A RiverBills Koozie Sighting.... was sent to us by Misti Hackman who hails out of Lake Center Marina

Hello RiverBill!

A big group of Weber's just went to Sawbill Bay in Ontario Canada to go fishing. I was using my RiverBill's Koozie and since many of us check your website daily we decided to take some pictures! We got pretty creative with the pictures and hung the koozie from the end of a fishing pole! Our group consisted of 7 brothers and 5 cousins. It was a great time, but now we are back home fishing in the Mississippi!

The first picture is of the whole group (minus one who took the picture)!

The second picture is 7 Weber brothers!

Crews Dredging The Alton Marina........

Over the past three weeks, an excavator has been hard at work digging up muddy sediment from the Alton Marina, and placing it aboard a barge.

According to Karen Baker-Brncic, the General Manager of Alton Marina, this is the first time that the entire marina has been dredged since it opened in 1996.

The dredge work began on July 28, but it had been postponed due to the flooding earlier this year.  Harbor Master Greg Brown said that the dredging is expected to be completed on December 1........

Pike County Bridge May Close Due To Poor Condition........

Concerns are high that a bridge linking Pike County, Missouri with Pike County, Illinois may close because it is in poor condition.  In 2014, the Missouri Department of Transportation placed weight limits on the Champ Clark Bridge.

The span opened in 1928, and residents claim that it is of vital importance to the local economy.  Resident Tim Carter says that closing the bridge would be devastating if the span were to close.

If the Champ Clark Bridge were shut down, the trip across the Mississippi River would increase from 10 minutes to about an hour........

Corps Confirms Radioactive Contamination In Yards Near Creek........

On Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers confirmed that there is radioactive contamination in several residential yards along Coldwater Creek.

The Corps say that the contamination is a low level radioactive contamination of thorium 230, which is a uranium decay byproduct.  The pollution is the remnant of the country's early nuclear weapons program.

The radioactive contamination has likely been on the properties for several decades.  It was carried there by Coldwater Creek, which flows through several subdivisions before emptying into the Missouri River........

News Release From BoatUS

Paddle vs. Prop: Three Safety Tips for Stand Up Paddlers When Boats are Around

ANNAPOLIS, Md. August 19, 2015 – When it comes to enjoying the outdoors, stand up paddleboarding (SUP) has led the nation in growth with a 38 percent increase in participation from 2013 to 2014, according to the Outdoor Foundation’s 2015 Outdoor Recreation Participation Topline Report. But as these human-powered watercraft become more common in crowded harbors, busy waterfronts and other navigable waterways, sharing the water with both recreational boats and commercial vessels requires paddlers to up their safety game. With many of its half-million members owning both boats and paddlecraft, BoatUS offers its unique look at the issue with three easy to remember safety rules for stand up paddlers.

When is a paddleboard a boat? According to the US Coast Guard an SUP is considered a “vessel,” so it’s important to understand certain boating responsibilities. Follow all local navigation rules and use common sense when paddling around other vessels that may not be as maneuverable or are restricted by their draft or size. Generally, a paddleboard is more easily able to turn and stop whereas larger craft take time and distance to stop. Typically, it is safest to pass astern of other vessels and let them cross in front of you. Try to avoid heavy boat traffic and pick a route away from congestion.

Practice defensive paddling: Defensive paddling is preventing collisions and mishaps in spite of the actions of others around you. Remember boats may travel faster than you do and can carry a large wake. Some boats have awkward blind spots that prevent good visibility at certain trim angles so don’t assume a boater can always see you, especially at dawn or dusk. Wear bright colors and wear your life jacket with a whistle attached. Falling in, or swimming in heavily trafficked areas can lead to the start of a bad chain of events. In narrow channels stay as far right as possible and avoid crossing busy lanes. If you must, cross perpendicular to the lane so you get across quickly. If in a group, cross as a compact group – spreading out in a line like a bunch of baby ducks hinders traffic and increases the chance for a collision.

Don’t leave home without it: A life jacket is the minimum gear – but it only works if you wear it so don’t leave it strapped to the board. If you’re concerned about comfort, take a look at high-tech, low-maintenance belt-pack inflatables or the newest vest designs that offer complete freedom of movement. Add a whistle - it will always beat yelling at the top of your lungs. Avoid paddling at night, but if you must, you’ll have to show a white light in sufficient time to avoid a collision. A flashlight or headlamp meets this requirement; a glow stick does not. And finally, a safety leash is most helpful in preventing an awkward and potentially dangerous separation from your board.

If you’d like to learn more about boating safely, visit the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water at www.BoatUS.org.

