Mississippi River System

 

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

MILE 172.3 - MILE 172.0 - OVERHEAD HIGH WIRE OPERATIONS/SAFETY ZONE/INTERMITTENT RIVER CLOSURES
Continuing until approximately May 1, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., each day, weather permitting, Ameren Electrical Contractors are conducting high wire work and conductor removal/replacement operations in the vicinity of Mile 172.0. To facilitate these operations, the COTP
Upper Mississippi River has issued a Safety Zone, extending between approximate Miles 172.3 and 172.0. Intermittent daily river closures are necessary to facilitate this operation. The time/duration of each closure will be dependent upon current conditions and the Safety Zone will be activated/deactivated each day and transmitted to mariners via VHF-FM Channel 16. Mariners may contact U.S. Coast Guard Sector Western Rivers, to request permission to transit this area. No vessel will be permitted to enter this Safety Zone, unless given permission by the COTP Upper
Mississippi River.

ILLINOIS RIVER

ILLINOIS WATERWAY - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
The following zones are in the high water watch phase in accordance with the Illinois Waterway Action Plan Annex:
Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0) and
Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3).
Mariners should exercise caution and minimize wake in all high water zones. The laying-up on saturated levees is prohibited. Mariners should be experienced in high water conditions and avoid downstreaming operations. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in debris and maneuver appropriately. Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have occurred and take appropriate action to prevent barge breakaways. Exercise caution in all passing/meeting situations as swift current may be present. Navigation buoys may have been dragged off station, so remain alert while transiting. Recreational traffic is discouraged..

A celebration of Life was held at Kampsville, IL for the Goldenrod Showboat. The boat was scheduled to head for the scrap yard on April 1st.

The Goldenrod suffered irreparable damage in 2015 during efforts to save it from the flooding Illinois River.  Under the direction of Jacob Medford, vice president of the Historic Riverboat Preservation Association, volunteers then started removing artifacts such as chandeliers, gilded mirrors, photographs, and furnishings from the vessel to be placed in a Goldenrod museum at a future date.

Mississippi River Basin

Flood  Outlook........

 

Earlier this month, the National Weather Service (NWS) released an updated flooding forecast for the Mississippi River Basin and it's sub-basins, which showed little changes from the prior flood outlook estimate.

 

The NWS is predicting normal to near-normal flooding risk for the majority of the Mississippi River Basin, with an elevated flood risk along the Ohio River Valley and some of it's tributaries, as well as portions of the Upper Mississippi River.  Drier than normal conditions are forecasted for the Missouri River Basin.

 

The NWS notes that localized heavy rainfall or storms may cause localized flooding at any time.  The NWS adds that the Missouri River is continuing to experience wide-spread persistent drought along most of the Great Plains into Montana and Wyoming........

30 March Update:

Yesterday was our biggest day of travel yet. We went through the picnic lock first then travel to 120 miles to pebble marina. Great having a downstream push. The weather is to get bad today around 11 AM so we are getting up and traveling 44 miles to Paris landing. We plan to stay there tonight and tomorrow and let the bad weather blow over before we continue our trip. May try to bypass green turtle Bay and go straight to Paducah which will be another long day with one loc

Sad News

Nancy Akers Has Passed Away.....


Obituary
Nancy Lue Akers of Wentzville passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the age of 70 years.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Fred Akers of Wentzville; two brothers-in-law, Steven Akers and wife, Irene of Dorr, MI and Clifton Akers and wife, Paulette Egmon of Maryville, IL; other relatives, and many friends.

Nancy Lue Akers was born July 23, 1951 in St. Louis; daughter of the late Robert Field Satterfield and wife, Helen Greulich Satterfield. She graduated with an Associates Degree from Forest Park Community College in St. Louis. Nancy was married to Mr. Fred Akers July 29, 1972. Nancy retired after 30+ years with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.

