paid off in December of 2009, it has earned the city around $450,000. Projected earnings for 2011 are expected to be $600,000. The plant is located between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers locks and dam and put out about enough power to supply 3,000 homes........

Date Set For Levee Trial........
This spring, the case of three southwestern Illinois counties that are suing the federal government over the metro east levees will be heard in a federal courtroom. At issue is the changes that the Federal Emergency Management Agency made to the flood maps in the Metro East. FEMA had deemed the 50-plus year old levees deficient to the point of not meeting the minimum certification level. The trial date has been set for April 16th........

While the lock and dam and ferries around St. Louis tend to shock fish in the Mississippi River, offering an easy meal for the bald eagles that winter in the area, eagles come to the area every year for the warmer climate as well. Conservation efforts have led to an increase in the eagle population to 20,000 birds in the lower 48 states. Organized eagle watching opportunities will be held at Valley Park's World Bird Sanctuary, the National Great Rivers Museum, Pere Marquette State Park, and at the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower........

Human Remains Found Along Mississippi River........
Tuesday, a worker from Fitzgerald Marine Services discovered a partial human skeleton along the banks of the Mississippi River just east of East Prairie, Missouri. Terry Parker, Coroner of Mississippi County, stated that the remains are definitely human, but he does not know who it may be. The skeleton will be sent to a forensic pathologist in Farmington, Missouri where further testing will be done........

Evidence Asian Carp Making Inroads Into Lake Michigan........
Scientists have reported that over the past year, DNA from Asian carp has been discovered in 58 water samples that were taken from locations on the Lake side of the electric barriers. The researchers warn that the discovery does indicate the presence of carp, but does not show how many fish are present. The DNA findings are at the center of the legal disputes concerning the closure of the Chicago shipping locks........

Proposed E15 Label Garners NMMA Comments........
Monday, the National Marine Manufacturers Association offered comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency about the proposed labels that are intended to keep consumers from mistakenly refueling with E15. The E15 had been approved for use in 2007 model year and newer cars and trucks, but not older vehicles or marine engines. The NMMA states that the labels do not provide adequate warning to consumers about the hazards inherent to potential misfueling........

SE Missouri Had Highest Number Of Drownings in 2010........
The Missouri State Water Patrol reported that Southeast Missouri, or District 4, was the leader of the state in drownings and drug arrests during 2010. Statewide, there were 46 drownings, 15 of which occurred in District 4. 11 of those drownings occurred during August. Water Patrol officers made 31 arrests for boating while intoxicated in District 4, while 350 BWI arrests were made statewide. There were 378 misdemeanor drug arrests, and 34 felony arrests. Statewide, 767 misdemeanor and 54 felony drug arrests were made........

Fish Kill Probably Caused By Disease........
Officials from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission stated that a fish kill that began on December 29th along a 17 mile stretch of the Arkansas River was most likely caused by disease. While test results that will determine what happened to an estimated 83,000 drum will take about a month to come back, the Game and Fish Commission speculate that since only one species was affected, disease is the probable cause........

The largest provider of dredging services in the United States, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, recently announced that they have bought up the assets of L.W. Matteson, Inc. Matteson, based in Burlington, Iowa, has one of the biggest fleets of dedicated, transportable dredging and earthmoving tools along the inland river system. Matteson had worked for state and local governments, as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Great Lakes trusts that by putting the resources of both companies together, growth and new project opportunities will be attained........

Becky Thatcher's Hull Still In The Ohio River........
Even though is has been nearly a year since the Becky Thatcher sank at her mooring in the Ohio River, she is still at the bottom of the River and the cause of her sinking is still unknown. Back in March, Jeffery Levin, owner of the Becky Thatcher, had contracted a company to remove the vessel from the River. To date, about 1,000 yards of debris, including the wheelhouse and the first two stories of the vessel, have been removed. Early this year, divers will be dispatched to survey the Becky Thatcher's hull........

