Mississippi River System

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

MILE 332.0 - MILE 331.3 - DREDGE OPERATION
Continuing until further notice, the M/V CLINTON or the M/V DAVENPORT is conducting dredging operations/strike removal between approximate Miles 332.0 and 331.3, Hogback Island. Work will be conducted from 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., 7-days a week. The M/V CLINTON or the M/V DAVENPORT will monitor VHF-FM Channel 13, 14, 16 or 82 and requests 30-minutes advance notice of passage. Mariners are urged to transit the area at their slowest safe speed to minimize their wake and proceed with caution after passing arrangements have been made

MILE 282.0 - SUBMERGED OBSTRUCTION
A submerged obstruction has been reported in the vicinity of Mile 282.0, possibly protruding from the Louisiana Railroad Bridge protection cell, LDB, Illinois side landing. Mariners are urged to exercise caution in the area.

ILLINOIS RIVER

ILLINOIS WATERWAY - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
The following area is in the low water watch phase IAW the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Grafton (Mile 9.9 – Mile 0.0).
Deep draft tows are advised to depart the area. Vessels shall transit this area at their slowest safe speed near fleeting areas to minimize impact due to the narrow channel width. Tow operators are advised to place the heaviest barges in the middle of the tow and identify fleeting areas in the event of a river closure. Mariners are requested to transit the area with caution and contact U.S. Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River via VHF-FM Channel 16, telephone at (314) 269-2332, or email at mailto:sumrwaterways@uscg.mil, to report shoaling, hazardous conditions or missing aids to navigation.

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Crews Removing Chain Link Fence From The Riverfront........

There are changed being made along the riverfront at Alton, Illinois. On Wednesday, workers from Collins and Hermann were working to remove the decades-old chain link fence running along the lock wall of the Old Lock and Dam No.26.

The chain link fencing will be replaced with black fencing similar to the fencing that is already in place in locations around Riverfront Park. Similar fencing is being installed at the other end of the park to keep visitors off of the railroad tracks service Ardent Mills.

The old lock wall is constructed of reinforced concrete and is sunk into bedrock. The wall is utilized by visiting cruise ships as well as barges needing a spot to tie up along Alton's riverfront........

News Release From BoatUS

OSSINING, N.Y., June 29, 2022 – An early June boating incident on New York’s Hudson River underscores the critical importance of being able to borrow right-sized kid’s life jackets, according to the Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS).

A group of three adults and five children aboard a small bowrider spent some time at a Croton Point Park beach, an anchorage popular with boaters. As the vessel rounded Croton Point on the way home, wind-driven waves combined with the wake of a passing commercial vessel entered the vessel over the bow, quickly swamping the boat. Everyone aboard was immediately up to their waists in water.

Before departing that day, the boat’s owner, Barbara Ann Benson, who had 27 years of boating experience, stopped to borrow five children’s life jackets from a nearby BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water Kids Life Jacket Loaner site at Ossining Boat & Canoe Club (OBCC) in Ossining. The BoatUS Foundation is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit boating safety arm of BoatUS and offers 593 locations across the United States where boaters who may have young guests aboard can borrow child-sized life jackets for the day or weekend at no cost. Loaner sites are typically located at local marine businesses, marinas, firehouses, and community boat and yacht clubs. OBCC has been a host of the BoatUS Foundation’s free life jacket loaner program for nearly 30 years.

Cellphone communication with local law enforcement and rescue flares summoned police and fire rescuers as well as good Samaritans. The eight aboard from two families were all safely returned to shore, and the boat was recovered. The boat’s internal floatation had kept the boat floating upright.

Benson said, “I’m so thankful for the BoatUS Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Program. I knew I was going to have some young guests aboard that day, and I didn’t have any of the right-sized life jackets to fit them, so I made sure to swing by the loaner site at OBCC to get the sizes needed for each child. That afternoon was very stressful time for me as it all happened so quickly, but just knowing that everyone was wearing a properly fitted life jacket helped us get through the emergency and be able to talk about it.”

The BoatUS Foundation cautions boaters that children can easily slip out of an adult size or improperly fitted life jacket. A video on how to properly fit a kid’s life jacket can be found at BoatUS.org/Life-Jacket-Loaner/Fit-Video.

Living Lands & Waters and Partners Of Scott County Watersheds are offering students the opportunity to get out on the Mississippi River to learn about ecology, water quality and animal habitats.

