The owner of the boat and a second man were on a 1,200 mile trip from Webber Falls, Oklahoma to Chicago when the boat was stolen from the Red Star Boat Dock area.

The men located Furtrell and the missing boat with the help of some Cape Girardeau boaters.  After a high speed chase, the men were able to reclaim their boat and resume their trip north........

Some River Changes May Be Coming.........

Congressman Sam Graves stopped in Hannibal, Missouri to discuss the progress of the Water Resources Development Act of 2020 through Congress.  Most of Graves' time was spent listening to river levee district officials' concerns.

While the specific issues varied from levee district to levee district, the source of levee district officials source of frustration was often the same - the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Graves revealed that he is a member of a group in Congress that is studying taking the inland water program away from the Corps and transferring responsibility to the Department of Transportation........

The Mississippi Earthtones Festival is slated to be held this year on September 19th, however, the event will be considerably scaled down from past years.  The street festival is gone this year and in it's place are a small series of events including a nearly 4 hour long movie.

The movie shown during Mississippi Earthtones Festival will be the director's cut of Woodstock:  Three Days of Peace and Music.  The film will be shown at the Henry Street parking lot, which is the same lot used for the Farmer's and Artisan's Market.

Other events scheduled for the Mississippi Earthtones Festival include a GPS-based scavenger hunt and an art exhibit.  The next week will be the annual trash cleanup........

River History....

September 10, 1991 in River History

The Alton Belle Casino Riverboat opened its doors at the Alton Riverfront and made its maiden cruise on the Mississippi River. The boat had 3 decks, accommodate 600 passengers and offered 296 slot machines and 22 table games. The riverboat cruised the river until June of 1999 when it was replaced by the lager (ship) Alton Bell Casino II.

A Look Back At The Opening Of The Mark Twain Bridge.........

During the first week of September 1958, the new Missouri River Bridge at St. Charles, Missouri was opened to traffic in phases.  The new span replaced the 1904-vintage St. Charles Rock Road Bridge downriver that had become overwhelmed by 16,000 vehicles daily.

The new $8.5 million bridge was a key part of the Mark Twain Expressway, which eventually became Interstate 70.  The 24 mile, $97 million Mark Twain Expressway from downtown St. Louis into St. Charles paved the way for migration into St. Charles County and opened up a clear drive across the state........

Missouri River At Jefferson City, Missouri

Heartland Port Project Moving Ahead Quickly........

The proponents of what is now being referred to as the Heartland Port along the Missouri River near Jefferson City, Missouri have been proceeding quickly. The proposed port would be an ideally located port geared towards Missouri's corn and soybean growers.

On May 15th the Missouri General Assembly approved the transfer of 116 acres of land from the state to the Heartland Port Authority.  The land is located between the Ike Skelton Training Center and the Algoa Correctional facility east of Jefferson City.

The next step for the port project is the utilization of a USDA Rural Business Development Grant that was recently awarded to the port for conceptual design and environmental work.  The $120,000 grant is slated for preliminary planning purposes........

A Successful Summer So Far For The Boathouse........

At the beginning of the summer, Toni Lutrell, owner of The Boathouse in St. Charles, was not sure how business was going to go during the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that making the correct decisions has been hard and stressful.

As the summer tourism season begins to wind down, Luttrell is able to say that she made the right decisions this season, as the changes made to operating hours and reducing capacity have led to a successful season.  The Boathouse never closed for a COVID case.

Lutrell says that she has not seen the river this busy since 2012.  She adds that they believe that the river has been everyone's "happy place" where they go to escape the world's troubles........

Headwaters Erosion Issues To Be Addressed After Tourism Season........

Tourists are flocking to Itasca State Park in Minnesota to check out the headwaters of the Mighty Mississippi River.  Some 500,000 visitors each year are walking across the rock dam that makes the end of Lake Itasca and the beginning of the Mississippi River.

The walk across the baby Mississippi River has gotten longer than it used to be, however, with half a million visitors per year dragging sand, gravel and dirt into the stream, the heavy foot traffic combined with the water flow scouring the shoreline has made the channel considerably wider.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will be narrowing the channel and shrinking it close to it's original size as part of a $35,000 restoration project slated to begin next month........

