Navigational buoys may have been dragged off station,so remain alert while transiting. Recreational traffic is discouraged

Mississippi River Near Grafton, Illinois

Despite Flooding And A Pandemic, Grafton Looking To Bounce Back........

The past few years have not been kind to Grafton, Illinois, as 2019 brought flooding and 2020 brought the COVID-19 outbreak.  Grafton relies heavily on tourism dollars, and the newly elected Mayor is hoping the town can rebound.

Mayor Mike Morrow says that he is ready to take the town in a new direction, with the intention of building upon the success that they have seen from tourism.

One sign that things are recovering in Grafton is the return of the Grafton Ferry, which has returned with an expanded schedule in an effort to help drive tourism........

Mississippi River Near Great Tower, Illinois

A Look Back At The Sinking Of The Golden Eagle........

In the wee hours of May 19, 1947, the Golden Eagle, an antique steamboat boasting twin smokestacks, gingerbread woodwork and a giant sternwheel, was making it's way from St. Louis to Nashville, Tennessee.

Approximately 80 miles downstream from St. Louis, the Golden Eagle's steering froze up.  The vessel ended up drifting into submerged rocks, gashing open the hull on the port side.

After regaining control, Captain Nathan Smith aimed the listing Golden Eagle towards Grand Tower Island.  He was able to shove the vessel's bow against the bank.  Crew members woke up the passengers, swung a gangplank to the shore.  All aboard were able to escape to safety........

MSHP Looking For Hit And Run Boater........

The Missouri State Highway Patrol say that they do not know the identity of the captain that crashed into two other docked vessels prior to leaving the scene.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the person was aboard a 30 foot Rinker in the Southwood Shores Condominiums cove when it collided with a 27 foot Lowe Pontoon and a Bayliner Rendezvous.  The unknown boater then fled the scene.

Reportedly, a similar incident occurred in April, with a vessel leaving the scene of a crash at the 1.8 Nile Marker of the Glaize Arm, injuring a passenger in the boat........

The NWS reports that as of Monday morning, the Mississippi River at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam was at 10.65 feet.  By Thursday, the river is forecasted to rise to 14.1 feet.

Starting on Saturday, the level of the Mississippi River is expected to fall, and within a week's time, ending up around six feet on May 30th.  Low river levels can cause issues for river traffic, resulting in restrictions being put into place........

Old Town Cape Seeking New Floodwall Mural........

During Monday night's meeting of the Cape Girardeau City Council, Old Town Cape asked for assistance in paying for an $80,000 mural project along the city's floodwall.

Old Town Cape says that it will cost approximately $15,000 to remove the old mural facing the Mississippi River and around $60,000 to paint the new mural using materials more resistant to fading.  The group has about $13,000 for the project.

The Cape Girardeau City Council discussed providing around $50,000 with funds from the Casino account.  They have assigned staff to draw up proposals that can be discussed at the next City Council meeting........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release

Make Safety A Top Priority For Memorial Day Weekend!

Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recognizes Memorial Day weekend is highly anticipated and reminds motorists the Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort) during the long holiday weekend. This means every available trooper will be on the road enforcing traffic laws and assisting motorists.
Over the 2020 Memorial Day holiday weekend, 10 people died and 444 were injured in 1,081 traffic crashes. Last year, troopers made 118 DWI arrests.
The Memorial Day weekend is also an unofficial start to the boating season. During the 2020 Memorial Day weekend, there were 11 boating crashes which included one fatality and seven injuries. One person drowned over last year’s holiday weekend. Troopers arrested 11 people for boating while intoxicated over the 2020 Memorial Day weekend.
This year's counting period for the holiday weekend begins at 6 p.m., Friday, May 28, and ends at 11:59 p.m., Monday, May 31, 2021. Troopers will focus their attention on seat belt use, use of child safety seats, impaired drivers, hazardous moving violations, and speed violations.
If your plans include driving or boating, choose to be courteous and obey all Missouri laws. Use a seat belt when you drive and wear a life jacket when you're on or near the water. Always pay attention, whether you're operating a vehicle or a vessel, and choose to be a sober driver on land and on the water. A safe, fun weekend starts with planning and good decisions.
Motorists or boaters in need of assistance or who want to report a crime should use the Highway Patrol's Emergency Assistance number 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone. For road condition reports, travelers can visit the Patrol's website at www.mshp.dps.mo.gov. Click on the Road Condition icon to view road construction areas as well as road conditions throughout the state or call 1-888-275-6636.
Motorists are encouraged to do their part to make Missouri’s roadways safer. Speed, inattention, and impaired driving are leading causes of traffic crashes. Please do your part. Obey all traffic laws and make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
Missouri provides a variety of opportunities for boating. Please be courteous to others on the water, wear a life jacket, and obey the law regarding safe operation of a vessel and no wake zones. Causing harm to another person or their property with an excessive boat wake may subject you to enforcement action or civil liability. Always treat other boaters and property owners as you want to be treated. Never operate a boat while you are impaired; never ride with an impaired operator. Remember: Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

Lower Mississippi River

Rising River Levels Prompt Restrictions........