Nancy was confirmed as a teen in the Emmaus Evangelical and Reformed Church. Later, she began following Krishna Consciousness.

She was a member of the Con Trio Yacht Club. Nancy was a huge Beatles fan; especially “her Beatle” George Harrison. She loved horses and rode many times as a youth. She also loved her mother-in-law’s Italian Sauce; she called it “gravy”. She retained all the Italian recipes and passed them on to her nieces.

Memorials requested to Humane Society of Missouri.

Nancy will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

New Alton Riverfront Commission........

 

Cory Jobe, President and CEO of the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau is pleased that Alton Mayor David Goins and members of the Alton City Council have created new Alton riverfront Commission.

 

There will be representatives from the land development industry, business and finance, tourism, recreation, public safety, the riverfront casino, a member of the public, a former member of the City Council and the river industry on the council.

 

The Alton City Council passed the resolution that would create the commission during last week's meeting.  The resolution must still go through the ordinance process before any members can be seated........

Stream Team Clean Up

Meramec River Near Robertsville, Missouri ........

 

More than 100 volunteers headed out to Robertsville State Park and cleaned up trash from along the Meramec River on March 19, 2022.

 

Several tons of trash were removed, and hundreds of pounds of recyclable materials were collected and properly disposed of.  The event was hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation and DomeLife........

The Grafton Ferry is opening for the season on April 22, 2022 !

 

Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm.

Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.

 

The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

The United States Congress passed an Act that vested land in the state of Illinois for construction of a man made navigable canal (CSSC) to connect Lake Michigan and the Chicago River with the Illinois and Mississippi River.

In 1887 the Illinois General Assembly decided to reverse the flow of the Chicago River through civil engineering by taking water from Lake Michigan and discharging it into the Mississippi River watershed through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

The hydrologic connection was made in 1900 giving commercial navigation access to the Mississippi watershed, but along with that came Chicago's sewage.

Sad News

Nancy Akers Has Passed Away.....


Obituary
Nancy Lue Akers of Wentzville passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the age of 70 years.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Fred Akers of Wentzville; two brothers-in-law, Steven Akers and wife, Irene of Dorr, MI and Clifton Akers and wife, Paulette Egmon of Maryville, IL; other relatives, and many friends.

Nancy Lue Akers was born July 23, 1951 in St. Louis; daughter of the late Robert Field Satterfield and wife, Helen Greulich Satterfield. She graduated with an Associates Degree from Forest Park Community College in St. Louis. Nancy was married to Mr. Fred Akers July 29, 1972. Nancy retired after 30+ years with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.

Nancy was confirmed as a teen in the Emmaus Evangelical and Reformed Church. Later, she began following Krishna Consciousness.

She was a member of the Con Trio Yacht Club. Nancy was a huge Beatles fan; especially “her Beatle” George Harrison. She loved horses and rode many times as a youth. She also loved her mother-in-law’s Italian Sauce; she called it “gravy”. She retained all the Italian recipes and passed them on to her nieces.

Memorials requested to Humane Society of Missouri.

Nancy will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

30 March Update:

Yesterday was our biggest day of travel yet. We went through the picnic lock first then travel to 120 miles to pebble marina. Great having a downstream push. The weather is to get bad today around 11 AM so we are getting up and traveling 44 miles to Paris landing. We plan to stay there tonight and tomorrow and let the bad weather blow over before we continue our trip. May try to bypass green turtle Bay and go straight to Paducah which will be another long day with one loc

Missouri Fishing News From The Current River

Angler Reels In Smallmouth Bass With A Parasitic Lamprey Attached........

 

A little over a week ago, angler John Blomberg was floating and fishing along the Current River when he reeled in a smallmouth bass with a little surprise attached: a six inch long parasitic chestnut lamprey.

 

Blomberg shared photos of his catch on social media, which drew comments ranging from disgust to fearful, as the lamprey looked kind of like a leach whose head had been replaced with a toothy suction cup.

