Hi Captain Bill,
My brother Jim is visiting from California and he loves his
River Time. We put in at Hideaway, had lunch at Boathouse and
made it all the way to Winfield Dam to see all the open gates.
On the drive home we helped a red ear slider find his way back
to the Mississippi!

Mississippi River Delta
Officials: Gulf Of Mexico Dead Zone To
Be Larger This Year........
Scientists with the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration are forecasting that this summer's
hypoxic area, or "dead zone" will be larger than the long-term
average, but still significantly smaller, at approximately 6,700
square miles, than the record set in 2017.
The dead zone is an area of water containing
little to no oxygen that can kill fish and other marine life.
This annual forecast is based upon data from the U.S. Geological
Survey river-flow and nutrient data.
The main factors contributing to this year's
above average dead zone are the high river flow rates and the
nutrient loads delivered to the Gulf of Mexico this spring,
mainly from the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers........

Mississippi River Near Davenport, Iowa
First Section Of Arch Floor Installed
On The New I-74 Bridge........
Construction crews have set the first of six
sections of road decking for the new Interstate 74 Bridge over
the Mississippi River at the Quad Cities. The installation of
the road deck between the westbound arch legs is one of the
final steps in finishing the span.
The process to install the road decking
between the arch legs is different than the standard
construction methods used on the portions of road deck
surrounding the arch.
Most of the road deck is set on top of piers
that were built into the riverbed, but between the arches, there
are no piers. The 795 feet of roadway is suspended by steel
cables that are hung from the arch.........

Bourbeuse River In Franklin County,
Missouri
Man Tries To Elude Police By Floating
Down The River........
On Friday, a 38 year old man was arrested
after fleeing a traffic stop and jumping into the Bourbeuse
River to evade capture. According to Major Trevor Wild, the man
drove through a hayfield, abandoned his car and tried to swim
down the river.
The man was originally stopped for driving
without a license and failing to yield to law enforcement. He
got to shore around 1:30 p.m. and police promptly arrested him.
Wild said that while it is not a normal
occurrence, this was not the first time someone has tried to
evade capture by floating down a river........

Boat Handling Rules
When Two Vessels Meet, Who Must 'Give
Way'?
Operating boats come with their own set of
rules that must be followed, and on busy waterways such as the
Lake of the Ozarks, being ignorant of those rules is a luxury
boaters cannot afford.
Boating in Missouri is governed by state
statutes as well as U.S. Coast Guard navigation rules and
regulations that incorporate international maritime regulations
known as COLREG, or the Convention on the International
Regulations for Preventing Collisions At Sea.
A common question boaters have is when two
vessels meet and their courses intersect, which boat should
maintain it's course, or "stand on" and which should change
course, or "give way"? The answer lies in COLREG, specifically
Rule 18, which outlines the pecking order for boats........

the health and safety of our crew and passengers.
We received a call today from the U.S. Coast Guard advising us
that all passengers will be required to stay in their vehicles
when crossing the ferry. This is in response to the restrictions

effect until the restrictions are lifted.

Mississippi River at UMR 231.8
05-18-20 Had a
question about the pump out. At least that is working. Remember
what you are working with and be careful. Pat and Julio got it
going today. Maybe the weather will improve for the week end.
See you at the end of the road. |

The old building has been torn down.
Waiting on permits for new building.
"The plan is to keep it in the same location, maybe a little
closer to the river and up about 7 ft higher. The building will
be just a little smaller with a bigger deck."

St.
Charles Boat & Motor
The Complete Marine
03-23-20
St. Charles Boat & Motor update:
Due to the unprecedented time that
the country is experiencing, we are implementing some additions
to our normal routine:
At this time, we remain open for business, operating with a
small staff. For the safety of our customers, our staff, and our
families, in addition to our normal operations, we are offering
some alternative means of interacting with us as well – for both
purchasing products (from parts to a new boat) and for your
service needs.
If you’d like to shop any new or used inventory with us with
minimized social interaction, we can schedule individual
appointments or send you a virtual video tour of a unit. You can
always shop our inventory on our website as well, at
www.stcharlesboat.com. We currently have some huge discounts
on our in stock inventory! If you’re interested in a private
appointment, please e-mail us at zeke@stcharlesboat.com or you
can call us at 636-947-0106 during normal business hours.
For your service needs, we can schedule a touchless drop off and
pick-up with you. For touchless drop off or pick-up, e-mail
Jerry at jerry@stcharlesboat.com or Zeke at zeke@stcharlesboat.com
for scheduling and instructions.
We realize that this too will pass and we can return to a more
normal routine, which means getting back to boating for many of
us!
We will keep our customer’s updated by posting on our
website and
Facebook page.

Boating Legislation
The Senate Approved The Great American
Outdoors Act........
On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate approved the
Great American Outdoors Act in a bipartisan vote of 73 - 25, and
Frank Hugelmeyer, president of the National Marine Manufacturers
Association is pleased to see the legislation moving through
Congress.
Hugelmeyer says that with the Senate's
approval, the Great American Outdoors Act is one step closer to
protecting and expanding outdoor recreation opportunities across
the nation, and they are calling on the House of Representatives
to quickly consider and pass this crucial legislation.
According to Jessica Turner, the executive
director of Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, the Great American
Outdoors Act is the single most important piece of conservation
and outdoor recreation legislation before Congress in
decades........

