Mississippi River At Red Wing, Minnesota

Bright Orange Shoes Aid In Young Boy's Rescue After Boat Collision.........

Last week, a man was on the Mississippi River near Red Wing, Minnesota doing a little fishing with his kids, when a barge struck their boat.  All five of them went into the river.

The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office reports that Jeremy Koenig and his four kids were fishing when their boat's engine gave out and a barge collided with their small boat.

The father and three of the kids were able to get to shore and their boat was pulled to shore.  One of the rescuers spotted the orange shoe of the fourth child under the boat, prompting him to jump into the water and recover the child.

Life-saving efforts commenced on the dock.  He was taken to the Mayo Clinic, where he is in Critical Condition.  The family says that while he is receiving major medical care, he doesn't have any brain damage.........

Mississippi River Cruising

American Cruise Lines Offering Free Airfare For Select Itineraries........

With the increased cost of airfare this summer, American Cruise Lines has announced that they will be offering to pay for airfare through July 2022 for passengers that book one of two itineraries along the Mississippi River.

One itinerary is aboard the American Melody riverboat, which cruises along the Upper Mississippi River, and the second is aboard the American Splendor paddlewheeler that cruises the entire river.

Apart from these Mississippi River itineraries, American Cruise Lines will also be offering a reduced flat-rate airfare within the United States for all of its' other cruises........

Mississippi River Near Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Corps Taking Action After New River Channel Forms.........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been forced to take action after a gap in the Mississippi River bank has widened into a river channel, which is funneling huge amounts of water through it.

On Thursday, a Corps spokesman stated that they are moving to close the entrance to the newly formed "Neptune Pass" with rock placed on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River.

The new channel is slowing the flow of water downstream, which is causing issues with the river's main shipping channel.  State officials are wondering if leaving the channel open and funneling water into Breton Sound could help restore lost wetlands.........

   River History....

June 9, 1910 in River History

US Congress passed the Motorboat Act.

The Motorboat Act of 1910 finally established a creditable boating safety program. The act required boats to be equipped with navigation lights, whistles, fire extinguishers, and life preservers. Although enforcement was still a problem, the number of accidents immediately declined.

Fishing News From Reelfoot Lake

Angler Reels In Rare Fish On Last Cast........

On May 29th, Tennessee angler Victor Siwik was about to pack it in and head for shore when he decided to cast his line out one more time.  He ended up reeling in a fish unlike anything he had ever seen before.

Siwik says that when he saw that white tail appear out of the water, he told himself that he cannot lose that fish.  Siwik ended up catching a 41 pound ghost-white carp.

He says that he caught the fish on rod and reel alone, but had to put his arm in the fish's mouth and out the gills to keep it from getting away.  The fish was about 4 feet long and had hints of yellow and black on it's scales, as well as reddish fin tips.

The strange coloration may be due to a melanin condition called leucism, which affects pigmentation. The fish is an invasive species, so Siwik had no choice but to take it home.  He intends to mount a replica in his home........

NMMA Reports New Powerboat Sales Normalizing........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association reports that following two years of historic increases in new powerboat sales, the first quarter of 2022 is indicating that the market is showing signs of normalizing.

During the first quarter of 2022l, new powerboat retail sales totaled 54,000 units, which is a decrease of 20 percent compared to the first quarter of 2021.  Sales has continued to surpass the pre-pandemic levels, with sales being up 20 percent  from Q1 2019's 45,000 units.

Ellen Bradley, NMMA Senior Vice President says that not surprisingly, new powerboat sales has started to stabilize following the extraordinary growth in 2020 and 2021 as competition for consumer spending on recreational activities returns........

Private Island For Sale On The Lake........

A private island has been released for sale at the Lake of the Ozarks.  The island is located off the coast of Sunrise Beach, Missouri, and is one of the "Iconic Twin Islands" along the Main Channel of the lake.

Listed with a price of $1 million, the island includes 880 feet of lakefront property, electricity, a partial seawall and the beginnings of a foundation.  The island is permitted for a dock as well.

Property records reveal that the island was originally listed for $1 million in July 2020 and then again a year later with a $5,000 price decrease.  The listing was removed in January and then relisted for $1 million in May........

