Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana

Hurricane Ida Causes Mississippi River Flow To Reverse........

On Sunday, Hurricane Ida came ashore as a Category 4 storm, cutting power to all of New Orleans, Louisiana, taking roofs off of buildings and causing the Mississippi River to reverse it's flow.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Gabriel Wisdom says that they have received over a dozen barges breaking free.  In Lafitte, approximately 35 miles south of New Orleans, a barge came loose and struck a bridge.

According to Ricky Boyette, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, officials detected a "negative flow" along the Mississippi River because of the storm surge........

The Alton Amphitheater Hosted The Food Truck Festival Last Saturday.......

On Saturday, the Food Truck Festival returned to the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater along the Mississippi River following a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Two dozen food trucks signed on to participate in the event.  This year saw a welcome addition, with beverage stations now offering craft beers.  While crowds were smaller than in years past, plenty of people braved the heat and humidity to sample the truck's fares........

Boaters Dealing With Low Water Conditions........

As of the end of last month, officials report that an unprecedented 90 to 100 percent of the Western United States has been enduring a record-setting drought.  These drought conditions are being felt in other parts of the nation as well.

Access to the water has been hampered by the low water conditions at lakes in Utah, New Mexico, California, Minnesota and Illinois to name a few.  This makes it impossible for officials to maintain normal water access.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez says that water levels are very low in some areas, making navigation difficult for even the smallest of vessels.........

RBFF Wraps Up 2021 Registration Reactivation Program........

The Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation recently wrapped up their 2021 Boat Registration Reactivation Program.  This year, they mailed out more than 436,000 letters to lapsed boat registrants.  The letters average a 10.11 percent response rate across 17 states.

The program, now in it's tenth year, has re-registered 39,278 vessels via direct mail outreach, grossing $1,492,754.90 in registration fees for the 17 states.

Frank Peterson, president and CEO of RBFF says that following the huge gains in boating participation and ownership last year, it was crucial to work with state officials to encourage Americans to get back out on the water........

A Look Back At A Presidential Visit To The Riverfront........

Thousands of St. Louis residents headed to the riverfront on August 24, 1979 to greet the Delta Queen riverboat.  The crowd of about 15,000 came out to welcome not only the riverboat, but President Jimmy Carter, the First Lady and their young daughter, Amy.

The First family was completing a trip down the Mississippi River to garner support for a variety of policy initiatives.  A young Senator John Danforth was aboard the Delta Queen as well.......

River History....

August 28, 2016 in River History

The Historic Riverboat Preservation Association announced:

The Goldenrod has been handed over to us free and clear of all legal issues, all debts are clear and we are in good standing with the land owners. With that being said, yes we realize the boat is unable to be repaired. Here is a rough draft of our plan; Finish taking apart the Goldenrod piece by piece while taking measurements and drawings of everything. We have been talking to prospective places in St. Louis to do a reconstruction of the showboat using original wood on land with water around it to make it look how its supposed to. Yes, we are crazy and its a long shot, but its one we are all willing to take.

Note: The boat had been scheduled for the scrap yard on April1, 2016.

Container On Barge Shipping Service........

The Missouri Department of Transportation recently was awarded one of six Marine Highway Project designations from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration as part of America's Marine Highway Program.

During the subcommittee's last meeting, they were given an 89 acre governance region and conferred about potentially with expanding into the downtown area to include more historic properties. Klingner & Associates returned with four new maps, some larger, some smaller than the original design.

The subcommittee decided to keep the original boundaries.  According to Rick Ehehart the city representative to the subcommittee, the title of the project is the Riverfront Master Plan, and they will be lucky to accomplish that........

Missouri River At Maryland Heights, Missouri

Howard Bend Levee District Has Plan That May Encourage Development........

The Howard Bend Levee District is planning on constructing millions of dollars worth of new stormwater infrastructure and hoping that will attract new development to offset the district's financial shortfalls.

This plan may have eased the concerns of many of the levee district's critics that received unexpectedly high bills last year.  The sudden hike was to cover the difference in revenue that had been withheld during a dispute with Hollywood Casino.

If the new pumping station is constructed, it may lead to considerable development of the Howard Bend area of the Missouri River floodplain, where the levee, the Page extension (Highway 364) and Highway 141 extension were supposed to have spawned a buildup years ago........

Mississippi River Journeys

The Spirit Of Peoria Offers Nostalgic River Journey........

On Tuesday, the Spirit of Peoria riverboat stopped in along the St. Louis riverfront before heading back up to Grafton, Illinois.  The archetypal riverboat is a nod to the bygone era when steamers plied the rivers, carrying not only passengers, but goods as well.

