Mississippi River At Memphis,
Tennessee
The Interstate 40 Bridge Will
Reopen Next Week........
On Wednesday, transportation
officials said that the Interstate 40 bridge linking Arkansas
and Tennessee that was shut down after a crack was found in span
will begin to reopen to traffic next week.
The Arkansas and Tennessee
departments of transportation announced that the eastbound lanes
of the Hernando De Soto over the Mississippi River will reopen
to limited traffic on Monday morning. The westbound lanes are
scheduled to open on August 6th.
The Interstate 40bridge was closed
on May 11 after a crack was discovered in one of the two 900
foot horizontal steel beams crucial to the bridge's structural
integrity.
An inspector with the Arkansas
Department of Transportation reported that the bridge inspector
that missed the crack in 2019 and 202 has been fired. The crack
has been visible since 0216........

Mississippi River At Hannibal,
Missouri
Work Continuing On Hannibal's
Riverfront........
Recently, a formal ribbon-cutting
ceremony was held to celebrate the work completed on Hannibal's
riverfront project, but that doesn't mean that there is no more
work to be done.
Andy Dorian, Hannibal's director of
central services says that they have been very busy with
finishing touches, such as adding signage and striping the
parking lot.
Even though there is still some
finishing work to be done, people have been using the facility.
Aron Lee, assistant director of central services says that there
have been plenty of people on the riverfront, residents and
tourists alike........

Another tug test at Melvin Price Tuesday. Gates are down but
no normal pool. Grafton at 15.1 and no water up north but
pool level has been around 416 and now only 417. Normally we
would be at 419 with these conditions. There is no normal
pool anymore.

Mississippi River Journeys
Paddlers Stop In Vicksburg On
Their Trip Down The Mississippi River........
Early Tuesday afternoon, Hank Kohler
got out of his canoe in Vicksburg, Mississippi on his trip down
the Mississippi River which is intended to raise funds for
nature conservation.
42 years ago, Kohler, his brother
and two friends left central Minnesota and paddled northwards to
Hudson Bay, where they spied a polar bear. Now, Koehler left
from the same spot and turned his canoe south, heading towards
the Gulf of Mexico.
This trip isn't about the challenge,
but rather to raise funds through donations for the National
Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa. The
museum has a youth program called CAARE, which affects some
5,000 middle school to college students each year by teaching
them about conservation........

River History....
July 27, 1817 in River River History
The steamboat era began in the city of St. Louis on July 27, 1817 when
the "Zebulon M. Pike" arrived. Rapids in the river north of the city
made St. Louis the northernmost navigable port for many large boats. St.
Louis was quickly transformed into a bustling boomtown, commercial
center, and inland port.

Mississippi River Near Grafton, Illinois
Corps' Project Will Restore Island
Habitat........
This summer, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
will begin a two year project intended to restore island habitat
in the Mississippi River near Grafton, Illinois.
The Corps has awarded a $7.2 million contract
to Luhr Brothers Inc. of Columbia, Illinois for the project,
which according to Corps' public affairs specialist Janet
Meredith, will involve dredging and the installation of rock
structures. She adds that locks and dams have reduced the
amount of island habitat.
This project is part of the Upper Mississippi
River Restoration Program, which over 35 years has completed
approximately 55 projects on 100,000 acres between
Minneapolis-St. Paul to St. Louis........

Lower Mississippi River Levees
Corps' Airborne Levee Assessments Causing
Concern.........
Earlier this month, the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers has been using a helicopter equipped with light
detection and ranging or LIDAR to collect data on the depth and
soundness of the levees on both the land and river sides of the
levees.
According to Kent Parrish, senior Mississippi
River project manager for the Corps, the process is like an MRI
on the brain. THe LIDAR can look 150 feet down into the ground
and reveal what is sand, silt, clay or gravel.
5th Louisiana Levee District President
Reynold Minsky says that his office has received several calls
from concerned citizens reporting a helicopter hovering over the
levees carrying what appears to be a torpedo.
The helicopter and it's crew will be making
three passes over some 800 miles of mainline levee between the
Arkansas state line and New Orleans. Parrish says that the data
collected will help the Corps mitigate sand boils and
seepage........