According to Kelsi Massengale, coordinator, Partners Of Scott County Watersheds, the kids also get to learn about mussels, mussel identification, as well as the chance to explore the Mississippi River.

Many of the students live within a few miles of the river, most have not had the chance to even touch the river. Massengale says that the best part of the job is seeing that spark in the kids........

Mercury Racing Extends Powerboat P1 Partnership.........

Mercury Racing recently announced that they have entered into a two year agreement that expands their partnership with Powerboat P1, an international marine motorsport promoter.

The expanded and renewed partnership names Mercury Racing the official power of Class 1 and official partner of P1 Offshore. The deal also continues the on-site relationship with the Mercury Racing Race Support Team members and adds Mercury Racing to the Fan Village during the P1 Offshore Sarasota Grand Prix and the P1 Offshore St. Pete Grand Prix.

The Mercury Racing 11000 Competition engine will be used as the official power of the Union Internationale Motonautique Class 1 World Championship. The teams using the 1100 Competition engine will receive on-site technical support via the Mercury Racing Race Support Team........

Engineering crews from the bridge engineering firm Modjeski and Masters have been hanging out along the Clark Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois as they perform their regularly scheduled inspection.

The crews are nearing the completion of the routine inspections of the 28 year old Clark Bridge. The inspections are expected to be completed on Thursday, June 30th........

The Grafton Ferry is open for the season

Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm.

Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.

The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

Mississippi River Cruising

Supply Chain Delays Delay Viking Mississippi Maiden Voyage........

The maiden voyage of the five-deck, 193 room Viking Mississippi cruise ship has been delayed by supply chain issues, which will result in two fewer dockings in Burlington, Iowa this summer.

The Mississippi had been scheduled to dock twice in Burlington during July, once on July 18, and again on July 28. Now, it appears that the vessel will not arrive in Burlington until August 15.

Chris Gram, program director of the Greater Burlington Convention and Visitors Bureau says that the supply chain issues are affecting the vessel's amenities. He adds that the boat is done, and it is just the final details needed before sea trials can begin........

COVID Bubble Set To Pop........

The sentiment amongst boat dealers is shifting, as some two years after the start of the COVID-fueled increase in demand for boats, that demand is beginning to wane.

One dealer stated that selling boats is definitely harder and the position of strength is beginning to shift back to the consumer. The dealer added that it is still early, but the interactions and conversations are starting to change.

Another dealer said that they saw an overall decrease in sales during May, in both dollars and units. The dealer went on to say that sales traffic is down, as are website visits and leads........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Officials Investigating Shooting At Riverfront Park........

The Alton Police Department reports that two men are being treated for gunshot wounds following an early morning shooting. Reportedly, officers were called out to Riverfront Park near the Alton Marina at around 12:45 am for a report of shots fired.

According to Alton Police Chief Marcos Pulido, the investigation reveals that several people met at Riverfront Park and an argument ensued. Several shots were reportedly fired.

Pulido says that they believe the incident was an isolated event, as those involved were familiar with each other. He adds that violent crime is not common in the Riverfront Park area. The condition of the two gunshot victims is not known........

A Look Back At The Ill-Fated Santa Maria

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri........

On March 29, 1969, a replica of Christopher Columbus' vessel, the Santa Maria arrived on the St. Louis riverfront with the expectation of becoming a tourist attraction. On June 28, 1969, severe thunderstorms tore through St. Louis, breaking the Santa Maria and the old Becky Thatcher free from their moorings.

Both vessels drifted about two miles downstream where they crashed into a dock along the Illinois bank of the Mississippi River. The Santa Maria had a large gash in it's starboard side and sank.

After being raised and repaired, the Santa Maria returned to the St. Louis riverfront, however, it never became the popular tourist attraction former Mayor Alfonso J. Cervantes intended.

In March 1970, the Santa Maria was sold and moved to Titusville, Florida. On June 27, 1974, it was gutted by a fire........

Southwest Proposes Mississippi River Diversion To Cure Drought........

Last week, Las Vegas resident Bill Nichols made the suggestion of diverting water from the Mississippi River to the Southwestern United States as a way to help solve their drought-related water shortages.

Richard Layman of Salt Lake City counters that there is no way that the Mississippi river border states would allow water to be diverted to the Colorado River. He adds that instead of pursuing water diversions, the western states should look into desalination of ocean water to cure their issues.

