NEWS from BoatUS

Media Alert: Chicago City Hall Hearing Monday July 28, 1pm; Boat Owners Association of The United States Asks Chicagoland Boaters to Speak Up on Aldermen' Ethanol Proposal

WHAT: On Monday, July 28, at 1pm at Chicago City Hall a hearing will be held to debate legislation supported by Chicago City Council Alderman that would require all self-serve gas stations in the City of Chicago to sell gasoline with higher levels – 15% – of ethanol (E15). It is against federal law to use E15 gasoline in a boat and using this ethanol blend could lead to significant damage to the engine. More information on how E15 affects outboard engines can be found at National Renewable Energy Laboratory Outboard Study. Additional information about ethanol and boats is at BoatUS.com/seaworthy/ethanol.

WHY: Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) urges Chicago area boaters to speak out against this proposal, as the half-million member national boat owners group believes the legislation would have an unintended consequence of making boat engine-approved E10 fuel harder to find for consumers, as self-serve stations would not be required to add expensive new fueling pumps to offer an additional consumer choice of E15. Instead, the legislation may force stations with limited gas pump selections to replace their current E10 dispensing selection with E15 to meet the mandate. While BoatUS appreciates the need to diversify our country’s fuel and energy sources, passage of this legislation would also greatly increase the chance of misfueling boats on trailers, which are often filled up at the same time as the tow vehicle.

WHEN: Monday, July 28 at 1:00PM Finance Committee hearing on Amendment of Municipal Code Chapter 4-108

WHERE: City of Chicago City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle Street, Chicago, Illinois 60602

HOW: City of Chicago resident boaters are encouraged to attend the hearing Monday or may contact their Alderman to share their views by going to:

Navigation Channel Condition Status Report ....24 Jul 2014

    US Army Corps of Engineers

St. Louis District - Weekly Navigation Channel Condition

Dredge Potter    - standby
Dredge America - standby

Mississippi River

Continuing until further notice the Melvin Price L/D (main chamber) in the vicinity of Mile 200.8, is closed for repairs. All vessels will be required to use the auxiliary chamber. Mariners may contact the L/D at (618) 462-1713 or via VHF-FM Channel 14, for additional information.

A UTV has been reported sunk in the vicinity of Mile 182.0, approximately 250 yards off the LDB (Illinois side of the river) and approximately 650 yards north of the I-70 Mississippi River Bridge. From a USACE Survey, revealed approximately 21 feet over the top of the UTV with the St. Louis Harbor Gauge at 24.8 feet above zero. Mariners are requested to favor the right descending side of the channel between approximate Miles 185.4 and 180.0 and to transit the area with caution

Illinois Waterway
Zones 1-8 (Mile 199.0 – Mile 9.0).
The following restrictions apply to all zones contained within this Safety Advisory: Towboat operators should be experienced in high water
operations and should proceed at their slowest safe operating speed based upon prevailing conditions in order to minimize wake damage. The
drift of debris may be hazardous to navigation, causing buoys to be dragged off station. Down streaming operations are not recommended
unless the vessel is equal to or greater than 75 feet in length and have a minimum of 1,800 horsepower. Mariners are requested to remain
aware of the close proximity to railways when choosing a location to push into the bank, with the current river stages, railway systems close to
the river’s edge may become threatened by the head of a tow when pushed into the bank.
All vessels are reminded to minimize speed to avoid wake damage.

Missouri River

Daniel Boone Companion Bridge; Cofferdam installation is ongoing on both sides of the navigation channel, minimum horizontal clearance between cofferdams is 400 feet. At times the floating workplant may be temporarily moored in the channel and will move on 30-minute advance notice by contacting the M/V GABRIEL J via VHF-FM Channels 13 or 16.

Kaskaskia River

A 45-50 foot vessel has been reported sunk at a dock in the vicinity of Mile 10.0, Water Street Bar and Grill, Evansville, Illinois. A deck barge is reportedly moored over the top of the vessel. Mariners are urged to exercise caution in the area.

Business Cited For Hazardous Waste Storage In Floodplain........

Recently, Madison County twice cited S&K Towing and Repair for storing piles of potentially hazardous waste on their property adjacent to Cahokia Creek, which is a tributary of the Mississippi River.  The county is cracking down on S&K after neighbors complained about piles of fill material dumped on the property.  Officials are worried about how much of the hazardous waste has leached into the floodplain........

  Upper Mississippi River

     Recent Floods Leave River Impassible........

By next Tuesday, traffic along the Upper Mississippi River should be returning to normal.  Recent flooding has left the upper Mississippi River virtually impassible.  The receding floodwaters left behind a considerable amount of silt in the navigation channel, especially near Alma and Winona, Wisconsin.  This has caused numerous tows and barges to get stuck on the bottom.  The barges need a minimum 9 foot deep channel........

     Sobriety Checkpoint, Saturation Scheduled........

On Friday, the Missouri State Highway Patrol announced that they are planning a sobriety checkpoint and/or a saturation at the Lake of the Ozarks.  The MSHP said that the increased enforcement efforts will take place sometime during August.  No additional details were not provided.  A checkpoint means that troopers will stop and check all boaters for boating while intoxicated and other violations.  A saturation means an increase in trooper presence on the water........

Missouri State Highway Patrol
     News Release

Lake Of The Ozarks Shootout Boat Race

Captain Gregory D. Kindle, commanding officer, Troop F, Jefferson City, would like to remind boaters of the upcoming Lake of the Ozarks Shootout boat race event being held near the Hurricane Deck Bridge on Lake of the Ozarks. The event will take place from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, August 23, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Sunday, August 24. Boating traffic will be restricted to no wake, idle speed from the 31.5-mile mark to the 36-mile mark of the main channel due to the event. The no wake, idle speed restriction will begin 30 minutes prior to the event start time each day and will continue to be enforced up to 30 minutes after the last race each day. The race course itself will stretch from approximately the 33-mile mark to the 34.7-mile mark on the southwest side of the main channel.

Boaters wishing to enter or exit coves blocked by the race course during the event will be allowed to do so upon the signal of Missouri State Highway Patrol marine operations troopers, or other authorized event personnel, at the earliest and safest opportunity. Every attempt will be made to minimize inconvenience to boaters navigating in the area.

Anchoring will be allowed in the designated spectator area on the northeast side of the main channel. There will be event volunteers on the water to assist spectators in locating the designated spectator area. Boaters are encouraged to use caution while traveling to and from the event, since a large turnout from the boating public is expected.

In support of The Drive To ZERO Highway Deaths, the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!! In an emergency, the public can contact the Highway Patrol toll-free at 1-800-525-5555 or on a cellular phone at *55.

The Video of the Day... was sent to us by Captain Darryll Weil who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the boat............  "After You."

Starting to fine tune the video project to make it easier to edit. Combined Monday and Tuesday and added titles before and after the time lapse. It is on my YouTube channel at: http://youtu.be/79hmj5cxDEI

Right at a minute in length right now and a little better quality. Also put it on the www.riverwebcams.com

Live pictures will go up on riverwebcams Thursday morning.

Enjoy, Darryll