Water Test of the

1946 Cracker Box Boat

I had a brief phone call from River Bill this evening.
He told me that there were many people following our project and to try and explain how it came out.
In a nut shell all I can say is OH BOY, but here is what pretty much happened.

We have been planning and working on this boat for almost a year.
Larry Slavic from Lake Center Marina owns the boat.
Larry, My Son Randy, Theresa, and myself have put in countless hours recreating the wheel.
Our plan was to put it in the water early Saturday morning without much of a crowd.
Larry has owned the boat for over thirty years and never had it in the water.
Saturday was the first time since 1952 that the boat has floated.
We had no idea what to expect. With that being said, Our move was to put Randy, A licensed race driver, in full race gear, and a chase rescue boat per say on the first trip out.
A good plan as it would sound , on a great morning and quiet water, I guess did not go that bad.
Our biggest problem was that my Dog Charlie decided to jump out of the chase boat somewhere between 30 and 50 MPH. NEVER ACUSE CHARLIE OF BEING INTELLIGENT but I bet he rethinks that one before doing it again. That is another story in itself, but back to the boat.

The boat handled pretty well but would simply shut off at 3500 RPM
We felt comfortable with handling and took turns driving, including me.
When we took it back to Lake Center and put it on the hoist, a group had assembled to have a look.
In a very brief conversation with Bud, and the crew from Lake Center. We were immediately told what the problem was. These guys work with EFI Mercs every day A clogged screen in the bottom of the fuel pump. It was agreed that they should fix it when they had time,, But had no idea it would be in 30 minutes. A BIG THANK YOU TO THE CREW AT LAKE CENTER You made a lot of people happy that day.

BACK TO THE WATER
An easy 60 MPH and amazingly stable We all feel the boat is safe and as fast as it really needs to be at this time
I guess we have another boat on our team

City Council OKs Development Of Riverfront Plans........

Tuesday, the Hannibal City Council authorized spending up to $27,500 to have the engineering firm, Klingner & Associates, develop three project concepts for the Hannibal riverfront.

Andy Dorian, the Parks and Recreation Director, said that a committee comprised of city officials interviewed three local engineering firms, selecting Klingner & Associates based upon their experience with projects on the Mississippi River, and their working relationships with agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

There will be several factors under consideration during the concept generation phase, including repairs to existing infrastructure, accommodations for riverboat docking, and a cost/benefit analysis of Hannibal's marina........

Extensive Renovations In Store For Clemens Law Offices........

Over the next year, one of several landmarks that symbolize Mark Twain's ties to Hannibal will be undergoing a restoration.  Work started on Monday morning at the John M. Clemens Justice of the Peace Office, with the removal of furnishings and artifacts.

According to Henry Sweets, the executive director of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, crews will be removing the interior wall coverings and siding from the building, allowing access to the structure's timbers so that workers can correct the visible rightward lean.

Sweets says that the building settled over the past fifty years, and over time, the structure has become very fragile.  He added that the building needs some tender love and care........

Across the industry, boat sales totaled 25,778, an increase of 5.3% from 24,489 during July 2014.  Ryan Kloppe, Statistical Surveys national marine sales manager, said that July is usually the third or fourth best sales month each year........

News Release

Lake of the Ozarks -- Shootout Boat Race Information

Captain Michael A. Turner, commanding officer, Troop F, Jefferson City, would like to remind boaters of the upcoming Lake of the Ozarks Shootout boat race event being held near the Hurricane Deck Bridge on Lake of the Ozarks. The event will take place from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, August 29, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Sunday, August 30. Boating traffic will be restricted to no wake, idle speed from the 31.5-mile marker to the 36-mile marker of the main channel due to the event. The no wake, idle speed restriction will begin 30 minutes prior to the event start time each day and will continue to be enforced up to 30 minutes after the last race each day. The race course itself will stretch from approximately the 33-mile marker to the 34.7-mile marker on the southwest side of the main channel. There will be a 400-foot buffer zone between the race course and designated spectator area.

Boaters wishing to enter or exit coves blocked by the race course during the event will be allowed to do so upon the signal of Missouri State Highway Patrol marine operations troopers, or other authorized event personnel, at the earliest and safest opportunity. Every attempt will be made to minimize inconvenience to boaters navigating in the area.

Anchoring will be allowed in the designated spectator area on the northeast side of the main channel. There will be event volunteers on the water to assist spectators in locating the designated spectator area and safely anchoring vessels. Boaters are encouraged to use caution while traveling to and from the event, since a large turnout from the boating public is expected.

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Join us in supporting the Drive To Zero Highway Deaths. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!

Cause Of Northern Marine Yacht Capsizing Revealed........

Over a year after an 85-foot Northern Marine yacht capsized shortly after it's launch, investigators have revealed the reason he vessel turned turtle.