Looking Back

Missouri River Near Gasconade, Missouri

The Corps' Missouri River Boatyard........

Back in 1892, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers leased a parcel of farmland at the mouth of the Gasconade River located near present day Mile 104.8 along the right bank of the Missouri River.  The Corps used that land to build and repair vessels that were used in making Missouri River improvements.

By 1910, the Corps purchased the land and in 1929, they added acreage as they began building more vessels.  By 1935, there were 500 people employed at the Gasconade facility.  The boatyard was quite active during World War II and immediately following the war.

As the Missouri River improvement projects were being completed, the shipyard was being used less and less.  By 1966, there were only 35 employees at the facility.  In June of 1972, the facility was closed.  During it's 80 years, hundreds of vessels were constructed there........

June 8, 1813 in River History

Because of increased tensions with the War of 1812, Fort Osage located on the Missouri River near present day Kansas City, was abandoned on or about this day.

The fort was built under the direction of General William Clark, joint commander of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition, Fort Osage was established in 1808 as a military outpost in the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. The Fort’s purpose was to provide a military presence in the territory in order to assure Spain, France and Great Britain that the United States meant to protect its territory by military strength and to establish healthy relations with the Native American population in the territory

Dan Faust

Paddling the Mississippi River Again..

My name is Dan Faust. I paddled the Mississippi River last year ( 2021 ) from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico. This year I am going to paddle the river again, but it will be with Dale Sanders and Matt Briggs. Dale will be setting the age record as the oldest person to paddle the entire length of the Mississippi River. The trip starts from Lake Itasca, MN on June 14, 2022; which is also Dale's 87th birthday. What an amazing and historic event this trip will be. I am sure that your readers will be interested. I hope that you can give this trip some attention here on your awesome RiverBills.com site. Dale has a website at greybeardadventurer.com and he is active on Instagram and Facebook as "greybeardsanders". There will also be other posts coming from Matt Briggs and myself, as well as other trip participants and support crew. Just search for Dale Sanders.

Stay tuned....RiverBills.com will be following Dan and his crew on their journey

Lake Of The Ozarks

Another Attempt At Boat Parade World Record This Weekend........

The Lake of the Ozarks Boat Parade is returning this weekend, giving participants a second chance to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Boat Parade.  In order to break the world record, the parade must have 1,181 boats.

This year's Lake of the Ozarks Boat Parade will begin at 11 am on Saturday, June 11 at the 3 Mile Marker of the Grand Glaize Arm. The finish line boats with the checkered flag will be at the 1 Mile Marker.

Last year, there were several boats that were disqualified for not finishing the parade.  To make sure participants finish the parade, they should clear the Grand Glaize Bridge to guarantee they are counted........

After being missing for six years, the skeleton of “pretty and vivacious” Julie Leblanc of Jefferson County was found floating in a rowboat in the Mississippi.

Two of her beaus had also been missing for the same amount of time. A lover’s triangle, double murder, or a flight from justice?

Fisher said that the boat had apparently lost the engine.  The vessel drifted along the river, and was eventually anchored along the Illinois side.

The rescued people were transported to the Alton Marina.  There were no injuries reported........

EMPHASIS: Patrol: Summer Water Safety Tips

Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, encourages everyone to incorporate safety into any plans to enjoy Missouri’s waterways. Nicer weather means an increase in activity regarding boating, swimming, and floating. Col. Olson reminds everyone that troopers patrol the state’s waterways to enforce Missouri’s boating laws and assist where needed. Everyone is asked to do their part to help ensure a safe summer.

Swimming Safety
Missouri's lakes and rivers can include currents, drop-offs, and floating debris, which makes swimming more challenging. Please, wear a life jacket, take a friend with you, know your swimming ability, and stay sober around water. Pay close attention to children around water.

.
Keep in mind that exhaustion is a very real possibility if you’ve been swimming for a long period of time. Don’t make the mistake of overestimating your swimming ability. All swimmers are encouraged to use a life jacket, especially young children and inexperienced swimmers. Younger, inexperienced swimmers may become exhausted before they realize they are in trouble.
 .