Missouri State Highway Patrol
News Release........
June 18, 2020
EMPHASIS: Patrol: Plan A Safe July Fourth Weekend!
Colonel Eric T.
Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol,
encourages Missouri’s travelers to make smart choices for a safe
July Fourth holiday. The state’s wide variety of recreational
opportunities are a great way to celebrate our nation’s
freedoms. But, no matter what you plan for the long weekend, you
can’t go wrong if you choose to follow all Missouri traffic and
boating laws. It is also important to observe social distancing
and other CDC guidelines related to the coronavirus, and stay
home if you are ill.
During the 2019 counting period, 15 people were killed and 457
injured in Missouri over the holiday in 1,109 traffic crashes.
Over the 2019 July Fourth holiday, troopers arrested 162 people
for driving while intoxicated. In 2019, there were nine boating
crashes, which included four injuries and zero fatalities. Three
people drowned during last year's July Fourth holiday. Troopers
made 13 boating while intoxicated arrests in 2019.
The 2020 counting period for the July Fourth holiday will be
from 6 p.m., Thursday, July 2, to 11:59 p.m., Sunday, July 6,
2020.
The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E.
(Crash Awareness & Reduction Effort) and Operation Dry Water
over the July Fourth holiday weekend. Operation Dry Water
specifically targets impaired vessel operators. All available
troopers will be patrolling Missouri roadways and waterways to
enforce traffic and boating laws, and offering assistance as
needed.
Remember: Statutes direct motorists to drive with the highest
degree of care. There is never a good reason to drive over the
speed limit. Please be a courteous driver and follow all traffic
laws. Never drink and drive, and always use a seat belt!
Missouri’s boaters are
asked to do their part by remaining alert for other boats and
swimmers, and being courteous on the water. With more boats on
the water, it is even more important to pay attention when
operating your vessel. Never operate a vessel if you’ve consumed
alcohol. Boaters need to be aware that it is illegal to
discharge fireworks from a vessel. Leave all fireworks in a safe
place on shore.
Anyone needing
assistance or who witnesses criminal activity while traveling on
Missouri’s roadways or waterways can contact the nearest Highway
Patrol troop headquarters by calling the Patrol Emergency Report
Line at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone. Motorists may
call 1-888-275-6636 to check for road construction along their
travel route.
Too many people die in traffic crashes each year in Missouri.
The choices you make when you’re behind the wheel matter. Make
good choices, so you’ll never have to say, “If I could just go
back …”
Watercraft operators
must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the
waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to
ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

Boat Manufacturing And Sales
Manufacturing & PWC Sales Increased During
May........
According to new data released by the
National Marine Manufacturers Association, there was an increase
in manufacturing activity during May, with seasonally adjusted
wholesale shipments of outboard engines, PWC, wake sport boats
and jet boats seeing increases of 19 to 160 percent compared to
April.
The data also reveals an unprecedented
increase in personal watercraft seasonally adjusted sales,
rising 59 percent compared to April and up 75 percent compared
to one year ago.
These early results are an encouraging sign
for the sale of new boats as well as boating activity as the
summer boating season is finally opening up across the
nation........

Boat Manufacturer
More Boat Builders Relocating Near The Lake
Of The Ozarks........
In recent years, Lebanon, Missouri has
quietly become the aluminum boat building capital of the world
and with the announcement of Ranger Boats relocating their
aluminum boat manufacturing operations there next year, it is
showing no signs of slowing down.
Ranger Boats, headquartered in Flippin,
Arkansas will begin building boats in Lebanon in 2021. They
will be joining a growing number of major boat brands who have
picked Lebanon as their manufacturing hub, including G3 Boats,
Landau Boats, Lowe Boats and Tracker Marine.
The city of Lebanon is centrally located in
the United States, and offers easy access to Interstates 44, 55
and 65. The town is also ideally located near the Lake of the
Ozarks, Lake Taneycomo, Table Rock Lake and Bull Shoals
Lake........

River
History....
19 June 2016 in River History
At around 1:45 pm Sunday, a man on a jet ski struck the Melvin Price Dam on
the Mississippi RIver at Alton, was sucked 17 feet underwater, before
appearing on the other side of the dam, screaming for help.
Officials say that the jet skier strayed out of the designated perimeter in
the water. Luckily, the man was wearing a life jacket, and is recovering in
the hospital.
Alton Fire Department Chief Bernie Sebold said that the man is lucky to be
alive. Sebold reminds that those operating jet skis should do so with a
buddy, always wear a life jacket, and have a whistle handy........

03/20/2020
Calhoun Ferry Company’s priority is
the health and safety of our crew and passengers.
We received a call today from the U.S. Coast Guard advising us
that all passengers will be required to stay in their vehicles
when crossing the ferry. This is in response to the restrictions
placed on gatherings of 10 or more people. This will remain in
effect until the restrictions are lifted.
We are cleaning and disinfecting all crew areas and all ferry
passes as we receive them.
Starting tomorrow 03/21/2020 we will be reducing our hours to
eliminate the late night shift on Friday and Saturday. This will
remain in effect until the restrictions are lifted. Hours will
be Monday through Saturday 5am to 9pm and Sunday 8am to 9pm.
We will all get through this together by working together for a
better tomorrow. Stay safe!
Thank You,
The Calhoun Ferry Company

St.
Charles Boat & Motor
The Complete Marine
03-23-20
St. Charles Boat & Motor update:
Due to the unprecedented time that
the country is experiencing, we are implementing some additions
to our normal routine:
At this time, we remain open for business, operating with a
small staff. For the safety of our customers, our staff, and our
families, in addition to our normal operations, we are offering
some alternative means of interacting with us as well – for both
purchasing products (from parts to a new boat) and for your
service needs.
If you’d like to shop any new or used inventory with us with
minimized social interaction, we can schedule individual
appointments or send you a virtual video tour of a unit. You can
always shop our inventory on our website as well, at
www.stcharlesboat.com. We currently have some huge discounts
on our in stock inventory! If you’re interested in a private
appointment, please e-mail us at zeke@stcharlesboat.com or you
can call us at 636-947-0106 during normal business hours.
For your service needs, we can schedule a touchless drop off and
pick-up with you. For touchless drop off or pick-up, e-mail
Jerry at jerry@stcharlesboat.com or Zeke at zeke@stcharlesboat.com
for scheduling and instructions.
We realize that this too will pass and we can return to a more
normal routine, which means getting back to boating for many of
us!
We will keep our customer’s updated by posting on our
website and
Facebook page.

