1945 in River History The last ferry in St. Louis County closed.
The opening of the Jefferson Barracks Bridge made the Davis Street Ferry obsolete after 85 years of operations. Many roads once led to ferries, including those operated by Captain Edward Hall, Oliver Dougherty and Francois Lemais.

Mississippi River at Clarksville, Missouri Over 200 Eagles Counted.......
While Trolling The Internet.... We reeled in a photo gallery of some of the 200 plus bald eagles gathered along the Mississippi River at Clarksville, Missouri in Sunday. The photos show both mature and immature eagles doing some fishing around the Clarksville Lock and Dam area. Volunteers with Missouri Master Naturalists counted around 220 eagles in the area Sunday....

Illinois River Near Seneca, Illinois Judge Stands By Ruling In Barge Fleeting Case........
Grundy County Judge Sheldon Sobol remains firm in his ruling that it will take an act of the General Assembly to give the Illinois Department of Natural Resources authority over barge fleeting permits.
Illinois and Michigan Oil is looking to have up to 106 barges in an operation along the Illinois River east of Seneca. Rick and Gloria Sims own the property across the river from the proposed operation and filed suit to stop the process.
Judge Sobol says that the IDNR portion of the permitting process that the company went through was invalid because state law says that it is out of the IDNR's jurisdiction........

Illinois River Pollution Farmers Still Fighting Against Nutrient Runoff........
Illinois is one of 11 states within the Mississippi River Basin that has promised to develop strategies to reduce the amount of nutrients finding their ways into the Mississippi River system and ultimately, the Gulf of Mexico.
Illinois intended to reduce nitrates and nitrogen by 15 percent and phosphorous by 25 percent by 2025, however, it appears that the nutrient loss has increased by 13 percent and phosphorous losses increased by 35 percent when compared to a baseline period between 1980 and 1996.
The state has made significant headway on reducing nutrient discharges from wastewater treatment facilities, however, these reductions have not been seen in agriculture........

Ohio River Near Parkersburg, West Virginia Could The Coal Holler Pirate Treasure Be Lost Forever?
Until shortly after the end of the Civil War, large areas along the Ohio River Valley in what is now West Virginia were controlled by pirates. The region was sparsely settled, allowing the bandits in boats to easily hide in the river coves, occasionally raiding ships and nearby communities.
River piracy was already quite common along the Lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, and from around 1790 to 1834, Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, located about 80 miles upstream from the Ohio River's confluence with the Mississippi River, was home to several bands of pirates and outlaws.
One of the better known buried treasure stories claims that a treasure was reportedly buries in Coal Hollow, near Parkersburg, West Virginia. Reportedly, many treasure seekers have gone looking for it, however, the treasure has never been found. In the 1980s, the area was virtually obliterated by the construction of the U.S. 50 Expressway and it's exit and entrance ramps to DuPont Road........

Added Sunday Meramec River Near Arnold, Missouri Residents Concerned Development Near The River Will Cause Flooding........
Just north of Arnold, Missouri, along the Meramec River, a contractor has deposited tons of dirt in a scrubby clearing in what is proposed to be the beginning of a new sports complex.
The site of the project is almost completely within the Meramec River flood plain, and the river regularly flows into the adjacent fields and forests in the area, kissing the backyards and patios of nearby residents.
The development has residents concerned that the alteration to the flood plain will give the Meramec River the additional "push" upwards to begin inundating their homes........

While the bald eagles that typically winter in the Riverbend region start arriving in early January, there are those in the travel industry that say that eagle arrivals are going to pick up.
The bald eagles tend to follow food supplies, and with the arrival of colder temperatures in the area, the ice along the Mississippi River could prompt an increase in eagle sightings.
Cory Jobe, President and CEO of the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau says that there is an event this weekend at the Audubon Center at Riverlands in West Alton, Missouri, as well as the resumption of dam tours at the National Great Rivers Museum at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam........

