This coming weekend, the St. Charles Convention Center will be hosting the Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Association's St. Charles Boat Show for 2022.
The St. Charles Boat Show is the premiere show for boating enthusiasts from the St. Louis Market, as well as all across the Midwest. Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for kids 6-12 and free for kids 5 and under.
The St. Charles Boat Show will run from:

Illinois River At Peoria, Illinois Responders Rescue Dogs Stranded On An Ice Shelf........
Firefighters were called out the Illinois River at Peoria, Illinois on Sunday to respond to reports of two dogs stranded on an ice shelf approximately 200 feet from the shore. Assisting the Firefighters were a Peoria Policeman and an employee of PAWS.
According to the PAWS representative, several attempts had been made to try and get the dogs to come ashore. One of the dogs had fallen through the ice, but managed to get itself back onto the ice shelf.
The Peoria Fire Department used an inflatable boat manned by two Firefighters in ice rescue suits. they were able to get one of the dogs onto the inflatable boat, while the second dog ran off. It eventually made it back to shore, where it fell back into the water. but was able to make it back onto dry ground........

Ohio River History Corps Looking For Assistance On Ohio L&D 52, 53 History........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District is looking for people that lived or worked near the former Ohio River Lock and Dams No.52 or No.53 in southern Illinois, as they are compiling a history book.
The Corps has put out a call for stories, photos and other historic information about the dams from not only the people that worked at the sites, but those that lived in the area and have stories about the dam's construction and operation.
The Corps' Louisville District is putting together a history book that will pay tribute to the projects, people and stories of the Lower Ohio River. The Corps has been working on this project in May 2021 and have already outlined the first chapter........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana Coast Guard Searched The River After Mistaken Man Overboard Report........
On Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard searched the Mississippi River and a cruise ship briefly turned around following a mistaken report of a man going overboard.
Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard report that they received a report of a man having heart attack symptoms. The report led to the mistaken belief that they were searching for an overboard passenger.
The Coast Guard sent out rescue assets including a helicopter were dispatched and searching until the miscommunication was realized. Just over a week prior, a woman fell or jumped from a cruise ship, so the search was set up before eventually being suspended........

Getting ready for the Grafton Mardi Gras Parade at Drifters !
No pictures of the Parade because Mary and I were in it. It was sort of small but lots of fun, starting out at Drifters Eats and Drinks working it's way down the sidewalk to the Hawg Pit. The parade goers where making noise with pots and pans, the music was playing and cars were honking as they passed by. What a blast.

Added Sunday Mississippi River Flood Outlook (Lock & Dam 15) Upper Mississippi River Basin Snowfall Increases Chances OF Spring Flooding........
The heavy snowfall that has accumulated over the past few weeks near the headwaters of the Mississippi River has prompted an increase in the likelihood of spring flooding in the Quad-City region. The National Weather Service, Davenport issued the revised outlook on Thursday.
On Friday, meteorologist Mike McClure with the National Weather Service, Davenport said that the difference between the first and second spring flooding forecasts is the heavy snowfall over the past several weeks near the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
McClure adds that while the chances for spring flooding has increased, the odds of spring flooding are not very high. Currently, there is a 69 percent chance of flooding at Lock and Dam No.15 at Rock Island, Illinois. Typically, the chances of flooding are 50 percent at this time of year........

Added Sunday Missouri River At Washington, Missouri Washington Seeking Grant For Riverfront Trail........
On Tuesday, the Washington City Council voted to proceed with seeking a grant from the federal government with the hopes of reworking portions of the Rotary Riverfront Trail.
City officials say that the project would include rerouting sections of the Riverfront trail through the James A Rennick Riverfront Park. This will create a designated crossing area for people walking from one half of the trail to the other.
Work would also involve adding a retaining wall to sections of the trail near the flag plaza, installing a new staircase from the lower parking lot and removing the existing staircase and making upgrades to the parking lot and restroom facilities........

Added Sunday New Information Mississippi River Near Dorena, Missouri The Dorena-Hickman Ferry To Remain Closed Longer........
A little over a week ago, the Dorena-Hickman Ferry was shut down because of high water along the Mississippi River. Rising floodwaters had covered the Hickman landing, forcing the ferry to halt service.
The Dorena-Hickman typically closes when the Cairo River Gauge reaches about 44 feet. As of February 16th, the gauge was reading 43.66 feet and is expected to stay above that level until around March 9th.
The Dorena-Hickman Ferry runs across the Mississippi River, linking Missouri Route A and Route 77 near Dorena, Missouri and KY 1354 at Hickman, Kentucky........

