Mississippi River Near Grafton, Illinois Accidental Fire At Palisades Nature Preserve Benefited Nature.........
Last November, an accidental fire occurred at the Palisades Nature Preserve near Grafton. Palisades staff and land management partners at the National Great Rovers Research and Education Center are saying that the fire turned out to be a positive occurrence.
Land management officials sometimes perform controlled burns to kill off invasive plant species, stop trees from overtaking prairie areas and more. This uncontrolled fire seems to have provided many of the same benefits.
Justin Shew, the NGRREC Conservation Program Manager says that the fire cleared the way for native plant species to thrive along the hill prairie. The Palisades Preserve hilltop prairie is a remnant prairie, meaning that it is an example of what the region looked like prior to European settlement.........

Mississippi River Near Red Wing, Minnesota Boat Stuck In Roller Gates Rescued From Mississippi River........
On Friday, June 17, 2022, a boat with five aboard was stuck in the roller gates at lock and Dam No.3 along the Mississippi River. The Red Wing Fire Department was called out the river at around 6:20 pm.
According to a press release, responders with the Red Wing Fire Department arrived within 22 minutes and were able to tow the boat from the roller gates to safety.
There were no injuries reported........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Riverview Drive Project On Aldermen's Agenda........
On Tuesday, June 21, Alton's Aldermen are scheduled to meet as a Committee of the Whole where they will discuss a design bill proposal from GeoStabilization International for the repair of Riverview Drive. If the committee approves the proposal, the Riverview Drive project will cost approximately $3,498,440.
Back in May 2019, officials started monitoring the Riverview Drive retaining wall and sidewalk after cracks began to appear just west of Riverview Park after heavy rainfall. In August 2019, a section of the bluff eroded, prompting officials to close Riverview Drive.
In May 2021, following close to two years of negotiations, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Illinois Emergency Management announced that Alton would be receiving $3,759,186 to assist with the project. Last month, Alton Public Works Director Mike Parsons says that repair work could begin as soon August........

The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

Added Sunday Lower Mississippi River The Mississippi River's Newest Channel Is Building Up Louisiana's Coast........
Approximately 55 miles downriver from New Orleans, just before the Mississippi River splits into it's three-channeled delta, an opening in the river's eastern bank has expanded into a massive channel.
The new branch, known as Neptune Pass, is diverting some 118,000 cubic feet of Mississippi River water into a body of water on the other side, Quarantine Bay.
The diversion is enough to confound vessels trying to navigate downstream, so the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to close off the channel next month. The downside is that the diversion seems to be building up small bits of land along the Gulf Coast........

Summer is just around the bend and the temperatures are rising. We protect ourselves by staying hydrated and using sunscreen, but how do you prevent your boat from feeling the heat?
An overheating boat is not a minor issue. According to BoatUS Marine Insurance data, nine percent of boat fires are caused by engine overheating. So, How do boaters know when their boat is overheating?
The most obvious way is if the temperature gauge is reading higher than normal. If the engine is losing power, emitting an excessive amount of steam or doesn't want to start up after being shut down, it may be overheating.
If the boat's engine is overheating, there is an issue that will need to be resolved. Some common issues are a water pump impeller failure, a loose or broken engine water pump belt, clogged water strainers or intakes........

The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

Tennessee River Near Gilbertsville, Kentucky Kentucky Lock Reopened After Sunken Barge Removed........
The Kentucky Lock at Mile Marker 22.4 along the Tennessee River reopened at 6 pm on June 15th after it was closed on June 11th, when a barge sank in the lock chamber.
Caleb Skinner, the navigation manager of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District said that salvage operations began on June 14th and took two days.
Crews had to pump out water and remove approximately 2,000 tons of gravel in order to refloat the barge. Reportedly, when locking through, the barge caught on the miter sill of the lock, causing the front of the barge submerge and begin to take on water........

Lake Of The Ozarks Tow Boat Tie-Up, Wakesports Hangout Relocated To Dog Days.........
The party scheduled to kick off the inaugural Tow-Boat Tie-Up has been relocated from Margaritaville to Dog Days. The new event will be kicking off a weekend of events Friday night, June 17th.
The Tow-Boat Tie-Up is organized by Stateamind Water Sports and IMG welcomes all wakesports aficionados to join in a Friday night party and a Saturday tie-up.
The next morning, wakesports enthusiasts will be headed to Linn Creek Cove at the 31 Mile Marker to shred and cove out all afternoon. The event is free, but participants are encouraged to register if they plan to attend........

