2019 Flooding Aftermath Affecting Barge Traffic........

Crews are currently working to repair damage to the Missouri River's navigation channel.  According to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District Commander, Colonel Bill Hannan, three years of flooding and high water has damaged the navigation channel, threatening barge shipping.

Hannan says that in addition to levee damage, the Flood of 2019 caused approximately $200 million in damages to navigation structures, and now that river levels are returning to normal, there are shallow spots in the navigation channel.

The Corps estimates that the high river flows combined with last year's flooding damages between half and three quarters of the 7,000 river training structures along the lower Missouri River.........

Memphis' Riverfront Park Renovations Finalized........

On Thursday afternoon, the final schematic designs for Tom Lee Park, which were drawn up by architecture group Studio Gang and landscape architecture group SCAPE, were revealed to the public during a virtual public meeting.

George Abbott, spokesperson for the Memphis River Parks Partnership, says that these improvements will give the Mississippi the riverfront it deserves.  He adds that they are luck in Memphis, as they are located on the widest and wildest pert of the Mississippi River.

The Tom Lee Park renovations are estimated to cost upwards of $45 million, $30 million of which will come from city, county and state sources.  Maintenance for the park is expected to run $250,000 annually........

Runoff Into The Upper Missouri River Basin Below Average During September........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reported that the precipitation levels during September were well below normal within the Missouri River Basin, resulting in only 69 percent of average runoff into the Basin above Sioux City, Iowa.

Since the beginning of the year, precipitation in the Upper Basin has been well below normal, and the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center forecasts that the below normal precipitation will continue through October.

The runoff forecast for the 2020 calendar year, which was updated on October 1, is 30.2 million acre-feet, which is 117 percent of the average.  The average annual runoff for the Upper Basin is 25.8 million acre-feet........

Corps Dewaters St. Anthony Falls Locks........

Back in 2015, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District decided to permanently closed the upper and lower locks at St. Anthony Falls along the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis, effectively ending commercial navigation beyond that point.

The lower lock was completed in 1956, and the upper lock was finished in 1963.  The dam itself remains in place and operational, providing drinking water to the city as well as hydropower.

The St. Paul Engineer District is looking to divest itself of the property, and two of the potential buyers of the property are the city of Minneapolis/St. Paul and the operator of the hydro power plant, Xcel Energy........

U.S. DOT Awards KC Port Authority Grant........

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded the Port Authority of Kansas City a grant of nearly $10 million for a sizable project that would transform a former dump site into an inland port.

The $9.88 million will be used to help finance the redevelopment of a 415 acre site along the Missouri River that was used by the AK Steel Corporation as a landfill.

The Port Authority, or Port KC, purchased the site along the river back in 2018 with the goal of developing the land into what they are calling the Missouri River Terminal..........

Annual Bridge Building Competition Moves Online This Year........

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that this year, they will be hosting the 17th annual Bridge Building Competition on the internet.  The contest pits high school juniors and seniors in MoDOT's Southeast District against one another to design and build the most efficient bridge using limited materials.

MoDOT Senior Highway Designer Anita Clark says that while this year's competition will appear different than past competitions, the goal remains the same, in that students will gain an appreciation of STEM careers, especially engineering.

Bridge kits containing balsa wood, string and glue were delivered to high schools in late September.  Currently, students are hard at work designing and building their bridges, which will be put to the test during a virtual ceremony slated for Thursday, December 10th........

What an awesome month to be a River Rat on the Mississippi! Thursday all morning and afternoon Pool 26 was literally like "pool" with the water at a complete stand still and smooth as glass ALL day!. A rare occurrence I think. Reflections everywhere! Many boats were enjoying just sitting still in the water. Of course. Complete with a pink sunset. An awesome weekend awaits..

Owners Survey The Fire's Aftermath At Woodland Marina........

Thursday afternoon, the wreckage that was the dry storage building at Woodland Marina was still smoldering a day after it and the more than 100 boats stored inside were consumed by a massive fire.