The Pictures of the Day.....
were sent to us by
Ramjet, formerly of Pool 26 of the Mississippi River, now living
in Florida....
Hello Everyone!
I want to thank y’all for your Birthday Wishes on Facebook.
We have been anchored off shore for 5
days now working on a island. Plan to head back to the mainland
for a couple days then back here to work again. It’s beautiful
here on the island. No bridge. No road. No police. No assholes.
Just Respectful Resourceful ppl. Currently working with the
island manager a couple days a week. Then odd jobs. Managing
properties, Plenty of work. You cannot be a pussy and live or
work on an island without a bridge to it. Everything you need
you handle a minimum of 5 times before you get it home. From
every board to every bottle of rum. As a matter of fact I was
stopped by on of the residents of the island the other day to
make sure I was fulfilling there requirements of always having a
drink in your hand after 5 o’clock earlier if possible.
If your not living your dreams folks. Start! Do something
everyday even if it’s falling asleep reading about where you
want to be. Put yourself in the path of those who have the
knowledge that you need for your dream. Live Learn Love!

Missouri River At St. Charles, Missouri
The Fireworks Show Must Go On........
On Wednesday, the City of St. Charles,
Missouri announced that they were planning to go ahead with
preparations for a riverfront fireworks display on July 4th
The City posted on social media that while
the community was dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak, they made
the decision to cancel RIverfest several months ago in the
interest and safety of residents and visitors.
Since that time, the City has seen their
number of COVID cases fall and restrictions have been lifted.
The City feels confident that they can host a safe fireworks
display to celebrate the Fourth of July........

Mississippi River Near Cape Girardeau,
Missouri
First Responders Train For Water
Rescues........
Boating, paddling and floating season has
arrived, so first responders in the heartland participated in
some water rescue training along the Mississippi River near Cape
Girardeau.
Cody Johnson, a Firefighter with the City of
Cape Girardeau and member of the Region E Homeland Security and
Response Team, said that it only takes a moment for someone to
go under the surface of the water and not resurface.
Johnson says that slips, trips and falls can
happen at any time, so make sure to wear your life jacket and
let someone know where you are going and what time you will be
back........

Plan Steering Committee are urging the use of a $350,000 grant
to help modernize utilities, specifically power lines along the
city's riverfront.
Chuck Bevelheimer, the director of planning
and development for the City of Quincy says that they would be
teaming up with Amren Illinois to remove the old power lines and
poles along the riverfront and bury new power lines in their
place.
Parts of the project's cost will be split
between the utility company and the city, if the grant is
received. The project itself would be carried out in several
phases........

Mississippi River At Dorena, Missouri
Dorena-Hickman Ferry To Remain
Closed........
The Dorena-Hickman Ferry was temporarily shut
down Sunday afternoon to allow some mechanical issues to be
repaired. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said that some
additional repair work is needed and the ferry will remain out
of service into the weekend.
Captain Jeremy Newsom says that the delays
are due to the time needed to complete the necessary repair work
in addition to the amount of time it will take for the
replacement parts to arrive.
The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is the only direct
route between Missouri and Kentucky. When the ferry is shut
down, it creates a 75 mile detour that adds some 90 minutes to
commutes........

Some Highlights of This
Week's
LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS
District 8 MRS
UPDATED
June 10, 2020
Mississippi
River System
MISSISSIPPI RIVER
UPPER
MISSISSIPPI RIVER - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following areas are in the high water watch phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Pool 17 (Mile 457.1 – Mile 437.1),
Pool 18 (Mile 437.0 – Mile 410.5),
Pool 20 (Mile 364.1 – Mile 343.2),
Pool 24 (Mile 301.1 – Mile 273.4),
Pool 25 (Mile 273.3 – Mile 241.4) and
Pool 26 (Mile 241.3 – Mile 200.5).
Tow boats are advised to favor the center of the channel and
proceed at their slowest safe operating speed based upon the
current conditions to minimize their wake damage to personal
property. Tow boat operators should be experienced in high water
operations, exercise caution in all passing and meeting
situations and be mindful of all charted bridge navigational
clearances. Down-streaming operations are not recommended. Drift
and debris may pose an obstruction to navigation and drag buoys
off station, so remain cautious while transiting.
MILE 183.2 - BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION
Merchants Railroad Bridge; Work barges continue excavating
around both left and right descending navigation piers and the
right descending pier of the center span. Work barges should not
encroach more than 50 feet into the navigation channel, at any
time. For work barge locations,
mariners are encouraged to contact the onsite work boat M/V
KATHERINE OHARA via VHF-FM Channel 6 or 16 or by phone at (217)
248-9077
ILLINOIS RIVER
ILLINOIS
WATERWAY CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following areas are in the high water watch phase IAW
the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 7 Peoria (Mile 187.0 – Mile 145.6),
Zone 5 Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0),
Zone 4 Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3),
Zone 3 Meredosia (Mile 80.2 – Mile 50.0),
Zone 2 Hardin (Mile 49.9 – Mile 10.0) and
Zone 1 Grafton (Mile 9.9 – Mile 0.0).
The following area is in the high water action phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 6 Copperas Creek (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0).
Mariners are requested to minimize wake and transit at the
slowest safe speed, due to levee maintenance in the following
locations.
Mile 108.3 – Mile 104.7, minimum wake requested until the Havana
Gauge is below 17 feet and the Beardstown Gauge is below 18
feet.
Mile 161.6 – Mile 159.9, minimum wake requested until the Peoria
Gauge is below 17 feet.
In these zones, recreational traffic is strongly discouraged due
to debris and swift currents. Laying up on saturated levees is
prohibited. Avoid pushing in along the RDB, in the vicinity of
Mile 167.0, due to railroad tracks in close proximity to the
bank line. High water and drift potential may
be encountered in these areas. Mariners are advised to minimize
wake and exercise caution. Mariners should be experienced in
high water conditions and avoid down-streaming operations if
possible. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in
debris and maneuver appropriately.
Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have
occurred and take appropriate actions to prevent breakaways.
Exercise caution in all meeting and overtaking situations, as
swift currents may be present. Navigational buoys may have been
dragged off station, so remain
cautious while transiting.

