Hi Pool 26,
Hello Bill!

All is well where the rivers meet the sounds and seas. A stormy and Challenging winter and spring it has been. Mentally, physically, emotionally, with the pandemic as a cherry on top.
Probably be treasure hunting soon. I look forward to reporting in more again. I hope everyone fare’s well this season.

Mississippi River Near Olive Branch, Illinois

Barges Still In A Field 2 Years After Flood Left Them Behind........

Nearly two years ago, six barges broke free from a tow during a flood along the Mississippi RIver in rural Alexander County, Illinois.  Four of the barges were sucked through the breached Len Small Levee.  Two were floated back out, but the other two remain high and dry in Sherry Pecord's backyard.

This tale actually began back in 2011, when major flooding along the MississippiRiver caused an initial break in the levee.  The government repaired the levee and bought out several homes.  Sherry's husband Sean is a third generation farmer, and declined the buyout.

In late 2015, the river was headed up again, overtopping and breaching the Len Small levee again on New Year's Day 2016.  The government has decided that repairing the levee again would not be cost-effective, and residents remaining do so at their own risk........

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois

Boaters Make Suggestions On Improving Art Keller Marina........

Wednesday evening, a special meeting of the Quincy Park Board was held to gather input from renters at the Art Keller Marina on what improvements could be made to the marina.  A few of the suggestions included Accessibility, maintenance and security.

The Park Board is also preparing to request proposals for privatizing the marina.  A similar request for proposals was issued back in January, however, there were no responses.

Slip rentals at the marina have dwindled over the years, from a robust 192 slipholders in 2011 to only 104 so fan in 2021.  A survey conducted by the Park DIstrict found that most renters were not happy with the day-to-day upkeep at the marina........

August Winery Investor Launching Riverboat Cruises In St. Charles County........

This fall, Hoffmann Family of Cos. headed up by David Hoffmann, intends to offer sightseeing tours and private events aboard the 96 foot yacht, Miss Augusta.

Hoffmann is the investor behind a $100 million plan to turn the Augusta wine country into a national destination.  Since late last year, Hoffmann has been buying up wineries, historic buildings as well as hundreds of acres of vineyards.  Hoffmann's plans include the construction of a five story hotel with a 12 hole golf course and other amenities.

On Monday, the St. Charles County Council approved plans for expanding and building an additional 120 foot section of dock space at Klondike Park, which is 3 miles east of Augusta on Highway 94.  Hoffmann is also looking to add a paddleboat and dock in Washington, Missouri where they would offer transportation to Augusta and tours........

Decided to try to paddle tonight instead, with a full moon. Left at 9:30 pm with a River Angel - Cindy.
The strong wind continued to blow throughout the night paddle
We Pulled off at Trommard boat access.
Marv and I are sleeping here beside the river.
I Will try again in the morning for more miles.

News Release From BoatUS

Boaters: 5 Things You Can Do to Take the Search out of Search and Rescue

Are you making it difficult to be found in an emergency ?

ANNAPOLIS, MD., May 25, 2021 – “Do I know how to be found in an emergency?” That’s a question every boater should ask at the beginning of the boating season. The answer, however, is likely to go far beyond simply having a cellphone aboard. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water offers five tips that can potentially speed a rescuer’s response to a boater in need of emergency help.

1. File a float plan: Telling a responsible family member or friend, leaving a note (on your vehicle’s dashboard) at the launch ramp, or using a smart phone float plan app, are great ways to allow someone else to trigger the alarm if you fail to return by an appointed time.

2. Have a VHF radio aboard — but not just any old VHF radio: All VHF radios are not alike. One of the best ways to speed an on-water rescue is to have a Digital Selective Calling (DSC) VHF radio aboard. A DSC-VHF radio does all of the things a regular VHF does, but it also has a unique press-one-button mayday feature that gives rescuers your vessel’s location — taking the “search” out of search and rescue. The newest waterproof handheld DSC-VHF radios are great for small boats. Before you install your DSC-VHF radio, be sure to get your radio’s Maritime Mobile Service Identity Number (MMSI) that is your vessel’s unique ID. BoatUS members can request one for free.