Man Taking Longboard Trip Down THe Mississippi River........

27 year old Daniel Plys of Duluth, Minnesota is taking a 2,500 mile long longboard trip from the headwaters of the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico to raise funds to end childhood hunger in the Twin Ports region.

Plys began his trip on Friday morning near Bemidji, and is longboarding his way to the Gulf to raise funds for his project 2,500 For Hunger.  The trip will take about 60 days, but the dream has been years in the making.

Plys lost his father 8 years ago to brain cancer, and to keep his legacy alive, the family founded Project Joy, an organization tasked with addressing the childhood hunger crisis in the Twin Ports.........

Boating, Fishing Participation Surges, Industry Facing Challenges........

According to Lindsey Davis, vice president of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, fishing license sales are surging this year, with some states experiencing double-digit increases year-over-year.

Davis said that 2020 has been a tumultuous but important year for outdoor recreation.  Back in May, the U.S. Census Bureau ranked the outdoor recreation industry the second most affected industry behind food and accommodations, hit some 31 percent harder than the national average.

There were some bright spots in the ORR's report, as 81 percent of Americans said that they have spent time outdoors during the pandemic; 31 percent of which was for the first time........

Silent-Yachts Proposes Resort Concept........

Solar powered catamaran builder Silent-Yachts has come up with a new venture intended to provide luxury resort experiences while leveraging their line of emissions free vessels.

Called Silent-Resorts, the manufacturer's 60 and 80 foot catamarans would be used as floating villas that would be moored at pre-engineered dockage adjacent to resort areas that will be powered exclusively on solar energy.

The plans include the previously mentioned dockage and reception areas in addition to all the amenities one would expect from a resort, such as a restaurant, clubhouse, pool and spa and of course, beach access.........

Heavy Wakes Caused Five Boats To Sink During Trump Parade........

The Travis County Sheriff's Office reports that heavy wakes generated by other boats caused the sinking of five vessels participating in a parade supporting President Donald Trump on Saturday.

The Sheriff's Office says that the weather on Lake Travis, which is located west of Austin, Texas, was calm on Saturday, however, the large number of boats moving together created the large waves.

Out of the five boats that sank, three have been towed out and two others remain on the bottom of the lake.  The Sheriff's Office said that most of the boats taking on water, or even totally submerged, were able to be hooked up and towed prior to sinking to the bottom of the lake........

Work Goes On At Illinois River Locks........

In mid-July, officials extended the expected completion time for major rehabilitation and repair work at the LaGrange Lock and Dam along the Illinois River from September 30 to October 13th.  So far, that has been the only change to scheduled work on five locks and dams on the Illinois River.

The lock chambers at Marseilles and Starved Rock were dewatered during the closure and are undergoing major sill and anchorage modifications to guarantee the new miter gates fit correctly.

While the Illinois River's closure, crews are also installing bulkhead slots at Dresden Island and Brandon Road locks, and the Peoria Lock is being dewatered for a routine inspection and minor repairs........

Lightning Damage Prompts Repairs To Carp Barrier........

Later this month, repairs will be made to the Asian carp barrier along the Cumberland River as it sustained damage during a lightning strike.  The Bio-Acoustic Fish Fence had been installed at Barkley Lock last fall to prevent the invasive species from passing through the lock into Barkley Lake.

On March 12th, lightning struck the Bio-Acoustic Fish Fence, damaging it's communications systems.  The curtain of bubbles is still being turned on for one week and off the next, the barrier's lights and sound systems have been inoperative.  An additional lightning strike in May caused no further damage.

THe damage to the BAFF is expected to take approximately two weeks to repair, including sound surveys to verify that the sound system is operating correctly and the installation of surge protection equipment........

Two Boaters Caught A Massive One-Eyed Alligator........

On August 29th. John Ladner and his buddy Derek Stiglet were chasing a seven foot alligator in the marshes of the Jourdan River near Diamond Head, Mississippi, when they caught something a bit bigger.

