Update
The
Admiral's Final Journey Delayed By River
Levels........
The crews have
finished stripping the top off of the Admiral,
and at this point, she could pass below the
Merchants Bridge to start her final voyage. The
problem is that her final destination is Azcon
Corporation's scrap yard in Alton, Illinois, and
the Alton Pool is too low. Currently, the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers is lowering the level of
the Alton Pool in anticipation of the spring
flooding. The Admiral's owners are hoping for a
window of opportunity to move her, otherwise,
she may be stuck until September........

John and his wife had
been River Rats for 55 years. Their boats named

They raised five

At St. Louis, Missouri
Body Found On Riverfront Has Been Identified........
The body
found last week in the Mississippi River has been identified as
Vickie Smith of Cahokia, Illinois. Her body was found between
two barges, just south of Chouteau Avenue. The police say that
they have been looking for Smith since December 7. She was
last seen leaving Lumiere Place casino. Authorities say there
are no signs of trauma to her body, but they have not determined
the cause of death........

At Hannibal, Missouri
River At Hannibal Has Reached Flood Stage........
Tuesday
afternoon, the Mississippi River was over the technical flood
stage of 16 feet, and the question remains: How high will the
River go? It is believed that the River will crest at 17.8 feet
early Monday, and is should begin to recede by Wednesday. These
levels will not require the installation of Hannibal's flood
gates. At this time, the National Weather Service has issued a
flood warning for Cantor and Quincy, Illinois, as well as
Clarksville, Hannibal, Louisiana, Saverton and Winfield
Missouri........

Dubuque Begins To Install HESCO Barriers........
Wednesday,
Dubuque city workers were trained by representatives of the
HESCO company on the installation of the HESCO flood barrier
system. Dubuque had spent $300,000 to buy 10,000 feet of the
barrier for protection against the River. The barriers can be
set up rapidly, and filled by machines. They also take up less
space than sand bags, and are reusable. The first HESCO barrier
was set up at a power station for Dubuque's water wells........

Flood of 1973
The Mississippi River, at St. Louis, reached it's peak flood level during
the record breaking 77 day flood.
The extended flood caused more than $1 billion in damages and 33 deaths.
The cause of the 1973 flood is attributed to above average rain fall that
started in October 1972 in the river basins that feed river. More than
normal amouts of water flowed down the river throughout the winter, setting
the stage for major flooding when the March rains started.
Most of the Midwest was already saturated, the Mighty Mississippi began
rising and inundating communities along the river. The worst came in early
April when many levees failed south of St. Louis and the river claimed 6
million acres of ground......

Spring
serves walleye on the rocks
 KANSAS
CITY Mo -- A toothy fish with glassy eyes is about to tempt
anglers who don’t mind hopping from rock to rock in the dark.
Walleye spawn at night in rocky areas during early spring,
primarily during the first two weeks of April in the Kansas City
region. For lakes without major stream inflows, walleye move
from deep water into the shallows where lots of rock is present,
such as the rip rap on the face of dams.
The fish often ignore anglers’ lures because they’re intent on
spawning and they are not actively feeding. But sometimes they
do strike a lure or bait and the catch is often a mature,
trophy-sized fish.
That’s why from now into mid-April you’ll see anglers making
their way along the sometimes challenging footing on rip rap at
places such as the Smithville Lake dam. On some nights you’ll
also see a boat with Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC)
fishery biologists who are conducting walleye population studies
while the fish are in the shallows.
“Last year our highest catch rate was during the first and
second week of April,” said Scott Ryan, the fishery biologist
for Smithville Lake. “Our catch rates averaged 400 fish per
hour.”
There are also similar walleye spawning runs on dams in the
Kansas City area at Lake Jacomo and Longview Lake. In northwest
Missouri, walleye runs occur on Mozingo Lake and Bilby Ranch
Lake in the Maryville area. While the walleye make spawning
runs, their presence in good numbers in the lakes are due to
ongoing stocking by MDC.

stated that a letter he penned to Illinois Governor Pat Quinn
was not intended as a threat to move the company's
headquarters. Oberhelman added that the media sensationalized
his comments about Illinois' business climate. Governor Quinn
took the letter as an offer to work with the state. Oberhelman

The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles (www.lewisandclark.net
) is a local non-profit organization that has gained
national recognition for its historic reenactment of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition during the bicentennial of
2003-2004. Its volunteers remain active as historic
reenactors, educating children and families throughout
the country, as well as telling the story of westward
expansion at the Lewis and Clark Museum and Boathouse
near Frontier Park in St. Charles. This non-profit
organization owns full size replicas of the keelboat as
well as the two pirogues used in the Expedition. They
are in the process of gaining the necessary approvals to
bring visitors out on the boats as a fund-raising effort
for the group’s activities and are currently seeking a
captain certified as an OPERATOR OF UNINSPECTED
PASSENGER VESSELS (A.K.A. SIX PAC). This would
preferably be a volunteer position for someone who loves
the river and has an interest in sharing American
History.

BoatUS Urges Boaters To Be Heard on New
EPA Requirements
Deadline for Public Comments is June 2
 ALEXANDRIA,
Va. March 30, 2011 –- Remember the Clean Boating Act of 2008?
The bi-partisan federal legislation stopped recreational boats
from falling under Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permit
requirements originally targeting “normal operating discharges”
from commercial ships. However, the Act required the EPA to
analyze recreational boat discharges and eventually mandate
“Management Practices” to address environmental concerns.
Now the Agency is asking boaters to speak up about how they
operate and maintain their boat as it moves forward developing
and eventually implementing those management practices. The
deadline for comments is June 2.
“Management Practices would be methods, techniques, or tools
which could mitigate any environmental impact of normal
discharges into our waters,” said BoatUS Vice President of
Government Affairs Margaret Podlich. “They will vary according
to boat type and what that vessel could potentially discharge.
For example, the EPA is looking at engine maintenance and could
create a management practice that requires the use of a bilge
sock to soak up oil in your engine compartment. Of course, this
couldn’t apply to a rowboat. But it’s important to understand
they are looking at all recreational watercraft.”
Continued Podlich, “BoatUS has been working with boaters for
years to help them understand how to minimize their impact while
enjoying the water. We know that boaters are strong, clean
boating advocates, and we firmly believe that any new mandatory
management practices must be based in science, and should be
practical, realistic, and economical. That’s why we need boaters
to speak out now.”
To hear boater’s concerns and suggestions, the EPA has set up
two ways to communicate:
1. Boaters can be heard at the agency’s alternative weekly
online webinars that started March 21 and end April 25. To find
out the dates and to register for these online listening
sessions go to:

2. Boaters can also email the EPA directly at CleanBoatingAct-HQ@EPA.GOV
up until June 2.
The EPA is looking at several broad categories of vessel
discharges including the use of anti-fouling paints and zincs,
grey water (from showers and sinks), bilge water (with concern
about oil and grease, which is already illegal to discharge),
the use of cleaning products, disposal of garbage and fishing
waste, and the transport of invasive species.
The Clean Boating Act law requires the EPA to consider many
factors when developing these management practices, including
the type of the discharge and its environmental affect, any
effects on operation or safety, economic costs, international
standards, and applicability to state or federal law.
The Agency also held a listening session in Annapolis, MD, which
BoatUS attended. “The EPA shared with us that they expect to use
some of the more common clean boating techniques already found
in some areas,” said Podlich. “However, no specific proposal or
required action was presented, so more details are elusive. As a
result, boaters need to stay tuned to what EPA is planning and
make their voices heard in these listening sessions.”