3.Label your SUP, canoe, or kayak: Adding contact information on the inside of your paddlecraft with a waterproof marker could mean less time U.S. Coast Guard and first responders need to spend chasing down false alarms. This frees up valuable resources when time really counts. And let’s face it, another benefit is that you may get your paddlecraft back after it blows down the lake. It’s also a good idea to let authorities know if your paddlecraft has gone missing.

4. Do not leave shore … without a fully charged phone: Smartphones are part of life ashore and aboard. The reality, however, is that many boaters put all their safety eggs in one basket and rely solely on a cellphone to call for help. Cellphone batteries generally don’t do well after a long day of running apps, listening to music, texting, and taking photos. And for many phones, water is the enemy. Consider keeping your phone a waterproof pouch or case. If you need help for routine, nonemergency assistance, such as a tow home, battery jump, fuel delivery or soft ungrounding, download the BoatUS App that connects boaters to closest local TowBoatUS response vessel.

5. Register your EPIRB or PLB: The U.S. Coast Guard receives hundreds of false alerts each year from these critical safety devices. To free up more time for responding to real emergencies, boaters need to properly register their Emergency Position Indicating Rescue Beacon (EPIRB) or Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). If you need a beacon for only a short period of time, rent one from the affordable BoatUS Foundation EPIRB/PLB rental program

The steamer Golden Eagle was one of the best-known riverboats of all time, and was a favorite of it's host city, St. Louis.  The Golden Eagle even made national news when it sank on May 18, 1947.

The Golden Eagle struck a riprap revetment at the head of Grand Tower Island, 80 miles downstream from St. Louis.  The collision ripped a 6 foot gash in the hull. The accident was attributed to the failure of the steering gear, which caused the rudders to jam.

Captain Nathan Smith and his pilot partner, Captain S. M. Darling were able to get the sinking vessel to shore, and all 91 passengers were able to safely evacuate to the island........

News Release From BoatUS

T

SPRINGFIELD, Va., May 24, 2021 – The traditional kickoff of the summer boating season, Memorial Day weekend, is just days away, and TowBoatUS, the on-water towing service that gets boats home after they break down or run aground, is expecting a very busy 2021 summer boating season ahead with increased boating traffic.

With more than 300 locations across the country and 600 red on-water response vessels, TowBoatUS forecasts the volume of requests from boaters for routine, non-emergency on-water help – a traditional barometer of boating activity – will be up 20% over last year. Boaters will need to prepare for congested waterways, launch ramps and anchorages.

“In 2020, our nationwide TowBoatUS towing fleet saw volume of requests for routine on water assistance up 20% over the prior year, which at the time was the highest single, year-over-year increase in the history of on water towing dispatches,” said Vice President of Towing John Condon. More than 81,000 boaters made requests for on-water assistance with the BoatUS App, by cellphone or VHF radio to TowBoatUS’s 24-hour dispatch centers in Virginia, Florida, and local TowBoatUS companies.

“This season we predict recreational boating activity, as measured through the volume of requests for on-water towing, battery jumps, soft ungrounding services and fuel drop-offs will again be up 20% over last year,” added Condon. “That reflects a phenomenal increase in on-water boating activity in just two years.”

What can boaters do on congested waters? TowBoatUS towing vessel captains say patience, etiquette and safety is key. Slow down a bit and be considerate to fellow boaters. Follow launch ramp protocols and navigation rules, and keep an extra lookout while running. Ensure your boat has all safety gear, including an anchor, in case you break down and need to call for assistance. The free BoatUS App can connect boaters to the closest local towing captain.