Carl Bumba, the manager of the marina that has been in his family since 1959 says that they have weathered floods and small fires in the past, but this fire was the doomsday scenario for them.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however, Bumba says that a mechanic working on one of the boats in storage when he heard a loud pop and saw sparks.  The mechanic suffered second degree burns attempting to douse the flames.

This fire is the latest in a string of bad luck for the marina. During last year's historic flooding along the Mississippi River, the same building was destroyed.  The repair work from the flooding was completed just before the fire occurred........

Below Average Runoff Continues Along Upper Missouri River........

Precipitation was well below normal in the Missouri River Basin during the month of September, and as a result, the runoff into the Upper Missouri River Basin was only 69 percent of normal.

Since the beginning of the year, precipitation in the Upper Basin is well below normal, and the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center is forecasting that the below normal precipitation will continue through October.

American Queen Steamboat Company Cancels Cruises For The Rest Of The Year........

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the travel and hospitality industries quite hard, and no segment has been hit harder than passenger cruising.  The American Queen Steamboat Company is the latest passenger cruise line to officially announce they have cancelled cruises throughout the rest of the year.

John Waggoner, founder and CEO of the American Queen Steamboat Company says that they came to the decision to cancel cruises for the remainder of the year due to an abundance of caution.

Waggoner adds that their top priority is the well-being of their passengers, the ship's crew and partners.  He notes that when the American Steamboat Co. resumes operations, the enhanced safety and health procedures put into place will allow guests to cruise in confidence........

Marine Legislation

Bipartisan Bill To Clean Up Marine Debris Passed House........

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed bipartisan legislation which would strengthen the federal response to marine debris.  Save Our Seas 2.0 builds upon the original Save Our Seas Act to improve the domestic response to marine debris.

According to Congressman Don Young (R-AK), Save Our Seas 2.0 builds upon the successes in fighting marine debris via bolstering plastics research and funding the needed infrastructure improvements.

The United Nations reports that each year, some eight million metric tons of plastic bottles, straws, bags, fishing gear and abandoned vessels are dumped into the seas, potentially damaging coastal economies, endangering marine wildlife and creating hazardous conditions for boaters........

Bear Trap Dam

River History....

October 8, 2007 in River History

A bear trap failed on Ohio River Lock and Dam No.52 near Brookport, Illinois, and the resulting leak could have drained the pool, effectively shutting down navigation along the Ohio River.

A bear trap is basically a wall that keeps water on one side of the dam. One of the three bear traps at Lock and Dam No.52 was literally stuck down, allowing water to rush over it at 15 miles per hour.

Crews with the Choctaw Transportation Company dumped thousands of tons of boulders onto the failed bear trap to halt the flowing water........

News Release From BoatUS

Buyers of new EZ Loader boat trailers will also get BoatUS Trailer Assist roadside help available 24/7.
SPRINGFIELD, Va., Oct. 7, 2020 – No matter if you are towing your boat across town or across state lines, roadside breakdowns happen. BoatUS reports that flat tires are the number one reason recreational boaters call for roadside assistance. Under a new partnership with BoatUS, buyers of new 2021 EZ Loader Boat Trailers now receive access to 24/7 roadside assistance for both a disabled boat trailer and its tow vehicle. The BoatUS Trailer Assist program includes 100 miles of towing, tire change service, battery jumps, refueling, lock-out and boat ramp winching service, and more.

“It’s the right kind of assistance our EZ Loader boat trailer owners need for the unexpected,” said EZ Loader Senior Vice President Bill Lane. “BoatUS Trailer Assist has all of the specialized towing equipment for handling both a disabled tow vehicle and boat trailer. It’s the real deal, and our EZ Loader customers will never have to leave their boat trailers unattended on the side of the road to look for a new tire.”

“The partnership shows EZ Loader really takes care of its customers,” said BoatUS Director of Partnerships Elio Betty. “Our members tell us this service has saved fishing trips and vacations. Many times they are far from home, on a weekend or late at night, and simply don’t know where to get a flat tire quickly replaced, a battery jump at a far-flung launch ramp, or some fuel to get to the next exit. They really appreciate the help.”