Illinois Department Of Natural

Waterfowl Blind Drawings Called Off For
This Season........
Officials with the Illinois Department of
Natural Resources have announced the decision to cancel all
waterfowl blind drawings for 2020 amid the continuing COVID-19
outbreak.
Current blind holders will be allowed to
maintain their blinds throughout the 2020-2021 waterfowl hunting
season. Waterfowl blind drawings will resume in 2021.
The blind drawings require hunters to be
physically present to claim their blind if their name is drawn,
and the IDNR believes that the drawings will potentially violate
social distancing and crowd size requirements........

Missouri River Outlook
Full Shipping Season Expected........
Since early spring, the forecast for major
flooding along the Missouri River system has been walked back
considerably, even though some localized heavy rainfall has
resulted in minor to moderate flooding in some areas of the
Missouri River System.
According to Doug Kluck, the central region
director-climate services for the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration stated that flows were close to
slightly above normal for this time of year.
The March 15th system storage check indicated
full service flow support for navigation along the Missouri
River for the first half of the 2020 navigation season. Full
service flow support is typically sufficient to provide a 9 foot
deep by 300 foot wide navigation channel. Flow support for the
second half of the 2020 navigation season will be based upon the
July 1 system storage check.........

Lake Of The Ozarks
Boaters Leap Into Action After PWC
Accident........
Justin Lakso was aboard his Sea Ray Sundancer
with family and friends on Saturday, June 13th when they watched
in horror as a personal watercraft carrying two men slammed into
the starboard side of the Envision in front of them.
Lakso took over the helm from his son and
eased up on the scene. One of his passengers, nurse Jennifer
Scott and her husband Jesse leapt into the water to assist the
PWC's occupants, 21 year old Jack Koerner, starting safety for
the Iowa Hawkeyes, and 21 year old Cole Coffin, who were face
down in the water.
The Scotts were joined in the water by a
woman from the Envision, whom Lakso believed had some emergency
training as well. The three kept the badly injured and
unconscious men face up and secure until emergency responders
could arrive on scene. The injured men were wearing life
jackets........

Million DOT Grant........
On Monday, the U.S. Department of
Transportation announced that America's Central Port in Granite
City, Illinois will be receiving a $1.3 million grant to expand

The funding comes from America's Marine
Highway Program and is intended to help expand container freight
traffic in the St. Louis region of the Mississippi and Illinois

the health and safety of our crew and passengers.
We received a call today from the U.S. Coast Guard advising us
that all passengers will be required to stay in their vehicles
when crossing the ferry. This is in response to the restrictions

effect until the restrictions are lifted.

The Complete Marine
03-23-20
St. Charles Boat & Motor update:
Due to the unprecedented time that
the country is experiencing, we are implementing some additions
to our normal routine:
At this time, we remain open for business, operating with a
small staff. For the safety of our customers, our staff, and our
families, in addition to our normal operations, we are offering
some alternative means of interacting with us as well – for both
purchasing products (from parts to a new boat) and for your
service needs.
If you’d like to shop any new or used inventory with us with
minimized social interaction, we can schedule individual
appointments or send you a virtual video tour of a unit. You can
always shop our inventory on our website as well, at
www.stcharlesboat.com. We currently have some huge discounts
on our in stock inventory! If you’re interested in a private
appointment, please e-mail us at zeke@stcharlesboat.com or you
can call us at 636-947-0106 during normal business hours.
For your service needs, we can schedule a touchless drop off and
pick-up with you. For touchless drop off or pick-up, e-mail
Jerry at jerry@stcharlesboat.com or Zeke at zeke@stcharlesboat.com
for scheduling and instructions.
We realize that this too will pass and we can return to a more
normal routine, which means getting back to boating for many of
us!
We will keep our customer’s updated by posting on our
website and
Facebook page.

Mississippi River Near Wood River,
Illinois
Camp River Dubois Hosted Spring
Rendezvous........
Over the weekend, re-enactors depicting the
time period between 1600 and 1890 participated in the annual
Spring Rendezvous at Camp River DuBois. The re-enactors were
dressed in period clothing and engaged in period activities.
Despite the recent COVID-19 outbreak and the
resultant rules, none of the re-enactors wore masks, period
correct or otherwise. The participants did exercise social
distancing by trying to stay further away from their fellow
archers, bakers, campers, crafters, shooters and traders.
The Spring Rendezvous was held at Camp River
DuBois, which is a replica of Meriwether Lewis and William
Clark's 1803 - 1804 winter camp near the location of current day
Illinois Route 3 and Illinois 143 in Wood River........

Mississippi River Near Davenport, Iowa
Corn Belt Port Decision May Come
Soon.........
Robert Sinkler, the head of the effort to
have the ports within the greater Quad Cities region merged into
a single port district say that the final decision on the
proposal by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers may be made within
the next two weeks.
The project is referred to as the Mississippi
River Ports of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, and if
approved, the 222 mile long area between Keokuk and Dubuque,
Iowa would become the 68th largest statistical port area in the
United States.
The proposed port district would be the
second largest port district along the Mississippi River between
St. Louis and Minneapolis/St. Paul. If the project is given the
green light, the terminal data would be consolidated which could
help with recognition, funding and coordination of
infrastructure improvement efforts........