 

Surprisingly, this parasite that has such an alien appearance is native to Missouri waters, as there are six species of lampreys found in Missouri waters.  Only two species are parasitic, the chestnut and silver lamprey........

 March 22, 2022 – Last summer was the first full season boaters were required to use an engine cutoff switch as a result of a new law that went into effect on April 1, 2021. The law mandates the use of either a helm or outboard lanyard or wireless engine cutoff switch (ECOS) on certain vessels less than 26 feet when traveling on plane or above displacement speed.

What have boaters learned while complying with the new law?

“There are no rules for how or where to attach an ECOS lanyard to your body,” said BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner. “But there are some things to think about that will help you wear it when you need.” The boating nonprofit offers top tips for wearing your ECOS lanyard:

1. There are four common locations on the captain’s body to attach an ECOS lanyard. If one doesn’t work for your kind of boating, try another. Wrist-worn lanyards that have a quick-adjust hook-and-loop strap are commonly used on personal watercraft and may also work well at the helm of a powerboat. Life jackets often have a plastic ring to connect a lanyard clip, while pant belt loops are also convenient, and since that location is lower on the body, it may be less prone to snagging. Some boaters prefer attaching it even lower and secure the ECOS lanyard around a thigh or ankle. Just use caution to not overstretch the lanyard.
2. According to the American Boat & Yacht Council, typical ECOS lanyards are 48 to 72 inches when fully extended. It’s OK to adjust the lanyard length based on boat configuration and operator location. “It’s a balance in finding freedom of movement and ensuring it won’t wrap around something or get snagged,” said Sensenbrenner.
3. Some ECOS devices eliminate the lanyard and rely on wireless proximity devices to shut down an engine if the operator goes overboard. While these wireless ECOS, typically worn as a bracelet or fob, cost more and require more care, they may be the easiest to wear for some boaters. Fobs can also be attached to a lanyard and worn around the neck, placed in a pocket or clipped to a belt or life jacket.
4. A lanyard clip that you can use with one hand also makes ECOS wearing easier.
5. No matter which kind of ECOS used, boaters need to learn how to bypass, rearm or reset an ECOS quickly in the event of an activation. Read the manual and practice at the dock.
6. When you welcome guests and crew aboard, tell them how the ECOS works and the potential hazard created by ECOS activation and rapid deceleration. Having everyone keep clear of the lanyard is, as Martha Stewart says, “a good thing.”
7. Even the simplest ECOS need some care. A faded lanyard may not be a reason to replace, but it is a reason to take a closer look. Plastic lanyard clips can become brittle, metal clips can corrode and the lanyard line can lose elasticity. These items are inexpensive to replace – and its good practice to keep a spare aboard in case the captain goes overboard and the crew needs to facilitate a swift and safe retrieval. Be sure to let your crew know where the spare is located in your pre-trip briefing

Iowa Director of Natural Resources

Fishing Without a License......

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Director Kayla Lyon, cited by her department earlier this month for fishing without a license, said it was an honest mistake to let her license expire before a fishing excursion on the Mississippi River.

Lyon was out with Iowa DNR staff doing a combination of touring and paddlefishing March 18 near Bellevue in Jackson County when she was informed she didn’t have a valid license, she said in an email Monday.

MILE 364.2 - L/D CLOSURES - UPDATE
On March 23, 24, 29 and 30, 2022, from 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., each day, L/D 19, in the vicinity of Mile 364.2, will be closed to navigation for repairs. During these closures, mariners are requested NOT to tie up along the guidewalls. Mariners may contact the L/D via VHF-FM Channel 14 or at (319) 524-2631, for additional information

29 March 1956 In River History

The Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet was authorized by an Act of Congress to provide an emergency outlet from the Mississippi River in the interest of National defense and general commerce and as a safer and shorter route between the Port of New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico.

Construction of the MRGO channel began in 1958 and was completed in 1968.