Senator Encourages Flood Insurance........
Monday, U.S.
Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill) encouraged Illinois residents to
consider purchasing flood insurance in light of the warnings of
potentially heavy flooding. Durbin stated that minor flooding
has begun, and he has been in contact with the Federal Emergency
Management Agency, and the Illinois Emergency Management
Agency. Both agencies said that they were taking all of the
necessary precautions. Durbin also said that the quicker that
people sign up for flood insurance, the more likely they will be
covered this spring........

For those who do not know
Missy did her best against two Pit Bulls on the steps of
her own motor home and lost.
At 4 pm today she could not fight any more and we have

Freeport, Texas
Mako Shark Decides To Take A Boat Ride........
For many
years, it has been said that things are bigger in Texas. If a
fish jumps into a boat along the Mississippi River, odds are
that it is an Asian carp, weighing perhaps 10 pounds. Monday,
off Freeport, Texas, Jason Kresse had a fish jump into his
boat. An eight foot long, 375 pound mako shark to be exact.
After their snapper fishing was complete, Kresse and his crew
dumped a few buckets of fish entrails into the water. The crew
heard loud splashes and banging on the hull sides, followed by
the shark hopping into the boat. Kresse plans to have the shark
mounted, as proof of a nearly unbelievable fish story........

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. – Crew aboard a 24-foot Special
Purpose Craft from Coast Guard Station Chincoteague
deploy oil containment boom around the fishing vessel
Captain Andrew after it had caught fire and was
extinguished by the local fire department, March 29,
2011. Although the Captain Andrew did not release any
petroleum products into the water, the Coast Guard crew
took precautionary steps to minimize potential
pollution.

to hold free introductory water quality workshop
April 9 Registration ends March 30
JEFFERSON CITY, MO, MARCH 29,
2011� Kirksville area residents interested in
learning about monitoring the health of local
streams and rivers are invited to attend a
introductory water quality monitoring workshop
on April 9.
The Missouri Stream Team will present the free
workshop, which will include six hours of
classroom instruction and up to two hours
demonstrating sampling methods at a stream, at
the Missouri Department of Conservation regional
office, 3500 S. Baltimore in Kirksville.
Participants in the workshop will learn to
evaluate stream conditions and will be given an
introduction to water chemistry.
The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5
p.m. The deadline to register is March 30. To
register for the workshop, visit

On March 17th...We lost John Patrick Brazill,81.
John and his wife had
been River Rats for 55 years. Their boats named
DIP SHIP and Principle Interest.
They raised five
wonderful children and have many grand children.

River Near Fulton, Illinois
Fulton Prepping For Floods........
City and fire
department officials in Fulton, Illinois met on Monday to
discuss their strategy in the event that flooding occurs in the
area. Fulton has sandbags prepped for the places needing
reinforcement in the event of flooding. In Fulton, there are
two permanent maintenance workers whose job it is to inspect and
maintain the levees. The U.S. Army Corps also inspects their
work at least twice per year........

At Davenport, Iowa
Floodwall May Not Be Done In Time For Floods........
For decades,
the city of Davenport, Iowa has done without a floodwall, but
now they are scrambling to complete a $11.5 million floodwall to
protect the water treatment plant. The treatment plant is the
main source of water for Davenport. Distressed by the prior
flood predictions, American Water decided to hire a contractor
to build a 2,000 foot earthen levee around three sides of the
facility, but it will not be complete for the possible flooding
this spring.......

crest at their major flood stage of 18 feet by Thursday........

Great Falls, Montana is concerned, the Missouri River started it
all. The first written record of Great Falls was by none other
than Meriwether Lewis, who on June 13, 1805 wrote in his journal

Giant Ray Leaps Onto Boat, Pins Woman........
While on a
boating excursion off of Islamorada, Florida, Jenny Hausch got
quite a surprise when a 300 pound spotted eagle ray jumped into
the boat and landed on her. Hausch tried to crawl from beneath
the ray, but it was flopping around and kept landing on her.
Eventually, the ray was returned to the water, and luckily,
Hausch did not suffer any injuries........

The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles (www.lewisandclark.net
) is a local non-profit organization that has gained
national recognition for its historic reenactment of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition during the bicentennial of
2003-2004. Its volunteers remain active as historic
reenactors, educating children and families throughout
the country, as well as telling the story of westward
expansion at the Lewis and Clark Museum and Boathouse
near Frontier Park in St. Charles. This non-profit
organization owns full size replicas of the keelboat as
well as the two pirogues used in the Expedition. They
are in the process of gaining the necessary approvals to
bring visitors out on the boats as a fund-raising effort
for the group’s activities and are currently seeking a
captain certified as an OPERATOR OF UNINSPECTED
PASSENGER VESSELS (A.K.A. SIX PAC). This would
preferably be a volunteer position for someone who loves
the river and has an interest in sharing American
History.

Just returned from a trip to Tellico Lake in Tennessee and St. James City,
Florida (on Pine Island).
I solved the dilemma of what to wear by sporting the always popular
Riverbills.com Pirate T-shirt.
Here are pics of the T-Shirt at Calhoun's Restaurant in Lenoir City on the
Tennessee River at Fort Loudon Marina. I didn't look happy but can't imagine
why!
The Riverbills Pirate shirt (apparently, the most-used piece of clothing in
my suitcase) also appears in front of Woody's Waterside Restaurant in St.
James City. (The replica of the Key West Buoy says: "Drunkenmost Point in
the Continental USA".
My son, Rich, owns a restaurant in St. James City called the Island Cow.
Only place you can get breakfast there. That's Rich and me in front of his
restaurant.
Heard about all the snow St. Louis received while I was gone. Tried to feel
badly. Couldn't. We were out boating on Pine Island Sound in 80 degree
weather!
However, I did my best to spread the "gospel" of Riverbills.com

Flood Outlook At
St. Louis, Missouri
Flooding Threat Less, But Not Gone........
The latest
flood estimates for major flooding down the Mississippi River
Valley are not as serious as originally believed, but the
National Weather Service is advising communities to remain
vigilant. National Weather Service hydrologist Mark Fuchs
stated that the anticipated crests fell by two to three feet due
to the recent warm weather up north. The thaw sent some of the
water downriver, meaning less water for later, when the flooding
season begins........

