Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Melvin Price's Main Lock Has Reopened........
Once again, barges are moving through the main lock at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26 at Alton, Illinois. The main lock chamber recently reopened after being closed since the first of the year to facilitate the start of a three phase process to replace the vertical lift gate.
Alberici Constructors, Ltd. was awarded a $9.9 million contract for modifications to the adjacent piers for the installation of the new lift gate. Currently, workers at Alabama-based C&G Steel, a steel fabrication company, are fabricating the actual lift gate under a $7.7 million contract.
The third and final phase of the project will be the installation of the new gate. The project will require that the main lock be closed again in 2024 for the lift gate to be installed........

Missouri River Runoff Recent Blizzards Increases Runoff Forecast........
Recent spring snowstorms within the Missouri River Basin have improved the runoff forecast for the Missouri River above Sioux City, Iowa. On Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers raised this year's runoff forecast to 26.4 million acre-feet, which is 103 percent of average, an increase over last month's 21.5 MAF. The average runoff is 25.7 MAF.
Runoff into the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City was 1.7 MAF, which is only 57 percent of average. This figure, however, does not include the blizzard that swept across the Dakotas this past week.
John Remus, chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that spring precipitation, including the increased mountain snowpack and late season plains snow has improved runoff conditions across the upper basin........

Mississippi River Opinions Is A Flood Wall The Best Solution To Alton's Flooding Woes?
During a recent meeting of the Alton Riverfront Committee, a committee member suggested splitting the group into four smaller groups to discuss issues including a flood wall. Despite lack of public input, it appears that a floodwall will be built along Alton's riverfront.
Currently, engineers are developing plans for a permanent, five-foot-tall concrete flood wall along Sugar Alley, mere feet from Broadway/Highway 67 between Piasa and William Streets. Reportedly, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed a sturdy of flooding in Alton and determined that a flood wall will be the most expensive option out of a number of flood mitigation options.
The question is, why was the flood wall chosen and Broadway the best spot for it's construction? Will this planned flood wall accommodate the additional water displaced by the new Ardent Mills' flood wall? Despite these concerns, Alton's development director says that they will present plans to the city council later this year for a vote to proceed with construction........

Mississippi River Near Winona, Minnesota Barriers Proposed As Part Of $17 Million Proposal To Slow Invasive Species........
A bill currently in the Minnesota legislature would allocate close to $17 million to limit invasive carp movement up the Mississippi River, including funding to catch carp via fishing, researching how dam gates open and installing a device using sound and bubbles at Lock and Dam No.5 north of Winona.
Proposals for a carp barrier come on the heels of a record catch of silver carp in March south of Winona. The low population of invasive carp combined with the fact that the captured fish were all born within the same year indicates that there is not a breeding population around that part of the Mississippi River.
University of Minnesota professor Peter Sorensen says that no one has the technology to stop or control the carp 100 percent, but if you can prevent enough adults from passing through that they can't reproduce, there may be a chance to stop them........

Mississippi River At Moline, Illinois Engineers Discuss Demolishing Old I-74 Bridge, Saving Costs, The Environment........
Even as crews are working to demolish the old Interstate 74 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River, two lead engineers gave a presentation at Western Illinois University's Quad Cities campus on how their crews are managing issues that crop up.
George Ryan, the I-74 Quad Cities corridor manager says that the greatest challenge is that whenever you are working on a river, be it high or low water, there are a lot of different things, including the surrounding environment.
Ryan adds that experts determined that the best approach to demolishing the bridge is to disassemble the structure and carefully excavate it's concrete supports as opposed to imploding the span........

Added Sunday Missouri River Near Chesterfield, Missouri Drowned Paddler's Family Suing The State........
Back in May 2022, 32 year old Caleb Gage drowned while on a canoe trip with a friend when his boat capsized near a low-head dam along the Missouri River near the Howell Island Conservation Area.
Last week, Gage's family filed suit in St. Louis County Circuit Court claiming that two Missouri agencies failed to keep the waterway safe. The suit names the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
The lawsuit claims that dam created a strong current that caused the canoe to capsize, causing Gage's death. The suit alleges that the dam was in disrepair and the state failed to remove access to the chute or warn boaters of the unsafe conditions........

