The Miss Augusta Set To Debut Sunday........

As part of the Hoffman Family of Companies plans for building a $125 million wine and tourism destination in the Augusta, Missouri region, a new luxury yacht, the Miss Augusta, will be making it's debut Sunday.  The vessel may be cruising along the Missouri River on public trips by November.

The Miss Augusta is a 105 foot long Skipperliner yacht which will be based out of Klondike Park in Augusta, where the company is constructing a dock.  The vessel features three decks, dining and two bars and will offer public and private cruises.

According to Jenny Gazella, who heads up the company's cruise operations in Naples, Florida, the cruises will begin in St. Charles in November, and when the dock is complete in the spring, the Miss Augusta will move her base to Augusta.........

USS Inaugural Exposed By Low River Levels........

The low level of the Mississippi River at St. Louis has exposed the wreck of the World War II-era USS Inaugural.  The minesweeper was moored at the foot of the Gateway Arch until she broke free during the Great Flood of 1993.

The Inaugural broke free on August 1, 1993 as the Mississippi River rose to it's historic crest of 49.58 feet   The vessel briefly drifted downstream before eventually capsizing and sinking south of the Poplar Street Bridge.

The National Parks Service said that plans for salvaging the wreck in one piece and restoring it were not feasible and the vessel has been declared a total loss.  The NPS had stated that the Inaugural  will be salvaged for scrap and museum purposes, but that has yet to happen........

IMMS Discussed Effects Of Proposed Mississippi River Diversion Project........

Last week, Dr. Moby Solangi, the director of the Institute of Marine Mammal Studies was in Jackson, Mississippi to discuss the proposed id-Breton Sound diversion along the Mississippi and Louisiana state line, and the expected effects it would have on the ecosystem of the Gulf Coast.

Dr. Solangi says that when the Bonnet Carre Spillway was opened in 2019 for 123 days, it caused vast amounts of damage to the marine life in the Mississippi Sound and the Gulf Coast tourism industry.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is proposing additional Mississippi River diversions, including the Mid-Breton Sediment diversion.  Dr. Solangi cautions that opening up another diversion that mixes huge amounts of freshwater into salt water habitats, even for a short period of time, could cause damage for years to come........

NMMA Highlights Marine Priorities In Infrastructure Bill........

In the next few weeks, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which was recently passed by the U.S. Senate.

THe National Marine Manufacturers Association's latest Marine Minute discusses the priorities for the recreational boating industry included in the legislation, as well as the broader outdoor recreational industry at large.

Once signed into law, the legislation will provide a historic investment in the nation's infrastructure, including roads, waterways, bridges, and would greatly benefit the recreational boating industry........

Arkansas River Near Barling, Arkansas

Simulator Allows Barge Captain Input On New Bridge Construction.........

Earlier this month, the Seamen's Church Institute conducted a feasibility study for a new bridge to be constructed over the Arkansas RIver near Barling, Arkansas.

The study, which was conducted at SCI's Center for Maritime Education in Paducah, Kentucky was designed for barge captains to help with optimal pier placement, taking into consideration the safety of those navigating below the span and the economy of the taxpayers funding the span.

The feasibility study put tow boat captains in a simulator where they piloted a tow beneath a "new" Interstate 49 bridge.  The captain then answers a series of online questions prior to being given the next of 80 possible navigational scenarios........

Mississippi River At The Chain Of Rocks

Sea Tow Crew Arrives To Free Boat Stranded On The Chain Of Rocks........

A crew from Sea Tow in Pensacola, Florida has arrived in the St. Louis region to recover a 44 foot boat, the White Widower, that has been stuck on the Chain of Rocks along the Mississippi River north of St. Louis since October 5th.  The team is hoping to lift the vessel off of the rocks and tow it upstream Wednesday.

Firefighters had responded to the vessel and rescued two people from it earlier this month.  A tow company had dispatched three boats to attempt a recovery of the sailboat, but they determined that a barge would be necessary to safely recover it.

It that section of the Mississippi River, there is a channel that allows boat traffic to avoid the Chain of Rocks.  The sailboat mistakenly traveled down the river's main channel, becoming lodged on the dam........

