According to Old Town Cape board member, Danny Essner, the new mural along the east side of Cape Girardeau's floodwall will be finished by the end of September.  The new mural will be replacing the current 30 year old painting located between the Themis and Broadway entrances.

Last week, Shawn Gunn, owner of Premier Housewash started removing the old mural.  He says that the mural should be completely power washed off by the end of next week.

Blackjack Marina, Jellystone Park Open After Storm Repairs........

Crews worked extremely hard on making repairs to Blackjack Marina and Mark Twain Lake Jellystone Park following the storm that tore through the area on July 9th.  Over the weekend, Blackjack Marina's restaurant reopened, an Jellystone Park reopened one of their major attractions.

Last week, Jellystone Park had announced that repairs to the Waterzone were completed after the uncertainty that it would reopen for the remainder of the season.

Following the storm, the Blackjack Marina wasn't accessible to the public because the main walkway to the building was twisted .  Jim Taylor of Blackjack Marina says that there were plenty of things that had to occur before it was safe enough for people to be in the marina.......

River History....

09 August 1805 in River History

Lt. Zebulon Pike left St. Louis on August 9, 1805 with a small detachment of men and headed up the Mississippi River in search of it's source. He reached St. Anthony Falls in late September the same year. His search for the headwaters was unsuccessful, but he recorded topographical observations, noted populations and residence of Indian tribes to identify possible locations for military posts.

The Redneck Fishing Tournament Has Returned........

Following a two year hiatus because of flooding and then the COVID-19 outbreak, the Redneck Fishing Tournament has returned to the Illinois River. In addition to being a friendly competition between anglers, the tournament is focused on fighting the Asian carp population.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, the Asian carp were brought into the United States in 1963 to naturally control nuisance vegetation without having to resort to the use of chemicals or poisons.  Since then, the Asian carp escaped from captivity and their population exploded, damaging the native fish populations.

Betty Deford, the organizer of the Redneck Fishing Tournament says that the tournament will be he'd next year if her health is ok and the weather permits the event........

Mississippi River Model Could Help Save Louisiana........

There is nothing that can stop the speed and power of the Mississippi River as it flows through the Heartland of Missouri to the Gulf of Mexico.  Each year, the Mississippi River carries nearly 500 million tons of mud from 30 states and dumps it into the Gulf of Mexico.  The issue is that the Mississippi River is not protecting the coast of Louisiana as it once did.

Brian Lezina, chief of planning for the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and his team are working to save the Louisiana Coast by studying a map of southern  Louisiana.

Inside a warehouse in Holden, Massachusetts, Andy Johansson and his team have constructed a model of the Mississippi River that they use to determine the effects of sediment diversion channels.  They use a dye bottle and food coloring and control the velocity of the water to see how much sediment is naturally carried within the channel........

LOTO Property Owners Call For Better Boating, Wake Control........

During a recent town-hall styled meeting was held at the Osage Beach City Hall court room where the main topic of discussion was boat wakes.  THe panel was made up from State Representative Lisa Thomas as well as representatives from Amren and Missouri State Troopers.  about 70 residents attended.

The main point of contention was the wake issue, namely large boats creating potentially dangerous wakes that cause damage to docks, shorelines and endanger lives.

Another topic on the meeting agenda was noise and speed violations on large vessels.  Highway Patrol/Water Patrol personnel state that they have noise meters aboard the Water Patrol boats and may issue citations or warnings if the allowable noise threshold is violated.........

Riverfront Street Party Returns At Quincy Boat Club's New Home........

This weekend, the Quincy Boat Club held a two day celebration for their new home with the return of their Riverfront Street Party.  The Quincy Boat Club is now located at the Former Pier restaurant property, just south of the former boat club location.

The Quincy Boat Club demolished their former digs in early 2020 after repeatedly being damaged by flooding.  The club was preparing to construct an entirely new structure.

The arrival of the COVID-19 outbreak ended up being a blessing in disguise, as the owner of the Pier restaurant made the decision not to reopen the restaurant, leaving the property available........

A Few Pointers On Handling Wakes........

A busy day on the water can mean having to navigate through rough conditions with many boats creating wakes.  Windy and stormy days can whip up the water as well, resulting in the captain having to make adjustments to keep the boat and passengers safe.

One of the key factors in handling rough conditions is to know the boat and understand that speed and trim will make the difference between bouncing about and riding above it.  If there is precious cargo aboard, take the wake slowly and throttle through it.

The rule of thumb to taking waves is slicing through them at a 45 degree angle, however, every boat is different, and this approach may need adjusting to suit your particular vessel.  Nearby traffic is going to play a factor in your angle of attack as well........

Asian Carp Update

Missouri Scientists Studying Asian Carp Egg Movements........

