Water Patrol Advises Swimmers Of Aquatic Dangers........
So far this year,
more than thirty people have drowned in Missouri waterways. By this
time in 2009, only 16 had perished from drowning. Sergeant Jerry
Callahan of the Missouri State Water Patrol is quick to say that
these numbers tend to fluctuate, on account of heat and flooding.
Attempted rescues are yet another cause of drownings. Callahan
warns that a rescuer must remember that the person in distress is
panicking, and one must keep some distance from the victim, by
throwing a rope, extending a paddle, or shoving a raft toward the
victim........

21.3% and PWCs fell by 11.8%. The bright spot was aluminum boat

The
Separation Of Carp And Lake
Groups Are Looking At
Mississippi River - Great Lakes Separation.........
Thursday,
representatives of Great Lakes states and cities began a $2 million
study to determine the best course of action on severing the link
between the Mississippi River Basin and the Great Lakes. The
project is expected to take 18 months. The executive director of
the Great Lakes Commission, Tim Eder, stated that the only way to
permanently protect against invasive species is ecological
separation of the Lakes from the River Basin. Anything shy of that
is likely to fail........

Mississippi And Illinois Rivers
Flooding Along The Mississippi River Not Caused By Dams........
When most
people think of dams, they think of flood control, or water
storage. The dams along the Mississippi River offer no flood
control capacity, as water would simply go over or under the
dam. Dams on the Mississippi are intended to maintain a 9 foot
deep navigation channel. The Illinois River uses a system of
wicket dams to slow down the water flow. Wicket dams are really
just panels that are installed on the river bottom........

Boat Gas Prices Holding....For Now....
The wholesale price of
gas inched higher Thursday, meaning that Lake boaters may want to fill up
the tanks before heading home this weekend. Local marinas will be holding
their prices steady. It has been reported that retail gas prices will jump
up as much as a nickel over the next few days. Boaters should see prices
around $3.03 - $3.19. By land, gas prices are around $2.499 -

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop
Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update.......
Day 229 and 230
07/23/2010
Daily Stats
Start: 5:30 AM - Port Hope, MI (Huron County Campground)
Finish 1:15 PM - Caseville, MI (Sleeper State Park)
Time: 7:45 hours
Daily dist: 29 miles
Total dist: 4200+
Companions: None
Weather: Partly cloudy with highs in the 80’s wind light and variable.
Notes: Had considered crossing the bay but went with plan B
Anybody who has been reading this blog for a while, or who is a kayaker
themselves, knows that the weather is the force that steers me more than
anything. Today held weather that was about as perfect for paddling as you
can find. Calm winds, moderate temperatures, and a few clouds. With that I
was making great time rounding the top of the thumb of Michigan. --
Everybody around here calls it “The Thumb” even the NOAA marine weather
forecasts -- I knew from the marine radio that the weather was supposed to
turn for the worst tomorrow, meaning that for the next couple days this may
be the best weather to do the crossing. With that in mind I was considering
crossing Saginaw Bay (a crossing of about 15 miles or so) today. However, I
wanted to get far enough into the bay to make the crossing a bit shorter
before I started across. That would mean about 30 miles of paddling BEFORE
starting a 15 mile crossing. That’s a lot of paddling.

Loose
Boat Dock..........
Hi Bill:
I was on Enterprise Beach yesterday afternoon via Jet Ski with some
of the gang. We were watching the clouds approaching and like all
good river rats, we waited till the last minute, hoping the rain
would pass by. No such luck. I hopped on my Jet Ski and cut thru the
Enterprise-521 Chute trying to scamper off to my temporary dockage
at Yacht Club. It started raining harder and I still had almost 2
miles to go when I realized…Hey, I boat out of Eagles Landing and
have a dock there! So there I went. As I was approaching the lower
end of Eagles, I saw a boat dock leaving the slough. I thought to
myself that this is surely a strange time to be moving a dock. I
looked for a john boat that would usually steer a dock but didn’t
see one. I didn’t see anyone actually. The dock had broke loose I
assume from lower Eagles Landing Slough. The dock did have 2 BBQ
pits on it but I did not see any other markings on it. At any rate,
it was really starting to pour so I bee lined to my dock at Eagles.
There wasn’t much I could do for that dock on a Jet Ski. It poured
for about an hour.
Bottom line is I don’t know whose dock took off on them but it
happened about 5:30pm Wednesday. Good luck trying to recover it. I’m
sure someone down river will appreciate their new dock. Or if they
read this on your website, they know where it came from and can try
to get it back to its rightful owner.
See you on the river!
Thanks...
Ernie Moretti
