Added Sunday Missouri River At Jefferson City, Missouri Two Rescued From The Missouri River........
Jefferson City Firefighters report that on Wednesday, two people were rescued from the Missouri River at the Noren Access Point. The two people were in a tandem kayak prior to needing assistance.
Fire crews dispatched one rescue boat with four responders aboard for the rescue effort. One paddler was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A friend of the kayakers states that the pair were training for a race.
The Jefferson City Fire Department responders were assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Jefferson City Police Department, Callaway County EMS and Cole County EMS........

Lake Race is coming back to the Lake of the Ozarks, and the Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance is offering volunteer boat captains the chance to see the racing action up close.
Lake Race is one of the biggest boat races on the Lake and the action starts on Saturday, June 4. In order to keep the race safe and fun, patrol assistance is needed to ensure that boaters don't get too close to the racers. The benefit is that volunteers get a prime spot to watch the race.

Cahokia Creek Near Edwardsville, Illinois Illinois AG Files Suit Against Pipeline Operator........
Illinois' Attorney General Kwame Raoul has filed a lawsuit against Marathon Pipe Line LLC, the operator of the pipeline that released at least 163,000 gallons of crude oil into and around a creek near Edwardsville, Illinois last week.
The suit, filed on Friday, alleges that the oil spill "created a substantial danger to the environment and public health and welfare". The oil spill was reported on March 11 and created an odor and a release of crude oil into Cahokia Creek .
The suit calls on Marathon to develop final and permanent abatement" and seeks penalties of $50,000 for each violation of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act in addition to fines of $10,000 for each day of violation........

Chicago River At Chicago, Illinois When Did The Tradition Of Dying The Chicago River Green Begin?
St. Patrick's Day has come and gone, and this year marked the 60th anniversary of the City of Chicago dying the Chicago River green as part of their St. Patrick's Day celebration. But what was the origin of this tradition?
Green dye was originally part of Chicago's efforts to clean up the city's riverfront, which had long been the depository of Chicago's waste. In 1955, Mayor Richard J. Daley tasked city workers to find where the sewage originated from, so, they used green dye to identify the source.
Daley had originally suggested dyeing part of Lake Michigan green to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. His friend Stephen M. Bailey, the business manager of the Chicago Plumbers Union, persuaded Daley to dye the Chicago River instead........

Mississippi River Cruising Heaviest River Cruise Ship Launched........
While Trolling The Internet.... We reeled in a video showing the launch of American Cruise Lines' latest cruise ship for the Mississippi River, the American Symphony at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland.
According to the shipbuilder, this was the heaviest ship that the company had ever launched into Maryland's Wicomico River. Even though the launch occurred at an early hour, a small group turned out to watch the event.
Steve McGee, President of the Chesapeake Shipbuilding says that they had to take advantage of an opportunity to launch the vessel. The 1,300 ton hull measures 269 feet in length and a beam of 59 feet........

In an another attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Boat Parade, the Lake of the Ozarks Boat Parade will be returning on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 11 am.
The parade held last year garnered plenty of attention and boaters, with more than 600 participants from several states that came to the Lake to attempt to break the record and make history.
Lagina Fitzpatrick, executive director of the Tri-County Lodging Association says that they drew in participants from outside the region who brought their boat down to participate in the parade. Fitzpatrick added that they had over nine different states represented........

Prior to the pandemic, a survey was conducted by the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas that revealed that over 85 percent of boat dealers indicated that they had multiple positions in their businesses available due to workforce shortages.

Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

Mississippi River At West Alton, Missouri Crews Pour First Section Of Elevated U.S. 67 Lanes........
On Thursday, around a dozen concrete mixer trucks were pouring their loads on what will become the raised southbound lanes of U.S. 67 in West Alton, Missouri. While a machine forms the main portion of the traffic lane, workers must finish the job by hand.
The nearly $4 million project will elevate the southbound lanes of U.S. 67 for approximately 3 miles after it crosses the Clark Bridge from Alton, Illinois into Missouri. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The elevated lanes will eliminate issues with minor to moderate flooding, however, it will not prevent large scale flooding from covering the lanes. The new lanes are going in adjacent to the already significantly higher northbound lanes........