Rod Rom of Butler, Missouri states that desalinators could be installed along the 1,360 miles of Pacific ocean mainland coastline. He notes that there are desalinators that use sun-distillation instead of electricity to produce fresh water, meaning external power is only needed for the pumps........

The Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater will be hosting a celebration of America's birthday along the Alton Riverfront with the Best Fireworks Show on the Mississippi River.

The amphitheater, which is a short walk from the Alton Marina, will feature DJ James Biko from 5 to 7:30 pm, the Air Force Band of Mid America from 8 to 9:30 pm. The Fireworks show is set to begin at 9:30........

Metro East Police: Body Recovered From The Mississippi River........

Monday morning, Metro East investigators were called out to the Mississippi River to recover a body. The Monroe County Sheriff's Department reports that shortly after 10 am, a body was pulled from the river.

There were no details related the victim's identity or what alerted responders to the area released. Stay tuned for more information........

Upper Mississippi River Basin
Report: Longer-Lasting Flood Events Altering Habitat.........

According to a new report, which analyzed close to 30 years of data, high water and longer lasting flooding events are changing the habitat along the Upper Mississippi River.

The Upper Mississippi River Basin is the natural floodplain which spans from Minnesota and Wisconsin past Iowa, Missouri and ending up at Cairo, Illinois. The region is ecologically diverse and is made up of wetlands, marshes and forests.

The report was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Upper Mississippi River Basin Association and reveals that increasingly wetter conditions occurring over the past few decades looks likely to continue.........

Copi Update

The Fish Formerly Known As Asian Carp Gets $600K Advertising Campaign...

The State of Illinois recently announced that they kicking off an awareness campaign to lure consumers into trying the invasive Asian carp from the Illinois River, now named "Copi."

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has launched a $600,000 campaign aimed at getting Illinois eaters excited about eating copi, the re-branded Asian carp from the Illinois River which is healthy and sustainable.

The IDNR is wanting more anglers catching copi and more consumers ordering the fish and cooking it at home. The carp's new name is a play on the word "copious". The 50 - 100 pound fish multiplies rapidly.........

The Grafton Riverside Flea Market has returned to The Loading Dock along Grafton's riverfront, and is once again offering attendees all the things they wanted, or didn't know they wanted.

The Riverside Flea Market is a popular event held on the fourth weekend of each month from April through October. The flea market features vendor booths that offer plenty of unique items, antiques and hand-made wares.

Mississippi River Near Madison, Wisconsin

A Man Is Missing After Boat Beached On A Sandbar Floated Off........

On Wednesday evening, a Dubuque, Iowa man went missing after the boat he was swimming next to in the Mississippi River in Grant County floated off of a sandbar and he went wading after it.

At around 5:30 pm, the Grant County Sheriff's Office received a report that 51 year old Alan Harting was swimming in shallow water when his pontoon boat, which was beached on a sandbar floated off and began to drift downstream.

The authorities report that the man was last seen pursuing the vessel in shallow water. The pontoon boat was found a short while later downriver from where it started, but the man was not there........

Well, after 8 years with the old girl ( that's more than most of my marriages lasted, LoL ) it was time to move on to another owner that will love her as much as I have. She's headed to Cincinnati, 720 miles, and will be the biggest boat in their harbor, on the Ohio river. I'm sure they will continue to bring her back to the glory she deserves

87 Year Old Adventurer Paddling The Mississippi River To Reclaim A Record........

On his 87th birthday, Dale Sanders also known as the "Greybeard Adventurer" dipped his oar into the Mississippi River to begin his effort to paddle the length of the Mississippi River. His goal is to break the world record as the oldest person to make the 2,340 mile journey again.

On June 14th, Sanders started his journey at the Headwaters of the Mississippi in Itasca State Park. He says that the Mississippi River is one of the most challenging expeditions he has been on, especially the lakes in the upper Mississippi River basin.

Sanders held the record for the oldest person to complete the Mississippi River Source to Sea challenge from 2015 to 2020, breaking the record at 80 years old in 80 days. Paddler Stan Stark broke that record last year by completing the trip at 81 years old........

Mississippi River Near Elsah, Illinois

Lane Closures Along The Great River Road........

The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that beginning on Monday, June 27, there will be lane closures along Illinois 100 at Elsah Creek to allow crews to perform bridge painting.

Eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane in the eastbound direction. The project is expected to be completed by mid-July, weather permitting. Once Complete, there will be another lane closure at Chautauqua Creek.