Boat Manufacturer BRP Discusses Expansion Ambitions........
BRP recently announced that their plans to leverage the Rotax Project Ghost propulsion plan and emerging leadership in the pontoon segment to gain over $780 million in annual marine revenue.
The company says that their Manitou, AlumaCraft and Quintrex brands will increase market share by 2025, and expansion at their Manitou and AlumaCraft facilities will help achieve that goal.
BRP states that they will be growing revenue from their entry -level Sea-Doo Switch pontoon boats to $388 million by fiscal 2025. The company says that when combined with Manitou's retail projections, they will be well positioned to be number 1 in the pontoon segment........

The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

Yellowstone River Flooding Update Floodwaters Headed To The Missouri River........
The floodwaters along the Yellowstone River that stormed through Yellowstone National Park will find it's way into the Missouri River. As of Tuesday, the national park was closed due to mudslides and damage caused by the raging Yellowstone River.
The Yellowstone River flows into the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota. According to Eileen Williamson with the U.S.. Army Corps of Engineers Missouri River Basin public affairs office in Omaha, Nebraska, they are keeping an eye on the Williston gauges to determine the effects of the flooding on South Dakota.
Williamson says that the Missouri River is expected to reach flood stage at Williston, however, there is a levee there, so no flooding is expected. The floodwaters will head south from Williston and arrive at Lake Sakakawea and the Garrison Dam, where the reservoir should handle the runoff.........

Mississippi River Near Grafton, Illinois New Mississippi Monster Waterslide Almost Complete........
This week, workers were making progress on building the new Mississippi Monster Slide at Raging Rivers Water Park along the Great River Road, east of Grafton, Illinois.
A new completion date has been set for July 1st, weather permitting. This spring, construction work has bee hampered by rain and muddy conditions on the dirt covered hills where it is being built, preventing heavy equipment from being used.
For several months, workers have been pre-assembling slide sections in the parking lot. The Mississippi Monster will feature three hidden chambers, enclosed tubes and a huge splash at the end........

Lake Of The Ozarks Island For Sale At The Lake Of The Ozarks........
A private one-acre island on the Lake of the Ozarks has been listed for sale for a cool $1 million. The island is known as being one of the Twin Islands, and is located on the main channel in the northern part of the LOTO region.
The island is a short boat ride from several attractions and restaurants in Sunrise Beach, including Shady Gators, Franky and Louie's and Camden Resort. The island also provides an excellent viewing experience for boat races and peak tourism season.
Currently, the island is permitted for a dock, electricity and a partial seawall. A previous owner had started some architectural work around a few trees and poured a foundation. It is not known what kind of structure was in the works........

The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

Upper Missouri River Basin Despite Slight Improvement, Runoff Forecast Still Below Normal........
The most recent runoff forecast from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division is showing some improvement, however, 2022 is still predicted to be considerably drier than normal.
The updated forecast for this year is 18.3 million acre-feet, which is approximately 71 percent of average. While the newest forecast is 0.5 million acre-feet higher than last month's estimates, 2022 is shaping up to be the 25th lowest calendar year runoff since 1898.
John Remus, Chief of the division says that a wet April and May in North Dakota has resulted in wetter soil within the state, however, dry soil remains win the remainder of the basin........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Repair Work On Riverview Drive May Commence Soon........
Repair work on the collapsed wall and adjacent section of Riverview Drive may begin soon, as the Alton City Council is considering a proposal from Colorado-based GeoStabilization International.
A section of the wall on Riverview Drive collapsed in January 2020 following a mudslide induced by heavy rainfall. According to Mike Parsons, the Alton Public Works Director, the project will take several months to complete.
The estimated price for the repair work is just under $3.5 million and the Federal Emergency Management Agency is still expected to pay for a portion of that.........

River Shipping News Port Infrastructure Investments Discussed During Inland Marine Expo........
Attendees of the recent Inland Marine Expo in St. Louis, Missouri were updated on system-wide investments in the Port of New Orleans as well as recent infrastructure investments in Midwest ports.
Dennis Wilmsmeyer, the executive director of America's Central Port near Granite City, Illinois discussed recent projects at the port, including the recent completion of two new rail tracks to the Granite City Harbor, which will facilitate grain loading.
Ed Weilbacher, the general manager of the Kaskaskia Regional Port District discussed the district's growth and recent accomplishments. He noted that the Kaskaskia River has doubled it's tonnage over the past 10 years, now moving 1.5 million tons of cargo annually........

