Karen Halley Has Passed Away.....
Karen
L Halley (nee Forister) was called by God to take a walk on the
stairway to Heaven on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 9:24am after
her extensive battle with cancer. Karen was preceded on her walk
by her father, Robert E Forister. Karen waits for others left to
continue their paths on Earth. She was the loving wife of
Michael (Mike) Halley, cherished daughter of Jacqueline Forister
(nee Tappel), sisters Mary Kay Hermeyer (Rick), Pamela Kelley
(Kevin), brother Robert Forister Jr (Kim). Karen was the devoted
mother of son Jimmy Nix Jr, daughter Jaime Smith, son Cory Nix,
Grandmother of Cory Nix Jr, Libby Nix, Liam Nix, Addy Nix, Erin
Hannon, Marty Smith, Lexi Nix, Austin Nix. Karen was also
stepmother to Crystal Hicks (nee Halley) and several more
grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Karen now has her wings
and there's a new angel and a bright new star in Heaven.
Karen loved her life with Mike and all
the great friends she made. She always made people smile and
everyone loved her warm and caring heart. It’s not the years in
the life that matter, it’s the life in the years, and Karen’s
life with Mike was filled with joy, fun, family, friends and
excitement. She loved the river life Mike introduced her to, and
even bought her own boat. Karen was affectionately given the
nickname of "Minnie" by her river friends, due to the high pitch
of her voice when she was having fun. She had a special drink at
the Yacht Club where we'd always get lunch or dinner when at our
boat. Her drink has been named for her in her honor at the club
and will now be called the "Minnie", a Malibu and water with a
splash of cranberry. When at "The Yacht Club Of St Louis" ask
for a "Minnie" in her honor. Karen loved working out to stay
fit, and doing yoga with her yoga buddies, and going to
breakfast afterward with a few of them. She really loved going
to Yoga and talked highly of her instructor, Dawn, and the many
different workouts she came up with. Karen will be missed by
many and was loved by even more and will never be forgotten.
With all our love our sweet angel, until we see you again when
we take that walk on the stairway to Heaven.
Arrangements for Karen Halley will be at
St Charles Memorial Gardens / Baue at 3950 West Clay near Cave
Springs Rd in St Charles, MO. Visitation will be on Saturday,
March 25th from 10:30am to 11:30am with a service immediately
following, 11:30am to 12:30pm. A celebration of life will be
announced at a later date.
Mike and Karen Halley hail out of the
"Yacht Club of St Louis" in the boat "Over Exposed".
Memorials can be made in Karen Halley's
name to the “Karen Weidinger Foundation” @

Remembering Ron!
Ron was one of my first acquaintances and friend in 1994 at
the time I first became a DCYC member.
I know in the archives of my pictures and memories there are
many good times to be embraced, cherished and forever
remembered. One especially memorable experiences was a
Fourth of July three day round trip excursion to the St.
Louis Arch around 1996 and many more good times followed.
Ron in his boating prime was a rambunctious and extra
ordinary lover of the river and his friends within our river
community. He was a member of DCYC and CTYC. I can attest to
the fact that he revered his affiliation with these
organizations. I recall on many occasions Ron to be lively
and boldly expressive. All an expression of his love for
life and the good times he held dear with the people near
and dear to him! I'll remember Ron to be full of life and a
smile we'll always cherious.
Ron, you'll be missed But forever remembered!
Sincerely!

aptly named yacht "Scoundrel" but he could be found
anywhere, anytime. From doing the Great Loop to boating in
the middle of winter. Dutch lead the Blessing of the Fleet
Boat Parade for many years, always with impeccable timing
arriving at the Shrine. Multi-faceted, as he was also
involved in the automobile business, motorcycles, including
a world land speed record motorcycle and the annual Kyle
Petty Charity Ride Across America. Most of all he was a
great friend, generous to a fault and will be sorely missed
by all that had the pleasure of meeting him. In lieu of
flowers donations to the Blessing of the Fleet or a local
charity of your choice in his name. Our prayers and
condolences go out to the Hauhe family. Arrangements are as
follows:
Visitation: Sunday February 25th from 4 PM to 8 PM at