In May of 2014, the Baaden capsized and sank upon launch, generating a viral video, and bringing about the closure of Northern Marine's parent company, New World Yacht Builders.

Approximately three weeks ago, the National Transportation Safety Board released a report that cited the likely cause of the accident as the combined effects of an error made in the final weighing of the vessel, causing an incorrect assessment of it's center of gravity, as well as an overestimation of the ballast weight installed........

Native Mussel Species Making A Comeback In The River........

A type of native mussel species is making a comeback in the Upper Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.  These mussels had been wiped out by pollution.

The mussels died out after farm runoff, industrial waste and sewage tainted the river.  Approximately 15 years ago, biologists found that some mussel species were returning, due to the efforts made in improving water quality.

Tamara Smith, an endangered species biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said that mussels are akin to a canary in a coal mine, if they are doing badly, the water quality is poor, if they thrive, the water quality is good........

High River Levels Grounded Sea Plane Flights........

2015 was to have been the year that Barron Aviation Private Flight Services started offering flights aboard a sea plane.  Airport officials are saying that the high water will pretty much keep the special aircraft on the ground.

According to Robin Carroll, the fixed base operator at Hannibal Regional Airport, it isn't so much the level of the Mississippi River, or Mark Twain Lake, that is causing problems, but rather the debris carried by the water.

Carroll says that it just isn't possible to make safe landings on the lake, or the river.  She added that an attempt would be just too dangerous........

Boat Sales

The number of boats sold in July increased 2%, or 3,313 boats over July 2014.  The total price paid for these boats increased 12%, to 298 million.

Five out of six segments of the boat market by length saw volume increases.  These increases were led by vessels in the 36 to 45 foot range, which increased 13%, from 665 to 750 vessels sold.........

River History....

August 15, 1989 In River History

On August 15, 1989, a committee of Alton aldermen recommended unanimously to approve a proposal that Alton sponsor a hydroelectric power plant at the new dam.  The vote to proceed followed an hour long discussion between the aldermen and John Sachs, an attorney representing Sithe/Energies Group.  Sithe had proposed constructing the hydropower plant at Lock and Dam No.26 a few months prior........

River Angel Assists Travelers........

Many people take on the journey down the Mississippi River, from source to sea, and most, if not all couldn't take the trip without the assistance of River Angels, like Layne Logue of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Layne will pick up travelers and help them run errands, as well as providing them a place to spend the night prior to shoving off to continue their journeys.

Layne says that he has been a River Angel for the past three years.  In his first year, Layne helped seven or eight people, and 36 last year.  So far this year, Layne has helped 26........

Commemoration of the Peace and Friendship Treaties of 1815

Hello,

The summer of 1815 saw all of the native American tribes that lived upon the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers invited by Missouri’s Territorial Governor William Clark to meet at Portage des Sioux for treaties of Peace and Friendship with the United States. Everyone is invited to join the City of Portage des Sioux and the Land Between the Rivers Historical Society as we commemorate this national historic event on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Portage des Sioux. Others joining us that day will be State Representative Anne Zerr, Mr. Bud Clark who is the 3rd Great-Grandson of William Clark, and various other national, state and local dignitaries.

This is the two-hundredth anniversary of the date the Osage signed. The commemoration is being held in the original location the Osage and numerous other tribes came together and signed treaties that summer of 1815. Portage des Sioux is approximately 14 miles north of St. Charles on Hwy 94 from its’ intersection with Hwy 370. Turn west on Hwy J, and the event is on Saucier and Fourth Streets. There will many signs with directions to the commemoration on the day of the event. This is an outdoor event and lawn chairs and blankets are suggested. Champ Clark Bridge On Mo's Critical List....  But It's One Of 600....

The Missouri Department of Transportation says that the Champ Clark Bridge, linking Illinois to Louisiana, Missouri, is on the statewide list of rural bridges in need of replacement, but it is only one of around 600 across Missouri in critical condition.

Currently, the 87 year old Champ Clark Bridge is undergoing it's annual safety inspection.  Most bridges are inspected bi-annually, however, officials say more frequent inspections are necessary on this span due to it's age and condition.

The cost of replacing the Champ Clark Bridge is estimated around $60 million, which would be divided between Illinois and Missouri.  Illinois says that they can come up with their portion, however, Missouri cannot........

Capt'n Carl and I were headed to the Boathouse Sunday evening when we spotted Captain Tim's Pirate ship in the North Shore Marina harbor.  We stopped to say hello and discovered our friend Becca from the St. Louis Boat and Sportshow on board. She had a pirate cruise earlier that day and invited us onboard the ship to say hello and to share a cold beverage.