Over the past several decades, four invasive species of Asian carp have been out-competing native fish species for food and endangering the ecosystem within the rivers of middle-America.

During the same time, officials and scientists have been looking for ways to control the Asian carp population, from utilizing commercial fishermen and installing barriers limit the movement of carp upstream.

Now, scientists with the University of Missouri and the U.S. Geological Survey have come up with what may be a possible breakthrough:  they are studying the way Asian carp eggs move in the rivers in the hope that they can be killed off while still young........

Volunteers Clean Up The St. Louis Riverfront........

On Friday, a group of volunteers took to the downtown area along the St. Louis riverfront to clean up litter.  The plastic and trash they ends up in the Mississippi River, the area's largest source of drinking water has an effect on areas outside of the St. Louis region.

Erin Hilligoss-Volkman, director of education with the Gateway Arch says that if you throw out trash at a store's parking lot, three out of five pieces of trash will end up in the river system.

THe Gateway Arch National Park and the Missouri Stream Team had partnered up for the cleanup effort on Friday.  Over the next several days, there will be other cleanups in various parts of the Meramec River watershed........

Open House

M/V Mississippi

Melvin Price Lock and Dam

St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

We invite you aboard the largest diesel towboat on the Mississippi River!
Tours of the MV Mississippi vessels are free, offered on a first come, first serve basis. The vessel is not wheelchair accessible due to the stairways and small hallways.
For safety and COVID-19 concerns, groups will be limited to 10 with a maximum limit of 80 visitors allowed onboard at any time while all will be required to wear a mask and temperature checks may be required.
More than 90% of the MV MISSISSIPPI’S vessels time is spent as a working towboat for the Corps Memphis District. Its main role is moving barges, equipment, and supplies on the Mississippi River in support of the mat sinking operations. The Mat Sinking Unit places hundreds of thousands of articulated concrete mats, also known as revetment, along the Mississippi River to protect flood control works, prevent riverbank erosion and provide navigable waterways for commercial transportation.
The unit’s work spans the jurisdictions of the Memphis, Vicksburg, and New Orleans districts and more than 1,500 river miles. Unparalleled across the world, the mat sinking unit is a feat of skilled labor and technological innovation. A mat sinking barge, a mat supply barge, quarter barges, spar barges, gantry cranes, bulldozers, and motor vessels are among the equipment used by the unit to help maintain the Mississippi River’s stabilization and navigation.
The Mississippi River Commission, established in 1879, uses the MV MISSISSIPPI to host public hearings, a process unique to the Mississippi River Commission and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, that allow the public a greater voice in shaping federal policy by discussing their concerns with those individuals responsible for improving the condition of the river, fostering navigation, promoting commerce, and reducing flood risk along the watershed.

Missouri Fishing News

Perry County Man Shoots 125 Pound Bighead Carp........

Photo courtesy Missouri Dept of Conservation

Check out this monster! Matt Neuling now qualifies for a world record after shooting this 125-pound carp at Lake Perry.

On Thursday, the Missouri Department of Conservation announced that last month, a Perry County man shot a 125 pound, 5 ounce bighead carp while bowfishing, setting a new state record.

Perryville resident Matt Neuling shot the giant carp on July 24th at Lake Perry.  Neuling says that he and a buddy shot what they believed was a 30 pound grass carp.  He added that his buddy's arrow pulled out, but his stayed put.  His friend sent another arrow through the fish.

Neuling says that if he didn't have his buddy with him, there would have been no way he could have gotten the fish out of the water.  The Missouri Department of Conservation aged the fish at about 10 years old.........

Illinois River Near Bath, Illinois

Asian Carp Fishing Tournament ........

The central Illinois fishing tournament that was cancelled for the past two years due to flooding and then the COVID-19 outbreak will be returning to Bath, Illinois next month.

The Redneck Fishing Tournament is slated for August 6 - 7, 2021.  This tournament is one of the more creative responses to the Asian carp invasion into the Illinois River.

THe fish are known to jump into the air with the sound of boat engines, so instead of using fishing poles to catch the carp, they will be using nets to catch them in the air........

ABYC Introduces "Biggest Update" of Standards........

The American Boat and Yacht Council recently released the 61 supplement to their Standards and Technical Information Reports for Small Craft, which features the latest in boatbuilding and repair standards.

ABYC technical director Brian Goodwin says that this is the largest update in ABYC's history.  He adds that the committees addressed the growing demand for electric propulsion, as well as increasingly more complex electrical systems showing up on boats.

Over 75 percent of these revised documents are included as the standards basis for the National Marine Manufacturers Association's Boat and Yacht Certification Program........

News Release From BoatUS

Hop On A Plane For A Mini-Vacation....

