Grafton Bluff Fire Smoldered Into Saturday........

From Friday evening on into Saturday morning, Firefighters from several municipalities were fighting a brush fire along the river bluffs east of Raging Rivers Water Park.  The fire was difficult to access because of the terrain.

Some area residents likened the fire to one that occurred a few years ago near Pere Marquette State Park.  That fire was severe enough that it took several days to bring it under control.

The QEM Fire Department was assisted by the Godfrey, Jersey, Brighton and Fieldon Fire Departments on Friday.  Crews were monitoring the area for flare-ups........

Grafton Giving Away Free River Bluff Lots Through Rebate Program........

The population of the tiny town of Grafton Illinois had dwindled following the Great Flood of 1993, and over the past five years, the city has stepped up their efforts to lure new residents to the region.

City officials are working to promote Grafton Hills, which is a subdivision established in part by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.  The subdivision is located high atop a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River.

The city of Grafton is basically giving away lots to people who are willing to build homes on them through a rebate program.  The city owns 26 lots that are listed for sale and are part of the land giveaway........

Proposed Mid-Breton Sediment Diversion Project Has Been Downsized........

In order to keep the proposed $800 million Mid-Breton Sediment Diversion project within budget and minimize the likelihood of flooding roads and fishing camps, Louisiana has decreased the amount of water to flow through the completed project.

Originally intended to divert up to 75,000 cubic feet of Mississippi River floodwaters, the project is now being designed to divert a maximum of 50,000 cubic feet of water.

The proposed river diversion would be constructed south of Wills Point along the east bank of the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish.  The project is intended to add 31 square miles of new land in Breton Sound, shoring up this section of Louisiana coast........

Some Highlights of This Week's

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS

District 8 MRS                                                 UPDATED NOVEMBER 17, 2021

Mississippi River System

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

~

ILLINOIS WATERWAY

CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
The following zones are in the high water watch phase in accordance with the Illinois Waterway Action Plan Annex:
  Copperas (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0),
  Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0),
  Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3) and
  Meredosia (Mile 82.0 – Mile 50.0).
Mariners should exercise caution and minimize wake in all high water zones. The laying-up on saturated levees is prohibited. Mariners should be experienced in high water conditions and to avoid down-streaming operation. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in debris and maneuver appropriately. Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have occurred and take appropriate action to prevent barge breakaways. Exercise caution in all passing/meeting situations as swift current may be present. Navigation buoys may have been dragged off station, so remain alert while transiting. Recreational traffic is discouraged.

MILE 80.2 - L/D CLOSURE/WICKET MAINTENANCE/DIVE OPERATION
Continuing until further notice, wicket maintenance will be conducted at LaGrange L/D in the vicinity of Mile 80.2. This operation will involve the use of divers. Mariners MUST contact the LaGrange L/D and the M/V CREVE COEUR via VHF-FM Channel 13, 14 or 82, a minimum of 1-mile away from the L/D, to determine status of this operation. Mariners may be requested to hold up, before transiting over the dam, to enable the divers to safely exit the water and the maintenance fleet to reposition. The purpose of this closure is to inspect and repair wickets 108 and 109, which requires the dam to be down. Mariners are urged to transit the area at their slowest safe speed to minimize their wake and proceed with caution after passing arrangements have been made. Mariners may contact the USACE Little Rock District at (309) 665-2679, for additional information.

MISSOURI RIVER
CHANNEL CONDITION/COTP ADVISORY
The following reaches are in the low water watch phase in accordance with the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
  Jefferson (Mile 200.0 – Mile 100.0) and
  Washington (Mile 100.0 – Mile 0.0).
Deep draft tows are advised to depart the area. Due to narrow channel width and to minimize damage, vessels shall transit these reaches at their slowest safe speed. Tow operators are advised to place their heaviest barges in the middle of the tow and identify fleeting areas in the event of a river closure.

National Great Rivers Museum Resuming Dam Tours........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers River Project Office recently announced that they will once again open the top of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam to tours.

The National Great Rivers Museum had modified their free dam tours in March of 2020 to remain on the ground level due to the COVID-19 outbreak, as the elevator ride to the top of the dam was excluded from the tour for COVID safety reasons.

Now, for the first time in 20 months, visitors will be able to see the Mississippi River and barge traffic from the unique vantage point while learning about the locks and dam system and the value of river navigation........

The Great River Road Race Returns........

