Hello RiverBill,

We are in Gulfport Mississippi. It’s been five years since you and I picked up the Jefferson in Saint Augustine and brought it to this very marina. We picked up this boat four days ago in Lake Charles Louisiana. We are bringing “Miss Augusta” to Augusta Missouri where she will be used for public cruises and private charters. It’s 105 feet long and Coast Guard inspected to carry 150 passengers. We wish you were here!

Asian Carp Update

Over 10 Million Pounds Of Asian Carp Removed From Kentucky, Barkley Lakes........

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency recently reported that commercial fisherman have caught more that 10 million pounds of Asian carp from Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley since 2018.

The commercial anglers are harvesting the carp and being paid via the Asian Carp Harvest Incentive Program administered by the TWRA.  These incentives are paid to the commercial fishermen to catch the carp, and to wholesale fish dealers to process then into fertilizer and pet food.

According to Cole Harty, the Aquatic Nuisance Species Coordinator, commercially harvesting Asian carp is a key strategy to defending  the waters from the effects of the proliferation of the invasive species........

Upper Mississippi River Basin

River Levels Fall To Levels Not Seen In Decades........

On Monday, the City of St. Cloud, Minnesota announced that they would be shutting down the second unit of the hydroelectric dam after water flow fell to only 700 cubic feet per second.  This is the first time the city has completely shut down the dam since 1988;

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reports that as of 6:45 am Tuesday, the Mississippi RIver flow was only 587 cubic feet per second.  To put it into perspective, the Mississippi River was flowing about 4,500 cfs on June 1st.

For the summer months, St. Cloud is 5.59 inches below normal for rainfall.  The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says that they would need between six and eight inches of rain to get out of the drought........

"Do Not Eat" Fish Advisory Lifted From Illinois River........

On Wednesday, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced an updated consumption advisory for sport fish caught in Illinois waters, including the Illinois River   The changes are the result of constant sampling by the Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program.

This year, the IDPH has issued a less-restrictive advisory for 13 bodies of water and removed four bodies of water from the advisory list completely.  For the first time since the 1970's, there is no "Do Not Eat" advisory for the Illinois River because of decreased polychlorinated concentrations.

The continued presence of methylmercury, however, is the cause for additional or more restrictive advisories along Illinois waterways.  The fish consumption advisories are intended to protect the vulnerable parts of the population........

Boating Oddities From Belfast, Maine

Giant Rubber Duck Appeared in A Maine Harbor........

Over the weekend, a 25 foot tall rubber ducky appeared in Belfast Harbor in Belfast, Maine.  It is not known who placed the giant yellow rubber ducky with the word "Joy" printed on it in the harbor.

According to Harbor Master Katherine Given, the 25 foot tall rubber ducky is not posing a danger to navigation, so they are not in any hurry to remove the overgrown bathtub toy.

Given added that everyone loves it, and she has no idea who placed the rubber ducky in the harbor.  She notes that the duck fits right in in Belfast.  People from all over are stopping by the harbor to photograph the rubber ducky........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

Oil Sheen Likely From Illegal Dumping........

Responders are working to skim an oil sheen from the Mississippi River near the Merchant's Bridge.  The sheen covers approximately a 1,000 square foot area.

Investigators are searching for evidence of illegal dumping.  The oil had leaked into the Mississippi River from a blocked sewer.  The blockage caused the oil to drain into the river instead of running through a water treatment plant.

When investigators locate the person responsible for dumping oil into the sewer, they will be billed for restoration costs and may face additional penalties........

Three Rivers Project of Sierra Club Illinois

News Release......

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, August 17, 2021

Contact: Hannah Lee Flath, hannahlee.flath@sierraclub.org, 860-634-0225
Virginia Woulfe-Beile, virginia.woulfe-beile@sierraclub.org, 618-977-2319

Call for Volunteers for 9th Annual Pere Marquette Preservation Project

GRAFTON, IL -- The Sierra Club Illinois’ Three Rivers Project is calling for volunteers for the Fall 2021 Pere Marquette Preservation Project. The Pere Marquette Park Preservation Project, which will take place from October 15 to 17, has been restoring historically significant cabins in the Park’s Upper group camps since 2012. Local carpenters, roofers, and interested volunteers are invited to register for the event by October 1.

Over the years, volunteers have restored enough structures to keep Camp Ouatoga open to the public. This year, the Three Rivers Project will be restoring Unit Lodge #3 of Camp Ouatoga in their ongoing efforts to restore and protect public lands like the Pere Marquette Park Upper Group Camps. If you are a business or organization that is involved in community service projects, this is a great opportunity to make a difference.

“We hope to recruit skilled carpenters and roofers to volunteer their efforts for a work day up in the camp to help us achieve our goal to restore Unit Lodge #3 in Camp Ouatoga in our 2021 Cabin Restoration Campaign,” says event organizer and Sierra Club Illinois’ Three Rivers Project co-coordinator Virginia Woulfe-Beile. “This project is a great way to get involved in the local community while also lending a hand to the Sierra Club’s mission to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet.”