Calhoun Ferry Company’s priority is
the health and safety of our crew and passengers.
We received a call today from the U.S. Coast Guard advising us
that all passengers will be required to stay in their vehicles
when crossing the ferry. This is in response to the restrictions

effect until the restrictions are lifted.
We are cleaning and disinfecting all crew areas and all ferry
passes as we receive them.
Starting tomorrow 03/21/2020 we will be reducing our hours to

Charles Boat & Motor
The Complete Marine
03-23-20
St. Charles Boat & Motor update:
Due to the unprecedented time that
the country is experiencing, we are implementing some additions
to our normal routine:
At this time, we remain open for business, operating with a
small staff. For the safety of our customers, our staff, and our
families, in addition to our normal operations, we are offering
some alternative means of interacting with us as well – for both
purchasing products (from parts to a new boat) and for your
service needs.
If you’d like to shop any new or used inventory with us with
minimized social interaction, we can schedule individual
appointments or send you a virtual video tour of a unit. You can
always shop our inventory on our website as well, at
www.stcharlesboat.com. We currently have some huge discounts
on our in stock inventory! If you’re interested in a private
appointment, please e-mail us at zeke@stcharlesboat.com or you
can call us at 636-947-0106 during normal business hours.
For your service needs, we can schedule a touchless drop off and
pick-up with you. For touchless drop off or pick-up, e-mail
Jerry at jerry@stcharlesboat.com or Zeke at zeke@stcharlesboat.com
for scheduling and instructions.
We realize that this too will pass and we can return to a more
normal routine, which means getting back to boating for many of
us!
We will keep our customer’s updated by posting on our
website and

The Picture of the Day.....