Mississippi River Near Fort Jefferson, Kentucky Benton, Missouri Photographer's Photo To Become A USPS Stamp........
About 50 years ago, Larry Brown discovered his passion for photography after he bought a camera while he was serving aboard the USS Midway in the U.S. Navy. Now a resident of Benton, Missouri, Braun's photo of the Mississippi River will be featured on a U.S. Postal Service postage stamp, as part of their Mighty Mississippi collection.
The photo that was selected to be featured on one of the USPS' stamps was taken at Fort Jefferson, Kentucky. Braun says that Fort Jefferson has a great view of the Mississippi River, and he arrived right at sunset. He says that he believes that the sunset is what sold him the image.
Braun states that he was contacted by a USPS graphic card company and advised that the organization would be producing a series of stamps based upon the Mississippi River. He agreed to allow his work to be used for one of the stamps in the series........

Mississippi River Near Burlington, Iowa "Forever chemicals" Present In Mississippi River Drinking Water........
According to test results released this week by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the drinking water drawn from the Mississippi River by three Iowa cities contains toxic chemicals that remain in the environment indefinitely.
Burlington, Davenport and Keokuk drinking water that serves some 183,000 residents contains trace amounts of perfluroalkyl and polyfluroalkyl substances, which are commonly referred as so as PFAS or "forever chemicals".
The tests show combined concentrations of two common PFAS, perflurooctanoic acid, (PFOA) and perflorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) in the amount of fewer than 10 parts per trillion, which is well below safety standards........

Boat Manufacturer Bentley Pontoons Announced Facility Expansion........
While demand for new boats continues to be high, South Carolina-based Bentley Pontoons recently announced a $5.9 million investment in their production facilities. The expansion is expected to create 50 new jobs.
Bentley President Ryan Marcott says that they are thrilled to be expanding their South Carolina facility and they are especially appreciate the support form the South Carolina Department of Commerce and the Lexington County Department of Economic Development.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster says that the state's boating industry has a huge effect on the state's economy. He adds that Bentley's announcement, and others like it, will serve to grow the economy.........

Ohio River At Cave-In-Rock, Illinois Rising Floodwaters Prompt Closure Of The Cave-In-Rock Ferry........
The Cave-In-Rock Ferry has been temporarily closed because of the rising Ohio River. Even as the floodwaters began covering KY 91 near the 15 mile marker, the ferry made it's final run from the Kentucky landing at around 6 pm.
The Ohio River at Shawneetown was at 40.7 feet when the ferry was closed. Based upon the current flooding forecasts, the Cave-In-Rock ferry is expected remain closed until sometime after March 8th.
Usually, the ferry is closed at 41 feet, but a number of mitigating factors could make it vary by about a foot. If there is any substantial rainfall, the closure may be extended........

Ohio River At Brookport, Illinois The U.S. 45 Ohio River "Brookport" Bridge Has Reopened........
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports that the U.S. 45 Ohio River "Brookport" Bridge spanning the Ohio River between Brookport, Illinois and Paducah, Kentucky has reopened.
The Brookport Bridge has been closed since 4:40 Wednesday because of icing on the metal road deck. The span was reopened to traffic just after 12:30 Friday afternoon.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says that the rainfall during the overnight hours was above freezing, which helped warm the metal decking and melt the ice away........

Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau, Missouri City Hosted Open House About Proposed Marina........
Cape Girardeau officials and engineers from Klingner & Associates recently held an open house at Cape Girardeau City Hall to discuss the feasibility of a marina in Cape Girardeau.
Last December, the Cape Girardeau City Council approved a contract with Quincy, Illinois-based Klingner & Associates to conduct a feasibility study of a marina within the city limits.
The study was intended to determine whether the city could sustain a marina. THe proposed marina would cater to smaller transient vessels and have multiple docking facilities........

Meramec River Near Pacific, Missouri City Receiving 40 Acres For New Meramec River Trail.......
The city of Pacific, Missouri will most likely be getting a new trail system along the Meramec River, thanks to a donation from the Great Rivers Greenway District.
THe Great Rivers Greenway is a governmental agency established in 2000 by St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County voters with the intention of making the region more vibrant through a network of greenways along the region's rivers.
The Great Rivers Greenway is donating 42 acres of property fronting the Meramec River between the Brush Creek entrance and Highway F with the intention of building a trail. At this time, the trail has yet to be designed........

Cape Girardeau may become the latest town along the Mississippi River to put in a marina, and on Thursday, city officials are hosting a public meeting to get the public's input.
Cape Girardeau City Council Member Ward 1 Dan Presson says that it is important for the city to hear and address the concerns and ideas of the citizens. They are especially interested in the input of residents near the proposed development.
Presson adds that a marina would affect the community in visitors and economically. He said that the marina would affect Cape Girardeau in general as a community by adding recreational opportunities, which helps develop the town into a destination........

Mississippi River At Cairo, Illinois Annual I-57 Bridge Inspection Coming Up Prompting Lane Closures........
Next month, bridge inspection efforts will prompt a partial closure of Interstate 57 near Cairo, Illinois. The Illinois Department of Transportation states that crews will be conducting the annual inspection of the bridge that carries I-57 over the Mississippi River.
The lane closures are slated to run from March 7 - 11 on the southbound lanes of I-57 and March 14 - 18 on the Northbound I-57 lanes. The lane closures and inspections will be carries out from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm each day.
Emergency vehicles will be allowed through the work site as quickly as possible........