The Joe Page Bridge spanning the Illinois River between Calhoun and Greene Counties has reopened after being damaged in a high speed pursuit on Saturday night.

Seven of the gates on the Joe Page Bridge were damaged when Christopher Raines tried to evade law enforcement authorities.  The Illinois Department of Transportation reported that three primary lighted fiberglass gates and four wooden secondary gates were damaged in the chase.

Luckily, crews were able to make quick repairs as they had the necessary parts on hand.  Kampsville Mayor Wade Gibson says that the Joe Page Bridge is open; thank you to the workers involved........

Body Recovered ........

At around 9 pm Monday evening, a body  was recovered from Creve Coeur Lake following a search effort by multiple agencies that responded to a 911 call about an hour earlier.

Pattonville Fire Protection District Chief Jim Usry reported that a man approximately 36 years old had been aboard an inflatable raft with two other men and a woman when he ended up in the lake.

Missouri River At Washington, Missouri

Responders Rescue Two After Boat Capsized........

Shortly after 4 pm Monday, the Washington Fire Department was called out to the Missouri River for a report of a capsized boat approximately one mile east of the Highway 47 Bridge.

According to Washington Emergency Management Director Mark Skornia, the boat capsized after the two boaters, who were unidentified, forgot to install the vessel's drain plug.

Skornia added that the boaters were rescued from a dike and neither was wearing a life vest when the boat sank.  The pair was returned to the Washington Riverfront around 5 pm.  No injuries were reported.........

Mississippi River Near St. Cloud, Minnesota

St. Cloud Dam Closed Because Of Low River Flows........

Officials at the St. Cloud Hydroelectric Generation Facility shut down production as the flow of the Mississippi River in the region fell below 700 cubic feet per second.

This marks the first closure of the facility since 1988 due to low river flows.  The City of St. Cloud is now asking residents to conserve water.

On Thursday, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources updated the state's drought conditions, which are now at 42 percent of the state in extreme drought conditions, compared to 35 percent of the state just a week ago........

Lake Of The Ozarks

A Look At The 4 Lake Names That Didn't Stick........

The Lake of the Ozarks started out with a bit of an identity crisis, and there was quite a bit of drama surrounding the naming of the lake.  It nearly ended up being named for a politician.

The central Missouri lake was the long-awaited manifestation of a dream by the Union Electric Light and Power Company, and it was referred to, or was nearly called by at least four different names before popular opinion settled on "Ozarks".

The first name was the Osage Reservoir, taking the name of the river that was impounded to create the lake.  Lake Osage became a variant of the name.  In 1929, Missouri State Representative James Logan of Benton County proposed calling the new lake Benton in honor of Missouri's second U.S. Senator, Thomas Hart Benton.  Around 1930, Rep. J.W. Vincent of Camden County proposed naming the lake for Missouri Governor Joseph McClurg, who owned a large store on the Osage River in Linn Creek , which disappeared under the growing lake........

A Look At The Most Common Boating Injuries, How To Avoid Them........

The Lake of the Ozarks is a busy waterway, especially during the peak tourism season which runs from May through September.  During this time, area trauma centers see 27 percent more trauma patients than during the off season.

The most common boating injuries treated during a normal year are lacerations, sprains/strains/contusions, fractures, concussions and compression fractures.

The common causes of these injuries are slips and falls, tubing, compression fractures caused by rough water boating, and injuries cause by propellers and propulsion systems.  Alcohol should also be mentioned, because it is the main contributing factor in fatal boating accidents........

American Waterways

National Waterways Foundation Profiled 17 States........

Earlier this month, the National Waterways Foundation announced that they had commissioned and released waterways profiles for 17 states, including Missouri and Illinois.

The state waterway profiles estimate the economic impact of each state's inland waterway system.  Researchers evaluated current economic and commodity flow information, inland waterways and waterways-dependant industries, the top commodities, as well as the industries that benefit most from the inland waterways.

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer

New Yamaha Prop Plant Running At Full Capacity........

In July, the new Yamaha Marine Precision Propeller facility in Greenfield, Indiana reached full production capacity.  The state of the art casting facility and foundry uses advanced robotics to significantly lower lead times and increase production by over 67 percent.  The facility can produce over 100,000 propellers annually.

Yamaha purchased Precision Propellers, Inc. in 2008, and they are the only manufacturer of stainless steel propellers for Yamaha outboards in the United States.  Ground was broken for the 55,000 square foot Greenfield facility in July of 2019.  Yamaha intends to expand the YPPI campus in the future.

As a foundry owned by the Yamaha, YPPI is in the unique position to rapidly meet changes in market demand, while other manufacturers that rely on outside sources are currently dealing with lead times that have doubled or tripled........