News
Release From BoatUS
CHICAGO,
July 26, 2021 – Women sailors from all over the country will be
heading to Jackson Park Yacht Club on Saturday, September 11 for
the 20th annual
Women’s Sailing Conference. The National Women’s Sailing
Association (NWSA)
event sponsored by Boat Owners Association of The United States
(BoatUS) offers a day of fun, camaraderie and exceptional
learning experiences. A wide array of sessions will be offered —
from diesel engine basics and knot tying to reefing and racing.
For the first time, both in-person and online attendance options
are offered.
Said conference Co-Chair Capt. Chiaka Patterson, “Join an
amazing group of fabulous women as we attend a day long,
enriching sailing event, hear inspirational women speakers who
are national leaders in the sport, and make new friends along
the way. There is something for everyone whether you are
completely new to sailing, intermediate, or advanced in your
knowledge.”
This year’s conference theme, “Sharing Sailing,” spotlights the
issue that minority sailors represent a small fraction of
sailors nationwide. However, this year’s conference site,
Jackson Park Yacht Club, based in Jackson Park Harbor on the
city’s South Side makes claim to the largest community of
minority sailors in the country with three-hundred of the club’s
400 members of African-American descent. In recent years, the
club’s community outreach included a free
kids sailing camp and affordable sailing lessons for adults.
The conference begins on Friday evening the night before with a
welcome mixer for early arrivals. Saturday’s continental
breakfast is included, as is lunch where the 2021 Women’s
Sailing Award honoree, avid West Coast sailboat racer and the
first Black woman to serve as commodore of the historic Los
Angeles Yacht Club,
Capt. Marie Rogers, will speak on her experiences in sharing
sailing. A fundraising raffle to support the Women’s Sailing
Foundation and an opportunity for social networking cap off the
event Saturday evening.
Some of the
conference presenters slated to lead hands-on land- and
water-based workshops and seminars include Capts. Patterson and
Rogers as well as Beth Burlingame,
Nancy Early, Debbie Huntsman,
Margaret Pommert, Rachel Zoe Miller and Lynda Stephens. Also
slated to present are Barbara Robertson,
Doris Colgate, Gail Turluck,
Pat Dieselman, Debby Grimm and Chris Garbacz.
In-person conference attendance is $210 ($170 for NWSA members),
and online l-only passes $75 ($35 for NWSA members). To register
go to
nwsa.quvent.com.

The Grafton Ferry re-opened on this day with a ribbon cutting ceremony
after being shut down for 3 years.

Upper Mississippi River
Corps Keeping Tabs On Low Water
Levels........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
St. Paul District is keeping a close eye on the Mississippi
River levels as the drought conditions continue throughout
Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.
At this time, however, the low water
conditions are not affecting shipping conditions along the
Mississippi River, and as a result, navigation is continuing.
According to Dan Faching with the
St. Pail District, these low flow conditions along the Upper
Mississippi River are exactly why the locks were constructed.
The locks, in conjunction with dredging operations is what
maintains the navigational channel........

Missouri River Shipping
The Missouri River Navigation Season Has
Been Reduced........
Even with all of the rainfall across central
Missouri a few weeks ago, it might be difficult to believe
drought conditions along the northern reaches of the Missouri
River have prompted U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to reduce the
Missouri RIver navigation season by one month.
THe outflow from the Gavins Point Dam in
South Dakota will be reduced to 1,500 cubic feet per second,
meaning that the navigation season will be eight months instead
of nine. This year, it will end on December 1 at St. Louis.
Corps officials say that with drought
conditions continuing in the Upper Missouri River Basin,
reducing navigation is a necessary water conservation measure to
guarantee continued service to all authorized purposes of the
river in the short and long term........