a question.
RiverBill,
We know things in the world have been a little crazy this year,
but we were surprised to see the drastic change that had taken
place in the Boathouse Sunset photo you posted last week. It
appears that the sun is now setting in the north! Has someone
been fiddling with photoshop or do we have our bearings off by
67 degrees or so?
As always - thanks for the great website and helpful
information!
Happy and Safe Boating!
Kent Koenemann of "Sara Smile"
Yacht Club of St. Louis
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RiverBill says..... Good Question.
The Mississippi River dose not run
straight North and South and Pool 26 is in the "Riverbend Area."
Dardeene Slough runs pretty much North as it passes by the
Boathouse.
The photo in question is from the
Boathouse facebook page and I seriously doubt that it has been
photoshopped.
Below is a map showing the Boathouse and
Dardenne Slough with a red arrow showing the general direction
the photo was taken.
The moon rise moves around in the sky and
I think that is probably it in the photo picking up a reflection
from the setting sun.
Comments anyone ?
Hey Bill,
Pretty sure my home on the water will be condemned, guess I’ll
Mississippi River Near East Alton,
Illinois
Officials Investigating Car Recovered
From The River........
Members of the East Alton Police Department
are investigating how an unoccupied vehicle ended up in the
Mississippi River on Friday night. A towboat operator
reportedly spotted the sinking car around 7 pm near the former
Dynegy plant along the Berm Highway.
The Hillsboro Fire Department Dive Team was
called out to the river to assist with the recovery of the
vehicle. When the 2013 Kia Optima was removed from the water,
the vehicle was unoccupied. Very few personal items were found
in the car.
The vehicle's owner was contacted, and stated
that she was unaware that the car had gone missing. She
acknowledged that the keys had been left in the car and reported
it stolen once advised of the situation........
Mississippi River Near Hannibal,
Missouri
Marion, Ralls County Forming Port
Authority.........
The Marion County Commission recently signed
a cooperative agreement with Ralls County in order to create a
regional port authority. Corey Mehaffy, the executive director
of the Hannibal Regional Economic Development Council says that
the agreement will be mutually beneficial for both counties.
Mehaffy said that many of the region's larger
employers indicated that they underutilize the Mississippi River
as an asset due to the lack of port facilities. He adds that
the regional port will provide additional benefits to both Ralls
and Marion Counties.
One advantage will be the designation as a
federal trade zone, which will allow businesses that import
product a competitive edge by allowing them to defer, reduce and
or eliminate customs duties, improving their cash flow, reducing
production costs and raising their overall profit
margins........
old men, one of which is Iowa starting safety Jack Koerner, were
seriously injured in a boating accident on the Lake of the
Ozarks.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports
that Koerner and Cole Coffin were riding a 2015 Sea Doo personal
watercraft which struck the starboard side of a 1995 Envision
piloted by Todd Gore.
The boat sustained minor damage, but the Sea
Doo was seriously damaged. Both men aboard the PWC were
seriously injured. Koerner was taken to Lake Regional Hospital,
Some Highlights of This
Week's
LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS
District 8 MRS
UPDATED
June 10, 2020
Mississippi
River System
MISSISSIPPI RIVER
UPPER
MISSISSIPPI RIVER - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following areas are in the high water watch phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Pool 17 (Mile 457.1 – Mile 437.1),
Pool 18 (Mile 437.0 – Mile 410.5),
Pool 20 (Mile 364.1 – Mile 343.2),
Pool 24 (Mile 301.1 – Mile 273.4),
Pool 25 (Mile 273.3 – Mile 241.4) and
Pool 26 (Mile 241.3 – Mile 200.5).
Tow boats are advised to favor the center of the channel and
proceed at their slowest safe operating speed based upon the
current conditions to minimize their wake damage to personal
property. Tow boat operators should be experienced in high water
operations, exercise caution in all passing and meeting
situations and be mindful of all charted bridge navigational
clearances. Down-streaming operations are not recommended. Drift
and debris may pose an obstruction to navigation and drag buoys
off station, so remain cautious while transiting.
MILE 183.2 - BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION
Merchants Railroad Bridge; Work barges continue excavating
around both left and right descending navigation piers and the
right descending pier of the center span. Work barges should not
encroach more than 50 feet into the navigation channel, at any
time. For work barge locations,
mariners are encouraged to contact the onsite work boat M/V
KATHERINE OHARA via VHF-FM Channel 6 or 16 or by phone at (217)
248-9077
ILLINOIS RIVER
ILLINOIS
WATERWAY CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following areas are in the high water watch phase IAW
the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 7 Peoria (Mile 187.0 – Mile 145.6),
Zone 5 Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0),
Zone 4 Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3),
Zone 3 Meredosia (Mile 80.2 – Mile 50.0),
Zone 2 Hardin (Mile 49.9 – Mile 10.0) and
Zone 1 Grafton (Mile 9.9 – Mile 0.0).
The following area is in the high water action phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 6 Copperas Creek (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0).
Mariners are requested to minimize wake and transit at the
slowest safe speed, due to levee maintenance in the following
locations.
Mile 108.3 – Mile 104.7, minimum wake requested until the Havana
Gauge is below 17 feet and the Beardstown Gauge is below 18
feet.
Mile 161.6 – Mile 159.9, minimum wake requested until the Peoria
Gauge is below 17 feet.
In these zones, recreational traffic is strongly discouraged due
to debris and swift currents. Laying up on saturated levees is
prohibited. Avoid pushing in along the RDB, in the vicinity of
Mile 167.0, due to railroad tracks in close proximity to the
bank line. High water and drift potential may
be encountered in these areas. Mariners are advised to minimize
wake and exercise caution. Mariners should be experienced in
high water conditions and avoid down-streaming operations if
possible. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in
debris and maneuver appropriately.
Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have
occurred and take appropriate actions to prevent breakaways.
Exercise caution in all meeting and overtaking situations, as
swift currents may be present. Navigational buoys may have been
dragged off station, so remain
cautious while transiting.
Sea Tow Survey Predicts Boater Behavior
During 2020.........
On the heels of the COVID-19 outbreak, the
summer boating season has arrived and the biggest question
across the recreational marine industry is what will this
boating season bring?
Earlier this month, Sea Tow Services
International, Inc. surveyed some 5,000 of it's members in an
effort to better understand the future actions of boaters and
how their habits may change in the wake of the COVID-19
pandemic. A significant number of boaters intend to continue
social distancing and observing other safety measures including:
○ 54% plan to maintain distance at boat
ramps, marinas and fuel docks.
○ 35% will boat only with those in their household or those
they have been quarantining with.
○ 32% will “expand [their] quarantine circle” to include more
family and close friends boating with them.
○ 31% will stay in local waters with no travel to other
marinas, cities, etc.
○ 30% will not raft up with other boats
Missouri River Management
No Flooding Forecasted Despite Above
Normal Runoff........
Even though the runoff into the Missouri
River System will be above average, it is not expected to come
close to the record levels of runoff seen during the past
several years.
According to Ryan Larson of the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers in Omaha, they are continuing to see heavy
inflows and are forecasting another above average year. Larson
adds that drier conditions are spreading across the Upper
Missouri River basin.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers states that
releases from the Gavins Point Dam are expected to remain around
33,000 cubic feet per second for the majority of the
summer........
COVID-19 Takes It's Toll On The
"Floating" Industry........
All across the state, the COVID-19 outbreak
has forced river rental operators small and large to come up
with cleaning plans, encouraging social distancing as well as