The Spirit of Peoria takes one back to the Gilded Age with it's appearance, decor, ambiance and music.  Barry Cloyd entertains passengers with a guitar and banjo, while Ted Lemen lends his voice and piano styling.  Brian "Fox" Ellis is on hand as a storyteller.

Upon arriving at Grafton, the Spirit of Peoria docked for the night at Grafton's The Loading Dock Restaurant, all while the vessel's calliope was belting out a catchy tune........

Missouri River Near New Haven, Missouri

Paddleboard Maker Adding Microbrewery To His Shop........

After Shane Camden built stand-up paddleboards for himself and his wife, he quit working for a homebuilder and started making paddleboards, surfboards and wakeboards out of his basement under the name Timber Longboard Co.

He eventually found his niche making unique boards for the river =racing community, so he quit making surfboards and focused on the paddleboards.  In 2018, he quit his day job and dove into the paddleboard business full time.

Camden established PaddleStop New Haven in the town of New Haven along the Missouri River near Washington.  He offers canoe and paddleboard rentals, shuttles and guided tours along the Missouri River.

In November, Camden and two partners will be launching the PaddleStop Brewery in the back half of the New Haven building.  They intend to offer up top eight craft beers at a time with food from the neighboring meat smoker and deli, Lang-A-Tang........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer

Candela Introduces High Power Electric Boat Motors........

Candela, a Swedish electric boat manufacturer, recently introduced their new electric drive unit for their premium electric boats.  Called the C-Pod, the company claims that they are the most efficient and longest lasting boat motors ever offered.

The C-Pod is made up from two electric motors, each driving a counter-rotating propeller to produce a combined power output of 67 horsepower per pod.  This power level is created by a compact torpedo-shaped design that weighs in at only 110 pounds.

The C-Pod has been designed to have a nearly _unlimited lifetime", due to the unit's long maintenance interval of 3,000 hours.  THere are no oil changes or other major upkeep required........

News Release

EMPHASIS: 2021 Lake Of The Ozarks Shootout Boat Race

Captain Corey J. Schoeneberg, commanding officer of Troop F, would like to inform boaters of an offshore boat race event. The race will take place on Saturday, August 28, 2021, through Sunday August 29, 2021, from approximately the 33-mile mark to the 35-mile mark at Lake of the Ozarks. Powerboat racing will begin at 10 a.m. each morning. Boating traffic in the area will be restricted to no wake and idle speed beginning at 9 a.m. on each day from the 31.5-mile mark to the 36-mile mark. The no wake and idle speed restriction will be extended on SATURDAY ONLY, down to the 21-mile mark from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Sunday, the no wake and idle speed restriction will be in place approximately one hour after the last race.

Every attempt will be made to minimize inconvenience to boaters navigating near the race, but boaters should expect congestion in the area. Troopers, as well as event volunteers, will be located around the course and will assist boaters in locating the designated areas for spectator anchoring. Spectators wishing to anchor should anticipate needing enough anchor line for water depth in excess of 100 feet.

Captain Schoeneberg urges boaters to use heightened caution while exiting the area following the event due to conditions caused by the heavy boat traffic and to report ALL impaired operators to Troop F at 573-751-1000 or by dialing *55 on a cellular phone. A map of the Shootout Boat Race can be found at the following link: 2021 Shootout Boat Race Map.

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!! Follow Troop F on Twitter for the most current news @MSHPTrooperF.

Call for Volunteers for 15th Annual Mississippi Earthtones Festival
Lend your time and talents to the annual celebration of our river

ALTON, IL -- The Sierra Club Illinois’ Three Rivers Project and Alton Main Street are calling for volunteers to support the 15th annual Mississippi Earthtones Festival. The festival, which will be held from 12:00 to 10:00 PM on Saturday, September 18, brings together thousands of community members in celebration of the Mississippi River through art, music, and conservation. The event is free, family-oriented, and open to the public -- made possible by hundreds of wonderful volunteers! Interested community members can sign up to volunteer an hour or two of their time at the event.

Volunteer support is needed for a variety of festival tasks, including but not limited to: staffing the information booth, managing the stage and supporting various musical acts, and directing festival-goers to proper recycling stations. All volunteers will receive snacks and a free t-shirt. To learn more about volunteering at the Mississippi Earthtones Festival or to sign up for a shift, visit https://sc.org/MEF21volunteer. More information about the Mississippi Earthtones Festival can be found at www.facebook.com/EarthtonesFestival.