Illinois Route 100 will again be reduced to one lane in the eastbound direction. The closure will also allow crews to paint the bridge spanning Chautauqua Creek. This project is expected to be wrapped up by mid-August........

Boating Safety

Good Captains Must Maintain Situational Awareness........

As a captain of any vessel, we have to remember to focus on all that is going on around us. The helm is not the center of a two dimensional circle around the vessel, but rather a center of a "bubble" A captain also needs to be aware of what is going on above and below the water's surface.

A captain needs to be aware of traffic overtaking from the stern, crossing from port and starboard and traffic and dead ahead, no matter what direction they are going.

Under the water surface lurks plenty of hazards and learning to read the water is crucial. There may be shallow spots below the keel as well as danger from submerged logs and other debris that can damage the vessel or drive unit.

Don't forget to look up, as the weather forecast and being aware of changing weather conditions can be critical. It could mean the difference between a pleasant day on the water and a hazardous and miserable ride back to the dock........

An Update On The Alexander-Cairo Port Project Update........

On Friday, Illinois state officials met at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and presented an update on the Alexander-Cairo port project. Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza says that the port project will happen.

She says that the behind the scenes work is ongoing. Todd Ely, the lead consultant for the project, said that there will be 675 construction jobs and associated jobs that will bring in over $110 million dollars in economic for the region.

Illinois State Senator Dale Fowler says that the new port is going to be a lot of work but it sill be a critical project for the region. More engineering and consultant work is still needed........

Ohio River Near Smithland, Kentucky

Shoaling Causing Groundings ........

The U.S. Coast Guard is advising that their industry partners lower their draft along the Ohio RIver below Smithland, Kentucky following at least three groundings near Mile Marker 926, locally known as the Cumberland Bar.

According to Lieutenant John Nolan, spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit, Paducah, a vessel was pushing hopper barges loaded with rock when the lead barge ran aground. Luckily, there was no damage or injuries. The channel was blocked for approximately an hour before reopening.

Petty Officer Evan Dawson, water management representative for MSU Paducah says that the grounding was caused by shoaling along the river, which is an issue because it is normally low-water season, but there has also been a lack of rainfall........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Iconic Tom Sawyer Paddlewheeler Set To Make A Comeback........

One of the most nostalgic and recognizable boats on the Lake of the Ozarks, the iconic paddlewheeler excursion boat Tom Sawyer is poised to make a comeback.

The Tom Sawyer suddenly sank near the Bagnell Dam in May 2017. The owner at the time, Iguana Marine Group, relocated the boat to shore, and then put it up for auction two years ago.

808-Docks owner Azzbusta LLC of Gravois Mills had the winning bid for the vessel, and relocated it to their welding shop on the Westside. A completely new bottom was welded onto the vessel and it underwent some restoration work. The Tom Sawyer is currently moored just north of the Gravois Mills Bridge, where it awaits it's next phase in life........

A day after the Missouri River rose over flood stage at St. Charles, the County Emergency Management Agency warned 800 families from the Lincoln County line to West Alton to move to higher ground. Ten inches of rain fell in Southern Iowa, prompting officials to warn the rivers could top the record crest of 1973.

Work Began On The Clark Bridge Project........

On Thursday, crews with the bridge engineering firm Modjeski and Meyers were examining and photographing the wrapped cables along the Clark Bridge as part of the planned bridge inspection.

Modjeski and Meyers is conducting the inspection for the Illinois Department of Transportation. As part of the inspection, the northbound lanes will be closed from 8 am to 3 pm on Friday.

On June 27-28 the southbound right lane will be closed on the bridge 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The inspection will conclude June 29-30 with a closure of the northbound right lane 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.........

50 Years Of The Clean Water Act........

In the early 1970s, when Congress was still able to debate and pass sound legislation, the Clean Water Act was passed and signed into law with the mission to clean up the navigable waterways of the United States.

The Clean Water Act is celebrating it's 50th anniversary this year, and over that time, the recreational boating industry has been a beneficiary. One of the CWA's goals was to make the nation's water quality fishable and swimable by the 1980s.

While that time frame has long since passed, much progress has been made, but there is more work to do. An issue that needs to be tackled, but is not addressed by the CWA is controlling non-point pollution that contributes to algal blooms that trigger dead zones for marine life.........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Two Vessels Sank In The Lake........