Added Sunday Upper Mississippi River Basin Corps' Rock Island District Secured $1.2 Billion For Upper Mississippi River Projects........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that the Rock Island District will be receiving $1.2 billion in funding during Fiscal Year 2022 via an infrastructure Funding Law to complete projects and programs within the Upper Mississippi River Valley.
Colonel Jesse Curry, Commander of the Corps, Rock Island District says that the funds are considerably more than the District's annual budget has ever received.
The Rock Island District is poised to receive two priority construction new starts, one through the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program and new start funding for the Brandon Road Interbasin Project........

Mississippi River Training Structures Judge Approved Mississippi River Control Plan, Issues Warning To Attorneys..
Judge David Dugan of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois recently granted a summary judgment in favor of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in a lawsuit over Mississippi River training structures. The ruling also granted final approval to a Corps' plan for a 195 mile section of the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri to Cairo, Illinois.
The suit, National Wildlife Federation vs. United States Army Corps of Engineers was filed by attorneys representing the National Wildlife Federation, American Rivers, Prairie Rivers Network, Missouri Coalition for the Environment and Great Rivers Habitat Alliance and claimed that the Corps' use of river training structures degrades river habitat while increasing flood risks.
Judge Dugan also reprimanded the plaintiff's attorneys and threatened them with sanctions for misleading the court. Dugan claims they selectively cited, misquoted and misrepresented language in various acts and laws they claimed that the Corps violated. He also accused the attorneys of a lack of candor........

Mississippi River At Rock Island, Illinois Lock No.15 Drained For Inspection, Maintenance And Repairs........
Mississippi River Lock No.15 at Rock Island, Illinois has been completely drained for inspection, maintenance and repair work. It will remain empty until March 3, 2022. Crews will be inspecting the gates, lock walls and bubbler pipes to make sure all items are operating as intended.
Matt Thurman, Chief of Maintenance for the Corps' Rock Island District says that dewatering the lock is the only time they can visually see what is happening below the water line. The dewatering process occurs around every 30 years or so.
Crews will be inspecting the miter gates at each end of the lock as well as the concrete walls of the lock chamber for deterioration. Thurman says that bubbler pipes will be replaced since the lock chamber has been drained. The bubblers keep debris and ice away from the gates........

Tennessee River near Gilbertsville, Kentucky Kentucky Lock To Close For Three Weeks For Repairs........
Officials report that Kentucky Lock will be closed from January 31 through February 24 in order to make repairs stemming from a tow running into and damaging the upper miter gates in October.
Lockmaster Caleb Skinner says that when the tow was approaching the lock, they went too far downstream into the lock approach and made contact with both upstream miter gates. One of the gates was repaired during a scheduled closure from November 1 to December 10.
The project will include cutting out the damaged structural members of the miter gate leaf and skin plate, welding new metal in place and recoating the metal. Skinner says that it is crucial to get the repairs done before the spring rains arrive........

Boat Manufacturer Brunswick Released 4th Quarter Results........
Brunswick recently released the financial results for the fourth quarter as well as the fiscal year 2021. The report reveals strong growth and record sales across Brunswick's boat, propulsion and parts and accessories segments.
Brunswick reported net sales of $1.431 billion for the fourth quarter of 2021, an increase of 23.2 percent over the fourth quarter of 2020. Operating earnings were $121.8 million, up 7.3 percent on an adjusted basis compared with the fourth quarter of 2020.
For fiscal 2021, Brunswick posted $5.85 billion in net sales, a 34.5 percent increase over fiscal 2020. Operating earnings for 2021 ended up at $812.9 million, representing a 50.7 percent change compared to fiscal year 2020........

Boat Retailer MarineMax Posts Record First Quarter........
Boat retailer MarineMax has released the results of their first fiscal quarter of 2022, which ended on December 31, 2021. The company reports that revenues increased by 15 percent to a record $472,7 million, up from 411.5 million over the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021.
Net income rose 52 percent to $35.9 million, and earnings per diluted share increased by 53 percent to $1.59. an increase from $1.04 posted during the first quarter of fiscal 2021.
MarineMax attributes their growth to strategic acquisitions as well as strong same-store sales growth of 9 percent. The sales increase was driven by an increase in unit sales. The same-store sales increase was in addition to over 20 percent growth compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2021........