Cahokia Creek Near Edwardsville, Illinois Madison County Has Some Involvement In Spill Cleanup........
Officials in Madison County, Illinois are keeping tabs on the cleanup efforts surrounding last week's oil pipeline spill which spewed hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil into the surrounding area, including Cahokia Creek.
According to Kurt Prenzler, the County board chair, the Madison County EMA director will remain in contact with the Environmental protection Agency representatives at the state and federal levels.
Marathon Pipe Line is reporting that as of Wednesday, close to 2,440 cubic yards of oily soil has been removed for decontamination and disposal. The recovery of the oil/water mixture from the Cahokia Diversion Canal continues........

Boater Education Water Sports Foundation Reports Spike In Online Education........
The Water Sports Foundation has reported a considerable increase in the number of people enrolling in boater education courses across the nation, marked by new online delivery trends.
The WSF is the non-profit educational arm of the Water Sports Industry Association and they attribute the increase to record-setting increases in recreational boating activity and a 35 percent in crease in first time boat ownership in 2020.
WSF executive director Jim Emmons says that they are pleased to report that the demand for boater education is on the rise. Dave Fuller, education director for the U.S> Coast Guard Auxiliary's Recreational Boating Safety Programs says that the pandemic prompted quick action on alternative methods for teaching boating safety when the classroom courses were unavailable........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana Despite Rising River Levels, Corps Not Expecting To Open Spillway........
The water level along the Lower Mississippi River is on the rise. It is currently about four feet below flood stage in New Orleans, however, it is high enough to leak through the wooden wickets at the Bonnet Carre Spillway about 30 miles upstream of the city.
Ricky Boyette, spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that each year, with the start of the rainy season in addition to the snowmelt from the north, all that water comes down the Mississippi River. He adds that the current forecast is that the river levels will be falling this month, but that does not factor in additional rainfall.
At this time, the Corps does not expect to open the Bonnet Carre Spillway. The Mississippi RIver is forecasted to crest Saturday and remain at 13.2 feet at the Carrolton Gage for at least 5 days before starting to fall........

Cahokia Creek Near Edwardsville, Illinois Treehouse Wildlife Group Working To Save Animals Affected By Oil Spill........
Crews are still working to clean up the site of a major oil spill in Edwardsville, Illinois that released over 160,000 gallons of oil into Cahokia Creek, which eventually flows into the Mississippi River.
There is also a focus on rescuing wildlife and getting them healthy once again. Several animals have died, however, many others are undergoing treatment right now.
The Treehouse Wildlife group is working to save animals injured by the spill. Responders are monitoring the air quality in the area, and so far, are not seeing any dangerous signs. The ruptured pipeline has been repaired........

FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
Edwardsville, IL. – Following reports of a 165,000 gallon crude
oil spill affecting Cahokia Creek, the Illinois Environmental
Protection Agency (IEPA) has referred an enforcement action

The Barefoot Restaurant... Update Illinois River at Hardin, IL.....
In 2021, Brian Matthews and sister, Kelly Sievers, along with their families bought the Barefoot name and recipes and will be re-opening in new building at a new location at the Hardin riverfront, 106 South Water Street, Hardin, IL.
Renovations have included adding an addition to the existing building. We will have indoor and outdoor seating. While dining inside, customers will enjoy the panoramic view of the Illinois River. From the outdoor patio, customers will have a more up-close experience with the beautiful riverfront.
We are working with the village of Hardin and Corps of Engineers to install a dock. There are plans to have docks up and down the riverfront.
We will still have the Barefoot menu and recipes that everyone loved with a few new additions including from scratch pies and desserts.
At this time, we haven’t nailed down the opening day details so stay tuned!

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri A Look Back At The River Levels, Old Boats In The Winter Of 1937........
A photograph taken on December 12, 1937 showed the icy St. Louis levee with Mississippi River levels reported to be at the lowest levels since the U.S. Weather Bureau began recording river stages in 1861. The Mississippi River was at minus 5 feet, some 10.6 feet lower than normal.
The Mississippi River was low enough that the end of the cobblestones along the wharf was visible. Even lower river levels were recorded in 1940, 1963 and 1989.
Also visible in the photograph are the Eads Bridge, Captain J.W. Menke's Goldenrod Showboat, the towboat Wenonah, formerly the Little Clyde, and the towboat Gold Shield........