Condon also notes the significant number of first-time boat owners. “Welcome them to the fold and show them the ropes with an eye toward operating safely, courteously and having a fun day on the water,” said Condon. “It will make everyone’s day on the water better.”

Mississippi River At Burlington, Iowa

Bag Believed To Contain A Body Recovered From The River........

At around 3:30 pm Sunday afternoon, the Burlington Police and Fire departments were called out to the riverfront for a report of a possible body in the water.  A caller reported that they may have found a body in a heavy duty construction bag floating in the Mississippi River.

Burlington's Battalion Chief Bruce Workman reports that following a thorough investigation, detectives determined that the bag contained only sand, tubes, mud and dirt.  Workman believes that he bag was leftover material from floodwall construction in 2019.........

Starting later this month, people along the rivers in seven states from Missouri to Louisiana could see a low-flying helicopter towing a long cylinder.  The fly-overs will go on into July.

Referred to as a bird, the cylinder contains electromagnetic equipment that the U.S. Geological Survey uses when mapping aquifers, which are underground locations that water can be drawn from .  There is other equipment in the helicopter.

Research geophysicist Burke Minsley says that this year, the helicopter will be covering around 6,500 miles of rivers in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana........

Big River Near Cedar Hill, Missouri

11 Year Old Boy Drowned Sunday Afternoon........

Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak reported that around 3:15 pm Sunday afternoon, an 11 year old boy drowned while swimming in the Big River in Jefferson County, Missouri.

The boy was reportedly wearing a life vest when he entered the Big River and attempted to swim downstream.  He reportedly got caught on a log mid-stream, went under water and did nor resurface.

A Sheriff's Deputy stripped off his uniform and swam out to rescue the boy.  The Deputy performed CPR until an EMS unit arrived.  The boy was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter........

Houseboat Submerged For Years Raised From Under A Dock...........

Earlier this month, a 40 foot sunken boat that had been submerged under a dock at the Lake of the Ozarks 26 Mile Marker for at least a decade was raised and removed.

A crew from Hart Diving and Salvage was hired to raise the sunken vessel.  Divers attached multiple airbags to the vessel, and carefully brought it to the surface, not only because it was fragile, but is was not directly under the dock slip.

Property owner Tom Devlin had no idea that there was a sunken vessel under the dock. He learned about the problem when he called Amren to get a dock license.  Currently, Devlin is in talks with Amren trying to determine who will foot the salvage bill........

Arizona Considers Diverting Mississippi River Water To Ease Their Drought....

The drought in Arizona has state legislators considering ways to mitigate the problem, including diverting water from the Mississippi River near Davenport, Iowa and pumping it across the country.

Representative Tim Dunn says that a pipeline would follow the interstate across the United States, and Mississippi River water would be pumped into the Green River, which would flow into the Colorado River system and ultimately into Lake Mead.  THe water would then be distributed by the 7 basin states.

The cost of the pipeline, or even a feasibility study for the project is not known, however, supporters of the project say that it would be beneficial for both ends of the pipeline, as the Mississippi RIver is known to flood........

River Record Attempt Ends As Canoe Sinks........

On Friday, the quartet of paddlers attempting to set a speed record for paddling the length of the Mississippi River had to throw in the towel after their canoe sank.

Paddler Scott Miller said that he and his teammates, Joel Ford, Adam Macht and Perry Whitaker, had endured high winds and high surf for the past several days, including Thursday night.

Miller said that the canoe was filling with water much of the time and they were not able to make the speeds that they would ideally go.  The team ended up deciding to abandon ship.  As they boarded the support boat, the canoe slipped beneath the water's surface.  THe group came within 135 miles of achieving their goal........

Kaskaskia Port District, Corps Sign Feasibility Study Agreement........

The Kaskaskia Regional Port District recently hosted a signing ceremony with the St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where they signed the Feasibility Cost Sharing Agreement, which enables federal and non-federal funding to be used for the study.