On Thursday, the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau held their Annual Tourism Summit at the Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville. Over 240 people attended the event, including elected officials, regional business leaders and community partners.
According to Cory Jobe, Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau President and CEO, the Riverbend is home to key tourism drivers that cannot be found anywhere else. It is home to the confluence of the Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri Rivers, the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway and Illinois Route 66.
Jobe says that focusing on a regional approach in the development of a regional destination is the key to creating a livable future for entrepreneurs, retirees and young families. He ads that tourism is an investment as opposed to an expense. Each dollar spent on destination marketing is getting a $9 return in economic spending........

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois Port District Funding Slated For Barge Dock Project........
Part of the $13.2 billion in state capitol funding awarded to the Mid-America Intermodal Authority Port District is being earmarked to raise the barge dock at Quincy. This project has been in the works for several years.
According to Charles Bell, executive director of Mid-America Intermodal Authority Port District, the next step is to meet with the Illinois Department of Transportation and engineering staff to determine the eligible uses of the funds as they relate to the project.
Bell added that they will also be raising some of the access roads to the dock so it wouldn't have nearly the number of closures it's had in the past. The project was initially estimated at $1.3 million, but that was increased to $2.2 million after the discovery of significant deterioration of the dock's sheet pilings........

Mississippi River Near Cape Girardeau, Missouri Low Water Along The Mississippi River Affect River Users........
Currently, the Mississippi River is experiencing low water levels, which has a major effect on both commercial and recreational river users. Under these conditions, it is more dangerous and costs more to be on the water.
Brandon Matty, owner of Matty and Son Marine says that if you haven't been on the river before, you should take someone that has with you. He explains that the river levels are so low that recreational boaters need to be aware of debris, rock dikes or anything that cam damage your boat..
Cape Girardeau Port Authority Executive Director Cary Harbison says that if the river levels continue to fall, it will become costly for shipping companies. He notes that barges will have to be loaded lighter, due to the draft of the barge. This will force an increase in price for the commodities being shipped........

Lake Of The Ozarks One Injured In Barge Explosion........
Thursday morning, a barge exploded in a ball of fire at the 7.5 Mile Marker the Gravois Arm of the Lake of the Ozarks, near Coconuts Bar & Grill. One person was injured in the incident.
The barge was being operated by an employee of Ozark Barge & Dock Service, according to Nina Gennetten, owner of the company. She notes that the driver happened to have stepped off the barge onto the dock when it exploded. The driver sustained some burns but escaped serious injuries.
After the explosion, the dock drifted to shore between two other docks and burned, but it didn't set the nearby structures on fire. The Gravois Fire Protection District and Rocky Mount Fire Protection District responded with fire boats........

Boat Manufacturer Marine Products Corp. Reports Strong Increases During The Fourth Quarter........
Marine Products Corporation, parent company of Chaparral and Robalo recently released their unedited results for the second quarter and fiscal year ending on December 31, 2021.
During the 4th quarter of 2021, Marine Products posted net sales of $76,537,00, a 7.6 percent increase compared to $71,110,000 during the 4th quarter of 2020. the net sales increase was due to a 21,1 percent increase in the average selling price per boat, partially offset by an 11.1 percent decrease in the number of boats sold.
Gross profit for the 4th quarter of 2021 was $19,158,000, an increase of 9.9 percent over the prior year's $17,431,000. Gross margin as a percentage of net sales increased to 25 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021 compared to 24.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020........

Mississippi River At Granite City, Illinois America's Central Port To Receive $21 Million In State Funding........
Wednesday morning, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced that the state has announced $108.3 million in funding for public ports in Illinois. Of that funding, America's Central Port in Granite City, Illinois is slated to receive $21 million in state funding for three projects.
America's Central Port will be receiving $13 million for sediment reduction in Madison Harbor and $5.5 million for the harbor's truck staging and calling center facilities. The port will receive $2,375,000 for the Hill Storage Track and other track improvements, as well as local funding in the amount of $125,000.
Governor Pritzker says that these funds follow up on the vision of Rebuild Illinois, which was approved three years ago. He adds that on Wednesday, they launched funding that will support Illinois ports and better than three dozen transit systems outside of Chicago........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Officials Seeking New Naming Sponsor For The Amphitheater........
On Tuesday, the Alton Amphitheater Commission announced that they are seeking proposals for naming rights for the facility, currently known as the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater. That naming agreement had expired in December.
The exclusive naming rights for the amphitheater will last for a minimum of three years, however, the amphitheater commission is encouraging longer term agreements.
Those interested in acquiring the naming rights must submit a revenue proposal quoting a minimum annual sum. Proposals are due by 3 pm on February 18, when a commission member will open all proposals. The commission will review the proposals and could possibly select a sponsor at it's February 21 meeting........