Cedarville, Micaghan Tiara Yachts Donated $75,000 To Great Lakes Boat Building School........
Tiara Yachts recently made a $75,000 donation to the Great Lakes Boat Building School in support of incoming students and the Come Aboard, Launch Careers capital campaign, which will increase the school's capacity for educating the next generation of maritime professionals.
Thomas Slikkers, President/CEO S2 Yachts, Inc. stated that Tiara is not an assembly plant. He adds that they strongly believe in what the company is doing by translating their passion into constructing individual boats.
Slikkers says that they see that same passion being developed in the Great Lakes Boat Building School students, which is why thye decided to make the donation........

Bridge Inspections Mississippi River Near Cairo, Illinois U.S. 60/62 Bridge Will Be Shut Down For Inspections........
Officials with the Illinois Department of Transportation have announced that the U.S. 60/62 bridge spanning the Mississippi River At Cairo, Illinois will be closed to all traffic during two intervals in March and April for the annual required safety inspection.
IDOT says that the first closure will begin at 8 am on March 28, and will run through 12 pm on Thursday, March 31. The second closure will start at 8 am on Monday, April 4 and run through 12 pm on Thursday, April 7. THe bridge will reopen to all traffic from 5 pm to 8 am each night.
The U.S. 60/62 Bridge is located near Cairo, Illinois and it links Cairo in Alexander County with southeastern Missouri in Mississippi County........

Cahokia Creek Near Edwardsville, Illinois Update: Crude Oil Spill Cleanup Continues........
At around 1:30 pm Monday afternoon, Marathon Pipe Line officials reported that crews were still working to remove crude oil from the Cahokia Diversion Channel.
Absorbent boom remains in place at multiple locations along Cahokia Creek to keep the spilled crude oil contained. Boats were deployed within the channel to help recover oil from the water.
As of 10 pm Monday evening, MPL stated that nearly 250,000 gallons of a oil and water mixture have been recovered from the diversion channel following Friday's break of a 22 inch pipeline........

Mississippi River Near Grafton, Illinois New Project Could Help Protect Grafton From Major Flooding........
The Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative has teamed up with Ducks Unlimited to create what believe will be a solution to some of the flooding issues encountered in the Riverbend region.
The Two Rivers Project with Ducks Unlimited will be tasked with creating natural flood storage area in the confluence area of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.
Crews are already working on the project that will give the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers a natural area to flood before inundating the downtown centers of Grafton, Alton, West Alton and others........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri Riverboats Are Returning This Spring........
Spring is just around the corner, and coming with it will be the riverboats bringing visitors to the Cape Girardeau, Missouri riverfront. According to VisitCape, the first riverboat of the season will be the American Countess which is slated to dock downtown on Friday, April 22 at 12 pm.
The riverboats stopping in at Cape Girardeau will include the American Heritage, the American Splendor, the American Melody, the American Symphony, the American Queen, the American Duchess and the American Countess.
VisitCape also reports that due to security concerns, there will be no public tours of the riverboats available. VisitCape has listed a schedule of riverboat arrivals, but has noted that the dates and times are likely to change.........

The Grafton Ferry is opening for the season on April 22, 2022 !
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

The estimate of the Madison County crude oil release on Friday, March 11, 2022, in a crude oil spill from a pipeline, which impacted Cahokia Creek, is 3,000 barrels or 165,000 gallons.

Mississippi River Flood Outlook (For Iowa & Illinois) Spring Flood Risk Decreases, Drought Conditions Worsen........
On Thursday, the National Weather Service of the Quad Cities released their third and final spring flood outlook, which says that the chances of flooding along the Mississippi River in northwest Illinois and eastern Iowa has decreased slightly.
The latest outlook is showing near-normal flood risk for the Mississippi River and near to slightly below normal spring flooding risks for the local tributaries. The forecast has changed only slightly from the National Weather Service's last outlook released in late February.
According to meteorologist Alex Gibbs of the National Weather Service in Davenport, the main driver of any flooding this year will be the rate of snow melt from the Upper Mississippi River Basin as well as any future rainfall events........