THe pair were in Ladner's 14 foot jon boat when they lost the seven footer at a split in the marsh.  Stiglet spotted a gator eye and said "It's over there!".  It turned out that they ended up hooking a 477.6 pound, 12 foot long alligator.

They ended up having to call in a friend with a larger boat to accommodate the giant alligator and had to use a tractor to remove it once ashore.  A game warden determined that it was one of the largest captured around Diamondhead, Mississippi in the last 15 years........

Judge Recommends Dismissing Charges In Duck Boat Case........

On Friday, U.S. Magistrate judge David P. Rush recommended that the criminal charges be dismissed against three men indicted over a duck boat sinking that occurred on Table Rock Lake, killing 17 people 2 summers ago.

Judge Rush concluded that the charges should be dropped because Table Rock Lake is not considered to be a navigable waterway under admiralty law.

A 47 count indictment unsealed in June 2019 alleged Curtis Lanham, general manager of Ride the Ducks Branson, and Charles Baltzell, the manager on duty that day were guilty of a variety of neglect and misconduct charges.  An earlier indictment charged Scott McKee with failure to properly assess weather conditions prior to launching the duck boat and not advising passengers to use floatation devices as weather conditions worsened.........

Lake Of The Ozarks

September 5, 1929....  Work Began On The Lake....

On September 5, 1929, crews started clearing the land that would eventually become the Lake of the Ozarks. They cut down some 30,000 acres of timber and tore down the town of Linn Creek.

On May 30, 1931, the Lake of the Ozarks was officially opened to boat traffic.  About four months later, workers in the new Bagnell Dam threw the switches to start running current from the large hydroelectric generators.  The power generated was carried to a feeder station in Wellston and to present-day Park Hills.

The Union Electric Light and Power Co.'s dam on the Osage River was praised for it's ability to generate electricity.  As the dam was being constructed, some rough fishing camps cropped up, but it would be close to three decades for the Lake of the Ozarks to become the summertime playground it is today........

Celebrate Labor Day by practicing water safety

Celebrate Labor Day by practicing water safety

As many folks celebrate the final weeks of summer and transition to fall activities, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, wants to remind folks to take an extra moment to ensure that they are safe while out on the water.

With the onset of September comes cooler water temperatures and the additional risk of hypothermia. Any water temperature below 70 degrees is considered cold water, which means an increased risk of hypothermia.

So while you are out fishing, boating or waterfowl hunting this fall, please remember to play it safe and wear your life jacket. It could save your life.

To be safe on the water, Corps staff offer these additional safety tips:
  • Wear a life jacket;
  • Avoid consuming too much alcohol;
  • Tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you plan to be back;
  • Keep an eye on the weather as conditions can change with little warning;
  • Take a boater safety class;
  • Avoid restricted areas immediately above and below a lock and dam;
  • Have an anchor on board that can be quickly retrieved;
  • Monitor navigation traffic on Marine Channel 14;
  • If locking through a lock, listen to the lock operator at all times; and
  • Practice social distancing to ensure everyone is safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For more information on our water safety program, please visit https://www.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Recreation/Water-Safety/

or http://bobber.info/  for water safety educational materials.

The Mississippi Earthtones Festival Is Coming Up........

The Mississippi Earthtones Festival is a celebration of the Mississippi River via art, music and conservation.  The event is co-organized by Alton Main Street and the Sierra Club and will be held on the 3rd Saturday in September.

The 14th Annual Mississippi Earthtones Festival will be held on September 19th, although this year, COVID-19 precautions will require that the festival be presented through socially-distanced activities in lieu of the typical large gathering.

On September 19th, from 8 am to noon, attendees will be able to check out the Riverwork Project displayed at the Alton Farmers and Artisans' Market.  This is a textile exhibit that features the work of a number of regional artists.  The display explores the relationship between the region's rivers, their environmental character and the arts........

South River Near Annapolis, Maryland

"Casket" Floating In The River Actually A Dock........

Earlier this week, Maryland Police investigating reports of a casket spotted floating in the South River near Annapolis, Maryland ended up finding that the object's origin was a bit less macabre.