Avoid putting yourself at risk when trying to assist someone who is struggling in the water. Assist them by tossing a floatation device or extending an object to them. Keep yourself safe! If you do have to enter the water to assist them, always put on a life jacket first.

Floating Safety
Before you go floating, check the weather and the river level. A lot of rain affects the speed of the current and the amount of debris in the water. Knowing the river conditions before you go is a priority for your group's safety. Be aware of changing conditions downstream which may endanger yourself or your group. Consider each person's level of experience, and base your float plan on the person with the least experience. Pair inexperienced floaters with those who have more experience, and make sure everyone in your group knows your rescue plan.
.

Bring a life jacket for each person, dry clothing, and a first aid kit. Remember to store extra items in watertight containers. Everyone should use a life jacket, especially those vulnerable to drowning, such as children and adults drinking alcohol.
.
It takes a lot of energy to navigate a canoe, kayak, or inner tube on a float trip. Packing snacks and beverages to help you refuel is a good idea. Make sure you follow the law for these types of watercraft: Glass beverage containers are not allowed. Ensure coolers are sealed. Collect your trash and take it with you after the float. Leave no trace, so Missouri’s waterways remain beautiful for others.
.
If you capsize in swift water conditions, hold onto your craft and move immediately to the upstream side to avoid being trapped between the boat and an obstacle. Float on your back, feet together and pointed downstream, and release your craft only if it improves your safety
.

Boating Safety
Pay attention to other boats and watercraft, so you can make boating maneuvers early and deliberately when encountering other vessels. Understand that although no vessel has the "right of way" over another vessel, there are some rules every operator should follow. It is the responsibility of both operators to take action in order to avoid a collision. When operating a power-driven vessel, you must give way to any vessel not under command, a vessel with limited maneuverability, a commercial fishing vessel, a sailboat under sail, and a canoe or vessel powered by paddle or oars alone. While operating a vessel under sail, you must give way to any vessel not under command, a vessel restricted in its ability to maneuver, and commercial fishing vessels.
.
Understand that distractions and alcohol consumption slow reaction time. Please designate a sober captain. Drinking alcohol irresponsibly on the water puts you at greater risk of being involved in a boating crash or becoming a drowning victim. Alcohol affects your judgment, reaction time, vision, coordination, and comprehension. It affects you more on the water than on land due to boating stressors. The movement of the boat, vibration and noise from the boat’s motor, sun, and wind are all boating stressors and enhance the effect of alcohol on your body. If alcohol is part of your water activities, drink responsibly: Never operate a vessel if you’ve consumed alcohol.
.
Many injuries suffered on our lakes during the boating season occur when boats travel across large wakes and the operator or passengers are injured from the impact. Each boater should do their best to reduce the size of their wake and know how to navigate across large wakes. Reducing your speed, approaching the waves at a 45- to 90-degree angle, and keeping the bow of your boat elevated is the safest way to navigate a large wake. Be alert to rough water conditions to protect yourself and your passengers.
.
Inspect the engine compartment each time you fuel up. Use your engine’s blower system to properly ventilate the compartment for several minutes after fueling up and prior to starting the boat. Gas fumes can result in a fire or explosion if not vented properly.
.
At night, remember to check your vessel’s navigation lights before heading out, and be sure to have spare bulbs on board. Avoid overloading your boat with too many passengers. This can cause the boat to become swamped and affect the handling of the boat. Observe Missouri’s nighttime speed limit of 30 miles per hour on the water. Slow down and take your time. Nighttime crashes tend to involve more serious injuries and damage.
.
If you need assistance or witness criminal activity on Missouri’s waterways contact the nearest Highway Patrol troop headquarters by calling the Patrol Emergency Report Line at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.
Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Watch your wake!
.
Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

LL&W's Chad Pregracke Honored At Paducah Maritime Day

Late last month, the Port of Paducah Propeller Club hosted their annual Maritime Day Ceremony and Merchant Mariner Memorial.  During the event, they honored Chad Pregracke as maritime person of the year.  Tim Cahill was also named as port person of the year.

