A Look Back:  Diver Somersaults From Eads Bridge........

On Tuesday, May 21, 1895, professional swimmer Paul Tustin somersaulted off of the Eads Bridge before plummeting 120 feet into the Mississippi River below.

Tustin entered the water feet-first and upright, with his arms raised over his head.  After briefly disappearing below the water, he resurfaced, and began swimming to a waiting boat.

Reportedly, Tustin had quite a reputation as a bridge jumper.  He had ruptured some blood vessels in his left leg about a year prior during a 90 foot jump........

Coast Guard:  Wear Your Life Jackets........

The U.S. Coast Guard is urging boaters and other water enthusiasts to always wear their life jackets while they are in or on the water.

Saturday, May 21 was the first day of National Safe Boating Week, and the Coast Guard is recommending that all boaters choose properly fitting life jackets, and more importantly, to wear them.

Information all boaters should know about life jackets includes:

○  Certain life jackets are designed to keep the wearers head above the water, and help with proper breathing.

○  The Coast Guard requires a USCG approved Type I, II. III or V life jacket for each person aboard.

○  Every state has regulations requiring children to wear life jackets

○  An adult sized life jacket won't work for children

○  Life jackets must be properly stowed, and tested for buoyancy and wear at least once per year.

    US Army Corps of Engineers

St. Louis District - Weekly Navigation Channel Condition

Mississippi River

Due to shoaling in the vicinity of Mile 203.0, there has been a significant change in the navigation channel. Five buoys have been relocated resulting in a channel shift towards the Missouri side of the river. Mariners who are unfamiliar with the area or that have not transited the area recently are urged to exercise caution in the area.

A tree stump has been reported in the vicinity of Mile 301.2, 500 yards south of L/D 22. The stump is reportedly extending 5 feet above the waters surface. Mariners are urged to exercise caution in the area.

Continuing until approximately April 2017, Ted Shanks Conservation Area is conducting construction operations in the vicinity of Mile 287.5, RDB. Mariners are requested NOT to hold up in this area while construction is ongoing. Mariners are urged to exercise caution in the area.

Illinois River

The USACE St. Louis District advises that the channel is open in the vicinity of Mile 40.1, but reduced to approximately 150 feet. Mariners are urged to transit the area at their slowest safe speed.

Kaskaskia River

Route 182 Bridge; Due to the installation of a Safe Span containment system in the navigation span, the vertical clearance has been reduced to 38.0 feet above normal pool. Bridge pier and deck repair work continues from 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Mariners may contact the onsite work boat M/V MISS LUCY via VHF-FM Channel 13, for further information.

The above info is reprinted from the US Army Corps of Engineers website for your "reference."

National Safe Boating Week

Safe Boating Week Starts Saturday........

On Saturday, the marine industry will be kicking off National Safe Boating Week, which is a campaign that encourages boaters to wear life jackets, and participate in responsible boating practices.

National Safe Boating Week marks the start of the annual North American Safe Boating Campaign, a year-long effort focusing on spreading the word on boating safety, as well as the importance of wearing a life jacket.

Rachel Johnson, the executive director of the National Safe Boating Council says that it may be tempting to boat without a lifejacket on, but a life jacket that isn't worn cannot save your life........

2 Friends Take On Mississippi River Trips........

In the spring of 2009, Fred Gage and his long-time friend Steve Brummond decided to take a short trip down the Mississippi in Gage's 21 foot diesel powered tugboat named Popeye.

The pair spent two weeks traveling from Lake Pepin, Minnesota to Dubuque, Iowa and back.  They made 8 miles per hour downstream, and only 4 mph upstream.

AS they drove home after completing that first trip, they decided to focus on the positive experiences, and determined that they would be making several more trips in order to wrap up their "Minneapolis to Mobile" journey........

Crews Working On Tracking Peregrine Falcons........

The World Bird Sanctuary is working with Amren at their Sioux energy center in West Alton to place tracking bands on the new peregrine falcons nesting 250 feet high along a smokestack overlooking the river.

According to Jeff Meshach, Interim Director of the World Bird Sanctuary says that the falcons like high places, so they place nest boxes on the smokestack.

Friday morning, the crew took the new falcons from their nests to draw blood, give them a quick check over, and then place leg bands on the birds, prior to returning them to the nests........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release

Courtesy Boat Inspections To Be Conducted On Mark Twain Lake And Mississippi River

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces that Troop B marine operations troopers will conduct courtesy boat inspections on Mark Twain Lake and the Mississippi River as a part of National Safe Boating Week. National Safe Boating Week will take place from May 21, 2016 through May 27, 2016, to promote safe boat operation during the kick-off to the upcoming boating season.

On Saturday, May 21, 2016, officers will conduct courtesy boat inspections at the Ray Behrens Boat Ramp from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. On the same day, officers will conduct inspections at the Hannibal Marina Boat Ramp on the Mississippi River from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The goal of the boat inspection stations is to verify boaters have the required equipment on board their boat, provide a Patrol boat inspection sticker if the boater is in compliance, and to answer boating questions. There is no cost for those participating.

“The boating season is upon us and the Patrol is dedicated to promoting safety on our waterways,” stated Captain Wilt. “The upcoming boat inspections are a great way to insure you will be safe while enjoying the many lakes and rivers in our area.”

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Join us in supporting the Drive To Zero Highway Deaths. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!