On Tuesday, a post to an Annapolis radio station's Facebook page showed a rectangular shaped object with flat sides and a curved top bobbing in the South River, which is a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.

The object, which resembled a coffin, generated concerns of a possible hazard in the water.  The Department of Natural Resources Police were sent out to the river to recover the object that turned out to be part of a dock........

Four Kentucky Counties Team Up For Port Project........

As part of their economic revitalization efforts, four western Kentucky counties have teamed up with the intention of constructing a river port just downstream from the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.

Back in July 2019, the Western Kentucky Riverport Authority registered with Kentucky's secretary of state as an official entity, replacing the Ballard-Wickliffe Port Authority.

Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman and Fulton Counties are working to establish the port at one of three sites in Wickliffe.  The preferred site is located on property owned by Phoenix Paper at Lower Mississippi Mile 950.2........

We will gather at the Clark Bridge in Alton and head off at 10am Saturday morning. We'll make our way along the river road and up to the Grafton flag.
*Can be seen from Longshots Saloon & Mike LaRosa's Cabana Bar, along the river road in Illinois and from riverfront locations in Grafton.
There's a growing interest in putting on one more Trump boat parade before the end of the season and it's now or never as the 2020 boating season comes to an end! Flags, costumes, banners and all manner of patriotism encouraged! Don't hold back!
Please feel free to invite ANYONE with a spirit of love for our country and good will towards others!

Man Traveling The Mississippi River Aboard A Homemade Raft........

Erich Mische recently set out to travel the length of the Mississippi River aboard a homemade raft dubbed the S.S. Hail Mary.  He is taking the trip to raise hope and awareness for his St. Paul, Minnesota-based non profit organization Spare Key, which raises funds for those in medical crises.

Spare Key has been particularly hard hit for funding, as they are not able to host traditional fundraising events because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Mische says that "Hope on the River" came about because he is a hopeful guy.  He believes that they can save Spare Key by making the journey and hoping people will donate.  Mische says that the trip also serves as a reminder that we are all in this together........

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois

Quincy Residents Develop Riverfront Wish List.........

During Wednesday night's Riverfront Master Plan Community workshop, Quincy residents discussed what they would like to see developed along the city's riverfront.

Paul Toenjes, a planner with SWT Designs, one of the consulting firms hired by the city, county and the Quincy Park District to help develop a riverfront master plan says that they want to use their imaginations in thinking great and small.  He used examples of other cities that used public and private investment to rejuvenate their riverfronts, including Alton and Grafton.

Bonnie Roy, another planner with SWT Designs says that they would like to make the riverfront unique to Quincy.  Some of the items on the wish list for the riverfront include a cruise ship dock, a botanical garden, a kayak and boat rental program, an amphitheater, a Ferris wheel and ice rink, more eateries, including kiosks and food trucks........

Boat Sales

75 Percent More Women Shopping For Boats........

Boat Trader is reporting that over the summer, there has been a huge increase in women shopping for boats. Year over year, the overall number of women visiting Boat Trader has increased by 75 percent.

Part of the reason for the increase has been attributed to women and mothers sequestered with kids, who have directed their families and friends to the water for some much-needed recreation.

Women have historically been the largest niche market of boaters and have played a significant role in the decision making process within their households when it comes to purchasing a boat.  Spurred on by the pandemic, more women are getting involved in the boat buying process sooner by researching and browsing boat inventories online........

Boat Sales

Boat Sales May Be Up But Customer Satisfaction Down........

Over the past several years, the marine industry has bemoaned the decrease in first time boat buyers, but the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about the first uptick in over a decade.

Bringing new boaters into the fold and keeping them boating are two different things.  While boat sales have increased, the customer satisfaction index ratings have decreased, almost at an inverse rate.

Matt Gruhn, president of the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas says that boat sales are at record levels, but that won't last forever,  He adds that they need to do what they can to keep these boaters into boating........

Stolen Car Ended Up In The River........

Thursday morning, a stolen car found it's way into the Mississippi River along the St. Louis riverfront.  Reportedly, the car's owner got out of the vehicle to speak with someone along the landing, leaving the car running.  A thief then jumped into the car and sped off.