Pregracke is the founder of Living Lands & Waters, which is a not-for-profit environmental association that has become a successful river cleanup organization that takes care of hundreds of miles of rivers.

Cahill serves as the executive director of the Paducah-McCracken County Riverport Authority.  The port can handle containerized, bulk and break-bulk cargoes, as well as offering storage and warehouse facilities.  The port is also serving as the location where the steel superstructure for the new Cumberland River Bridge is being constructed........

Mississippi River At West Alton, Missouri

The Audubon Center At Riverlands Hosted Paddlefest........

On Saturday, the Audubon Center at Riverlands in West Alton, Missouri hosted Paddlefest, where participants could take guided canoe and kayak tours around Riverlands Bay as well as visit educational booths and food vendors on shore.

Instructor Paul North advises paddlers to always wear a life jacket, never kayak alone and make sure not to over-exert yourself.  He notes that it is easy to get a kayak top capsize, so you should be able to slide out of your boat.

One of the Paddlefest vendors was Team River Runner of St. Louis, an organization that outfits kayaks for disabled Armed Forces Veterans, allowing them to still enjoy paddling........

Fishing For Freedom Event Held This Weekend........

Saturday morning, the Fishing for Freedom planners and volunteers kicked off the weekend with a mini-tournament for the residents of the Illinois Veterans Home.

Sara Colgrove, director of the Home's volunteer services and activities says that the event is a dream come true for many of the residents, as they have the opportunity to get off the unit and do something different.

Colgrove added that it is quite meaningful to have Fishing for Freedom and their volunteers come out and remember these Veterans too.  Adam Brocksieck with Fishing for Freedom says that this is the event's 12th year overall, and their seventh with the Veteran's Home........

The Gulf Of Mexico

Gulf Dead Zone Expected To Return This Summer........

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently released a forecast that predicts that a "dead zone" will be returning to the Gulf of Mexico this summer.  A dead zone is an area of water that contains little-to-no oxygen, which causes sea life to die off.

NOAA's forecast for this summer predicts that the dead zone may be slightly smaller than last year, however, it will still be on par with the average size.  NOAA began tracking the dead zone 35 years ago.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, last year's Gulf of Mexico dead zone covered approximately 6,300 square miles, which was equivalent to over four million acres of habitat potentially unavailable to fish and bottom species........

The Dinky Replica Has Been Unveiled........

On Saturday morning, officials and historians in Grafton and Alton pulled the wraps off of a replica of the Dinky railbus that is displayed at the Edward Amburg History Museum and Visitor's Center in Grafton.

The restored railbus features photos of locals that once rode the Dinky in the windows, waving and appearing to be enjoying the ride.  Alton's Ben Allen is pictured in the driver's seat, appearing to take the wheel.

Allen is one of the owners of The Loading Dock restaurant, which was the location of the Grafton Dinky turnaround.  He is also responsible for bringing the Dinky back to Grafton.  At 81, Allen remembers riding the Dinky as a kid........

The Dinky Is Returning To Grafton........

The Rotary Club Pavilion Going Up On Hannibal Riverfront........

The new Rotary Pavilion is quickly taking shape along the recently rejuvenated Hannibal Riverfront.  Mary Lynne Richards with Hannibal Parks & Recreation says that last month's weather delayed construction work on the new 40 foot pavilion.

More favorable weather conditions on Thursday and Friday allowed crews to make considerable progress building the pavilion's metal skeleton on top of it's new concrete foundation.

Richards says that the new 40 foot octagonal pavilion is expected to be completed in time for the Rotary Riverfest, which is scheduled for Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11........

Power Loss Due To Fuel Contamination Prompts Coast Guard Warning........

A tow vessel recently lost power due to it's fuel system being contaminated with water, prompting the U.S. Coast Guard's Office of Investigations and Analysis to release a Marine Safety Alert warning tow vessel operators to by aware of fuel contamination.

Reportedly, a tow vessel operating in a push-ahead configuration lost all propulsion while operating along the Mississippi River .  The incident occurred about 3.5 hours after fueling at a riverside facility.