Update:  White Widower Has Become A Bit Of A Tourist Attraction........

As Sea Tow crews assess how to recover the 44 foot sailboat, the White Widower, the vessel and the efforts to recover it has drawn some spectators to the Chain of Rocks section of the Mississippi River.

The spectators included curious onlookers, drivers, and even the anglers along the nearby river banks.  Several people had been out to the scene several times over the past two weeks to check on the progress of the recovery efforts.

Reportedly, the captain of the recovery vessel had seen something he didn't like so there will have to be more planning before the vessel can be safely removed.........

Great Rivers Greenway Plans Park North Of The Arch........

Great Rivers Greenway has announced that they are purchasing a derelict parking garage located north of the Gateway Arch Grounds, with the intention of demolishing the structure and replacing it with a park.

The garage, located on Laclede's Landing, had previously been inundated by floodwaters and had been forced to close over two years ago.

Great Rivers Greenway intends to tear down the garage as soon as possible, however, they are still looking to secure the necessary funds needed to create the park........

Mississippi River Management

Mississippi River Wetlands Projects Promoted To Fight Flooding........

Back in March, Ducks Unlimited and the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative signed a memorandum of understanding and on September 14th the groups held a joint press conference to discuss the results of that partnership.

Ducks Unlimited researchers Dr. Ellen Herbert and Michael Sertle put together a PowerPoint presentation that highlighted 65 wetlands sites identified by the team.  The project identifies some 60,000 acres of flood storage across the 65 sites.

The MRCTI, which consists of the mayors of over 100 cities and towns along the Mississippi River, has developed a collaborative, whole system approach to fighting floods.  Instead of building levees higher, develop wetlands and other areas adjacent to the river to be open to floodwaters, reducing the severity of flooding downstream........

Former Grafton Rendezvous Relocated To Hardin........

The Piasa Free Trappers Rendezvous - where pre-1840 history comes to life, formerly known as the Grafton Rendezvous, was relocated to the banks of the Illinois RIver, 22 miles upstream in Hardin.

Cancelled last year due to COVID-19 closures, the weekend event still drew in dozens of re-enactors in period clothing who demonstrated what life was like when Illinois was still referred to as the frontier.

A traditional rendezvous was held in the 1700s and 1800s, and was a time for trappers to bring in their furs to sell to buyers such as the St. Louis Bay Company and the Hudson Bay Company.  The trappers would then restock their provisions prior to heading out for another year of trapping........

Biologists To Investigate Alligator Gar Caught In The Neosho River........

Last month, Kansas angler Danny Lee "Butch" Smith reeled in a prehistoric fish, an alligator gar, while fishing along the Neosho River.  This marks the first time an alligator gar has been documented in Kansas.  Smith says that he was shocked to find out what was on the end of his line.

Biologists say that the nearly 40 pound, 4.5 foot alligator gar is a living fossil, that can be traced back close to 100 million years, however, it is not native to Kansas waters.  Connor Ossowski, a biologist with the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks Fisheries says that the longnose, shortnose and spotted gar are native to Kansas, so how an alligator gar arrived in Kansas is a mystery.

The biologists met with Smith to take samples from the fish for study.  They extracted otoliths, the fish's inner ear bone, which lays growth rings.  Researchers can determine the age of the fish and using a new technology called microchemistry, they can study the unique water chemistry left in the growth rings to determine where the fish has been........

      River History....

October 18, 1847 in River History........

Boatmen’s Bank, the oldest bank west of the Mississippi River, was established on this day in 1847.

The founder, George Knight Budd, arrived in St. Louis by the river aboard a steamer in 1835. After seeing the thriving commerce on Mississippi riverfront, he decided to settle in St. Louis !

In 1850 the river was the source of a disaster that spared the bank. Not a flood ! A fire that aboard a steamer on the St. Louis riverfront started a blaze that destroyed much of the city. The fire took more than 400 buildings and 23 steamers, but it spared the Boatmen's building ! It was left standing in the middle of the ashes of the structures around it.