Mississippi River At Memphis,
Tennessee
I-40 Bridge Won't Reopen Until
August........
The Tennessee Department of
Transportation Recently announced that it will likely be into
August before the Interstate 40/Hernando De Soto bridge spanning
the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee can reopen to
traffic.
Currently, contractors are working
on Phase III of the repair project, which started when a large
crack was discovered in the Hernando De Soto Bridge between
Arkansas and Tennessee.
The Transportation Commissioner,
Clay Bright had previously stated that the construction project
would likely be wrapped up by at least the end of July........

Illinois River Near Bath, Illinois
Asian Carp Fishing Tournament Is Returning
Next Month........
The central Illinois fishing tournament that
was cancelled for the past two years due to flooding and then
the COVID-19 outbreak will be returning to Bath, Illinois next
month.
The Redneck Fishing Tournament is slated for
August 6 - 7, 2021. This tournament is one of the more creative
responses to the Asian carp invasion into the Illinois River.
THe fish are known to jump into the air with
the sound of boat engines, so instead of using fishing poles to
catch the carp, they will be using nets to catch them in the
air........

Mississippi River Personalities
The Last Mississippi River Gauge Reader
Reflects On Career........
Recently, a short ceremony marked the end of
an era, as 81 year old Art Denkmann was presented with a
certificate of appreciation by the St. Louis Engineers
District's water control team for 56 years of service.
Denkmann was the last remaining manual
Mississippi River gauge reader. He says that they have become
dinosaurs, as technology has taken over. He was the last man to
visually verify the gauge reading on a daily basis.
The manual gauge readers have been replaced
by an electronic data collection platform. This system can
provide a river level reading every 15 minutes, and send it via
satellite telemetry to update the numbers online........

River History....
July 24, 1915 in River History
Thousands of horrified onlookers witnessed Chicago’s most deadly
disaster on the morning of July 24, 1915. Warehouse workers along the
Chicago River shouted, “Look out, she’s tipping!” Suddenly the
fully-loaded passenger ship Eastland began her slow roll into infamy,
killing 844 of the more than 2,500 passengers.

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri
Hannibal Riverfront Dedicated With
Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony........
Thursday morning, a large group of people
gathered along the Hannibal riverfront to take a look around at
the new amenities and to celebrate the riverfront's recently
completed makeover.
Hannibal Mayor James Hark spoke, saying that
the riverfront renovation project's origins goes all the way
back to 1996. After remaining dormant for 20 years, the project
was revived after a series of deteriorating infrastructure items
were coming to a head.
Andy Dorian, director of central services
says that they decided to address all of the riverfront issues
at once, Groundbreaking took place in 2018, however, the second
worst flood of all time occurred in the middle of the project
causing delays, followed by the COVID-19 outbreak bringing more
delays.........

Multi-trillion Dollar
Infrastructure Legislation
Inland
Waterways
Secretary Of Transportation Says Plan
Will Benefit Inland Waterways........
While Congress kicks around the
multi-trillion dollar infrastructure legislation intended to
invest in roads, bridges, rail, ports and broadband across the
United States, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg
is on tour to promote the deal.
Buttigieg recently discussed the benefits he
believes that the bill will bring to the Midwest, a major hub
for shipping. He adds that the plan would invest billions in
Midwestern ports.
Buttigieg says that transportation is all
about connections, however, those connections have become rusty
because of lack of investment in the past. He claims that now
is the time to get it right for the future........

Gammel Dansk
is a bitters (herbal alcoholic preparation) produced by
Arcus-Gruppen in Oslo, Norway, originally developed and produced
by Danish Distillers in Denmark.[1][2] Traditionally it is drunk
by Danes at certain festive occasions, often in connection with
breakfast meals, brunch or at wedding anniversaries and birthday
celebrations (which in Denmark traditionally begin in the
morning).[3] The name "Gammel Dansk" translates directly from
Danish as "Old Danish"