On Saturday, November 27, 2021, a Thanksgiving tradition, the Great River Road Race, will be returning following a year off because of COVID.  The race is sponsored by the Alton Road Runners Club in Alton.

The Great River Road Race is a 10 mile run that begins and ends in Downtown Alton.  The race will start at 10 am.  There is also a shorter 5K run.  The 10 mile run is five miles along the Great River Road, with the Mississippi RIver on one side and the towering bluffs on the other.

Several Fire Departments Battling Bluff Fire........

On Friday, multiple fire departments were called out to fight a fire that broke out along the bluffs overlooking the Great River Road and the Mississippi River near Grafton, Illinois.

QEM Fire Chief Gerry New said that the QEM, Godfrey, Jerseyville, Brighton and Fieldon Fire Departments responded to the call.  He added that the firefighters will remain on-scene as long as it is safe to battle the blaze and someone would remain on hand to keep watch overnight.

Chief New says that the bluff terrain is terrible for fighting fires.  He expressed his gratitude for the manpower offered by the other fire departments.  He says that he will assess the situation Saturday morning and hopes they won't have to continue fighting the fire on Saturday........

Ceremony Held Commemorating Cape's New Riverfront Mural........

On Friday, Cape Girardeau residents were joined by representatives from Visit Cape, Old Town Cape, the City of Cape Girardeau and artist Craig Thomas for a ceremony commemorating the completion of the new Cape Girardeau floodwall mural.

Past Old Town Cape board president Danny Essner said that he had high expectations, but Thomas exceeded them.  He states that the mural is quite spectacular.  Cape Girardeau Mayor Bob Fox says that he is amazed at the details in the mural letters, which show not just the city, but the region as well.

Fox believes that the mural will attract out-of-town tourists, especially boaters.  He adds that he is hopeful that the city can capitalize on boater traffic in the future with the addition of a marina........

Mariners should exercise caution and minimize wake in all high water zones. The laying-up on saturated levees is prohibited. Mariners should be experienced in high water conditions and to avoid down-streaming operation. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in debris and maneuver appropriately.

NMMA President Frank Hugelmeyer says that the decision to postpone the shows was made after considering the needs and economics of the regions where the shows were planned, especially now that supply chain disruptions have caused low inventory levels.

Hugelmeyer adds that the unprecedented market conditions are forcing event producers around the globe to be more flexible than ever while providing the opportunity to connect with attendees in new and more relevant ways........

Mississippi River Near Herculaneum, Missouri

Planned Port In Jefferson County To Proceed........

Officials recently announced that plans for a new Mississippi River port near Herculaneum, Missouri in Jefferson County will be proceeding.  This major announcement came with the signed letter of intent to launch the new shipping port.

Jefferson County Port Authority President Derrick Good says that American Patriot Holdings and the Port of Plaquemines plan to send shipping containers through the Panama Canal and the Gulf of Mexico and eventually docking at the new port approximately 30 miles south of St. Louis.

Good added that the new port would give Jefferson County the chance to take full advantage of the Mississippi River, which so far has been an underutilized asset........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Still Plenty Of Work To Do On The Riverfront........

As fall is giving way to winter, the pace of outdoor projects tends to slow or even halt altogether, but according to Andy Dorian, Hannibal's director of central services, there is plenty of work to be done along the riverfront.

During the October meeting of the Hannibal Park Board, Dorian stated that they are still working with some electrical projects as well as some security cameras for the marina.

Other riverfront projects include the installation of a handicap accessible kayak dock, as the previous one was damaged during a storm in August, and the installation of a pavilion that is being donated by the Rotary Club........

Clarksville, Missouri Mayor Jo Anne Smiley recently penned a letter to the Hannibal Courier-Post that states the need to address governmental responses to disasters such as flooding.

Smiley states that the Flood Resiliency and Taxpayer Savings Act would restore accountability and update the methods the government uses when planning new infrastructure using 21st century technology and resources.

Smiley claims that the bipartisan Flood Resiliency and Taxpayer Savings Act would be what it claims to be, a time and money saver, and calls on Congress to approve the legislation........

Boatbuilders Testing Yamaha's Harmo E-Outboard........

Yamaha has invested a considerable amount of time developing their Harmo e-outboard.  The first generation of the system was introduced in Europe in 2016, and the newest version was unveiled in September.  It is expected to begin appearing on American boats in 2023.