Captains Paint Stack Logos Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness........

Captain Robert Tillson had an idea for supporting his cousin Andrea's breast cancer battle by painting the red Hines Furlong stack logo on the M/V Donna H. Furlong pink for October's National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Tillson's idea has spread to approximately one third of the Hines Furlong fleet.  Captain Kurt Doss of the M/V Glenn A Hendon says after Tillson sent him a photo of his painted stack logo, he sent a crewmember to the store for some pink paint.

Hines Furlong President and CEO Kent Furlong has gone beyond the initial support of Tillman's efforts.  Port Captain Reggie Tubbs said that a company email went out stating that the company would supply pink paint for any captain that wanted pink logos in October........

Meramec River Near Eureka, Missouri

Former Route 66 Bridge Near Eureka Moving Closer To Reopening.........

A bridge that once carried Route 66 over the Meramec River near Eureka, Missouri may be reopened in time for the 100th anniversary of America's iconic "Mother Road" in 2026.

The bridge restoration project at the Route 66 State park is still $3 million shy of being fully funded and officials are hoping to raise the necessary funds in the coming year, or as an alternative, acquire federal stimulus money for the project, which would transform the span into a 20 foot wide bicycle and pedestrian pathway.

The span was constructed in 1932 at a cost of $133,593.  While other structures had spanned the Meramec River, the Route 66 bridge was the first designed to support cars.  The 30 foot wide, 1,008 foot long span was closed to traffic in October 2009, and the road bed removed to take weight off of the structure while it's future was determined........

Recreational Marine Industry

NMMA Says Marine CO. CEOs Report Strong 2nd Quarter Business.........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association recently released their Marine CEO Sentiment Report for the second quarter of 2021.  The quarterly survey examines the state and needs of the U.S. recreational boat, engine and marine accessory manufacturing businesses.

The report states that the marine CEO assessments of the overall business climate were positive throughout the second quarter of 2021, following a very chaotic 2020.  The report showed increases in sales and orders compared tot he second quarter of 2020, as well as high capacity utilization.

Other highlights of the survey include:

 ○  95% of marine CEOs reported business conditions were expanding or stable in Q2 2021.
○  55% of marine CEOs expect business conditions to improve substantially or slightly over the next six months.
○  66% of marine manufacturers reported modest or substantial hiring activity in Q2 2021.
○  Countering this optimism, significant supply chain disruptions affected 88% of marine businesses, with considerably slower deliveries impacting more  than half of all respondents.

Mississippi River Near New Madrid, Missouri

A Look At Why The Mississippi River Flowed Backwards........

When people in the United States think of earthquakes, typically, the west coast comes to mind.  There are plenty earthquakes that occur in the central and eastern portions of the United States as well.

Until a sizable increase in seismic activity in Oklahoma occurred in 2014, the New Madrid seismic zone in the Mississippi River Valley was the most seismically active region east of the Rocky Mountains.

A series of three large earthquakes occurred between December 1811 and February 1812, with thousands of aftershocks that could be felt up to 190 miles away in Louisville, Kentucky.

Following the February 7th quake, the Mississippi River was reported to have flowed backwards for a period of time, inundating an Indian village, destroying thousands of acres of forest land and creating two temporary waterfalls........

The S.S. Admiral

A Look Back At The History Of The Admiral's Calliope........

The late Captain Bill Streckfus passed away on July 14th at the age of 88.  He was particularly interested in maintaining the 32 note Nichol calliope that was installed atop of the S.S. Admiral.

The origins of the calliope has been debated, but a St. Louis Post Dispatch interview from 1964 of the father and son duo of Captains Roy and Bill should offer enough information to settle the debate.

Captain Roy Streckfus, who grew up hearing the calliope music from several of the boats owned by his family stated that the Admiral's calliope came off of their old steamer, the Capitol, which operated in the excursion trade between St. Paul and New Orleans.

Captain Roy added that the calliope was the main way of announcing that the riverboat was coming to town.  They would start the show with Happy Days Are Here Again to draw people to the riverfront........

Illinois Flooding Opinions

Proposed Legislation Would Make Illinois More Resistant To Floods........

