YesterYear's
River Picture of the Day in 2012 .........
were sent to us by Capt'n
Larry Demko who got into his
land yacht with his wife Susan and took off from St. Louis on a
"Gypsy Tour."
Bill:
While everyone on the river is preparing for the Blessing of the Fleet,
Susan and I are on the 2nd leg of our "gypsy" tour.
While I'm certain it's not as adventurous as Mike and Rosie's trek (and
definitely doesn't deserve a blog), we're spreading the "gospel of
Riverbills" wherever we go!
For three weeks, beginning in late May and spilling over into early June, we
spent some time boating on Tellico Lake and the Tennessee River around
Knoxville. And old friend of ours has a 25 ft Cobalt on the Tennessee River
so we've taken some sight-seeing "tours" and spent some great days on the
water. ( I was going to describe the the boating as "delightful" but thought
Mike Holaus might think my estrogen levels were too high!)
The pics here are during one of our days on Tellico Lake. We went past the
Sea Ray plant in Vonore, TN and grabbed lunch at a waterfront restaurant.
Then we stopped for gas at another marina/waterfront restaurant, The River
Rock Grill.
In one pic, I appointed Chas McKweon, our boating host, as he official
holder of our traveling Riverbills bumper sticker. I'm also in the pic along
with Janette McKeown.
In the other pic, Susan and Janette are in the boat right before we fueled
up (yes, they were out of the boat while we were fueling). Of course, we all
wanted to hold the Riverbills sticker, but I "appointed" Susan to hold it.
She said she feels closer to you & the River when the adhesive sticks to her
fingers. I thought that was kinky.
We're now in St. James City, FL and our boating area is Pine Island Sound
and the Gulf of Mexico. I'll send pics from time to time. (I'm sure you're
looking forward to that! LOL )
We've eaten at Woody's Waterside -- the home of the buoy that resembles the
famous, southern-most buoy located in Key West. I can walk there from my
brother-in--law's house. (not to Key West, to Woody's!)
If we run into any St. Louisans, we'll mark the occasion with a pic or two.
I hope you have good weather for the Blessing the of the Fleet.

Historic Hotel Stayed Open During Flood........
During the
recent flooding along the Mississippi River, the historic Ruebel
Hotel and Restaurant in Grafton remained open, despite
encroaching floodwaters. Originally built in 1879, the hotel
caught fire in 1912, and was rebuild, and renovated in 1997.
During the flooding of 2008, the lower level was destroyed,
forcing the owners, Mo and Karen Khamee to refurbish it again.

Divers Search Lake Michigan For The Griffin........
Recently,
divers began to excavate an underwater pit in Lake Michigan,
which may reveal the final resting place of the Griffin. The
Griffin was a 17th century ship commanded by French explorer La
Salle. Expedition leader Steve Libert has spent close to
thirty years searching for the vessel. He stated that he is
hopeful that by Sunday, the digging may reach an object that
sonar readings are showing to be about 40 feet long, and 18 feet
wide.... about what the Griffin measured....

Channel Condition Status Report - 05 June 2013
US
Army Corps of Engineers
St.
Louis District - Weekly Navigation Channel Condition
Dredge Status
Dredge Potter - dockside
UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER/ILLINOIS WATERWAY - SAFETY ZONE - UPDATE
Zone 28 (Mile 185.4 – Mile 109.9). A Safety Zone has been established in St.
Louis Harbor between Mile 184.0 and 179.0. Southbound tows greater than 600
feet in length, excluding the towboat, should limit their transit to
daylight hours and should have a minimum of 250-horsepower for each loaded
barge. Northbound tows must have enough horsepower to maintain a speed of
3-mph, while transiting through all St. Louis Harbor Bridges. All towing
vessels are prohibited from carrying barges on the hip. Assess bridge
clearance well in advance, pre-identify lay-up areas in the event of a river
closure. The COTP recommends that towing vessels have a pilot onboard with
experience in high water, similar size tows and all St. Louis Bridges.
Recreational traffic is prohibited from transiting within this zone. Towboat
operators should be experienced in high water operations and should proceed
at their slowest safe operating speed based upon prevailing conditions in
order to minimize wake damage. Towboats are prohibited from laying up on
levees. For additional information, please see the Local Notice To Mariners

HIGH WATER SALE
Unfortunately, it appears we won’t be getting that dry spring
that was anticipated. Instead, we have received more rain than
we need. This has put a damper on an early season boating, but
there is a “silver lining” to this delay.
During this high water, Bloch Marine Service remains operational
at its Polestar Marina and Yacht Club of Saint Louis locations,
and continues to have service capabilities at our Harbor Point
location and other marinas such as Alton Marina and Grafton
Harbor. In an effort to save you precious boating time when the
water goes down, and to save you money, Bloch Marine is offering
“high water” discounts as follows
-
If it if feasible to get to your
boat, and a pullout is required for the work you
request, the pullout portion of your service bill will be
at no charge. This includes a credit of $6.00/per foot
on our bottom paint special package. (Boats weighing 30 tons
or less/fiberglass and aluminum only.)
-
We will also apply a 10% discount to labor
(excluding bottom paint special labor).
These discounts will apply if the work is
ordered by you when the water level at the Grafton gauge is
above 22.0 feet during this current high water event.
We know the high water is discouraging, but it won’t last
forever, and this is an opportunity for you to take advantage of
an otherwise unfortunate situation.
Give us a call today and schedule that work you have been
putting off, and you can save on downtime and money!

Illinois Boating Laws
Harsher Penalties Possible For BWI........
Illinois
lawmakers are considering harsher
penalties for incidents that involve
boat operators. Earlier this spring,
the General Assembly approved
legislation that will allow the state to
suspend, or revoke a person's drivers
license if they are in a serious boating
accident, and have been found to be
operating a vessel under the influence
of drugs and alcohol. The tougher
penalties would affect only those
boaters involved in serious accidents.
However, smaller offences may result in
the loss of boating privileges........

Carlyle lake.... Paddle Away
CARLYLE LAKE – In recognition of Great Outdoors Month, The
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host “Paddle Away” at 9:00

Trail located next to the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center. The

adults to paddle safely! Participants can gain experience
and test their skills on a kayak or a canoe.
Paddling is great way to exercise and for families to spend
time together in the outdoors, it has become a very popular
activity for people of all ages at Carlyle Lake and on the
Kaskaskia River.
Here are some reasons why people go kayaking and canoeing:
-
Canoeing and kayaking is a healthy and fun activity to share
with your whole family.
-
It doesn’t require a lot of technical know-how to get
started with the activity. You just need to learn some basic
paddling skills to begin.
-
It is a great workout tool for people of all ages. You will
be able to train and work out those muscles and at the same
time, have an exhilarating time on the water. Now what can
be better than that?
-
Paddling can reduce stress and promote relaxation. The
smooth strokes upon the water can create a sense of calmness
and a feeling of peace with nature.
-
In the coves of Carlyle Lake, one can have the opportunity
to see wildlife in their natural habitat. Kayaking is also a
very popular activity for many avid birdwatchers.
-
You will be able to explore the shoreline along the lake
which in some areas inaccessible by motor boats

Judge Rule Adverse
Possession Suits May
Proceed........
Last month, Circuit
Court Judge Kenneth
M. Hayden ruled that
several adverse
possession/quiet
title lawsuits may
proceed to trial.
This may make it
easier for property
owners to be granted
the title to homes
that Amren now
claims to be owned
by the power
company. The
decision followed an
earlier trial in
which Amren Missouri
claimed that the
lawsuits should be
dismissed, without
going to
trial........