Added Sunday Ohio River Near Louisville, Kentucky Officials Report Methanol Barge Has Been Recovered........
On Friday afternoon, officials with Louisville Metro Emergency Services reported that the methanol barge that had been lodged against the McAlpine Dam for more than a week has been removed.
Early Friday, work on removing the barge had resumed after being put on hold due to severe storms. Earlier in the week, crews had started transferring methanol to a receiver vessel.
Crews were able to safely remove the barge after determining that enough methanol had been removed from the vessel. Air and water testing continued Friday afternoon and continued to show no detection of methanol in the air or water........

Ross Geerdes, director of The Driftless Area Education and Visitor Center says that there are 125 different fish species in the Mississippi River but they can't have all of them.
Geerdes says that once the weather warms up, staff from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Allamakee County Conservation will hit the river to catch the fish that will inhabit the new aquarium........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton To Vote On New Marina Pact Monday........
On Monday, April 10, the Alton City Council's committee of the whole will be holding a meeting during which the aldermen will be voting on a three year operation management agreement with Seahorse Ranch Marine, Inc.
Last summer, the city had requested proposals for a new marina manager and of the submissions, Rob Honke, owner of Honke Property, LLC in Alton was at the top of the list.
Honke, who is a lifelong boater, says that he will operate the marina under the Seahorse Ranch name in order to separate it from Honke Property. Honke's team is currently working on de-winterizing the marina for the boating season........

On Tuesday, April 11 at 6:30 pm, the Sierra Club of Alton will be hosting the Looping Waterways Speaker Series at the Old Bakery Brewing Company, 400 Landmarks Boulevard.
Captain Ken and Cheryl Pfeiffer, who are Gold Loopers and members of the American Great Loop Cruisers Association, and their First Mate, the dog Critter, will be discussing their 17 month journal aboard their 40 foot trawler, Turn The Paige.
The couple will talk about how to plan and prepare for the trip, the waterways they traveled along and the variety of sights they saw and the people they encountered along the way........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Melvin Price Locks And Dam Reopened........
On March 31, 2023, the main lock chamber of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam located at Upper Mississippi River Mile 200.8 reopened following a 90 day planned closure that allowed crews to demolish and replace an overlook building.
This work was the second phase of a three phase plan for replacing the main chamber's lift gates. Phase II was the demolition of the overlook and the construction of a new one that will not affect the access of the lift gates.
Phase III, the replacement of the lift gates, will be carried out in the winter of 2025 and will require another lock closure. The lift gates are currently being fabricated and should be completed later this summer........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois The Grafton Ferry Opening Next Weekend........
Next Friday, the Grafton Ferry will be kicking off their 2023 season. Over the spring and summer, the ferry will carry motorists and tourists between Missouri and Illinois several times each weekend.
Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow says that Friday, April 14th will be the Grafton Ferry's opening day. He adds that the operator of the ferry, the Calhoun Ferry company will keep the rates the same as last year.
The Grafton Ferry reduces the time that the trip from the St. Louis and St. Charles area to Grafton takes by about 20 to 30 minutes........

Upper Mississippi River Valley "Worst Case Scenario" Weather May Mean Major Flooding........
The forecast for the Upper Mississippi River Basin is predicting above-normal temperatures and precipitation for the region over the next two weeks. This is expected to cause snowpacks to melt in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The latest flood risk briefing from the National Weather Service's Quad Cities Bureau, these conditions have created a 50 percent or greater chance of major flooding along the Mississippi River, from Dubuque, Iowa to Burlington, Iowa.
Senior NWS hydrologist Matt Wilson says that this is a bit of the worst case scenario that he has been warning of since February. He adds that this may be the start of a more severe spring flood season than we would have otherwise hoped for........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton's Proposed Flood Wall Under Discussion........
During the recent meeting of the Alton Riverfront Committee, a committee member suggested that the group divide into smaller groups to discuss matters including the flood wall.
Despite the lack of public input and the question of if a flood wall is the best solution for Alton's flooding issues, the wall is happening. Currently, engineers are developing plans for a permanent five foot tall concrete structure along Sugar Alley between Piasa and William Streets near Broadway and Highway 67.
Why was the wall option selected and the location along Broadway determined to be the best spot for it? Will the planned structure be able to accommodate the additional water displaced by the new Ardent Mills floodwall?

