Hull: 3/16” steel hull (except the bow, which is ¼” thick), flat bottom, scow design, 6” keels (3 total: one 31’4” long in the center, two 5’ keels adjacent/parallel at the stern); the boat’s overall length is ~81’ (this includes the hull, sternwheel, fantail, rear/monkey rudders, and the bow stage); the hull itself is ~57’ long, ~33” deep, with a ~13’5” beam. Draft is ~16”. Hull weight estimated to be 14 tons.
Paddlewheel: 10’ diameter x 9’ wide; 12 stainless steel buckets, 16” wide, herringbone/vee design with beveled edges.
Engine: Detroit Diesel 453T (Model 5047-5340, Serial No. 4D-192895), supercharged, turbocharged. Engine displacement = 212 cubic inches, producing ~220 horsepower. Engine cooling is via raw water-supplied heat exchanger/engine closed loop antifreeze system. The transmission and differential are also cooled with the raw water system.
Drive Train: Allison 4-speed automatic transmission to a Ford 9” rear end/differential, with transverse drive shafts powering two 9” pinion gears, coupled by #120 roller chains to two 30” gears on each side of the paddlewheel shaft.
Steering: Helm wheel via gear/chain to a horizontal shaft, connecting to gear/chain in the engine room, to 2 flanking rudders forward of the wheel and 2 monkey rudders aft of it. Flanking rudders are geared directly, monkey rudders are operated by cables over pulleys.
Superstructure: Wood construction, cedar exterior siding, painted. Lower level: knotty pine walls, oak flooring in salon, carpet in head and captain’s quarters; salon with entertainment center, futon, chairs; full galley and dinette, LP stove/oven, LP wall furnace, 3-way (AC, DC, LP) refrigerator; head with macerator toilet, sink and shower; captain’s quarters; and the engine/mechanical room. Upper level/Pilothouse: accessible via exterior or interior ladders; cedar walls, carpeted throughout; helm and controls, a second head with a macerator toilet and sink; safety equipment, and a spacious Texas deck with deck furniture, grill, and propane locker.
Miscellaneous: 12V DC and 125V/250V AC electrical systems; Kubota 6500 30-amp diesel generator; 50- amp shore power; two 80-gallon bow fuel tanks; two 40-gallon potable water tanks, 12-gallon electric hot water heater; 3 window air conditioners, 11’ winch-operated stage, weather station. All electronics (marine transceiver, GPS/chart plotter, depth finder, stereo, entertainment system), air conditioners and refrigerator were upgraded at/since time of purchase.
From October 2016 to November 2018 the boat was hauled out for a major overhaul. The existing steel hull and original wood hull were removed and a new steel hull was fabricated. All major systems were replaced, including: DC and AC wiring and controls; potable water pumps and plumbing; holding tank and all related plumbing, pump-outs, pumps), propane lines and controls, flooring (oak flooring in main cabin, new carpeting elsewhere); fuel tanks, lines, manifold, and gauges; bilge pumps, etc.

Narrative: The boat was built in 1937 at Zanesville, Ohio as a wooden hull single deck gambling boat. It was later used as a houseboat. In the 1970’s/80’s a series of modifications were made, including the addition of a steel hull (which extended past the original wood hull, adding space for the engine/mechanical room and forward deck), propulsion converted from a screw to the diesel-powered sternwheel, and the addition of the stage and pilothouse.
Previous known boat names/owners (chronologically from the late ‘70’s to 2011): The Escape/Jim Ward, Ole Wood/Woody Roberts, Nancy Ann/Floyd and Nancy Drake.
Roger and Barbara Giles purchased the paddleboat in the summer of 2011. At the conclusion of the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival that September, they sailed the boat from Marietta, OH to their home port on the Missouri River, an 1175 mile/28-day trip. The boat was rechristened the Joseph M. LaBarge on May 20, 2012, in honor of the man universally recognized as the best steamboat captain ever on the Missouri River, who was also a distant relative of Barbara’s. The boat averages 400-500 cruising miles each year on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. It has the distinction of being the only operational sternwheel paddleboat now on the Missouri River.

1964 Starcraft 16’ Electric Boat
For sale is my 1964 Starcraft Seamist 16’ aluminum boat which I converted to electric. I swapped the 35HP Mercury for a 3HP equivalent EPropulsion electric motor with remote steer and throttle. It has 0 hours on it since repowering, and I have not even put it in the water yet. (I have dry run all the systems to check for function) I am selling as I need the money (and space in my garage) for a kitchen remodel I’m getting ready to start. I rewired the horn, lights, (all converted to LED) bilge pump, and fish finder to work off of a 12v rechargeable battery, plus I am including a 12v trolling motor as a backup in case the main motor runs out of juice in the middle of the lake. The boat comes with a Bimini top frame, but it needs new canvas. The only problem with the boat is the driver’s seat bottom cushion needs to be re-covered. (I just keep a towel over it) The trailer probably needs new wheel bearings, and the axle needs to be repositioned to correct the tongue weight, since I removed the outboard motor, battery, and fuel tank, all from the stern. I’m asking $2500 obo.