The electric outboard race is on, as Brunswick recently announced that they would be fielding five electric propulsion systems by 2023.  The Vision Marine E-Motion 180 E is already on the market.

High power electric outboards seem to be the future, however, the current lithium-battery technology is not ready to surpass fossil fuels as a mainstream power source.  The Harmo system doesn't focus on big power, but rather quiet, precise control, smoothness and maneuverability........

November 16, 1811 in Life Jacket History

Life preservers made of cork were patented by Napoleon Guerin in NYC

From Wikipedia
Napoleon Guerin of New York City, United States is an inventor who obtained a U.S. patent for the first life preserver made of cork on November 16, 1841. It was constructed in jacket form, with two layers of material between which the cork could be inserted. Guerin suggested using between 18 and 20 quarts of rasped or grated cork, depending on the weight of the person, but he was not specific about the type of fabric to be used in the jacket, saying only that it could be "made of cotton or any other material."

Corps Discusses Dredging Projects, Mississippi River Valley Needs........

During the recent Waterways Symposium held in St. Louis, Missouri, Edward Belk, Jr., director of programs for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi Valley Division said that a chunk of the division's dredging budget goes to the Lower Mississippi River.

The Mississippi River Division dredges around 265 million cubic yards of silt, sand and mud each year and around 40 percent of that comes from the Lower Mississippi River.  About 15 percent of the dredging budget is used in the New Orleans District.

Another priority in the Mississippi Valley is in the Alton Pool Project in the Illinois River, which intends to restore several "degraded" islands within the pool........

Mississippi River Shipping

Answer To Supply Chain Issues May Lay Along The Mississippi River........

The solution to America's supply chain shortage may by solved, at least in part, by a new plan to send shipping containers from the Panama Canal, through the Gulf of Mexico, up the Mississippi River to a Jefferson County, Missouri port.

Derrick Good, president of the Jefferson County Port Authority says that to get a container to the Midwest, it has to go through Los Angeles.  He adds that several things have happened, including the expansion of the Panama Canal, the construction of the Port of Plaquemines and the design of new barges designed to carry shipping containers.

U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, (R-Missouri) says that the Mississippi River is suddenly becoming more important than it has been in the past 100 years, and the funding for expanding shipping infrastructure is in the recently passed infrastructure bill........

News Release From BoatUS

SPRINGFIELD, VA, Nov. 15, 2021 – With President Biden's signing today of the $1.2 trillion bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), you may have mistakenly thought that only road, bridge, rail, power and water infrastructure, public transit, drinking and wastewater, high speed internet, environmental, and clean energy interests may benefit. The nation’s largest advocacy, services, and safety group, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), says recreational boaters also made some significant gains on the bill touted as a “once-in-a-generation investment in our infrastructure.”

The biggest payoff for boaters with the IIJA comes the reauthorization of the “Sport Fish Restoration, Recreational Boating Safety, and Wildlife Restoration Act of 2021,” which provides funding for state-based conservation programs, boating safety, aquatic resources education, pumpout, derelict vessel, fisheries management and restoration.

‘Sport Fish’ also funds recreational boat access, such as local launch ramps, as well as the highly popular Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) program that grows the availability of safe and protected harborage for overnight, transient boaters. A “user pay – public benefit” funding mechanism, Sport Fish’s nearly $650 million trust fund budget comes from boat fuel taxes and excise taxes paid by boaters and anglers purchasing fishing and boating equipment.

“The reauthorization of Sport Fish is the cornerstone of so much of what recreational boaters and anglers connect to while on the water,” said BoatUS Manager of Government Affairs David Kennedy. He adds, “BoatUS greatly thanks Sport Fish reauthorization bill sponsors, Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Roger Wicker (R-MS), and Reps. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Garett Graves (R-LA). Their bipartisanship is a big plus for boaters and anglers.”

Sport Fish reauthorization will also pay for a comprehensive study on the growing number of nonmotorized paddlecraft, resultant user conflicts, and potential for increased accidents. Kennedy notes that while paddlecraft operators utilize launch ramps and other recreational boating facilities, “they do not currently pay into the trust fund, and we need to look at how to equitably fund waterway access points.”

IIJA also provides funds to US Army Corps of Engineers and other water-resource projects, including inland waterways construction, flood control, resiliency, watershed rehabilitation, aquatic ecosystem restoration, invasive species control, marine debris removal, and inland and coastal navigation projects — all good things to any boater’s or angler’s ear.