Plans are
being finalized for a monument that commemorates the three most
massive floods to hit the Riverfront at Alton, Illinois. The
monument will include information of the floods of 1844, 1973
and 1993. The memorial will be put in the coming Flood Memorial
Plaza on city property east of the ConAgra mill. There will be
a red line marking the level of the 1993 Mississippi River
Flood........

Groundbreaking For Sewer Project To Relieve Flooding........
Monday, a
groundbreaking ceremony was held in Wood River, Illinois to mark
the beginning of the sanitary sewer separation project. The
project is intended to relieve flooding by separating the storm
sewers from the sanitary sewers. Work will include the
installation of around 14,000 feet of gravity storm sewer, and
9,600 feet of storm water force main. The project will also
include the installation of three storm water pump stations and
two water detention basins........

Coast Guard begins Operation Spring Restore
CLEVELAND - The Ninth Coast Guard
District begins restoring the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence
Seaway aids to navigation system Monday following the re-opening
of the Soo Locks and St. Lawrence Seaway Friday and the
resumption of the shipping season.
Operation Spring Restore involves the re-installment of
approximately 1,263 navigational aids, including lighted and
unlighted buoys and beacons, with an expected completion date of
May 28, 2011.
The aids, which are roughly half in the region, are taken out of
service during the winter months due to decreased vessel traffic
and to minimize damage from ice and inclement weather. This is
known as Operation Fall Retrieve.

History....
29 March 1969 in River History
On March 29, 1969 a replica of Christopher Columbus' sailing
ship, the Santa Maria was moored along side the Admiral Riverboat on the
downtown St. Louis riverfront. Alfonso J. Cervantes,
former mayor of St. Louis Mayor,
acquired the ship in a bidding war with the Rockefellers. He wanted to
use it to recall the Spanish history of St. Louis.
The Santa Maria did not fit in very well with the rest of the Riverfront at
that time and quickly became the punch-line of many jokes.
On July 28, 1969, a storm caused the Santa Maria and the Becky Thatcher to
break loose from their moorings. They floated downstream and hit an
Illinois dock. The Santa Maria was damaged on her starboard side and sank.
The ship was raised and repaired.
In March of 1973 the Sana Maria She found a new home in Titusville, Florida.
In 1974 she was gutted by a fire.
Santa Maria is latin for Saint Mary

Mississippi River Reaches Major Flood Stage........
During the
past three days, the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Minnesota
has risen 5 feet, ending up just below 18 feet. It is beginning
to cover Harriet Island near St. Paul. The River is expected to
crest around 19 feet by Wednesday. Major flood stage in St.
Paul is 17 feet........

River At Vicksburg, Mississippi
Limits On Tows By Horsepower And Size........
Recently, the
U.S. Coast Guard put size and horsepower restrictions on tows
six miles on either side of the Mississippi River bridges at
Vicksburg, Mississippi. Southbound tows are limited to
operating during daylight hours, and must be pushed with a
vessel with at least 6,000 horsepower. Tows with at least 7,200
horsepower are limited to 25 barges. A master pilot with
experience handling tows around bridges during high water must
be present. Northbound tows are limited to nightime hours and
no limit on barges........

Near Yankton, South Dakota
Corps Says March Pulse Cancelled........
The U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers announced that they have cancelled the March
pulse on the Missouri River. The pulses of water from the
Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, South Dakota are intended to
mimic the natural spring rise in water levels. The rises signal
the endangered pallid sturgeon to spawn. High River flows from
the spring snowmelt already has the water levels higher. The
Corps will be keeping tabs on the River levels before deciding
if there will be a May pulse........

The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles (www.lewisandclark.net
) is a local non-profit organization that has gained
national recognition for its historic reenactment of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition during the bicentennial of
2003-2004. Its volunteers remain active as historic
reenactors, educating children and families throughout
the country, as well as telling the story of westward
expansion at the Lewis and Clark Museum and Boathouse
near Frontier Park in St. Charles. This non-profit
organization owns full size replicas of the keelboat as
well as the two pirogues used in the Expedition. They
are in the process of gaining the necessary approvals to
bring visitors out on the boats as a fund-raising effort
for the group’s activities and are currently seeking a
captain certified as an OPERATOR OF UNINSPECTED
PASSENGER VESSELS (A.K.A. SIX PAC). This would
preferably be a volunteer position for someone who loves
the river and has an interest in sharing American
History.

Life Jacket Designs Break New Ground
Competition Winners Announced
 ANNAPOLIS,
Md, March 28, 2011 – If you think that life jackets have to be
bulky, uncomfortable or hot to wear, the winners of the
“Innovation in Life Jacket Design Competition” will prove you
wrong. The BoatUS Foundation and Underwriter's Laboratory
recently announced the winners of their 2011 competition, and
you may be surprised at how much the inventive designs break new
ground.
The Competition, which began last year and was open to anyone,
asked a simple question: Can you build a better life jacket? Of
the original 35 entries (some from as far away as Malaysia), 15
semi-finalists were selected and short videos of the designs
were posted online for the public to pick their favorites, with
the focus on choosing life jackets that were more innovative,
wearable, affordable, reliable and practical. In addition,
expert judges voted for their favorite designs at the recent
International Boating and Water Safety Summit held in Savannah,
GA. The combined votes resulted in today’s three winners:
#1 The See-Tee by Float-Tech Inc.
The first place winner is the “See-Tee”, a design from Jeff Betz
of the Troy, NY based Float-Tech Inc. This isn’t Betz’s first
life jacket innovation – his company started as the result of a
graduate school project that designed the firm’s first
non-traditional inflatable life jacket based on a foul weather
coat.
The Sea-Tee is a standard rash-guard shirt that many water
sports enthusiasts are used to wearing – but with a twist. It
has a built-in inflatable bladder similar to most inflatable
life jackets. Betz is careful not to call this a life jacket
however, and simply refers to it as a buoyancy aid.
Said Betz: "The Sea-Tee is a thousand times better than
traditional life jackets for many of the activities people
engage in on the water. Most life jackets are designed to
standards that are meant for offshore conditions, but most
boaters are on calm inland waters. Jackets built to 100 percent
of the current standards – but not worn, are zero percent
effective. So with the Sea-Tee you can wear essentially the same
shirt you’re used to wearing on the water, and have the back-up
of a buoyancy aid in case of an emergency.”
The company received the $5,000 first place prize, awarded by
Underwriters Laboratories (UL), for their efforts. "UL is
honored to have been a part of the Innovation in Life Jacket
Design Competition,” said UL’s Joseph Waters. “The ability to
provide support for such an effort is consistent with our
mission to promote public safety in our homes, our communities,
and around the world. We look forward to seeing what the future
holds when today's innovation in PFDs becomes tomorrow's
reality."
#2 The Directors Bureau’s Float Coat
Second place went to the Directors Bureau, a Los Angeles based
creative consulting company that works in the film industry.
Their “Float Coat” is a windbreaker with added floatation. The
Bureau, represented by Sebastian Pardo, said his firm had never
delved into this type of project before. Pardo stated that their
guiding strategy was to design something that, "should always
work, shouldn't require action by the person wearing the jacket,
and should be fashionable.”
While not a unique design, judges felt that the distinctive
placement of the floatation, which included never-before-seen
hollow “microspheres,” or small spherical particles, along with
fashionable styling, made it stand out. The firm took home a
$1,000 prize, graciously provided by the National Safe Boating
Council.
#3 St. Thomas More High School’s Aqua Buoy
Third place went to the design team of high school seniors Josh
Jankowski and Nathan Karabon of St. Thomas More High School in
Milwaukee, WI. Their design, which marries traditional foam
floatation in a modern inflatable configuration, is a result of
their school's Pathway to Engineering curriculum that is part of
the national "Project Lead the Way" program. Jankowski and
Karabon’s interest in designing a life jacket came from learning
about the competition while doing research as part of their
senior research project.
As the youngest participants in the competition, the duo
surveyed boaters and researched designs to come up with their
prototype. Jankowski and Karabon took home a $500 prize awarded
by the BoatUS Foundation.