Under the partnership, new 2021 EZ Loader Boat Trailer customers also receive a one-year BoatUS membership which offers more than 25 benefits and discounts, a subscription to BoatUS Magazine, free DSC-VHF radio registration, and much more.

For more information go to ezloader.com.

Metro East Levees

Humane Society Displeased With Working Cat Debate.........

A program that released feral cats to stalk rodents in farmer's barns and the local levees has earned criticism from Bob Daiber, candidate for the Madison County Board Chair, following allegations of mistreatment and death of the animals.

Madison County Chairman Kurt Prenzler had defended the program, noting that the issues at the Metro East Sanitary District only arose following a politically-motivated change in leadership that abandoned the program and the animals.

At issue is a "working cat" program, originally developed by the Metro East Humane Society for farmers, where feral cats are spayed or neutered and adopted with the expectation that they would hunt rodents.  in 2019, the "barn cat" program was expanded to the sanitary district for rodent control along the levees........

Mississippi River Near Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Crews Working To Remove A Sunken Barge From The River........

A salvage operation is currently underway along the Mississippi River to remove a barge that sank near the Cape Girardeau riverfront.  According to Lance Engle, a dredging project manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the barge, loaded with cement mix, sank in January 2020.

The barge company is required to remove the barge, however, recovery efforts could not begin until the river levels were low enough. Engle says that the barge recovery could take several months, as they believe that the cement mix had hardened.

Timothy Veach, a chief waterways manager with the U.S. Coast Guard says it is imperative to remove the sunken barge to keep the channel clear for other vessels along the river........

Ohio River At Cairo, Illinois

Additional Input Sought On New Ohio River "Cairo" Bridge Project........

The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced that they are seeking another round of public input on a proposed replacement of the U.S. 51/U.S. 60/U.S. 62 Ohio River "Cairo" bridge linking Cairo, Illinois and Wickliffe, Kentucky.

Construction on a new bridge is expected to begin within five to ten years.  The preliminary engineering, planning and environmental analysis for the new bridge is continuing.

Even though the current Ohio River "Cairo" Bridge is in fair condition, the project to replace the span would be to improve the cross-river mobility by addressing the functional limitations of the current span and approach spans......

News Release From BoatUS

SPRINGFIELD, Va., Oct. 6, 2020 – Other than the colors of trees and cooler temperatures, what’s different about boating in the fall? A lot, according to the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, especially when it comes your safety aboard. One big issue is there are fewer boats – often the quickest pathway to a rescue – on the water, so flagging down a good Samaritan just got harder. So what’s your plan to stay safe? Here are five fall boating safety tips.

1. Always leave a float plan. It could be as simple as advising a family member or friend where you’re going, what time you expect to return, and picking a time for them to act if you fail to call or text them to advise of your safe return.
2. Be certain your VHF is working, and if the antenna is on a folding mount, ensure it is in the upright position before you leave the dock.
3. While using a cellphone aboard your boat to summon emergency help has become common, it requires boaters to remember to ensure their phone is fully charged and remains dry. For nonemergency on-water towing and assistance, download the free BoatUS App, which connects you to the closest local TowBoatUS towing captain.
4. Ensure you know where your signaling equipment is located such as handheld flares or aerial signals. They should be in good condition and not expired. Boaters often forget to ensure their boat has the required sound-producing device.
5. If you’re solo boating in an area with questionable cellphone coverage, consider purchasing or renting Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) or Emergency Position Indicating Rescue Beacon.

Mississippi River At Minneapolis, Minnesota

Corps Lower Water Levels For Lock And Dam Inspections.........

On Monday, the level of the Mississippi River below Minneapolis' Stone Arch Bridge was low enough to allow passers-by to wander around along the river's bottom.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have been slowly lowering the level of the Mississippi River by some 12 feet so crews can inspect the upper and lower locks and dams at St. Anthony Falls.  The draw down began on Saturday.

The Mississippi River will arrive at the target water level on Tuesday.  The water levels will remain low for two days while engineers inspect the locks for the first time since 2015........