The study and potential construction project is intended to improve navigational efficiency at Terminal No.2 near Baldwin, Illinois.  It is being performed under the Corps' Continuing Authorities Program, Section 107, which allows the Corps to plan, design and implement certain types of water resources projects without specific congressional authorization.

The Corps with the KRPD and state and local agencies will develop several solutions to problems at the terminal, including shallow depths, narrowing of the oxbow channel, causing a decrease in efficiency and economic losses........

Bridge Repairs Expected To Take Several Months To Complete........

The Arkansas Department of Transportation has fired a bridge inspector that had not reported a large crack in a steel beam, which worsened, causing the Mississippi RIver to be closed to navigation for three days.

On May 11th, the Hernando de Soto bridge was closed to both river and highway traffic after a contractor for ADOT found a fracture in a major structural support beam critical to the span's integrity.

Mississippi River Near Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Officials Looking To Replace Floodwall Mural

It's been almost 30 years since the mural on the eastern side of Cape Girardeau's Riverwall had been painted, and Liz Haynes, Old Town Cape executive director says that it is time for a new look.

Haynes says that the current river wall mural has become a bit of an eyesore which doesn't present a very flattering image of Cape Girardeau to visitors.

Old Town Cape has requested funding from the Cape Girardeau City Council.  It is estimated that the project will cost between $50,000 and $60,000 to complete.........

Fertilizer Firm Plans Riverfront Factory........

Canadian Firm, Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc. recently announced plans for a $25 million refitment of an idled nitrogen plant just north of the McKinley Bridge.

Officials stated that they have decided to site here because of the location's proximity to major Midwest agricultural markets.  The facility will bring in approximately 40 jobs.

The plant is slated to go online next year, eventually scaling up operations to produce some 200.000 tons of the company's proprietary fertilizer, Crystal Green........

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee

2016 Photo Shows Crack In Interstate 40 Bridge........

Photos taken by a kayaker back in 2016 apparently show the large crack in one of the steel beams of the Interstate 40 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee.  The span had been closed indefinitely on May 11th after inspectors spotted the crack.

64 year old Barry W. Moore told reporters that he had taken the photos while kayaking along the Mississippi River in August of 2016 with a group of friends with the Boy Scouts, where he volunteers. Moore went back to check the photos after hearing about the discovery of the crack.

Officials report that repairs are expected to start this week, however, the project could take months to complete.  Road traffic has been diverted to the nearby Interstate 55 Bridge, which is being evaluated to make sure it can handle the additional load........

Officials recently announced that the Lower Current River has been closed to  "non-motorized vessels" because of the high river levels.  The Ozark National Scenic Byways reports that the closure is from Logyard to Gooseneck.

The potential dangers that paddlers may face includes a mhigh volume of swiftly moving water, muddy conditions, which make spotting submerged objects difficult and gravel bars being underwater.

Fireworks Shows Thursday Nights

Pool 26 of the Mississippi River at Alton and Grafton

Some Highlights:

Thursday night from June 3 to Sept. 9 with the exception of Thursday, July 1.

The dazzling light show in Alton will launch from the parking lot at Landmarks and Henry Streets on the city’s riverfront. The Grafton show will launch from Grafton Lighthouse Park.

The Grafton Ferry has added Thursday to its schedule to help encourage people to enjoy the Grafton fireworks. A farmers market will take place in Grafton on Thursdays and the Grafton Music in the Park concert series also takes place Thursday evenings. Both of those events precede the fireworks shows

We have ordered our steel (for the) building and they are in the process of making it. They said it usually takes about 3 months to have it built and delivered. Let’s pray everything goes smoothly and there are no setbacks

Hi Bill!
We have the foundation built!!! Unfortunately, since lumber prices are so high right now we are putting a hold on the build. Hoping all of this ends soon so we can get back to it.

Foundation work started

"The plan is to keep it in the same location, maybe a little closer to the river and up about 7 ft higher. The building will be just a little smaller with a bigger deck."