Fishy Tales From Marco Island, Florida

A Python Took A Boat Ride From The Keys To Marco Island........

Police report that an adventurous python recently snuck aboard a sailboat in the Florida Keys and took a nearly 100 mile boat ride to the southwestern coast of Florida.

On Friday, crew members found the 7 foot python in the boat's shower after docking in Marco Island following the trip from Indian Key, a distance of about 95 miles around the southern tip of the peninsula.

Police responded quickly, transferring the wayward snake to a local wildlife handler.  Pythons, thought to have been descendants of pets freed from captivity have overrun southern Florida, devouring native mammal and bird populations........

Illinois Fishing News

IDNR Investigating Origins Of Potential State Record Bighead Carp........

Illinois angler Jarrett Knize was recently fishing for bass at the Humboldt Park Lagoon in Chicago when he reeled in a giant bighead carp.  Once it was on a certified scale, the invasive fish weighed in at 72 pounds, 9 ounces.  It will be a state record if chief of fisheries Mike McClelland signs off.

Biologist Frank Jakubicek certified the carp's weight and forwarded the paperwork to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  He says that there are other protocols to follow after an invasive carp is caught in an odd location; commercial fisherman will be brought in to see if there are any others.

Chief of fisheries Kevin Irons says that there has been a history of these fish cropping up in urban lagoons where catfish had been stocked.  Apparently, a few decades ago, there were bighead carp mixed in with the catfish and stocked from an out-of-state hauler.  Irons adds that the bighead carp found are typically very old........

Ohio River Closed Due To Towboat Fire........

On Tuesday, November 9th, the U.S. Coast Guard closed down a portion of the Ohio River near Belleview, Kentucky because of a fire breaking out aboard the towing vessel Captain Kirby Dupuis.

The towboat was in transit when the fire occurred in the engine room.  The vessel's crew extinguished the fire using the vessel's fire suppression system, however, a reflash occurred.

The U.S. Coast Guard closed down the Ohio River to all vessel traffic between Mile Markers 499 and 501 near Belleview, Kentucky, but reopened the river a short time later........

Mississippi River At Bettendorf, Iowa

A Photo Of A Mississippi River Icon To Become A U.S. Postage Stamp........

Back in 2015, Rock Island resident David Sebben took a photo of the American Queen as she was docked along the Mississippi River in Bettendorf, Iowa, intent on capturing the steamboat's lights against the darkening blue sky in the background and the stillness of the Mississippi River.

Little did Sebben know that his picture would fit perfectly on a postage stamp.  Five years later, Sebben got word that his photo had been selected to be part of the U.S. Postal Service's Mighty Mississippi stamp series.

The Mighty Mississippi Stamp series includes stamps for each state that touches the Mississippi River.  Other stamps include the head of the Mississippi River in Minnesota, the swamps of Mississippi and St. Louis' own Gateway Arch representing Missouri........

News Release From BoatUS

March 20, 2018 –

ANNAPOLIS, Md., Nov. 12, 2021 – Bulky, square orange life vests have given way to more comfortable belt- or harness-style inflatable floatation devices, yet many recreational boaters still carry only the former aboard. Are boaters up-to-date on today’s newest technology-inspired boating safety gear? With the holidays around the corner, the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water offers a

buying guide for technology geeks and anyone interested in innovation that increases safety aboard a boat.

Handheld DSC-VHF Radio: Today’s portable, floating handheld VHF radios can be used anywhere aboard your boat, and are a great communications-navigation solution for small boats as well as a backup for larger vessels. Newest handhelds can incorporate GPS, Digital Selective Calling (DSC), one-button distress, Bluetooth, an FM receiver, and even SOS blinking lights giving boaters more ways than ever to keep out of trouble or speed a rescue. Models start at $200. Before you use your DSC-VHF radio, be sure to get your radio’s Maritime Mobile Service Identity Number (MMSI) that is your vessel’s unique ID. BoatUS members may request one for free. Tip: Adhere this number along with the owner’s contact information to the radio – it will help with future registration changes.

Personal Locator Beacon (PLB): Just a little bigger than a Tic Tac breath mint container, today’s PLBs can be carried in a shirt or life vest pocket, or easily attached to clothing or outerwear. Costs have also come down, with prices starting at a little over $100. Some organized boating events such as sailboat races increasingly require PLB wear, but if you don’t want to purchase them for your entire crew the BoatUS Foundation rents PLBs for as little as $7 a day.