The recent destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Ida combined with the flood and severe weather ever events that occurred across Illinois this year serve as stark reminders that communities need to be more proactive in planning, responding and constructing in the future.

These recent events are why it is important that the U.S. Senate took action to reduce the economic and recovery effects of flooding with the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

The legislation males a historic commitment to improve the nation's infrastructure resistance to flooding while supporting state and community level programs intended to improve flood mitigation.........

An Angler Reeled In A Very Unique Catfish........

Monday evening, a man was fishing along the Missouri banks of the Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois when he reeled in a rather rare Piebald Blue Catfish and released it for someone else to catch.

Piebalds look like ordinary blue catfish, however, their white skin is marbled with prominent gray splotches.  Their markings put them at a disadvantage in the wild because they are easier for predators to spot.

If you are wondering how unique the Piebald Blue Catfish are, the Lower Mississippi Conservation Committee catches tens of thousands of ordinary catfish each year.  In 2014, they caught two Piebalds........

Virginia Woulfe-Beile of the Sierra Club says that they have accomplished a considerable amount over the years, however, there is plenty left to address.  She adds that some of the cabins are beyond repair, and if they hadn't started the restoration project, many more would be condemned.

A good number of these cabins have been around for than eight decades, as they were the result of a work stimulus program instituted during the Great Depression backed by the Civilian Conservation Corps........

Lower Mississippi River

Dredging The River Could Reveal $461 Million........

An estimated $461 million dollars lies buried under the sand and muck lining the bed of the Lower Mississippi River, and currently, there is a massive effort underway to dig that money up.

Crews are working to dredge the final 250 mile stretch of the Mississippi River channel to a depth of 50 feet. The project will allow barges to carry more commodities at a minimal increase of shipping costs.

The Mississippi River Ship Channel Dredging Project began in 2020 and is slated to be completed by 2022.  The project will cost around $270 million, but is expected to return $7.20 for every $1 spent........

Fishy Tales From St. Louis, Missouri

A Look At Missouri's One and Only Shark Attack........

One would think that people living in the Midwest would never be attacked by sharks, however, Missouri happens to be a landlocked state that has had one such recorded event.

According to The Shark Attack File, Kathi and Marco Peters were performing at the St. Louis Boat and Sports Show in 1996 near a 9,000 gallon tank containing six nurse sharks, which are slow moving bottom dwellers and are typically harmless to humans.

Kathi inadvertently placed her hand in the bottom of the tank, and one of the sharks named Bob must have thought her hand looked like a fish, giving her a bite.  She suffered five puncture wounds to the hand........

Fall Colors Predictions......Missouri Department of Conservation foresters update "Fall Color" reports weekly from mid-September through early-November.

The peak of fall color in Missouri is usually around mid-October. This is when maples, ashes, oaks, and hickories are at the height of their fall display. Normally by late October, the colors are fading and the leaves beginning to drop from the trees. Fall color is usually finished by the middle of November.

St. Louis Region:
Status
Beginning to turn

Because of the warmer than normal weather, especially the warm nighttime temperatures, color change is occurring slowly in many areas around our region. Some early-turning species continue to become more consistent although a lot of green is still visible, especially in and around St. Louis. Early defoliation is occurring in areas where rainfall has been less frequent. Flowering dogwood, sumac, and Virginia creeper seem to be the most consistent, but you can find individual sassafras, persimmon, hackberry, sugar maple, blackhaw, redbud, and a few hickories with decent color. If we get some overnights with lows in the 40s, it would help things progress and improve our late-season color.

Fall Color Outlook

MDC Forecasts Fall Color Peak In Mid-October........

In Missouri, the arrival of October means that the days become shorter and the leaves on the trees across the state make their annual change from green to vibrant shades of red, orange, yellow, purple, green and brown.

This year, the Missouri Department of Conservation is forecasting that the 2021 fall foliage color peak will arrive in the St. Louis region towards the middle to end of October, when the leaves reach their most vivid coloring prior to falling tot he ground.