The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to

the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market

Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

Tennessee River Near Grand Rivers, Kentucky Corps Working To Clear Sunken Barge From Kentucky Lock Chamber........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District recently announced that crews were working to clear a sunken barge from Kentucky Lock's chamber. The Corps reported that the barge sank at around 7:30 am on Saturday, June 11.
Lockmaster Caleb Skinner says that the barge's owner, Terral River Service intends to refloat the barge on Tuesday, June 14th. Skinner said that the barge was carrying gravel when it hung on the miter sill of the lock, causing the barge to tip up and take on water.
Skinner said that the owner plans to pump out the water, hoping to float and remove the barge by the end of the day Tuesday. There were two deckhands working during the incident, neither were injured during the incident........

Lake Of The Ozarks Hundreds Turn Out For Parade.... No New Record....
Last weekend, a second attempt was made at setting a new world record for the longest boat parade at the Lake of the Ozarks. While over 300 boats turned out, the effort was far fr4om record-breaking. The Guinness World Record for Largest Boat Parade was set in Malaysia in 2014 with 1,180 boats.
Heather Brown, interim director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau says that the participants seemed to really enjoy themselves. Brown added that they wished that there had been more participants so they could have set a new record.
During the CVB's first record attempt last year, 612 boaters participated. After two unsuccessful attempts, the CVB does not have any plans for trying again in 2023........

Illinois River At Henry, Illinois Tiny River Town Building Illinois River Port........
Someday, the tiny town of Henry, Illinois will have a large-scale port along the Illinois River. According to Henry Mayor Jeff Bergfeld, the idea originally came about in 2006, when the city entered into a public-private partnership with the concrete company Ozinga Materials.
Ozinga is using the city land as part of a gravel mining operation, and in exchange, the company is slowly constructing a port for Henry as they extract materials from the ground.
Bergfeld says that it will likely take another 20 years for Ozinga to move enough material to create the entire 60 acre open water port. The city receives royalties for the materials mined from their property........

The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

The Flotilla included a sub-chaser, three seaplanes, a destroyer, and a submarine. The submarine did daily demonstrations of running submerged between the Eads and the Free Bridges. The flotilla had to cut their stay short because of the possibility of dropping river levels that would prevent them from leaving.

Illinois Fishing News Hundreds Turn Out For Fishing Fest........
On Saturday, hundreds of people headed to Pere Marquette State Park north of Grafton, Illinois to participate in the free annual Two Rivers Family Fishing Fest.
Attendees were able to participate in a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing in a catch-and-release bluegill pond, a trout pond, bow fishing stations, a 4,000 gallon aquarium stocked with native Illinois River fish, entertainment and educational and activity booths.
According to participant 11 year old Addison Cope, catching a small trout at the event's man-made pond was the easy part. The hard part was getting ahold of the fish once it was out of the water........

Mississippi River Near Chester, Illinois A New Chester Bridge Is In The Works........
The World War II-era Chester Bridge, which is a continuing Truss span carrying U.S. 51 across the Mississippi River between Perryville, Missouri and Chester, Illinois is slated to be replaced no later than 2026.
The Chester Bridge was originally built in 1942, but had to be reconstructed two years later after severe storms destroyed the main bridge. The span carries some 7,000 vehicles per day and has two 11 foot lanes.
According to officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation, the Chester Bridge remains safe to travel across, however, the aging span is considered to be poor condition. MoDOT last performed a complete inspection of the bridge in the fall of 2021........

Missouri River At St. Charles, Missouri Eastbound Blanchette Bridge Lanes Closing This Week.........
Beginning at 8 pm Sunday evening, MoDOT crews closed the two right lanes of eastbound Interstate 70 on the Blanchette Bridge to begin Epoxy work., The project had been delayed because of the weather.
According to a news release from the Missouri Department of Transportation, the two right lanes and the 5th Street entrance ramp onto eastbound I-70 at the Blanchette Bridge will be closed beginning Monday evening. The closure will run from 8 pm to 5 am, Monday through Thursday, weather permitting.
This construction is a continuation of MoDOT's Interstate 70 Blanchette Missouri River Bridge Project that they began in 2020. A shortage of epoxy at the start of the project led to delays in the roadwork........