The car's owner followed them until they got to the riverfront, where the suspects jumped out of the car.  The owner tried to stop the vehicle from rolling into the river, but was unsuccessful.

The owner says that the car is insured, and he is thankful that he got his car back........

Transport 360 Moving Wind Turbine Blades Up The Missouri River........

Transport 360, who operates the St. Joseph Regional Port, is currently partnering with the wind turbine industry to unload blades, towers and other components from barges at the St. Joseph Regional Port Facility.

The blades and other turbine parts are being shipped from various ports in the Gulf of Mexico via barge up the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to the St. Joseph Regional Port.

Transport 360 CEO Bill Becker says that the economics behind the project look good because the blades would otherwise have to be shipped one at a time along the highway system........

Mississippi River At Kimmswick, Missouri

Port Project Should Be Completed This Year........

The Jefferson County Port Authority's Board of Directors recently voted to accept a construction contract for a riverboat port facility along the Mississippi River at Kimmswick, Missouri.  The facility will be the home base for the Delta Queen riverboat, and will be able to handle other riverboats cruising the Mississippi River.

Neil Breitweiser, the Port Authority Executive Director said that the board had voted unanimously to award the $893,248 contract to XL Contracting of St. Peters to construct the Kimmswick Port.  He added that XL Contracting submitted the lowest bid for the project, had the best engineering appraisal and proved that they were up to the challenge of completing the project.

Breitweiser said that the project, which will include the river landing and a roadway leading to it, could begin in early September and is scheduled to be completed within 15 weeks.  He adds that the details are being worked out with XL Contracting that may affect the beginning and the cost of the project........

Fall Color Outlook

When Will The Leaves Change?

We just turned the calendar over to September, meaning that temperatures will start to cool down, as autumn is on the way, and with it comes the vibrant colors of fall foliage.

THe Smoky Mountains Fall Foliage Prediction Map forecasts that the leaves are expected to start changing colors in the northern portions of Missouri by the end of September.  Missouri is forecasted to hit peak fall colors between October 26 and November 3.

The northern reaches of Missouri will be a step ahead of the rest of the state throughout this year's color season.  Minimal changes in leaf colors are expected around September 28, with the southern portions of the state changing color about a week later.......

News Release From BoatUS

SPRINGFIELD, Va., September 2, 2020 – A new video from Wildlife Forever, funded in part by a BoatUS Foundation Grassroots Grant shows watersport boat owners how to easily follow “Clean, Drain, Dry” at the boat ramp to help prevent the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). Support for the video also came from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and boat retailer Marine Max.

“Today’s watersports enthusiasts enjoy riding big waves,” said BoatUS Foundation Director of Outreach Alanna Keating. “To help them substantially increase the wave height and size, some recreational boats utilize large internal ballast compartments or use external bags that are filled with water. However, after using and before moving on to another water body, these bags or tanks need to be thoroughly drained and dried for five days to eliminate any AIS from being spread to other waters.”

A recent study from the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center using AIS-infested water showed that even after draining, these ballast compartments could contain more than 12 cups of residual water. Wildlife Forever’s one-minute video concisely runs through each of steps necessary to help keep local waters clean by showing how to properly decontaminate a wake-style boat and its trailer.

As part of a coalition of recreational boating, environmental, conservation and government organizations, the BoatUS Foundation has championed “Clean, Drain, Dry” for the better part of a decade, promoting information on how to stop the spread of invasive species such as zebra mussels as part of the nonprofit’s free online Basic Boating Safety course and on its website at BoatUS.org/Invasives.

As part of the national Clean Drain Dry Initiative, Wildlife Forever also offers AIS educational materials and resources tailored to the wakesport, fishing and hunting industries, boat dealers, retail centers and launch ramp inspectors that help educate all outdoor recreational users on invasive species prevention.

The video can be found at youtube.com/watch?v=MOgPuCm3HYk.

The Gateway Arch Tram Rides Have Resumed........