Inflatable Life Jacket: Today’s smallest inflatable life jackets, worn belt-style across the waist, are incredibly not much larger than a box of mac and cheese. However, while they do provide for U.S. Coast Guard life jacket wear requirements, manually activated (yank the cord) inflatables need to be donned while in the water and are not intended for the unconscious. For that, harness-style inflatables can be utilized in automatic mode, which will keep the victim’s head above the water. Belt-style life jackets generally start at under $100, while harness-styles start around $150. At about $200, hybrid life jackets also offer a mix of inflation and foam floatation, keeping them smaller yet allowing for comfort and a full range of movement.

Throwable Life Saving Device: Technology has even come to the basic throwable device, a U.S. Coast Guard-required safety item meant to be kept within arm’s reach while underway. The most common is a floating seat cushion. However, the newest throwable devices are much smaller, simple to stow and touted as easier to toss to a crewmate in the water. Once the device hits the water, a rescue yellow raft automatically inflates offering a minimum of 20 pounds of floatation. One caveat: Like inflatable life jackets, they require an annual inspection. Prices start around $150.

13 November 1991 in River History

The Arabia Steamboat Museum, that houses artifacts salvaged from the Arabia, opened it's doors on November 13, 1991 in Kansas City, Mo. It is advertised as the largest single collection of pre-Civil War artifacts in the world. The Steamboat Arabia sunk on the Missouri River in 1856 after hittin a snag. Over the years the Missouri River channel changed and it was rediscovered in 1988 lying 45 feet below a corn field.

The steamboat was excavated and the well preserved contents are in the museum.

Corps Sent Dredge Goetz For Pilot Project........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District and the St Paul District teamed up to bring the Corps' Dredge Goetz onto the Missouri River from late October through early November to participate in a pilot project to remove sediment that had accumulated in the shipping channel.

Major John Chambers, deputy commander of the Kansas City District says that the Missouri River typically self-maintains it's shipping channel via a series of engineered structures, however, damage to the structures caused by flooding prevents them from doing their job.

Major Chambers said that through this pilot program, the Goetz has provided critical assistance to the Kansas City District.  He adds that the district had the opportunity to assess the effectiveness of the larger dredge normally used along the Mississippi River for it's deeper channels and greater volume of commercial traffic........

Update:  Analysis Attributes I-40 Bridge Beam Fracture To It's Manufacture........

According to a recently released forensic analysis commissioned by the Arkansas Department of Transportation, the crack in a steel beam that prompted the emergency three month closure of the Interstate 40 Hernando De Soto Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Memphis likely originated during the beam's fabrication some 50 years ago.

Once removed from the bridge, the beam was sent to Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. in Northbrook, Illinois for assessment via a battery of fractographic and metallographic tests to determine the cause of the beam fracture and other contributing factors.  The laboratory also tested the steel to verify the material conformed to the relevant ASTM requirements.

The metallographic examination revealed two fabrication weld repairs at tie girder thickness transition points.  These repairs led to the formation of two large hydrogen cracks as the result of the inherent restraint, improper preheat and/or the use of contaminate welding electrodes commonly associated with weld repairs performed without a fracture control plan........

Crews Replaced First Five Dam Wickets........

This year, crews with the U.S. Army Corps of engineers Louisville District replaced the first five wickets at the Olmstead Locks and Dam in the midst of a season that had them raising the wicket dam a record 10 times so far.

The Olmstead Locks and Dam opened in August of 2018 and was built with two lock chambers, a fixed weir, five tainter gates and a boat-operated wicket dam that lays flat on the river bottom during high river flows, and is raised during times of low water.

According to Ryan Lawrence, the Louisville District's assistant operations manager, they intend to replace all the wickets every 10 years,  This means that they will be replacing 14 wickets each year.  The wickets are refurbished and prepped for future use........

12 November 1974 In River History

A salmon was discovered in the River Thames, England, for the first time since 1833.
Note: The Thames has had a "significant" salmon population, the researchers write. "It is mentioned as far back as the Magna Carta (1215), and a substantial fishery existed until the early 19th century. The industrial revolution and urbanization brought pollution and the last record was in 1833."

Since 1974many attempts have been made to to reintroduce salmon to the Thames, but have proved unsuccessful.