“Each year, we rely on hundreds of wonderful volunteers that give their time in planning, setting up, supporting, and cleaning up the festival,” says Sara McGibany, event co-organizer and Executive Director of Alton Main Street. “Volunteers are needed for both the festival itself and the Mississippi River clean-up the following weekend on September 25, so stay tuned for more information on the latter if you’re interested in cleaning up our wonderful river! The Mississippi Earthtones Festival brings out the best of our community and couldn’t happen without the support of our volunteers.”

Tennessee River Near Grand Rivers, Kentucky

Construction Work Has Started On New, Larger Lock........

Construction work has begun on a new, modernized 1,200 foot lock that will work in conjunction with the existing 600 foot lock at the Kentucky Lake Dam along the Tennessee River.

The project had officially started back in 1996, however, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report that it was under funded until 2016.  Since that time, work has been steadily progressing on the project.

Deb Calhoun, senior vice president of the Waterways Council says that the towing industry, the local commercial tow operators and the shippers moving commodities will benefit greatly from the larger lock chamber........

Genetic Research Should Help Lake Trout Population........

On Tuesday, officials announced that scientists have traced the genetic makeup of the lake trout which should help the efforts to rebuild populations of the fish in the Great Lakes and other North American waters.

U.S. and Canadian researchers have put together a reference genome, or digital genetic map, of the lake trout.  The map will help explain the characteristics that allowed the species to evolve and spread across a wide variety of locations, with some types better adapted for certain locations and depths.

Marc Gaden, spokesman for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, says that the data will provide managers of programs that stock lakes with young trout to bolster natural reproduction with vital information........

Hi Bill!
We have the foundation built!!! Unfortunately, since lumber prices are so high right now we are putting a hold on the build. Hoping all of this ends soon so we can get back to it.

"The plan is to keep it in the same location, maybe a little closer to the river and up about 7 ft higher. The building will be just a little smaller with a bigger deck."

Fishing in the Florida Keys

From Wiki:

The name Islamorada came from early Spanish explorers in the area. It translates to "purple island" in Spanish.

Islamorada was the location of one of the stations of the Overseas Railroad.

Islamorada was hit almost directly by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, causing 423 deaths.[4] A memorial, including the ashes of over 300 victims, exists today at Overseas Highway mile marker 82.[5]

Hall of Fame baseball player Ted Williams began visiting Islamorada in 1943 and for the next 45 years was the island's most well-known resident[vague].[6] After his retirement from baseball he became the national spokesman for Sears sporting goods, and became renowned for his abilities as a fisherman. Over the decades, he hosted numerous celebrities at his Islamorada house and took them on local fishing trips.

The village was incorporated on November 4, 1997. Prior to this date, "Islamorada" referred to the evolving community island of Upper Matecumbe Key.

At the 2010 census, the village had a total population of 6,119.... click here for more info and map

Yesterday's Pictures of the Day in 2005....  were from Steve Schulte...

The 2005 Jamaica Daze Party took place on the upper sandbar behind the Isle of Two Branch last Saturday. Once again our good friend, Steve Schulte, took these great pictures from one of the helicopters that were flying around in the late afternoon.

Steve also sent us a close up picture of some of the boats and a beach shot at dinner time of the food table and palm trees.  I am also including a picture that shows some of the surrounding scenery.

THANKS STEVE !!

Mississippi River At Dorena, Missouri

A Trip On The Dorena-Hickman Ferry Is A Trip Back In Time........

In many ways, a trip across the Mississippi River aboard the Dorena-Hickman Ferry is a trip back in time.  The ferry has been running off and on for close to 180 years.

Former ferry owner High Lattus says that the Dorena-Hickman Ferry was founded in 1840, and grew along with the surrounding community.  The town of Hickman was originally founded in 1819 as Mills Point.  The town's name was changed to Hickman in 1837, making it the largest and second oldest city along the Mississippi River in Kentucky.  Mark Twain stated that Hickman was a pretty town perched on a handsome hill.

By the early 20th century, the Dorena-Hickman Ferry business was booming.  Reportedly, the roads in Missouri were primitive back then, and the roads in Kentucky were better established.  In order to get their crops to market, Missouri farmers had to get them, across the Mississippi River and the only way to do that was the Dorena-Hickman Ferry........

St. Charles Campaigning To Bring Controversial Statue To The Riverfront........

The push is on to bring a controversial statue of Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea to the St. Charles Riverfront.  The statue had been removed from Charlottesville, Virginia after Sacagawea descendants claimed that the 1919 statue depicted the guide in a subservient role.

St. Charles Mayor Dan Borgmeyer says that the statue does feature Sacagawea at the feet of Lewis and Clark, but it is because she was a tracker and guide.