Robert Hopkins, director of operations, Riverboats at the Gateway Arch recently announced that they would be offering some special cruises for some of St. Louis' most beloved holidays, Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day.
Hopkins is urging the public to hop aboard the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch for the Mardi Gras Recovery Brunch Cruise, the Fat Tuesday Party Cruise and the St. Patrick's Day Recovery Brunch Cruise.
Hopkins adds that St. Louis takes Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day very seriously, so what better way to celebrate these holidays than with a lively themed excursions along the Mississippi River........

Flood Insurance FEMA Urging Kentucky Residents To Purchase Flood Insurance........
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is calling on Kentucky residents to consider purchasing flood insurance because of the growing threat of flooding each year.
FEMA reports that flooding is the most common and most costly natural disasters. As the weather patters change, all areas are susceptible to flooding, and when that occurs, the damage is not typically covered in homeowner's insurance policies.
Most Kentuckians don't believe that they need to purchase flooding insurance as they do not live in a high-risk flood zone. FEMA notes that more than one fourth of the claims filed with their National Flood Insurance Program are filed by residents outside of high risk areas........

Mississippi River In The Riverbend Flooding Chances Are Low This Spring........
Officials are forecasting limited chances of flooding along the Mississippi River in the St. Louis region this spring. The National Weather Service says that there is no flooding within the St. Louis Service Area.
The Spring Flood and Water Resources Outlook states that there is near to below normal flooding chances along the Mississippi River, as well as it's tributaries, and well below normal flood chances along the Missouri River.
This outlook spans the Mississippi River from Canton, Missouri to above Cape Girardeau, the Illinois River from Beardstown to Grafton, and the Missouri River from above Jefferson City, Missouri and it's confluence with the Mississippi River at St. Louis........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Corps Celebrated Their 150th Anniversary........
On Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District Commander Colonel Kevin R. Golinghorst was joined by Alton Mayor David Goins and Grafton Mayor Michael R. Morrow in signing proclamations celebrating the Corps' 150th anniversary of managing the region's rivers.
The short event was held at the National Great Rivers Museum adjacent to the Melvin Price Locks and Dam 26 at Alton, Illinois.
The St. Louis District was established on February 19, 1872, and manages navigation along 300 miles of the Mississippi River as well as operations and management of 495 miles of Illinois levees.........

Boating Legislation American Boating Congress Registration Open........
Registration for the 2022 American Boating Congress is now underway for all industry stakeholders. The marine industry's annual advocacy event will be returning to an in-person format in Washington D.C. from Wednesday, May 11 through Friday, May 13, 2022.
This year's advocacy event will feature discussions with congressional and administration officials, timely political and policy updates, networking opportunities, evening receptions and much more. Early-bird pricing is available through February 24th.
At this time, access to congressional office buildings is limited, but as a result, visits to Capitol Hill are not guaranteed for this year's ABC 2022. The National Marine Manufactures Association will be monitoring the situation and will schedule meetings on the Hill as able........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri The Case For A Marina At St. Louis........
Mystery novelist and traveler Dean Klinkenberg recently penned an essay entitled St. Louis Deserves A Marina in which he points out that there are 21 marinas along the Mississippi River from St. Charles County to Alton, Illinois, but nary a one at St. Louis.
Klinkenberg believes that this is a mistake, noting that the city is potentially missing out on recreational boaters and has wrongly ceded river access to the marine industry.
As a longtime river enthusiast, Klinkenberg knows many people will be skeptical , however, they fail to take into account the no-frills type of marina that can change with water conditions. He adds that the marina in Kimmswick is a prime example of what to shoot for........

Missouri River Infrastructure Funding Will Benefit The Missouri River Valley........
The Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act has allotted some $278 million to the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District. Nearly $248 million of these funds are set to repair damages caused by the flooding of 2019.
Dane Morris with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers program manager for navigation restoration says that approximately 5,000 river training structures are located in the Missouri RIver between Rulo, Nebraska and St. Louis, Missouri. He added that the majority of those were damaged in the Flood of 2019.
There are many lakes in the region that will be receiving funds for repairs, enhancing wetlands, structures, roads, parks and campgrounds, wildlife habitat and cultural resources........

Ohio River Near Cairo, Illinois U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge Closed, Reopened After Barge Strike.........
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports that on Friday morning, the U.S. 51 Ohio River "Cairo" Bridge was closed briefly after a barge struck one of the bridge's piers.
The U.S. Coast Guard reports that shortly before 3:45 am Friday morning, the tow vessel G.W. Frayser was traveling along the Ohio RIver when it attempted to head upstream along the Mississippi River. The tow struck one of the right descending piers of the bridge.
An inspector was called out to the scene to conduct a safety check. The inspector and other officials walked the bridge to check for possible damage. The span was deemed safe and reopened just before 6 am........

The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.