Benefit for Amy and Aaron Adams

Grafton Oyster Bar.......

Grafton Oyster Bar
As the owner of Grafton Oyster Bar I type this post with a very heavy heart as our Oyster Bar family is hurting and praying for very special people in our lives.
Amy Adams, a former employee of ours and the wife of Aaron Adams is in the fight of her life. Aaron is a bartender/manager for us and has been with us since the day we opened the doors in Grafton. Amy and Aaron have 3 children with youngest being 2 years of age.
Amy was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast cancer in April of 2020. With her faith and hundreds of prayers behind her she beat this ugly disease and was in full remission.
On June 10th of this year while at work she experienced a severe seizure. After multiple tests she learned she now has 13 lesions on her brain and her cancer has been diagnosed as terminal.
Although her prognosis is terminal, Amy and her family are fighting and are determined to once again beat this cancer. Amy is currently undergoing full brain radiation. Our family knows she has so much more life to live and we know she can do this!
We are having a benefit for Amy and Aaron September 30th, 2021 at Grafton Oyster Bar and Grafton Harbor Marina from 1pm til 11pm. The Oyster Bar will be open for regular business all day with all profit being donated to the fundraiser. Our kitchen will close at 3pm. We will then be offering a BBQ pork steak & Fried chicken dinner to anyone who wants to eat to support the cause. Again all profits will be donated. In addition there will be 50/50, 70inch Visio TV raffle and a live auction.
We will have live music all afternoon to include Ledsled and Outlaw Opry whom have graciously donated their time.
As a business owner I receive 25-30 requests a week for donations to support all kinds of causes and we do our absolute best to support everything we can. We never ask for anything in return. BUT, I am cashing that in right now for this beautiful family.
If you own a business and can donate a gift card to this cause it will be so much appreciated. If you no not and have something else to donate for the auction such as Sports tickets, etc. that would be much appreciated as well. There is a go fund me page for Amy Adams as well if you cannot attend or would like to make a cash donation.
All donations can be mailed or dropped of at Grafton Oyster Bar, 215 West Water Street, Grafton, IL 62037.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and support. We hope to see you September 30th!

Mississippi River - Day 64

The last day of my Source to Sea trip is Saturday, July 31, 2021. I am shaken awake by my daughter at 4:45 am. Carol’s alarm is going off and neither Carol or I hear it. We both get up, even though my alarm isn’t set to go off for another 15 minutes. Carol quickly dresses and goes down to start the car. I slowly straggle along a few minutes later dressed in my paddling clothes....

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Several Events Coming Up At The National Great Rivers Museum........

Allison Rhanor with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently discussed what is going on this weekend at the National Great Rivers Museum, including a new exhibit from the Missouri History Museum.

The exhibit, Mighty Mississippi was up at the Missouri History Museum during the duration of the COVID-19 outbreak.  The exhibit was taken down in June, and some of the features will be on display at the National Great Rivers Museum.

The other portion of the display will look at the endangered lake sturgeon, who only had one known spawning location in 2015, and that was at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam.  Researchers are studying why this occurred, and those efforts will be highlighted as well........

Riverfront Governance Plan May Include Historical Elements.........

On Tuesday, a draft governance plan for the Quincy Riverfront was presented that may be looking to include historic preservation into revitalization efforts along the river.

A month ago, the Quincy Riverfront Master Plan Steering Committee had agreed to establish a subcommittee with the task of evaluating governance structures for  future riverfront development.

The Sternwheeler Piasa .......

The sternwheeler Piasa was constructed in 1899 in Mobile, Alabama and was originally christened the Mary S. Blees.  The vessel was built on a wooden hull that was 170 feet in length, 34 feet wide and a depth of 4.6 feet.  The engines featured 16 inch cylinders with a 7 foot stroke.

The Mary S. Blees  operated on the Mobile-Tombigbee River trade broker until John Klein moved her to New Orleans, where it ran the Baton Rouge in the fall of 1914.

In June of 1915, William Ruprecht of St. Louis purchased the vessel, made a few modifications to the vessel and operated between St. Louis and Beardstown to compete with the Eagle Packet Company.

A few years later, the Eagle Packet Company decided to acquire an auxiliary boat and eliminate the competition by purchasing the vessel and renamed it the Piasa in honor of the Indian tribe........

We have ordered our steel (for the) building and they are in the process of making it. They said it usually takes about 3 months to have it built and delivered. Let’s pray everything goes smoothly and there are no setbacks

Hi Bill!
We have the foundation built!!! Unfortunately, since lumber prices are so high right now we are putting a hold on the build. Hoping all of this ends soon so we can get back to it.

"The plan is to keep it in the same location, maybe a little closer to the river and up about 7 ft higher. The building will be just a little smaller with a bigger deck."