Borgmeyer added that there is another Sacagawea descendant living in the St. Charles area that is in favor of bringing the statue to the St. Charles Riverfront.  The City and Mayor have set up a GoFundMe campaign for the cause........

Mississippi River At Kimmswick, Missouri

Another Riverboat ........

Local officials and town merchants are hopeful that riverboats can help put the tiny Jefferson County town of Kimmswick, Missouri back on the map.  On Friday morning, the riverboat American Countess docked there.

Around 90 passengers got off the boat and onto busses headed into town.  The busses transported passengers to the Burgess-How House, as well as other historical sites, stores and restaurants..

The riverboat visits have been made possible by the new $1.3 million dock that is outfitted with bollards which help secure the riverboats into place. Neil Breitweiser, the executive director of the Jefferson County Port Authority says that the bollards are piled into bedrock and filled with concrete, making them strong enough to hold the American Queen, the largest known riverboat in the nation.........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release

August 20, 2021
EMPHASIS: Include Safety In Your Plans For Labor Day Weekend

Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, encourages everyone to plan for a safe 2021 Labor Day weekend. Whether you are on the water or on the road, it’s everyone's responsibility to travel safely and observe all Missouri laws.
As you plan your Labor Day weekend, incorporate safety into every facet:
· choosing your route,
· making sure your equipment is in good working condition,
· being aware of and following Missouri's traffic and boating laws,
· driving your vehicle or vessel courteously, and
· wearing a seat belt or a life jacket.

Help ensure a safer Labor Day weekend for everyone.

In Missouri, 18 people died and 463 were injured in 1,041 traffic crashes over the 2020 Labor Day holiday. This means one person was killed or injured every 9.7 minutes. Troopers arrested 146 people for driving while intoxicated during last year’s holiday weekend.

The Labor Day holiday is also a busy boating weekend. In 2020, there were 20 boating crashes which included one fatality and six injuries. There were no drownings over last year's Labor Day holiday. Troopers arrested seven people for boating while intoxicated during last year's counting period.

The 2021 counting period for the Labor Day holiday will be from 6 p.m., Friday, September 3, 2021, through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 6, 2021.

The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness & Reduction Effort) over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Speed, inattention, and impaired driving are leading causes of traffic crashes. All available troopers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways and waterways. Troopers on the roadways will be enforcing Missouri’s speed limit, seat belt, and impaired driving laws, in addition to being available to assist motorists.

Marine enforcement troopers will be working to make our waterways safer during the holiday weekend. Missouri’s boaters are asked to do their part by remaining alert for other boats and swimmers and being courteous on the water. With more boats on the water, it is even more important to pay attention when operating a vessel. Remember: Smaller vessels should yield right-of-way to larger vessels. Boaters should avoid overloading their boat with too many passengers and always pay close attention to the boats around them. Causing harm to another person or their property with an excessive boat wake may subject you to enforcement action or civil liability. Treat other boaters and property owners as you want to be treated. Life jackets save lives. Wear one when you are on or around water.

Never operate a vehicle or vessel while you are impaired. Alcohol consumption slows reaction time.

The public is encouraged to call the Patrol's Emergency Report Line (800) 525-5555 or *55 on your cellular phone if they witness criminal activity or experience an emergency. These emergency numbers are operational for both highway and water emergencies. If your celebration includes alcohol, designate someone else to drive whether you are in your boat or your car. Please don't become a statistic.

Too many people die in traffic crashes each year in Missouri. The choices you make when you’re behind the wheel matter. Make good choices, so you’ll never have to say, “If I could just go back …”

Fireworks Shows Thursday Nights

Pool 26 of the Mississippi River at Alton and Grafton

Some Highlights:

Thursday night from June 3 to Sept. 9 with the exception of Thursday, July 1.

The dazzling light show in Alton will launch from the parking lot at Landmarks and Henry Streets on the city’s riverfront. The Grafton show will launch from Grafton Lighthouse Park.

The Grafton Ferry has added Thursday to its schedule to help encourage people to enjoy the Grafton fireworks. A farmers market will take place in Grafton on Thursdays and the Grafton Music in the Park concert series also takes place Thursday evenings. Both of those events precede the fireworks shows

We have ordered our steel (for the) building and they are in the process of making it. They said it usually takes about 3 months to have it built and delivered. Let’s pray everything goes smoothly and there are no setbacks

Hi Bill!
We have the foundation built!!! Unfortunately, since lumber prices are so high right now we are putting a hold on the build. Hoping all of this ends soon so we can get back to it.

Foundation work started

"The plan is to keep it in the same location, maybe a little closer to the river and up about 7 ft higher. The building will be just a little smaller with a bigger deck."