As of May 13th, the Mississippi River level was around 11.5 feet on the Carrollton Gauge and forecasted to keep rising for approximately a week.  Once the river rises beyond 11 feet on the Carrollton Gauge, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District initiates the Phase I flood fight.

The Phase I flood fight involves weekly inspections of the district's levees and the implementation of construction restrictions within 1,500 feet.  The Mississippi River at New Orleans is not forecasted to rise to 15 feet, which would trigger Phase 2 flood fight.

Upstream at Baton Rouge, the river gauge measured 32 feet and rising as of May 12th.  The Mississippi River is forecasted to rise above 33 feet, prompting the Coast Guard Sector New Orleans to implement navigation restrictions........

Hi Bill!

It was just another beautiful day on the river! Here’s the view from my boat where you can see the new Fire and Rescue dock in Kimmswick. This facility will improve Rock Community Fire District’s ability to effect water rescues and to fight both water- and land-based fires. This project was made possible by the cooperative effort between Rock Fire District, the Anheuser Estate and the City of Kimmswick, according to Kimmswick Mayor Phil Stang.

See you on the river!

River History....

May 17, 1849 in River History

A devastating fire destroyed a significant part of St. Louis and many of the steamboats on the St. Louis riverfront. This was the first fire in United States history in which it is known that a firefighter was killed in the line of duty.

The St. Louis Great Fire of 1849 was started on the evening of May 17, 1849 by a smoldering mattress aboard the steamboat White Cloud.  The fire quickly spread to an adjoining steamboat, the Edward Bates, which burnt free of her moorings located on what is now Laclede's Landing.  She drifted downriver, spreading fire as she went.  In a half an hours time, 23 steamboats were on fire.  The Great Fire would claim 418 buildings along 15 blocks...

Fire captain Thomas Targee sent orders for soldiers to use kegs of gunpowder to blow up buildings in order to create a fire-stop. His idea worked to an extent, but he was killed in one of the explosions

Mississippi River History

The Day A Hammer Ended The Admiral's Cruising Career........

May 16, 1979 was a fateful day for Mississippi River cruising in the St. Louis region, as the owners of the S.S. Admiral announced that cruises were cancelled for the year. A hammer wielded by a Coast Guard inspector had gone right through the Admiral's thin, corroded hull.

The owners of the Admiral vowed that she would be river-worthy once again.  Tom Dunn, with Streckfus Steamers, Inc. reported that they would have to send the Admiral to New Orleans for repairs, as that was the nearest shipyard with a drydock large enough to handle the Admiral.

Dunn said that they would definitely be able to get the Admiral repaired, as they would have all winter to do so.  As fate would reveal, the Admiral would never cruise the Mississippi RIver again, and she would serve several purposes before being dismantled and scrapped in 2011........

Hi Bill,

Glenn and I learned early on Friday that the paddlers trying to break the Mississippi speed record we’re going to shoot the rapids at the low water dam instead of going through the chain of rocks canal and locks. We drove to Chouteau Island and parked next to the old chain of rocks bridge. Jeff and Sherri Easley and their river dogs met us there. Here’s a group shot of the people on the bridge and some more pictures. Then we rode our bikes to see them at the St. Louis river front and got their picture at the Eads Bridge.

River Traffic Resumes Following Bridge Closure.........

The U.S. Coast Guard has announced that the waterway restriction along the Mississippi River at Memphis has been lifted.  The river reopened to vessel traffic on Friday, several days after being closed die to the discovery of a crack in the Interstate 40 Bridge

As of Friday morning, some 62 tows with a total of 1,058 barges queued along the Mississippi River awaiting their chance to pass under the Interstate 40 Hernando de Soto Bridge.

Civil Engineer Discusses The I-40 Bridge Crack........

According to civil engineer and associate professor of engineering at University of Memphis, Adel Abdelnaby, the crack in the Interstate 40 Hernando de Soto Bridge may have been present for several weeks prior to it's discovery.

Abdelnaby had spent two years studying the Hernando de Soto Bridge, and installed sensors in an effort to detect any abnormalities.  He studies and teaches bridge fatigue, which happens when tiny cracks in the metal form over time.

Abdelnaby says that the bridge's steel is subjected to millions of cycles of stresses since it's opening in 1973.  He says that bridges built during that era were not designed to handle the high volume of traffic crossing the span each day........

Decreased Runoff During April....  Effects on Navigation Expected By Fall....