announced in 2012.

Mississippi River At Chain Of Rocks
Chemist Finds A Way To Clean Up The Muddy Waters........
Once upon a
time in St. Louis, the water flowing from faucets and hydrants
alike was a shade of brown similar to the Mississippi River. In
order to combat this, the City opened a new water works complete
with six mammoth settling tanks in 1894. Unfortunately, it did
not work as intended. With the 1904 Worlds Fair coming up,
officials were scrambling to find a way to make good on the
promise for clear water for the fair. Water works chemist, John
F. Wixford modified a treatment plan used in Quincy, Illinois to
get the brown out of the water. A few modifications and the
addition of disinfectants, the same basic plan is still used
today........

the Navy's ceremony, it may be headed for the scrap heap. The
Memphis Council of the U.S. Navy League is interested in
acquiring the sail of the USS Memphis in order to put it on
display. One idea is to position the ssubmarine in a park, so
that when viewed a certain way, it appears that the sub is
actually in the Mississippi River. Another option would be to
display the sub at The Children's Museum........

Flood Prep Under Way At Island City........
More than
13,000 sandbags have been filled to protect Iowa's only island
city from the flood waters of the Mississippi River. Home to
600 residents, Sabula, Iowa does not even cover two square
miles. The city is surrounded by three lakes and the
Mississippi River. Sabula is well protected from flooding to
begin with, thanks to dikes and flood pumps. However, a few
properties are at risk for flooding........

Tennessee Waters Now Safe Haven For Sturgeon........
Since the age
of the dinosaurs, sturgeon have been swimming the waters of the
world, until man discovered their eggs were a tasty delicacy.
Over the past century and a half sturgeon populations have been
on the decline. Tennessee has made efforts to preserve the
sturgeon. Lake and pallid sturgeon have been protected in
Tennessee waters, and effective March 1, 2011, the shovelnose
sturgeon was granted protection too........

Certified Six Pac Captain(s) Sought.....
The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles (www.lewisandclark.net
) is a local non-profit organization that has gained
national recognition for its historic reenactment of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition during the bicentennial of
2003-2004. Its volunteers remain active as historic
reenactors, educating children and families throughout
the country, as well as telling the story of westward
expansion at the Lewis and Clark Museum and Boathouse
near Frontier Park in St. Charles. This non-profit
organization owns full size replicas of the keelboat as
well as the two pirogues used in the Expedition. They
are in the process of gaining the necessary approvals to
bring visitors out on the boats as a fund-raising effort
for the group’s activities and are currently seeking a
captain certified as an OPERATOR OF UNINSPECTED
PASSENGER VESSELS (A.K.A. SIX PAC). This would
preferably be a volunteer position for someone who loves
the river and has an interest in sharing American
History.

Lake Of The
Ozarks
Lake Falls Three Feet In 5 Days........
The operators
of the Bagnell Dam have followed through with their intention to
lower the level of the Lake of the Ozarks to 654 feet. Over the
past 5 days, the lake dropped 3 feet, arriving at 654.7 feet
Sunday morning. The level was expected to reach 654.2 by the
end of the day. The Bagnell dam is running heavy generation,
and is flowing over 37,000 feet of water per second. This was
the most rapid Lake drawdown in recent memory........

Georgia
Georgia is a beautiful state. The intercoastal waterway is full of wildlife and
marshes with many twists and turns throughout. We did not have too many problems
with depths, although at one point we dredged through 3 feet of water while
taking an alternate route due to severe weather. This is the tightest route
we've been in and during it's widest point around 40 feet, it was rather hard to
even turn around if need be. So we plowed our way through for a short time.
There were many 'sounds' that we made our way through without a hitch and
enjoyed the short detour of twisting turning waterways and liked the fresh wind
straight-a-ways they gave us.
The winds persisted one day and we decided to find safe harbor at the Jekyll
Island Harbor Marina on Jekyll Island. The wind was fierce and about blew the
kids off the boat. Funny part was that it was still so hot out!
We really do bike everywhere we go! I took this picture while Ryann and I were
biking behind them. The terrain was fun and all part of the adventure. It seems
a lot of people bike throughout the island as bikes were not permitted on the
main roads.
I'm not using my zoom in this photo and we're not at a zoo. This is purely an
alligator in the wild, at a swamp that we happen to be biking past on our way to
town. It was an unreal feeling to be so close to him.