Mississippi River At LeClaire, Iowa Living Lands & Waters Supports Mississippi River Bison Bridge Project........
The river cleanup and environmental advocacy organization Living Lands & Waters is heading up the mission of converting an old interstate bridge into a unique park for bison crossing over the Mississippi River.
Chad Pregracke, founder and president of LL&W has had the dream of converting the Interstate 80 Bridge crossing the Mississippi RIver into an up-close viewing area for bison. The span is slated for demolition upon the completion of a replacement span.
Instead of demolishing the bridge, the proposed project would convert the westbound span into a land bridge crossing the river with approximately 100 acres of grazing land on each side for a small herd of bison. The eastbound lands would become a pedestrian viewing area........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri The Mississippi River At Cape Is Below Target Level........
As of Wednesday night, the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau, Missouri was at 9.37 feet, which is below the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' "target level" of between 11.5 and 12.2 feet for safe navigation.
The record high for the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau is 48 feet, set in 1993, while the record low was 0.60 feet, set in January of 1909. Flood stage at Cape Girardeau is 32 feet, and the downtown flood gates are closed when the river rises to 35.5 feet.
According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River rose to 9.28 feet on Wednesday, however, it is forecasted to fall to 6.9 feet by February 3........

Fishy Tales From Newport Beach, California Super Pod Of Dolphins "Stampede" Whale Watching Boat Off California Coast........
On Sunday, a super pod of dolphins swam alongside a whale watching boat off the coast of Newport Beach, California, enthralling passengers lucky enough to see the sight in person.
The "stampede", as the Newport Landing Whale Watching called it, was a long line of dolphins surging at the same time, extending off into the distance. The sight was something to behold, and the timing could not have been better, just prior to sunset at the coveted "golden hour".

Mississippi River At Clarksville, Missouri Corps Offering Free Dam Tours January 29, 30........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rivers Project Office has partnered up with the City of Clarksville to offer additional attractions to the town's annual Clarksville Eagle Days.
During the two day event, USACE Park Rangers will be offering free public tours of Lock and Dam No.24, which isn't usually open for public touring.
Lock Master Ryan Lee says that Corps of Engineers at Lock and Dam No.24 is excited to offer the public the opportunity to tour the dam. Visitors will be able to see the lock chamber where tows pass through and learn about the process........

Tombigbee River At Coffeeville, Alabama Sunken Recreational Vessel Removed From Coffeeville Lock........
At 6 pm Friday, January 14, the Coffeeville Lock, located at the 116.6 Mile Marker of the Tombigbee River reopened to navigation following the removal of a sunken 41 foot recreational vessel from the chamber.
On January 8, the vessel was traveling northbound along the Tombigbee River when it entered the Coffeeville Lock and sank during lockage. Officials promptly closed the lock to navigation due to draft concerns.
The vessel had settled upright in the lock chamber with only about 7 feet of clearance over the top of it.
On January 13, a salvage crew from Vicksburg, Mississippi based Big River Shipbuilders arrived in Coffeeville to recover the vessel. Thanks to their quick work, the lock was cleared by the following day........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois Barges Act As Ice Breakers This Time Of Year........
As the bottom has fallen out and the deep freeze settles into the Riverbend region, barges have begun acting as ice breakers along the Mississippi River.
On Monday, a tow loaded with liquified petroleum gas and coal could be seen breaking through the ice at Alton, Illinois prior to passing below the Clark Bridge en route to the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26.
There were three barge hands visible making their way to the front of the tow as it headed towards the locks. While the majority of the locking process is automated, the barge hands play a role in guiding the pilot .......