Last weekend, two boats, a 24 foot Crownline and a 31 foot Eleganza powerboat sank in two separate incidents in the Lake of the Ozarks. No injuries were reported.

Tim McNitt with Atlantis Dive & Dock Salvage, who recovered both vessels, reports that the Eleganza was docked when it's lift went down and the vessel entered the water. He says it appears that the boat swamped because of the angle when the lift failed.

The Crownline reportedly encountered mechanical issues while on the lake and it was towed to Coffman Marina at the 51 Mile Marker. The vessel was moored overnight, and apparently sank during that time........

The Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee announced that one Bighead Asian carp was found in Lake Calumet along the Chicago Area Waterway System. It was the first physical specimen found above the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s Electric Barrier System.

Asian Carp Update

A Fish By Any Other Name Would Taste As Sweet........

Suppose you have a hankerin' for some fish, so you head to your favorite riverfront hangout, only to be disappointed after seeing that the catch of the day is invasive Asian carp. Would it sound more appetizing if the catch of the day were called Copi, fresh from the river?

On Wednesday, Illinois and partner organizations have begun a market testing campaign to rename four species collectively known as Asian carp as Copi, with the hope that the name change will make the fish more palatable to U.S. consumers.

According to Kevin Irons, the assistant fisheries chief with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the name "carp" is so harsh, people won't even try the fish. He adds that the fish is healthy, clean and is rather tasty........

Thank you to everyone who tuned in this morning to help IDNR celebrate Copi, the new brand for Asian carp.

Encouraging more human consumption of this delicious, healthful, flaky fish is just one part of IDNR’s comprehensive effort to manage these fish in our waterways.

Rebranding to Copi will help create interest and consumer demand, thereby reducing the ecological harm caused by high densities of invasive carps in our rivers. The more we remove through commercial fishing, the more successful we’ll be in helping our native fish thrive.

The Brandon Road Lock and Dam barrier near Joliet is another equally important part of our strategy. By eating more Copi and reducing fish densities in the Illinois River, we'll reduce upstream pressure on the barrier systems, further reducing the risk that these fish may pass through into Lake Michigan.

The two efforts work hand in hand. When you eat Copi, you’re part of a solution that helps all of Illinois.

EPropulsion Introduces Electric Inboard Motor........

EPropulsion has introduced their first electric inboard, the H-100 during this week's Electric and Hybrid Marine Expo in Amsterdam. The propulsion system can be rigged straight to a propeller, sterndrive, saildrive or azimuth thruster.

The 100 kW motor has a modular design and is designed for larger vessels with a full displacement of up to 200 tons. The drive system is suitable for a wide variety of vessels, including cruisers, sailing yachts and small passenger ferries.

Danny Tao, CEO of ePropulsion says that their latest addition to the company's lineup is another example that electric power can provide a cleaner, more sustainable boating experience without making compromises on performance........

Approval For Riverview Drive Project Heads For Final Vote........

On Tuesday, aldermen in the Committee of the Whole Meeting voted unanimously to a plan to proceed with the first phase of the Riverview Drive Construction project.

The retaining wall construction will be handled by GeoStabilizaton, International of Commerce Georgia. The cost for Phase I of this projects estimated at $3,498,440. Twenty Five percent of which will be paid for through Rebuild Illinois funds.

The matter was slated to be presented during Wednesday evening's Alton City Council meeting for final approval. Alton Mayor David Goins says that he is pleased that the Riverview Drive project is making progress........

Lane Closures Planned For The Clark Bridge........

The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that they are planning on shutting down lanes along the U.S. 67 Clark Bridge spanning the Mississippi River from June 23 through June 30.

Weather permitting, traffic will be reduced to one lane:

○ June 23: Southbound Left Lane Closed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
○ June 24: Northbound Left Lane Closed 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
○ June 27-28: Southbound Right Lane Closed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

○ June 29-30: Northbound Right Lane Closed 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The lane closures will allow crews to complete routine inspections........

Hi Bill!

Look who I met at Hoppies! Rob Boteler and Graham Wilson came down because they had heard so much about Hoppies on riverbills.com. "We had to come down and see Hoppies because we see photos from Claudia on Riverbills every other day!" That's the comment I heard as they pulled up to the marina!

Wilson introduced Boteler (pronounced BOAT-LER) to boating many years ago when they were next door neighbors in St. Charles. "He's gone over to the dark side now, from sail boating to motor boating," says Wilson, who currently lives in Lexington, Kentucky. Wilson came up for a cruise with Boteler, who keeps "Yesterday's Dream" at the Yacht Club, run by harbor master Andy Alexander.