Missy's Dog Fight.......
Hi All
It is John and Terrie from Little Johns Marine and Little Johns
Motorsports.
There are several reasons that I am writing this note, and I
will lead into that.
I am sending this to every internet source available to me, and
may be one special person will read it. And MAYBE man enough to
say he is sorry.
First, I would like to say thank you to
all of those who have called with concern.
It will not be forgotten.
To explain to every one else just what happened, it went like
this.
Terrie, Myself, and Missy our six pound fuzzy little dog that
the whole world knows
went to spend the night at Pere Marquette and enjoy the Contrios
event.
Pere Marquette is a wonderful place, and hospitality is second
to none.
As most know, we took our motor home and stayed in Pere
Marquette camp grounds.
It is also great, and just plain pleasant if you want a quick
getaway.
The Con Trios event was awesome, and a good time was had by all.
At about 11.00 pm we made our way back from the lodge to our
motor home.
Missy was upset with us because we left her for over three hours
and maybe we used the whole pathway getting home to let her out.
At 9.00 this morning, a little behind schedule, I got up, made
coffee, and opened the door for Missy to do her normal routine.
As anyone that knows Missy, she will never go beyond 15 feet of
where we are, and did no different this time.
THAT IS WHEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE.
SOMEBODY, and I will never forget his face, was walking his two
forty pound plus dogs.
One on a small leash, and one not on a leash.
When I heard the scream and looked out, all I could see was
Missy in the air like a rag doll.
Terrie heard this and came flying from the bedroom.
By this time, I am rolling around outside with this big dog
trying to get him to let go.
Keep in mind that Terrie and I were bare footed and nothing more
than under ware and tee shirts, That is not a lot of protection.
When I got the big dog to let go, Terrie tried to pick Missy up
but the second dog got out of his leash and went after Missy AND
Terrie
The owner did nothing but say OH MY GOD OH MY GOD
I did not let go of the death grip on the big dog until Terrie
got Missy up the steps, and then I ran for dear life
Seriously speaking, there was blood every where, and we were
pretty much in shell shock.
This man collected his dogs and left, PROBABLY NEVER TO BE SEEN
AGAIN.
Terrie and I were ok but Missy was pretty much skinned like a
rabbit.
The closest care facility was either St. Charles or Collinsville
Ill.
Our trailer was left in Grafton, we still have stuff everywhere,
but Missy is out of surgery and so far so good. Another day or
two will tell the story.
What is driving me crazy is that we have five grandchildren ,
and a couple are with us 90% of the time. IS THERE ANYWHERE
SAFE???
PLEASE nobody take this wrong.
Pere Marquette, the park rangers, and several campers did
everything possible.
I sincerely thank them for that.
I sincerely hope that the owner of the two dogs was in shell
shock as bad as we were and just scarred.
If I put this on every internet connection that I have, Maybe
this person will contact me.
I ask for no restitution, but think hard about what happened,
WHAT IF IT WAS A CHILD??????
THE DOGS NAME WAS CHOMPER THE OWNER WAS SCREAMING TO PLEASE STOP
Was he talking to the dog OR ME???????????

Confluence Trash Bash River Cleanup Was Saturday........
Saturday,
volunteers braved snow flurries and cold temperatures to pick up
trash at the annual Confluence Trash Bash river cleanup at the
Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. Around 540 volunteers turned out to
clean up trash from creeks that feed the Mississippi, Missouri
and Illinois Rivers. Odd items found include a Metro employee
card, a large mirror, a sink, and a baggie of marijuana........

Caterpillar Talks Of Leaving Illinois........
Recently,
Doug Oberhelman, the chief executive of Caterpillar, sent a
letter to Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, bringing up the
possibility that the company may leave Illinois, because the
direction the state is moving in is not favorable to
businesses. Oberhelman wrote that at least four states have
tried to lure Caterpillar to re-locate to their state since
Illinois raised their income tax back in January........

Asian Carp Update
Carp Could Endanger Other River Fish........
Conservation
departments along the Mississippi River are concerned that the
amount of plankton that the silver and bighead carp are eating
may edge out native species. This could lead to a decrease in
the fish populations, as well as bring up health concerns.
Already, conservationist studies have shown that in areas with
high Asian carp populations, many of the native fish species
have lost weight........

Students Help Prepare For Flooding........
Friday, over
140 junior and high school students from Western Illinois spent
the day filling sandbags. The sandbags will help control the
Mississippi River at Andalusia, Illinois. The Rockridge School
District would be affected by flooding, and as such, the school
district was asked if they could spare some students to help out
with the sandbagging efforts. All of the students were at least
14 years old, and had their parents permission to help........

Indoor Practice Update
We have practice scheduled for
Sunday March 27th at Prarietown Lutheran School. We are a little over
a month away from getting in the water so get down here to start getting in
shape for the season as well as preparing the show for the year. It runs
from 2:30 to 4:30. Practices will include climbing, doubles, ballet
routines, boat patterns and scripting walk through's. We have a script
together and need to fill a couple of speaking parts so come to practice if
you are interested.

Midwest Flooding Outlook
New Flooding Forecast Has Been Released........
According to
the National Weather Service, parts of the Midwest should be
seeing major flooding this spring. The NWS is predicting major
flooding along the Red River, as well as the upper Mississippi
River, from St. Paul, Minnesota to St. Louis, Missouri.
Davenport, Iowa residents are getting prepared, by organizing
volunteers and filling sandbags.........

Asian Carp Update
More Voltage Needed For The Barrier........
Friday, the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a report that stated they
may need to up the voltage in order to stop the smallest
invading fish. Currently, the small carp wont be deterred by
the barrier at the present voltage. The Corps believe the
barrier will be a deterrent to carp 5.4 inches or larger, but
ineffective against fish that are 2-3 inches in length. The
good news is that the nearest place carp in the 2-3 inch size
range were netted was more than 100 miles away........

Near St. Louis County
Body Discovered Last Week Identified........
The man
discovered by fishermen at Pelican Island last weekend has been
identified as Michael J. Schafermeyer. The Missouri Water
Patrol and the St. Louis County Police recovered Schafermeyer's
body after being called out by anglers around 10:30 am Saturday
morning. Authorities think Schafermeyer killed himself by
leaping off of the Blanchette Bridge back on December 26th.
Witnesses stated that a man was seen jumping off the bridge ,
and Schafermeyer's car was found close by........

Help Bash Trash in April
 JEFFERSON
CITY Mo -– Many Missourians are breathing a sigh of relief that
the winter season is drawing to an end, but as the snow melts
away a real eyesore is appearing - litter. That’s why it’s a
good thing April is the annual No MOre Trash! Bash so we can all
get outside and clean up Missouri.
The annual Trash Bash is an annual event sponsored by the
Missouri Departments of Conservation (MDC) and Transportation (MoDOT)
as part of their ongoing No MOre Trash! campaign. During the
entire month of April, efforts are aimed at getting people to
clean up litter all across Missouri from roadsides, parks,
neighborhoods, rivers, streams and other places.
“This is our big spring kick off each year to get our state
looking better,” said Stacy Armstrong, MoDOT No MOre Trash!
coordinator. “Through efforts like this we can reduce litter and
increase awareness.”
MDC No MOre Trash! Coordinator Joe Jerek added that littering
isn’t just ugly, it hurts wildlife, costs Missourians millions
of tax dollars each year, and it’s illegal.
“Birds, fish, turtles and other animals get tangled in litter,
such as plastic six-pack holders and fishing line, and it can
kill them," Jerek explained. "Litter poisons fish, birds and
other wildlife and can cost a litterer up to $1,000 in fines and
one year in jail.”
MoDOT spends more than $5 million each year cleaning litter from
Missouri’s roadsides, while MDC spends almost $1 million a year
to clean litter from conservation areas and other department