Gerald "Jerry" Simon
has
passed away
Dear RiverBill,
I'm requesting your assistance in
helping to spread the Visitation and
Funeral Arrangements on RiverBills for
my Dad, Gerald "Jerry" Simon, who passed
away this past Saturday, July 5th.
Known
as Jerry, "the Mechanic", in the boating
community. Dad was a lifetime marine
mechanic in the area for 50+ years,
having started at the Family
Marina/Venetian Harbor, as a child. He
completed his first valve job at the
young age of 16. He was a lifelong river
friend and a book of mechanical
knowledge on boat motors, generators and
electrical components. He was also a
trusted advisor on boat issues to many
area boaters. He, alongside his father,
William, and brother, Kenneth, started
Venetian Harbor on the family farm
ground in Portage Des Sioux, MO during
the 1940's. Dad was instrumental in
making it one of the premier
full-service marinas on the Alton Pool
during the boating boom of the 60's &
70's. Although ownership left the family
in 1969, Dad continued working at
Venetian Harbor as a mechanic after
having served in the United States Coast
Guard. He later left after purchasing
Portage Repair Service in Portage Des
Sioux, acting as owner and auto/boat
mechanic. After selling his business to
Mark Warner, he became the general
manager/head mechanic for Anchor Marine
of St. Louis, Ltd. (Known now as Port
Charles Harbor) under the ownership of
Tom & Marilyn Kirgin. After the business
was sold in the late 90's, Dad opened
and operated Marine Technology near his
home in Portage Des Sioux until cancer
caused his health to fail, forcing him
to close the business last fall. I had
the pleasure of working alongside Dad
the past 4-5 years in the local marinas
and meeting many wonderful fellow
boaters. He will be missed by many.
I have attached a link for the
visitation arrangements at Baue Funeral
Home on Jefferson St. in St. Charles on
July 8th & funeral/burial at St. Francis
of Assisi Catholic Church and Cemetery
in Portage Des Sioux on July 9th. I've
also attached a few pics of Dad. I truly
appreciate your help in notifying our
fellow boaters and friends of his
passing. Thank you, RiverBills!
Sincerely,
William "Bill" Simon

Jean Dorshorst has
passed
Bill,
Although
I have not been on the river over the
past year, I hope to return soon. I
would, however, like to let my river
friends know of the passing of my
beloved mother, Jean Dorshorst, who
became a "river rat" on her visits here
to St. Louis on the J-Crew. She was
always excited to come during boating
season over the many years, being a
member of the crew for both the "Teresa
J" and the "J-Crew". She loved being on
the water!
Mom passed away peacefully at the age of
83 years young. It was a very unexpected
passing and we are truly devastated by
her loss. My mother has generously
donated her body to science in the hope
of helping her family and anyone who may
battle the disease of Lupus. A Memorial
Gathering and Service will be held on
March 29th at Ziegenhein & Sons Funeral
Home, 4830 Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis,
63129 from 9 a.m. until noon. Donations
may be made in her honor to the Lupus
Foundation, Gateway Chapter, St. Louis.
To my boating friends who have called
and written, thank you for your sympathy
and outpouring of support. It has been
genuinely appreciated.