adopting other safety measures while waiting for the crowds to
return.
The popular floating season along Missouri's
waterways, including the Black, Big Piney, Gasconade and Meramec
Rivers, typically begins over the Memorial Day Weekend and runs
through Labor Day Weekend.
River rental operators have had to develop
extensive plans for cleaning the rental watercraft and
equipment, as well as the shuttles that ferry paddlers and
floaters to the rivers........
Some Highlights of This
Week's
LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS
District 8 MRS
UPDATED
June 10, 2020
Mississippi
River System
MISSISSIPPI RIVER
UPPER
MISSISSIPPI RIVER - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following areas are in the high water watch phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Pool 17 (Mile 457.1 – Mile 437.1),
Pool 18 (Mile 437.0 – Mile 410.5),
Pool 20 (Mile 364.1 – Mile 343.2),
Pool 24 (Mile 301.1 – Mile 273.4),
Pool 25 (Mile 273.3 – Mile 241.4) and
Pool 26 (Mile 241.3 – Mile 200.5).
Tow boats are advised to favor the center of the channel and
proceed at their slowest safe operating speed based upon the
current conditions to minimize their wake damage to personal
property. Tow boat operators should be experienced in high water
operations, exercise caution in all passing and meeting
situations and be mindful of all charted bridge navigational
clearances. Down-streaming operations are not recommended. Drift
and debris may pose an obstruction to navigation and drag buoys
off station, so remain cautious while transiting.
MILE 183.2 - BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION
Merchants Railroad Bridge; Work barges continue excavating
around both left and right descending navigation piers and the
right descending pier of the center span. Work barges should not
encroach more than 50 feet into the navigation channel, at any
time. For work barge locations,
mariners are encouraged to contact the onsite work boat M/V
KATHERINE OHARA via VHF-FM Channel 6 or 16 or by phone at (217)
248-9077
ILLINOIS RIVER
ILLINOIS
WATERWAY CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following areas are in the high water watch phase IAW
the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 7 Peoria (Mile 187.0 – Mile 145.6),
Zone 5 Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0),
Zone 4 Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3),
Zone 3 Meredosia (Mile 80.2 – Mile 50.0),
Zone 2 Hardin (Mile 49.9 – Mile 10.0) and
Zone 1 Grafton (Mile 9.9 – Mile 0.0).
The following area is in the high water action phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 6 Copperas Creek (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0).
Mariners are requested to minimize wake and transit at the
slowest safe speed, due to levee maintenance in the following
locations.
Mile 108.3 – Mile 104.7, minimum wake requested until the Havana
Gauge is below 17 feet and the Beardstown Gauge is below 18
feet.
Mile 161.6 – Mile 159.9, minimum wake requested until the Peoria
Gauge is below 17 feet.
In these zones, recreational traffic is strongly discouraged due
to debris and swift currents. Laying up on saturated levees is
prohibited. Avoid pushing in along the RDB, in the vicinity of
Mile 167.0, due to railroad tracks in close proximity to the
bank line. High water and drift potential may
be encountered in these areas. Mariners are advised to minimize
wake and exercise caution. Mariners should be experienced in
high water conditions and avoid down-streaming operations if
possible. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in
debris and maneuver appropriately.
Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have
occurred and take appropriate actions to prevent breakaways.
Exercise caution in all meeting and overtaking situations, as
swift currents may be present. Navigational buoys may have been
dragged off station, so remain
cautious while transiting.
Meramec River Near Valley Park,
Missouri
Flood Stage Levels Are Being Updated
Along The Lower Meramec River........
The National Weather Service recently
announced that they will be updating the flood stage at two
river gauges along the Lower Meramec River in St. Louis County.
At Valley Park, the flood stages from minor
to major will be raised by two feet. The reason for the change
is that the current flood stage levels were set in the 1950s,
and the roads and homes affected by to hose river levels no
longer exist.
A bit downstream at Fenton, however, the
flood stage is set to be lowered. A river gauge was placed
there since the flooding of 2016, and officials have determined
the need to lower the flood stage to 23 feet........
Lake OF The Ozarks
Experts: Too Soon To Shut The Book On
LOTO
One COVID Case Reported In K.C.....
On Thursday, Dr. Hilary Babcock, director of
infection prevention for BJC HealthCare reported that no new
cases of the COVID-19 virus have been come from the large crowds
at the Lake of the Ozarks over the Memorial Day Weekend, but
that does not mean that sunshine and Bud Light can prevent the
spread of the disease.
Dr. Babcock said that the COVID-19 disease
would become her favorite infectious disease if all that were
needed to prevent the disease's spread was sunlight and beer.
In reality, Dr. Babcock says that it is too soon to tell the
effects on the spread of the disease, and increases may be
difficult to pinpoint, due to the number of tourists heading to
the lake from across the Midwest.
She adds that they are not able to be certain
that there have been no cases associated with the Lake of the
Ozarks, and there may still be cases that can be attributed to,
or traced back to the Lake of the Ozarks. On Thursday, Kansas
City health officials identified a resident that has tested
positive for the COVID-19 virus after spending the Memorial Day
Weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks.........
Calhoun Ferry Company’s priority is
the health and safety of our crew and passengers.
We received a call today from the U.S. Coast Guard advising us
that all passengers will be required to stay in their vehicles
when crossing the ferry. This is in response to the restrictions
placed on gatherings of 10 or more people. This will remain in
effect until the restrictions are lifted.
We are cleaning and disinfecting all crew areas and all ferry
passes as we receive them.
Starting tomorrow 03/21/2020 we will be reducing our hours to
eliminate the late night shift on Friday and Saturday. This will
remain in effect until the restrictions are lifted. Hours will
be Monday through Saturday 5am to 9pm and Sunday 8am to 9pm.
We will all get through this together by working together for a
better tomorrow. Stay safe!
St.
Charles Boat & Motor
The Complete Marine
03-23-20
St. Charles Boat & Motor update:
Due to the unprecedented time that
the country is experiencing, we are implementing some additions
to our normal routine:
At this time, we remain open for business, operating with a
small staff. For the safety of our customers, our staff, and our
families, in addition to our normal operations, we are offering
some alternative means of interacting with us as well – for both
purchasing products (from parts to a new boat) and for your
service needs.
If you’d like to shop any new or used inventory with us with
minimized social interaction, we can schedule individual
appointments or send you a virtual video tour of a unit. You can
always shop our inventory on our website as well, at
www.stcharlesboat.com. We currently have some huge discounts
on our in stock inventory! If you’re interested in a private
appointment, please e-mail us at zeke@stcharlesboat.com or you
can call us at 636-947-0106 during normal business hours.
For your service needs, we can schedule a touchless drop off and
pick-up with you. For touchless drop off or pick-up, e-mail
Jerry at jerry@stcharlesboat.com or Zeke at zeke@stcharlesboat.com
for scheduling and instructions.
We realize that this too will pass and we can return to a more
normal routine, which means getting back to boating for many of
us!
We will keep our customer’s updated by posting on our
website and
Facebook page.
Wanted to share some pics of the ever changing scenery Tuesday
night. Some people shy away from "rain" or "showers expected"
predictions, when actually it provides some spectacular weather
watching! And after a relaxing rain, always a sunset!!
I say come do some deck drinking and dining at one of the many
establishments on our beautiful river.
Some Highlights of This
Week's
LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS
District 8 MRS
UPDATED
June 03, 2020
Mississippi
River System
MISSISSIPPI RIVER
UPPER
MISSISSIPPI RIVER - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following areas are in the high water watch phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Pool 24 (Mile 301.1 – Mile 273.4),