CHARLESTON, S.C., Aug. 4, 2021 — With more people hitting the water due to the pandemic comes a need to ensure those behind the helm of a powerboat have the right training. The 501(c)(3) BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, a national leader in boating safety education, is helping fill this critical need in the Charleston area by partnering with a local non-profit dedicated to on-the-water boater education, SaferBoater, to offer range of affordable beginner to advanced half-day courses starting August 21–22.

Course offerings include “Intro to Boating,” “Precision Docking and Boat Handling,” “Open Water Boat Handling” and “Open Water Advanced Maneuvering.” Each is three hours long and taught aboard single-engine center-console powerboats. Minimum class size is two persons and maximum of four students per vessel, ensuring each student gets sufficient time behind the helm under the watchful eye of a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain certified to teach the National Safe Boating Council modular curriculum.

The cost is $175 per person. The minimum age to participate is 12 years old, and training follows COVID safety protocols. To register, go to BoatUS.org/On-Water.

Said BoatUS Foundation Education Coordinator Alan Dennison, “SaferBoater’s professional instructors, armed with a standard-setting curriculum, give first-time boat owners a new found confidence on the water and help more experienced boaters build on their skills.” The Foundation currently offers on-water training at nine East Coast locations from Massachusetts to Georgia with plans to expand to Great Lakes and western states.

SaferBoater’s Capt. Jennifer McQuicken said, “As passionate boaters ourselves, we are thrilled to be partnering with the BoatUS Foundation to bring these valuable courses to our fellow boaters in Lowcountry.”

The Sierra Club Illinois

Mississippi Earthtones Festival

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, August 2, 2021

Contact: Hannah Lee Flath, hannahlee.flath@sierraclub.org, 860-634-0225
  Christine Favilla, christine.favilla@sierraclub.org, 618-401-7870

Call for Proposals for 15th Annual Mississippi Earthtones Festival Artist Grants

Grants up to $300 will be awarded to 5 artists to build large art installations throughout the festival grounds

ALTON, IL -- The Sierra Club Illinois’ Three Rivers Project and Alton Main Street are calling for proposals for artist grants for the 15th annual Mississippi Earthtones Festival. The festival, which will be held from 12:00 to 10:00 PM on Saturday, September 18, brings together thousands of community members in celebration of the Mississippi River through art, music, and conservation. Local artists are invited to submit proposals via this form by August 27 to fill the festival grounds with beauty and creativity while enhancing the festival for visitors through interactive art experiences.

The Mississippi Earthtones Festival is held annually as part of the state of Illinois’ “It’s Our River Day”, an initiative to celebrate Illinois watersheds through education, recreation, and conservation. This year, the festival’s theme is metamorphosis. Local artists of all types are invited to submit a proposal via this submission form by August 27 for the chance to receive a $300 grant to build an art installation on the festival’s grounds. Street artists, textile artists, fashion designers, and makers of products from upcycled and natural materials are especially encouraged to apply. More information about the Mississippi Earthtones Festival can be found at www.facebook.com/EarthtonesFestival.

“After spending over a year in a cocoon of sorts, I’m thrilled that this year’s theme is metamorphosis,” says event co-organizer and Sierra Club Illinois’ Three Rivers Project co-coordinator Christine Favilla. “This year’s theme for the Mississippi Earthtones Festival connects beautifully to our mission to conserve, protect the environment, and enjoy the great outdoors. I’m excited to see what artists will come up with to represent the community’s metamorphosis.”

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

A Look Back At The Wiggins Ferry Company........

When it comes to crossing the Mississippi River from St. Louis to Illinois, drivers have five bridges to choose from.  This wasn't always the case.  For the first several decades of St. Louis' existence, getting across the river was your problem.

In 1797, Captain James S. Piggott was given the right to operate a ferry along the Mississippi River between St. Louis and the Illinois.  Passengers would load into canoes at Piggott's Ferry house at the foot of Market Street.

Over the coming years, the ferry changed hands several times, eventually ending up in the hands of Samuel Wiggins, whose name would be tied tot he ferry for over a century to come........

News Release From BoatUS

ANNAPOLIS, Md., August 3, 2021 – Do you have an out-of-the-box idea that could improve boating safety or the environmental health of local waters? The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water Grassroots Grant program provides local groups up to $10,000 each to help educate boaters on safe and clean boating topics. A 365-day rolling grant application process allows applicants to apply at any time throughout the year. To get started, all a local group has to do is submit a short letter of intent explaining its idea.

The goal of the BoatUS member-funded program is to facilitate behavioral changes in the boating community through grassroots projects, some of which have ranged from hands-on education about the effects of marine debris, video public service announcements on preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species, and a unique pilot study of fiberglass recycling.