Following an earlier delay, the Gateway Arch along the St. Louis riverfront is once again offering rides to the top of the attraction.  The Visitor Center, museum, Arch Store and Arch Cafe reopened in mid-June, and the tram rides and movie theater was to have reopened on July 8th.  An uptick in coronavirus numbers delayed the reopening.

Starting on Tuesday, September 1, The Tram Ride To The Top reopened to the public with some conditions.  face coverings are required for all riders aged 9 and up, and there will be a time limit of 10 minutes for people to enjoy the Arch observation deck.

Mike Ward, Gateway Arch National Park Superintendent says that they are excited to reopen more of the key experiences that the Gateway Arch National Park has to offer in a safe, efficient and responsible manner........

News Release From BoatUS

SPRINGFIELD, Va. September 1, 2020 – For the nation’s 12 million boat owners, Labor Day weekend is the last blast, with many enjoying the end-of-summer boating ritual with family and friends aboard, according to Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). The national advocacy, services and safety group cautions, however, that boating traffic and complacency could be safety concerns.

BoatUS’s nationwide on-water towing fleet, TowBoatUS, forecasts an increase in number of boaters on the water this three-day Labor Day holiday period. “Fourth of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day are the 1-2-3 peak boating weekends of the year in terms of the volume of requests from boaters needing towing assistance services,” said BoatUS Vice President of Towing Services John Condon. “This gives us a fair barometer of boating traffic. However, social distancing guidelines from COVID-19 and the subsequent increase in boat sales already has led our fleet to respond to an average of 20% more calls than last summer. This Labor Day holiday, all bets are off. If the weather holds, that number will likely go up.”

BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner says, “At this time of year complacency can set in. You’ve had a safe boating season up to now, but don’t let your guard down just yet.” Sensenbrenner offers these end-of-summer boating safety tips:

• Do you know where your flares are, or did you bury them under the inner tube in the back lazarette?
• Are life jackets serviceable, or has the dog eaten one? Have you periodically inspected any inflatable life jackets?
• Is your throwable (Type IV) personal floatation device still at the helm within easy reach, or did a guest hide it in the back under the stern seat?
• Are all of your navigation lights still working?
• Have you checked your U.S. Coast Guard Local Notice for Mariners lately to see if anything has changed, such as recent storms affecting navigation or infrastructure work?
• Over the course of the summer, have your boat trailer’s safety chains accidentally dragged on the pavement leaving them compromised? Are brake lights still operable?
• Want to learn more about boating safety? Take a free online boating safety course from the Foundation at BoatUS.org/Free.

News Release From BoatUS

The Best Holiday Gift for Boaters: A Tow Home
SPRINGFIELD, Va., August 31, 2020 – Last year, 76,418 recreational boaters had a reason to summon non emergency, routine assistance from TowBoatUS, the nation’s largest on-water towing service for recreational boaters. Accidentally running aground, dead batteries and dead engines were the chief culprits. Instead of giving your favorite boater a pair of socks for Christmas this year, give them something much more useful − the gift of 24/7 on-water towing from TowBoatUS.

Like an auto club for recreational boat owners, a BoatUS Unlimited Towing Membership provides professional on-water towing service by the nationwide TowBoatUS fleet. For saltwater boaters, an annual membership is just $159 per year while freshwater boaters pay just $85. With the average out-of-pocket cost of a tow home more than $750, that could buy a lot of socks.

BoatUS is also the only national towing service offering the BoatUS App featuring TowBoatUSCONNECT which connects boaters to the closest local towing captain at the tap of a button, speeding response times.

Included with all towing membership plans are more than 25 benefits and discounts from Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), a subscription to BoatUS Magazine, free DSC-VHF radio registration, and more. Your boater can also take advantage of BoatUS’s national boating advocacy efforts and safe-boating programs including free boating safety courses from the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation.

For boaters who frequently trailer their boats, consider gifting a BoatUS Membership with Unlimited Trailer Assist for $38 that takes care of roadside breakdowns 24/7. In addition to 100 miles of free on-road towing for both a disabled trailer and its tow vehicle to a safe location, lockout, flat tire, battery jump and fuel drop-off services are also included.