Quilts Inspired By Rivers On Display........
The National Great Rivers Museum is exhibiting fifteen, 18 by 22 inch quilted panels that were inspired by the River. The display, Rambling River Project, opened Sunday, and will run through Saturday, February 26th. The rules for the quilters required the use of the same blue material to represent the River, and the River had to enter and exit each panel using specific widths. The result is a continuous Rambling River, meandering through different scenes........

Eagle Watching Tours Start Monday........
The free eagle watching tours offered by Pere Marquette State Park will begin today. Tours will run throughout January, February and into early March. The tours will begin with a presentation at the park, then the eagle watchers will hop a ride on the Brussels Ferry to get to Two Rivers National Wildlife area. The tour will then stop in Hardin, Illinois for lunch, and eventually return to the park. Spaces on the tours are limited, and reservations are being accepted........

Record Turn Out For 2011 Polar Plunge........
Even though the waters of the Illinois River were freezing on New Year's Day, that did not seem to deter around 460 people from taking part in the ninth annual Polar Plunge to benefit the Dream Factory and the South Side Mission's Camp Kearney. Apparently, that is the highest attendance the event has had thus far. While some participants wore silly costumes, others chose to wear as little as possible, stating that they would not be as cold........

Property owners, businesses, local governments and conservationists have been squabbling over land use regulations in the 72 mile stretch of the Mississippi River in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. At issue is that some believe the current laws governing the land adjacent to the River is not strict enough, and some believe that there is no need for changes. The St. Paul-based group, Friends of the Mississippi River is arguing for common-sense laws that balances economic development with the health and scenic values of the River........

Shelter Supporters Take The Plunge........
At high noon on Saturday, supporters of the Hope Rescues Animal Shelter participated in the first annual Polar Plunge. About 80 spectators gathered at the Alton Marina to watch 15 Polar Plunge divers take a chilly dip in the Mississippi River. By Friday, $1,105 had already been raised for the Shelter, eclipsing the goal of raising $500. It is expected that donations may climb even higher by Monday.........

Buoy Mistaken For Body In The River........
Around 3 pm a man enjoying the unseasonably warm weather by watching for eagles, saw something green floating in the Mississippi River. The man than thought he heard something and alerted authorities. When it was determined that the man had viewed a buoy in the water, he quickly left the Riverfront. It is fortunate that all that was in the water was a buoy, as responders would have had problems launching a rescue vessel on account of ice........

Alton Polar Plunge Will Help Animals........
Alton may have a new tradition beginning this New Years Day: a Polar Plunge to raise money and awareness for the Hope Rescues Animal Shelter. The Plunge will take place at noon, adjacent to the public boat ramp at the Alton Marina. Between 10 and 15 people have signed up to take a dip into the frigid Mississippi River. One of the Alton Polar Plunge organizers, Alison Dreith, quipped that she had never taken a dip in the Mississippi River during summer........

The Mississippi River Is Sweeter After Corn Syrup Spill........
Friday, around 6,000 gallons of corn syrup spilled into the Mississippi River near Keokuk, Iowa. Apparently, maintenance was being performed at the Roquette America corn processing plant on Thursday, and a worker forgot to close a drain valve after cleaning a tank. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources stated that the syrup is toxic to fish, but the dilution factor of the Mississippi River means the incident is not likely to cause a major impact to the environment........

Minnesota Files Suit Against 3M For Chemical Cleanup........
Thursday, Lori Swanson, Minnesota's Attorney General, filed suit against the 3M Co. demanding payment for cleanup costs for pollution caused by chemicals leaching into the Mississippi River. Bill Nelson, a spokesman for 3M, stated that the chemicals in question are perflurochemicals, and they are not hazardous materials, as defined by state and federal law. Back in 2007, an agreement between 3M and Minnesota was forged to resolve issues that arose because of high PFC concentrations in the drinking water........