Ohio River Near Louisville, Kentucky Crews Removed 1,400 Tons Of Methanol From Wayward Barge........
On Tuesday, crews were working to remove one of two barges still stuck on the Ohio River following last week's crash. The barges are lodged against the McAlpine Dam. One of the barges was carrying 1,400 tons of methanol.
Crews worked to offload the methanol onto the a receiving barge in a process that took several hours. The U.S. Coast Guard had closed the river to traffic as a precaution.
Over 1,600 air and water samples have been collected and all have tested negative for the presence of methanol. Louisville Water has also stated that there is no impact on the city's drinking water as the barges are downstream of the water intake........

American Serenade ACL's Newest Riverboat Passed Sear Trials........
This week, the newest riverboat constructed for cruising the Mississippi River has passed it's sea trials and is now enroute to New Orleans for it's inaugural season cruising the Mighty Mississippi.
On Thursday, American Cruise Lines announced that they had accepted delivery of the American Serenade from Chesapeake Shipbuilding as scheduled. The vessel is the sixth riverboat in ACL's new series and the 18th small ship Chesapeake Shipbuilding has built for the cruise line.
The American Serenade's first cruise is scheduled to depart from New Orleans on April 20. American Cruise Lines says that they intend to christen the riverboat during it's stop in Vidalia, Louisiana on April 23rd........

Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa Environmentalists Concerned About Proposed Coal Plant Discharge Into The River........
Environmental groups are raising concerns about a proposal by the operators of the George Neal Energy Center North in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa allowing them to release coal ash leachate into the Missouri River.
Coal ash leachate is water that has flowed through coal ash. In this case, the leachate is from precipitation that seeps through the coal ash. The Environmental Protection Agency states that coal ash contains heavy metals such as mercury, arsenic and cadmium.
Michael Schmidt, an attorney with the Iowa Environmental Council says that they believe that the plant's operator, MidAmerican Energy, should be providing treatment for the leachate prior to releasing it into the Missouri River. MidAmerican claims that the water would be treated........

April 4, 1998 - A runaway barge slammed into the President Casino on the Admiral. One of the mooring lines was cut, and the Admiral swung out into the river. Fifty people were hurt and two thousand gamblers had to wait for hours to be evacuated by boat. The Admiral was later moved upstream to Laclede’s Landing, away from the barge traffic. Mississippi River At St. Paul, Minnesota Rising River Levels Prompt Flood Emergency Declaration.......
As the Mississippi River rises, officials in St. Paul, Minnesota have declared a local flood emergency. St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter says that the procedural declaration is the first step in making a quick response to the forecasted flooding on of the Mississippi River.
Carter says that due to the recent snowfall, continuing snowmelt and additional forecasted precipitation, they are expecting significant spring flooding from the Mississippi River.
The declaration will give St. Paul's emergency management department the power to call on aid and resources from other local and state agencies and guarantees the city's eligibility for federal aid and reimbursement if necessary........

Invasive Species News Aquatic Invasive Species Commission Reports On Regulatory Issues........
A collaboration between Bass Pro Shops, YETI and recreational and fishing industry stakeholders, known as the Aquatic Invasive Species Commission, recently released a report that identifies regulatory gaps in addressing aquatic invasive species.
The commission is calling on Congress to modernize laws, increase spending and improve coordination at federal, state, local and tribal levels to fight the harmful aquatic invasive species.
The commission's report states that policies should maintain access to boaters and anglers, balancing safe usage with the long-term health of natural resources........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois Excitement Increases About Piasa Park Redevelopment Project........
The recent unveiling of the new Alton Piasa Park Redevelopment Project has driven an increase in the energy towards the City of Alton itself, the National Scenic Byway and tourism in the region.
Cory Jobe, CEO and President of the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau says that they have been working hard on the project for about a year. He said that they considered other locations for the new discovery center project, but they knew that they needed to redevelop Piasa Park.
Jobe adds that the project will help develop the product for visitors that travel the National Scenic Byway. He says that there will also be improvements made at the Lewis and Clark Tower in Hartford to improve it's look as well as make it more user friendly........

Mississippi River Valley Spring Brings Return Of Commerce, Raises Concerns Along The Mississippi River........
The month of April has arrived, and with it comes increased concerns about the Mississippi River watershed. State and federal officials are preparing for the possibility of spring flooding, while last fall's drought that halted barge traffic looms in the background.
The drought was an expensive reminder that the vital Mississippi River is quite vulnerable. Lou Dell'Orco, chief of operations for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District says that people don't realize it, but the Mississippi River is major shipping artery.
It is uncertain what this spring will bring to the Mississippi River Valley, an the National Weather Service's spring flooding forecast calls the risk for flooding "well above normal"........