Certified Six Pac Captain(s) Sought.....
The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles (www.lewisandclark.net
) is a local non-profit organization that has gained
national recognition for its historic reenactment of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition during the bicentennial of
2003-2004. Its volunteers remain active as historic
reenactors, educating children and families throughout
the country, as well as telling the story of westward
expansion at the Lewis and Clark Museum and Boathouse
near Frontier Park in St. Charles. This non-profit
organization owns full size replicas of the keelboat as
well as the two pirogues used in the Expedition. They
are in the process of gaining the necessary approvals to
bring visitors out on the boats as a fund-raising effort
for the group’s activities and are currently seeking a
captain certified as an OPERATOR OF UNINSPECTED
PASSENGER VESSELS (A.K.A. SIX PAC). This would
preferably be a volunteer position for someone who loves
the river and has an interest in sharing American
History.

Introduction to
Fly Fishing
Location: August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area-Lake 1
Date: Saturday, March
26, 2011
Time: 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Introduction to Fly Fishing will teach young anglers how a fly
rod functions and how to properly cast a fly rod. In addition,
anglers will learn about various trout baits and how to
successfully present those baits. Anglers who wish to KEEP the
trout they catch must purchase and present a valid trout permit
at the beginning of the program. Any angler, regardless of age,
must possess a trout permit if they wish to KEEP their trout.
Anglers who wish to practice catch and release trout fishing
will not need a trout permit. Trout permits are $7 and can be
purchased at any MDC Nature Center or local sporting goods
store. Participants must be between the ages of 7 and 15.
Fishing equipment, volunteers and bait/lures provided.
Participants must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Programs begin promptly at the specified times, no late
arrivals. Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to program start
time to check in. For reservation, please call (636) 441-4554 by

Fish Habitat Event Rescheduled........
The U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers has announced that that they have rescheduled
their planned placement of fish habitat. Now, the event is
slated for March 27th, starting at 9 am. The event involves
volunteers placing discarded Christmas trees at pre-determined
sites in Mark Twain Lake........

Marina Fire Cleanup...
SAN DIEGO -- Oil spill response workers place sorbent
pads and boom in the water to collect fuel leaking from
a yacht that sunk in its slip in the Coronado Cays due
to a fire aboard it, March 25, 2011. The San Diego and
Coronado, Calif., fire departments extinguished the
fire, and the Coast Guard is coordinating the
containment and removal of pollution with oil spill
response organizations.

Yesterday at Lake Center there were probably a hundred
pelicans in the marina, and I didn’t have a camera of
course. I went back today with a camera and there were
probably only a couple of dozen, and they wanted nothing to
do with me taking pictures of them. These three guys (or
girls) were out in the slough at Lake Center . I wonder
what the eagles think of all these pelicans…

Bridge Work Will Wrap Up This Summer........
The work that
began two years ago on the bridge that carries Illinois Route 3
over Piasa Creek should be completed by early June. The work
was delayed because of the discovery of utility lines that had
to be relocated. Joe Gassaway, a field engineer with IDOT
stated that work was completed on Phase 1, and the work on Phase
2 should move fairly rapidly. He also stated that even if the
water levels of the creek increase, work should not be
halted........

Man Starts River Journey To Make A Statement........
On Friday,
Brett Ciccotelli will start a three month, 1,981 mile journey
from Elizabeth, Pennsylvania to New Orleans, Louisiana in a
kayak. Ciccotelli aims to make a statement with his journey.
He will be recording sources of industrial pollution with a
camera, and post them on his website, BanksoftheBasin.com.
Ciccotelli stated that he was inspired too take this journey by
last year's Gulf oil spill........

Flood Levels Falling In Memphis, Tennessee........
The level of
the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee has begun to fall
after reaching a crest of 36.4 feet. The National Weather
Service has forecast a slow, steady recession of the River over
the next week. Flood-prone areas such as West Memphis, Tunica
and Marion will still be seeing minor flooding during the next
few days. Memphis should not see the Mississippi Rise again, as
long as the Ohio River continues to fall........

St. Paul's Predicted Crest Lowered........
Thursday, the
National Weather Service announced that they were rolling back
their predicted crest for the Mississippi River at St. Paul,
Minnesota. The seven day outlook has the river cresting at 20
feet by next Thursday, which would be the seventh highest crest
on record. Officials are encouraging residents to remain
vigilant, as record flooding is still a possibility........

Davenport, Iowa
Floodgates Complete Around Riverfront Ballpark........
After being
destroyed during the floods of 1993, the Davenport riverfront
baseball stadium got wet again in 2001. Improvements were made
that kept the waters off the playing field in 2008, but the
field was only accessible by boat. Crews recently completed a
new flood control system designed to keep floodwaters up to 24
feet out of the stadium. Thursday, crews were double checking
the fit and finish of the floodwall........

Crane barge arrives in Crescent City
CRESCENT CITY, Calif. -- The Derrick Barge-24, a
heavy-lift crane barge that will be used to facilitate
the removal of pollution threats within the inner boat
basin, arrives in the Crescent City Harbor Thursday,
March 24, 2011. The Unified Command's primary
operational goal is to mitigate environmental impact to
the harbor, so Crescent City can begin restoring its
harbor as soon as possible.

May there always be enough docking space for you and your friends at your
favorite beach place.
May you always find that firewood and friends are to be found and you never
burn your feet on that hot sandy ground.
May your cooler be stuffed, your ice never melts, but don’t drink so much
that you end up in cuffs.
May your time on the river always be safe and please take home all of your
waste.
May no storms come our way and the rain goes away, not to return on our

New Dry Dock Arrives At Mike's Inc........
Wednesday,
Mike's Inc. took delivery of a $2 million dry dock. Dry docks
allow workers to access the bottom of vessels in order to
service them. The owner of Mike's Inc., Mike Marko, has made
due without a dry dock for 10 years, and is hoping this one
works well. Marko's business in currently increasing, and with
the new dry dock, Marko is anticipating the need for hiring 15
more employees........

24 March 2010 River History
The "Original Sharkys" Restaurant opened on the river at North Shore
Marina on a Wednesday night under the direction of Tim Tighe, John Biondo
and Dutch Hauhe.
The river had some minor flooding going at the time that caused the road
across the harbor, going to the restaurant, to be under water. The
restaurant then provided a Shuttle Suburban to ferry customers back and
forth all night long through the flood water….
The restaurant had to close it's doors a few days later because the water on
the road got to deep, only to re-open a few days later after they purchased
a pontoon boat to shuttle patrons back and forth.