Their four-day trip included stops at the Alton Marina, The Blue Owl in Kimmswick, the Grafton Oyster Bar, and Hardin, Illinois. Boteler says his boat is a Bayliner 2859. "It's 28 feet long and I have no idea what the 59 stands for," jokes Boteler. The two boaters were pretty excited about being featured on your web site!

Towboat operators should exercise caution, minimize their wake where possible and be experienced in high water operations. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in debris in the water and maneuver appropriately. Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have occurred and take appropriate action, to prevent any breakaways from occurring. Exercise caution in all passing and meeting situations and be mindful of all charted bridge navigational clearances. Buoys may have been dragged off station, so remain cautious while transiting.

June 22, 1884 in River History

The Riverboat Montana sank in Missouri River across from St. Charles where parts of her haul she can still be seen today in periods of very low water upstream from the 370 bridge.

The Montana was built in 1879 and was the largest paddle wheeler on the Missouri River...280 feet long. The boat had three decks and stood more than 50 feet tall.

The Montana struck the Old Wabash Railrod Bridge at St. Charles while trying to pass under it and took on water before running aground on the St. Louis County side of the river. No one was hurt, but the Montana split in half.

Missouri River In North St. Louis County

Rescue Effort Launched After On-The-Run Suspect Ended Up In The River........

On Tuesday, responders began a brief rescue effort along the Missouri River in Northern St. Louis County after a man trying to get away from the Police ended up in the water.

Rescue crews took boats out to Sioux Passage Park in North St. Louis County in an effort to rescue the man from the river. The man reportedly got out of the river on his own and ran away.

Police did not identify the suspect by name or age, however, an officer had attempted to stop the man while responding to a destruction of property call. Police are still working to take the man into custody........

Ohio River Journeys

Man Paddling The Ohio River For Parkinson's Awareness........

Over the next several weeks, Taylor Dewey will be kayaking the entire length of the Ohio River in order to raise funds and awareness for Parkinson's Disease. He began his six-week-long journey 20 days ago in Pittsburgh.

Each year, Dewey plans an adventure to undertake while on leave from the Navy. He has paddled other rivers and even cycled the perimeter of the United States.

This year's adventure has a personal meaning. Dewey typically raises funds for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease research as part of Team Fox. He notes that he had lost his grandmother to Parkinson's about a dozen years ago........

On Tuesday, Brunswick Corp announced that they were launching a new global initiative called All Blue Planet, which they say will focus on "inspiring communities to pursue the restorative power of water through educational programming, events and collaborations".

Brenna Preisser the executive vice president and president of business acceleration and chief strategy officer says that studies reveal that time spent in or around water is an effective way to lower stress and improve overall well-being.

Preisser adds that All Blue Planet is focused on increasing access to the water and providing more opportunities for communities to experience water in all of it's forms........

The Steamboat, Western Engineer, was shaped and painted to look like a serpent in an effort to intimidate the Native-Americans. The boat that most folks called “Long’s Dragon” left St. Louis on this date headed upstream to Franklin and beyond.

Yellowstone River Flooding Update

The Yellowstone River Flooding Not Expected To Affect Missouri River.........

Thanks to the flooding along the Yellowstone River, up to 2 million acre/feet of water is entering the Missouri River system, as the Yellowstone is but one of many tributaries that feeds into the Missouri River.

According to John Remus, Chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Missouri River Basin Water Management, this amount of water could fill up to 986,400 Olympic-sized swimming pools, but as far as the Missouri River system is concerned, this is just a "drop in the bucket".

THe Upper Missouri RIver Reservoir system is capable of storing upwards of 72 million acre/feet of water, and when the reservoir system is operating as it should, it can easily accommodate the excess water from the Yellowstone River........

Transport 360 Operating The Port Of Kansas City........

Since the start of 2022, Transport 360, who operates the Port of St. Joseph along the Upper Missouri River, has been quietly operating the Port of Kansas City in Kansas City, Missouri.

According to Bill Becker, the CEO of Transport 360, talks with the Port of Kansas City began in late fall and the deal was finalized on December 12th. Neither party announced the agreement at the time.

Becker says that the two port facilities complement each other, and the Port of St. Joseph has been steadily growing. He adds that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been doing a good job at maintaining the channel........