Extremely dry conditions during April has resulted in considerably less runoff into the Upper Missouri River Basin, which could cause navigation restrictions during the latter part of the year.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that the Missouri River Upper Basin runoff was 44 percent of normal, making this the ninth driest April in 123 years of record keeping.

John Remus, chief of the Corps of Engineers; Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that the extremely dry April combined with current drought conditions and lower than normal snowpack has prompted them to reduce their 2021 runoff forecast........

Ohio River Near Wellsburg, W. Virginia

New Construction Method Sees Bridge Span Floated On Barges........

A new construction technique has crews building the main span of a new bridge on shore, then floated on barges to the construction site and then hoisted into place.

Excell Marine, working with Dutch subcontractor Mammoet, recently moved the 830 foot, 4,100 ton span with two tandem barges and towboats at either end.

Broomfield, Colorado based contractor Flatiron Construction came up with the idea to build the span on the riverbank and move it to the work site later.  Thos method allowed crews to work on the tied-arch design before the piers were completed........

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee

The Broken Bridge Beam May Disrupt The U.S. Economy........

While the routine inspection of the Hernando de Soto Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee may have prevented a potential disaster, the damaged span may still wreak havoc on an economic level.

On Tuesday, a crew performing a routine inspection of the bridge found that one of it's beams had fractured.  Officials state that the beam is structurally significant.  Officials with the Arkansas and Tennessee transportation departments and the U.S. Coast Guard immediately closed the bridge to traffic, and barred river traffic from passing under the bridge.

Officials state that the bridge and river will remain closed at least until a thorough inspection has been carried out, and that may take several days to complete.  Repairs could take several weeks of even months to repair........

News Release From BoatUS

SPRINGFIELD, Va., May 13, 2021 – Equipping a marine VHF radio aboard your boat can greatly enhance safety and communication, and a new partnership aims to offer additional benefits that can further improve your boating experience. For a limited time, purchasers of Cobra Electronics’ fixed-mount and handheld marine radio products will receive a complimentary one-year Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) basic membership, giving purchasers access to a range of more than 25 additional BoatUS benefits.

The offer includes a free Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number for your Digital Selective Calling (DSC) Cobra marine radio; access to 24/7 dispatch to the largest on-water towing assistance fleet in the nation, TowBoatUS, with up to $50 of on-water and roadside assistance towing coverage included; a subscription to the nation’s No. 1 boating publication, BoatUS Magazine; and more. Purchasers may also easily upgrade to a Freshwater or Saltwater Unlimited Towing Plan for an additional fee.

“Cobra’s marine products focus on enhancing the boating experience for the user, with GPS-enabled VHF radios eliminating the hassle of having to connect to your boat’s GPS,” said BoatUS Director of Partnerships Elio Betty. “Equipped with Bluetooth operation, one button DSC distress calling, and helpful features such as Rewind-Say-Again, Cobra makes on-water communications affordable and essential to your safety on the water.”

A leader in award-winning mobile and consumer electronics, Cobra ensures its radios are engineered to operate in all weather conditions and are equipped with best-in-class technology that prepare for all possible scenarios on the water. As part of the offer, boat owners looking to purchase a fixed-mount or handheld VHF radio this spring have an additional incentive with mail-in rebates from participating retailers and on Cobra.com.

“Establishing Cobra as the official radio partner of BoatUS means our customers will have access to the nation’s largest recreational boating advocacy, services and safety group,” said Gail Babitt, CEO of Cobra Electronics. “It gives boat owners critical communications abilities on the water and adds value to boat ownership.”

Participating retailers include Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s or shopping online at Cobra.com. For additional information on the offer, rebate, and partnership details, visit Cobra.com/marinepromo.

On Wednesday, more than 400 barges were delayed along the Lower Mississippi River after a bridge crack prompted the U.S> Coast Guard to close a portion of the Lower Mississippi River to vessel traffic.

The Coast Guard stopped all river traffic along the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee between Mile Markers 736 and 737 after a crack was discovered in the Hernando de Soto Bridge spanning the river.

The span carries Interstate 40 over the Mississippi River between Memphis, Tennessee and West Memphis, Arkansas.  It is not known when the river will reopen........

5 Spring Claims to Avoid

Our GEICO | BoatUS Marine Insurance claim files highlight the most common springtime problems. Here's how to avoid being one of our statistics.

Last spring, a GEICO | BoatUS insured was readying his 27-foot cruiser for launch. He checked the bilge pump, fuel lines, and stuffing box and did his usual thorough inspection from bow to stern. He thought about replacing the engine's raw water impeller but figured he could get one more year out of it. Big mistake. On his first trip out, after he got onto plane, the engine overheated and shut down suddenly. After he was towed back to his marina, his mechanic said that the overheat had destroyed his engine. The cost to repair? Nearly $14,000. Unfortunately, damage caused by a worn-out impeller is considered maintenance and usually not covered by a boat's insurance policy.