At St. Louis, Missouri
Body Pulled From The River........
At around 9
am Wednesday morning, a barge operator spotted a body floating
in the Mississippi River along the St. Louis riverfront. Rescue
workers rolled out for the recovery effort, and found the body
of an unidentified woman between two barges south of Chouteau
Avenue. Captain Dan Sutter of the St. Louis Fire Department
stated that the body appears to have been in the water for some
time........

Mississippi River Near Madison County, Illinois
Flood Plan Put Together, Just In Case........
On the heels
of the recent warmer weather, the officials from the Madison
County Emergency Management Agency decided they better begin
laying out a flood plan just in case the River rises above
normal. MCEM members will be filling in sandbags in Alton and
Grafton, Illinois next week. To date, forecasters are not
anticipating flooding like what occurred during the flood of
1993, but heavy rains could make things worse........

Lock and Dam No.2 in Hastings, Minnesota Prepares
for Flood.......
Portions of Lock and Dam Road are
predicted to be under water soon and workers at the lock and dam
will have to use an alternate route to get to work. Plans are to
use the city’s paved bike trail over the Lake Rebecca levy.
The bike path floods at about 27 feet and the only way to access
the site after that is by using an airboat.
They plan to protect the site up to an elevation of 28 feet and
thousands of sandbags are currently being filled to
protect buildings and machinery.

Vicksburg, Mississippi
Mississippi River Bridge Struck By Barges........
A portion of
the Mississippi River was closed after several barges broke free
from their tow, and struck a bridge. The bridge, which carries
I-20 across the Mississippi River, was closed to traffic as well
until inspectors could determine if there was any structural
damage to the span. The tow had about 30 barges in it, and 16
got free. One barge sank, and another was pinned against the
bridge pier. The tow was loaded with grain, so there are no
concerns about pollution........

Last Call: Boating Grassroots Grants Available From BoatUS
Foundation
Deadline April 1 to
Apply
 ANNAPOLIS,
Md., March 23, 2011 - The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety
and Clean Water has a great way for your local nonprofit boating
organization to help keep our waterways safe and clean - but
time is running out. The Foundation's Grassroots Grant program
offers individual grants of up to $4,000 for boating safety and
clean water projects. However, to have a chance at funding
organizations need to apply by the April 1 deadline.
New to the grant program this year, applicants are encouraged to
upload photos and videos showcasing their proposed project ideas
or anything else that will convey their vision. Once the grant
applications are received in early April, the Foundation will
post the most creative applications online where the public will
vote to decide which projects receive funding later this spring.
Some of the past projects include flying a blimp with safety
messages above popular boating spots, producing radio public
service announcements and installing signs at boat ramps
highlighting the threat of invasive species. In the last 23
years, the Foundation has awarded over $1 million to
organizations that have developed creative projects to promote
safe and clean boating on their local waterways.
Groups interested in applying for one or more grants may go to
www.BoatUS.com/Foundation/Grants to view photos of previous
grant projects, review official guidelines and learn more about
the program.

Certified Six Pac Captain(s) Sought.....
The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles (www.lewisandclark.net
) is a local non-profit organization that has gained
national recognition for its historic reenactment of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition during the bicentennial of
2003-2004. Its volunteers remain active as historic
reenactors, educating children and families throughout
the country, as well as telling the story of westward
expansion at the Lewis and Clark Museum and Boathouse
near Frontier Park in St. Charles. This non-profit
organization owns full size replicas of the keelboat as
well as the two pirogues used in the Expedition. They
are in the process of gaining the necessary approvals to
bring visitors out on the boats as a fund-raising effort
for the group’s activities and are currently seeking a
captain certified as an OPERATOR OF UNINSPECTED
PASSENGER VESSELS (A.K.A. SIX PAC). This would
preferably be a volunteer position for someone who loves
the river and has an interest in sharing American
History.

MRAPS feedback meetings set regarding draft scoping summary report
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announces
feedback
meetings regarding the Draft Scoping Summary Report for the Missouri
River
Authorized Purposes Study (MRAPS). Comments received during the
summer 2010
scoping period have been taken into account, analyzed and addressed
by the
Corps in the draft report.
The Corps is hosting seven public feedback meetings to facilitate
communication and feedback pertaining to the Draft Scoping Summary
Report.
The draft report can be downloaded at www.mraps.org.
"The purpose of the feedback meetings is to provide a forum in which
the
public can offer their thoughts on the draft scoping summary report.
We
intend to verify that we accurately captured their comments during
last
summer's scoping period and encourage their thoughts on the Corps'
initial
response to those comments," said Mark Harberg, study co-manager.
The public feedback meetings will take place at the following
locations:

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. -- A member of the National
Response Corporation cuts a broken piece of floating
dock from its piling in order to remove it from the
Cresecent City Inner Boat Basin Tuesday, March 22, 2011.
The removal of the pilings and broken docks from the
harbor is essential in the preparation of bringing a
floating crane into the harbor to remove damaged vessels
that may pose a pollution threat.

Flooding Outlooks
Rivers Rising Near St. Louis........
The National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has announced that the
Mississippi and Illinois Rivers will be rising closer to the
weekend, and minor flooding is possible around Hardin,
Illinois. No real impact is expected from this rise in the
Rivers, but there are predictions that more significant flooding
could be coming this spring. The Missouri River near St.
Charles, Missouri is not expected to be on the rise this
weekend........

fading.
Only 1,000 built, only 1 remains operational. The most heavily

Upgrades Coming To The Amphitheater........
Prior to the
state of the season at Alton's Riverfront Park Amphitheater,
improvements will be made in order to allow more ticketed events
to be held there. The temporary fencing will be removed, and
permanent fencing will be erected in it's place. The idea is to
channel foot traffic from the pedestrian bridge to the east side
ticket booth. Funding for the fence will come from a $10,000
PEP Grant from Madison County........

"Gotta Have Faith" Benefit April 29th 2011
The Family,the Doctors and Nurses have witnessed Miracles. More than once
the doctors have said that there was not a medical explanation for the
remarkable way Faith has bounced back from these traumatic challenges. She
currently is being weaned from the ...sedatives and the ventilator and is
doing remarkably. She still has a long hard road ahead of her but everyone
is optimistic that she is on the road to recovery! During these past three
months and Kelly (dad) and Kristin (mom) have been staying at the hospital,
diligently at her side. They are so grateful to their family and church for
the help they have gotten with the boys at home.