Kathleen Ann Lundeen Flippo, 4/1/42 -
3/11/14
Author of "Tow
Takin"
Kathleen
(Kathy) Ann Lundeen made her entrance
into this world 4/1/42 on Beaver Island
to her proud parents, Florence Carlson
and Adrian Charles Lundeen. Starting her
life on Beaver Island turned out to set
the precedence to what she became
passionate about: Life on the
Mississippi River and all it
encompassed. Born a River Rat, Kathy
enjoyed all that the river had to offer
from hunting, fishing and trapping, to
canoeing through the back waters, to
taking pictures of wildlife and river
traffic. Her love of the River
culminated with her marriage to W.P.
(Pat) Flippo in 1981 that set her
adventure for the River as the wife of a
tow boat captain.
During high school, Kathy kept to her
roots by working her summers and
holidays at Sportsman Exchange in
Clinton. After graduating from Clinton
HS, Class of 1960, she attended
Minnesota Bible College in Minneapolis
and worked at Dayton’s. From there she
came back to Clinton and worked at the
Clinton Telephone Company where she
later met her husband, Bob Keding, and
in 1968 packed her bags to follow him to
his new job in Denver CO where their
first daughter, Kjersten, was born a
year later
|
Kathy was a contributor to RiverBills in the early days of the
website. She sent us pictures and news reports from the Clinton,
Iowa area, she was an outspoken person about things on the river
and was a wealth of river information. Kathy always gave
me a hard time because I would vacation in sunny Jamaica instead
of going someplace nice and cold.
I never met Kathy in person, but she became a good internet
friend of mine.
We will miss you Kathy !

Kenneth W. Simon Has Passed Away

Dear RiverBill,
I'm asking for your assistance in helping to spread the Funeral
Arrangements on RiverBills for my Uncle, Kenneth W. Simon who
passed away on Labor Day.
Most knew him as "Kenny" or "Ken". He was a Lifetime Boater in
the area, a model Boat Enthusiast, a Longtime River Friend to
Many, and a walking World Book of Knowledge on Boating, Parts &
Boats in General. He, along with his Father & Brother, started
Venetian Harbor on the family farm ground in Portage Des Sioux,
MO in the 1940's and was instrumental in making it one of the
premier Full-Service Marinas in the Alton Pool during the
Boating Boom of the 60's & 70's. Although Ownership left the
family in 1969, Kenny continued working at Venetian. He left
there for several years to manage Two Rivers Marina in
Louisiana, MO all while continuing to live & boat in the local
area. He returned to manage Universal Marine Corporation, which
was a Wholesale Boat Part Warehouse business within Venetian
Harbor, for many years during the 80's & early 90's. He then
worked in the Parts Division at St. Charles Boat & Motor until
his retirement. He mostly boated out of Venetian Harbor &
Woodland Marina in their boats named "Nauti-K". I've attached a
link for the funeral arrangements at Baue Funeral Home & St.
Cletus Catholic Church. I've also attached a few pics from my
last boat ride with him and my father on September 30th, 2010 in
his final boat, a 55' Chris Craft Roamer named "Nauti-K", when
we took a short sea trial/test ride out of Woodland. There is
also 1 pic of some of his boats from over his boating filled
life. He later sold this boat, just earlier this year, at the
young age of 80. I very much appreciate your help in notifying
his fellow Boaters & Friends of his Passing on behalf of his
family and my father, Gerald "Jerry" Simon, who is another
lifetime river mechanic in the boating community. Thank you
RiverBills!
Sincerely,
William "Bill" Simon

Captain Larry Walker 1951 - 2010........
Good Morning Bill,
We
just received some tragic news from the high
seas in the British Virgin Islands. Jan and Joe
are vacationing with Captain Larry Walker and
other friends in the British Virgin Islands.
Yesterday morning,
Captain Larry Walker suffered a massive heart
attack while diving. Despite all efforts, they
were unable to revive him. In Joe and Jan's
absence, I am trying to make sure everyone knows
and you were the first person I thought of. I
know he was a beloved friend of many boaters on
the river.
Jan and Joe are
working with the British Embassy to return Larry
home to Oriental, North Carolina. In the
meantime, I thought it would be helpful for you
to have the attached a link to the Town Dock -
the local paper in Oriental, North Carolina,
Larry's home town.
When I receive more news from Joe and Jan, I
will let you know.