The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

It is a challenge to navigate on the water at night and making sure that your boat is equipped with the correct lighting is crucial to preventing boating accidents.
Light requirements are intended to help other boaters see one another and determine what direction they are traveling. Boat lighting, however, may not necessarily help a boater see better at night.
In Missouri, there is a 30 MPH nighttime speed limit which goes into effect 30 minutes after sunset, and runs until one hour before sunrise. The required navigation lights differ dependent upon the size and type of boat you have. State law required boaters to display the required lighting between sunset and sunrise.........

This summer, Kansas City artist Steve Snell will be paddling a canoe from the headwaters of the Missouri River in Three Forks, Montana to St. Louis, Missouri. Along his journey, he will be creating paintings and stories that tell the story of the adventures he encounters along the way.
Snell refers to himself as an adventure artist. He says that this summer's trip along the Missouri RIver will be his greatest adventure yet. He adds that there is a certain kind of romantic ideal in his head, that the experience will be amazing, beautiful and a dream of a lifetime.
Snell has been doing these types of adventures as part of his art for approximately 12 years, but this will be his longest solo trip. On this trip, Snell plans to paint watercolors of what he sees each day........

Added Sunday Upper Mississippi River St. Paul Requests Feedback On Proposed River Education Center.........
This week, the City of St. Paul, Minnesota unveiled early design plans for a proposed Mississippi River Learning Center, and now, they are looking for public input on the three design proposals.
According to Mary deLaittre, the executive director of the Great River Passage Conservancy, they are focused on restoration, conservation and resilience as they are making this a big way for people to learn about the land, water and culture of the river.
The plans for the site include canoe launches, lookout sites, picnic areas, trails for walking and cycling, as well as office space for the National Park Service, Mississippi Park Connection and Wilderness Inquiry, the Tribal Historic Preservation Officers and Your Boat Club........

Fishing News From Grafton, Illinois Two Rivers Fishing Fair This Saturday........
On Saturday, Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton, Illinois will be hosting the Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair, which will feature 32 outdoor education stations, a large fishing pond and gifts and prizes for kids that register on site and participate in the activities. The Fishing Fair will run from 10 am to 4 pm.
Among the activities will be a catch-and-release bluegill pond where young anglers will be able to have photos taken with their catch. There will also be the popular One-Cast station, where anyone can win a prize and the trout pond, where your catch can be cleaned and cooked for you.
Each child that completes at least 7 stations will be eligible to receive a prize. A 4,000 gallon mobile aquarium stocked with many of the fish species found in the Illinois River will also be featured at the event........

Upper Missouri River Basin Below Average Runoff Forecast Continues........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently updated their 2022 runoff forecast for the Upper Missouri River basin, and it is just a bit higher than last month's forecast.
The revised forecast is 71 percent of average, or 18.3 million acre feet, which is an increase of 0.5 million acre feet over May's forecast. If the predictions hold, this runoff amount will be the 25th lowest calendar year runoff since 1898.
John Remus, Chief of the Corps' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that a wet April and May in North Dakota has resulted in wetter soil in that state, but the rest of the Missouri River Basin remains dry........

On Thursday, the Mississippi River Legislative Caucus, , which is part of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators, held an event hosted by the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center to celebrate River Days of Action.
During the event, Watershed Scientist John Sloan discussed his research with legislators and other attendees. The Director of Operations and Strategic Initiatives, Dr. Paige Mettler-Cherry discussed the NGRREC's new focus on emerging contaminants, including microplastics........

Mississippi River Management EPA To Distribute $60 Million To Mississippi River States To Control Water Pollution........
Of Friday, the federal government announced that the Environmental Protection Agency will be distributing $60 million among 12 states along the Mississippi River in order to help control farm runoff and other pollution that contribute to the Gulf of Mexico dead zone.
Radhika Fox, EPA assistant administrator for water made the announcement in Des Moines, Iowa with Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig. Naig is the co-chairman of the 12 member Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force.
Last month, the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration announced that the Gulf dead zone is expected to be approximately 5,364 square miles, which is about 15 percent smaller this year than last year.........

Grafton Ferry
The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.