Fall Colors

The 2020 Fall Foliage Map Predicts When THe Colors Will Turn........

Now that fall has officially arrived, the waiting game is on for when the green landscape will begin it's turn into fiery reds, oranges, yellows and golds, and when the best time to view these brilliant colors will be before the leaves fall to the ground.

Each autumn, the Smoky Mountains website releases their annual Fall Foliage Predication Map for the United States.  The map allows users to see when the leaves are expected to begin changing and when they will arrive at their peak.

By the week of October 5th, the colors were expected to flourish in Northern Missouri, while just starting to appear in Southern Missouri.  In Northern Missouri, the peak fall colors should appear between the week of October 19th and the 26th.  Southern Missouri's peak should be a week behind........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Anglers Reeled In $100,000 Fish During Big Bass Bash........

Last weekend, avid angler Cole Anderson reeled in a whopper of a bass worth $100,000 during the annual AFTCO Big Bass Bash, which is held in April and October.  This year's spring Bash had been cancelled.

Cole and his fishing partner, Brennan Banks had agreed to split their winnings 50/50, so, when Cole reeled in a 6.67 pound bass on Saturday, they were elated that it won first place in the 7-9 am time slot.  The $1,500 paid their entry fee, travel expenses and lodging.

On Sunday, Banks reeled in a 5.92 pound bass, winning another $1,500 in the 9-11 am weigh in slot.  Throughout the rest of the tournament, Anderson's 6.67 pound bass proved to be enough to win the event's grand prize........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Two Charged With Illegal Hand Fishing At The Lake........

Two Missouri men have been charged with illegal hand fishing, or noodling catfish on the Lake of the Ozarks back in July.  The Missouri Department of Conservation defines hand fishing as an illegal technique where poachers reach their hands or hooks into catfish nests and drag the fish out.

By dragging the catfish out from their nests, they are removing a parent fish from the nest, which in turn kills the hundreds of eggs that would otherwise become more catfish to catch.

The suspects have been identified as Russell Wallis of Camdenton, Missouri and Samuel Phillips from Edwards, Missouri.  An investigation into "noodling" reports led to one suspect who confessed to the illegal hand fishing, and revealed the second suspect involved.......

Historic Apple Shed Gets New Lease On Life........

Thanks to the historic flooding of 2019, the Apple Shed in Clarksville, Missouri is undergoing an extensive renovation that will preserve it's rich history for generations to come.

The Apple Shed was a busy apple packing and processing facility for years, shutting down in 1978.  It was donated to the Raintree Arts Council and used as a popular setting for weddings, receptions and festivals.

During renovations being made following the 2019 floods, seriously deteriorated floor joists were discovered.  The $135,000 project is about 90 percent completed, with crews replacing flooring, sub-flooring, floor joists and other sections of lumber.  Flood insurance is covering around $92,000 of the project.........

A Look At Kayaking Opportunities In Central Missouri.........

The Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging Missourians to check out ways to connect with nature this fall, and the use of conservation areas and canoeing or kayaking on public waters in Missouri is a great way to do so.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak caused lockdowns and social distancing requirements this spring, consumers have hit the water.  Market research from The NPD Group revealed that during 2020, there was a spike in the sales of kayaks, paddleboards, rafts and canoes following declines prior to the pandemic.

MDC Recreational Use Specialist A.J. Campbell says that kayaking is an excellent way to get some exercise and enjoy nature.  He adds that here are hundreds of boat accesses along the rivers and lakes in Missouri........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer

Mercury Marine's Bravo 4 S Forward Facing Drive Enters Wake Boat Market.........

Back in mid-August, Mercury Marine introduced their Bravo 4 S forward facing drive, and according to Dan Ryks, category manager for sterndrive and inboard propulsion for Mercury Marine, it is intended for the popular wakesurf category.

The Bravo 4 S is a sterndrive that features forward facing props, which places them beneath the boat.  The drive is coupled to enhanced Smart Two digital controls that integrate the drive with the vessel's wake and ballast systems.