April 4, 1998 In River History
About 7:50 pm on April 4, 1998, a tow of the M/V Anne Holly, comprising 12
loaded and 2 empty barges, which was traveling northbound on the Mississippi
River through the St. Louis Harbor, struck the Missouri-side pier of the
center span of the Eads Bridge. Eight barges broke away from the tow and
drifted back through the Missouri span. Three of these barges drifted toward
the Admiral. The drifting barges struck the Admiral, causing 8 of its 10
mooring lines to break. The Admiral then rotated clockwise downriver, away
from the Missouri riverbank. The captain of the Anne Holly disengaged his
vessel from the six remaining barges in the tow and placed the Anne Holly’s
bow against the Admiral’s bow to hold it against the bank. About the time
the Anne Holly began pushing against the Admiral, the Admiral’s next-to-last
mooring line parted. The Anne Holly and the single mooring wire that
remained attached to the Admiral’s stern anchor held the Admiral near the
Missouri bank. No deaths resulted from the accident; 50 people were examined
for minor injuries. Of those examined, 16 were sent to local hospitals for
further treatment. Damages were estimated at $11 million. |

Lake Of The Ozarks Sunrise Fire District Adds Another Fire Boat........
The Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District recently doubled their fleet of fireboats, as on Saturday, April 1, 2023, the Board of Directors voted 4 - 1 to approve the purchase of an additional boat for the district.
The vessel is a 2015 Stanley Marine Fire Boat that was purchased used from the Sculleville Fire Protection District in New Jersey. The vessel is a 32 foot aluminum deck boat fitted with twin 200 Horsepower Yamaha engines, a 1,500 gpm pump, landing ramp, deck crane, radar and all band radios.
If purchased new, the vessel is estimated to cost $300,000 or more. The District paid $175,000 for it. The funding was taken from a money market account that was set up for the purchase of new air packs. The District was recently awarded a $264,000 AFG Grant for air packs, so the funds were freed up........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois Grafton Ferry Opening On April 14th.......
Officials with the Calhoun Ferry Co. have announced that the Grafton Ferry will be reopening for the 2023 season on April 14th and operate Fridays through Sundays.
The ferry's hour will be 10 am to 10 pm Fridays, 8 am to 10 pm on Saturdays and 8 am to 8 pm on Sundays. The fee schedule will remain the same as last year: $9 for a one way ticket, $17 for a round trip and $70 for a book of 10 one way tickets.
Cory Jobe, president and CEO of the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau says that Grafton Ferry opening signals the tourism season is in full swing and they can't wait to host all of the visitors........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois The Grafton Flea Market Opening April 22nd........
The arrival of spring indicates that the tourism season has returned to the Riverbend region. Among the attractions that draw visitors to the Riverbend is the flea market at The Loading Dock.
From April through October, The Loading Dock hosts the flea market over the fourth weekend of the month, affording residents and visitors the chance to shop from over 60 vendors. The first day of this season's flea market will be Saturday, April 22nd.
The Grafton flea market offers visitors a wide variety of crafts, antiques, clothes, collectibles decor items, plants and much more. The flea market is covered and will be held rain or shine........

Asian Carp Update One Year After Asian Carp Rebranding........
Overt the past 20 years, a series of four freshwater fish species, collectively known as Asian carp, have become quite the nuisance in waterways across the Midwest.
Plenty of strategies have been formulated to keep the carp in check, including a re-branding effort by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources that changed the invasive species name from Asian carp to copi, a play on the word, copious.
The IDNR's mission was simple, to get the carp out of the waterways and into people's tummies. Kevin Irons, the assistant chief of fisheries for the IDNR says that Copi is a clean, tender and flaky meat that is perfect for fish fries and is versatile enough to be used in empanadas and Rangoon........

Mississippi River Near Perry County, Missouri New Mississippi River Bridge To Replace The Chester Bridge......
Last week, crews began preliminary drilling operations for the new bridge crossing the Mississippi River between Perry County, Missouri and Randolph County, Illinois.
According to Brian Okenfuss, an engineers with the Missouri Department of Transportation, the drilling is to ensure that there are no voids in the bedrock and that the bridge's foundations are designed appropriately.
After the preliminary drilling is done the bridge design will be finalized and the environmental permits will be acquired. Okenfuss says that the bridge should be completed by 2026 at a cost of around $240 million........