It's (L to R) Capt'n Carl, Wench Martha, (a photo bomber), RiverBill, Becca, Captain Tim and Barnacle Bill.

If anyone has or knows of a waverunner or other small boat that would be available in the Portage des Sioux area this Saturday that we could borrow please give me a call. We would only need it for about an hour and a half, roughly 2 PM to 3:30 PM. Senator:  Stopping Asian Carp Advance Foiled By Illinois Interests........

This week, Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow voiced support for an expensive plan for keeping Asian carp out of the Great Lakes by cutting the water connection between the Mississippi River basin at Chicago.

Stabenow said that she would support a hydrological separation of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins.  She added that they are trying to determine how to get the support to complete the project.

She added that the people of Illinois view the Chicago River system as a critical industrial and commercial and transportation corrodor.  Michael Borgstrom, president of Wandella Sightseeing said that the hydrological separation is a costly, irrational and irreversible response to a situation that has been managed by federal, state and local agencies........

Small Boats Get Their Own Shootout Poker Run........

On Friday, August 21, there will be a poker run held just for small boats under 32 feet, the Li'l Boat & Pontoon Poker Run.  Jim and Kelli Case, owners of Border Xpressions saw a need for a poker run for smaller boats, sponsoring the first in 2014.

According to Jim Case, they had participated in The Big Poker Run in 2012 in a 38 foot boat, and noticed that people in smaller vessels were lining the shoreline watching the action.  While watching the 2013 event, the seeds were sown for the Li'l Poker Run.

The Li'l Poker Run offers smaller boats and pontoons their own day on the water, drawing cards at different stops, while having a fun day on the lake, all while promoting the Shootout, and raising money for charities........

The Goldenrod Showboat

Historic Riverboat Headed To The Scrapper........

A former Mississippi River showboat that preservationists have been trying to save from the scrapper may be heading there after all.

The not-for-profit Historic Riverboat Preservation Association admits that they have not been able to raise the funds needed to save the 106 year old Goldenrod Showboat, which had been a fixture on the St. Louis and St. Charles riverfronts.

The Goldenrod had been named a national historic landmark prior to it's closing in 2001.  She had been in storage on the Illinois River since 2003.  Recently, the vessel was relocated and ended up grounded, causing the hull to buckle........

The Goldenrod Showboat

Efforts Begin To Salvage The Showboat........

The Historic Riverboat Preservation Association recently met in Kirkwood to discuss the future of the Goldenrod Showboat.  The consensus is that the structure would not survive another spring season.

Efforts have begun to salvage as much of the Goldenrod's interior so that it may be a feature in a riverboat museum.  Over the weekend, volunteers worked on removing stained glass windows.

Jacob Medford, the HRPA Vice President says that this was the most difficult decision the group has had to make.  The group is requesting donations of packing supplies, bubble wrap and tape........

Lower Mississippi River Delta

Heavy Silt Deposits In The Delta........

The recent high water levels along the Mississippi River have left behind heavy silt in the Mississippi River Delta.  This has resulted in the lowering of the recommended maximum draft from 47 feet to 45 feet for vessels using the Southwest Pass.

The Southwest Pass is the main shipping channel used in the Mississippi River Delta.  A wide variety of cargoes enter and leave the Mississippi River via the Southwest Pass, as it is the only channel deep draft vessels can use.

This recommendation was issued by the Louisiana Maritime Association, and is in effect immediately.  Inchcape Shipping Services says that the draft reduction will likely be in effect for several weeks........

Truman Lake

Microburst Causes Mayhem At A Marina........

On Tuesday, August 4, a line of thunderstorms momentarily drenched portions of Central Missouri, but a microburst lasting about a minute left devastation at a marina on Truman Lake.

At Sterett Creek Resort, witnesses saw a wall of rain heading for the resort's Dock 5, and a minute later, half of that dock was flipped upside down on the other half.

Of the 44 boats on Dock 5, eleven were seriously damaged, and seven others were crushed, and unable to be removed.  Ken Beyer and his wife are the fairly new owners of the resort, owning it for about two years.  Since purchasing it, there have been three incidents where the wind speed was over 60 MPH........

The goal of this enforcement operation was to detect intoxicated boaters and other violations that contribute to boating crashes and drownings. Also, the enforcement location was selected based on the high number of drinking- and impairment-related boating crashes, in addition to reported behavioral problems, illegal drug usage, and underage alcohol consumption.

The following is a list of enforcement contacts made by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri Department of Conservation during the saturation on the Niangua River:

Total Number Of Contacts ? 187
Total Arrests ? 33
Personal Floatation Device Violations ? 5

Minor In Possession Violations ? 5
Possession Of Glass Container Violation ? 1