Mercury Marine utilized computer-aided design for concept refinement and robots to laser cut the components.  The company also used the knowledge gained from their decades of experience with the Bravo Three twin prop sterndrive........

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your great website. We use it almost daily for river levels, and importantly this week, for water temperature.

The Mississippi River Water Trail Association in partnership with a lot of organizations including National Park Service, the Audubon Center at Riverlands, Army Corps, Missouri State Parks, the YMCA, and St. Louis Canoe and Kayak Club completed 6 days of kayaking safety instruction with American Canoe Association Instructor Trainer Tom Burroughs of Clearcreek Paddlesports. The simulated rescue was near Portage Island on Oct 2. The group photo was in Riverlands on September 30.

More "Working Cat" Levee Program News........

More controversy has arisen over the "Working Cat" Program in Madison County, Illinois, as Bob Daiber, challenger for the position of Madison County Board Chairman, is claiming that the cats are not being properly cared for.

The current Madison County Board Chairman, Kurt Prenzler, says that this is not the case.  He states that food and water are provided for the working cats each day, whether they eat it or not.

Feral cats are often utilized to help control rodent populations in settings such as barns, mills, warehouses and along levees.  The resurrection of the Madison County program has been discussed over the past several months........

Congress Members Raise Concerns Over Lower Missouri River Navigation........

Harvest season has arrived, and members of Congress representing the districts along the Missouri River are calling attention to the critical navigation situation caused by a maintenance backlog along the lower reaches of the Missouri River.

During 2019, the entire length of the Missouri River suffered unprecedented flooding, however, a letter penned by the representatives claims that the current challenges and conditions along the navigation channel are caused by previously constructed shallow water habitat chute projects and dike notches.

THe letter was addressed to Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, Chief of Engineers, with copies going to R.D. James, Assistant Secretary of the Army - Civil Works, as well as the commanders of the Kansas City and Omaha Corps of Engineers Districts........

Madison County Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler Backs Feline Pest Control For Levees........

Madison County Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler is throwing his support behind a humane society approved program that gives feral cats a new lease on life by adopting them to help control the infestation of moles, voles and other burrowing animals along the Wood River Levee system.

Back on September 18th, the Wood River Drainage and Levee District approved a resolution that allows the district to enter into an agreement with the Metro East Humane Society's Working Cat Program.  This program began more than a year ago to reduce the number of feral cats euthanized in Madison County.

Prenzler says that the claims that the semi-feral cats at MESD are not being cared for is not true.  He says that the cats had been labeled feral by the humane society, and they were provided food and water on a daily basis by a caretaker.........

Click here to read this news article from advantagenews.com.

A feral cat is an un-owned domestic cat that lives outdoors and avoids human contact: it does not allow itself to be handled or touched, and usually remains hidden from humans. Feral cats may breed over dozens of generations and become an aggressive apex predator in urban, savannah and bushland environments.

Fall Is The Perfect Time To Paddle Missouri, Illinois Rivers.........

When someone mentions float trips, one would typically think of hot summer days, lazing in an inner tube while meandering down a small river with a cooler of your favorite beverages in tow.  Or perhaps paddling a canoe with a buddy, or even paddling solo in a kayak.

Float trips during the fall, however, have some advantages, such as cooler temperatures, fewer insects, the fall colors are turning and maybe best of all, the crowds are gone.

Stltoday.com has put together a short list of float trips offered that are fairly close to the St. Louis region, including along the Cache River in Southern Illinois, the Huzzah River near Leasburg, Missouri, the Mississippi River near St. Louis and at Lakeside 370 Park in  St. Peters, Missouri........

Port Authority Proceeding With Port Plans........

Jefferson County is located along the Mississippi River just south of St. Louis and is an important and developing part of the St. Louis region's Ag Coast port ecosystem, and it includes the river ports of Herculaneum, Crystal City and Kimmswick.

The Jefferson County Port Authority has been in existence since 1976, developed by a visionary group of businesspeople.  Neal Breitweiser, executive director of the Jefferson County Port Authority says that he sees a big future for the county's ports.