Boater Charged After Man Thrown From Boat Drowns........

On Tuesday, the Camden County Circuit Court announced that Dylan T. McEwen was charged with Boating While Intoxicated, leading to the death of another in conjunction with the August 8th drowning death of Sean P. Jouglard.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol had reported that Jouglard drowned after voluntarily exiting the boat to go swimming.  Further investigation revealed that the other passenger's accounts of the incident did not match up with what other witnesses and security camera footage saw.

A nearby security camera reveals Jouglard was thrown in the air four times as the boat struck a large wake.  He landed in the boat three times, but on the fourth time, he was thrown overboard and did not resurface.  He was found the next day in 80 feet of water........

Sierra Club Piasa Palisades Group and Alton Main Street to Host 19th Annual Green Gift Bazaar on Small Business Saturday

ALTON, IL -- The Sierra Club Illinois Piasa Palisades Group and Alton Main Street are celebrating Small Business Saturday by hosting the 19th annual Green Gift Bazaar on Saturday, November 27! The event gives community members the opportunity to purchase “green” gifts for upcoming special occasions and support small businesses during the holiday season. Plan a day of shopping with your friends and family to celebrate Small Business Saturday and pick up unique, locally-made, eco-friendly gifts for everyone on your list, including herbal products, jewelry, art, ornaments, houseplants, clothing, and so much more!

Join us in Downtown Alton between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM on Saturday, November 27 at two different locations—the Jacoby Arts Center located at 627 East Broadway and the Post Commons located at 300 Alby Street. The event is being hosted in two locations in downtown Alton simultaneously to help spread out the crowd. There is no entry fee to shop at either location. Both locations will feature vendors selling a variety of environmentally-friendly gift ideas that are made from recycled or upcycled materials, Fair Trade, or hand crafted in the United States. In addition, shoppers will receive information about sales from downtown Alton retailers and restaurants. For more information, visit the event page on Facebook at fb.me/e/Z7RyWATv.

“The Piasa Palisades Group of Sierra Club Illinois aims to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources, and the Green Gift Bazaar is a fun, holiday-themed opportunity to put that mission into action,” says Christine Favilla, Co-Coordinator of the Three Rivers Project with Sierra Club Illinois. “We look forward to welcoming community members from the Piasa Palisades region and beyond to the 19th annual Green Gift Bazaar on November 27 and kickstarting the holiday season with Mother Earth in mind.

The Missouri Department of Transportation recently announced that the Business Route 54 Bagnell Dam Bridge rehabilitation project at the Lake of the Ozarks will be taking longer than expected.

A Thanksgiving Tradition, The Great River Road Race Is Coming Up........

On Saturday, November 27, 2021, a Thanksgiving tradition, the Great River Road Race will be held.  The race is presented by the Alton Road Runners Club in Alton.  Last year's event was a virtual run due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Race Director Russ Colona says that the race revenues fund the Alton Runner's Kids Summer Running Series and the Runner of the Year Banquet.  This year marks the 62nd race........

Divers Recover 1,200 Year Old Canoe From Wisconsin Lake........

On Tuesday, maritime archaeologists, SCUBA divers and residents were braving the chilly temperatures at Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin as a canoe was brought ashore.  The canoe was no ordinary canoe, as it dated back over 1,200 years.

Tamara Thompson, a maritime archaeologist and the owner of Diversions SCUBA was recently on a dive with co-worker Mallory Dragt, when they spotted what appeared to be a log sticking out of the lake bed.  Further investigation revealed that the log was a dugout canoe.

According to Wisconsin state archaeologist Jim Skibo, carbon-14 dating tests revealed that the canoe was 1,200 years old, which makes it the oldest intact vessel found in Wisconsin........

MasterCraft Announced Record Setting First Quarter Of 2022........

MasterCraft Boat Holdings, Inc. recently released the financial results of the first quarter of fiscal 2022, which ended on October 3, 2021.  According to Fred Brightbill, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, the company performed very well despite a challenging and dynamic environment.

During the first quarter of fiscal 2022, MasterCraft Boat Holdings, Inc. posted net sales of $144.0 million, up from $40.3 million last year.  The increase was credited to increased volumes, higher prices, a favorable model mix and higher option sales.

Gross margins decreased from 25.3 percent to 20.9 percent.  The higher revenues generated a lower margin due to supply chain issues and inflationary pressures that pushed material and labor costs higher........