Ohio River Near Louisville, Kentucky Update: As Of Sunday, No Methanol Detected IN The Ohio River........
Officials report that no methanol has been detected in air or water testing conducted following several barges breaking free from a tow last week and becoming lodged against the McAlpine Locks and Dam.
Louisville Metro Emergency Services states that 341 air quality samples have been taken between 6 am Saturday and 6 am Sunday and have shown no traces of methanol. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg says that air and drinking water is safe following last week's barge accident.
Two barges loaded with corn and methanol are still lodged against the dam structure, but officials say that there is no evidence of leaks. Additional salvage equipment arrived on scene Saturday as crews worked to remove driftwood from around the barges........

On Tuesday, April 11, 2023, Ken and Cheryl Pfeiffer of Grafton will be at the Old Bakery Beer Company in Alton to talk about their experiences during their 17 month, 4,500 mile journey on the Great Loop.
The Pfeiffers and their dog "Critter" took their 40 foot trawler, Turn The Paige on the Great Loop around the eastern half of the United States. They will discuss their observations on environmental issues like barge traffic effects, pollution and shoreline degradation.
The event will be hosted by the Piasa Palisades Group, Sierra Club. Attendees are invited to have dinner and meet the Pfeiffers at 5 pm or join in the program at 6:30 pm........

A new book by Alton native Michael Barr Mossman, Historic Alton: Paintings and Narratives has been released. The book is perfect for Alton history buffs, resident, natives or art lovers.
Historic Alton: Paintings and Narratives is a collection of paintings by the former Alton resident who now resides in Orange Park, Florida with his wife Barbara. Mossman says that he grew up in Alton and walked every street in Alton. He quipped that he knew Alton like the back of his hand.
The paintings in the book were inspired by historic photographs and documents. Several of the paintings are historically accurate, but the earlier parts of Alton's history are depicted in illustrations........

Invasive Asian carp are slowly but surely making their way up the Mississippi River and it may not be long before they start to appear in large numbers in Lake Pepin.
The Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance is hoping to see mitigation before that happens in order to protect the river and it's tributaries. The carp have taken over portions of the Lower Mississippi River and affected the economies of river towns.
Friends of the Mississippi River propose to a barrier or deterrent that is sometimes referred to as a "disco wall" that would be installed at Lock and Dam No.5 near Winona. The barrier is a light and bubble machine installed at the bottom of the lock chamber. Carp do not like sounds that the barrier makes........

While the National Weather Service is continuing their assessment of Friday's tornado outbreak, ourquadcities.com is working to compile a lot of the information.
One thing noticed so far about Friday's storms is there is more proof that tornados can and do cross the Mississippi River. The tornado originated in Jackson County, Iowa and ended on Jo Daviess COunty, Illinois.
There were some reports of the tornado being spotted on the river........

Ohio River Near Louisville, Kentucky Vessel Traffic Has Resumed At The McAlpine Locks And Dam........
Officials report that as of the morning of March 30th, the queue of vessel traffic that had been waiting to pass through the channel had been cleared following traffic restrictions stemming from a barge break away and collision with the McAlpine Locks and Dam near Louisville, Kentucky.
As of 6 am on March 30th, at least 141 air quality samples had been collected, with no evidence of health risks. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg stated that teams were also collecting water samples with no evidence of leakage.
The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet says that a barge carrying methanol is partially submerged. Environmental scientist Rob Blair says that if all methanol was discharges, there would be a fish kill and wildlife could be affected up to 15 miles downstream........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois 7 Year Old Reels In A Monster Catfish........
During a recent fishing trip on the Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois with her father, 7 year old Layla Sapp nearly met her match when she hooked into a monster catfish.
Layla's father, Tyler Sapp says that the fish was nearly as tall as she is, and nearly as heavy as well. The tyke weighs 55 pounds, and the catfish ended up weighing 49 pounds..
Sapp said that Layla loved holding the fish, but she was in disbelief. He added that anything over 25 pounds is considered a big catfish, and catching a 49 pounder, there are adults that fished their entire lives that can't say that. She did it at 7........

Holland is retiring from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers following a career of 33 years and approximately 18 different assignments, including the past three years as commander of the Mississippi Valley Engineer Division. This position also involves service as president of the MRC.

high water inspection trip, during which Major General Diana
Holland stated that this would be her last trip aboard the M/V Mississippi.