Shipping
Shipping Season Beginning Early........
Although the
official start to the shipping season does not occur until April
1, when the U.S. Coast Guard places navigational buoys on the
River, AGRIServices will be starting their shipping season
Wednesday. The first barge shipment of the year will be an
eight barge tow loaded with fertilizer. The tow will depart
form St. Louis, Missouri and arrive in Brunswick, Missouri.
AGRIServices has stated that they intend to increase their
shipping efforts, and should have the work to stay busy through
mid-December........

Certified Six Pac Captain(s) Sought.....
The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles (www.lewisandclark.net
) is a local non-profit organization that has gained
national recognition for its historic reenactment of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition during the bicentennial of
2003-2004. Its volunteers remain active as historic
reenactors, educating children and families throughout
the country, as well as telling the story of westward
expansion at the Lewis and Clark Museum and Boathouse
near Frontier Park in St. Charles. This non-profit
organization owns full size replicas of the keelboat as
well as the two pirogues used in the Expedition. They
are in the process of gaining the necessary approvals to
bring visitors out on the boats as a fund-raising effort
for the group’s activities and are currently seeking a
captain certified as an OPERATOR OF UNINSPECTED
PASSENGER VESSELS (A.K.A. SIX PAC). This would
preferably be a volunteer position for someone who loves
the river and has an interest in sharing American
History.

Caruthersville Getting New Flood Gates........
The U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers is getting ready to replace the antiquated
flood gates at Caruthersville, Missouri, with more modern
varients. In use since 1932, the flood gate system at
Caruthersville uses timbers slid into a metal frame, and then
packs them with plastic sheathing and sand bags. The new system
will start with the installation of concrete hinge and lock
columns which will then be ready to receive swinging steel

Lake of the Ozarks
Lake Level to Drop.......
Operators at
Bagnell Dam are predicting a three foot drop in the lake
level at Lake of the Ozarks in the next week. The level is
predicted to be 654.0 by March 28.
The lake
level was down six inches yesterday.

Vessel Banshee is moved out of harbor
CRESCENT CITY, Calif. -- Vessel owner Thomas Adam's
grandson, Joe Smith, surveys the damage of his
grandfather's boat, Banshee, after it was moved from the
Crescent City Inner Boat Basin Tuesday, March 22, 2011.
The Crescent City Tsunami Response Unified Command is
working closely with vessel owners and harbor personnel
to clean up the harbor.

proposes to install two work barges along their bankline to facilitate
grain loading and promote safer working conditions for employees. The
relocation of a mooring dolphin is also proposed. The activity site is
located at ADM's existing facility in St. Louis County, Missouri, along
the right descending bank of the Mississippi River at approximate river
mile 184. The public notice comment period opens on March 15, 2011 and
closes on April 5, 2011.

Alton Amphitheater Upcoming Season
Tuesday at
4:30, the Alton Amphitheater Commission will meet to hash out
beer vending and concert promotions at the amphitheater.
Last year's
free concert series was believed to be a success, and Alton
officials intend to bring it back this year. At this time,
event scheduling has not been set. Acts that participated in
last year's free Thursday concert series included Head East,
Jake's Leg and Think Floyd........
The amphitheater is only a short distance
from the Alton Marina.

Illinois will play host to the inaugural Fishing for Freedom bass
tournament for armed forces veterans. The tourney and travel
expenses for veterans will be taken care of, including awards and
prizes, entertainment, lodging and meals. Wounded Warriors have
already been signed up, and are coming from as far away as the
Dakotas, Montana and even California........

Fischer Men
Fishing In River Save Suicidal Woman........
Friday afternoon, a woman leapt from the Interstate 55 bridge near
Cape Girardeau, Missouri into the Diversion Channel. Because of the
high waters, she only dropped 14 feet. Luckily, Richard Fischer,
his father, Bob, and Bob's grandson Nathan, were bowfishing for
bighead carp when the woman jumped. Eventually, the Fischer's were
able to talk the woman into letting them rescue her........

Construction At Tennessee Port Could Start Soon........
With last
week's approval of a $13 million grant for the construction of a
deep water port in northwestern Tennessee, construction is
likely to begin within a few weeks. Construction is expected to
take about 18 months. Already, four industrial prospects have
voiced their interest in the port. Earlier in the month, there
were concerns that recent budget cuts made by Congress would
affect the Department of Transportation program that was the
origin of the grant........

Piloting is the first course in the sequence of USPS courses on
navigation, covering the basics of coastal and inland
navigation. This course focuses on navigation as it is done on
recreational boats today and embraces how to find your way even
if your GPS fails. The course includes many in-class exercises,
developing the student’s skills through hands-on practice and
learning.

All Ages) Learn about wetlands and the critters that call them
home at Wetlands for Kids. Kids will see live birds of prey,
create wetland artwork, explore a beaver lodge, practice their
air rifle and archery skills, view live snakes and turtles or
watch retriever dogs in action. Visit more than 15 stations to
learn about nature through hands-on adventures such as
fly-tying, a scavenger hunt or the Duck Wing Maze. Sample fried
fish from Missouri’s big rivers, or purchase food and beverages
from the on-site concessionaire. Each child who registers will
receive a free Ducks Unlimited Greenwing membership, which
includes a one-year subscription to the Puddler magazine. (No

Introduction to Fly Fishing
Location: August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area-Lake 1
Date: Saturday, March
26, 2011
Time: 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Introduction to Fly Fishing will teach young anglers how a fly
rod functions and how to properly cast a fly rod. In addition,
anglers will learn about various trout baits and how to
successfully present those baits. Anglers who wish to KEEP the
trout they catch must purchase and present a valid trout permit
at the beginning of the program. Any angler, regardless of age,
must possess a trout permit if they wish to KEEP their trout.
Anglers who wish to practice catch and release trout fishing
will not need a trout permit. Trout permits are $7 and can be
purchased at any MDC Nature Center or local sporting goods
store. Participants must be between the ages of 7 and 15.
Fishing equipment, volunteers and bait/lures provided.
Participants must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Programs begin promptly at the specified times, no late
arrivals. Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to program start
time to check in. For reservation, please call (636) 441-4554 by

Acquisitions, announced that they have filed suit against the
new website, SeeDealerCost.com. The suit claims that the use of
contractual and proprietary pricing information causes damage to
J&D Acquisitions' brands and dealers. Chairman and CEO of J&D
Acquisitions, Irwin Jacobs, stated that the company is
investigating how the website acquired proprietary

Crescent City Tsunami Response lifts sunken vessel
CRESCENT CITY, Calif. -- Safety officers observe the
lifting operations of the vessel, Hard Rock, in the
Crescent City Inner Boat Basin Monday, March 21, 2011.
The Crescent City Tsunami Response contracted divers use
inflatable float bags to lift sunken vessels to the
surface in preparation for salvage.