Ted Smith of the MDC's Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center in Joplin, stated that while each tree has it's own unique warm color, the thing that makes Missouri so remarkable is the variety of trees located in one location........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Florida-Based Southern Marinas Purchased Millstone Marina........

A Florida-based investment group, Southern Marinas Holdings II, LLC., recently purchased an iconic marina at the Lake of the Ozarks, the Millstone Marina, which had been rehabilitated in the past few years.

On Monday, October 11, Southern Marinas stated that the Millstone Marina is the largest and most tenured marina on the Lake of the Ozarks, and it is the only RV resort with direct waterfront sites.

The historic Millstone Marina has been around for decades, and was once called "Morrison's Mooring".  The prior owners, the Howells, rehabbed the property, which had fallen into disrepair, and reimagined it into a popular destination by land and water with the addition of a large RV park........

Old River Control Structure discharging water into the Atchafalaya

Mississippi River Near Fort Adams, Louisiana

River Structures Control The Mississippi River's Path........

By volume, the Mississippi River is North America's largest river, however, it is always changing.  In order to combat the change, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has constructed a series of structures intended to keep the meandering Mississippi River in line.

The Old River Structure was constructed in the 1950s because the Mississippi River was making a natural course change to go down the Atchafalaya River, which is a shorter trip to the Gulf of Mexico.

The channel switch would have had devastating effects on the state of Louisiana and the nation, as there is so much infrastructure along the southernmost reaches of the Mississippi River.

The Old River Structure keeps 70 percent of the Mississippi River's water flowing down the main channel, while the remaining 30 percent is diverted into the Atchafalaya River.......

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois

No Proposals Submitted For Operating Art Keller Marina........

For the second time in a year, the Quincy Park District did not receive any proposals for privatizing the Art Keller Marina located on Quinsippi Island along the Mississippi River.  The proposals were due by September 28, with the goal of lining up new management for next April.

Park District Executive Director Rome Frericks says that a firm based in Maine had expressed interest, but did not submit a proposal due to the COVID-19 outbreak and dredging issues at the Marina.

Frericks advised the Park Board that staff were examining options for improving operations next year, which may include a host camper to help out with overnight security.  During a meeting with boaters in May, security was one of the main concerns of slipholders........

Non-Native Alligator Gar Found In River........

For the first time in recorded history, an alligator gar has found it's way into the Neosho River in Kansas.  While longnose, shortnose and spotted gar are common in Kansas waters, the alligator gar are not.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks reports that on September 20, angler Danny Lee "Butch" Smith reeled in the 4.5 foot, 39.5 pound fish while on a routine fishing trip along the Neosho River.

Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, regional fisheries supervisor Sean Lynott says that they do not know where the fish came from as there are no connecting waterways linking the Neosho River to the alligator gar's native waterways........

Hi Bill!
We have the foundation built!!! Unfortunately, since lumber prices are so high right now we are putting a hold on the build. Hoping all of this ends soon so we can get back to it.

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2020...  was sent to us by Capt'n Tim Crawford

Hello Bill, and fellow boaters,
I saw in Monday’s Columbus Day edition of RverBills the story of Neal Moore and his incredible journey in a canoe across The United States crossing 22 states, utilizing 22 rivers, traveling 7,500 miles! Attached is a photo of Neal just above Portage Island on Sept 24. He had just come down the Missouri River, turned his canoe upriver onto the Mississippi to go up and visit Hannibal. He came back down river landing in St Louis Sunday, Oct. 11.
I thought your site needed a photo of him on pool 26. It was inspiring to meet him. Check him out on

Mississippi River At Near Granite City, Illinois

Boat Still Aground On The Chain Of Rocks After A Week........

A 44 foot sailboat is still hung up on the Chain of Rocks in the Mississippi River near Granite City, Illinois nearly a week after firefighters rescued two people from the vessel.

Last week, a tow company dispatched three boats in an effort to recover the vessel, but they soon discovered they would need a barge and crane to safely retrieve it after concerns arose that the river current would take the rescue boats over the dam.

The nearby Chain of Rocks Canal allows vessels to transit the area, bypassing  the Chain of Rocks.  Evidently, the sailboat went down the main river channel by mistake........