River History....
July 23, 2008 in River History
An accident on Mississippi River in New Orleans spilled 280,000 gallons
of oil into the river.
The Mel Oliver was pushing a barge loaded with fuel oil when it suddenly
changed course and veered into the path of the ship Tintomara.
The captain of the Mel Oliver was not on board. He had left the pushboat
several days earlier to drive to Illinois for personal reasons. The
Apprentice Mate and the captain had an arrangement where they would
cover for each other when one wanted time away from the pushboat.

two more plates from W&W/AFCO's facility in Van Buren arrived at
the bridge for installation. A sixth plate was shipped out from
a third manufacturing shop on Bond Street.
All of the plates, each weighing in at up to

Smoke On The Water.... A Fire Burns
Out West....
While Trolling The Internet.... We reeled in
a photo showing the hazy sky along the Cape Girardeau riverfront
on Thursday. The haze is caused by the wildfires burning in the
western portion of the United States and Canada.
National Weather Service meteorologist
Derrick Snyder says that visibility has been reduced by the
haze, and that the smoke is usually in the upper atmosphere, but
has been closer to the ground lately....

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois
Mayor Goins: Riverview Repair Funds
Still In Place.........
Alton mayor David Goins reports that the
federal funding for the Riverview Drive repair project is still
in place. He adds that the city had been receiving calls from
concerned citizens alleging that the city had lost the FEMA
funding for the project.
Back in 2019, officials started keeping tabs
on the sidewalk and retaining wall on Riverview Drive near
Riverview Park after cracks developed following heavy rains. A
few months later, part of the bluff collapsed, taking the
retaining wall and sidewalk with it.
Following two years of negotiations, the
Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Illinois Emergency
Management Agency announced that Alton would receive $3,759,186
to help with the project. The federal guidelines require that
the project's design work be created differently........

Mississippi River Near Cahokia Heights,
Illinois
New Lawsuit Filed Over Sewage Flow Into
River........
On Tuesday, residents of Cahokia Heights,
Illinois filed a federal lawsuit against the city for violating
the Clean Water Act by allowing wastewater to continue to flow
into local rivers and creeks.
Filed on behalf of twenty four residents and
the Centerville Citizens for Change, the lawsuit is seeking
compensation for damage caused by flooding and sewage problems
that have been around for decades.
There has been no movement on making repairs
to damaged pump stations which move sewage to treatment plants.
The stormwater drainage ditches are clogged as well, allowing
rainwater to mix with sewage and flow into the ground and
waterways........

Duck Boat News
Captain, 2 Managers Facing 17 Counts Of
Involuntary Manslaughter In 2018 Duck Boat Sinking........
On Friday, July 16, 2021, the Missouri
Attorney General and the Stone County prosecuting attorney
Announced that they were filing criminal charges against 3
employees of Ride the Ducks on Table Rock Lake near Branson,
Missouri, where the vessel sank during a storm in 2018.
The charges stem from the decisions made by
Ride the Ducks employees, who allowed 31 people to board an
excursion boat ahead of a severe storm, which pounded the region
and caused the vessel to sink.
The charges were filed against the captain,
54 year old Captain Kenneth Scott McKee, 38 year old Curtis
Lanham, the general manager of Ride the Ducks Branson and 79
year old Charles V. Baltzell, the operations supervisor that was
the acting manager on duty that night.........

Meramec River Near St. Clair, Missouri
Float The Meramec With Old Cove Canoe &
Kayak........
Floating on the water is probably the best
way to spend a summer's day, and companies like Old Cove Canoe &
Kayak make it easy to spend half a day or all day floating on
the river.
Old Cove Canoe & Kayak offer a variety of
floats for rent, including canoes, kayaks and rafts. Paddlers
have the choice of single or tandem kayaks., Dogs are allowed
on kayaks, but leashes are required. It is recommended that
dogs wear floatation device as well.
If you opt for an all day float, you will
spend about six hours covering about 9.5 miles. Shorter floats
typically last four hours and cover about 4.5 hours........

Hi Bill!
We have the foundation built!!! Unfortunately, since lumber
prices are so high right now we are putting a hold on the
build. Hoping all of this ends soon so we can get back to
it.