Breitweiser says that he has read reports stating that demand for agricultural products could grow by 20 times over the next several decades.  He adds that the infrastructure is not in place to handle the demand........

Sea Doo Pushes Innovations To The Limit........

In spite of a short production slow down due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Sea Doo has not slowed down when it comes to pushing innovations to the limit.  Following the successful launch of redesigned models last year, Sea Doo has continued development work for the 2021 lineup.

For the 2021 model year, Sea Doo is releasing a completely redesigned platform in their performance segment, featuring several new innovations and features to enhance the on-water experience.

Heading up Sea Doo's 2021 model lineup is the redesigned RXP-X 300, which according to BRP Marine director of global product management, James Heintz is set to redefine the world of performance personal watercraft........

Mississippi River History

Research Reveals Mississippi River Is Older Than Previously Thought........

A team of researchers with the Southern Illinois University, led by Sally Potter-McIntyre, have discovered evidence that the Mississippi River began flowing some 70 million years ago, about three times longer that previously believed..

The SIU researchers made their discovery by looking at the age of zircon fragments from sandstone found in southern Illinois.  The zircons are very hard, so they don't weather away and contain uranium, which functions as a kind of geological clock.

Potter-McIntyre says that the uranium decays to lead at a steady rate that is not affected by outside factors, so by measuring the amount of uranium, and it's daughter product, lead, they can determine when that grain was formed........

Boat Retailer

MarineMax Has Acquired SkipperBud's........

MarineMax recently announced that they have acquired SkipperBud's and it's affiliate, Silver Seas, increasing the North-South-West connection for both companies and their customers.

The acquisition has added 20 MarineMax locations to Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, California, Washington and Florida.  The acquisition also bolsters MarineMax's premium real estate holdings with the addition of 11 marina and storage facilities, almost doubling the company's marina portfolio.

Brett McGill, Chief Executive Officer and President of MarineMax says that they are excited to expand with SkipperBud's who they have known for many years and who shares MarineMax's values and culture........

Fall Color Outlook

The Fall Colors May Change Early This Year.........

According to a prediction made by a local weather expert, the warm and wet weather conditions earlier in the year may result in the earlier arrival of the fall color change.

John Nell, the Weatherspotter Training Facilitator says that over the past several years, the color change has been trending later, but this year could be a return to normal.  Nell says that he is already seeing the color change in some parts of the Riverbend.

You can keep tabs on the fall color "hot spots" on the local tourism bureau's website.  The Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau will be offering daily updates on where the best fall colors can bee seen........

In the early morning a tow slammed into Ludlow Bromley Yacht Club located along the Ohio River at Ludlow, Kentucky hitting several boats and severely damaging the marina's restaurant.

Part of the Yacht Club was shoved down river and onto the riverbanks.

The Coast Guard said the reason for the crash was that "Mate on watch" on tow fell asleep at the controls.

Crews Working To Remove Sunken Concrete Barge........

Just east of the center of the Mississippi River channel near Cape Girardeau, Missouri, crews are working on a crane barge with a unique fountain spewing water dozens of feet in the air.

It turns out that the crew is working to recover a sunken concrete barge, which was laden with around 1,400 tons of cement mix, when a collision ripped it open, causing it to sink.  The cement mixed with the water and turned into concrete.

Raising the barge with it's cargo is not a possibility, so, the crew has to break up the concrete before raising the barge.  This is accomplished by using what appears to be a type of pile driver on the end of the crane........

Low Water Reveals Old Shipwreck Remains........

Thanks to the low water levels along the Mississippi River near Grand Tower, Illinois, the remains of an old shipwreck have come were discovered by local angler Shorty Masters.

Some speculate that the vessel's remains are that of the historic steamboat known as the  Golden Eagle.  Another local resident and historian, Carl Wilson says that the remains are not the Golden Eagle.

Wilson says that the Golden Eagle sank around five miles further downstream from where the keel boat's remains were discovered.  Wilson adds that several weeks after the Golden Eagle sank, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dismantled the vessel........