Boating Safety

USPS Kicks Off Boat With Confidence Campaign........

The United States Power Squadrons, or America's Boating Club, has worked to make boating better for 106 years by offering wide-ranging educational and safety programs.

The organization recently announced the launch of their latest initiative to improve boating safety with the Boat With Confidence campaign.  The USPS developed this program after the U.S. Coast Guard's 2020 Recreational Boating Statistics report revealed that accidents, injuries and fatalities rose by 25 percent from 2019 and 2020 after several years of downward trends.

In order to help reverse the trend, the Boat With Confidence campaign set up a not-for-profit corporate partnership with boat and other marine manufacturers to advocate safety and education.  The funds raised through the campaign will help the Power Squadrons to provide boaters with an expansive suite of in person, online and on-water training opportunities........

Historic Warships

A Look Back At The USS St. Louis........

Back on August 7, 1861, James B. Eads was awarded a contract to construct seven gunboats, each being fitted out with 13 heavy cannon, 2.5 inches of armor plating.  Priced at $89,000 each, the vessels were to be delivered to Cairo, Illinois in 60 days.  Missing the deadline would cost $200 per boat per day.

In order to speed construction, Eads built four of the ironclads at the Carondelet boatyard and three more at Mound City, Illinois, near Cairo.  Crews launched the first gunboat, the USS St. Louis from the Carondelet yard on October 12.  Eads ran late on the completion of the gunboats and ended up paying the fines.  The vessels were completed by mid-November.

The St. Louis was renamed the Baron de Kalb as the Navy already had an ocean-going sloop named the St. Louis.  The Baron de Kalb sank after striking a Confederate mine in the Yazoo River on July 13, 1863 just a short time after the fall of the Confederate forces at Vicksburg, Mississippi to General Ulysses S. Grant ant the Union Army........

Federal Plan Could Mean Millions Of Dollars For Mo. Conservation Efforts........

Proposed federal legislation to provide over $1 billion each year for wildlife conservation efforts would result in millions of dollars more for projects intended to protect vulnerable species in Missouri.

According to Joe Jerek, spokesman for the Missouri Department of Conservation, the funds would benefit the state's Comprehensive Conservation Strategy, which mentions 209 conservation opportunity areas, including Big Buffalo Creek, Little Niangua River, Mahan's Creek, Missouri RIver Hills and Shoal Creek Woodlands.  Work would involve improving stream quality, woodland glades and forests.

The Grand River Grasslands and Upper Osage Grasslands have also been singled out for making improvements to the prairie and stream quality.  Jerek adds that making improvements to the bottomland forest and wetland floodplain landscapes along the Mississippi River in the River Bends zone is also a priority........

Connectivity Set To Improve On The Water........

While the technology concerning the internet and access to it has advanced considerably since the mid-1990s, connectivity for boaters on the water has lagged behind.  That is about to change.

According to Peter Broadhurst, Inmarsat senior vice president of yachting, passenger and safety says that the demand for on-board access to the internet has been increasing even before the COVID-19 outbreak drove more boaters into the water.

To provide connectivity on the water, Inmarsat recently released Orchestra and Elera.  Orchestra is basically a network of networks and geostationary and low Earth orbit satellites and land-based 5G.  Elera is a part of Orchestra, and is an advanced L-band service specifically for mobility customers........

Meramec River Near Kirkwood, Missouri

Rocks From I-44 Bridge Construction To Shore Up Park's Riverbank........

For more than a decade, the Meramec River has been whittling away at it's banks along Kirkwood's Emmenegger Park, and officials are hoping that recent efforts will put a stop to the erosion.

Crews have constructed a new Interstate 44 Bridge over the Meramec River and as part of the project, needed to move heavy equipment through the park to access the site of the new bridge's pilings.

Kyle Henke, director of Kirkwood Parks and Recreation Department says that the bridge contractor became aware of the issue and needed permission to access the construction site via the park.  Henke said that they arrived at a mutual agreement that leftover riprap from the bridge project would be placed along the shoreline just north of the new bridge........
