Our River Pictures and e-mail of the Day.........
are from Gary and Judy
Meinershagen when they were in Key West last week.
River Bill,
Hello again from Key West. When we were out deep sea fishing the other day, we found the "Barbara Ann" in the Harbor. Barbara Ann was the former boat of Danny and Barbara Wagner from St. Charles, Missouri. It still has "Port of St. Louis" on the back. What a thrill to see it down here in Key West. We went back to the harbor today and met Captain Wally, the present owner, and got aboard for a tour.
Attached are the pics we took.

The
River Pictures on this Day
In 2005 ----Friday----
were
sent by two different boaters just a few days apart from each
other. Harry Ragland, who had Monday's pic of the day, sent me the
top picture and Robert "Slow Ride" Cope sent in the bottom
picture.
I think that the two pictures really compliment each other because Harry's is a
great shot of a large area the
river, the fall colors and the bluffs with Principia College on
top.......And.......Robert's picture is of the same area, only a
unique close-up shot of one of the rock formations that sort of lines
up with the steeple in the picture.

Winterization........
Unfortunately, the boating season is winding down and it is time to start thinking about winterizing. Winterizing your engine is the most important maintenance duty a boater can perform. All winterizations should include antifreeze to protect your engine from corrosion. All winterizations at
John’s Boat Harbor include antifreeze, fogging oil and stabilizer. Prices start at $150.00. Call (636) 946-2073 for an appointment.
Now is the time to address any mechanical problems that you might suspect. Our labor rate is $65.00/hr. Call the office at (636) 946-2073 for an appointment.

Corps
waives day use fees for Vets on Veterans Day
St.
Louis, Mo. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will
waive day use fees for veterans, active, reserve and guard service members and
their families at its recreation areas in the St. Louis District and
nationwide on Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11.
"Our intent is to honor and support the men and women who have served
our nation in the armed services," Major General Don T. Riley, the
Corps’ Director of Civil Works, said. "We chose this occasion to
encourage our veterans and those on active duty to enjoy our parks and realize
the benefits of outdoor recreation activities."
On November 11, day use fees will be waived for veterans, active, reserve
and guard service members and their families visiting Corps-managed recreation
areas. This waiver includes boat launch ramp and swim beach fees. However,
fees for camping and camping related services as well as fees for specialized
facilities, such as picnic shelters, will not be waived.
The Corps is one of the largest providers of outdoor recreation, operating
2,625 recreation areas at 423 projects (mostly lakes) and leasing an
additional 1,867 sites to state or local park and recreation authorities or
private interests.
The Corps hosts about 371 million
visits each year at its lakes, beaches and other areas, and estimates that 25
million Americans (one in ten) visit a Corps project at least once a year to
recreate. Of those totals, 16 million visits were hosted in the St. Louis
District last year alone.

Fall Colors Predictions......Missouri Department of Conservation foresters
update "Fall Color" reports weekly from mid-September through early-November.
According to the Missouri Department of Conservation
website this past
weekend was the peak of fall colors for the St. Louis area. Since the
area had it's first official freeze and some high winds for several days......
most all of the of the early fall colored leaves are off the trees.
However, many species of the oak trees are now turning from green to a variety
of red, orange and yellow colors. This show should last for a few weeks unless
we get some high winds or hard rains that would knock the leaves off the
trees.
MDC predicts several weeks of good fall colors for the St.
Louis area yet !

Lock
and Dam 15 spans the Mississippi River between Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois.
It's 1,203 feet long......and the largest roller dam in the world with
eleven roller gates. Lock
and Dam 15 is unusual because it:
-
Is
made up of only roller gates
-
It
has different sizes and types of roller gates
-
It is not perpendicular to the flow of the river
-
it
is one of the few facilities that has a completed auxiliary lock.