Missouri River Maintenance Funding Has Been Secured For Missouri River Projects........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District is slated to receive around $278 million in funding under the Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act for the Missouri River works and nearby lakes.
The Corps reports that approximately $249 million of the funding is intended for repairing damages caused by the 2019 flood to the Bank Stabilization and Navigation Project along the Missouri River from Rulo, Nebraska to St. Louis, Missouri.
Several lakes in the Heartland will be receiving funding for repairing rock embankments, shoreline stabilization and other projects........

Mississippi River Near Baton Rouge, Louisiana LSU Scientist Works To Reduce Plastic Pollution In The River.......
Back in September, researchers from the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative found that the the amount of trash detected along the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge during a month-long survey would add up to about 61 pieces or trash.
Mark Benfield, a professor with the LSU College of Coast and Environment has teamed with the MRCTI to study the flow of plastic waste down the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico.
Researchers are gathering information using GPS trackers, trash accumulation data and water testing for microplastics, which are tiny pieces of plastic ranging in size from microscopic to the size of a grain of rice........

U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers, Rock Island District Corps Rock Island District Receiving $1.2 Billion For Upper Mississippi River Valley........
Recent legislation has allocated $1.2 billion in funding to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, which will allow them to carry out projects and programs within the Upper Mississippi River Valley.
Colonel Jesse Curry, Commander of the Corps' Rock Island District says that the amount of funding has surpassed any amount the District's budget has ever seen.
Rock Island is slated to receive two priority construction new starts, one via the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program as well as new start funding for the Brandon Road Interbasin Project........

Missouri River Near Jefferson City, Missouri Callaway County May Become Home To A New Port........
In February, the first possible tenants of a proposed Missouri River port in Jefferson City will meet in the Capitol City to brief state legislators on the company's plans for a container port facility in the state.
During Thursday's Heartland Port Authority meeting, Vice Chairman Roger Fischer suggested including American Patriot Holdings to discuss their plans and how they might fit with te plans of the port authority.
Late last year, APH announced that a 300 acre stretch of land in Herculaneum, Missouri would become the home of their new container port facility.
Heartland board member Jason Branstatter recommended that the board should discuss with APH what their needs would be for a Central Missouri Port.......

Missouri Flooding Response Mo. Governor Looks To Improve State's Response To Floods, Drought........
The flooding that occurred along the Missouri and Mississippi River Basins in 2019 caused an estimated $20 billion in damages.
In order to better predict and monitor flooding and drought conditions across the state, Missouri Governor Mike Parson is calling for legislators to allocate $10.4 million to create an agency to address these events.
On Wednesday, budget documents were released that show Parson's request for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to create the Missouri Hydrology Information Center. This agency could help improve Missouri's preparation and response to water-related events........

Mississippi River At Davenport, Iowa A Mute Swan Frozen To The Mississippi River Was Rescued........
Early last week, Phyllis Walker and her fiance were taking a drive to get out of the house and watch birds along the Mississippi River when they spotted a white swan swimming in the river.
After observing the swan over the span of a few days, they found that the swan was staying stationary. The couple got worried when they saw the bird was still there on Thursday.
The couple grabbed a blanket, a hammer and a screwdriver to attempt to free the swan, who's chest was frozen to the water, but his feet were moving.
They called 911, but responders were unable to help. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources was busy, and would not be able to respond for some time.
Walker's fiance took maters into his own hands and freed the swan. Conservation officers arrived shortly thereafter and took the swan to a wildlife rehab and sanctuary........

Ferry News From Staten Island, New York SNL Stars Pete Davidson and Colin Jost Purchase Retired Staten Island Ferry Boat........
Saturday Night Live stars Pete Davidson and Colin Jost recently purchased the retired Staten Island Ferry boat, the John F. Kennedy with the intention of converting it into an entertainment venue.
The vessel had shuttled commuters between Staten Island and Manhattan from 1965 until ir was decommissioned in August of 2021.
The comedy duo purchased the 277 foot vessel at auction with a winning bid of $280,000. The transformation of the ferry into a club or entertainment venue will cost millions of dollars and won't happen any time soon........