Mississippi River Cities & Towns Initiative MRCTI To Assist With Acquiring Infrastructure Funding........
The Mississippi River Cities & Towns Initiative recently announced that they were beginning a major program to assist it's member cities navigate the process of accessing infrastructure funding from the recently passed Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
The MRCTI is a coalition of cities along the Mississippi River Corridor, and they are offering dues-paying member cities access to a consulting service that assists in preparing grant applications, gathering data and documentation and navigating though the grant application process.
The funding from the IIJA will be doled out over the next five years in five separate funding cycles. Some of the funding will be made available through federal agencies, while other will be given to states that have their own competitive grant programs........

The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water Grassroots Grant Program is accepting applications from local organizations and groups interested in keeping the water clean or improving boater safety.
The grant program provides local groups with up to $10,000 each to educate boaters on safe and clean boating topics. THere is no deadline to apply, as the application process allows applicants to apply at any time during the year.
In order to apply, a group must submit a short letter of intent that outlines a clean water or boating safety grant idea. The goal of the grant program is to help make behavioral changes in the boating community via grassroots projects........

U.S. Coast Guard Coast Guard Participated In New Orleans' Mardi Gras........
Every year, the U.S. Coast Guard participated in the New Orleans Carnival tradition by ferrying the King of Zulu and his entourage from the Port of New Orleans administrative building to Spanish Plaza along the banks of the Mississippi River, near the French Quarter, where he was met by Rex, King of Carnival.
Rear Admiral Richard Timme, commander of the eighth Coast Guard District says that the Coast Guard was honored to contribute to and participate in a safe and secure 2022 Carnival season.
Timme added that Coast Guard units have been participating in Mardi Gras events for decades. Hs says that delivering Rex and Zulu aboard a Coast Guard cutter on Lundi Gras offers the Coast Guard a fitting place in the New Orleans Mardi Gras traditions........

Lake Of The Ozarks Low Lake Levels Reveal Holes At Public Boat Ramps........
The Missouri Department of Conservation recently announced that the low water levels at the Lake of the Ozarks has caused some troubles at some of the public access boat ramps.
The MDC is recommending caution when using MDC boat accesses at the Lake of the Ozarks, as they have sustained damage over the past several months due to low water conditions.
MDC Central Regional Resource Management Supervisor John George says that water levels have been too close to the ends of the ramps, so as boats are being loaded onto trailers, their props are scouring holes in the lake bed just beyond the ramp ends. This has resulted in trailers being damaged when the tires fall into those holes........

Grafton Ferry
The Grafton Ferry is opening for the season on April 22, 2022 !
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

Added Sunday More Information Cahokia Creek Near Edwardsville, Illinois Marathon Released More Information Related To The Oil Spill........
Late Saturday morning, Marathon Pipe Line Communications Director Jamil T Kheiry released some additional information concerning the crude oil spill and Marathon Pipe Line's response to the incident.
○ After detecting the spill Friday morning, MPL shut down the pipeline and dispatched responders. ○ Crude oil got into the Cahokia diversion channel, and MPL deployed absorbent boom to contain the spill. ○ MPL has been monitoring the area as a precaution and has not detected hazardous emissions levels. No injuries were reported. ○ There are no water intakes or private well in the area near the spill. ○ MPL is working with local, state and federal agencies in their response, which has included boom, vacuum trucks, skimmers and excavating equipment. ○ An investigation into the cause of the pipeline leak is underway.

Cahokia Creek Near Edwardsville, Illinois Oil Pipeline Leaks Dumps Crude Into Mississippi River Tributary........
A large pipeline leak released thousands of gallons of oil into the Cahokia Creek near Edwardsville, Illinois. Cahokia Creek is a tributary of the Mississippi River. It's confluence with the Mississippi River is near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.
Shortly before noon Friday morning, a Marathon Pipeline leaked crude oil into the adjacent land and water. The pipeline is located close to the intersection of Illinois Route 143 and Illinois Route 159.
According to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, approximately 165,000 gallons were released before being contained. Crews used floating devices to absorb the oil from the water........