“Think big. Think never-been-done-before,” said BoatUS Foundation Director of Outreach Alanna Keating. “Is the project potentially scalable? Is there extensive outreach to boaters? Does it include hands-on work with the boating community? Does it offer quantifiable measures of success?”

Added Keating, “Over the past year we have seen a surge in new boat owners who have never owned or operated a boat before. Is there a way our grant program can help these first-time boaters improve their focus on safety or clean water, which can have an impact over the course of their boating life?”

Boat and yacht clubs, environmental groups, nonprofit organizations, student groups or local chapters of national organizations such as BASS, U.S. Power Squadrons and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are encouraged to apply. The timeline for grant projects is one year or less.

Grant funding is not designed for capital improvements or general operating funds, projects that include lobbying efforts or political action, or those that provide specialized training or equipment for the recipient group members. Expenses for transportation, meals or lodging, purchase of electronic hardware/software, or boats and other boating gear are also not covered.

Since 1989, the Foundation has awarded more than $1.3 million in boating safety and clean water grants to organizations. For more information or to apply, go to BoatUS.org/Grants.

Soybean Farmers Believe Half A Billion Dollars Is Buried At The Bottom Of The Mississippi River........

Close to half a billion dollars is buried at the bottom of the Mississippi River, and the U.S. soybean industry believes that this treasure is located at a depth of 50 feet.

Currently, a huge effort is underway to dredge the lowermost 250 miles of the Mississippi River channel to a depth of 50 feet, and this could provide a significant financial windfall for American farmers.

Currently, the majority of ships loading soybeans can handle 2.4 million bushels, but any more will cause the ships to run aground.  With the extra 5 feet added to the channel, the ships could carry up to 2.9 million bushels, which could in turn generate an additional $461 million annually for the U.S. soybean industry........

News Release From BoatUS

SPRINGFIELD, Va., Aug. 2, 2021 – To a boater, it’s a cringeworthy sight – a boat sitting on a disabled trailer unattended on the side of the road, typically because the boat’s owner has gone to seek help. While it’s likely many of these incidents go unnoticed by the public, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) 24-hour dispatch centers reported 6,635 requests for BoatUS Trailer Assist roadside assistance service in 2020.

With the summer boat trailering season at its peak, the national advocacy, services and safety group looked into the top five reasons boat trailers break down. Surprisingly, just two preventive measures could eliminate nearly two-thirds of all potential breakdowns.

BoatUS reports the No. 1 reason (44%) BoatUS members requested roadside assistance was for trailer tire troubles, including owners who failed to carry a spare tire. Low tire pressure is the leading cause of a trailer tire's early demise, so check the pressure often, and never leave home without a serviceable spare. (Don’t forget to check the pressure in the spare, too!)

Wheel bearings (21%) were the second largest cause of roadside assistance requests. If your hubs are submerged, bearing protectors are critical to prevent water intrusion and resulting bearing failure. At a minimum, bearings need to be inspected and repacked once a year.

While focusing on these two items alone can potentially prevent 65% of all trailer mishaps, boat owners should additionally be aware that the No. 3 reason to request roadside BoatUS Trailer Assist service was trailer axle issues (11%), followed by trailer failure (6%) and tow vehicle failure (5%). Periodic inspections and routine maintenance are the best ways to reduce the chances for these types of breakdowns.

Added to a Basic BoatUS Membership ($25) for $15, BoatUS Trailer Assist will tow your towing vehicle and boat trailer to the nearest repair facility or safe location up to 100 miles from the location of breakdown. Boat launch ramp winching, fuel drop-off and lock-out services are included. Known as the Boat Owners Auto Club, BoatUS Trailer Assist also provides coverage to the tow vehicle while towing.

BoatUS offers a short video safety checklist to prevent boat trailer breakdowns, and for more information on BoatUS Trailer Assist go to BoatUS.com/TrailerAssist.

The bridge had been closed since May 11th after a major fracture was discovered in a steel beam.  Crews with the Arkansas and Tennessee Departments of Transportation just barely made their deadline of beginning to reopen the span by the end of July.

Officials report that transportation crews worked around the clock to repair not only the fractured beam with bolted steel plates, but they reinforced the bridge by repairing 16 additional plates followed by ultrasonic testing........

Mississippi River Distilling CO. Opened Celebration Center........

On Sunday, the Mississippi River Distilling Company opened their new Celebration Center.  According to owner Ryan Burchett, the three-level expansion took three years to complete.

Burchett says that the project was affected by the COVID outbreak, as the scarcity of supplies such as construction equipment and bar supplies led to difficulty completing the project.

While Le Claire is always busy from a tourism standpoint, Burchett is hoping his new facility will benefit the city as another attraction to get people to overnight in the town........