Boating Safety MSHP To Offer Boater Safety Courses........
Colonel Eric T. Olsen, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol recently announced that the MSHP will be offering boating safety courses to inform and motivate boaters to prepare for the boating season.
Colonel Olsen says that there are plenty of boating opportunities on Missouri's lakes and rivers, and boaters should take a boating safety class. These approved safety courses meet the national boating educational standards.
The State of Missouri requires all boaters born after January 1, 1984 that operate a vessel on Missouri waterways must possess a certified boating safety education card........

Officials are inviting eagle lovers and nature buffs of all ages to head up to Clarksville, Missouri on Saturday, January 29 and Sunday, January 30 for the annual Clarksville Eagle Days celebration.
Scores of visitors are expected to turn out for the event, where bald eagles will be visible swooping down to catch a meal in the Mississippi RIver near Lock and Dam No.24.
The historic Apple Shed will host a variety of vendors selling handcrafted intes, food and more. Dickerson Park Zoo of Springfield, Missouri will be conducting Live Eagle Shows in the Apple Shed on the hour from 10 am to 4 pm Saturday and from 11 am to 3 pm Sunday........

Historic Warships First Woman Taking Command Of The USS Constitution........
History was recently made aboard the U.S.S. Constitution, as Paducah, Kentucky native Commander Billie J. Farrell was named commanding officer of the 224 year old warship.
Also known as Old Ironsides, the Constitution is based in Boston's Charlestown Navy Yard and is the world's oldest commissioned warship afloat. She played a crucial role in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812.
Commander Farrell is the 77th commanding officer of the Constitution. The vessel is crewed by active-duty sailors, about a third of whom are women........

River Shipping News RocketShip Pilots Train On New Simulator........
The R/S RocketShip from United Launch Alliance transports Atlas V and Delta IV Heavy boosters, second stages and payload fairings for the Aerospace industry. After some deck upgrades, the vessel will also carry the new Vulcan Centaur rockets.
The vessel travels from ULA's Decatur, Alabama facility to either Cape Canaveral, Florida or to the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
Crews hold unlimited tonnage ocean licenses, but on their Florida trips, the majority of the journey is along the Tennessee, Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. This has prompted ULA to contract with Seamen's Church Institute for 2 1/2 days of advanced pilothouse management training.
About half of the training, which took place January 19 - 21, was in the classroom, with the remainder spent on the simulators at SCI's Center for Maritime Education in Paducah, Kentucky........

The Great Lakes New Legislation Provides Funding For Great Lakes Infrastructure Projects........
On Thursday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stated that they would be investing $479 million for the construction of a new navigational lock at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
The project will involve expanding an existing complex that assists vessels in hauling bulk cargo between Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes.
The Corps also announced that they were investing $226 million in the Brandon Road Lock and Dam . The project involves installing barriers prevent the invasive Asian carp from migrating from the Illinois River into the Great Lakes........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois Efforts Continue On Expanding Grafton Ferry Service........
It appears that the process of shifting the Grafton Ferry to a year-round schedule from the current weekends-only schedule is moving forward.
Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow recently met with stakeholders and made plans for acquiring a statewide planning grant to proceeding with the expanded schedule.
Morrow added that Port District Chairman Dennis Wilmsmeyer will write the grant and pay for the match, meaning that it won't cost anything other than the time to put it together........

While Trolling The Internet.... We reeled in a photo gallery showing the history of the MacArthur Bridge. Originally known as the Municipal Bridge, it officially opened to the public on January 20, 1917. The bridge's railroad deck wasn't dedicated until January 15, 1940....

More Mississippi River History A Look Back At The Rise And Fall Of Mississippi River Icebreakers........
These days, the closure of the Upper Mississippi River because of icing is little more than a minor inconvenience, however, this wasn't always the case.
Prior to the advent of the railroads, river ice meant that towns along the Upper Mississippi River were isolated until steamboat traffic could resume.
During the 1930s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began using icebreakers to extend river traffic.
After the U.S. entry into World War II, the river and icebreakers were pulling extra duty, with oil cargoes being amongst the main cargo headed south to the Gulf refineries.
Icebreaking operations were not economically viable, and have been for the most part abandoned........