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois Corps Encouraged To Proceed With Quincy Bay Restoration........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District recently met with Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, D-ILL, who encouraged the Corps to proceed with the Quincy Bay restoration project.
Colonel Jesse Curry, commander of the Corps' Rock Island District provided Durbin with an update on the Quincy Bay and other projects. Durbin urged the Corps of speed up the $33 million Quincy Bay Project, which will improve the ecosystem and waterways for recreation and boaters.
Durbin says that Illinois' water infrastructure is an essential component of the state's economy, and with millions in funding coming to the state via the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, he is hoping to see Illinois' locks, dams and shorelines revitalized........

More Information Mississippi River Cruising Viking Mississippi Starts Final Construction Phase........
Viking Cruises first U.S. built riverboat has been launched and is now beginning the final phase of it's construction at Edison Chouest Offshore's LaShip shipyard in Houma, Louisiana.
The 450 foot long Viking Mississippi will feature 193 all-outside staterooms, which will accommodate 386 passengers in five decks. The staterooms will range in size from 268 square feet to over 1,000 square feet. All will feature a veranda or French balcony, a King bed, flat screen TV, mini bar, a glass-enclosed shower, heated bathroom floor and around-the-clock room service.
Over 7,500 passengers are expected during the 2022 season, with more than double that projected for the 2023 season. Viking plans to make stops in seven states, including New Orleans, Darrow, St. Francisville, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Natchez and Vicksburg, Mississippi, Memphis, Tennessee, St. Louis and Hannibal, Missouri, Burlington, Dubuque and Davenport, Iowa , La Crosse, Wisconsin and Red Wing and St. Paul, Minnesota........

Proctor-branded RIB builder Rayglass has introduced their custom 410 Targa, which is equipped with twin 600 Horsepower Mercury V-12 Verados. According to Rayglass Boats, these engines are the most powerful engines to be fitted on a RIB vessel.
Mercury Marine president, Chris Drees says that the V-12 Verado outboard offers boaters unrivaled freedom, luxury and power to pursue their passions on the water.
In order to accommodate the size of the Verados, Rayglass had to modify the RIB's transom to handle the engine's weight and torque. Rayglass CEO Dave Larsen says that they wanted to construct a boat that could outperform everything on the water, and the 410 Targa is it........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton Planning New Approach To The Riverfront........
During Wednesday's meeting of the Alton City Council, aldermen discussed the proposed addition to the city code which would create a seven member Riverfront Development Commission.
Members of the Riverfront Development Commission would be appointed by the Mayor with the advise and consent of the City Council. The Riverfront Development Commission would help guide the planning for Alton's Mississippi River frontage.
The Riverfront Development Commission would provide suggestions, options and feedback in order to further develop the Alton riverfront. The commission would engage with the public and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for ideas and land use to guarantee that residents can provide input on the riverfront's future........

Michigan-based vehicle transportation company, Precision Vehicle Holding, has withdrawn their proposal to build a facility that would store and shi[ thousands of General Motors Co. automobiles following months of complaints from neighbors in Chesterfield.
Precision Vehicle Holding stated that concerns from Chesterfield officials and residents in nearby neighborhoods prompted the company to "discontinue the project at this location.
General Motors spokesperson, Dan Flores says that General Motors agreed with Precision's decision, and that they would work with the company to find an alternate site........

Missouri River At Washington, Missouri Proposed Amphitheater On Hold Until At Least 2026........
Washington city officials report that people who are anxious to see live music, plays and other performances at a proposed amphitheater located along the Washington, Missouri riverfront will have to wait a bit longer.
On Monday evening, City Administrator Darren Lamb stated that the city is constantly looking for ways to make improvements, and they are definitely open to pursuing the amphitheater project, however, there is no funding for the project at this time.
The drive to bring an amphitheater to the riverfront gained momentum in 2017 when the Washington City Council approved a plan to construct the amphitheater east of the existing shelter houses and pavilions at the James Rennick Riverfrotn Park........

The Grafton Ferry is opening for the season on April 22, 2022 !
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

prepare for a summer of boating? The 800,000-plus member Boat
Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has 21
fuel-saving tips boaters can do to help save on fuel and still
enjoy a fulfilling season on the water. While some of these
techniques may sound obvious, there may be some you never
considered.

recreational boaters use the free BoatUS App to request
TowBoatUS on-water assistance. It’s the only on-water towing app
with the ability to link the captain of a recreational boat with
the closest local TowBoatUS towing captain, eliminating the need