The channel was dredged through shallow bays, coastal marshes and cypress swamps.

Sad News

Nancy Akers Has Passed Away.....


Obituary
Nancy Lue Akers of Wentzville passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the age of 70 years.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Fred Akers of Wentzville; two brothers-in-law, Steven Akers and wife, Irene of Dorr, MI and Clifton Akers and wife, Paulette Egmon of Maryville, IL; other relatives, and many friends.

Nancy Lue Akers was born July 23, 1951 in St. Louis; daughter of the late Robert Field Satterfield and wife, Helen Greulich Satterfield. She graduated with an Associates Degree from Forest Park Community College in St. Louis. Nancy was married to Mr. Fred Akers July 29, 1972. Nancy retired after 30+ years with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.

Nancy was confirmed as a teen in the Emmaus Evangelical and Reformed Church. Later, she began following Krishna Consciousness.

She was a member of the Con Trio Yacht Club. Nancy was a huge Beatles fan; especially “her Beatle” George Harrison. She loved horses and rode many times as a youth. She also loved her mother-in-law’s Italian Sauce; she called it “gravy”. She retained all the Italian recipes and passed them on to her nieces.

Memorials requested to Humane Society of Missouri.

Nancy will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

March 28 Update:

 

70 miles for locks in eight hours. Running much faster due to the decrease in the current. Period and dinner tonight with Lou a guy we met at Midway Marina. Had good Mexican food and found out the marina had diesel at a great price so we got back from dinner unhooked everything and drove to the fuel dock and filled up both tanks and the 2(35) gallon drums I bought in Mobile.
We will use the extra fuel for our trip from Paducah Kentucky to Hoppies in Kimmswick which is 200 miles mostly upstream on the Mississippi

Boat Wholesale Deliveries Picking Up......

 

The National Marine Manfacturing Association Monthly Shipment Report has been updated through January 2022.  It shows:

• wholesale shipments of new boats increased 6.1 percent in January 2022, compared to January 2021

• and total wholesale boat, engine, and trailer deliveries were up 1.6 percent year over year.

NMMA President Frank Hugelmeyer said “Despite supply chain headwinds, we anticipate the current trajectory of boat, engine and trailer deliveries to continue in the coming months as the industry works to balance inventory levels.”

Additional insights from January’s MSR include:

• Wholesale deliveries of boats, engines and trailers in 2021 were up 19.6 percentyear over year.
• Driving growth of wholesale shipments in January 2022 were personal watercraft (PWC) deliveries, up 38.3 percent from January 2021, and boat trailer shipments, up 37.4 percent year over year.

The Grafton Ferry is opening for the season on April 22, 2022 !

 

Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm.

Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.

 

The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

The Apple Shed Restaurant in Batchtown ( Calhoun County ) burned to the ground. An investigator with the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office indicated the fire may have started in a downstairs kitchen.

Grafton Ferry Reopens

 

 

The Grafton Ferry is opening for the season on April 22, 2022 !

 

Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm.

Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.

 

The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

The Ohio River Basin flood reached a peak. Ten inches rains over a wide area of the Ohio River Basin inundated cities in Ohio, drowning 467 people, and causing $147 million dollars damage. The Miami River at Dayton reached a level eight feet higher than ever before. The flood, caused by warm weather and heavy rains, was the second mostly deadly of record for the nation.

Asian Carp

Deterrent Research...

 

Barkley Lock closures in western Kentucky are helping researchers determine more about the movements of the invasive Asian carp and how best stop their  spread.

Officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and partner agencies installed a bio-acoustic fish fence in 2019, at an angle across the lower lock approach so they could determine if it helps prevent the spread of the fish from the Cumberland River into Lake Barkley. The fish fence is a curtain of bubbles and the underwater lights and sounds.

During the study period, which is now forecast to conclude in fall 2023, researchers turn the fence on for a week and off for a week and watch the movement of tagged silver carp through it.