My
friend Pat and a note of gratitude for Thanksgiving
We all go through life and hopefully have the
opportunity to carve out some friendships that we hold dear and near to our
hearts. The inter-circle of friends, the top of the list, the ones you look
forward to being with and go on vacations with. The type of friend you call
when you have great news and sad news to share. The reason why I bring this
up to you is because I recently lost such a friend. His name was Pat.
I first met Pat nearly 30 years ago when I first started in the coin-op
industry full-time after finishing college. He was one of those game room
operators that popped up in the early 80's. He later got out of the
business, but from the moment I met Pat he and I became best of friends. Pat
went on to do a handful of careers since then that included insurance,
teaching, truck driving, and industrial sales. Whatever he was doing he made
the best of it and always had a great attitude.
Pat was one of those guys that once he walked in to the room the whole room
lit up and everyone couldn't but have a great attitude. He had an infectious
smile, a bolstering laugh, and always had a story to share. Pat had the
ability to put anyone at ease and often made himself the brunt of his jokes.
He loved to give everyone a nickname and it was a clear sign that should you
be awarded of such a name that he really liked you.
Pat was out delivering a drum of product off to one of his customers a
little over a week ago and fell over from a fatal heart attack. He left
behind a great lady (his wife Bev) and two grown kids that looked up to
their dad with great respect and love. Yes, it was sudden. No signs. It was
just his time.
He worked hard, but was a man of leisure. He loved camping and in his later
years really took to boating. Living in Illinois near St. Louis, he had a
nice boat that kept on the Mississippi. Both Bev and Pat loved to spend all
of their free time on the boat together. It was a way of life for them and
I'm not sure they spent a single weekend at home this entire past boating
season.
I share this at our time of Thanksgiving, because I am ever so grateful to
have had Pat in my life. He was one of the most important people to me and
this was the first time I had lost someone from my inner-circle (other than
a family member). I often find myself in moments of deep sadness and know
that this will pass. I need to enjoy this moment and forever keep it in my
heart. What is amazing is that it had not been for this crazy industry, I
would have never met Pat...

Sandi Hampel passed away Friday
Bill,
Sandi Hampel passed away Friday. She was a dear friend of mine and
her and her husband has been on the river forever. I don’t know
about the arrangements and I know the family is very private about
such matter however, I must let everyone know what she meant to me.
All the painting on the wall at Cedar Hill was done by Sandi Hampel.
Dear Sandi,
You will never know how if feel about you. You always made us feel
great, the first time I was at Lake Center at the big Labor Day
party you came up when we knew no one and made us feel welcome. You
for the first women that spoke to me when we all anchor out in mason
shut. You are the first to show my son boobs. He is 28 today and
still talks about how good they are and you gave him peso in Mexico.
We anchored out and laughed and laughed. We have road tripped and
laughed and laughed. You taught me how to dit’s on a boat. You just
move stuff around. You gave me a great dance partner at the lake
that everyone talked about the next day, then we won Sloppy Joe’s.
Image that. You taught me how to dress the way I feel. Always good
and gaudy. But you always pulled it off so much better than me. I
can never tell you how much I loved you, how much I respected you.
How much I wanted to be like you. How good a friend you were. God
broke the mold when he made you. There will never be a more kind and
loving person on this earth. May you Rest in peace. You will be
missed every day.

Larry and Debbie Mahr
LARRY MAHR
Lost his the battle with
prostate cancer this morning.
Larry loved the river and everyone on it. As his sister
I called him the river rat
He started with a little bass boat he named the
fishermarina cramming his
now past parents, wife , and 5 kids and me. To cruise
and fish the old Mississippi.
We looked like refugee's all cramed in there crossing
the might banks.
As the kids grew older he graduated into bigger boats my
favorite the Z-Boat a black and white Crownliner.
He found his nitch of land at then Surfside Marina/ now
Eagles Landing and put down his trailer, built a dock
and it became his second home and the people at the
river became his second family.
He lived his life for the summers to start to hit the
sun and fun of the river, hit the sandbars, pull out the
coolers and settle in to entertain his friends.
Ironic that he should pass on the start of Memorial Day
weekend. The start of summer.
He would spend most of his days and nights up there all
summer. Him and his wife Debbie where alwaysready to
party, to see old friends, and make new friends.
I as his sister was up there often and just in the past
2 years thankfully had the pleasure of sharing more of
his life and getting to know and love the river like he
did. For I finally had a boat.
I got to know his friends I am known as Larry's little
sister to most.
I cannot imagine the sandbar are the river without Larry
causing trouble by trying to make people laugh. To all
his fellow river rats I want you to thank you for the
prayers and thoughts through his battle. Him and Deb
loved you all and all the good times. On Larry's Party
Barge.
He is at peace
and pain free now and he would want to say.
Happy Memorial Day Dawgs Party On.