Don't let something like this ruin your season (and wallet). BoatU.S has been insuring boats for decades, and our detailed claims analyses let us spotlight where things go wrong. What follows are the most common claims we see every spring, some from winterizing mistakes and some from a neglected spring commissioning routine.

Fishing for Freedom

Quincy, IL

10th Annual Fishing For Freedom -

Quincy is a no entry fee bass, catfish, and crappie tournament that pairs our Warriors (active Military and Veterans) with our Boaters (professional anglers, avid tournament fishermen, fishing guides, and local outdoorsmen) for a fun day of fishing on our local fisheries. Fishing For Freedom - Quincy cannot give back all the lost time away from the great outdoors during deployment, but we can give back a weekend. We do that by providing our Warriors with a weekend full of entertainment and enjoyment of the great outdoors with their fellow Veterans and active duty personnel, as well as the general public. This event is designed to provide our Warriors with events that range from a fish fry, trapshooting, archery, live music, a Heroes Banquet, and a day of fun tournament fishing on the Mighty Mississippi River or Mark Twain Lake. We also have private lake(s) where we take our Warriors who cannot easily fish from a boat to ensure their safety and well-being

Sea Tow Released 2021 Boating Trends Survey.........

Thanks to the COVID-19 outbreak, the boating industry saw a record number of new boaters hit the water, as people sought out new ways to recreate outdoors.

Boaters, new and old, adjusted their habits to observe social distancing while making the most out if their time on the water.  A recent survey released by Sea Tow International, the trend is likely to continue.

Boater's behaviors that have been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak include:

○  52% of boaters surveyed anticipate their boating activity to increase this summer compared to last.
○  20% cite the pandemic as the reason for extending their boating season again in 2021.
○  24% plan to vacation on/by boat (versus other forms of travel) because of the pandemic.
○  35% plan to use their boat primarily for cruising near their home.
○  16% upgraded to a larger boat in 2020 or plan to do so in 2021.
○  52% plan to use their boat primarily for fishing (65% in-shore / 30% off-shore / 5% freshwater).
○  30% have found it more difficult to find dockage and/or marina space.

Boat Gas News

Beware When Refueling........

Once again, it is time for boat dealers to remind their customers that gasoline blended with ethanol should be avoided whenever possible.

Corn is the biggest cash crop in the nation, with approximately 40 percent of it headed to the production of ethanol.  The recreational boating industry will likely be affected by an ethanol push by ethanol lobbyists.

River History....

11 May, 1940 in River History

Milles Fountain, "The Meeting of the Waters" is unveiled in Aloe Plaza, across the street from Union Station. The fountain, originally named “The Wedding of the Rivers,” depicts the merger of the Missouri and the Mississippi Rivers, represented by the two central figures. Joining the two main figures and making up the wedding procession are 17 water figures, symbolic of the tributaries that empty into the two major rivers. Initially, an uproar arose over the nudity of the male
figure, representing the Mississippi River and the female figure, the Missouri River, & this brought about the name change.
Reprinted from St. Louis Missouri History, Landmarks & Vintage photos

Louis P. Aloe was the president of A. S. Aloe & Company, which made and sold optical, surgical, and photographic equipment, & was President of the Board of Aldermen from 1916 to 1923. It's believed that his leadership helped pass the 1923 bond issue, which funded many major building projects

Metro East Waterways

Officials Investigating Why A Creek Turned White.........

On Monday, officials were looking into why a stretch of Schoenberger Creek, several miles long, turned white.  The creek runs between Belleville and East St. Louis.

City workers from East St. Louis were investigating the incident at St. Clair Avenue and 79th Street just before 6 PM.  Initial testing revealed that the problem was "nothing major". Responders say that after being on the scene for several hours, the color began to fade.

East St. Louis Fire Chief Jason Blackmon said that the St. Clair County Special Emergency Services responded as well.  The volunteer group assists first responders in situations where potentially hazardous materials may have been released into the environment.......

After 2 Record Years, Great Lakes Water Surge Eases........

A period of mild, dry weather has given the Great Lakes a bit of a break following two years worth of high water that has broken records as well as damaging shoreline roadways and homes.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say that while the Great Lakes are still above normal, their levels have fallen steadily since last fall.  The lake levels are expected to remain below 2020 levels for the majority of this year.

John Allis, chief of Great Lakes hydrology for the Corps' Detroit District says that over the next six months, the worst has past.  He adds that they don't anticipate seeing anywhere near the record highs seen last year........

"The plan is to keep it in the same location, maybe a little closer to the river and up about 7 ft higher. The building will be just a little smaller with a bigger deck."