299 Year Old Dugout Canoe

Great Story......

 

 

Good mornin friends...
To say I have developed a love affair with old canoes and wooden boats would be an understatement...I am intrigued with their history and the hands that made them...
Over a year ago, I stumbled across and purchased a dugout canoe, one made from a Log and my intent was to use it for outside decoration around our home or cabin...I took a few pictures of it and sent it to Curtis Copeland, of the Society of Ozarkian Hillcrofters, who then forwarded it to Missouri State University Archeology Professor, Jack Ray...I was contacted shortly afterward by Professor Ray stating he would like to come see it...I stated he would be welcome to come look at it and when he arrived the next Saturday, he had the Head Professor of Archeology, Neal Lopinot, with him...Unusual to say the least, was the fact the Professor Lopinot and wife Judy discovered they were from the same hometown, Columbia, Illinois and the Professors brother Mark, was in Judy's class...
They began to inspect the Dugout canoe and after a bit, shared with me that they thought my dugout was much older than I thought and it should be researched deeper through carbon dating...
I hesitated due to cost but eventually they convinced me of its worthiness...
Three weeks later I received a call from Professor Lopinot, asking if I was sitting down?..I replied I wasn't, and he stated I probably should!
The dugout canoes carbon dating had came back and was from the year 1723 with canoe build date approximately 1790...
In my wildest dreams and expectations, never did I ever imagine in my searches for old wood canoes and boats that I would discover a 299 year old treasure such as this!...
I have researched several thoughts and ideas on the placement of this historical piece made and used by either Native Americans, or trappers of this region...
I am maintaining ownership and am interested only in it being displayed some place, where our citizens of this area and visitors could come and view it without having to pay an extravagant fee to see it...
Yes, it is a historical treasure that has somehow survived the ages and needs to be seen and enjoyed...
It is currently in safe storage and will remain that way until a secure and proper location is decided..
Yep, there is an old saying that, "Every old blind hog will find and acorn" but this old hog found a very, very old one!

The Grafton Ferry is opening for the season on April 22, 2022 !

 

Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm.

Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.

 

The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

March 25, 1933 in Boating History

The U.S.S. Sequoia became the Presidential Yacht
on this day. President Herbert Hoover accepted the newly commissioned USS Sequoia as the official presidential yacht of the United States of America.
It served in that capacity for 44 years there after. It was used by eight presidents as for recreation and an official gathering place.
President Carter sold the U.S.S. Sequia in 1977 to a private firm…..
She is currently owned by the non-profit Sequoia Foundation. The boat serves as a historic charter vessel on the Potomac River in Washington D.C.

Peter Allen announced at the Grafton City Council Meeting that the historic Boat Works building has been approved as a historic site on the state realm and is now headed for those who decide on the National Register of Historic places buildings. The Allen family are the owners of the Loading Dock-Boat House.

Tariffs

US and UK Reach Deal on Tariffs...

 

The US Department of Commerce announced the US and United Kingdom have reached a deal to ease steel and aluminum tariffs, allowing UK steel and aluminum products to enter the US without application of Section 232 tariffs.

Retaliatory tariffs on over $500 million worth of US exports to the UK on goods, including recreational boats made in the US, will be lifted too.

 

Since the 25 percent retaliatory tariffs were levied in 2018 on American-made boats and engines entering the UK, the US exports to the UK declined by more than 60%.

Federal Spending Bill Signed

Benefits Recreational Boating.....

 

The President signed into law last week $1.5 trillion fiscal year 2022 appropriation bills, which includes many recreational boating industry’s funding priorities..

 

DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE
•Provides $1.5 million for the Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account, which would continue the Department’s analysis highlighting the impact that outdoor recreation has on the U.S. economy.
•Includes $64 million for NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, including $5 million for NOAA’s efforts to improve and enhance recreational anglers’ and boaters’ experiences in National Marine Sanctuaries.
Allocates $21.5 million for harmful algal bloom (HABs) research, monitoring, and detection to help accelerate efforts to reduce the severity and impact of HABs.

DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR
• Grants $348 million for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative—a critical program that works to protect and restore the Great Lakes through habitat restoration and the prevention of aquatic invasive species (AIS) and HABs.
•Provides $43 million for efforts to help prevent the spread of AIS, including invasive carp.

 

US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

• Delivers robust funding for several U.S. Army Corps’ projects that are critically important to the recreational boating community, including $350 million for Everglades restoration; $21 million for navigation maintenance; $34.5 million for inland waterway modernization; and $45 million for projects at small or subsistence harbors.
• Directs the USACE to account for recreation-based benefits and costs when considering a project, recognizing the growth of the outdoor recreation industry across the U.S.

Update 3/22/22-good and bad news. The good news is we are at a nicer marina in a covered slip with a courtesy car. The bad news is the weather. Lots of rain here and as far north as 150 miles. All chart predictions show rising 15 to 20 feet over the next couple of days in an already high river. We will have to stay here at least a day or so and possibly a week or more!

The Grafton Ferry is opening for the season on April 22, 2022 !

 

Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm.

Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.

 

The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

   The Robert E. Lee, a once popular riverboat on the St. Louis riverfront, burned down to it's hull while moored just north of downtown St. Louis.

   Firefighters arrived in the early morning hours and fought the fierce flames from both the land and from the water, but were unable to save the vessel.
  The boat had been bought by a new owner in an auction in 2008 and was being rehabbed to get it ready for a move to St. Charles.

The fire was called "Suspicious."

Grafton Ferry Reopens in One Month!

 

 

The Grafton Ferry is opening for the season on April 22, 2022 !

 

Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm.

Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.

 

The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

What an amazing opening weekend!!!!! Thank you to everyone that came out to support us and help kick off the 2022 season. It was great seeing so many familiar faces as well as meeting new slip holders and their families and friends.
I could not be more PROUD of my staff. They are truly more than employees, they are family!!!! They absolutely rocked this weekend. THANK YOU to my returning staff who definitely stepped up and managed the front and back of the house flawlessly.
THANK YOU to the new additions to the staff that completely blew all expectations out of the water. I look forward to this season and getting the rest of my returning staff and few more new hires on the schedule once the season is in full swing. GOING TO BE THE BEST SEASON EVER WITH THE BEST STAFF EVER!!!!!

Steel Prices Slowing Barge Construction........

 

The COVID-19 lockdown and the rebound from it had already sent steel prices on a wild ride as the steel industry, like other industries, struggled to second-guess and keep up with the sometimes unpredictable decisions of consumers and businesses. Just before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, steel prices were falling slightly from their spikes last year.

The Ukraine crisis sent the prices of all commodities, many of them carried by barge, upward again. Russia and Ukraine are both major exporters of steel, wheat, vegetable oil and fertilizer, and Ukraine is also a major corn exporter. The prices and supply of all of these commodities have knock-on price effects across a wide range of goods.

Similarly, the skyrocketing price of steel has slowed new barge construction, according to River Transport News. As contracts are fulfilled that had locked in lower steel prices from months ago, barge-builders and boat-builders will undoubtedly study the steel market before committing to new building decisions.

The publicly available virtual observatory includes historical and current information about water quality in the rivers, including near real-time data from the Great Rivers Ecological Observatory Network (GREON) being implemented by NGRREC. The GREON buoys collect data on water temperature, oxygen, conductivity, turbidity, chlorophyll-a, blue-green algae, nitrate and weather information.

The GLTG Virtual Observatory is intended for use by scientists, students, land managers, and policy makers in federal, state, and local institutions.

Grafton Ferry

 

 

The Grafton Ferry is opening for the season on April 22, 2022 !

 

Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm.

Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.

 

The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry Road, which is just off of Highway 94.