Pool 25 (Mile 273.3 – Mile 241.4) and
Pool 26 (Mile 241.3 – Mile 200.5).
Tow boat operators should be experienced in high water
operations, exercise caution in all passing and meeting
situations and be mindful of all charted bridge navigational
clearances. Down-streaming operations are not recommended.
Drift and debris may
pose an obstruction to
navigation and drag buoys off station, so remain cautious
while transiting.
UPPER MISSISSIPPI
RIVER - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
The following area
is in the extreme high water action phase IAW the Western Rivers
WAP Annex:
Zone 28 (Mile 185.4 – Mile 179.0).
Within the St. Louis Harbor (Mile 184.0 – Mile 179.0), tows
SHALL avoid carrying barges on the hip and have a minimum of 250
h.p., for each loaded barge and 2,000 tons of cargo. A loaded
barge is considered to be a barge with up to 2,000 tons of
cargo. If a towing vessel has barges in tow, loaded to more than
2,000 tons, it should have a minimum of 250 h.p., for every
2,000 tons of cargo. South-bound tows greater than 600 feet in
length, excluding the towboat, should limit their transit to
daylight hours. North-bound tows SHALL have enough h.p., to
maintain a minimum speed of 3 MPH, on approach to the St. Louis
Bridges. Mariners are advised to favor the center of the channel
and proceed at their slowest safe operating speed based upon the
prevailing conditions to minimize wake damage to personal
property. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in
debris in the water and maneuver appropriately. Buildup of
debris may have occurred in fleeting areas. Appropriate action
should be taken to prevent barge breakaways. Exercise caution in
all passing and meeting situations.
Drift and debris may be
a hazard to navigation and drag buoys off station.
ILLINOIS RIVER
ILLINOIS
WATERWAY CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following area is in the
high water watch phase IAW the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 2 Hardin (Mile 49.9 – Mile 10.0).
The following areas are in the high water action phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 7 Peoria (Mile 187.0 – Mile 145.6), mariners are requested
to minimize their wake until the river drops to 17 feet,
Zone 6 Copperas Creek (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0),
Zone 5 Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0), mariners are requested
to minimize their wake until the river drops to 17 feet,
Zone 4 Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3), mariners are
requested to minimize their wake until the river drops to 18
feet,
Zone 3 Meredosia (Mile 80.2 – Mile 50.0) and
Zone 1 Grafton (Mile 9.9 – Mile 0.0).
Mariners are requested to minimize wake and transit at the
slowest safe speed, due to levee maintenance in the following
locations.
Mile 108.3 – Mile 104.7, minimum wake requested until the Havana
Gauge is below 17 feet and the Beardstown Gauge is below 18
feet.
Mile 161.6 – Mile 159.9, minimum wake requested until the Peoria
Gauge is below 17 feet.
In these zones,
recreational traffic is strongly discouraged due to
debris and swift currents. Laying up on saturated levees is
prohibited. Avoid pushing in along the RDB, in the vicinity of
Mile 167.0, due to railroad tracks in close proximity to the
bank line. High water and drift potential may be encountered in
these areas. Mariners are advised to minimize wake and exercise
caution. Laying up on saturated levees is prohibited. Mariners
should be experienced in high water conditions and avoid
down-streaming operations if possible. Mariners should remain
vigilant to an increase in debris and maneuver appropriately. Be
aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have
occurred and take appropriate actions to prevent breakaways.
Exercise caution in all meeting and overtaking situations, as
swift currents may be present. Navigational buoys may have been
dragged off station, so remain cautious while transiting
MISSOURI RIVER
MISSOURI
RIVER - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY.
The following areas are in the high water watch phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Brunswick Reach (Mile 300.0 – Mile 200.0),
Jefferson Reach (Mile 200.0 – Mile 100.0) and
Washington Reach (Mile 100.0 – Mile 0.0).
Towboat operators should exercise caution, minimize wake where
possible and be experienced in high water operations, as high
water and drift may be experienced. Exercise caution when
down-streaming, be aware of bridge clearances. Mariners should
favor the center of the navigation channel, avoid laying up on
levees and pre-identify lay-up areas in the event of a river
closure or barge breakaway. Fleeting areas should have a towboat
attend fleets at all times and have a breakaway plan in place.
Drift and debris may
pose an obstruction to navigation and drag buoys off station,
so remain cautious while transiting.
Missouri Department of Conservation
Do Not Dump Aquarium or Garden
Pond Fish Into Missouri Waterways.......
The Missouri Department of Conservation
recently requested that people refrain from dumping aquarium or
garden pond fish into Missouri lakes, ponds, rivers or streams.
MoDOC staff recently caught large, non-native
koi fish during a fish sampling exercise at the Sugar Creek
Conservation in northeastern Missouri. Out of the 20 native
species caught during sampling, all were undersized and in fewer
numbers than expected.
The MoDOC believes that the release of
non-native fish into the environment can harm the native
species. The belief is that the joi fish stunted the size and
population of native fish because they eat the same food as the
young native fish........
Mississippi River At St. Louis,
Missouri
Riverfront Riverboats Reopened
Wednesday........
After being shuttered for several months due
to the coronavirus outbreak, the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch
have reopened with new health and safety protocols.
Some of the new protocols include passengers
answer health questions prior to boarding and all passengers
must wear masks. The number of people allowed on each cruise
has been reduced, and new sanitization procedures have been put
into place.
With the decreased passenger counts, it is
recommended that reservations be made to guarantee a spot on the
riverboats........
After Many Delays, MLK Bridge To Reopen
In August........
On Wednesday, the Illinois Department of
Transportation announced that the Martin Luther King Bridge
spanning the Mississippi River at St. Louis will be reopening in
August, following months of delays.
The MLK Bridge was originally to reopen in
Calhoun Ferry Company’s priority is
the health and safety of our crew and passengers.
We received a call today from the U.S. Coast Guard advising us
that all passengers will be required to stay in their vehicles
when crossing the ferry. This is in response to the restrictions
placed on gatherings of 10 or more people. This will remain in
effect until the restrictions are lifted.
We are cleaning and disinfecting all crew areas and all ferry
passes as we receive them.
Starting tomorrow 03/21/2020 we will be reducing our hours to
eliminate the late night shift on Friday and Saturday. This will
remain in effect until the restrictions are lifted. Hours will
be Monday through Saturday 5am to 9pm and Sunday 8am to 9pm.
We will all get through this together by working together for a
better tomorrow. Stay safe!
St.
Charles Boat & Motor
The Complete Marine
03-23-20
St. Charles Boat & Motor update:
Due to the unprecedented time that
the country is experiencing, we are implementing some additions
to our normal routine:
At this time, we remain open for business, operating with a
small staff. For the safety of our customers, our staff, and our
families, in addition to our normal operations, we are offering
some alternative means of interacting with us as well – for both
purchasing products (from parts to a new boat) and for your
service needs.
If you’d like to shop any new or used inventory with us with
minimized social interaction, we can schedule individual
appointments or send you a virtual video tour of a unit. You can
always shop our inventory on our website as well, at
www.stcharlesboat.com. We currently have some huge discounts
on our in stock inventory! If you’re interested in a private
appointment, please e-mail us at zeke@stcharlesboat.com or you
can call us at 636-947-0106 during normal business hours.
For your service needs, we can schedule a touchless drop off and
pick-up with you. For touchless drop off or pick-up, e-mail
Jerry at jerry@stcharlesboat.com or Zeke at zeke@stcharlesboat.com
for scheduling and instructions.
We realize that this too will pass and we can return to a more
normal routine, which means getting back to boating for many of
us!
We will keep our customer’s updated by posting on our
website and
Facebook page.