Mark Bertsch 1959 - 2008
With
Deepest Sympathy........
Thursday afternoon long time River boater Mark
Bertsch lost his battle. Mark first began boating on the River in
1980 with a small group of fraternity brothers. In those early years
it was difficult for the financially strapped college students to
keep their old boats operating, but with continued effort and
river-rat ingenuity the group of friends was always able to get at
least one of the boats in working condition to enjoy each summer
weekend.
Throughout the years Mark had an affinity for “West Coast Boats”,
owning boats from such recognizable manufacturers as Advantage,
Eliminator, Marlin, and Sleek Craft, all with enormous horsepower.
Given his love for horsepower, Mark often volunteered as a patrol
boat during drag boat races on Creve Coeur Lake , and in Litchfield
Illinois . Although the River was always home, Mark was often seen
on the waters of Kentucky Lake , Lake Norfolk , Bull Shoals, and
Table Rock. Occasionally taking his boat on its own bottom from the
Alton Pool down to Kentucky Lake , and then on to Nashville .
Mark was a very giving person, always willing to help out a friend
with a boating p rob lem, or as an attorney entertain a request for
free legal advice. While boating was his first love, Mark also
enjoyed softball, trap shooting, and Cardinal Baseball. Mark was
preceded in death by his mother, and is survived by his father
Philip and stepmother Ana.
Mark, you will be missed but not forgotten, may the good Lord be a
shining beacon on your cruise to heaven.

Hey there Bill its Mark from the
Duck Club.. Kensey's sister has passed. She was diagnosed with leukemia on
June 1st 2006.
The following was posted on Her
Caringbridge website by her husband Joe.
Jessica Ellen Inchiostro passed
away Thursday November 6th at 4:49 pm. I want everyone to know that it
happened in our living room and was peaceful, painless, and she was
surrounded by family, which was exactly the way she wanted it to be. Just
like everything Jessica did it was exactly the way it should be. We have no
regrets. We met this fate on our own terms and took control of the
uncontrollable. Even though my heart is broken I have solace in the fact
that she is now in at peace. No one earned it more than she did. Thank you
with all that I am for supporting us and being a part of the struggle. It
made a horrible situation that much less horrible and has given me a new
born sense of how good people really are and how much we can accomplish when
we come together. Jessica's spirit lives on in the bonds of friendship we
have forged. It is now up to us to continue her work.

Deepest Sympathy........
Bob Nuelle Has Passed
Away.
One of our boating
friends, Bob Nuelle, who most recently boated out of Yacht Club of St. Louis
in the boat "Manhattan" passed away after a relatively short battle with
cancer.
Funeral arrangements are pending but will probably be up here at Kutis and
then Jefferson Barracks.
For those of you that maybe don't know, Bob had a rapidly spreading cancer
that was discovered after a traffic accident. He also contracted a staph
infection while in the hospital there in Del Ray Beach Florida where he was
living. He coped with both surprisingly well, to the point of coming back to
St. Louis to buy a car and then driving back to Del Ray Beach by himself.
Unfortunately the staph infection kicked back in, he went back in to the
hospital in Florida, went into Hospice care and died all within a few days.
Faye and John Marnatti had just visited with him this morning.
Please excuse me if some of my facts are not 100% correct, just wanted those
of you that didn't know already a little background. I will email you all as
soon as I get the funeral arrangements.
Sorry to convey such sad news, our condolences to Bob's family and friends.