The Coast Guard reports that there was no significant damage to the vessel nor any injuries to the crewmembers.  An investigation revealed that the vessel's fuel system was so contaminated that the engines went into a reduced power mode prior to shutting down completely........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

A Look Back At The First Wagon Crossing Of The Eads Bridge........

History was made at 5:30 am on June 4, 1874 when teamster Joseph Gartside paid his 50 cent toll and led his four horses and wagon across the new Illinois and St. Louis Bridge.

Gartside's wagon, which was decorated with flags and streamers led more than 700 wagons across the river on the new bridge, commencing cross-river commerce on wheels.

The first bridge crossing the Mississippi River at St. Louis opened in a series of events running up to the July 4,1874 dedication.  Pedestrians were allowed to cross for a nickel on May 23rd, but wagons weren't allowed to cross until after June 2nd, when the roadway approach from Illinois was finished........

Some Highlights of This Week's

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS

District 8 MRS                                                 UPDATED JUNE 01, 2022

Mississippi River System

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISOR
The following areas are in the high water watch phase IAW the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
  Zone 28 (Mile 185.4 – Mile 160.1) and
  Zone 29 (Mile 160.0 – Mile 109.9).
All towing vessels are advised to favor the center of the channel and proceed at the slowest safe operating speed based upon prevailing conditions in order to minimize wake damage to personal property. Towboat operators should be experienced in high water operations, use caution in all passing and meeting situations and be mindful of all charted bridge navigational clearances. Downstreaming operations are not recommended. Drift and debris may be a hazard to navigation and may drag buoys off station, so remain cautious while transiting.

MILE 282.0 - SUBMERGED OBSTRUCTION
A submerged obstruction has been reported in the vicinity of Mile 282.0, possibly protruding from the Louisiana Railroad Bridge protection cell, LDB, Illinois side landing. Mariners are urged to exercise caution in the area.

Boat Gas News

Legislation Introduced For Better E15 Labeling At The Pump........

Two members of the Congressional Boating Congress, Representatives Lois Frankel, D-Fla., and Austin Scott, R-Ga. recently introduced the bi-partisan Consumer Protection and Fuel Transparency Act in Congress.

This legislation would require better labeling at fuel pumps that dispense gasoline mixed with 15 percent alcohol, or E-15, to better protect consumers from misfueling.

The use of E-15 in boats is prohibited by federal law.  Using E-15 in marine engines will void engine warranties because the blended fuel has a proven track record of damaging marine engines.  Labeling at the pump has been historically inadequate, leading to misfueling by unwary boaters........

Mississippi River At Alma, Wisconsin

Towboat Lost Power, Allided With Lock And Dam No.4.........

On the evening of May 21, a towboat lodged against Lock and Dam No.4 along the Mississippi River in Alma, Wisconsin.  The vessel reportedly lost control, alliding with the dam.

The Susan J. Gundlach was moving southbound in Pool 4, when it lost control.  There were no injuries or spills reported.  The vessel was removed the next day.

According to the Buffalo County Wisconsin Sheriff's Office, calls regarding the collision came in around 11 pm.  The Susan J. Gundlach is owned by the Canal Barge Company.  The vessel is a twin screw, 2000 HP towboat that was constructed in 2012........

RBFF Released 2022 Special Report On Fishing.........

According to preliminary data from the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation's 2022 Special Report on Fishing, 52 million Americans aged 6 and up went fishing during 2021.

Despite being down slightly from 2020, fishing participation exceeded 50 million for the second time in 14 years, posting gains over 2019, and following a six-year upward trend.

RBFF president and CEO Dave Chanda says that they were shooting for a goal of 60 million anglers by 2021, but there were plenty of positive numbers in the report.  An additional 2.3 million Americans went fishing last year compared to the pre-COVID-19 years........

01 June 2012 in River History

On June 1, Bob Bellingham put his kayak into the Missouri River at Three Forks, Montana to begin a 2,341 mile expedition to St. Louis.

The idea for the journey came while Bellingham was working in his office in Perth, Australia. Bellingham stated that there has to be a better life, and he found it down river.

Bellingham added that although one has to be happy by yourself on a trip like this one, he has found that the people he meets along the river are the best part of the journey........
